The Best Late-Night Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Hard Times, the Cities’ resident punk-rock, worker-owned, vegetarian restaurant, is open from 8 a.m. to midnight daily. Falafel platters, chicken fried tofu, and veggie burgers abound — but the best part is that Hard Times serves its breakfast menu all day. It’s cash-only." - Eli Radtke

The Best Breakfast Restaurants in Minneapolis and St. Paul | Eater Twin Cities

"Since 1992, this punk cafe — known for its hand-painted, bright green façade on Riverside Avenue — has been a classic haunt for vegan and vegetarian bites. Breakfast classics include the vegan helter-skelter with hash browns and tofu, vegan biscuits with mushroom gravy, and the vegan “big fat pancake” with maple syrup. This restaurant shouldn’t be confused with a separate Texas chain." - Stacy Brooks

Google
All vegan menu (they have vegetarian sausage). Food was very good. Coffee was good. Service was very friendly but can be a tad slow. FYI: Cash only (they have an ATM there) You order at the counter, so no table service. You bus your utensils when you're done. Coffee refills are not free. Watch your step when walking in/out of the entrance!

Google
Rad vegetarian and vegan spot with loads of character! We ordered dinner and started eating our delicious vegan baked🍪goods while we waited. We ordered a Ruhben and Philly both Vegan. Both sandwiches were outstanding!!! We will definitely be back. Thanks for being totally groovy Hard Times Cafe🙏💚

Google
WOW. GREAT. I was visiting from out of town and had a list of vegan spots to check out in Minneapolis. I went for a late breakfast here and got their vegan breakfast sandwich and a muddy water. It was SO GOOD. Perfectly seasoned, tastes were well thought out. It was so good I ended up there again a few days later. I ordered a LOT of food - I wanted to try all the items on the menu that called to me and I wanted leftovers to carry me through the next day. Everything was so great. Truly, this food is full of flavor. The staff are really nice. It's hard to pick a favorite, but the Korean bun was probably the most unique and flavor filled. Their house made vegan burger patties are excellent (it's always nice to see a vegan burger that isn't the impossible/beyond or bean burger). The space itself fits the vibe they have. I had a great time both times I went. No other vegan place in Minneapolis even came close to Hard Times Cafe.

Google
Great coffee to go with my breakfast. I had the vegetarian biscuit and gravy with an Arabica coffee. The coffee had strong notes of honey and cinnamon. I also tried the Méil which was had similar flavor combinations. Cool edgy vibe inside. Note that it is cash only and everyone should order on a piece of paper at the counter.

Google
A highly recommended place to visit in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Cash only with an ATM inside. Write down your order on a piece of paper, pick up your plates when it's ready, then place in the respective bins when you're done. Very quick and friendly service. Great breakfast and lunch menu for vegetarians. If you're looking for meat, you'll be out of luck here. Solid coffee menu at great values. I personally thought the food I've ordered was only ok, but others in my parties say they liked what they got. Quiet, rustic, and pleasant atmosphere for meeting with friends or doing work. Did get hassled by someone for money, but they were quickly dealt with by a worker.

Emily Feldkamp

Google
Awesome vibes, tons of vegan options. I would totally hang out here all the time if I lived in the area!! Service was quick on a weekday morning. The biscuits and gravy wasn't my favorite I've ever had but I would love to come back and try some more stuff! Cash only but they have an ATM in the front.

Google
Cash only. The food is delicious and the staff are very nice too. For $20 you can get a generous portion of vegan hot food, a drink and a dessert.

Google
Cool hole in the wall joint. Grungy, hip, relaxed, yet anxious. This is the place that the hairy pitted chicks can let their freak flags fly. Good coffee. Great coffee even. All vegan menu I believe. Service was good, I even got a sample of the soup of the day which was very good pozole. I liked it and you will too! Cash only by the way.

Yelp
This restaurant is vegetarian and vegan with gluten free options. They have classic diner cups of coffee with $1 refills. The cafe has a grunge dive feel- many tables that allow for one to sit awhile and read or play games. Cash only for payment! They have metered street parking for $1.00 an hour or a parking lot that is $3 for 2 hours when you cannot find metered parking. The service is fast. I wish they had gluten free bakery options though. They offer tofu if you do not want eggs and corn tortillas to replace bread for a GF option.

