A Dozen NYC Restaurants for Celebrating Diwali

"A Punjabi restaurant that opened in August, Gulaabo, from the Baar Baar team, is offering specials for Diwali in addition to its full menu, including a chaat platter, a kebab platter, Diwali special thali ($25 vegetarian, $30 with meat), and a mithai platter of sweets." - Robert Sietsema, Melissa McCart

We arrived with high expectations, but unfortunately, only half our group could eat due to nut allergies, as many dishes contain cashew or chickpea flour. The dinner menu felt rather limited. The food arrived lukewarm, and by the time I finished one roti, the curry had cooled. Be sure to specify how you’d like your roti cooked, or you might get one with burnt spots. The music was a bit too loud, making conversation challenging. There’s an automatic 18% gratuity, regardless of service quality. While one item was missed from our order, they did adjust the bill after we mentioned it. Overall, it was a fairly average experience—nothing special.

Me and my Mom went there to celebrate my Dad's Birthday. We ordered all his favorite dishes and his favorite dessert. We loved it. Everything we ordered was delicious. The staff was amazing. I can't say enough good things about the staff. They were amazing. I really liked their Kulcha with Chole and Paneer Tikka appetizer.

The food was phenomenal and loved the ambience of the restaurant. The servers were friendly and attentive to our dietary choices. Overall, I do recommend to try the eccentric take on the Indian cuisine.

I had a wonderful experience in this exotic Indian restaurant. It’s just beyond my expectations. The food was delicious I ordered Loki kofta with Indian bread and dahi Bhalla with Gulaab masala sharbat. All are super tasty. And Akshay who is working there helped me to decide my menu. He was very quick in taking my orders till the delivery on my table. And time to time he is keep asking how’s the food and do I need anything else. Such a wonderful service never seen even in a fine dining restaurants. Will be going back again and again. Thank you and all the best for the future.

Slightly on the expensive side but delicious food. We had the veg platter. Also, Mocktails are good. If you love Bar Bar in NYC you will love this one as the same chef owns both of them.

Gulaabo is a delightful gem situated just steps away from the bustling Times Square area, where thousands of people are constantly taking selfies and capturing memories. The restaurant offers a beautiful setting to enjoy Indian-style cuisine amidst the vibrant cityscape. Upon arrival, I was immediately impressed by the simple yet classic ambiance. The decor strikes a perfect balance, creating an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience. We ordered two dishes along with water and tea. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, with the total bill, including gratuity, coming to around $57. Considering the prime location and quality of food, Gulaabo provides excellent value for money. Overall, Gulaabo is a great spot for anyone looking to enjoy good Indian food in a charming setting near Times Square. Whether you're a local or a tourist, it's definitely worth a visit.

Google
Gulaabo is one of my favorite high-scale Indian restaurants in the city. I’ve always loved Baar Baar which has a more modern and fun twist, but for a fancy dinner, this is the place. I came with a friend and got two appetizers and two mains and we were surprisingly stuffed by the end. The drinks, for one, were incredible. I love the touch of fresh flowers and spices. For appetizers, we got the golgappe and the samosa from the Holi menu. They were both so flavorful, and I loved the addition of pomegranate. The quantity is on the smaller size, but the quality of the food definitely made up for it. The mains were incredible. The lamb chops are seasoned to perfection and the paneer tikka masala and garlic naan were so amazing. To top it off, the manager and servers were incredibly kind and warm. I will definitely be taking my friends here, especially because the vibes are great for a family style meal or romantic date night. Would highly recommend to any one looking for Indian food midtown!

Google
We were in the area so decided to have dinner at this establishment. We ordered pani puri and aloo tikki chaat for appetizers. Pani tasted good but the puris seemed old and had weird oily aftertaste. We requested a change and they gave us new ones. They were slightly better, i would expect a better quality from a fine dining restaurant. The chole were also smelling funky in aloo chaat but we didn’t wanna complain about everything so just ate it anyway. Got only 1 piece tikki in the entire portion of aloo chaat, which is disappointing for the price. For mains we order paneer tikka masala and naan. Naan was soft. Paneer was sweet. Everything was pretty mediocre and also they add 18% gratuity by default!

