"For after-dinner drinks, head to Rye where the bartenders will concoct the drink of your choice using the freshest ingredients. It's the kind of mellow place that doesn't use its cool, candle-lit ambiance or stellar reputation as an excuse to hike up drink prices."

15 Bay Area Bars and Restaurants for Unexpected Flavors | Eater

"Amid the bombast of Polk Street on a Saturday night, this two-level, saloon-style bar keeps things classy with an on-point roster of craft cocktails. The drinks are named after friends and family of the bartenders, so you know each one is made with love. Going with a group? The Whiskey Two Ways is a crowd-pleaser." - Gabriel Schicchi

Harper & Rye - Review - Nob Hill - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Harper & Rye has strong and delicious cocktails, a hip but not overly pretentious interior, and a solid corner bar on Polk Street. All of these things make it an ideal spot for a first date, especially if you go up to the quieter second floor. If you’re not planning any dates at the moment, it’s also a good place for post-work drinks." - Taylor Abrams

The drinks were very good and the vibes was very cocktail vibe. There's some nice things to do like pool and other games. Everyone was having a good time and the bartenders were super nice. I got the Brit & Kell & the spee & the beast which was excellent. The upstairs and downstairs offer different vibes for what you're looking for and it's a nice open concept space.

Best bar ever. Cocktails were awesome and beautifully made. Thanks Josh for the entertainment.

Google
Great ambiance. What I loved most was that they did not care that I had a slice of pizza from outside to bring in - I did not have to finish my pizza before entering and I could live my dream of Pizza Beer Pizza Beer Pizza Beer. Great beer as well. Somewhat crowded but not that crowded especially given it was a Friday night.

Love this place! Great cocktails at a great price for the city. The staff is super friendly, especially Albert, who welcomes you at the door. Must stop by if you’re in the area!

Look, I was traveling in from out of the city and bars & drinking are absolutely not my vibe. Believe me when I tell you that this place was one of the highlights of my trip. What an comfortable and elegant place to just relax and have a drink. The loft is such a peaceful place to sit and people watch. The bathrooms are soooo clean and tidy. The bartender who served my friend and I was an absolutely charming individual and was a pleasure to chat with. I want to travel back to SF just to be here again!

Google
This is my closest bar to home and it’s super bittersweet because the drinks are amazing, but in the 3/4 times I’ve gone the customer service has been so bad that I don’t go back. If it felt like the bartenders wanted my service at all maybe things would be different.

Google
Great cocktails, fun atmosphere- and they have one of the kindest and sweet bartenders you’ll find in town. Michael is the best!

Google
Atmosphere is very good and drinks are good too. One of the best bars I know of in SF for meeting and talking to people.

Yelp
Went in on a Friday night at around 8:15 pm and it was pretty packed but we were able to find seating for the two of us at the area near the pool tables. The interior is so pretty with the half circle bar and the dark wooden fixtures. Spee & Beast - Whiskey paired with sour fruits always reminds me of a whiskey sour which is one of my favorites so I tried this cocktail that had Japanese whiskey, lemon, lemongrass and blood orange. The whiskey came through pretty strong but the blood orange and lemon helped balance it out with the sourness. My friend and I enjoyed the vibes of the bar, especially being able to sit and talk while sipping our drinks.

Yelp
My first time going out in this area and was an experience for sure. Was packed on a Friday night as expected. Would suggest getting in early to utilize the pool table + seating areas.

Yelp
From the atmosphere to the drinks themselves this place never disappoints. I've tried almost all their cocktails at this point and have loved every one of them. It can get rowdy at night sometimes but is overall a strong choice for any night out. They change their cocktails occasionally and I can't wait to see what new ones they make next.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood bar. It's dark and moody inside, with lots of seating including an upstairs loft area. There's also a pool table at the back. It's busy during the weekdays but weekends are packed. My favorite drink on the menu is the Tash & Erik -- it has a unique flavor to it!
google avatar

Yelp
Harper and Rye is one of my fav bars on Polk! The arched bar is beautiful and the space is split into 2 levels with a pool table in the back. Plenty of tables to grab a seat at and usually a nice crowd. It can get packed depending on the weekend but generally isn't a problem to get in. The bouncers are nice and their featured cocktails are really good, I loved the Bee's Knees that I had recently. Really solid spot to grab a drink and vibe in a lowkey yet buzzing atmosphere.

