"Gyu-Kaku is a Japanese BBQ restaurant in Midtown where you can grill your own meats and try a ton of different things for around $25-30 per person. We’d recommend making a reservation, because it gets packed with groups and families - especially during the daily Happy Hour, when all the food is discounted and there’s a giant two-person set meal option for $55. Also, know that there’s a good chance your clothes will smell like meat after you leave." - Hannah Albertine

Google
We had an amazing first experience! Tried this place for the first time to celebrate my daughter’s birthday, and everything exceeded our expectations. The food was absolutely delicious, and the service was top-notch—special thanks to Eduardo for taking such great care of us. He was attentive, friendly, and really made the evening feel special. We’ll definitely be coming back again! We ordered the Yakiniku.

Our server, Raisa, was absolutely fantastic! From the moment we sat down, she was attentive, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed for a wonderful Gyu-Kaku experience. Her recommendations were spot-on, and she navigated our grilling with ease. We'll definitely be back and hope to be seated in Raisa's section again!

Google
OTHER than the heat, I can't complain and still give it a 5 start review due in part to the great server Michael they have working! He not only went above and beyond, and the guy deserves a promotion! The way he takes his job seriously paying attention to every detail is amazing, and he was always attentive to everything.Compared to my first visit here, Michael made a great impression. If you ever pay this place, a visit ask for him to be your waiter! The food was great as well so everything was amazing

We had the pleasure of dining in with waiter Franklin, and the service was EXCEPTIONAL. We were met with a smile throughout our entire meal and he was super attentive. My family had a great time (my first time eating at a Japanese Grill) and I will highly recommend coming to this location but ask for FRANKLIN. Congratulations to your management team for having such an amazing employee. Thanks again! :)

Yelp
We had made a reservation beforehand and we're accommodated almost immediately after we arrived. We were able to order off of the lunch menu and got the 2 meat combo and then 3 meat combo. Each combo came with a salad, rice bowl, and miso soup. The flavor for all of the meats were super yummy, especially the yaki shabu which has been my #1 pick for years. Dipping the meats into the various sauces that they provide makes the flavor stand out even more. The rice is cooked nicely and the salad is delicious. The miso soup was okay, nothing amazing. The service was super quick and I liked the ambiance and decor. I felt comfortable and cozy, making the experience even better. Overall, incredibly pleasant experience and will come back!

Yelp
I had high expectations for this spot due to the prices of their AYCE. There are three tiers. Premium ($46), Ultimate ($56) & Supreme ($66). I decided to just get the Premium & I'm glad I did because the quality didn't match the price point. Our server Caleb did his best & was accommodating. The first grill didn't work at all so we had to move to another table. The second grill was weak but it got the job done. Luckily the cuts were thin so it didn't take much heat to cook it. I started out with the miso soup and I thought it was just okay. Not much flavor on the broth but it did come out scorching hot. For the meats we ordered the Yaki-Shabu Beef, Garlic Shrimp, Umakara Yaki Beef, Bistro Hanger Steak. The Yaki-Shabu beef and hanger steak had decent flavor but wasn't that tendered. The Umakara Yaki beef had no flavor but it was tendered and not chewy. The garlic shrimp had a mild garlic flavor. The shrimp did taste fresh and I cooked it to my liking, which had a bouncy consistency. For dessert I ordered the green tea ice cream. It was decent. It came out frozen like it's been in the freezer for months, but once it melted it actually tasted very good. Overall, the service was good but the food was beyond mid. The portion size for each plates are pretty small which isn't a good thing especially if the place was busy. I say that because considering it was dead the service was a little slow. I can't imagine how long we'll be waiting for our meats if it was busy. For 46 bucks I definitely did not get my moneys worth. I would have been better off going to Handam. Will I come back? Nah. You were very nice though Caleb, so good effort.

