"Grnd Sqirl is the kind of place you swing by with your afternoon hiking  group for a cold beer and accidentally stay until the sun goes down. This vowel-less casual pub in Twentynine Palms has the best craft beer list in the area, including locally brewed 29 Palms Beer Co. and San Diego’s Bivouac Ciderworks. For beer nerds, one pint can quickly lead to three.  The bar food is excellent as well, with a juicy bacon and onion  burger dripping with tarragon aioli and a giant pretzel with beer cheese. Live music brings crowds on the weekends, so if you’re with a big group, you can make a reservation ahead of time." - brant cox

"Grnd Sqrl might be the perfect pub. Open since 2021, its rotating craft beer selection is some of the best in the region. Chef Joel Petterson’s menu is ideal for hikers and rock climbers retreating from the nearby national park. A great place to stop for lunch after a hike. My family ordered burgers, chicken wing and salad with tofu. The tofu was seasoned just right and crispy. It was delicious. The icing on the cupcake was the dark chocolate brownie with passion fruit sauce. Order one or two, you will LOVE it

Google
Great high desert restaurant in Twentynine. Inventive menu, great atmosphere and outstanding service. An item was left off my order, and I felt like the salad dressing wasn’t quite balanced flavor wise but the salad was still great. My dining partner had the chicken sandwich of the day (it’s a thing apparently) and she said it was very good.

Google
Chose here since offered pet friendly outside patio dining. The service couldn't have been better! The food and drinks were good; loved their fries. Ordered a plain burger patty for pup and their chicken Caesar was big and tasty. Fun vibe inside and the staff were genuinely welcoming. Don't hesitate!

Grnd Sqrl Twentynine Palms, California We had a great experience here at Grnd Sqrl. We always visit this area, and we were always curious about this gastro pub. People we have talked to always had a greater experience and they said everything was delicious so we decided to try it for ourselves. Upon walking in, the gastro pub looked great. It was eclectic and artfully decorated. The bar was in the middle, but there was plenty of seating all over. The music they played was great and I can see this place being a lively place during the weekend. The menu is limited, but they offer some great menu items. Besides, who wants to read an encyclopedia when you need to order. I love that their menu is small. We ordered several items, and everything was great, especially the Sqrl burger. Don't worry, it's not what your thinking lol. The burger was juicy and cooked perfectly. You can fries, but there is an additional fee. The chicken wings were great too, and they were quite large, and so was the portion. The rest of the items were great, too, especially the dessert. The staff members were great, and they really were outgoing and helpful. They weren't pushy at all. Overall, we had a fantastic dinner and will definitely return for another meal. What we ordered 1. The Stumps with a side of Parmesean Fries Smoked Pork Shoulder, BBQ Sauce, Pickled Slaw, Kosher Pickles, Spicy Mayo 2. The Sqrl Burger with a side of Parmesean Fries House ground beef patty, sharp cheddar, caramelized onions, pickles, bacon, tarragon aioli , Martin’s potato bun 3. Wings - Dozen Served tossed in Shanghai or Buffalo sauce with house made ranch and blue cheese 4. Chocolate Drop Brownie With passion fruit, caramelized walnuts, and whip cream 5. Assorted House Pickles an assortment of several pickled vegetables

Google
Grnd Sqrl is a good option to grab a bite! Their fries with parmesan are absolutely delicious—crispy, cheesy, and perfectly seasoned. The pulled pork sandwich is also a standout, tender and full of flavor. Great food in a cozy spot if you are in the area looking for a restaurant.

Google
We love grnd sql so much! We visit every time we’re in the area and made two stops during our last Joshua Tree trip in early December. The vibes, the food, and the service are always fantastic. I wish we had one in Phoenix :)

Google
The food was delicious. The service was just ok. Not very busy there but took a bit to take our order. Waitress did not know the name of our beers she was serving us. The music was too loud to enjoy yourself. We asked if they could turn it down. They seemed put off by it. When asked about menu items we seemed to get sarcastic remarks. The food and beer was good. The atmosphere and hospitality would not make me come back again. It seemed they didn't care. It was more of an attitude that if you don't like it too bad. Unfortunate as it is a cool place and good food. This was just our honest experience.

