Where to Eat Calamari in Monterey County | Eater

"As the Salinas Valley became an agricultural powerhouse — today, almost half of the nation’s lettuce, as well as high proportions of artichokes, cauliflower, and broccoli, comes from the region — the city of Salinas grew with it, becoming the county seat. Today, you can get a taste of historic Salinas at Growers Pub. The restaurant is located in the former home of a steakhouse and still retains the 1940s bar and nostalgic atmosphere. Order old-school favorites like cream cheese–stuffed mushrooms, wedge salad, slow-roasted prime rib, or a calamari steak sandwich with tartar sauce." - Annalise Mantz

I was a bit dubious going in, it just looked a little old from the outside. Well, it is old but it's wonderful, wood paneling everywhere. There is a great looking bar partitioned from the seating area by a wood and glass partition. All the tables are small booths. It felt nice and cozy. The service was good and I had one of the best pork chops I have ever had. It was super thick and juicy, delicious. I have been back since, still great!

Google
Growers Pub in Salinas provided a fantastic family dining experience that exceeded all expectations. From the moment we walked in, the rustic charm of the interior set a welcoming tone. The warm wood paneling and inviting atmosphere instantly made us feel at home. The staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring our table was well taken care of throughout the evening. The food was the true star of the night! Each dish was prepared with precision and packed with flavor. Whether it was the perfectly cooked steaks or the hearty sides, everything felt crafted with care. It’s a place where comfort meets quality, and it’s clear why locals and visitors alike rave about this spot. Definitely a must-visit in Salinas for a memorable meal and great service!

The prime rib was absolutely amazing, the French Onion Soup was very tasty. And the drinks were very good, had a great bartender.

Visited in October 2024 My bosses insisted us to dine in here, so we drove all the way to downtown Salinas from our training site. Seemingly the rest of the team were in a mood of more high-end meals after mostly cooked the dinner by ourselves or bought takeaway from supermarket for days and the deal was settled. We were greeted by the charming old school interior of the restaurant, which has a long history dated back to the early 20th century. No idea how well ventilated these spaces are since I didn't bring my CO2 meter with me (old restaurants tend to have poor air circulation). The meals themselves are very nice, cooked or processed to perfection. I ordered crusted tuna tartare which was fresh (long time having good raw fish like this!), served with seasonal stir fry veggies. My colleagues enjoyed their risotto and medium rare steaks. Price was of course pricy but it's every cent well spent, especially for a treat like this after hard work.

Google
I had driven past this restaurant several times without noticing it until I was on the lookout for a good steakhouse in the area, and it turned out to be the first one that popped up. What a pleasant surprise! The restaurant offers a nostalgic and charming atmosphere that immediately sets the stage for a delightful dining experience. From the moment I walked in, the entire staff was exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Now, let's talk about the food – it was nothing short of amazing! The steak, cooked to a perfect medium rare, was bursting with flavor, and it hit all the right notes. And the creme brûlée? Fantastic! It was the perfect sweet ending to an outstanding meal. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough if you're in the mood for a perfectly cooked steak.

Google
GREAT FOOD! IF The main chef is there... the other guy doesn't even compare, we only had him once! Only once? because now we ask before we go! Can't fool me twice! The bartender is an amazing bartender you would think that it wouldn't matter oh but it does! I can't tell you how many bad bartenders are out there! So we appreciate a good one! Her lemon drops and cosmopolitan are delicious she makes thee best long Island iced teas as well! This is one of my favorite places to dine at! Everything is good but the steaks ah the steaks well, they just melt in your mouth! Mmmmm

Google
We are from SF and came down to take our family member to dinner for her birthday. This dinner experience was exemplary, from the food to the service to the extra care that, I was pleased to see, still come from a classy place. Two of us had the surf and turf. One the risotto with salmon. All these and the drinks were top drawer. Then at the end of the meal, the server brought out a piece of tiramisu for the birthday girl. It too tasted great. This place is a great treat. Thanks for your kind attention to us.

