Great Notion Brewing Review - Ballard - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Great Notion is originally from Portland with outposts in Georgetown and Ballard. Their brews are typically inspired by other foods and drinks, like their aguas frescas sour with hibiscus, strawberry, and watermelon, or their creamsicle IPA with orange puree, vanilla, and milk sugar. The indoor/outdoor space makes it a fun hangout spot in the summer, and there’s a onsite if you’re hungry." - Aimee Rizzo

Greatest beer in Washington if not anywhere else. Staff is the best and super cool. I travel over an hour to come here. They have a beer to fit anyone’s taste buds. Spot on flavors. Dog friendly.

Google
Now, June 2025: I am changing my rating from my first review. I’m sorry for the bad review. Parking in this area is extremely bad. It’s not the fault of Great Notion. Pay to park. It’s worth it. Great Notion is one of the best brewers of Smoothie sour beers in the United States. That’s not an understatement. They also brew some kick ass more mainstream beers. Dog friendly, too. 11 months ago: We tried parking in front of the beer garden, but someone from the brewery walked out to let us know we needed to park somewhere else. Street parking is sparse, as well, because of the numerous RVs of unhoused people. I'm sorry to be harsh, but the owners should reconsider this location.

Google
TV usually on with some local sports on, good amount of seating. Great rotating beer offerings & friendly staff. Parking is tricky anywhere in Old Town Georgetown but they have a few spots. Don't try to park in the Paint shop parking lot without paying they'll ticket your vehicle quick.

Cool, quiet spot on a weeknight. Wide range of sours and IPAs, including interesting, nuanced flavors for discerning craft beer lovers. Plenty of cans to take home, too. I went with Ripe and So Wrong It's Ripe (related, high-quality hazy IPAs). Shares a parking lot with another brewery - Great Notion's entrance is a bit hidden, may look closed if the neighbor is closed.

Google
Have driven by here multiple times without realizing Great Notion had a tap room here. It’s in the old Lowercase brewing location. Fantastic beer and a lot of room and seating both inside and outside. Will be my new go to beer spot in the area.

Google
My friend recommended Great Notion because they are known for their sours and they did not disappoint. They are phenomenal! Its a laid back vibe with a cozy outdoor space tucked behind Lowercase brewing. Flights are pricey but well worth trying so you can sample all the different sours. The milkshake and smoothie beers are so unique and tasty. They offer crowlers and canned beers to go. Yum 🍻

While looking for a brewery in the Seattle area, I stumbled upon Great Notion! Mostly sours, but a few IPAs and Seltzers. Tony was great and recommended some good options!

Google
Love their beer but marketing sucks. Haven't been here in a couple years but randomly started getting lots of marketing emails recently. You guys are better than that, not going back because of this.

Yelp
Came to this pretty small brewery. Great Notion has a few locations in the Pacific Northwest, including this one in Georgetown. It may not have a ton of space inside, but it also has a patio. Has a lot of beers to choose from. The prices are kind of high with it being a smaller local brewery that focuses more on quality than on quantity. A pretty impressive list of beers. It's got a lot of unusual styles and flavors. There's fruity and plenty of others that sound unique. Beers are good. It's about $8 a pint. That's kind of a lot, but this is a smaller brewery though. It's a few bucks off certain pints at happy hour. Last time we got a few, and they had some pretty crazy sounding ones. Best of these was the Blueberry Muffin. This is a sour with blueberries obviously. Beers are pretty easy to find around here, but this is one of the best. It's located on Airport Way at Albro Place. This is located next to Deep Sea, the bakery with cupcakes and other treats.

Yelp
I've been wanting to visit a Great Notion for a long time, and this one happened to be near my dinner reservations. They have such a unique offering of beers, like smoothie and fruited flavors. The customer service was friendly, and they helped me fill out the must-haves of my beer flight. The area is small, but cute, and feels comfortable. I don't often make it to this part of Seattle, but it's a wonderful spot I hope I can visit again.

Yelp
Cutest outside seating, always such a great time. Wall in service- even if they have a big line it moves quick! No food present, but they allow outside snacks.

