"If you only have time for one nice dinner in town, plan it at this upscale southern restaurant that feels like a classy Savannah bistro dropped 360 miles from the Washington coastline. They have pimento cheese slathered on crostini, blue cheese-dusted chicken wings, and refreshing salads that make shaved celery the protagonist. Then, focus on any entree that comes with creamy grits, whether that’s chicken schnitzel with tangy white BBQ sauce or braised halibut cheeks. When celebrating something—even if it’s the fact that you resisted the urge to blow your money at Thorp Fruit on the drive out east, make sure to ask for the private wine cellar table, which is essentially a big glass box that feels very special." - aimee rizzo

"Traditional Southern fare and hospitality await at this happening downtown spot. Husband-and-wife team Lindsay and Richard Hattaway hail from Alabama and Georgia, and they’ve brought their delicious traditions with them, reflected in dishes like southern pork with red pea salad and confit duck on dirty rice. Don’t miss the Beecher’s pimento cheese or the locally famous celery Parmesan salad either." - Stephanie Forrer

I was not disappointed with taking my mother out for dinner. Omg the pickles, so good. We shared the smoked tuna dip, celery salad, she got the halibut cheeks, I got the duck with dirty rice, and bread pudding. All of it was amazing. The cocktails were lovely. Service was a beautiful flow of people genuinely glad to see us. Highly recommend this place, though reservations are recommended in advance as their bar area is not big for walk-ins.

Google
The group I was with has been here quite a few times and they were a bit disappointed with how salty their dishes were this time around. Mine was also a bit salty, but it was very yummy. I had the spaetzle with roasted pork shoulder, others had the fried chicken n grits and the halibut cheeks. We ordered a celery salad to share. I don’t like celery but this was really good! We also ordered the fries and pimento cheese. We skipped dessert and went to ice cream instead. I would absolutely try this place again though. The service was excellent!

Google
Made reservations as it was spring release weekend... The food was insane, the service was excellent, and I was overall super impressed. The halibut cheeks and oysters were both memorable and the drinks were lovely. Can't wait to return.

Absolutely lovely. This spot had been on my list for quite some time, and I finally had the opportunity to visit. Locally-sourced menu is always what I’m looking for, and they do it so well!

After 30 years in the restaurant business I rarely give a 100% review but... this place wowed me. I had few options on a Monday (still a pet peeve of mine) but glad the reviews and photos led me here. Parked easily, close to downtown and honestly, c walking distance from my hotel, if I had known better. The minute I walked in the staff was all smiles. No reservation but asked to sit at the bar, as per my usual. I was seated, greeted, watered and "pickled " (their gift snack) within 3 minutes. I had looked at the menu online so was prepared to order. Only one item was different from what was posted on the website, and i am accustomed to changes because restaurants I prefer are seasonal, so no surprise there. I like to observe and after my years of experience can often pick up on subtleties others don't. I saw training taking place, new staff, runners, a manager, and so much more going on... but so smoothly and consistently that I don't think anyone else would notice. From the EXEMPTIONAL bar service (I wish I knew her name) to the brand new support staff, every detail was on point. Water service, clearing plates, warm finger towel... without pretense. I ordered the sticky ribs and marrow for starters. I wish I had a way to describe the perfection but.. 100%... 10/10... you should order. I finished my old fashioned (my go to first drink) precisely with the last bit of ribs. Then ordered the Barbara with the roasted oysters. DO NOT MISS this combo. I was worried the smoked gouda would overpower the rest... but NO... I don't think I've had a more balanced bite in my lifetime. I didn't have time for dessert but my bar neighbors suggested the bread pudding so I ordered it to go, about to bite into it now. Even the utensils, with their wood looking texture, and the bill served in a cookbook, thrilled me. I know this sounds ridiculous but at almost 50 and have managed multiple fine restaurants and eaten at plenty of others... I can't rave enough about my meal here. I'll be back. I might even drive 3 hours from home JUST to eat here again. Well done!!!

