Gubat - Review - Quezon City - Manila - The Infatuation

"Gubat translates to “forest” and is appropriately set in a lush open-air garden. The hidden-in-the-woods ambiance sets the mood for rolling up your sleeves and digging into the messy fun of a kamayan meal, or the quintessential Filipino dining experience of eating with your hands. But here, the simple but well-done grilled and fried ulam (main dishes) come on individual banana leaves, served with adobo rice and the fiddlehead fern, tomato, and salted egg salad known as pako. Our top pick is the deep-fried lechon kawali rice meal, packed with that perfect ratio of crunchy skin, tender meat, and juicy fat, and best dipped in vinegar for a welcome hit of acid." - Jasmine Ting

The 38 Best Manila Restaurants | Eater

"In 2018, owners Biboy Cruz and Cereb Gregorio, owners of Kusina Luntian in Baler (a surf spot northeast of the city), opened a version of their surf town restaurant in Manila, rebranding it Gubat. The restaurant serves binalot, meals of rice in banana leaves, in a small bonsai garden where eating with your hands is encouraged. The lechon kawali (deep-fried pork belly), adobo, and piniritong isda (fried blue marlin steak), served with rice and lightly pickled vegetables, are some of the best sellers." - Toni Potenciano

Best filipino food I’ve tried when I was Philippines. Food was really tasty and love that they serve in banana leaves. You have option of not using utensils so you can eat the filipino way which is magkamay (by hands) or whichever is comfortable! Drinks were really refreshing too love the calamansi juice. Place is clean and vibe is quite nice. Can get busy but it is worth the wait.

Worth the wait! It gets busy on a friday night but it’s definitely worth your time. Gives you a break from modern minimalist design and helps you embrace the loud and proudly Filipino. I love this restaurant, and I will be taking my foreigner guests here from now on!

There’s a magic to their no-frills, incredibly simple food that defies explanation; it’s just genuinely good and highly addictive. While I can’t pinpoint the exact reason, I find myself returning to this place regularly. Crucially, this particular branch offers a much better dining experience than the CP Garcia outlet. The space feels larger and the tables are comfortably spaced. Exceptional service is a constant, though the notorious parking difficulties persist. Regardless of the parking pain, the quality of the food and the pleasant setting make it absolutely worth visiting.

We loved the adobo and lechon kawali most! We went here on a sunday at 10am, but there were already lots of people coming in. Serving time was around 10-15mins, street parking for cars, there’s like a slot for motorcycle that can fit 4-6 bikes I think. We enjoyed the kamayan experience! Ended up ordering 3 extra rice pa. Been wanting to try this for a long time. We visited around lunchtime and there’s a queue for table. We are seated within 10minutes fortunately as according to the server wait times vary. They do not have utensils and encourages to eat with bare hands. We ordered dinakdakan, halabos na hipon, rice, salted egg with tomato. The Pako is very notable as it tasted different compared to previous experiences. It is a bit sweet which complements their viands. Dinakdakan and halabos na hipon were so good as well and their rice is well cooked. Price is a bit expensive to merit 5 stars. Street parking only

Food: Good Price: Extremely reasonable Ambience: Fascinating Service: After 30 minutes when the patrons got visibly less, I followed up on our order but surprisingly, they apparently lost our order. But with the 10+ service people there seeing a table and a Number standie being bypassed by latter numbers, wouldn’t the staff proactively check? But they rushed our orders once they realized (took total of 40 minutes) and were very apologetic. Will come back: yes for sure. But I hope they improve on their process.

Great food and love the boodle-fight ambiance. Enjoyed their Dinakdakan and Lechon kawali along with the pako salad and salted egg + fresh tomato. Will come back to try other food they have, but must try here when near Maginhawa.

Ambience is so relaxing, garden and backyard style with fish ponds and turtles. Filipino food, you need to use your hands when eating here, so if you are not used to it, bring your own utensils. Serving takes time but food serving is big. Ample tables ang chairs but queue during lunch is long so come early.