Yelp
**Avoid This Place - Not Worth the Visit** If you're on Yelp looking for a good place to eat, do yourself a favor and skip this spot. Trust me, you're better off choosing the other option. Here's why this place gets a thumbs down: **1. Food Quality - A Letdown** The food here is disappointing at best. They offer a lot of vegan options, but none of them hit the mark. My vegan Philly cheesesteak was dry and bland--no seasoning whatsoever, and it was practically crying out for some salt. Someone else in our group got the non-vegan breakfast plate, and it was the same story--bland, no flavor, and not a hint of seasoning. My girlfriend ordered the vegan Reuben and they actually served it with REAL cheese! How do you mess that up on a vegan sandwich? To his credit, the cook admitted his mistake, but that doesn't fix the fact that the food was mediocre at best. **2. Atmosphere - Unpleasant** The vibe here is off. It's grungy in a way that just feels gross, not the cool kind of grunge. The music was terrible--literally sounded like nails on a chalkboard. It was so obnoxious we couldn't even focus on eating. The place is dirty, the bathroom door doesn't lock, and you'll probably trip over the entrance if you're not careful. **3. Weird, Annoying Rules** They make you write your order on a piece of paper and hand it to them, which is fine I guess, but they only accept cash. And then there's this weird thing where they want you to scrape your plate when you're done eating? Why? The whole experience just felt like a series of unnecessary, frustrating rules. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences I've had. It's no surprise the staff always seem miserable--working in a place like this would probably suck too. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else.

Yelp
VEGAN REVIEW I love that this place is so gritty & grungy! it reminds me of a 1990s college coffee house. the service is curt but efficient. had the reuben & a salad. very tasty. desserts looked great but I was just too full.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
I appreciate their low prices and their worker who do their best. The premise is you only pay in cash, write your order on a slip of paper, and they will make it immediately. Inside the Hard time cafe, I noticed that they have accommodating food choices. The pastries are vegan. The pankcakes I got one time was whole wheat. Personally that's not my favorite, so I didn't love the food or drinks I have gotten so far. But everything else about it is great. Places like this are for the people! Thank you for being open.

Yelp
Super hipster spot located in cedar riverside aims to serves those who are vegan or tempted to try with their cool menu items. They do a great job making regular meals and vegan ones to match. My friend and I stopped in for breakfast and we both ordered the Vegan Heuveus rancheros. The dish was tasty but didn't mesh well together. I felt like their were certain seasonings that could've been included to elevate the dish. I have tasted Heuveus rancheros before so I know it isn't hard to recreate. I felt like the prices were a little high as well which I'm not a fan of when it comes to vegan dishes. They shouldn't be priced with regular items because the ingredients are different. The service was subpar for sure. Get you in and out. One thing I did like were the pastries and food items you could grab to go. I would return to try those.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
Cash only! The food and pastries are amazing. Have loved them for years!! It's hardcore hipster vibes as you'd expect. Love it

Yelp
Went to Hard Times for the first time in awhile. The menu is fantastic, ranging from authentic Middle Eastern to vegan, veggie laden choices, burritos, salads as well as traditional diner fare, with the exception that the plates are meat-free, using meat alternatives, however eggs and cheese are served. Service: semi-self serve, with the customer writing their orders and picking up at a window. Staff are attentive, easygoing, friendly and accommodating beyond belief; when i ruined my food using the wrong condiment (syrup instead of shoyu), they remade my order cheerfully and without charge. Ambiance: laid back, semi-grunge, pleasant and not too loud. The cafe is run by a collective who all look like they're happy to be here.
google avatar

Ryann C.

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful!! When overwhelmed I can only do pros and cons Pros: great service, plenty of vegan delicious options, great service ( it matters so very much). They have community publications, they play punk music , they have vegan pastries, extensive menu, a clothing box. I'm visiting Minnesota and I will return back here while I'm visiting. Cons: they only take cash
google avatar

Jared M.