Yelp
Enjoyed a delicious beer with friends, on a nice day, after a great M's game! Love this place! *Only issue was a group of 6 or 7 people, also post game, who over stayed their welcome, didn't follow WA laws regarding opening beer-to-go (they were told) and didn't like being reminded and acted like jerks from thar point on. The "men" badgering the female beer-tender was way outta line. Not cool boys.

Yelp
I love this brewery and always stop by when I am in the area. I much prefer it to a previous brewery that was in a different part of this same building. I like fun beer and I always find something that sounds delicious here. Other than your typical Georgetown parking issues, this is the best. There are a few spots out front, but your chances of getting one of these are very small. If you don't know Georgetown is great for walking around and brewery/bar hopping. Lots of places to eat around here too. In the summer I enjoy the outdoor patio area, but if the weather is not great the inside is nice and cozy too. I really liked when they had the separate back room, but I guess that is no longer. I love their art. There is always something new to try here, sometimes it's best to get a sampler, but they are pretty great about letting you taste things to help you decide as well. I appreciate their detailed menus and they are always open to answering questions. Prices are high, but the beer is delicious. My recent favs are the Possessed (who doesn't love a green beer) and Strawberry Fluff (loved by me and alpacas). My partner does not share my love of fun beer, so for those like him they have some typical non fun beers as well.

Yelp
Great beer and amazing people. Such friendly vibes in the taproom with well behaved doggies!

Yelp
Purely based on the drink, was very happy with the Over Ripped / sour smoothie style beer. Has mango and mangosteen. Stopped by for the Passionfruit Mochi but maybe it was not for me.

Yelp
I'm so glad I found out about Great Notion, thanks to a Yelp Elite event! I discovered that I'm a huge fan of sours and fruited beers. I even got to try a milkshake IPA for the first time. Usually I'm not a huge fan of beer but I think I'll be back to try more! There is over 10+ pours to choose from on the tap list. You can purchase sampler sizes before you commit to a full size. This is a neat brewery tucked in Georgetown. It is spacious. It's accommodating for larger groups. There are board games and a few pinball machines. Lots of good vibes.

Yelp
I typically go to the Great Notion in Ballard, and once I tried their "Edge of Dessert" smoothie style beer I've been stalking their Un-Tapped list ever since awaiting its' return to the rotation. I "like" beer and I LOVE Great Notion beer! It's like they have the sweet-toothed woman in mind when creating these super creative beers. I drove to Georgetown today after a month long wait for this beer, and it's SO worth it. I would also recommend any of their beers made with milk sugars. Sounds so weird, but seriously so YUM!

Richard S.

Yelp
Very cozy spot. It's a tad difficult to find, but well worth the journey. (Be aware - parking can be difficult to find.) The stouts are excellent -- The "Double Stack" has been my favourite.

Brian S.

Yelp
green haired bartender was rude, irritable and disrespectful to our entire group. good luck with her pouring your brews. I'll be going to other breweries from here on out

Yelp
Wonderful beers and a super chill atmosphere. Perfect place to kill Some time before a long flight home.

Yelp
Came to great notion on a warm Sunday. They had a nice and cool indoor space that let you enjoy the sunshine without baking in it. I'm pretty simple when it comes to beer which is not great notions jam but I still enjoyed the beer.

Yelp
Came here an hour before closing. Bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable with the beers. A ton of seating available, there were only a few customers here. Lots of board games and card games available to play. There were a few arcades / pinball machines too. Parking was a little weird, we didn't know we were in the paid parking lot and had to move the car to a different spot so we didn't have to pay. Had great beers and a fun time here.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
Ok I love this place ! I am a huge fan of sours and berry flavored beers, this hits the mark. Whenever someone comes into town I make it my business to bring them here. It's a really chill place you can kick back, bring snacks, play games and most importantly drink some great a$$ beer!

