Wow. Great Notion Brewing has been a fixture of Portland for years, and only recently did we start getting a few can releases locally. It has been on my list since I first tried their beer and I finally got to visit one of their locations. Alberta was the most convenient for us and overall it ended up being a highlight of our entire trip.
We arrived on a rainy afternoon, wet, tired, and thirsty. From the outside it looks small, with a simple door and windows off the main street. Inside is so much more - wood tables and decor, soft lighting, green plants, natural light, and their signature artwork displayed everywhere. This is a family friendly spot with food and non-alcoholic drinks offered. We sat right in the middle, giving us a view of the bar, restaurant area, and kitchen. Outside the back is a large outdoor seating area with fire pits and open air - I'd imagine it's a great place to spent summer evenings.
The staff was immediately welcoming greeting us and explaining to order everything online. For a group that likes to split, this made payment easier. Their beer choices in person were so much more than I had hoped for with styles ranging from lagers, to smoked beer, hazy IPAs, pastry stouts, and everything in between. For two friends, this was their favorite brewery on the entire trip thanks to a large selection of well-made sours. I opted mostly for IPAs and rare styles and loved everything. Their glassware is beautiful with round flight glasses in wooden boxes, stemmed tulip glasses for full pours, and sheer lager glasses for lighter styles. All the beers were well made - there wasn't a bad one. Prices may seem higher to some, but you're paying for quality over quantity. Some pastry and barrel-aged stouts have an upcharge as well, but the menu is clear.
Their label art is an iconic style; the restroom walls are covered with past releases, the main walls have some originals and upscaled art as well. Be sure to have a look around. Food here is a separate business, we had tacos (see my other specific review for details). They have a merchandise counter with t-shirts, hats, glassware, etc.; also cold cans ready for take out.
Overall we didn't want to leave, but couldn't drink anymore. If you're a beer fan, this is a must-visit place if you're in the area. Cheers!