Last evening I celebrated my 70th birthday with 2 of my friends at Hattaway's. It was the first time all of us had been there. It was a wonderful!! Our server Trinity was such a gem, helping me decide on my food choices (to avoid anything too spicey). She was very attentive and kind. Each of us ordered 3 courses, sharing our food with each other. Everything was so delicious! They topped off our meal with champagne on the house to toast my birthday. I highly recommend you go there for an amazing dining experience!! 😄

The Good: Excellent service. Our waitress was attentive, friendly and swift. I wish I remembered her name to mention. Atmosphere is good if you like low-light setups. The Food: Can be hit or miss. I did not find any of the dishes we ordered memorable. Price to quality ratio is quite high. The broccolini dish we ordered was borderline burnt (not charred). The addition of the burnt shallots (as mentioned in menu) only made it worse. Grits shined in the halibut cheeks dish, which doesn’t bode well for a $37 halibut dish. The cheeks might have been overcooked as they were quite stringy. The radicchio salad and beef cheeks dishes were on point, however, nothing extraordinary. I’m giving 4 stars for the overall experience. However, the food leaves lot to be desired.

Google
Great dinner, excellent service, nice atmosphere. The charred broccolini and the celery and fennel salad were excellent. My husband loved his spaetzle with ragu sauce. A couple of things would have earned a 5 star instead of 4 though. My entree of grilled octopus was served with cornbread croutons that were overly sweet and didn't really go with the dish in my opinion. The serving included only one small piece of octopus, I could've eaten two... Also, we ordered a fresh berry salad for dessert, that was good but unfortunately hidden under a giant serving of orange flavored whipped cream that kind of defeated the health benefits of the berries LOL. We would eat there again though, overall a very nice experience!

Yelp
Marissa was our server and she was amazing. She checked on us often and made sure we were well taken care of. The food was really good! We will definitely be going back!

Yelp
I'm an old guy. I've been fortunate enough to eat a lot of wonderful meals in many different places both here and abroad. So many in fact, that many fine establishments I've enjoyed have faded from memory. There are a handful however, that were so wonderful that they are impossible to forget. Hattaways in Walla Walla Washington is one of them. From the moment we walked in, until the last bite of dessert, everything was outstanding. The service was friendly, informative, and efficient. The atmosphere was charmingly simple, and the crowd convivial. As first timers. I cannot speak for the entire menu, but I can tell you that the corn salad was so delicious and so different from anything I've ever had, if I'd stopped with that one dish, I'd still give Hattaway's a rave review. The pickles presented gratis as a snack were similar to a bread and butter pickle, but with a spicy sweet punch that made them far from ordinary. The entree, grilled Steelhead trout on a bed of finger potatoes, was cooked to perfection. Dessert was a large square of bread pudding with dabs of chocolate in a bourbon carmel sauce that melted in my mouth. The decaf coffee we ordered to accompany it was a full french press pot that we steeped to our liking before pressing the plunger. We live several hundred miles away, but Hattaway's is a restaurant that I'd seriously consider driving the distance to just to experience again.

Yelp
Dinner here was such a wonderful way to wrap up a day of tasting in Walla Walla! The table ordered oysters and Brussels sprouts to start and the Brussels sprouts were so good that we ended up getting 3 more orders. They are pure magic! I got the shrimp fried rice and it was crunchy, flavorful, and incredible. I LOVED it! They had plenty of gluten free and pescatarian options on the menu, but my vegetarian friends mostly ordered starters. We wished the wine list would have been a bit more lengthy or impressive given the location of the restaurant, we had a hard time finding something we liked and our waitress didn't know what would pair with our meal. It feels like they could have had some pre selected wine pairings or something due to the nature of the restaurant. The service was okay! Our server was kind but did get a few things confused. We were a big group, so didn't really mind and were patient about this. I would totally come back for the food!

DeAnna L.

Yelp
This place is crave-able! They pay attention to the details from the way they source locally grown food to their impeccable service. We truly enjoyed our meal and every dish and drink we ordered.

Taylor S.