Yelp
We had several Indian food lovers and a complete newbie to Indian food in our group. The wait staff was kind and right on target with his recommendations! All the food was gloriously delicious! It was a busy time in the restaurant, but we were treated with calmness and patience. A++

Yelp
Gulaabo is my favourite spot for Indian cuisine. The chef Param is so humble. The staff is great. Gulaabo serves some of the best authentic North Indian cuisine. Amritsari fish and Chole kulcha are a must to try.

Yelp
What a delightful gem of a place! It has a beautiful interior and attentive staff, but the food is definitely the star. Don't pass on the small plates! We started with the Golgappe and the Dahi Bhalla. The Golgappe is a culinary adventure - puffed crispy spheres of dough, where you poke a hole in one side, load it up with filling, and top it with a splash of tamarind or mint water for a delightful bite of deliciousness. The Dahi Bhalla is a surprising taste explosion - sweet and savory, creamy and rich. The Amritsari Kulcha is a delectable flatbread (looking like a massive fish filet when it arrives, topped with melting butter). The chickpea chole and raita are perfect toppings. For the entree, I had the lamb seekh kebab, which has intense lamb flavor and spice with a touch of heat. My companions got curries, which were full of flavor and heat. I also enjoyed a Genda Phool (marigold-infused gin with turmeric), which was pleasantly floral and not too sweet. Definitely looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Excellent food. Very authentic and tasty. The only negative is that they have a very limited menu for lunch even on the weekend. They don't say that on their website or when taking a reservation. The portion sizes are small for the pricing. We had travelled over 2 hours to try the food here and quite disappointed to find out half the menu was not being offered. Service was nothing to rave about but pretty standard. Restaurant has a nice decor but was a little noisy and could be maintained better.

Yelp
Located in theatre district with nice ambience, 2 level of seating andenu focused on Punjabi dishes and cocktails inspired from Indian flavors. We made a reservation for Monday eve and seated right away. Restaurant was pretty occupied for a Monday. We ordered few cocktails and vegetarian Kebab platter to start. Drinks were good and complimented the food. Platter also includes daal and a naan as well so it's good enough as dinner for 2 people. All kebabs in platter were amazing but dal was okay. For entrees - we had Amritsari Kulcha (Aloo stuffed Naan) which comes with Pickle and chhole, Aloo Vadi and kadhi Pakoda. Kulcha and aloo Vadi was really tasty and flavorful, kadhi Pakoda was ok. Overall, it was a great experience with good food and cocktails.

Yelp
Gulaabo is a delightful addition to the already buzzy Indian food scene in NYC. It's same team behind hit restaurants like Baar Baar, Gulaabo is all about Punjabi food at its purest. Don't fool this to be a touristy spot, it's quite the opposite. The ambiance is elegant, dimly lit and gives WV vibes. We tried the restaurant week menu which had some fantastic items for apps/mains like lamb seekh kebab, golgappe shot, Tawa fish, Pind da chooza, param singh da meat, makhan naan, and the "gulaabo" gulab jamun with rabdi for dessert. I kid you not I'm highly critical about Indian food and one bite into each item took me back to Delhi. Simply delicious! They have interesting Indian flavors inspired cocktails as well infused with favorites like paan & chai. Service is great & on point. Gulaabo won my heart - I would go all my way in Times Square for Gulaabo.

Yelp
Great Indian restaurant located in the Theater District. It's expensive for Indian food, but the flavor and ambiance totally makes it worth it! We started with the Golgappe. It was a make-your-own style Panipuri. It was good but probably a dish that I will skip next time. For entrée, I had the Pind Da Chooza (which is a fancy way to say Chicken Tikka Masala). I thought it was excellent and packed a lot of flavor that you would not typically find in a Chicken Tikka Masala. The dish did not include any rice or naan, so we decided to order the Makhan Naan; it was a huge piece of naan that my wife and I was able to share. Overall, the restaurant was great and I'm sure that I'll be back. I do wish it wasn't as pricey. A chicken Tikka Masala dish with a side of either rice or naan should not cost $42.

