We had a fabulous farm to table dinner at this organic farm, located not too far away from the Lake Michigan towns of Michigan City and New Buffalo.
After a welcoming glass of sparkling wine, we went out to the farm fields to learn about the history of Granor, their mission, their operations, and to learn something about farming. It provided an interesting prelude to the main event, dinner.
Our group of seven was seated at a long table with three other friendly diners inside a large greenhouse that includes the farm kitchen and other meeting spaces. Dinner featured seasonal crops from the farm and proved to be a celebration of the vegetables and grains from the area, along with bottomless pours of excellent wines from area wineries. There was only one course that included a protein, a duck confit served with a raspberry sauce, and it was superb; rich, moist, tender, flavorful. The other courses featured an assortment of vegetables, from a flavorful kale salad with goat cheese and sourdough-zuchini croutons to an incredible carrot entree that was unlike anything I've ever had before. I eat vegetables but generally prefer my proteins--gotta say this is the kind of thing that could turn me into a vegetarian.
We heard they are going to be doing some fried chicken dinners in late fall/early winter. That's enough reason alone to get me back to Granor.
Granor also has a roadside farm store that sells fresh produce and other products. We found out they are furthermore starting a distilling operation to make liquors from some of their produce. So there's lots of good reasons to take a drive out into the country to visit Granor but if you get the chance, that Taste of Granor dinner we experienced is fantastic.