Yelp
This is such a cool bar in the Polk Gulch. Harper and Rye had such a great vibe to chill with friends, have a solid first date, and even a loud lively pregame with a party! In the afternoon, the space has so much natural light, lively plants, and the furniture/rustic wood vibes bring energy to the bar. On the weekends/night, the space is filled with lots of people/laughter and brings an energetic vibe. The cocktail menu is solid, I got the Tash and Erik: gin, ginger, mango, tumeric, lime. It was fresh and light. I also like their beer selection.

Yelp
Very well thought out and more importantly well executed cocktail menu. Bar staff is talented and the drinks are thoughtful and delicious. One of the better ambiance spots on Polk street as well. Makes for a combination worth seeking out if you're looking to expand your spot of great bars in San Francisco.

Yelp
This a lovely classic cocktail bar that I've returned to time and time again. I recently visited to meet up with friends. I arrived early, thanks to an on-time 1-California bus. The bartender quickly welcomed me and handed me a menu. The menu is thorough and provided a few options that tickled my fancy. I also noticed a fun seasonal cocktail menu on the wall. The atmosphere is fun, cool, and speakeasy-ish. My friends were able to quickly order drinks and we sincerely enjoyed our time together. It was also a nice little bonus that a college basketball game that we were interested in was on TV. Harper & Rye will remain on my go-to cocktail destination list!

Yelp
Best cocktail bar! This is my Monday night spot. Best bartender and martini in the city.
google avatar

Florence K.

Yelp
Came on a weekend and there was surprisingly a lot of space and some empty tables. Tables are typically first come first serve. The cocktails are decently priced as well. I got the Nick and Janet, which was pretty good and sweet.

Yelp
A $5 mongo cocktail and heavily? Omg definitely try this. Ambience and service is great as well

Yelp
VIBE: - 2 bartenders were busy and professional - lively - pool tables - I will try and update the menu if I go back, it hasn't been updated on Yelp in awhile DRINK: - bourbon with rye (I forget what it was called on the menu) (8/10) - Ghostown IPA (brewed in Oakland!) (10/10) - good quality - many many options

Yelp
Bar is great, have some good Gin options for me! Love my Gin! Service was great, the one guy working was slammed but you would never know. He put on a show and was able to hold 3 conversations at once. Honestly he was just amazing if he started juggling it wouldn't surprise me. The space is a great size but has some areas to make you it more private if you are in a date or want some privacy. Few pool tables and some seats upstairs. Clean bathrooms yes clean even at 10pm
google avatar

Yelp
Not exactly locals but needed to use the restroom. Julian, no questions asked, let us in to use the restroom after hitting so many places on Polk. We stayed for a drink and Julian was laid back, friendly and made a great gin & tonic. Thanks for the conversations & drinks. The bar is a cool vibe, airy and large. Hope to come back when back in town.

Yelp
Bartender will scoff when you ask for NA drinks and shit talk about you to other people. Bartender said he only sells alcohol.... Please get with the times. Almost all bars offer NA options now because not everyone can drink or want to drink alcohol.