Yelp
Growers Pub - Old Town Salinas If you're ever craving classic steakhouse vibes with top-tier flavor, this is your spot. We kicked things off with their crispy Coconut Shrimp--perfectly golden and paired with a sweet chili mango sauce that hits just right. I went with the Prime Rib, and it was everything a cut of beef should be--tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. My wife ordered the Flat Iron Steak topped with blue cheese and wine sauce--bold, rich, and cooked perfectly. And yes, we saved room for dessert. Their Bread Pudding with ice cream? A must. Warm, gooey, and drizzled in caramel--it was the perfect sweet finish. Service was solid, ambiance was relaxed, and the food was straight-up fire. Definitely coming back. Yelp
I ordered the 20oz ribeye steak rare. I received it medium rare to medium. The meat was very tough. Service was excellent.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in the door we felt really welcome. The photos on the walls are also beautiful. We ordered coconut shrimp which was delicious and the food came out quickly. I had a glass of Cabernet which really complemented my NY Steak well. My son ordered the lobster ravioli which he thoroughly enjoyed. Our server was Jasmine, she was very professional, polite, courteous. The fact that she is beautiful certainly doesn't hurt. Excellent service, excellent food and the dessert is also off the charts delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant! Try it and enjoy.

Yelp
This place!! There're places where you can count in one hand your favorites and this pub is one of them. Our family came in without expectations hungry for dinner and left planning our next visit! The slow cooked steak was by far was one of the best .Our server Donna was so friendly the moment we walked in until the moment we left. Her smile and efficiency just made the place even better. History of Salinas is represented at this place with its people. Kids friendly, family friendly! Highly recommend stopping by if you want to experience real good people and food

Yelp
This is my kind of place! We are new to the area but could tell that this place has been a Salinas staple for at least two generations. Old steakhouse diner vibe with high back booths. Clientele were local businessmen and locals who want an elevated lunch or dinner. Although we weren't having cocktails, it was nice to know they have a full bar. We started with fried calamari. It was pretty good, but nothing we will order again. My wife ordered the avocado bacon cheese burger and I had the French dip. Plenty of roast beef on a French roll with very flavorful au jus. The fries were nicely seasoned and crispy. I had a bite of my wife's burger. It was a flame grilled burger, cooked to the correct temperature with fresh l/t/o and pickles. It was really tasty. Service: Ofelia was our server. She was super friendly and checked on us from time to time. This will be one of our regular stops when we move full time near this community. It will be worth the drive.

Yelp
Chicken Marsala was to die for and my husband's steak was perfectly prepared. Didn't disappoint.

Yelp
Came here with a large party for a weekday lunch. The rustic decor very much matches the restaurant's name. Parking.... Very limited and tight parking directly outside the restaurant Food... food tastes good but they skimp out on the meat. For example, the coconut shrimp appetizer only has 5 shrimp on there. The roast beef sandwich is thinly filled. Service... this is where they lost the most stars. I felt the restaurant was both understaffed and inattentive. Our waiter very rarely checked up on us and it took quite a long time for the food to come out.

Yelp
Old school steak house with great service and delicious scalloped potatoes. Definitely a date night spot.

Yelp
I've been in Salinas for 2 weeks working the race track and finding a place for fine dining has been difficult but Growers was awesome. It's has an old school classic vibe and the food was delicious. The service was great, seems like the locals love it here, as I was the only person from out of town it seemed. Come Check it out.

Yelp
I remember when it first reopened under this current bus. name from The Pub- a place we used to come here for our dinner date once every quarter. Love their dinner booths - the ambiance is relaxing yet very busy

Yelp
Visited a brother who moved to Salinas 5 years back for an epic fishing trip off of Monterey Bay. He took us here for dinner afterwards. The Pub Prime Rib is classic! Small, humble entry which opens up to an old school bar full of patrons watching sports on tvs... we followed the hostess to our table, which was an old-fashioned steak house booth among many. Others were full of couples enjoying dinner. It was obvious that this place was a neighborhood gem. Almost every table was sat at 8:30pm when we arrived! Our server was Jasmine. She was very friendly with a great smile. Very polished and attentive. They were out of the prime rib for the night, except for 1 medium temp cut, so I went with the pork chop, recommended by my brother. Starting salad and warm bread and butter was much needed. Then came the entrées. Plating was beautiful. Bone in pork chop was cooked perfectly! It was so juicy and delicious. The accompanying apple-based sauce with its tart, sweetness paired well. I cleaned the entire plate! The entire service staff were so quick and attentive! They refilled my Arnold Palmer 4 times and refilled our bread once. We were both commenting on how great Jasmine's service quality was on the way out. Next time, I will try their epic prime rib if they don't run out!