Yelp
The food here is great, everything tastes fresh. It's a cool spot to hangout or get some work done. They make their own chai concentrate here and as a chai aficionado I can vouch it's some of the best. I don't usually drink chai lattes as most places use boxed big brand overly sweetened chai juice but I can enjoy one here! The counter staff have been very friendly for the most part and some have gone above and beyond to help me out. Beware this place is cash only.
google avatar

Alli S.

Yelp
I LOVED this place. The food was delicious and the ambiance was impeccable. I loved that there was the same meal in both vegan/non vegan options! I would 100% recommend this place to anyone

Courtnie G.

Yelp
Good food and pastries. One of the best chai's here in twin cities (this and Uncommon ground have been my fav so far). Vibe is definitely something you should prepare for - cash only, dark grunge, environment first kinda place. Would recommend as a cool vegan spot :)

Yelp
I've been a vegetarian for going on 17 years and was one of my best vegan meals I've ever had, especially for the price point. I had the Seitan Gyro and I simply cannot recommend it highly enough. Everything was seasoned perfectly, the cut of the Seitan was superb and looked just like a lamb or beef gyro. The pita itself was soft and chewy and the sauce was perfect. I got a side of hummus and pita that was also amazing. My friend got the Reuben and really liked that as well. Atmosphere was very punk, fitting with the name. Service was pretty quick (very appreciated since we paid to park in one of the street parking spaces out front). Staff were friendly but not overly chatty (totally fine by me) SOME THINGS TO NOTE: When I went, it was cash only so be prepared for that. My meal ran around $15. You don't order at the counter. There is a stand with order slips near the menus on the wall. You fill out one slip per person and turn that in to the counter. I've read down and seen comments that this was confusing or unclear, but it seemed pretty intuitive to me. There are some steps leading into the building, but there's a button outside for folks who may have trouble with those.

Yelp
You aren't going to hard times for diner service, they make some delicious coffee, they have lots of tea and lots of food options and they are cheap. It's cash only. These days they have an atm in house and wifi. It's where you go for cheap but healthy and filling eats and strong ass coffee!

Annie H.

Yelp
My absolute favorite place to study! Huge portions, great vibes, good coffee & great service!

Kelley Q.

Yelp
I went here as a vegan along with vegetarians and a meat eater. We all thought it was great! I got the vegan biscuits and gravy and I believe it was the Philly- both ridiculously good. Plus the atmosphere is so nice. I'm obsessed! Oh, and before I left i bought a couple desserts. The vegan lime cookie was the best cookie I've ever consumed - vegan or not. I was literally in heaven!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is exactly what it needs to be. A solid spot for honest food in an honest place. We came in for brunch on a Friday afternoon. I appreciate the low key ordering system - write it down on a slip and submit! Cash only BTW!! They do have an ATM on site. We got a big vegan pancake to share, classic breakfast, vegan Helter skelter and coffees. The food is fair in price. It's so nice to not have to figure out what I can get that's dairy-free, really pretty much have everything in normal form and then in vegan option. The dining space is so chill and a bit crunchy grungey, very much a college student vibe-- UMN is across the street. I love the free pile box and the fact that they compost too!!

Willie E.

Yelp
Me an my friend eat here she complained on how dirty an unprofessional it looked and didn't even eat, I just ate the biscuits and gravy but I been back 3 times by myself food is great music is great an people where to

Wyatt L.

Yelp
A home away from home! I have spent so much time here over the years with friends. It's definitely a unique experience and not for everyone, but I love it.
google avatar

Tigra C.

Yelp
I just didn't love it. Hash browns were great. Scrambled tofu was good after I added salt, pepper, and hot sauce. The biscuit was soft and yummy. The gravy was thin and was a dinner gravy. Biscuits and gravy should come with a thick country or breakfast gravy. I really disliked their gravy. Sausage patty was decent; not bad, not outstanding or memorable in any way. The most disappointing was that pancake. Mine was overcooked so hard that I couldn't even cut it. Along with that $3 syrup *insert hard eye roll* this was a waste of my money. The Cherry Chocolate Chip muffins was excellent. I'm convinced they have mastered the vegan baked good, but not much else. But it could've just been an off day for the kitchen. Not saying I won't be back, but I won't go out of my way either.
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
The best place for nighttime coffee. Cash only but they have an ATM and they have good food and pastries. Good place to do work, to have a meal, or have a chill solo coffee. Good service and cool environment.
google avatar

Abby C.

