Tucked away in a strip mall in Meridian, Idaho, Grant's Restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. The first time I pulled up, I was less than impressed by the exterior or the hokey outdoor seating area. But stepping inside was another story. The cozy interior--complete with a roll-up glass garage door leading to the patio--puts off a casual, yet somehow upscale, vibe. The small space, with less than ten tables indoors, was very intimate. Patio seating, fitted with heaters, blankets, and pillows, was excellent, even though we had to contend with pesky flies. Otherwise, the atmosphere felt very inviting, having this great little community-bar type of feel.
The service for me at Grant's has been up and down. On one visit, we had an absolute gem of a server whose attentiveness and friendly demeanor made the meal much more enjoyable. The other time, things got off to a slow start. We were missed before another server finally stepped in and salvaged the night with top-notch service. Not all servers hit the mark; some seemed indifferent or just not very attentive. Even with these inconsistencies, the staff does come off as genuine and friendly, making up for the occasional lapse in service.
The food is generally fantastic at Grant's. I have had some standout dishes, like the chicken sandwich and the mushroom burger. The fries were tasty and crisp. A creative and flavorful tempura green bean app and a veggie burger on pretzel rolls were just some well-thought-out dishes that expressed a commitment to fresh, farm-to-table ingredients. Of course, not everything worked out perfectly: some dishes were way too salty, as with the quail, and a few of the sweets, like flourless chocolate cake, were overbaked. There's a great selection of drinks here, from custom cocktails to loads of beers; some cocktails fell a bit flat, though.
Grant's Restaurant will give you a unique dining experience, from the ambiance to the friendly staff and the well-balanced menu of creative dishes and comfort food masterpieces. There are still areas for improvement, particularly in service consistency and seasoning. Still, I was greeted with an overall positive dining experience. Grant's fits the bill if you're looking for a local restaurant with a nice ambiance and good food.