Yelp
Me and my wife were looking for a great steakhouse. We decided to try out the pub after reading the reviews online I have to say we were both not disappointed at all. The food was delicious and the service was top-notch. Anyone looking for a great steak I recommend coming in and trying, this place for a nice date! I could not post my review while I was there in the restaurant there was no Wi-Fi service available, but I drove by the other day and I said I forgot to review that. They deserve the five stars I'm giving them thank you.

Yelp
Came for dinner... We were a party of 4 and they sat us in a booth that faced the bar. Terrible table that faced a partition wall between u and the bar. But you know you are not alone cuz the noise level coming from all the drunk locals filling up the bar was off the charts! Our waitress had attitude, the Prime rib had little flavor, and the scallop potatoes were a block of blah. However, my niece said the French onion soup was really good. So there's that. Probably won't go back, unless it's for a cup of soup at the bar.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! I grew up going to this restaurant and it has been 50 years since I had been there. The food was still great and the staff were attentive and kind. Glad to see it is still one of the best places to eat!

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food is delicious. However, this was my first time, and in my humble opinion, the front of house needs work! As soon as we entered, we got our table right away, which was great. someone came out and did ask if we wanted some drinks or water within a couple minutes which was also great. However, after that it took around 25 minutes even with our menus on the edge of the table like we're ready to order before someone came back to see if we wanted appetizers or to even take our order. We were almost going to walk out when they finally came over. On top of that, almost all the tables had bread, but we never got any during the 25 minutes. We were just sitting there watching other people eat. After they finally came to take our order, we then asked the waitress for some bread in which they did bring us some around 5-10 minutes later, but it was just a few little pieces and we were told there was heating up more in the oven and they would bring us some more, which they never did..... which was extremely disappointing because again we've been waiting for so long, and the bread was extremely delicious. My wife originally just got a glass of water however, after the 25 minute wait my wife decided to have a glass of wine so she ordered it and they forgot to bring the wine and we had to remind them when our food finally came. We actually had movie plans that I purchased tickets for in advance which we had to cancel and go to a later show because of this. I'm not sure what the deal was because this was probably 7 PM or so, and was not extremely busy. I didn't count how many groups but it looked like maybe 6-7 tables. it seems like everybody was getting checked on except for us. I can understand a few minutes, but 25 minutes for someone to see if we even want an appetizer or take our order and then forget to bring the wine and on top of that offer us more bread that was in the oven, but they never did.... wow! At one point, I even dropped my cloth napkin on the floor and because they were not checking on us. I had to get up and go grab a new one myself. Moving forward just to really be clear the food was great!!! The staff was extremely nice, especially the host and chef Nino!!! The waitress was extremely nice as well however she just needs to step up her game and make sure that everyone is taken care of and or there needs to be a manager or supervisor that walks around every so often checking on the guests. I mean, if you see a table with two people sitting at it with no appetizers or bread, and the menus just sitting on the edge of the table you would think that would be a red flag but I guess not lol Since this was my first time there, I'll definitely give it another try in near future and hopefully goes better next time. But for around $120 for two people and that's just two plates with one alcohol beverage I definitely expect a little bit better service than that. Well actually a lot better.... lol Hopefully they were just having a bad day and they can redeem themselves next time..., After all, we all make mistakes.

Yelp
Stopped by on a quiet Sunday night on a drive back from Santa Barbara to the Bay Area. The place has a very cool old school vibe. Great looking bar area and lots of comfortable booths in the dining room. My ny strip was cooked perfectly and the scalloped potatoes were great. Bartender poured a delicious martini. Service prompt and friendly. I'm looking forward to coming back.

Yelp
Made our Reservation for a party of 5 at 6 pm on Friday. We were seated and promptly placed our order for Prime Rib. Imagine our disappointment to be told they had SOLD OUT of Prime Rib. At 620 PM on a Friday. The Growers Pub is THE Prime Rib house in Salinas.

Yelp
Great place to stop while on a road trip!! Old school style steakhouse with history vibe. Ordered a delicious rose wine with the coconut shrimp appetizer which did NOT disappoint as well as the steak Caesar salad which was cooked absolutely perfectly. Super grateful to have stumbled upon this local gem.

Yelp
Wonderful prime rib, order early before it runs out. Really everything on the menu is palatable. Over the years along with the pandemic things have changed. Growers Pub makes an effort to provide service, tasty meals, and over the years 78, the ambiance remains the same. Not complaining just noting. It's a local business I do patronize occasionally. I recommend trying it out evening prime rib with extra horseradish and sous.