Yelp
For the record, I'm not a beef lover. While I was looking at the menu, I felt so bad for paying so much money for things that I wouldn't even eat. I was wrong though- everything turned out well and I walked out happily and did not regret it. The food was good- everything non-beef was good! I loved the avocado salad, the fried dumplings, veggie spring rolls, cold tofu, the bibimbap, Shrimp ahijo, to name a few. I did try some of the beef items, like beef tongue and kalbi. Well, the kalbi was okay, but the beef tongue was hard and chewy. The beef nigiri sushi wasn't to my liking either- that slice of beef was so thick and tough and completely overcooked. To me, the best part of the meal was the All-you-can-eat mochi ice cream- the purple sweet potato flavor was the best! Matcha ice cream was delicious too, but the vanilla ice cream tasted a little strange like some sort of expired milk powder- yes, it was kinda gross. LOL. Last but not least, the s'mores making at the end of the meal that my girls waited the whole entire day for was so much fun!

Emy A.

Yelp
We went here for Houston Restaurant Weeks. We found out that "Guy-Kaku" means "horn of the bull". We ordered almost all the menu items. We grilled the spinach and broccoli in the foil. We grilled the zucchini, shishito peppers, and meats. We also had ice cream. We had more than enough food and we're stuffed by the time we were done. The staff was friendly and explained to us how things work. We will definitely come back again.

Kristin J.

Yelp
This place was absolutely incredible. Highly recommend! 10/10 The only thing is I wish we were able to take leftovers home, but I do understand the all you can eat deal for 45 dollars should be limited to the food you order in the restaurant and is expected to be finished without leftovers

Ernesto G.

Yelp
Brittany was an amazing server. She was very attentive, sweet and her style was fleek. Her piercings were very exquisite.

Ara A.

Yelp
Always have a solid time here. Meat? Good. Staff? Good. Smores? Good. What more could you want from a bbq spot?? It can get pretty busy on the weekends but never had too long of a wait. One time they did leave a back table where a large group was totally covered in plates and trash for a while. It was just weird because that table was right by the bathrooms so it's hard to miss walking past. Regardless, I love our neighborhood Gyu-kaku!

Alex A.

Yelp
Amazing service and vary attentive 10/10 will come back food is delicious Britnie was amazing and vary nice and energetic 10/10 she was amazing and enriched my experience here

Mariah M.

Yelp
This place was packed! But we got a seat relatively quickly. It is definitely a family style restaurant but you have to be careful with your kids cause the grill is hot and does spit flames a little. We tried the value meal for 2 and it was more than enough for the both of us. The waiter was very attentive and friendly, in addition to everyone that worked there. It was definitely a pleasant experience. The meat was marinated really well and they provide instructions on how to cook everything. There are tons of vents above the tables so it wasn't as smoky as other restaurants I've been to with a similar concept. We definitely plan to come again and I would recommend it for a casual date or family night out!

Laura S.

Yelp
Kaitlyn was an awesome server and thoroughly explained the various menus! The food selection she recommended were delicious.

Calvin D.

Yelp
Raisa was my server and she did great! Was very attentive and super sweet. Everything I ordered tasted great. Love their beef sukiyaki rice (must order). I will definitely be coming back bc of the great service. I usually do AYCE but opted for a la carte this time and still got really full after

Mark D.

Yelp
food and service was great! if you go here sit with Franklin and he will take great care of you!

Jasmine T.

Yelp
My family and I love coming here for birthdays and celebrations! They can accommodate large parties of 10-15 and their service always remains on point! Food is always delicious here and we found that my family prefers Japanese barbecue over Korean. There's just something about the different cuts of meat and flavors that just always hits the spot!

Chef T.

Yelp
Delicious food! Every meat we ordered was tender and fresh, the black pepper chicken wings were slightly sweet and peppery and I would definitely return for this! Mushroom medley for the grill was equally delicious. We ordered a la carte for 3 and were mightily full still. Would definitely return. Alex, our server was super nice. The s'mores were really fun!

Abby K.

Yelp
I love the taste of the food here but don't recommend it for take out. My husband says this is the place where you cook your own food, lol. But it's tasty.

Sophanny S.

Yelp
We had a great experience here. Raisa was our server and she did a great job explaining to us all the options and what she thought would be best. I appreciated her knowledge and her friendliness as we were unsure about what options to take. Her suggestions were on point and she was attentive to our table and needs. I recommend coming here for a family or date night. Everything was delicious.

Bradford G.