Yelp
Just assholes honestly...I wrote my order on the back of the paper they gave you and they didn't make my plate because it was written on the wrong side. They make their customers feel like idiots for just making a mistake. Their system is confusing to begin with, so if you've never been there, be prepared to be treated like shit.
google avatar

Jim T.

Yelp
Vegan/Vegetarian restaurant that will appeal to meat eaters like myself. I had the Huevos Rancheros which was fantastic. The salsa is homemade and is the cherry on the sundae. Eggs had to be farm fresh as they were rich and flavorful. The pancakes were not to my liking. Probably because they were healthy instead of processed flour.

Michele B.

Yelp
The food was good. I had the hummus platter and the garden salad. Didn't care for the tahini garlic dressing it was bland but I asked for balsamic and it was good. Service was excellent. Ambiance is for those with an open mind. If not this place isn't for you.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
We absolutely LOVE Hard Times Café! Something for everyone in our family, especially the vegan, which is important, but also the picky eater and the keto eater too!! Their drink and baked goods are fantastic, their portions are HUGE, and the food is locally sourced where possible. Their hours are very accommodating, the local rotating art is cool, the prices are super reasonable. Bring cash, but if you forget (like we did today) there is an ATM.
google avatar

Philip J.

Yelp
This place has been my favorite since quarantine ended, I've brought my family and friends along for the ride and they are so excited for the food

Bruce M.

Yelp
The food is really good but the music is very harsh. Hard to enjoy lunch with someone screaming at you.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
This place is pretty cool I wish there was a little bit more images reflecting the meals but I ordered the brown rice and Korean barbecue veggies and it was just that but with the sauce on the side, Nothing really flashy or special about my meal I honestly could've made this at home but hey it was worth a try the service however was amazing and very delightful so for that reason they deserve a four-star next time I'll just have to do a little bit more investigation when it comes to ordering
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
Barbie prefers to get with me during those Hard Times than during Flaccid Times. Can you blame her. I never really love the food here but it's pretty tasty considering that it's vegan and hipster at the same time (often a depressing combination, but combining any type of food with the word hipster is usually disastrous). The clientele is really interesting and fun and exactly what you would expect from a very cool trendy hippie place with vegan food. You can meet some really interesting and outside-the-box people here. The reason why I give it a solid four stars instead of the three which the food probably warrants - and the prices warrant - is that it's open until 4 a.m. and there's not a huge amount of options at that time of night around here, so I'm very appreciative of that, and we'll probably come here many more times for that fact alone.
google avatar

Shannon L.

Yelp
Note: when we went it was CASH ONLY (they did have an atm on site) I brought my vegan friend there and we both loved it!! The food was amazing. Price was very reasonable. We didn't have mask, but they were very accommodating. Clean, unique experience with wonderful food! We will be back

p a.

Yelp
Surly service but the food delivers. One of the last cool vestiges of the West Bank. The coffee will turn your eyelids out.

Sonja S.

Yelp
Excellent vegan food at great prices. It's as advertised- a place that seems like it's on hard times for atmosphere, but that's part of the charm.
google avatar

Anila Y.

Yelp
I will never return here. I am sorry your "system" sucks and confuses your customers which in turn makes all your employees ornery, which in turn causes them to be rude (understatment) to paying customers. I came here on a Friday evening with some friends and their toddler. My friend separated her ticket from her hubby's but wrote down her toddler's order on her own ticket and got scolded for it. After you place your own order, you wait to hear your name get called. But they blast really loud music, and the place is crowded so it easy to miss your name. This is what happened to me, since we were seated next to the speakers. When I went to check I noticed my ticket was in the done pile. I got told "I yelled your name like 7 times." Me: "Sorry I didn't hear it" Her (in the rudest most defensive tone): I mean I have your food but its probably cold and sucks now. Seven times. I literally yelled your name 7 times! Me: Okay I get it! I didn't pay $10 to get a side of attitude and scolding with my mediocre Banh mi. To top it off, there was more confusion within our party because someone took one of our dishes accidentally so they had to remake it. If you're having to yell at every customer that comes in to your store for screwing up, it's probably your system thats messed up, not the paying customers. P.S. To the lady who felt it necessary to yell at me for not hearing her call my name: I was out to dinner with friends for the first time after witnessing an extremely traumatic event two days earlier. I hope you think about that next time you think yelling at a person you don't even know is acceptable behavior.

