Best Weekday Breakfast Spots To Know in Charleston | Eater Carolinas

"Thoughtful pastries are the big draw at Harken Cafe, like the apple tahini muffins or brown sugar cake with pumpkin butter. But, if you have a free morning, grab a seat in the Parisian-inspired cafe and order a slice of quiche full of local produce or a fluffy egg sandwich on a ricotta biscuit." - Erin Perkins

Google
Obsessed with Harken ! This spot was 10/10. Their salads were fresh and unique with healthy ingredients. If you enjoy holistic eating, this is a must try spot. We LOVED the turmeric pumpkin seed apricot load ! We enjoyed it so much we came back twice a day for both breakfast and lunch ! … even grabbed their cookbook to try and recreate some of the recipes at home. The pasties were unique and artisan, always freshly baked. I loved the potato scallion salad and herb bean pea salad. 10/10 recommend. The pricing is also extremely reasonable.

We ordered a traditional macchiato, an iced caramel latte, the spinach artichoke bun, and the German chocolate bun. The pastries were tasty, but we didn’t know they could be warmed up until a friend mentioned they were asked. Wish that had been offered to us, since we definitely would’ve enjoyed them more that way. Coffee was solid, but we did notice a few flies on the open pastry case and in the bathroom, which was a bit off-putting. A cute spot overall, just a few small things that could make the experience even better.

Google
Came here for a latte and pastries - the selection was incredible. you can tell the scones & biscuits were fresh basked. I ordered a pimento scone & raspberry pound cake, only received the matcha chocolate chip muffin. We didn’t notice until later because we took it to-go, so that was disappointing! Otherwise would give it 5 stars

Google
Harken was a pleasant experience all around. The staff is super nice and personable. We brought our baby daughter with us and they loved talking to her and she made everyone smile. The coffee we had was delicious and had perfect flavor. It was a vanilla latte. We tried the chocolate chip cookie and it was fresh and to die for. The ambiance was very nice and peaceful. Seating inside and out too. I can’t say enough good things about Harken.

Google
Extremely cute and tiny coffee shop w/ indoor and patio seating. Coffee drinks were literally the best! ❤️. Great vibe. Busy!! Tried a German chocolate something biscuit- very good/unique/rich. Will definitely be back for coffee and to try something else.

Google
On a very busy morning, Alissa at the front gave me stellar customer service. Warm, genuine, helpful, knowledgeable. Harlem is one of the best cafes I’ve ever been to and as a frequent traveler I’ve been to some of the best! Baked goods and coffee are out of this world! Don’t miss this charming and delicious place in historic Charleston!

Google
Pretty tight spot with great atmosphere. Good coffee. We had granola and bacon omelette bisque - delicious and flavorful.

Google
This is the best coffee… and pastry shop… i have ever been to. It is a challenge to find something that isn’t good on the menu. The Latte’s and espresso are absolutely perfect and the scones/matcha green tea cake/spinach roll etc are literally perfect. I am not exaggerating here… Harken will be catering my wedding or any event.

Yelp
Wow! This place is fantastic! We are just vacationing in the area and saw this on yelp. The food is super good. We had butter me up and the Great Dane. I have not had breakfast that good in a while. Coffee was great too. Ambiance is super cool and clean. We are definitely going again before we leave.

Yelp
One of my favorite things to do on vacation is find great local coffee shops, and after my first visit to Harken I was hooked. We ended up going back two more times. This place is truly a gem. Everyone seems to know it too because there was a line every time. But honestly, it's worth the wait in my opinion. It's super cute but pretty small inside, so if the weather is nice, I'd suggest grabbing a seat outside. During our visits, we tried the butter me up biscuit, the brie and jam biscuit, and the pimento bacon biscuit. They were big but so light and fluffy. For drinks, we had the brown sugar rosemary iced latte (a seasonal special), the vanilla spiced iced latte, and the honey latte. I'll be dreaming about that brown sugar rosemary latte until I can hopefully have it again on my next trip.

Yelp
Looking for a quaint and delicious coffee shop? Make sure you stop by Harken (early - the line gets insane). We came early on a Monday morning (Labor day) and there was no line. Snagged a morning biscuit sandwich and matcha cookie - both were absolute bliss. Loved my spice vanilla latte - it gave me a nice little note of fall
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is very quaint, and it's a bit on the small side, but the quality of their baked goods and their coffee make up for it. If they happen to have the sweet potato apple muffins, snapped them up as quick as you can because they are awesome!
google avatar

Sabrina A.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and come here to get the coffee cake. Never knew avacado and pastry could taste so dang good.