Dana S.

Yelp
The service is always great. They have amazing prime rib and skirt steak. Great for large gatherings. You can't beat their desserts.

Yelp
Food is great here, people that work here are awesome. Lexy at the bar is amazing, works her butt off and handles the bar by herself all the time. Would highly recommend this place to all my friends!!

Yelp
Service was on point, the Ambiance was cozy and warm, the wedge salad with Steak was hot and delicious. Thanks

Yelp
We ordered thel halibut special served over risotto with a white sauce and my husband ordered a small prime rib dinner with baked potato. My halibut was amazing. Cooked to perfection, I enjoyed every bite. My husband's meat was a generous slice and just as ordered medium rare. We then ordered dessert of bread pudding that was great as well as coconut sorbet. We walked out of there very satisfied with our meal. Ambiencewas great as usual. Good job!

Yelp
I gave this a pity star! You talk about down hill! My family hAs been eating here since the 60s! Nick Cominos would be rolling in his grave if he saw the food served tonight. We got a calamari appetizer that was so tough, like rubber! My husband got skirt steak two small skinny pieces tough as a boot! My risotto was like wall paper paste! We don't drink. We had water and the bill was over 100.00! I asked the server if I could order a cheeseburger for my son. He said no cheeseburgers during dinner!!! Needless to say we won't be going back.... What a shame! Denice Silveira

Yelp
We were visiting this restaurant as we were headed home from santa cruz. My daughter finished her 1st quarter at ucsc and I wanted to reward her with a steak dinner. This establishment was cozy and appropriately seasonally decorated. Our server was helpful and kind with asking recommendations. I think they were short handed but everyone stepped up and assisted with drinks and food. The bar was bulging with patrons so not sure if it was a holiday thing:) we enjoyed ourselves

Yelp
Spotted this place a few weeks earlier and the the old school exterior piqued my curiosity. A quick look at Yelp had me sold so I stopped back by for an early dinner. Sat down at 5:30 on a Friday. No wait. Immediate and friendly service from our waitress who clearly knew her menu. We were first timers so we had to try the prime rib. The prime rib was excellent! Well seasoned, cooked perfectly. Side salad & veggies were nothing to write home about. Our server strongly recommended the Au gratin potatoes over the baked but it was also just ok. None of that really mattered because the prime rib was the star and main attraction. Screw that up and nothing else matters. This place knows their prime rib! And the price was more than fair and reasonable. Btw- we were out of there in 30 minutes. That's efficient service!

Yelp
You walk in and are quickly greeted by the hostess. Our server was So sweet and attentive. Our food was cooked to perfection great job Chef. This place is a MUST to try. I also would like to add our dessert was freshly made I can honestly say it was one of the best cheesecake and creme brûlée we ever had the dessert chef also gets ***** 5 stars. Looking forward to try other items

Yelp
The three of us really enjoyed our meals: short ribs, filet and scampi, and ribeye. The restaurant has a good old steakhouse vibe. The cocktails were great, and the service was exceptional--thank you Donna. We will definitely return.

Bill R.

Yelp
Good old school dinner house for standard American comfort food-steaks, chicken, fish, prime rib, etc. Good caesar salad and a decent French onion soup, but like so many other restaurants they went low ball with the cheese au gratin on top. Melted and browned Gruyère with a bit of Emmenthaler makes a proper flavor to French Onion soup. Mozzarella adds zero flavor and is the cut rate way to make a simple dish. When made with the proper cheese, it adds a rich, nutty, complimentary flavor that lingers on the palate.

Yelp
I've passed by this restaurant multiple times and beer noticed it. Was looking for a steak house in the area and this was the first one that popped up. This restaurant offers a nostalgic atmosphere. The whole staff is very friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing!! The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare full of flavor. The creme brûlée was fantastic as well! I highly recommended stopping by this restaurant is you're looking to grab a well cooked steak! They won't disappoint!

Yelp
Once again, it was another fine meal at a very good value. We had the 20 oz prime rib and the chicken marsala, which came with either soup or salad. We started with excellent cocktails. The salad and entrees were fantastic, and we had leftovers at home. We shared a dessert at the end. The staff was very good, which added to a nice outing.