Yelp
Loved the food and hospitality here! We had the tomato salad and tuna dip as apps and the halibut cheeks for dinner! So tasty!

Leon T.

Yelp
We ate at Hathaway's on 15th of September. There were four in my party. Two of us enjoyed our meals. Those two had the chicken and jalapeño grits which I tasted and was excellent. One person ordered the halibut cheeks, but doesn't like grits. So I don't know why she ordered it in the first place. I thought it was good. The restaurant was packed and it appeared everybody was having fun. I however ordered the duck confit and was extremely disappointed. Mainly because there was no duck. Everyone looked at my plate and laughed and asked me what I had ordered. I said I ordered the duck. When the waitress came back to ask us how everything was tasting, everyone looked at me. I explained to the waitress that there was no meat. I got a snotty reply that that's the way confit is and it's ground up in the rice. I know what confit is and that was a pile of rice. I didn't want to make a scene with the guests but everyone could tell I was disappointed and it put a real damper on our evening. The restaurant was recommended to us and I promptly went back and explained to the recommender that they should not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. Today, I just went back to look at the reviews and the pictures of the duck, and that is not what I received. I should have pressed the waitress more or asked to speak with the manager. People that know me know that I seldom complain about my food. I 1)can't believe the waitress responded to me the way she did and 2) someone actually allowed a plate without any meat to come out to the table. I did not give five stars because of my experience. And I did not give one star because others at the table enjoyed their meal. I wish I had a picture to share.

Layne S.

Yelp
This is an attractive restaurant where we had excellent service. The sticky ribs were great. We should have had two orders instead of sharing one. We also shared spaetzle and pork shoulder. It was okay. Cocktails and wine were good. The main issue we had was that they play the music too loud. That detracts from the experience.

Craig H.

Yelp
I visited Walla Walla last weekend to do some wine tasting with my girlfriend. We came here on Saturday night and it was really good. Despite it being busy, the food was top notch and the service was solid. This was a great place for a romantic dinner to cap of a day of wine tasting.

Valerie P.

Yelp
Delish! Another reastaurant server recommend them and it's great Nice ambiance smd staff.

Sin L.

Yelp
Just returned here and it is every bit as good if not better. Got the steak this time and a bunch of different appetizers. If you haven't eaten here, you should.

Jon H.

Yelp
We love Hathaways. Every time we visit Walla Walla we have to go here for at least one dinner. They have outstanding cocktails and as one would expect in wine country a great wine list as well. But the food! I've never had anything off this menu I wouldn't recommend. The only thing I don't recommend is eating lunch before you come for dinner because you're going to regret that your stomach is too small. It's not that they overwhelm me with portions, it's just the food is so good. You don't want to stop. Restaurant itself is always busy and a bit loud, but they do have a private dining area and in good weather, you can be seated outside. Services and professional, and this is a great spot for a small group or even as many as 12 with reservations. Well done, we'll be back again.

Nancy D.

Yelp
I had the ginger glazed steelhead today and it was delicious, I recommend it highly. The bartender/server was friendly and I had a really nice time.

Brooke B.

Yelp
Unparalleled service. Full of suggestions and personality. Attentive to our needs and overall just seemed happy to be there! The food was outstanding. Choices for everyone and decent portions. Not too much...just enough. Inventive cocktails. My friend and I both stepped out of our comfort zone to try unique combos that did not disappoint! Ambiance is great. Happy parties all around celebrating good food and good times. Our reservation was an hour after we showed up and they were more than willing to make it work for us. Hands down a must-try if visiting Walla Walla.

Munzer Q.

Yelp
Beautiful spot to dine or have cocktails. We stopped in without a reservation and the seated us for some drinks and snacks. The service was fantastic and 5 stars. We ordered our drinks, had the snacks and enjoyed the vibe the place offers. One of the best in WW.

Peter A.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Walla Walla. Hands down. Try the pimiento cheese. It won't disappoint.

Lesa S.