Yelp
I was craving Indian food in the timesquare area so decided to give this place a shot. We didn't have reservations but the hostess sat us right away. We ordered paneer tikka masala, dal dhaba and garlic naan. Sadly the food was served at a barely warm temperature and that's not ok, esp dal. It was served in an iron skillet so you would expect it to be hot. I asked my server to fix it. He took the dal back and came back with what looked like the same skillet with some more dal topped off. It was maybe 2 more degrees warmer... they had 2 cubes of butter on the dal that didn't melt until we paid our check.. that shows how tepid it was even after asked to fix it. Panner was just ok, coz it seemed like it was premade and just put in a warmer. Had this food been hot, I would have enjoyed the taste. Garlic naan was good but overpriced $10!! Other than that, service and ambiance was good.

Yelp
Visited Gulaabo the week it opened earlier this year. It's operated by the same team that runs Baar Baar. The restaurant is bright and homey, and the staff was very attentive/helpul. Dahi Bhalla (4.5/5): Fluffy lentil dumplings in a tangy yogurt sauce. Burst of flavors and must try, but a very small portion Tandoori Kumbh (3/5) - cheese-stuffed mushrooms, sauce was flavorful but runny, okay overall Paneer Tikka Masala (4/5): The Paneer Tikka Masala was rich and creamy. A classic, and a good vegetarian option Paan Drink (5/5): lught, slightly sweet and a very unique incorporation on a classic indian snack. The paan flavor really came through Gulabo feels high end and offers great cocktails. The dishes were hit or miss, but would definitely come back to try more!

Yelp
This restaurant was a five minute walk from the hotel we were staying in on our recent NY trip, so we decided to try it out for dinner, and we are happy we did. The ambiance was fantastic, and the service was excellent. For starters, we tried Golgappe and Harabhara kabab, and they both were yum! For the main course, we had garlic naan and paneer Tikka masala. The garlic naan was perfect, and the paneer tikka masala was delicious. Star of the night - The Gulaabo, which is their gulab jamoon with Rabdi. The presentation was beautiful, and the gulab jamoons were super moist and finger-licking good. We loved eating here. Thank you, Gulaabo.

Yelp
Fantastic Indian food near the broadway district. This may be the best Indian food that I had ever tried. The platter was good but the curry was even better! I highly suggest this spot for the great location, tasty food, and kind servers.

Yelp
We have recently visited them This timeless quintessential restaurant located in Theatre District of New York City. They have recently launched their PUNJABI THALIS for their lunch service. Both Vegetarian and Non vegetarian options are available.. There thalis are very carefully curated to provide a wholesome and balanced meal. It brings together a medley of authentic Punjabi dishes, showcasing the essence of Punjabi gastronomy. It typically consists of an assortment of Starters ,Pulao ,curries, dal (lentils), Paneer , meat dishes Indian bread, rice, salad and signature dessert. We tried Genda Phool Paan NON-VEGETARIAN THALI (Chicken Tikka / Tawa Macchi) (butter chicken / param singh da meat / kadhi pakora/ dal dhaba) (Raita / salad / pulao / naan or roti) (Gulab jamun) VEGETARIAN THALI (Aloo tikki chaat / hara bhara kebab ) (paneer tikka masala/ lauki kofta / aloo Gobi / dal dhaba) (Raita / salad / pulao / naan or roti) (Gulab jamun My personal favourites Genda phool ( cocktail) Lauki ka kofta , Kadhi pakodi , Param Singh Da Meat , Pind Da Chuza and their signature The Gulaabo Gulaabo is the ideal place to head for celebrations, corporate luncheons, romantic dates, and experiences to remember. Stop by and dine in at a contemporary and elegant space.

Yelp
This restaurant was close to our hotel in Times Square. We ordered the Golgappe and Hara Bhara kabab. The Gol Gapp was standard adre, but the Hara Bhara Kabab was melt-in-the-mouth good. We also had the Paneer Tikka masala with garlic naan. The taste of the food was on point, and the spice levels were good. The Gulaabo is their dessert offering, which is gulab jamoon with Rabdi. The first thing that catches the eye is the presentation. The Gulab Jamoons and the Rabdi were exceptional. I am not a dessert guy, but I will eat this again. Finally, it is a smallish place, but the ambience is great. The service was also top-notch

Yelp
Great food and service. We really enjoyed all of the food and the drinks were even better! My favorite dish was the rabbit. Definitely would return!