Yelp
If I'm somewhere along the PNW, Great Notion has to be a stop. Luckily, I was in town for my dad's birthday and finally got the opportunity to visit the Georgetown location in WA around May (COVID times). I wasn't too sure what to expect or if they'd be open for some limited dine-in. It's in a little nook of town that is notorious for parties day and night. But when it's calm, you almost can't tell that it is there. But you might wonder why there are so many cars in this tiny parking lot but nobody is around. Right off the freeway, it's a pretty unsuspecting location and shares spaces with a machine shop, another brewery, and Great Notion. There was a tiny sign that pointed you to the space. If you were standing facing the building, it's the entrance to your right! They have a fantastic outdoor space that is also a dog friendly patio and not bad for groups, either. It's definitely one of their smaller locations, but it is not lacking in beer selection or vibes. Went inside to be seated and QR code for menu of beers and somebody came over to take your order. Always a good selection from GN and continuously rotating taps with the limited releases! I suggest downloading their app so you know when the next drop you and you can come try it in person. A lot of times, you have to preorder if you want to pick up the drop and they won't have anymore available but you are able to taste in person. Your get most of the GN experience here - merch, flights, beers and to go. Staff are super friendly and always with the recommendations! This location is one of the best locations because they usually get all the drops that GN releases. So if you're in the Seattle area, make sure to stop by for a great beer!

Yelp
Back in Georgetown, after a long Saturday at work, Great Notions has been on my radar since first trying a few of their brews while residing in the Bay Area Cali, so many great breweries in the Georgetown area, it's taken some time to visit most of them... one or two still in the list, but a few already visited multiple times. Great Notions has some unique takes on beers, not just your average multiple choices of IPA's, but many uniquely flavored beers, which many are still waiting to try, as this visit was focused on trying some of their newly tapped fresh hopped ales, which one of which I got the kick the keg, last pour... Thanks! Shawn! Both of the fresh hops ales were great tasting, hoppy and juicy hazy, just what you would expect from a great brewery, so glad they opened a tap house or two in Seattle (another still to visit in Ballard) being a Saturday afternoon, both inside and outside was busy, parking was a little challenging but not too bad, the patio was full, but I was lucky enough to find a stool at the bar. The constant line was quickly taken care of, bar tenders were on it! Making for smiling happy customers walking away with full pours or multiple tasters to try. Dog friendly patio, college games on the multiple screens throughout, and a nice variety of rock playing made for a very chilled atmosphere. Now I couldn't leave without at least trying a taster of one of their unique beers, Blueberry muffin...OMG!! So good!! Blueberry blast up front with a nice muffin grain aftertaste... if I was ever tempted to have a beer for breakfast.. this one would be it.. lol definitely looking forward to more visits to try more of Great Notions special take on beers. Georgetown is always a fun area to visit. Happy Yelping and Cheers!!

Yelp
Thanks for hosting us at the Yelp Elite event! I loved the option of flights to explore the menu, especially when you are the kind of person who can't make up their mind and likes to sample different things! Cool that the space is indoor/outdoor with tons of seating and that there are games available to play. I'll have to come back to try what I missed out on this time!

Yelp
Had a fun evening at Great Notion; I tried a few different beers! My favorite of the evening was the Baked Peach, I'm usually not a sour person but I was pleasantly surprised by this beer! Reminds me vaguely of the aftertaste of a peach pie. I was not a fan of the seltzer as it tasted heavily like fruit punch or medicine, so would not recommend. Great service, smiles all around and some good beer! Also they have TVs and pinball machines as well. I'm not in the area often, but I can definitely see myself returning!!

Yelp
Another great Georgetown venue that I will put into rotation when I want to go out for beers with friends. Great Notion delivered with an array of local and tasty beers. I am very partial to sours. If that's your jam, this is your place! The blueberry was unique and lived up to some of the Flemish sour cherry beers I've had overseas.

Yelp
Had some time between meetings, and decided that a brewery stop for a flight wouldn't be a bad idea. I mean, it was Thirsty Thursday, after all! It was my first time here and what a cool spot! They have a pretty good-sized outdoor space, with really cool murals and a cool plant wall, as well as ample space. All of the Seattle vibes. The story is the same for the inside - cool murals, and everything else is like any other brewery visit you've probably had. This Great Notion location has a really cool event space though, which I have my eye on! I went with a flight of mainly all IPAs, but Great Notion is known for their sours (not my thing). I've tried some of their "milkshake" style beers in the past which were really good, but took a minute to get used to. That said, their "Let's Talk Tropics" IPA is dangerous. It's so dang good. Refreshing. High ABV. Definitely one that would be a great summer beer (and will be, for me). So glad I stopped to check out this space. See ya soon!

