Yelp
First and foremost: CASH ONLY! You've been told.
Secondly, you grab a menu, sit down somewhere, fill out your order (including prices) and give it to the person at the counter. It's different than most places, but not complicated.
The atmosphere isn't great: it feels like a cafe that hasn't aged well since the 1990s. Bluntly, it's run down and a it's working-class holdout from less yuppie-filled times. Not that they should remodel and I hope that they don't, but don't go here for the nice tables and lovely napkins. You'll probably sit at a wobbly table or a ripped booth, like it or not. Believe it or not, the cleanliness has actually improved through the years and it feels much less dirty than it was prior to when smoking was allowed. I usually like the eclectic music that they're playing. But ambiance only counts for so much.
People there are sometimes grumpy, sometimes indifferent and sometimes nice. Such is life.
The real reason that you're here is for the food (or because it's the only place open), whether it's falafel, a burrito, breakfast, or my favorite, the mock duck banh mi sandwich, a sandwich so big and good that you have to eat half of it with a fork first. Expect a pile of blue tortilla chips if you're getting a sandwich. I don't think I've had bad or even mediocre food here in about 15 years. Some things can be made plant-based (aka vegan), if you'd like. They'll yell your name when it's ready, so listen up or move closer if you're hard of hearing like me.
Prices are good for what you get. Portions are generous and are made to satisfy. Get a dessert if you're still hungry or get one to go if you're not.
Also, they're open 6am-4am usually (which is a plus), except for holidays (such as May Day) or random days that they might consider a holiday.
Summary:

Overall: 4+ stars