Yelp
Excellent lamb kebabs. We ordered the chicken curry and the goat curry; both were succulent and flavorful. Masala chai at the end was a perfect way to finish the meal.

Yelp
One of the very few places open on Christmas Eve. Wanted to visit after seeing on several Instagram reels. We tried the veg kebab platter, dahi bhalla, pani puri for appetizers and lauki kofta curry, paneer tikka masala, amritsari wadi aloo, Pind da chooza for entrees. The appetizers were all good. The entree gravies tasted pretty similar to each other. Quantity on the lower side but good quality of food. Interesting cocktail options with flavors like kesar and paan. Menu items a bit limited, restricted variety and lack of customization for eg. They couldn't serve tea without sugar (because it's premade with sugar). Average experience.

Yelp
Happened to see a post of this Indian restaurant in Instagram from the hotel while looking for a place to eat dinner during our stay. They were busy when we tried to reserve a table but when we walked in while passing by, were kind enough to adjust and had a table for us. We ordered their seasonal sarson ka saag that came with traditional white butter, jaggery and 2 makki ki rotis and a chicken tikka masala. Both were delicious. Tandoori roti was a bit thinner and hence dryish. Service was impeccable, dishes appeared almost immediately after we ordered them. Definitely a place to go if you ever are in Times Square area. Sorry, we ended up eating since we were famished and forgot to take pics so no images of the delicious food.

Yelp
This place is an amazing find so close to Times Square! If you are in the are don't miss the opportunity to have dinner, or lunch here. The ambiance is great for a date night, the food is so flavorful and delicious, and the staff are so friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Gulaabo is a new regional Indian addition to the theater district that many of us anticipated and welcomed. My first visit was great, a work dinner that yielded good surprises including the Amritsari fish (flaky, dry, perfectly cooked, deep flavors), Pind da chooza aka butter chicken aka chicken tikka masala (moist boneless chicken, deep, fiery gravy) and the gol guppas (too few puris for paani, chutney and filling, but good tastes). For about $175 for two adults it was a solid 8/10 meal and ok value for money especially for the location. A few weeks later things have gone downhill. The same dishes are lifeless and completely changed. Amritsari fish now looks and tastes like fish fingers. Pind da chooza has little flavor in the meat or sauce, and they were clearly cooked apart. Gol guppa pooris were rancid (old oil) and the green paani tastes like preservatives. Even the cocktails have gone south in taste and presentation. To add insult to injury is a standard 20% tip for 5, and menu prices have shot up in the intervening weeks. For our party of three adults and three kids this turned out to be a $400 bill. Did not want to stiff the attentive waitstaff so I added $25 to the inflated $375 restaurant bill. Haute Indian is here to stay in the city thanks to Unapologetic Foods - Dhamaka, Semma, Adda etc. There's a reason those restaurants command their lofty prices with a James Beard, Michelin star and consistent, searing flavor profiles in tow. Unfortunately Gulaabo has none, and it charges more. Asking customers to pay $10 for a bottle of water, $16 for two naans and $40 for four pieces of fried dough with some condensed milk (Gulaab jamun with rabdi) was insulting. Hope you can fix this Gulaabo, and bring back your chef from last month! Disappointed in Harlem.

Yelp
What a find! This place is very small, but WOW do not miss it. The place is very nice and super clean. The portions are HUGE and the flavors are amazing. Only thing we didn't care for was the volume of the music, a little loud for our preference. One order of naan can feed 4-6 people!
google avatar

Aimee H.

Yelp
The decor is tasteful and nice with low lighting which creates a relaxed atmosphere. The staff were helpful and advised us on their most popular dishes which was helpful for our first time there. We came during restaurant week as their menu seemed to be one of the best. In addition to the set courses Golgappe to start, we ordered Aloo tikki chaat, Chule da murgh, Makhan Naan, Murgh tikka, Param singh da meat, Zeera Pulao, and had the set Gulaabo dessert) All of the meat was so soft and juicy and the curries were super flavourful. The waiter also asked us what spice level we wanted which meant we were all happy. The dessert was delicious and so moreish. One of the best restaurants in the area!