Yelp
A vegetarian cafe serving up tasty and affordable eats. Semi-self serve but cooked to order. Mark down your menu choices and hand the slip to the cashier, pick up your food at the counter once cooked, eat, and bus your dishes. I had the vegetarian biscuits and gravy, which was stick-to-your-ribs diner food done well. The gravy had a good consistency, plenty of mushrooms, and wasn't too salty. The biscuits were giant and both fluffy and hefty. The biscuits and gravy were topped with fresh tomatoes and green onions, providing a nice counterpoint to the richness of the meal. I left a satisfied customer - full belly and not too big a dent in my wallet. I really enjoyed the vibe here. Not a sparkly clean cafe, but a lived in space with subcultural appeal. It was great seeing all the high school age punk rock and indie kids file in to get their grub and hang out in a welcoming, all ages place. I would have loved a place like this in my neighborhood growing up. Come support this awesome local business serving up interesting and cheap eats for all types of folks!

Karen L.

Yelp
I literally got one step in the door before face planting on the floor. They have a sign saying, "watch your step," but then it's all on you. It's dark. The step just looks like a door jamb. A black floor with a silver stripe, no yellow, no red, nothing that anyone usually associates with a hazard. I'd be amazed to hear that I'm the only one that has fallen on the way in or out. I was considering it as a place to bring a group of people, but no way! The staff person just stood there and said, "we tried to warn you." Clearly not hard enough! Eat at your own risk.
google avatar

Maya S.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious vegan and vegetarian food. It's a eclectic hole in the wall that offers one of the largest vegan and vegetarian options I've seen! As you walk in there is the counter with juices, coffees, and pastries. Even some gluten free options. I got the gluten free peanut butter cookie was was super delicious. Once you walk up to the counter, you can grab a menu and chose where you would like to sit. They give you a cute sheet where you write your name, and what yuh want to eat. They are cash only but have an ATM if you do not have cash. You walk back up to the counter to drop off your order and the chef will clearly and enthusiastically yell your name when it is ready. I ordered the soy chai latte, gluten free peanut butter, and vegan helter skelter. The chai latte was delicious. The helter skelter was everything! Such a large portion with really delicious vegetables and pieces of fried tofu and hash browns. Will be back again!

Yelp
Agh--still trying to make up my mind about this place! I guess the fact that I'm still thinking about it means it deserves a 4 instead of 3, right? I work nearby on West Bank U of M so this place seemed like a good stop for a later breakfast before heading into work. My experience was an interesting one: I walked in and see the menu posted on the wall opposite the counter. You're supposed to apparently take a sheet of paper, write down what you want and the price (kinda wasteful of paper) --there are no pens so you better have your own--and then give it to the barista. I brought up my order and joked that I hoped I did it right, and the barista did not find that amusing. These guys looked intense--Hard Times is rightfully named, I guess? I didn't realize they're cash only (rather inconvenient these days), so had to go over to the bank a few buildings down and get cash to pay. Barista also did not find THIS funny. Service probably deserves a 2/5, but everything else kinda makes up for it. They had tons of vegan and vegetarian and gluten free options which I LOVED. Instead of bread, I was able to get corn tortillas as a side! Really impressive inclusive menu. I ordered a half order of the loaded hash browns dish (can't remember the fun name for it), and that was like $6. Iced Chai was around $2.50. Both didn't take long. Half order of my breakfast dish was HUGE--I took more than half home! I don't think they have to go boxes (heads up), but I had my own to use. The dish was delicious--was not expecting to see so many veggie colors and fresh food in a quirky cafe! It was hash browns topped with cheese and scrambled egg and tons of veggies: tomatoes, fresh broccoli, cauliflower, etc. So yummy! Needed a bit of seasoning, but that's what hot sauce is for, right? Chef was a bit crabby with people that didn't come pick up their food order right away. Again, service is kind of lacking here, but they kinda get away with it because it creates a certain kind of atmosphere. Like the Dicks Last Resort restaurants where the waiters are purposefully mean to you! Chai was on point. Delicious. I loved both my items, and would definitely come back again. They're open all the time, and breakfast is served all day.