Yelp
we went tonight. a rainy late afternoon, early evening. We arrive, it is sparsely populated, we decide since a good game is on, to eat in the bar. The bartender, a young woman, attentive and very competent. They are out of the drink my wife wants, but they arrive at a substitution. As our visit transpires, the bartender disappears. We arrived about 4:15. At 6:15 we finally as a long time server there if we could possibly get our bill. We'd planned to get dessert and some coffee and really enjoy the evening, but after all the waiting, we were flabbergasted. There were many upset customers beyond us and two tables of folks just left after waiting 15 minutes without any attention. It was pathetic. No manager, no nothing. We finally got our bill and we left. We have been coming to the Growers Pub for 20 years (or more!) this was such a disappointment.... We may need to pause our visits and determine when things are normal again..... So disappointed. we have been coming here for more than 20 years...

Stephanie W.

Yelp
Friendly staff, fun old school ranch style dining room and bar. Clean restrooms. Open kitchen so you can watch the action. The portions are huge, hot, and very tasty! Can't wait to go back on our next road trip through Salinas.

Yelp
Found this local spot while searching for a nice dinner downtown. I have always passed by and wanted to give it a try and it did not disappoint! Drinks from the bar are solid and the food is very tasty. More than anything I loved how welcoming and relaxed this place is! Started with the potato skins! Plenty of crispy bacon baked under the cheese! Next a wedge with ranch, tasty but ask for dressing it in the side! It's very runny lol Then had the filet special and my friend tried the risotto, which she says was really tasty. Overall a very great place to dine.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about this place; if you like old-school style places, do yourself a favor and visit. Price is on the high price of moderate, but worth it, great value.

Yelp
My Husband & I decided to try this restaurant ~ someone said it's good When we walked in..... no hostess to seat us ~ the Lady at Bar did not acknowledge us; Until we started walking to hostess stand. It was empty in the dining room Two Guys were sitting at Bar ~ Service started out real slow..... Lady (Jasmine) finally came over to us We sat at a table near the window / not far from the view of Bar. We ordered drinks ~ it took awhile to get them ~ ordered food Prawns Cocktail ~ I asked her if they are fresh or frozen ~ she said "Fresh" Wrong!!!! They were frozen & tasted old Orders a sandwich ~ we waited & waited For the sandwich ~ which never came She was TOO BUSY mixing cocktails & dumping them down the drain!! Finally I went to bar; asked Jasmine where our food was, her reply was it coming soon. I cancelled & asked for our check which also took awhile ~ Again Terrible service & gross Prawns!

Yelp
Best steak house in the area hands down. Service was great and Chef Nino is phenomenal

Heidi K. P.

Yelp
We were bummed that they ran out of prime rib, but the fillet was nice. They made bernaise sauce for me; that gets an extra star. The French onion soup was great. Add some brandy to round it off.

Yelp
Our first time eating at the Growers Pub and we were impressed with our server who told us about the history of the restaurant and was very attentive to our requests. We were checking out the restaurant to possibly hold a small office party in the private room. The server waited until after we finished eating to have the manager come over to talk to us about accommodating our party and she showed me exactly how the tables could be set up next to the Christmas tree. We felt like the service was excellent. I wish I asked for the server's name but I hope she reads this review and knows we appreciated her outstanding service. I look forward to planning the holiday party and will be in contact with the manager about the menu. The food was excellent and the prime rib was perfect! The creme brulee pumpkin cheesecake was delicious but the pear bread pudding sealed the deal! Thanks for a memorable and enjoyable dinner... we'll be back soon!

Yelp
The best of everything! The best service, the best food, the best ambience, the best wine selection, and a most wonderful experience!

Yelp
Awful food. Arby's would give their Signature Prime Rib sandwich a good run. Sad to see this place die.

Yelp
This place is so good! We went for a early birthday dinner with my husband. Form the outside it's not very appealing but as soon as you walk in it's amazing! Dona was our server she was amazing and super sweet! The food was top notch! I got the prime rib, my husband got the skirt steak! The scalloped potatoes and the baked potato where so good! But the best was the dessert the crème brûlée was amazing!!

Sue A.

Yelp
Amazing food, as always. There were 5 of us for dinner at 5pm; mushroom appetizers, soup, salads, filet mignon, shrimp scampi, bone-in ribeyes, baked and scalloped potato's pumpkin pie for dessert. Great family meal, warm and inviting, best service around. Been here before and will be back! For an all around great dining experience, treat yourselves to an exceptional meal here!!