Yelp
We had pleasant surprise for our 43rd Anniversary. I made reservations but showed up a day early and the staff was so sweet and found us a table!! Marc the waiter was great and really helpful in selecting our food. I would return to enjoy some other options! The appetizer was delicious!

Sharna E.

Yelp
We were in town to visit family and what a treat we found .. Hathaway's !! The beef cheeks with pasta was delicious, the shrimp risotto was yummy as well . Abi our server was delightful and helpful. Really a cute little place with some outdoor space for warmer weather. Would definitely recommend and go back !!

Kelli H.

Yelp
Cute little bar with the friendliest bar tender. Some wines on tap but they weren't cold enough for us. Cocktails were on the high end price wise. We were given some complimentary pickles that were delicious! We promptly ordered our meals and our food came out quick. The flavors of both our entrees were a home run for us. While we loved our experience here two glasses of wine and two entrees was quite expensive at $120. We enjoyed our time here though and would go back and recommend to others!

Laura M.

Yelp
We had a 7:15 reservation on a Saturday night--quite crowded so thankful for that. I had the creole shrimp toast as a starter, was delicious and my friend enjoyed her celery salad. I then had the halibut cheeks, a tasty flavor combination with the grits and sauce but for me the cheeks were perhaps a bit lost in that accompaniment. My friend had the ginger salmon and she loved it. We appreciated the ability to enjoy some Cayuse wine which was sold by the ounce, 2 ounces of it helped me appreciate what all the fuss was about. Nice evening

Charles L.

Yelp
We definitely had a five star experience at Hattaways. We ordered the pimento cheese appetizer, the celery parm salad, and the duck and lamb entrees. All were delicious. The service was excellent, and they've done a nice job with sound deadening materials to keep the place from being too noisy when full. We enjoyed the experience so much that we went back for the second night of our stay in Walla Walla and ordered the same dishes.

M D.

Yelp
We had a terrific dinner here during a short stay in Walla Walla. There's a heatwave going on and it was a pleasure to walk into the restaurant and find it nicely air conditioned. The service was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed refreshing mocktails and then a delicious meal. Standouts were the rich shrimp toast appetizer and my chicken and griits, which had nicely balanced flavors, with the pickled peppers, creamy grits, and moist fried chicken. My son ordered the ribeye steak--a very generous portion and he raved about the smoky flavor and tenderness. The only downside was that the ribeye is a la carte; it would be nice if it came with a little vegetable. Really good meal!

John M.

Yelp
Wow! They nailed another fantastic dinner. Start to finish, awesome. Mark gave us great service, each course better than the one before. The fish balls were unreal, as was the braised pork on plantain chips. We can't wait to goback.

Frank H.

Yelp
Service and ambiance were great! Food was unique but not exceptional. Worth going to while in Walla Walla.

Julie A.

Yelp
The ambiance was perfect for a family gathering to listen to stories. The waitress was attentive always showing up when we needed something and disappearing when we didn't. I had the Duck and Dirty Rice with an oh so tender bird and the flavors of the rice complimented but did not overwhelm the bird. Everyone else at my table loved their food, even the finicky eaters. I can't comment on the drinks because I didn't indulge. Didn't indulge in dessert either but I still wouldn't have given up on my first course of roasted Brussels sprouts. I would definitely go back for special occasions.

Sheela V.

Yelp
The food in Walla Walla did not disappoint! What we got : Brussel sprouts, fries, pimento cheese, and the garlic spatzle. The food was more than enough for the both of us, and we even had to take some home. I got the modern love cocktail which was delicious. We finished off with the chocolate torte which was amazing!! High recommend all, but I think you can skip the fries for a more noteworthy dish. Our favorite was the Brussels Sprouts. Vegetarian friendly?: yes, there were good options. Be warned that they don't do a lot of substitutions in the meat dishes for veggies because the chefs don't want to compromise the flavor which was fair Service: Ana was awesome! She was friendly and even gave us complimentary champagne toasts. Reservation: yes make one in advance! We had one at 645 on a Sunday and it was still packed in there. Overall a great restaurant and great way to end our Walla Walla trip!