Yelp
Really good food !!loved everything we ordered ! 1) Tandoor chicken Tikka 5/5 2) Stuffed Mushroom 4/5 3) Paneer Tikka Masala 5/5 4) Amritsari kulcha 4/5 - (because Chana was too little for the size of kulcha ) 5) dessert was amazing 5/5 6) mixed daal - 4/5 7) aloo wadi 4/5 Overall for a restaurant which opened 3 weeks ago 1) service was 5* 2) good was 5* 3) ambience 5+* super cute 4) pricey yes yes ! But I m okay to discover this find I hope they keep up with this vibe !!

Yelp
It's not easy finding a reasonably priced restaurant that serves good food, close to Times Square. My friends and I were attending an event close by and thought the Restaurant Week menu looked interesting. It was that and more. The only thing I didn't really care for was the Aam Ka Achar cocktail which was made with pickled vodka - it really tasted gherkinish! Altho it wasn't to my taste despite the fact that I like pickles, it actually worked with the meal.
google avatar

Mohit D.

Yelp
Tourist trap. Significantly over priced, small portions and poor quality. It's a shame because I was really excited about this place but this review is based on a dine-in and take out experience. Garlic naan for $18 and it's tiny? The entrees are smaller than typical restaurant and below average.

Sagar D.

Yelp
Ambiance of the restaurant was decent except background music can be a bit louder for some customers. The food is pretty good in quality. Their Amritsari kulcha is a must try dish and I had the best gulab jamun desert in the city so far. I ordered their Murgh Tikka and it was served slightly cold and not even warm, although the taste was good. Overall my experience was good until I checked the receipt of the bill on the next day. This restaurant tried to show me their good gesture against their cold served murgh tikka so they gave me dessert on the house. OK thats nice but, when I checked the bill receipt the next day, it showed me that they have added 18% gratuity on my bill and we were only 2 persons, my wife and I. Now, most of the places I visited have auto gratuity if it is a party of 5 or 6 people at least. Furthermore to my surprise, gratuity was calculated based on the total amount INCLUDING DESSERT........So eventually, they secured their higher gratuity (which I might not have given 18%) and they charged me 18% of the dessert as well. My disappointment is that if you want to make money, make money without showing false gestures, and if you want to show customer your good hospitality, please don't play these smart mathematical games in your final check (evidently it wasn't smart enough). I would have happily given decent gratuity and would have come back as well. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant on this point. There are plenty indian restaurants who serves equally good food or better in quality and more importantly with good hospitality so customers would want to visit again and again.

Yelp
The atmosphere was fantastic- not too loud, comfortable chairs, and space to breathe. The decor was modern with color. We started with the Punjab specialty Sarson de Saag which was sweeter than we had expected. The dish was quite filling and heavy as a starter. We enjoyed the kebabs - the murgh tikka chicken and the lamb seekh. Both were delicious. The lamb had some heat to it. Service was excellent- they were there when we needed them. Prices seemed high but it is the Times Square area. I'd go back.

Jane K.

Yelp
Enjoyed the food very much. Delicious and super warm and fresh. We had the kulcha, bhatura and paneer burji - all so delicious! Decor is nice. It would likely be more popular if they were in a better (bo -touristy) location.

Yelp
Gulaabo is a Punjabi restaurant that opened two months ago in the Theater District. I chose this restaurant to have a Diwali lunch with a friend as thali meals were served. A thali meal is a large tray with cups filled with various foods including dessert. Here two were on the menu: non vegetarian for $22 and $35 and the same prices for vegetarian. Jennifer and I took the non vegetarian for $22. Thankfully I ordered the golgappas which is a snack of crispy fried balls which we filled with chickpeas and ate it with tamarind and mint sauce. As our lunch took an hour to come this tiny appetizer appeased our hunger for a while. The restaurant was packed with customers and I wondered while waiting if the chef had run away. Finally our thali meals came and we dug in to eat. There was chicken, goat curry, black lentils with another yellow lentil, yogurt, basmati rice and naan cut into three pieces. While the food was tasty, the dahi (yogurt) was sweet when it should have been plain. I complained about it in Hindi. We polished off almost every bit but Jennifer doesn't eat goat so she left her curry. The noise level here was high and a table with several loud children next to us made us feel harried. Thankfully they left soon afterwards. The servers were friendly and trying to please all the customers including us At dinner à la carte entrées seemed pricey.

