"Dustin from Stranger Things. Your sixth-grade best friend who had headgear and read during recess. Michael Cera. Spongebob. They’re all lovable weirdos. And Gristmill is one of them. Smack dab in the middle of Park Slope, Brooklyn, Gristmill is a total misfit amongst its suburbia-like surroundings. It's certainly cooler than, say, the child-stuffed Calexico across the street, but it's also definitely not a cool restaurant (the lighting is a little too bright and the booths have yellow upholstery). You just can’t really put a label on this place. And that’s exactly why we like it. There are two defining aspects about Gristmill: they’re serious about their wood-burning oven, and even more serious about their local, seasonal ingredients. At any other restaurant, a five-minute rundown on the farms where every dish was sourced might be humiliatingly tedious, but our waiter at Gristmill managed to do so in a completely not-pretentious, slightly eccentric, totally endearing way. Lovable weirdo. photo credit: Noah Devereaux When it comes to the menu, Gristmill really lets its freak flag fly. It changes constantly, and you’ll see everything from kimchi & pork meatball toast to chicken liver mousse to beets served with edible flowers. We ate cornbread out of a corn husk. The sundae is topped with almost-too-peppery black pepper whipped cream. Oh, and there’s an entire section of pizzas with a wheaty, sourdough crust that’s strangely odd and addictive. Once you get used to the fact that your meal is not going to be consistent in any way, shape, or form, you settle into the weirdness. Because you realize it’s okay that nothing goes together. And because all of the food is really, really good. So when do you use Gristmill? It’s not sexy enough for a big date. It’s not safe enough for a first date. It’s probably too out of the way for your friend group dinner. The use cases are admittedly limited. But when you get tired of all your normal spots, Gristmill is good for getting a little weird. Food Rundown Garlic Knots When will you not be fcking thrilled about your meal starting with hot, oily, just-out-of-the-oven garlic knots? Never. The answer is never. You're going to need both kinds (everything and cacio e pepe) for every person sitting at your table. At least. Kimchi & Pork Meatball Toast Here are some questions you might consider as you eat this: How does this look so pretty and so ugly at the same time? Why am I eating a meatball with kimchi? Why is the whole thing on toast? Stop asking questions and just eat it. It tastes good. Cornbread Just like how you felt when you saw Geeky Kevin getting low at your 7th-grade dance, Gristmill's cornbread will blow your mind. They change up the preparation seasonally (we've had it with jalapeños served inside a corn husk, and we've had it topped with apples and coleslaw), but it needs to be on your table no matter what. This is Gristmill's mic drop. Beets & Their Greens You've eaten many beets. But have you eaten many flowers? Here's your chance (spoiler alert: they taste like nature). Pork Shoulder Sliced pork on top of beet greens and barley tossed in a tart kimchi vinaigrette. If you feel the need for an entree-sized protein, this is really interesting and very good. Pepperoni Pizza In addition to the much odder stuff, Gristmill was smart to include a sizable pizza section on their menu - the pies are what make the place actually useful for 99% of Park Slope's population (children). But true to form, you've probably never tasted pizza like this: the crust is dark and sour, and the pepperoni is super thick-cut and really delicious. Ice Cream Sundae Ours involved corn ice cream, blueberry sorbet, blackberry jam, and pieces of cornbread. This is the perfectly-weird way to end a meal here. Get one for the table." - Katherine Lewin

This restaurant closed months ago and Google won’t believe me or let me resubmit it. Huge loss for the neighborhood. ————————————— Really excellent food here. They’re known for wood fired pizza, but they’re all about farm-to-table and the ingredients show. I had this wonderful butternut squash soup along with Brussels sprouts with pear and bacon. Really top notch. They get 4.5 stars because there’s a place on the menu under cocktails that says a bartender will help you create something special. I asked for an old fashioned with flavored bourbon of some sort or just a regular old fashioned if that was impossible. Turns out I got just an old fashioned but it was a good one. Still, this was their chance to truly wow me and that fell short. Had that not been highlighted on the menu this would be a 5-Star review.

Lovely outdoor garden seating in the back of the restaurant. The place smells wonderful due to the oven baking all them goodies for us to nibble on. Has a great selection of drinks and small plates to share for happy hour. The entrees were a delight! The food comes out slowly which we didn't mind since my friends and I were catching up. Service was wonderful, constantly checking in on us and clearing our plates, refilling our water, etc.

My friend chose this place after we spent the afternoon wandering Gowanus Open Studios weekend. It was inviting and seeing the wood fire oven walking in and the back outdoor seating sealed the deal. They are serious about their breads and pizzas, along with seasonal ingredients, which is why their offerings are delicious. The waitress was super helpful with her drink recommendations and on point with her food favorites. I didnt think Park Slope had any restaurants to come back to, but I'd be down to check out more of Gristmill.

Went for brunch. Loved this place's potato and sweet potato mash - so delicious. As well as the mushroom risotto dish. Also had the caramel milk shake which was delicious! All the food here was really good and I loved the vibe - very suburban but chic as heck.

Delicious farm to table pizza and salads. Every item perfect and delicious. The sooner you go here, the sooner you can go back and get all the things you missed the first time!

This place is pretty nice. I think they’re still working out the kinks over here but overall it’s a fine dinner choice and a great brunch place. Good cocktails too. Can’t wait to sit in their yard. And ponder. Yard pondering is the best kind of pondering.

Favorite go to spot for a working lunch. Wifi works well and food is super yummy. I have a major food boner for the pepperoni grandma slice.

The back seating at Gristmill is so cozy. Firewood is stacked on wall shelves for the wood fired ovens and herbs are growing from hanging cubbies. There are plenty of delightful unique items on the menu. I had a egg cream soda that was delicious and a first for me. Their pepperoni pizza was delicious too. The style is different from other local pizza shops - the cheese/sauce mixture is thicker or something and the crust is sourdough but the sour taste isn't that strong. Overall it's great. I had a slice of the Concord grape pie and it's out of this world. I was skeptical at first but so happy I had some. Service is excellent. The couple servers were chatting with myself and the other patrons about this and that. They explained the whole prep process involved in making the grape pie.
