"There was a time not so long ago when it was nearly impossible to find a high-quality meal in the same vicinity of Madison Square Garden/Penn Station that wasn’t Keen’s or a slice of Famiglia Pizza. When there were no cool hotels around, and the area between Herald Square and Flatiron didn’t matter enough to have its own identity. These days, the “NoMad” is actually a hot area to live, work, vacation, and, believe it or not, eat in. Hanjan was one of the first new guys to move into the now well-populated restaurant row on 26th Street. We’re big fans of Chef Hooni Kim, who executes Korean fare in a modern style in an environment that’s fun and welcoming. He’s essentially David Chang without the pork buns and the fanfare. Hanjan picks up right where Kim’s other restaurant, Danji, left off. His food is absolutely delicious, and every time we return to Hanjan, which is often, it seems to get better and better. The salmon sashimi is one of our favorite raw fish dishes in NYC. Both the Spicy Rice Cake with Pork Fat and Kimchi and the Beef Brisket Fried Rice are automatic orders, and don’t sleep on the late night Korean ramen. When it first opened, Hanjan was a solid new addition for the locals to frequent in an up-and-coming neighborhood. With time, it has grown into a fantastic restaurant, worth a trip on its own merit. If you love the food at restaurants like Momofuku Ssäm Bar, you’ll be thrilled to discover Hanjan. Food Rundown Homemade Cold Tofu A light and refreshing way to start you meal. The tofu at Hanjan is creamy and perfect. Do it. Atlantic Salmon Sashimi Pretty much the perfect salmon dish. Raw salmon over lettuce with radishes, salmon roe, and a spicy gochujang vinaigrette. Trust us, you will love everything about this. “Fresh Killed” Chicken Skewers These chicken skewers are a necessary part of the Hanjan meal experience. Nope, they’re not killing chickens in the back, thankfully, but yes, their chicken is just as fresh as it gets. They’ve got wings, thighs, gizzards, breasts... you name it. If it’s part of a chicken, it’s on a skewer and should wind up in your belly. Spicy Ricecake With Pork Fat Spicy rice cakes that absolutely must be on your table. They are gummy and soft and dreamy. This batch of pig and cake rivals those at Momofuku Ssäm. They’re in the same league, which is saying a lot, because Ssäm’s may be the best ever. Spicy Squid Stir Fry With Organic Somyun Noodles We’re not entirely sure exactly what is going on in this heavenly bowl of noodles and squid, but it’s glorious. Don’t ask questions, just enjoy. Spicy BBQ Pork Belly With Ssäm Set A ridiculously tender spicy BBQ pork dinner that will make you very, very happy. Don’t be scared. Kimchi & Beef Brisket Fried Rice With Egg AKA Hooni Kim’s bibimbap. So good. So satisfying. It’s a home run and an absolute must. “Fresh Killed” Grilled Chicken Wings These are not life-changing chicken wings, but they get the job done nicely. The soy-sake marinade they are bathed in gets an A+. Korean Spicy Ramyun Their Korean take on ramen is only available after 9pm, so have a late-ish dinner, or start early, and just order ramen for dessert. However you play it, just make sure this is part of your Hanjan experience. The combination of pork, chicken, and fish bones is a flavor-packed bowl of ramen with thick noodles and broth with a slight kick." - Andrew Steinthal

"Hanjan, the sequel to chef Hooni Kim’s Danji, has closed after eight years on West 26th Street in the Flatiron District. It continues serving meal kits from Danji." - Eater Staff

Had a prix-fixe menu on a recent visit with a large group; the kitchen presented the dishes family-style, with ample helpings for all. The dishes were bright, pleasantly spicy, and full of freshness. The restaurant cheerfully accommodates large groups, and did make substitutions for two diners in our party with shellfish allergies. The noise reached a level that made conversation difficult except with one’s immediate neighbor.

I came by myself on a Saturday evening when I was in the area and I enjoyed a really great meal. Other than bi bim bap, I am not very familiar with Korean food and I was interested in trying new food. The waiter was fantastic and suggested I order the cod roe appetizer and black bean noodle dish for an authentic dinner. Looking at the menu, these are two dishes I never would have thought to order so I appreciated the suggestion and did indeed love both. The only reason I might not order them again is because they were so good, now I want to try more!!! I also ordered a cocktail, the Rabbits Foot, which was interesting. It is made with Tōkki Black soju, which was described to me as a rice vodka though it reminded me more of tequila than vodka. The waiter treated me to a small glass of traditional rice wine too which was incredibly nice and generous. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Hanjan and look forward to returning.

Fantastic Korean food - the food was great, friendly service, and a great atmosphere! My least favourite food was the garlic fried chicken. The jajangmyeon was fantastic and it's a MUST order. If it's in season don't miss out on the soft shell crab! I would love to come back and if you haven't been to Hanjan reserve you spot now.

Came here for lunch today and the food was pretty good, I had a vegetarian Bibimbap lunch set with a club soda. Honestly for $26 the service and quality don’t really reach the 5 star for me. the setting and decor are nice and the selection they have available at the bar are nice as well.

Food was delicious. The bartender was attentive and helpful. That being said, everything I ordered had rice, which made the meal super filling. I’d preferred to sample different things and still had room for dessert. Also, the black cod dish, while super delicious, there was more daikon on my plate than the fish. Slightly disappointed on the portion, but that’s minor.

Atmosphere was great at Hanjan. Food was okay but a bit overpriced. And service was rushed. We haven’t even finished our appetizers and our main courses were brought out - and we could barely fit all dishes on the table and had to eat awkwardly with a hot bowls in front of us. I got the fresh black bean noodles and it was too oily and a bit heavy. The chicken wings were good. The bibimbap was a bit bland.

Loved this place! The sope is beautiful, almost a hidden gem tucked away from the busy city outside. Ate here for lunch with my bf whose never had good Korean food, and we both loved everything. Started with the Chicken Katsu, which was a perfectly fried chicken cutlet that wasn't greasy or over battered. The caramelized onion dipping sauce and the cabbage salad really rounded it out giving it richness and a fresh crunch.for entrees I had the Bulgogi Beef Bibimbap, which was perfectly prepared in a large bowl with fresh vegetables, beef, and a soft cooked egg. Finished with a healthy heaping of their house made Gochujang and I was in heaven. My bf had their Ssam-bap (think thai lettuce wraps) set with spicy pork and really enjoyed it. So glad we found this place and look forward to may return meals here.

One of my favorites! Authentic Korean food with a creative spin and some flair too it, artfully and deliciously done. Hooni Kim is brilliant. In summer, nothing beats the Naengmyun (chilled noodles)! The grilled wings and garlic fried chicken are also fantastic, and the cocktails. Make a reservation! Or go for happy hour 4-7 and sit at the bar for a bites menu and 1/3 off drinks.