Yelp
It's a great bar! I love to come here with friends on weekends. I wouldn't come here during weekends tho unless there is a special event. The staff is super nice too!
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute bar to come on a date or girls night out, lots of seating on the main floor and lofted area! The ambiance gives elevated and moody but it's pretty casual. Service is good, doorman is super friendly and bartenders do what they gotta do. Also they have $13-14 drinks which is a great price point for a bar/lounge like this!!
google avatar

Yelp
Cute spot for drinks in Nob Hill! My friends and I stumbled upon this bar while waiting for the House of Prime Rib just a few blocks away. Bouncer at the door was friendly and welcoming. The cocktail menu was small but all the drinks sounded interesting and yummy! There was ample seating indoors, and even a pay to play pool table in the back. Ordering at the bar was a little tough as there were only two bartenders and seating across the bar was FULL - so it was a little hard to grab anyone's attention. Bartenders were quick with their order, but were standoffish and only really attended to your orders. I ordered the Tom & Coco, which is their version of an espresso martini. It was creamy, but strong tasting - but not bad!

Sam M.

Yelp
Pretty misleading. Harper & Rye is not a cocktail bar, it is just a dive bar. Walked into the bar and asked for a drink menu. Bartender said they had no menu which is odd since I have been here multiple times before and they had a menu. Then when I asked for drink recommendations he rudely responded "you could have a glass of water". It was enough to make me not order anything. I guess Harper & Rye is just another shitty Dive Bar. At this point the only thing this place has going for it is the ambiance. Per their website this place serves craft cocktails but as of late it seems this place has completely given up on their mission to be a neighborhood cocktail bar and are now just a dive bar with high prices for drinks. Not worth coming in again.

Benjamin S.

Yelp
If you like getting charged for what you didn't order, this is the place for you. The vibe was ok, the drinks ok too, but it really was sh*tty to be charged for something you didn't put on your tab. The price was high. Won't be returning.

Yelp
I love Harper & Rye. Have been loving it for years. Would usually come on the weekend but today...came on a Monday night to a quiet Harper & Rye and it was such a lovely experience to truly enjoy the space, the beautiful venue, and be able to hear each other (vs. shouting) while enjoying a week night catch up From classy to party, Harper & Rye has it all Just know that if you come on the weekend to not be surprised if you have to wait in line, because it is a really fun place with delicious drinks
google avatar

Arjoyita R.

Yelp
Would not recommend this bar. The drinks are meh and the service is lousy. The bartender we interacted with was very rude and straight out passive aggressive. They need to make their behind the bar service better if they need customers to return, especially given the competition around the area.
google avatar

Bessie T.

Yelp
A place to see and be seen. Reasonable prices for alcoholic beverages. Big & open spaces. Pool table at the back. The two bartenders and one bus person do not miss a beat. Fast, efficient and effective. Amazing how they keep up with all the orders so quickly. Will definitely come back. Place is probably good for bigger groups, not so much for intimate conversations.
google avatar

Yelp
The bar tender in the Cowboy hat called me a Faggot when I ordered a beer. He the. Got upset when I refused to tip him, saying he was entitled to a tip.

Yelp
great place for a craft cocktail and can also just be the neighborhood bar. good ambiance

Yelp
My favorite bar on Polk St hands down! Coming in any day throughout the week is great here! Even on a random Monday or Tuesday. I love how cozy it is in there and how simple yet nice the bar is. Be careful on the weekends! It can get extremely packed. Sometimes I have to squish my way through people because of how packed it is. But no worries, you can always hop around to different bars along Polk. The bartender is super nice and friendly. I always have a good time here and the drinks are great! I love their spin on things and their specialty cocktails are so unique and refreshing. I think I've tried all their specialty cocktails on their menu now and I loved trying all of them.

Yelp
Great place. Cool 2nd floor overlook onto the main bar. Didn't have to wait for drinks. And since they don't serve food they were fine with us bringing in tacos from next door. There are a ton of food options in the area so it's fantastic you can come in with whatever you like
google avatar

Gered S.

Yelp
Me and my Fiancé had a reservation for house of prime rib. we didn't know what to do while we waited so we walked around and stumbled across this place! Let me tell you, their old fashioned is the Smoothest old fashioned i've had. The bartender was super nice and he was very professional and he got finished with mine and her drink in about 5 minutes. Will definitely be coming here again next time we're in SF
google avatar

Yelp
5 stars without a doubt. Neighborhood favorite. Woodsy, hipster ambience with tvs, a pool table and upstairs balcony for more space. Roger took excellent care of us and made the yummiest spicy margarita I've ever had. Mixed with love and some delicious ingredients, we had to have more! Casual spot with friends, date night, or happy hour with coworkers - highly suggest!