Yelp
Definitely conveniently located in the theater district the atmosphere is very quaint and cute nice and bright. I sat at the bar and my service was great I had one of the curries goat with mustard sausages and chef special recipe oh my gosh it was outstanding excellent amount of spice the goat was tender and flavorful the non was absolutely a beautiful piece of art I had to send pictures to my Indian family to let them know what great food I was eating.

Yelp
I really enjoyed Gulaabo! The drinks were really nice with a kick to them. The food was great too - we had the chicken and dahi bhalla. I loved the dahi bhalla but wish that the quantity was a bit more. Like two pieces. The gulab Jamun was so soft and yummy! Would definitely recommend to check out the place once!

Yelp
Gulaabo is truly a gem in the madness that is times square! Food: The food is an homage to Punjabi India, with chaats, kebabs, and delicious curry dishes to remind you of back home. The lamb chops are a must have, as well as the gol gappe and lamb keema kulcha. The chicken tikka also melts in your mouth. For curries, the goat curry is phenomenal, and the paneer dish packs a punch with some delicious heat. Ambiance: Stepping in, you'll forget you're in times square. Beautifully decorated and has pink rose details (because that's what Gulaabo means). The place has an upstairs and downstairs. Service: Extremely friendly and attentive servers, and managers also make their rounds to make you feel welcome as the place is new. Definitely run, don't walk, to Gulaabo !

Yelp
Came to this opening all the way from Jersey and was definitely happy about the ambiance and excitement from the staff. Drinks are pretty good but the most important part, the food, definitely did not meet my expectations at all. Serving portions is extremely small and expensive at the same time. Our bill for 4 people was $220 + tip and we still left the spot hungry. This is usually never the case when we go to Indian restaurants! Paneer makhani was really good and naan too, but the naan was extremely overpriced in my opinion. I think it's $8 for one piece. Overall, I don't think I would go back. Even for NY, the prices and portions just don't correlate. I've been to many Indian restaurants in the city and I was definitely disappointed leaving this one.
google avatar

Raj S.

Yelp
Great experience at this new Indian restaurant run by the owners of the ever so successful Baar Baar Restaurant. Everything tasted good from veg to non-veg dishes. Prices start from $15 for veg items and $22-$32 for non-veg which was quite impressive for a heart of "Theater district" type of restaurant. Awesome vibe, reservations recommended....

Karishma K.

Yelp
Gulaabo is a delicious, timeless place right in the center of Times Square. My friend and I went here after a broadway show and the food and service (Rishab) were fantastic. The food makes it seem like you're directly back in india and it had some of the best Punjabi food in NYC. The presentation of the dessert was also incredible. I will definitely be back!

Rachana D.

Yelp
I think the food was good. The service was fast and the environment was very nice and calming. I would definitely recommend the place.

Smita V.

Yelp
Such a wonderful experience here! The server recommended the Paan cocktail which so delicately flavored and perfect! Enjoyed the Malai kofta as well which was also pleasantly light and not cream laden as one expects from most Indian restaurants ALL of all the staff - right from the hostess to the Manager to the servers were all pleasant, polite and gracious which made the experience even more memorable! The ambience is pleasant and the location convenient - I would definitely return here on the next trip!

Vishnupriya T.

Yelp
Ambiance: It's a new restaurant so the ambiance is still in better condition Food: Taste is average. The chicken in chicken pulao was not fresh. Only 4 paneer pieces were served in a dish, Roti and Partha are kid's meal sizes. Overall the quantity is much less, one dish barely enough for a person. And the cost is 3 times that compared to other Indian restaurants Usually, onion and lemons are given on the side without any additional cost. But here they charge hefty. Service: Too many attended but still service is bad and there is a delay in food delivery. Overall it's a super bad restaurant experience for the money they are charging. Please DO NOT GO to this restaurant

Yelp
Loud music and superb location hence on expensive side but overall fairly decent food. Their Kulcha combos are worth trying for and filling for one person.