Google
Great place to get a beer after a long day in Joshua Tree Park. Worth the drive to the 29Palms entrance. The burger? Outstanding! The rotating chicken sandwich? Just as good! I have no idea what pickled things I had as an appetizer but didn't matter they were all wonderful. The beer selection was well curated as well, serving up many items that an Easy Coaster wouldn't be able to find. The staff were friendly and helpful, and you can tell that they care about each other and the patrons. I wish them many successful years to come.

Scot C.

Yelp
Amazing chef! David at the bar will set you up with a large selection of beers. A great place

Kayla E.

Yelp
This is probably one of the best burgers I've had in my life. I'm now making it a MUST to stop by here whenever I'm in the Joshua tree area. Service was prompt as well :)

Jen M.

Yelp
Yummy food, great service and awesome Merch! The mural is gorgeous. Will definitely be going back.

Carol D.

Yelp
The food - ambiance and service were OUTSTANDING!! I only wish we lived closer....its a wonderful place - a must if you're in the area

Yelp
Drove past this place, lots of people inside & outside, decided to come back to check it out. Ordered two beers, some food (sliders were way too salty), and found a table inside. My husband had a Porter and I had a Consecration...would order again. Staff was busy, line got long at one point. Overall, ok experience but might be a one & done for us.

Yelp
I came here with my girlfriends on a desert getaway weekend. It was hot (of course it was hot, it's the desert). We were seated quickly in a nice air conditioned corner table, next to the photographed neon LED, "This Must Be the Place." I got an ice tea to cool off and the chicken sandwich of the week. The chicken is a staple, but I understand they change up the toppings and style each week. In fact, they offer specials that coincide with the holidays, ex. Corned Beef and Cabbage for St. Patrick's Day. They offer a smaller patio for outdoor dining and it is pet friendly. This is always important to me when traveling with the dogs. Options for beer, wine and even brunch favorites such as mimosas are on menu. A gastropub with something for everyone. They also have music and trivia nights. A new favorite destination for lunch, brunch or dinner in the desert! #GrndSqurl #29Palms #DesertDining #ChickenAllWays

Yelp
Bartenders friendly, helpful and attentive. Beer is great and food is outstanding. Good vibe.

Veronica R.

Yelp
I ordered chicken wings and they were ok, nothing special about them. Their prices are ridiculous for the area that we live in. Something is good there cuz they are always busy, I just haven't figured it out yet I guess.

Amy A.

Yelp
Tomato soup was incredible. Great stop for a snack after hiking in Joshua Tree. Wine and wings also delivered.

Danny W.

Yelp
Friendly folks! Great food! Nice atmosphere I would come back next time I am around here

Digvijay S.

Yelp
Perfect spot for brunch after a hike. Staff is friendly and helpful with their recommendations. Laid back vibe with great selection of beers to choose from. The food was excellent with unique flavors. Chicken wings were cooked to perfection with the right amount of sauce, and the wings weren't dry at all. The hot dogs were delicious with fresh vegetables, and highly recommend the pickles that were freshly made in-house. Overall, we had a great time and would love to visit again.

Scott L.

Yelp
Great service with a nice selection of beers and enjoyable food. Handled our group of 10 even with a packed house. Will come again.