Yelp
We tried their TOM & COCO, a blend of vodka, cold brew coffee, sea salt, coffee liqueur, and chocolate bitters, along with the SPEE & BEAST, featuring Japanese whiskey, lemon, lemongrass, and blood orange. Both cocktails were decent in taste. We had an enjoyable time overall.
google avatar

Claudine V.

Yelp
Love this bar. Love the drinks. Love the vibe. No line on a Saturday night. Clean bathrooms. Love the space and the couches where you can sit and enjoy your drinks. Will def be back when I visit. Trust!!
google avatar

Yelp
Got a bad tasting cocktail, something with blood orange, hated it but finished it because I paid for it. Got food poisoning. My friend asked me to go back two days later. I said no because I got sick. So they go without me, and one of my friends end up with food poisoning. I mean it's a decent bar, I'd go back. I still like it. But it's mandatory that I tell everyone that me and a friend got food poisoning here.
google avatar

Isa B.

Yelp
Tried the Chapo cocktail! So delicious. Took off a star because it was so loud inside my friends and I had to scream about the table. But drinks and vibe were good!
google avatar

Ben L.

Yelp
Love this bar. Always try to swing by for a drink whenever I'm in the city. They have a wide variety of whisky and the prices are pretty reasonable for the big boy bottles. It gets lively here in the evenings on the weekend and it's a great atmosphere.
google avatar

Connor H.

Yelp
Harper & Rye's easy-going vibe with roomy standing room, leather couches, and a no-thrills bar fosters a good venue for a night out with friends. There's a loft area with a view of Polk Street, pool tables, and public restrooms. Go for the Spee & Beast if you prefer taste over spirit. I absolutely loved this cocktail, which entertained a refreshing, fruity flavor without overpowering the blood orange or liquor. I would definitely order the Spee & Beast again. The Tash & Erik was also tasty, but more spirit-forward. The bartenders weren't the friendliest, but it was a 5 star experience otherwise!

Yelp
I stopped by Harper & Rye to kill some time on a Tuesday evening before a dining reservation at House of Prime Rib down the street. The place was empty when I stopped by at 6:00 p.m. My group of four settled on sitting at the corner table in the front area right next to the bar. The cocktails here are affordable compared to the rest of San Francisco, at around $13 each. In the hour that I was hanging out here, I ended up ordering two Dylan & Bianca's -- bourbon, all-spice, white vermouth, amaro, and bitters. The cocktail drank like an Old Fashioned, albeit on the sweet side. Because of how empty the bar was, I had no issues placing my cocktail orders, nor closing out my tab at the end of my visit. Harper & Rye is a chill place to hang out on Polk Street -- I'd stop by again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
Great drinks and service. Highly recommend the Old Fashioned or the Manhattan. Beautiful interior.

Yelp
Just came here to come here before my dinner at House of Prime Rib and the service was very quick and the service was amazing. It's a pretty large location and wasn't busy around 3:30pm on a Saturday afternoon. I got a drink that's equivalent to a espresso martini and it was strong yet delicious. They have pool tables at the back as well. Such an inviting place.
google avatar

Yi Z.

Yelp
All the drinks are named after human names, which was interesting. We sat down at the bar, was waiting for the bartender to get to us. We waited for about 8-10 min, and made multiple eye contacts with the bartender. He also saw us too. But he went to a couple who just entered the door and took their order immediately. I am not sure what we did or how we looked made him skip us so blatantly ?? Lol. Apparently we didn't meet his standard to be served. Rude service, for unknown reasons. There are so many better bars around, don't waste your time here.
google avatar

Chloe H.