Yelp
3.5/5 My husband and I were one of the dummies that ordered here not reading the signs that they are cash only... Thankfully a kind gentlemen behind us helped us afford our meals. I love the interior. The decorations and the cozy atmosphere is so lax and comforting. I would love to eat here again. Though we weren't wowed by our food, I love their mission and community

brigit s.

Yelp
This places has the most amazing black bean nachos (I had vegetarian style)! It is a great place to have a coffee and snack late at night.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
First and foremost: CASH ONLY! You've been told. Secondly, you grab a menu, sit down somewhere, fill out your order (including prices) and give it to the person at the counter. It's different than most places, but not complicated. The atmosphere isn't great: it feels like a cafe that hasn't aged well since the 1990s. Bluntly, it's run down and a it's working-class holdout from less yuppie-filled times. Not that they should remodel and I hope that they don't, but don't go here for the nice tables and lovely napkins. You'll probably sit at a wobbly table or a ripped booth, like it or not. Believe it or not, the cleanliness has actually improved through the years and it feels much less dirty than it was prior to when smoking was allowed. I usually like the eclectic music that they're playing. But ambiance only counts for so much. People there are sometimes grumpy, sometimes indifferent and sometimes nice. Such is life. The real reason that you're here is for the food (or because it's the only place open), whether it's falafel, a burrito, breakfast, or my favorite, the mock duck banh mi sandwich, a sandwich so big and good that you have to eat half of it with a fork first. Expect a pile of blue tortilla chips if you're getting a sandwich. I don't think I've had bad or even mediocre food here in about 15 years. Some things can be made plant-based (aka vegan), if you'd like. They'll yell your name when it's ready, so listen up or move closer if you're hard of hearing like me. Prices are good for what you get. Portions are generous and are made to satisfy. Get a dessert if you're still hungry or get one to go if you're not. Also, they're open 6am-4am usually (which is a plus), except for holidays (such as May Day) or random days that they might consider a holiday. Summary: Ambiance: 3 stars Food: 4.5 stars Consistency: 4 stars (not really a category, but what the heck!) Portions: 5 stars Overall: 4+ stars

Yelp
I was excited to try Hard Times Cafe after I found out about it being in a convenient location on the West Bank of UofM's campus. Even though it was cash only (and I never carry cash), I still wanted to try it out with so many recommendations I've gotten. It's important to know that this place is really different than what most people are normally used to - you write down your order exactly as it appears on the menu, both dish name and price. If you get this wrong, bad things happen. I've had a friend get kicked out for getting this wrong. After I ordered, which I did correctly, I waited by the counter since there wasn't much instruction on what to do for seating. Was it seat yourself? Was it wait to be seated? No idea. That's when the cook and clerk asked each other "what the #&*! are they waiting for?" which was extremely off-putting since I was standing right in front of them. I ended up seating myself and ate mediocre food. I paid $10 for a hummus plate which was disappointing. This was not a very clean place and customer service doesn't seem to be a priority for the employees. I won't be going back, and I recommend you don't either.