Yelp
I saw a bunch of Yelp reviews touting this place called Grnd Sqrl and I thought, what does it all mean? We were in Twentynine Palms and then we saw the mural on Palms Highway. We got to the restaurant before it opened and people were already seated and waiting. This has got to be a good sign, right? Then you look around and see a neon sign "This Must Be The Place" -- so at this point you just gotta relax and settle in. Squirrel murals and memorabilia abounds. This is your "beer and food oasis in the dez," so you are gonna see craft beers and fresh prepared eats in a laidback groovy setting. We started with the pickled vegetables (it's their thing) and enjoyed the tart and colorful vegs like beets, radish, carrots, cauliflowers in their brined and tart glory. My companion chose the rotating salad which was a Caesar salad with crispy tofu and I picked the rotating sandwich (The Upscale Osan: chicken thigh, gochujang, kimchi, pickled red onion and charred miso aioli on a brioche bun). The chicken thigh was the crispiest crunchiest and tenderest chicken and it was well flavored with the kimchi, daikon and aioli but it was a bit of a mess. The sauces overflowed and the bun fell apart so I ended up using a fork and knife. It was delicious, mind you, I just could not pick it up. We ordered truffle fries which were nothing special. There's a sqrl burger, ground beef not ground squirrel, that sounds good and many other appetizing eats and bevs. This is a friendly and welcoming oasis once you are finished visiting Joshua Tree.

Yelp
We were in Twentynine Palms to spend a couple of days hiking in Joshua Tree National Park. We stopped into the Grnd Sqrl for dinner. What a gem in a small town. We sat up to the bar at 4:30pm as the place was full on a Monday night. We chatted with the bartender as they have a vast beer menu, Mr. B found one to try, and I ordered a cold, crisp glass of Prosecco. Making our dinner decisions, we ordered and enjoyed the gastro pub vibe and our dinners were out soon. Mr. B started with a hazy IPA from North Park Brewing in San Diego, the Hops and Flowers. I am not a beer drinker, and I liked this one, very smooth and drinkable. He had the Finicky Coyote for dinner. A Beyond Patty on a soft bun with arugula, tomato, pickled red onion and avocado. He had Truffle Fries on the side, everything was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. I went back and forth , but finally settled on the East End Grilled Cheese sandwich, not your typical grilled cheese. The sourdough bread was filled with cheddar and swiss cheese, thinly sliced granny smith apples and caramelized onion jam. The menu is cool, the dishes unique and the food fresh, perfectly cooked and absolutely scrumptious. Parking is a little tricky, there is a tiny bit of street parking in the front and side of the restaurant. Behind the restaurant and back behind another building there is a dirt lot and we found parking there. Wonderful eatery in a desert town.

Cassidy J.

Yelp
Great food, ambiance and service! Little pricy, but that's to be expected in the area and we were told by a local that the chef has recieved a Michillen star before! super cool mural and layout, too. Would recommend.

Lisa S.

Yelp
After doing the Fortynine Palms hike, we headed downtown to Twentynine Palms. The main drag is really the highway that goes through the city. We stopped in to Grnd Sqrl mostly because we happened to park right in front of it. I'm so glad we went in. It's got a hip vibe to it with music playing (not sure of genre but it wasn't anything you'd hear on the radio). We wanted a snack and opted for wings and a pretzel. The pretzel came out first and it was steaming hot. Mustard and cheese were the dipping sauces. For wings, we asked about dry rub and our server told us 'they were off the hook' meaning super good and popular. With a coating of a pepper mixture and some berry from Tanzania, we decided to order 6 of those and 6 Buffalo flavored. The dry rub was everyone's favorite. The wings were served nice and hot and they were delicious. Service was great. Food was excellent. Great stop!

Andee T.

Yelp
Great service and food. I wish I got the pretzel but maybe next time. The pork sandwich was tasty. The pickles were pickling.

Joe E.