Yelp
Sincere apologies to Harken and my husband for not dining here earlier... it's everything my husband said it would be! Gorgeous and cozy environment on a quiet street with a cute patio. Warm service at the counter and remarkable food at a great price point. I ordered an iced matcha and their daily sandwich - the matcha was $6 which is a price I'm used to, but the sandwich was $9 which is a steal for Charleston. Their daily sandwich was turkey, arugula, bacon, and a corn butter (omg) on focaccia. First things first, the focaccia was fluffy and flavorful. It's easy to settle for less quality focaccia since it's all so delicious, but this bread was truly quality!! Everything was seasoned well and felt fresh despite the sandwich being premade. The matcha was bright and lightly sweetened. I also tried my mom's salad trio and husbands ricotta biscuit..... you really can't go wrong here. While I didn't care for the hummus and one of the salads, the cucumber salad (changed daily I think) was out of this world. And I don't like any cucumber salad.

Yelp
Super cute spot in Charleston! Perfect to escape the heat and grab a small lunch and coffee. Everything was fantastic. Service was polite and looked like they enjoyed their job. Everything was fresh, felt healthy, and we would 100% return again. If we were locals, we'd be here all the time!

Yelp
Cute little bakery with a surprisingly big selection of sweet and savory options, and a lot of GF menu items as well! Came on a Thursday morning and it was pretty busy, I'm sure there is a line out the door on weekends; I wouldn't recommend going with a group as it may be hard to find seating, indoor or outdoor. The Butter Me Up sandwich was perfection, the ricotta biscuit was sooo good. Falls apart easily but so buttery. The egg soufflé with herby cheese was delicious. I got the bacon on the side because it's hard to know how places make it (I like it crispy and not stringy!), but they did good here!

Kathleen S.

Yelp
Harken is adorable! Staff were very friendly and helpful. Surprising amount of seating for such a small space. Coffee? Excellent. Got the Maple latte which was not too sweet. Food? Delicious!! Got the Butter Me Up and took a pimiento bacon jelly bun to go. Great location to start your day at as well if you want to walk around the French quarter. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Amazing coffee shop right in the thick of the action in Charleston. Excellent location and vibe, but prepared to wait in a line, that moves pretty quick. Delicious and reasonably priced coffee and treats. Went here back to back days and couldn't get enough of the quaint vibe. Highly recommend to anyone visiting.

Yelp
This was my first stop of the day during a long weekend trip to Charleston. It was well worth getting up on sunrise for a beautiful walk on queen street to this place. So many historic buildings on the way and this cafe is nestled right in the midst of the historic district. I got here before 8am on a Saturday so I beat the line. What a magical place and the whoopie cookie I got was so good. The lavender early grey latte was a perfect match. It was already packed inside but there's an outdoor seating area on the side and I enjoyed having my drink and cookie.
google avatar

Rebecca C.

Yelp
The coffee here was rather lightly brewed, and the flavor and acidity that we're used to in coffee didn't shine through. The cappuccino with oat milk had a richer coffee flavor than the one with whole milk. The lavender earl gray latte had a nice lavender essence, but there was almost no coffee taste. The turkey focaccia sandwich had a unique avocado pesto, cucumbers, and carrots. It was an interesting combo, but it worked. The focaccia bread was rather thick. The turmeric cake we tried had nicely dispersed fruit pieces, pumpkin seeds, and a light frosting with rose petals - it was not too sweet and rich in taste. For seating, there is both indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the counter.
google avatar

Joy S.

Yelp
Great service! It's our first time here and the lady at the counter is being patient with us. Everything we ordered was delicious. The Butter Me Up breakfast sandwich has a good combo of sweet and savory. I'm glad we stopped here for a quick bite after the cruise.

Lisa S.

Yelp
My husband was looking for a gluten free bakery treat - and he found it at this delightful shop! We were so impressed with the selection of GF items. I don't recall the name of what I bought (not GF), but it was absolutely delicious and satisfying! It looked like a chocolate-covered cinnamon roll. When I started eating it, I was happily surprised by the layers of dough (sort of like monkey bread). Every bite was delicious and had enough sweetness to go along with it! The item was so large that it took me two days to finish it. We are so sorry that we didn't have time to visit this bakery multiple times. I marveled at the selection of goodies, which was quite unique - there were so many creative combinations of ingredients.