Yelp
Walked into Great Notion to kill Monday blues and ordered their flight with the following drafts: -Night of the living squatch ( The Best - Coffee/chocolate notes) -Blueberry muffin (Fruity) -Double raspberry marshmallow (Fruity) -Edge of the dessert (okayish) -Radio silence (not my cup of tea or beer rather) They have a lot of tables to seat folks and the ambience is okay not great as compared to some other breweries but a nice cozy place for a small group tp hang out. You can see planes fly by real up and close and those loud noises can be annoying sometimes if you are trying to have a conversation with your group of friends. Service is nice staff is friendly and polite. I will stop by again for the Night of the Living Squatch and the Mango beer (they did not have it the day I stopped by)

Yelp
I have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Great Notion ever since I heard the great news of the Portland brewery making it's way up to the Seattle area! GN is by far, one of my favorite breweries in Portland! Their beers are unique, and they have an amazing line up (and some of the best IMO) of New England style IPAs! We went down on Friday, since my husband and I were both off work for the holiday. To our disappointment, their patio is available BY RESERVATION only! (If you don't have a reservation you can buy 4 packs to go. No growlers/crowlers at this time.) Somehow by the grace of the beer gods, someone was 30 minutes late for their reservation so they sat us at their table! Talk about luck! (After we left I looked online regarding the reservation policy bc I didn't see it when I was on the GN site- they're booked solid for weeks! You have to go to online and all the BOTTOM of the page is the link to "reserve a table". The reservations are for 2 hour time slots & they fill quickly, so reserve reserve reserve!!!) Anyways back to the beer! My husband and I ordered the sample tray; which includes 5 beers. We got 3 NEIPAs, a session and a stout. The BABY BLUE was my favorite! The color was strange, but the aroma and the taste were so good!!! Although, it is a blueberry NEIPA, it reminded me of cotton candy! Not overly sweet, just a hint of blueberry (which has never ever been my go to flavor!) The peanut Brother was a nice stout. I got more chocolate than peanut butter but it was as nice clean stout for such a high ABV. We got a couple of 4-packs to take home. I wish they were doing crowlers, because I would've been stocking up on the Baby Blue! It was also Black Friday on our visit, so we got 20% off a Great Notion hat. Thanks Great Notion! Welcome to Seattle! I am so glad you're here!!! Cheers!

Yelp
If you want to try some crazy beer... they always have fun and interesting brews on tap! But why I love GN is their juicy IPAs.

Yelp
I was a fan of Great Notion after visiting them in Portland a few years ago and am a fan of sours so naturally, was super excited to see them open up their Georgetown location! A few things to note, to avoid disappointment/set reasonable expectations: - Right now (as of September 2020) they are accepting online reservations for seating (and no walk-ins). I had reserved a few weeks back (right when they released seats) and got a reservation for Sunday 9/27. The weather (and air quality) cooperated so we were able to make it! Not sure if they will keep this area open if it rains (there were umbrellas but it wasn't fully covered). If you want to buy beer to go, I believe you can walk in (or order through their app). We saw lots of people showing up hoping to find seating but they were turned away due to not having a reservation. - Reservations are pretty limited due to A) demand and B) the seating area only accommodates a handful of groups and is properly distanced, etc. Having put those caveats out there, this was overall a positive experience! When you arrive, they will seat you in the outdoor area (which was super comfortable -- soft patio chairs and a very distanced/private area). They let you know that all the ordering/paying is done through the QR code on the table, so be sure to have your phone charged/available. You literally do not interact with the staff at all after you get seated, except when they bring you your beers (and they tell you specifically "do not get up from your table in less you have to use the restroom", which was a bit harsh, but understandable) I ordered a flight (5 beers for $16, I believe). I had the Double Berry Shake, Guava Jr., Seedless, Tree Hugger, and King size peanut butter. All were unique and tasty in their own way -- the peanut butter one was a tad sweet for me (and a little artificial tasting) but all the others were great, with the Double Berry Shake being my favorite. The only slightly negative here is that the experience feels a bit impersonal since you don't interact with the staff. You literally cannot ask a question about a particular beer (e.g. is this beer super hoppy?) or any other question, as they do not come to your table. I definitely understand and respect covid precautions, but it seems like they could come close(ish) to your table (while keeping 6 feet distance) initially to check on you, ask if you have questions, etc. especially since this a new brewery to the Seattle area and people may have questions before ordering a particular beer. Otherwise, always happy to have another brewery in Seattle to frequent, and you can never have too many sours! :)
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Wha? Great Notions has TWO taprooms in Seattle!? I was really confused when I was in Ballard and entered in the GPS coordinates and it wanted to take me to the Georgetown. I knew there was a Ballard taproom and was pleasantly surprised to see that there were two locations in Seattle. After I wrapped up my brewery business in Ballard on my way home I stopped at the Georgetown location and bought their Ledge Bier pilsner. It was a nice, light biscuity beer which was enjoyable and a nice departure I needed from the sweeter beers I have had in the past with this brewery however if you can snag their delightful and very popular Blueberry Muffin beer you should definitely give that a try. It will make your taste buds swoon!