Yelp
Last August, grnd sqrl was closed during our Twentynine Palms trek to watch the Perseids meteor shower. This year, good fortune smiled on us twice: MORE meteors and grnd sqrl was open! We celebrated our last day in town with a Bavarian pretzel, a pair of burgers and the chocolate drop brownie. grnd sqrl is one of those places where you become part of the ambiance. The party at the table we passed on the way to our table smiled and nodded as if they owned the place, and we felt the same in a few minutes after sitting down. Service was friendly, speedy and efficient like a well-oiled machine, with kitchen runners bringing the food at the peak of preparation. This CAN'T be the same place as in the 1-star reviews. We had planned to save a little of the beer cheese and coarse ground mustard to smear on the main entree but those dreams were dashed as we scraped out the last with the pretzel. The burgers were the perfect shade of pink with condiments that made them come alive instead of drowning them out. The shared chocolate drop brownie was just enough after the first two courses. 2025 won't be a great year for the Perseids so we're planning a foodie weekend and maybe braving the cold to watch the Orionids shower in October 2025 instead. Of course we'll be back.

Yelp
After spending late morning and early afternoon exploring the nearby Joshua Tree National Park, we were verging on hangriness. As soon as we came within range of mobile data service, I fired up my Yelp app to look for nearby nosh. Considering how much of a tourist destination the park seems to be, I was a little dismayed at the slim pickings for non-chain eateries around Twentynine Palms. Grnd Sqrl seemed to be a pretty solid bet, and it was open on Christmas eve eve, so off we went. We rolled in just shy of 2pm and street parking was ample just around the corner from the entrance. There was one patron posted up at the counter outside, and only half the indoor tables were occupied. In short order, we were offered seats of our choosing, handed food menus, and directed to the QR code for their current beer selection. It seems they have a frequently rotating beer list, and the ones I saw looked mighty appealing, especially after hiking around in the desert for hours. I opted for the Sqrl burger, my mom had some kind of pulled pork sandwich, and my dad went down an unexpected path by ordering the lasagna special. We were all pleased with our assorted meals. I also enjoyed washing mine down with a delightful dark brew from Russian River. My burger came out flawlessly. According to the menu, it'd be cooked to medium. Too often, I order my burgers medium or medium rare and they turn out with nary a pink spot to be found. This one was exactly medium, with a great char on the outside, pink throughout, and, upon chowing down, oozed succulent dribbling meat-juices to prove it. I was also pleased with the mountain of crispy fries that I ordered along with my burger. After requesting a side of mayo, I happily mowed through the heap. My parents thought they were overly salted, but I'm basically a halophile, so they seemed great to my taste buds. Our server noted (more than once) that the chef is an award-winning Scandinavian import, and I believe it. I wouldn't be shocked if this place could hold its own among some of NYC's finest gastropubs. And the pricing was totally reasonable, given the great food and surprisingly eclectic beer selections. 100% would come back if I'm ever out this way again!

Jolene W.

Yelp
What a gem! After spending the day exploring Joshua Tree National Park this was the perfect day lace to unwind and grab some dinner. The beer selection was unique, the food was all fantastic (particularly the Caesar salad and pulled pork sandwich) and the staff were so incredibly welcoming and friendly. They also had a live band that was playing some killer music. Definitely will be back anytime I'm visiting the area.

Catherine C.

Yelp
Really fun, poppin gastro pub in 29 Palms! Delicious sandwiches, nice selection of beers and drinks, and service was above and beyond. Ambience is fun, social, it has a local feel mixed with some curious visitors. I had the fried chicken sandwich with garlic parm fries and a blackberry sour. Delish! Awesome place to come by after a day of climbing in Jtree. We will be back!

Mia F.

Yelp
You must Stop by for a bite here!!! The food truly is wonderful. Chef is so creative. Nice, friendly staff. Easy, casual vibe. But great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Great beer and wine choices. Sometimes live music. Always a stop when we are in the area! (Close to JT park entrance via 29 Palms)

sofia p.

Yelp
Half of us didn't want to leave the house to roll downtown to eat, but in the end, this meal changed our life. Wait staff was kind, beers were elite. Chicken sandwich was fried crispy on the outside, and moist on the inside. A few of us had burgers and it might have been one of the best I've had. The special, a beef burgonion (sp?) was fantastic. In a place with very few restaurants, this was a lot better than we expected!

Don T.