Yelp
A cute and spacious bar on Polk St, Harper & Rye serves a variety of cocktails, beers, and wine. The decorations are industrial, and it was reasonably busy on a Monday night. The cocktail menu is relatively small and consists of about a dozen options, most of which feature a vodka base. They use a lot of spices in their cocktails, which is definitely new and interesting and grew on me over time, but I can't say I am the biggest fan of a spicy cocktail.
google avatar

Yasmin K.

Yelp
Amazing vibes - some days it's a chill divey energy, other days it's a lit scene w/ a line out the door. Best of both worlds, baby! Shoutout my boy Michael, he makes the best aperol spritz's
google avatar

Meghan H.

Yelp
Very cool ambiance at this bar on Polk that fills up quickly at night on the weekends, but doesn't require a cover. There is pool in the back if you are lucky enough to get the table, and seating upstairs that overlooks the very extravagant display of bottles they have behind their bar. Harper & Rye is also dangerously close to Bob's donuts which is open late at night, if you have a sweet tooth like me.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
Harper & Rye is a cozy bar in the middle of Russian Hill. With a wide selection of drinks, an two levels of seating, and a pool area, it's a great place for small groups or larger crowds. With lots of drink options and reasonable prices for SF, it's a great place to hit after work. The Hazy IPAs were widely enjoyed, while Tom & Cocoa wasn't great. Overall, it was a great time.
google avatar

Mallory C.

Yelp
Lived on Polk for 5 years and loved coming to Harper and Rye for their amazing cocktails, atmosphere, and staff. They make you feel like family. I still make the trek from Marin to come visit one of my favorite spots in the city.

Syndi Q.

Yelp
It was fate that the bar I was supposed to go to was too crowded and this one was just down the street. I got here before the rush on a Friday night and was able to get a seat at the bar. I love watching the bartenders make the drinks and was amazed by how quickly they were able to process everyone's order despite how crazy busy it was. The bartender that served my friend and I that night was SO NICE I wish I got his name. The vibes were immaculate. The decor kind of reminds me of Harry Potter. I can't wait to bring my sister when she visits
google avatar

Yelp
[TLDR: Beautiful open space, lofted table seating, billiards and couch area, great liquor selection.] If you're looking for an airy spot to grab a drink, have a chat, and hang out for a while, Harper & Rye is the place to go. I stopped by in around 4:30 on a Wednesday and had almost every seat available for my choosing. People started filing in about an hour later, but even when about of the venue was full, I could still hear my own conversation just fine. The decor was modern and light, which felt refreshing. I also really liked the different types of seating available: couch, bar, table, corner, and standing. (Does billiards count as another?) Their liquor selection was extensive and the bartender knew how to make some tasty cocktails. I didn't jump for any of the house cocktails on their menu, but a few admittedly caught my eye. I'm looking forward to paying this place another visit!
google avatar

Yunjing H.

Yelp
Nice ambience with a lot l of seating area. It's always busy on the weekend whenever I walk by but people move in and out so it's not too difficult to find seats. There are a good variety of fun cocktails and standard prices for cocktails in sf. Good for dates or going out with friends on Polk street.

Yelp
I walked in on a double date and the place smelled weird, like some odd cleaning detergent. We walked in and the bartender may or may not have greeted us. We looked through the menu and I did not want anything from it, so I asked for two Long Islands to which the the bartender seemed stumped and pretentiously said "we don't do that here or AMFs, etc". My boyfriend then looked at the menus again and the bartender said "we can make drinks off menu too, you know? You don't have to order something on the menu". That stumped me because how are you going to decline rudely what I request off menu then say you can make things off menu? How would I know what you can or can't make? Anyways, we ordered cocktails off the menu, and they were okay, but they barely tasted like there was any alcohol in it- hence, why I initially wanted the Long Island. My boyfriend tried making convo with the bartender asking if they get busy and play music there and the bartender said "yeah but we're not like a club". Okay? Way to state the obvious. I wouldn't go back due to the standoffish customer service. We were the only four customers in there and now I know why.