Yelp
TLDR: Not a bad option for an AYCE J Bbq in Sugar Land. A bit on the pricey side, but the selection and quality is on par with other establishments such that if you're looking to go all out on the meats, it could be well worth it. Visit: Weekday (dinner) Order: Premium AYCE menu- 8.1/10 There's price, then there's value... if you eat enough, you might just find this to be a bargain. Otherwise, the a la carte route might be the way to go. We're lucky enough in Htown to have a plethora of options in this category. While some places may offer better quality and service, I found Gyu-Kaku to fall smack dab into the middle of the pack. With their loyalty program, you can find some good deals and for signing up you'll get a $10 off discount for the next visit. Not bad!

Michelle V.

Yelp
Alex was a great server! The food was delicious and he was so helpful with all our questions! The food was on point and the lunch specials are a steal! Everything was super clean and felt really cozy.

Matthew T.

Yelp
Lucia was amazing thanks for making my friends birthday a special night! Food was quick and delicious

Michaela J.

Yelp
Gyu-Kaku never disappoints, and their meat quality is premium for sure. before getting straight into the meats, you get a few starters; my fave is the flavorful salad, and japanese chicken karaage. i am not too much a fan of the "sushi" (it's just rice with a piece of meat on top) but that didn't take away from my meal or experience. this time we ordered the "meat lovers" bbq course and i was completely satisfied. very full in the end but make room for the s'mores! there are a few locations around town but sugarland is my favorite.

Diana N.

Yelp
Visited on a Monday for HRW (actually came twice for it)! Lunch was $25 per person, and we felt like it was a good deal. We shared the HRW menu (4 courses) and a beef sukiyaki bibimbap bowl ($8 during HH, totally worth it bc the portion is large!), and we were full. (Took some bibimbap to-go, too.) The HRW menu comes with - Miso soup, salad, & rice - I like their salad. We were able to share these. FRIED PORK GYOZA DUMPLING - good dumplings (better than the frozen ones lol). Good dipping sauce. BBQ SET A YAKI-SHABU BEEF* (GF) & TORO BEEF* (GF) Yaki-Shabu is our most popular thinly sliced beef that grills quickly and marinated in our signature Miso sauce. Toro Beef is thin & fatty beef belly marinated in Sweet Soy sauce. Good flavor. Pretty tender. SHISHITO PEPPERS (V) Shishito peppers are drizzled over with soy sauce and sprinkled sesame. The 2nd time, they were out of the peppers, so we got the garlic butter mushrooms, which were also very good. S'MORE 1 PC Good - your typical smore.

Yelp
I haven't been here in a while in several years. I used to go here for their lunch specials because it's such a great bang for your buck. However, I came here for dinner on a Saturday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. I haven't gotten a chance to try their AYCE menu ever since they started doing it. I was VERY impressed. I think it's such a great deal for how many options you get for it! We got the Premium one too. I think doing AYCE is the best and easiest way to go when you're coming here with a large group. The quality of the meat was so delicious and they did an amazing job marinating them. These were my favorite items to order: -half gyu-kaku salad (the dressing is AMAZING) -toro beef -yaki-shabu beef -bistro hanger steak Loved that this also came with dessert: ice cream (vanilla/green tea) and s'mores. Extra items that we ordered that weren't on the premium list that I loved were: -garlic noodle with chicken -spicy tuna volcano Our service was fantastic as well. I believe our server's name was Lucia. She was great! She was very attentive and good at refilling our drinks and taking our orders as we needed them. I would absolutely love to come back here again!

Aileen M.

Yelp
We come here sometimes when we want something different from your usual bbq and as always their food is yummy. I'd say the only con was the food coming in late this time, kind of off putting when you're in a 90min time limit in an all you can eat. However, I can understand that they seem particularly back up with all the tickets, I just hoped they still gave us some food plates one by one at least. Instead of waiting for the whole order. Our server was patient and friendly to give us what he could with the situation. Anyways, the ambiance is great, dim lighting for a perfect date night but lots of family come by with their kids.

Melvin L.

Yelp
Great food . Great Service . Thy gave great recommendations . Ordered a lot ... Ate a lot ! Leche Mojito was And Raisa was great

Juliana C.