Yelp
You ever branch out from your typical restaurant bubble, walk in to some place new, and for whatever reason the employees and everyone else surrounding just expects you to understand the restaurant dynamic? Perhaps I'm not vegetarian or hipster enough to be dining here but the second I stepped foot into Hard Times, I felt like a fish out of water. I can totally get down with the casual 'seat yourself' and order at the counter kind of vibe but unless advertised as so, i'm not sure how you're supposed to know this right off the batt. I waltzed in after concluding a solid 3 hours of classes at the neighbouring university so perhaps my brain was jello but still, the overall dynamic of the restaurant wasn't exactly clear either. Risking looking like the village idiot, I went up to the man behind the counter and admitted that I had no idea what I was doing and asked for clarification. Do you seat yourself? Where do you order? Etc. He was polite and explained things to me but the man he had been conversing with on my side of the counter, looked at me like I had sprouted a third eye. I get it, it was probably a dumb question to ask but I don't really understand why I'm writing down my order on a slip of paper all to hand it back to you - to have you tell me my total. I'm not opposed to this being the way y'all do things but for a newbie, maybe consider publishing a "How to Hard Times for Dummies" book or something. I ordered the hummus platter which was fine, nothing really special but then again i'm not sure how you would exceed at vegetables/hummus/and pita. For $10, it's fair. As a vegetarian, I really appreciate not having to stress about ordering veggie-friendly options. Overall, I think it's awesome they're vegetarian/vegan friendly but the initial interaction I had left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Hopeful the next time I try it out I can increase the number of stars I give it because I really want to like this place.

Yelp
Man, I'd forgotten how great this place is. I especially recommend the buttermilk biscuits with mushroom gravy, every single soup, and the rare baked good that isn't vegan (no hate, I just don't like baked goods made with vegetable oil).

Yelp
If you can get past the order taker who is gruff and unwelcoming, the rest of the experience will be well worth it. Lots of vegan options. Too many to choose from but that's a good problem to have. Of course we got the biscuits and gravy and the vegan helter skelter. Both super fresh and flavorful. Their vegan muffins are gigantic and very flavorful. The ambiance is nice and relaxing. I will definitely be back. Maybe with a snickers bar for the order taker

Yelp
I'll have to be honest I expected this place from the pictures to be kinda run down...so I had no problem with that.... I'll say this much I got the Vegan Helter Skelter and it was good stuff! I love their hash browns as well.... The employee at the front Cash Register was nice enough...told me how to order I filled out the form...and brought it back but for some reason he re-wrote it maybe in terms the cook could understand? though I wrote the entire name out.... What got me is the cook was a rude jerk.... So i POLITELY asked if it was OK to take a picture first he said "I prefer you don't" than he started going off on "Why would you even ask?" Ummm cuz I'm being courteous and polite!!!! And he mumbles a bunch of other junk and I'm like DUDE! "That is why I asked you first"...I guess I just shouldn't have asked and taken pictures....whatever the case I do business in MN and there are plenty of other choices I have for food... Honestly most Vegan/Vegetarian places have more pleasant employees...so it was a weird experience overall! Thanks but no thanks I won't be coming here again on my next Business Trip....

Yelp
Initially, I observed the place was dirty & the employees' hygiene made it unfit to be near food... but I was famished & figured I'd give it a go. They accept ONLY cash! The ordering process is confusing for the first-timer, as you write your own order from the menu (including price/s) & submit it. The food was subpar, as it was cold & bland. En route to the filthy restroom, an employee murmured a snide remark about my hat & upon retorting, it became bellicose & blatantly tried to impose its liberal political views upon me. If any of that sounds appetizing, then go give `em your $$$. I seriously don't know how such a place even stays in business...

Yelp
Great spot in West Bank on campus. Yummy breakfast burritos and good coffee. Nice atmosphere. We will be back.

Yelp
Cannot say enough good things about hard times! Cooperatively owned staple of Minneapolis, if you can only eat one meal anywhere while in town this is my recommendation. Lots of vegan options, damn good baked goods and coffee. Unpretentious order yourself at the counter, and pick up there too type service. Cash only, but they have an atm. I loved their biscuits and gravy. They played one of my favorite bands while I was there, and loudly! Plenty of merch available for purchase, including glitter stickers! I came back here three times during my long weekend visit, and would definitely be a regular if I lived in town.

Yelp
This place is a cash-only slightly-divey with some of the best and inexpensive comfort vegan food I've experienced. The migas was a generous portion of tofu, mushrooms, peppers with a spicy salsa and the signature olive. The space had an assortment of patrons for a late night visit. From a student trying to work on their studies to a group meeting up after a night out on the town. The menu is vast, and all vegetarian/vegan. Definitely on my list to visit again on my next trip to Minneapolis.

Yelp
This was one of my favorite places to eat and study in college. It definitely has a unique vibe. I love the vegan options and the servings are very generous.