Ahmad F.

Yelp
Good service and quality food. Little pricy but overall good. Music was loud and that made everyone speak even louder
google avatar

Ed W.

Yelp
The food across the board is spectacular, and the setting is a lovely upscale oasis in the theatre district. One star off for the unnecessarily loud music level, which no one is looking for prior to a show, and the unimaginative wine list, which feels like it was copied from any number of other Indian restaurants. The food deserves better than syrupy rieslings and Pinots.

Jeet A.

Yelp
The ambiance was great. The lunch menu is not flexible but great quality. service was wonderful

Positives: beautiful decor/plates/cutlery/etc, well-situated near the Broadway theaters and Times Square, the curry, rice, and naan were well-prepared, service was more than decent, cocktails featured unique ingredients and were average price Negatives: The food is largely overpriced (even for a restaurant near Times Square) - a small bowl of rice was $10 after paying $22 for a smaller-than-average bowl of curry. Also, the descriptions for some of the cold items on the menu could be better. One of the descriptions (Dahi Bhalla) makes it sound like you are going to get a fried ball that you can dip in some sauces but what came out was a cold ball that was doused in yogurt and spices. It may just be due to my ignorance about Indian dishes, but I imagine with the proximity to Times Square, they will get a lot of people who are unfamiliar. It is not a great feeling to be served something cold when you expect warm. Also, the Golgappe tasted stale and the liquid to be poured on the filling for it was also very cold. Overall I would say this is a decent place for cocktails, but understand that having dinner here will be more expensive than it probably should be.

Yelp
Not that great! Appetizers ( kababs were good). Nans we're oily and tasted like tortillas. Upon asking, we were told that's the way they are cooked. Sarson ka saag not good. The roti did not taste good. Lamb curry was okaaay. I have had better! Overall, overpriced for your satisfaction! Food needs improvement!

Yelp
Everything we ordered was pathetic, not nearly as good as Indian food elsewhere. The size of the chicken tikka masala was skimpy, but once we tasted it, we didn't care as it wasn't good. It's expensive and a waste. The place looks good, but the food is the worst Indian food I've ever had = and way more costly.

Yelp
Food was below mediocre and some chaat dishes like the gol gappa were strangely bitter. They tried to fix the flavor but still did not pull through. After the meal they gave some gulab jamun on the house because of the flavor issues. Portions were crazy small for what you are paying for. This restaurant is not worth it and I personally do not recommend going.

Yelp
What an amazing experience! We were busting NYC from Ohio and stumbled upon this place while touring Times Square. And walked in. The vibe was desi and the ambiance had a welcoming appeal to it. The menu was presented in a creative way. The cocktails were complex and fusion flavors which worked together magically. The best part of the meal was the dessert.the gulaab jamoon melted in your mouth, had fresh rabrii dipped on it coating it in a delightful way. The kulfi was fresh tasting with unique flavors.. A 6 star experience!!!

Yelp
Very cool creativity of Indian food flavors alcoholic drinks. Food was amazingly well spiced, should go on mild if not comfortable with spices. Well served and hospitality. Good knowledgeable servers. Enjoyed the delicious visit.

Yelp
I'm so happy I found this place, close to my apartment! I'm very picky about Indian food, and I'm used to all the traditional dishes; however, the uniqueness, presentation, amazingly robust flavor of their dishes will definitely keep me coming back for more! I want to try everything. So far the rice, garlic naan, lamb chops, dal, and the bone in chicken with vegetables and rice dish (enough for two days!) was perfect! fun non-alcoholic drinks too!

Yelp
We loved Gulaabo! The food was absolutely delicious, my favorites were the tikka masalas, lamb kebab and aloo tiki chaat! I am also obsessed with their kulcha and desserts! The vibe in the restaurant is amazing it is the perfect place for a date night or any celebration! I was in love with their paan cocktail - I am very picky about my cocktails but this one knocked it out of the park! Would recommend going to check it out asap - their staff is the best and super helpful as well!

Yelp
Limited menu - average/basic. I ordered the vegetarian thali and they ran out of a couple of items after I placed the order and replaced with an alternatives of what seemed like leftover. Ambiance is alright.