Yelp
Went here on my visit to Charleston and really enjoyed the ambiance, the food and the service! The staff was super kind and answered all of our questions. We had some of their salads, black bean, and chopped salad. We also had the daily sandwich, which was so good! Chipotle sauce with turkey, avocado and lettuce. The cold brew was great too!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Stopped by here early on a Monday morning to fuel up before walking all around downtown. The menu has several gluten free options so I got a breakfast sandwich on gf bread and enjoyed a latte. Small seating inside, with AC and a small patio. Lots of yummy pastries and several of those were gluten free too, but since it was 8am I opted for only breakfast and not a chocolate treat.
google avatar

Yelp
This place was SO welcome after going on a cruise for 5 days!!! Great coffee, great food and a biscuit that can be best described as a religious experience! Seriously. And the Great Dane was a perfect dessert, and pairing with their amazing lattes! If I have to be picky, parking can be a pain, and the place is little and wouldn't accommodate a very big party. Atmosphere was 10/10.... Service 10/10.... Food and coffee was 12/10!! I bought a hat.... It's that good!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after a morning stroll around Charleston and boy was it a gem! This cozy cafe offers delicious bites, pastries, little salad bowls and sandwiches -- I genuinely wanted to try almost everything but I opted for a ginger tea + a pastry. My favorite part of it all was that everything is locally sourced. Their ingredients are so fresh which makes everything taste 10x's better. I originally wanted to get some work done here, and when I asked for the wifi password they mentioned that laptop use wasn't encouraged here + that they had no wifi -- I kind of loved that and instead i decided to take a pause and get some reading done. It was a gloomy day and it just felt right. The ambiance inside is so warm and welcoming. It's great for a coffee date or a solo date with yourself + the decor is so cute all around. From little tea tin cans as planters to the soft music playing in the background Harken Cafe is a true 5 star spot in my eyes!
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
A cute cafe located close to downtown. I got the Butter Me Up breakfast sandwich and a cold brew. First off, the biscuits were super flaky and the sauce was delicious on the egg souffle. It is a bit on the heartier side but nonetheless, this is a perfect breakfast to start a long day with and to take your coffee to-go and walk along the Battery. The cold brew was strong and delicious. What's also great about Harken is that oat and almond milk are available at no additional cost- winning!
google avatar

Niki R.

Yelp
I abandoned my husband and children at a touristy restaurant down the street that smelled of stale beer and was attempting to deafen passers by with very loud, bad flute music. There was a line out the door at Harken. The staff was young and female with an equal amount of style and attitude. The music was flute free and at an appropriate volume. I had a short wait for maybe the best iced latte I've ever had. I sat on a stool near the coffee bar and people watched. Tourists and locals alike streamed through. The decor is cozy and eclectic. I could live here. Came back the next day for a kombucha and another iced latte. Wish this was in my neighborhood, I would be a regular.
google avatar

Lexi L.

Yelp
The biscuits were delicious. Crispy and crunchy but not dry. Matcha was on the unsweetened side. Very cute shop & the staff was very kind
google avatar

Kathleen L.

Yelp
This is an update from three years ago. Everything I wrote then is still true. The pastry and Cappuccino we had this visit were also spectacular. Although it was early, we were lucky to get the last available indoor table to enjoy our breakfast. The food offerings are good, and the architecture is just so Charleston. BTW, there is comfortable outdoor seating available alongside the establishment.
google avatar

Christine Z.

Yelp
Everything is fresh and made to order. Super healthy and good for you options. I will be back.
google avatar

Kris L.

Yelp
Great tea, coffee and baked goods. I enjoyed the gluten free oat and berry bar, very filling and healthy tasting, not too sweet.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Everything about this Coffeeshop makes it one of the absolute best in Charleston. The scones are to die for. The lunches just wow from quinoa to quiche. The staff is so so so friendly and the decor is European and quaint. Love Harken!!!!
google avatar

Carly C.

Yelp
Easy 5 coffee shop! Super adorable vibes inside with incredible flavor combos and syrups. There is indoor and outdoor seating but it is limited. I tried the black sesame latte as well as the spiced vanilla latte and both were amazing. If you plan to go on the weekends keep in mind it can be busy!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Great service and super quick. Not the best for groups but perfect seating for intimate setting!
google avatar

Maddie B.