Yelp
Highly recommend making a reservation, although it was not busy at the time my boyfriend and I arrived the staff at Gyu-Kaku Sugar Land had our table set up. Our server, Aisha, was very attentive. She ensured we had everything we needed and that the food was up to par. Aisha made sure that our grill was changed out often. We ordered the meat lover for two and it was plenty of food for two. The meats were seasoned perfectly. Thank you Aisha!

Wayne G.

Yelp
We visited this Japanese BBQ to check out the Restaurant week menu. The dinner offer had lots of options and almost everything was delicious! It took some skill to cook, eat and talk at the same time, but by the end of the meal we had new skills and full stomach's! Lucia was a delightful server and was always right there when we had questions or needed help. Thanks!

Tracy D.

Yelp
Easy to find, and if no more parking there's actually roof top parking in the back. Plenty of tables inside, and it's a family friendly place. 3 meats for $16 (comes with bowl or rice, soup, salads) you grill the meat yourself. Overall good bbq place that you can order small portion.

John H.

Yelp
Rule about seating only when all the party is here is ridiculous. We were ready to order for everyone that were on their way! Not very accommodating. Corporate needs to revisit that rule. 2 person or four has the same table. Should have said just two people in the party and the rest would join later.

Tommy S.

Yelp
Best server ever!! We appreciate your time and patience in serving us. The food was excellent and the food was great. Thank you Lucia! The best person I know in my life!

Paula A.

Yelp
Raisa was wonderful. Great service!!! Food was very tasty! Met a friend here for lunch & we had a very nice time.

Thompson J.

Yelp
Went for birthday dinner. The staff are great. Lucia was a very sweet and attentive. Would come back again

Millie M.

Yelp
So enjoyed the spicy cabbage, garlic fried rice and the Kobe style beef! Lucia is the best server!

Shana H.

Yelp
If you're even considering this place, just go! Definitely worth it. I came here on a Sunday night and it was pretty busy but we were seated within 5 mins. Everyone was very friendly. I'm still shocked at the amount of food - and it was all delicious. We got the fried cheese wontons and while this was a first for me, they were good! And the Japanese chicken kangan. We didn't have to grill those ourselves, lol, but sooo good. Also got a bowl of soup (only thing I didn't like!), rice with beef, and several different cuts of beef, as we ordered the meat lovers. The edamame was also really good. Side salad was also good. Our server came and checked on us several times and always told us how long each cut it beef would need to be cooked on each side - very helpful. We even had our grill changed halfway through too. I got a mango mai tai and my friend got a coco mo. Both were perfect. At the end, we got 2 s'mores which was a nice ending to an amazing dinner. I can't wait to go back!

Don C.

Yelp
Well again. And I know places need staff. App for reservations never seems to work except days in advance. Doesn't matter because you can have a reservation and there are never enough servers. Always "we have big parties". Seat us!! Train the hostess to open a beer or operate the sake machine. This place is 50/50 at best for us leaving. So drive over to Nirmanz, indian I know but walk in order and served all before we would have been seated

Tom R.

Yelp
The food was excellent! Everything was fresh and was Just the right amount, and we had more than enough opportunity to order more food. William was one of the best servers I've ever had in a restaurant! He was very pleasant and helpful and he took excellent care of us.

Cindy B.

Yelp
First time coming here , an amazing experience , food was delicious, service was super nice , amount of size of food was good, the place needs a small amount work meaning they should also focus on cleaning the restrooms , nice looking place,

Alison A.

Yelp
Delicious as always. Ambiance is perfect... soft background music with the soft lull of conversations. Guillermo was the absolute BEST server bringing us tray after tray of food. He was accommodating and personable. A hard worker. AWESOME!

Holly H.

Yelp
A very nice experience overall. I would recommend making a reservation so you don't have to wait. I didn't have a reservation so I waited about 10 minutes which isn't bad for a Saturday night. The food was very good as was the service. The yakishabu beef practically melts in your mouth. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here and will be back again.

Hayden M.