Yelp
I tried the sour flights today and was impressed. From right to left they are: Seedless, Luminous 11, Freshly Sliced (arguably my favorite), double blueberry shake, and blue raspberry fluff. I haven't had a flight in a while, and really enjoyed the different flavors this one had. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Jacob K.

Yelp
We loved visiting Notion in Georgetown. We stopped here to kill time on the way to the airport. They didn't have food on site but they have walking distance recommendations. Really cute place and a great variety of beers. Don't see too many sours in the city...this place is really nice.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
HR 3-6 pm M-F $4 lagers, $5-6 IPAs, $1 off sours Portland spot known for sours & IPAs up here Nice enuf but kinda hipster. They share a restroom with another brewery and have a couple of video games #beerisgood public

Taylor W.

Yelp
This is the best brewery hands down. They have a super cool vibe. Their bicycle day is my favorite sour of all time and they have really good IPAs too.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I liked this spot in Seattle. I've been to the one in Portland before. They have a good variety of beers ranging from sours to pilsners. I liked their fruit beers a lot! They have cans and draft pours, I prefer draft so definitely need to read the board to make sure to order correctly! I liked the brewery a lot!
google avatar

Glenda C.

Yelp
Looks like a really cool spot. First brewery I've been to that is NOT kid friendly. They were nice enough to suggest a local brewery that's kid friendly.
google avatar

Ryan F.

Yelp
Visited this location and had a great time. Beertender was super friendly and knowledgeable talking beer with. Liked the quirkiness of the space: cool artwork all over, multiple connected rooms, outside patio, pinball machines. Grabbed some Smarty Pants sandwiches to bring onsite a short couple minute walk away. Will definitely be back

Yelp
I'm updating my review after my most recent experience here, since I was finally able to get my appointment rescheduled. I'm not willing to give them five stars yet since it was unfortunate they didn't handle that situation better, but I will likely update it to five stars if my last experience remains constant the next few times I visit. I was expecting the customer experience to be lacking based on my experience as well as the initial reviews below. However, I was pleasantly surprised over how great the service was. I had two gentlemen waiting on me the other night; they were both attentive and knew their beers well which meant they had good feedback on which beers to get based on the styles I like. The beers are all very unique, which is what sets Great Notion apart from most other breweries in the area. They specialize in sours and IPA's, but also had some interesting darker beers on tap. They also add random ingredients to their beers such as fruit, mochi, and other weird items. This isn't as surprising for sours, but it is for IPA's. I tried a sampler of different types and all were really good. However, I didn't take any home since their prices are quite a bit higher than most other breweries (i.e. $20 is about the average for a 4-pack of their beers). I believe part of this price increase is due to the ingredients they add, but even then they're most expensive than most other local breweries. The atmosphere is a slight upgrade from Mercer Winery, which used to occupy the spot (which I'm still bummed about them leaving, btw). They've added more coverings to the patio area to keep out the rain as well as some fake grass over the concrete, which looks nicer than it sounds. The one thing that would be a nice addition would be heat lamps or a heat source once it gets colder, since it was already pretty cold when I went in early Nov. They don't offer food options but are cool with you bringing it in - I recommend either Fonda La Catrina or Calozzi's Cheesesteak.