Yelp
Thought it was a great cafe! The yogurt and spiced latte was great- they also come in super cute mugs as well if you get them hot there. The seating area is quite limited on the weekend, and people left it quite dirty. So, the only thing I wish was that there was disinfectant or wipes available for the tables! Other than that, phenomenal!
google avatar

Jan K.

Yelp
This place is cute and charming. Luckily the line moved quickly but gave me enough time to look over the menu. Since this was a first visit I decided to keep it simple and ordered the Ricotta biscuit: Their "Signature morning pastry" with honey butter and compote and a cold brew. Coffee was good. The biscuit was cold and hard. More scone like and not what I personally prefer as a biscuit. I didn't have more than 2 bites. If you are expecting a fluffy buttery biscuit, this is not it.
google avatar

Zoe S.

Yelp
If you're in Charleston this is a staple to the town this cafe is so cute and the quality of food / coffee is top tier!! My favorite menu item is the avocado toast , it's unlike anything I've had and so unique. I love the spiced vanilla latte and their iced matcha. I recommend this place to anyone in town. They homemake all of their bakery items and create all the recipes !!
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
I will forever love Harken and their ricotta biscuit. It is to die for. The service is good and the seating both indoor and outdoor are so nice. Plus for outdoor is it's covered so even nice on a rainy day. The quiche is also top notch. Honestly can't go wrong with anything!
google avatar

Yelp
With a full day in front of us we made our way to this cafe after reading some good reviews and we were not disappointed! It was a popular Sunday morning spot for the after church crowd so we waited a little but it was worth it. The staff did not get our order right but the corrected it quickly and were otherwise helpful. The atmosphere was cozy and there was a a kind of Retro Chic feel to the place - lots of exposed brick, etc. For breakfast we had the "Butter Me Up" biscuit - Bacon egg cheese - gluten free scone was nice. Also had the Vanilla Scone with Lemon Glaze and a Turmeric Chai Latte that had a kind of Gingerbread flavor as well. Sweet! Very nice place and there were other interesting looking things on the menu worth coming back to try!
google avatar

Thuy N.

Yelp
Their GG bowl with cucumbers, avocado, pasta with that green goddess like sauce was out of this world. I would bring a bottle if that dressing idlf possible. The latte was also good. We went back the next day to try that bowl. It came with a a piece of focacia bread as well. Cute and earthy decor with green plants. I can see why this is a popular lunch spot. Their desserts also looked good and glad they do baking in house
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
GF brought me to this spot with the intention of grabbing a quick coffee. As soon as we laid eyes on the contents of their bakery display case, that plan changed. They were selling the most beautiful and large quiche slices I have ever seen in my life. This thing literally is a work of art. There was a queue when we arrived but it moved quickly. I ordered their lavender iced coffee, GF a dirty chai, and we ordered the quiche slice to split. They also have many other mouth watering scones, muffins, and other shit but we had a reservation at Magnolia's for lunch so had to keep it simple. The interior is super cute as well with ample seating inside and outside. The coffee was delicious (I love lavender!) but GF's dirty chai was spectacular. I took more sips than I should have and now that I'm reflecting, I should have taken advantage of every blink and turn of her head. Next time. The quiche was also incredible. It was loaded with veggies that made me feel better about myself, LIKE KALE, and was super tasty. I didn't even detect any egg in there and I personally don't like my quiches too eggy. The AC worked so well I was literally COLD sitting in there. Excellent place to grab coffee and a snack.
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
Baked goods are well done and fairly interesting - many seem to have the same biscuit base, so that discourages sampling. And if you're a breakfast fan, they stop serving at 11. In short- nice space, but loud and overly crowded. Nice people, elegant food, but a lot sells out early. Fine for to go, but not a relaxing space to be in. Usually a queue, but moves fairly quickly. First come first serve seating, with a few outdoor tables on the side.
google avatar

Bella M.

Yelp
We had the fabulous breakfast sandwiches, added bacon and avocado. The egg soufflé inside was light and fluffy, the biscuits were really moist and flavorful. The quiche was pretty good too, as were our beverages and I like that they have both still and sparkling water you can help yourself to. Really neat spot, I'd go again!
google avatar

Gabby A.