Yelp
My wife and enjoyed lunch here on a warm weekday. Our meal included a Sqrl burger, Dank House salad, a fresh pretzel and a serving of habanero salsa. Our order arrived quickly and wash dish was delicious.

Vittoria C.

Yelp
Really delicious burgers. The fries are also great. The service is a little slow so budget some time to not speed through the meal. Truffle fries and Parmesan fries are particularly good.

Samia S.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, we almost didn't get a seat because we hadn't placed a reservation. However, the employee noticed us standing outside still searching for a place and once a table opened up, allowed to come inside and be seated. The customer service was just amazing and the food...... man. The burger was just incredibly flavorful and juicy. The truffle fries were to die for and the ambience was amazing.

Joshua J.

Yelp
Shockingly good food & really great service. Discovered it was trivia night the Thursday I went when was fun. One time I called in an order & they were about to close the kitchen but they stayed open an extra 5 for me to pick it up.

Jina P.

Yelp
I loved the pretzel with the beer cheese / mustard ! Piping hot and delicious! Thank you :)

Sherri M.

Yelp
I was thoroughly charmed by Grnd Sqrl, whether I pronounce it correctly or not (I really want the squirrel to be grand but he may in fact be a ground squirrrel, perhaps even one spotted and picked up slyly by someone lucky). It was hoppin' at dinnertime on Friday but we had no trouble getting a table. Live music set the tone for a fun café atmosphere and the very friendly staff kept the positive vibes going. Food menu isn't huge but two items (one of the salads and the chicken sando) rotate as daily specials. Except for salads and fries, everything is a sandwich. Gluten free bread is an option for most things (and it's actually decent). Beer menu is quite extensive, which is apparently their thing. They also have wine, but no liquor. Two of us shared the dry rub wings, a burger, truffle fries, and a side salad with horseradish vinaigrette (YUM). Fries could have been crispier but otherwise everything was great. Excellent option for good casual eats in 29 Palms.

Sam C.

Yelp
On our quick trip to Joshua Tree we stopped by Grnd Sqrl and it did not disappoint! The food was great, staff was friendly and attentive and they had great beer selection!

Peg S.

Yelp
Gastropub with a lively atmosphere on a Saturday night, fresh salads and yummy chicken sandos. Sadly, we didn't get to try their wings since they ran out?!

S W.

Yelp
Great gluten free options! Delicious GF bread for sandwiches. Amazing chicken sandwich. Will definitely visit again when we are in the area. Wish they are closer to where we live!

L W.

Yelp
Funky little place in 29 Palms that exceeded expectations. Alex the server was GREAT - lovely recommendations and she was a sweetheart with our daughter too. Great beer selection. The food was solid gastropub fare. Had the pulled pork and Korean chicken sandwiches, both very tasty. The French fries were great - we also got the truffle fries, which were better than most - they were just truffly enough without being ridiculous and not too cheesy. Cool merch in the back, too. Will definitely be back next time we visit Joshua Tree.

Angela E.

Yelp
Freakin' good!!! Omg! So glad we tried this little local gastropub while driving through Joshua Tree with the family. Nothing fancy but it stands out in the heart of Twenty Nine Palms downtown center. And it was packed! Staff were friendly but very busy. The food was soooooo good! Two orders of The Stumps, one Finicky Coyote, and one Sqrl Burger. All amazing! Highly recommend upgrading to truffle fries. Quite the mix of clientele - lots of families, hikers, business lunchers and locals. Great vibe!

Dee B.

Yelp
The seasonal Pot pie is heavenly! It's huge so you'll only intend to eat half but you won't be able to stop! Fresh ingredients and the most perfect flaky crust.

Bethany J.

Yelp
This was our second time at this place and they did not disappoint. We both had the squirrel burger. Now I know what you're thinking, and no it's not made of squirrel lol.....I actually asked just out of curiosity. Anyway their burger is fantastic as it was the last time and that is why we came back. They only serve wine and beer as far as alcoholic beverages. Next time we'll have to try something else, but if you're looking for a great burger in Joshua tree, check them out.

