Definition of sushi grade is high quality fish, and Hane has it! Everything we ordered exceeded expectations. Even the Toro, which we had before at other sushi restaurants, tasted superior than other places, perfect temperature, buttery texture that seemed to smoothly melt on the palette with hardly any chewing effort. Ordered a few oysters, they tasted fresh and flavorful, beautifully presented.
We also ordered a cold sake, which was served in a mini ice container with modern esthetic shot glasses. Not a lot of places bring your sake on ice, but it's the little things that make a place standout and make a memorable experience. They also have a full bar, I ordered a lemon drop towards the end because I saw the table next to us order one after another, and it was perfect as a pallet cleanser and great for the hot summer San Diego weather.
Service was excellent, the staff was on point, polite, and helpful with recommendations.
The vibe seemed to be on the business casual side, tables maybe a little too close to each other, perfect for someone who likes to be chatty and make new friends on the spot. Maybe not ideal for someone who is trying to have a quiet intimate date, unless it's your first date and you're trying to prevent any quiet awkward moments, then you can definitely buffer that by making casual conversation with the neighboring table.
As for prices, it was on the higher side, but it definitely matched the quality.
The only suggestion I would have for Hane is to provide a complimentary palette cleanser at the end, such as a mini sorbet. Some high end places have this little treat for guests, some even served in a shot glass, and makes a nice little touch to end a dinning experience and provides satisfaction to a guest that their money was well spent.
I would overall considered Hane to be a well balanced establishment in terms of food, quality, and service. I would definitely come back and even suggest it to friends visiting from out of town.