Yelp
What a nice stop in Charleston! The decor and ambience is very cute & aesthetic, but there is not a lot of seating, so I wouldn't totally recommend for larger groups. Even my group of 3 was a tight squeeze. All of the food looked and sounded delicious. I got the biscuit and it was absolutely 10/10. If I were local, I definitely would love to come back and try more. I also got the lavender latte; it was pretty good but nothing spectacular. Definitely a place I would recommend for breakfast or a pastry if you're in the area!
google avatar

Haley S.

Yelp
Wow this biscuit was really good. The butter me up breakfast sandwich is wonderful. I recommend adding bacon. Breakfast ends at 11am. Don't sleep on this place (pun intended).
google avatar

Alyssa B.

Yelp
Nice place with great coffee! Didn't have a pastry but they looked wonderful. Staff seemed a little stressed out but it was like 8 am on a workday so that's not surprising
google avatar

MICHELE M.

Yelp
Beautiful pastry shop, limited non bakery items. Diversity of baked goods including for vegan diners.
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
We stopped in for a light breakfast and coffee. The coffee was amazing. I got an early grey lavender latte which tasted so delicious and balanced. My husband got the "Butter Me Up" with bacon which is a breakfast sandwich w/ Herby Cheese, Fili West Egg Souffle, Pickled Shallot on a housemade Ricotta Biscuit. I got the "Green Thing" which is toast with Avocado, Sesame Tamari, Bulls Bay Flake Salt + Microgreens on Harken's Ciabatta. Both were so insanely delicious and so filling. We would absolutely come back and order everything again. Service is also efficient and the place is so cute. Minimal inside and outside seating. Bathrooms were clean and adorable as well.

Frank L.

Yelp
My fiance and I ordered 2 iced lattes plain and they were fantastic. The coffee was super smooth. We also ordered a few pastries to try. The Great Dane, Pump it up, and the Tea Time cookie. We were blown away with everything. The atmosphere inside was also a real vibe. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Emma P.

Yelp
The environment was so welcoming and I got a cold brew with their spiced vanilla, it was splendid however next time I would be more creative but their pastries all looked amazing would definitely get one next time.
google avatar

Regina G.

Yelp
When you go, and you should, expect to wait in line a bit! BUT, it's well worth it. Coffee is delicious and they make it quickly! Cashiers have always been kind and definitely know how to handle the line. I go several times for coffee when I'm in town. And this visit was the second time I ordered their breakfast biscuit sandwich. I added bacon and avocado and it's delicious! The biscuit is so unique. If you go during the week, breakfast is only served until 11, but all day on the weekends. Ambiance is charming and although there's limited seating inside, it's nice and cool and a lovely Charleston feel!

Rebekah M.

Yelp
We had a great time at Harken for breakfast. Perfect for a walk around Charleston followed by delicious coffee on the outdoor patio seating. Quiche and biscuits were huge.
google avatar

Georgia J.

Yelp
Loved our time at Harken! There was about a 10-15 minute wait to order but it flew by. It was very crowded and took a while to get our food, but we were very happy once it came! The biscuit sandwich checked all of my boxes and the biscuit was super soft. The yogurt was an amazing surprise - I ordered it on a whim and loved it. The sweet potato on it was 10/10!
google avatar

Casey T.

Yelp
I picked this place looking for a coffee but I was confronted with a petite, beautiful buffet bowl option right in front of me that included a chipotle pasta salad, fruit, beans, quinoa, focaccia, and hummus. You could have as many or few of those options in one bowl for $12 so I gave it a shot and it was the best thing I've eaten during my stay. I sat in a/c bliss in a quaint historic space marveling at how lucky I was to stumble across this little piece of perfection. Btw, the hummus was so good I just ate it up with my spoon!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Great spot for coffee and breakfast! Really cool ambiance inside with rustic vibes and wood decor. I got the spiced vanilla latte with almond milk and it wasn't too sweet, it tasted like actual spices and minimal sugar which I loved! They also have some great gluten free pastries - the green matcha ball was top notch and the 7 layer bar was a bit more decadent but a fun dessert item.
google avatar

Evan N.

Yelp
This place is so cute! The atmosphere inside is so welcoming and makes you feel good. A good amount of outdoor seating as well. There was a line but it didn't take too long to get through. I got the special latte which was a black sesame latte with sweeten condensed milk and genuinely one of the best lattes I've ever had. My girlfriend even got one of their shirts because it was so cool! All of the baked goods looked so good and everyone in line was so excited to get their favorite one as they all talked about them multiple times in line. This place brings a smile to my face even writing this.