Yelp
I had a great experience at this restaurant in Willowbrook a few weeks ago so I decided to take my family to their location right here in my hometown of Sugar Land. It was a very bad experience. We were told by the server when we got there at 5:30 that the kitchen was backed up. Obviously a bad sign. The server did her best but food service was bad. Then we were told the AC was not working. Mind you we have a grill right on our table adding to the non working AC. You're given 90 minutes to eat. We left at 7 still not receding all of our food. The servers did their best but there seemed to be no manager in sight. If they get their act together this could be a good place but as of now I wouldn't be back.

Marie F.

Yelp
Great Mother's Day special with lots of meat options, especially premium beef! Kimchi and fried potstickers were also delicious with strawberry s'mores as a nice touch at the end. My son enjoyed roasting the marshmallows over the open grill. Our server (Caleb?) was attentive and explained the menu well. Nice, clean environment/ambiance. Will return.

Christopher V.

Yelp
Food was pretty good. The all you can eat sets were confusing, the higher the price the less attractive the offering. We found that ordering ala carte was cheaper than going with any of the all you can eat variants. They insisted on telling us a recommended cooking time for each dish as if we had never barbecued before. That was a little annoying.

Quiana G.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant!!! Food and service was amazing and the whole staff pitched in to make sure our experience was amazing. Extremely fun date idea!!! Also the lychee mojito with gin is so yum!!!

Paul M.

Yelp
We love Korean BBQ and decided to give Japanese BBQ a try and really enjoyed it. We came at 4pm but still qualified for their lunch special. We each picked 3 proteins and had salad, miso soup, and garlic rice. It was plenty of food and only cost $50 total for the two of us. We will be back!

Logan C.

Yelp
This place was great. I did have a problem with the miso soup because there was way too many scallions. On the other hand the fillet mignon was great but I would recommend a little salt, pepper, and garlic butter on it but that's just me. I did also get the Takayuki with ice cream and it was okay. I wasn't a fan of the red beans inside the Takayuki. The service was great and the employees were attentive. The cleanliness was on point I didn't see any grime on the tables and I didn't see any bugs. The quality of the food was very satisfying and mouthwatering. Overall I would recommend coming to this place.

Alisia C.

Yelp
Eat here if you want a side of e-coli with your lunch! We brought the kids for lunch, and thought it would be a 'special treat'. However, what we got was mediocre food and non-existant service. The floors, restrooms and kitchen were disgustingly dirty. Our waiter only brought half our order, then disappeared. We had to ask 3 different waiters for cutlery, which never came!! I will never ever ever eat here again.

Alexandra B.

Yelp
Food was great! Cody was really nice and helped us out with how to cook everything, very attentive. Wasn't rushed and had a wonderful time!

Michael B.

Yelp
THY was amazing Very helpful Bubbly attitude Kept everything coming to the table like clockwork Food was great Only wish they had a couch to take a nap before leaving Second time coming here and will be returning when my stomach gets more room Again THY was awesome and I hope all the other servers are just as amazing as she is. Better yet make THY the trainer

Claudine L.

Yelp
This is me and my husbands go to spot as of 2020. Since COVID 19 Gyu-Kaku has been one of the few places thats has met our social distancing needs to a T. They make you wait in your vehicle if it's not time for you to be seated, they check temperatures at the door, provide hand sanitizer, and all employees wear masks and gloves. The food is always great no matter if it's happy hour or regular price, it's always good quality food. Our server gave us recommendations on drinks which was also nice. On this particular visit I actually remembered to take pictures. We got the chef's special which came with a whole lot of stuff but to name a few it had the Garlic Shrimp,Gyu-kaku salad, miso soup, kimchi, pork belly, broccoli and cheese, and different cuts of steak. Everything was seasoned well. I love this place and we will continue to enjoy it in 2021.

Brittney T.

Yelp
It's been years since I've been to a Gyu Kaku. We came in on an early Saturday evening before dinner rush. We did the premium ayce menu. The service was super slow. For all the staff that was walking around, it was crazy how long everything took to get to us. I guess I might be spoiled from the service i get from kbbq ayce places where the waiters are lightning fast. I did give benefit of the doubt because we had an older waitress and it felt like she was servicing a huge section by herself. The food was just OK to me - the meat was good, but some tasted a little salty. I usually prefer meat to not be marinated/seasoned though. Quality was there - but there wasn't anything that real stood out for me. Overall, it was an OK experience for us.