Yelp
I fell in love with this brewery in Oregon so I was super excited about this Georgetown location. The beer is SIX STARS... I just wish the service was better! I hope next time I go, they will have a more considerate staff. The staff I am referring to worked, Monday night 9/28! Im excited to see how you've grown, now that you know better.... Do better!
google avatar

Ricky R.

Yelp
I have always loved the idea of great notion but since it was in Portland i only visited a couple of times. Now there is one literally up the road from me. Its a little smaller and during covid feels really small with the limited seating, but its next door to another great brewery Lowercase. So if one is too busy to visit the other might be worth a stop. Additionally I would recommend this place for the beer alone. Grab a couple to sip or grab some four packs. Either way you wont be disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Great place to come and chill. The beers are delicious. They have a great selections of hazy ipa's. Clean environment and quick and friendly service.

Yelp
Love LOVE love this place and the sour beers. YUM! Wish I didn't have to pay for parking, but at least there is parking. Oh, and this ish is worth it.

Guy M.

Yelp
Tiny tap room with 2 TV's. Beer is ok not cheap. Tucked away tiny parking lot with a shared business in that parking lot. Very little parking and only 2 or 3 tables inside. Not sure how get included on yelp as a sports bar.

Aiyana D.

Yelp
Love! Used to drive to Oregon every so often to get my hands on some of these beers! They have a nice patio as well as a big indoor seating area. Beers usually sell out quick so if you hear of a flavor make sure to pre order in the app or get there early! Also tried their least spicy hot sauce, very good but still hot asf!! Service was friendly as always, will be back soon!

Yelp
If you are looking for amazing local craft beers, this is the place for you. Ever changing rotation ensures there is always something new to try. Super knowledgeable staff! One of my absolute favorite breweries!!!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
This Brewery is a hidden gem! Tucked behind Lower Case Brewery. Best to find parking on the street. If you park in the Brewery you have to pay. I prefer the beer at Great Notion. They have a wide variety for your taste buds. From Sour to Fruity notes, you won't be disappointed. They do have food trucks that come by as well. Friendly staff and they do check Vax cards.

Yelp
fun place to try funky beers! as a non beer drinker, I usually order ciders at breweries. my brother convinced me to split a flight, and I actually found some fruity beers I liked! Big papaya was tasty, very fruity and not an overwhelming beer flavor. In our bagg was also fruity and tasty, but more hoppy. we also tried carrot cake, which legit tasted like carrot cake, double blueberry cheesecake was definitely blueberry and sweet, and friends to the end tasted 100% like peanut beer. didn't like those as much but they definitely got the flavors across! very cool place to hang out and sample beers!
google avatar

Justine R.

Yelp
To put it simple, the best beer in Seattle! So much variety, flavors. Love it here :)
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
Only came here for a couple drinks with friends but really loved the backyard patio! Excellent service from the servers taking our orders and good recos as well that catered to our preferences. Drinks came quickly. Tried a few new sours that I really liked!

Yelp
This place has a lot of potential and it think it would be very busy this summer. We visited twice now, once during the Covid shut down and again during the weekend. They have great outdoor seating, but It was really cold and they don't have heaters. So, on a cold day dress warm and bring a blanket. Loved their fruit monster beer and their mango ripe are really good.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
This place certainly has a cult following! Folks rolling up to place to go orders and all of that. The outside setup was really hipster/ vibey which was neat, but the rest of the experience was lackluster. Pros? Huge tap-list Fun logo and merch Cool outdoor seating area Connected to Lowercase (two breweries is better than one, I say!) They have an interesting app with information on beer releases and awards you can unlock if you purchase/ participate Cons? You likely can't get anything to go unless you're "in the know" and already ordered it ahead of time... Service was awkward. I'll just leave it at that Some of the stouts just tasted SUPER syrupy, not like they used real ingredients but maybe flavoring instead... not a fan of that flavor profile

So glad I stumbled across this place after having lunch in Georgetown! Excellent beers, great service and a cool patio. The New England IPAs were fantastic, and this is coming from someone who prefers West coast IPAs after burning out on hazys. Their sours are also exceptional. Will definitely be back!