Lauren P.

Yelp
Great spot for a casual meal! We stopped for a quick dinner between checking out the national park. Our waitress was incredible accommodating as we asked for the check quickly and a box. The burgers were some of the best we've ever had. We walked in and they got us a table right away. They note on the menu that they don't do substitutions

Sarah G.

Yelp
Food and fun were in large abundance on our visit because it was also open mic night! Definitely a family friendly vibe in the early evening and a great place to grab a bite and a brew! Oh and all the good things to say about our server as well! Kudos!

Karen I.

Yelp
The food was good but pricy for what you got. The squash soup was very good. Service was mediocre. Ambience was good if you like a loud party time experience.

Gretchen M.

Yelp
Great burgers, good music, good beer. Visiting here from Virginia and did not disappoint. Definitely a place to immerse yourself with the locals of Joshua Tree.

Mitch A.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and this place was great! Food was a step above what I was expecting and we would've stayed for a beer if we had more time. We were seated right away and service was fast!

Abtin M.

Yelp
Some of the meanest rudest people work here. I came in with my wife and family. Food was ok not terrible not great but goodness I was blown away at how terrible manners these people had. I'll take my business elsewhere next time. This is not a family friendly place.

Adam C.

Yelp
Just a delicious burger! Absolutely top notch. I'm in LA and this would be at the top of the charts there. Truly a melt in your mouth burger and patty. Fries were also fresh and perfectly cooked. Great beer list, perfect place for a lunch after hiking or a dinner and a beer. Best restaurant in the Joshua tree area, and certainly in 29 palms

Shiso S.

Yelp
Excellent music! Very friendly staff. Super cute motif. Warm neighborhood vibes. Small but great menu of fresh comfort food that works well for herbivores, carnivores and even GF folks like me. Excellent beer and N/A selection (though would love to see a high quality N/A pils or kolsch added to the mix). Only downside was the intense smell of bleach that messed with my truffle fry experience. Hope that's not how it always is. Will def be back in the hopes that the overdoing of chemicals was just a one time thing. Otherwise, LOVE.

Kevin T.

Yelp
Dropped in on a Monday night. Food great. Service great. There was one guy that played like 4 songs then left (Johnny?). He should have stuck around. Sounded original and my digestion would have been better. Glad to have gotten inside

Paula C.

Yelp
Recommended by several locals, we came to check this place out. The service was excellent with, both fast and friendly. They don't have a huge menu to choose from but everything they had was delicious. Was introduced to Mela water which was very good and refreshing. Tried the Sqrl burger with Parmesan garlic fries and it did not disappoint. Also had a taste of my friends Jalla burger, and all of our food was so flavorful and delicious. Only issue and a tip I would offer is don't try to cut into your burger. It is so soft and tender that the whole thing will fall apart. You definitely need napkins to eat these burgers. We came in on an evening where they had a live music playing some good mellow tunes, and it's easy to see why this place is so popular.

Robert C.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice. Came with some Marine buddies, full table of 8. We all ordered burgers, which they all stated were okay, I ordered a Salad , and chicken tenders. They brought two tenders. The salad was brought 8 minutes after the tables food. Said I no longer wanted it, but the waitress stated I had to pay for it. Because life is good and I had my guys there, decided to just take it to go and not create a conflict. But Ive never had a salad come after the food that late at any restaurant. They should also let it be known youre paying 11 bucks for 2 tenders. On top of that we split it three ways and got charged a large party fee of 20% on each of our checks. Wont be coming back

Yered M.

Yelp
I came to this pathetic excuse of a restaurant with my group of 7 from out of town. They were semi busy but nothing too crazy. The servers were extremely rude from the jump, they were making little to no effort to be helpful. They barely checked up on us, and the food was a 3/10 at best in all honesty. The staff then gave us a series of issues that I'd rather not explain, but it's safe to say we'll never come back if ever in the area. Terribly rude staff, bad food, poor experience. 0/5 stars