Stacy S.

Yelp
Finally made it to Hattaway's and enjoyed our visit. I loved the tomato salad and smoked oysters. The summer corn was good, but had a bit too much aoili. My friends enjoyed the Ettouffe and duck confit fried rice. (I'm a pescatarian, so I didn't try these dishes.)

Foo B.

Yelp
First time in this place recently and I was blown away. And I'm picky. The menu is a bit on the limited side, but the one meal I had made my food-brain explode with joy. The blackened scallops with the smoked gruyere grits was a flavor bomb like nothing I've experienced with scallops before. Simple place with no frills front desk/service and a nice patio outside. Service was great - wine options by the glass were ok- but I liked what I ordered. I'm definitely going back to this place - whoever is making the food is killing it.

Helicopter H.

Yelp
The only thing that surpasses Hattaway's food is the service. We had Megan last night, and she was so professional, courteous, knowledgeable, and cheery pleasant. The food is outstanding! I had the Duck with Dirty Rice. Cooked to absolute perfection! I enjoy delicious food, well-made, in an upscale but non-pretentious, treat-me-like-a-newfound-friend atmosphere. Clean. So much to praise here, thanks so much for a wonderful time and we will return next time we visit Walla Walla!

Gretchen W.

Yelp
I was visiting Walla Walla with a friend. This was by far our best meal of the trip. We tried a variety of things and each dish was better. Highly recommend eating here.

Amy Y.

Yelp
We came in on a Friday at 7pm with a group of 11. Our waitresses was super friendly and the ambiance was nice which is why I gave them one star. The food was terrible. What I ordered amongst my friends: Cloud 9 Cocktail: 2/5 Three of us ordered this cocktail. The flavor was okay but they came lukewarm which made it hard to finish. All the drinks came out at the same time so my guess was they were sitting out a while before being served. Green Giant Cocktail (substituted tequila with gin): 0/5 I ordered the Green Giant but substituted tequila with gin and asked for it to be made on the sweeter side. The drink came out way too sweet and there was a weird licorice aftertaste which wasn't listed in the description. My guess is that the bartender forgot to properly clean the shaker between drinks. I had to send this one back but the waitress was super nice about it. I ordered a gin and tonic instead and that was good--no licorice taste. Smoked Oysters: 3.5/5 We didn't expected the oysters to be served without the shells but they were enjoyable. The description described them as "smoked oysters" which probably hinted that they came in a can but I wish they were more specific. The bread it came with was really good. Clams: 2/5 The flavors were good but the combo of chorizo and clams didn't work for me. It felt like I was eating a bean and cheese dip with clams. Shrimp and Pepper Pasta: 4/5 This was our favorite dish. Noodles were cooked nicely. Scallops: 0/5 The scallops were cooked perfectly but holy shit, they were sooo salty. I had half a scallop and had to chug my water. My mouth was pulsating afterwards. I couldn't have another bite. My friend asked for some limes to douse the scallops in order to finish them. Our two other two friends also ordered scallops and they had the same comments. Additional comments: One person in our group ordered the steak at $100 and it was undercooked. All the reviews here are great and two friends have came here before for lunch and recommended the restaurant. To say we were all disappointed is an understatement. Our bill was over a thousand dollars. I think they just had a really off night due to the holiday weekend but I'm afraid to come back.

Maxwell B.

Yelp
It was aight. The waitress wasn't aware of the artist Hattaway, who I assumed owned the place. What is love? I ended up getting a steak for $90 and it was pretty dope, but probably more like $43 dope. That being said I just kinda ordered and didn't really pay attention to the menu. I was expecting German techno and buff, shirt less dudes. I felt like it was a private club and me and the old ball and chain (my son) were outsiders. Later I realized it could have been that I was wearing a hat the whole time. Im a 5 star or 1 star kinda guy and this place didn't do anything that offended me or my Christian morals so they get a 5.

Madison P.

Yelp
Delicious food, exceptional service, and lovely ambiance! My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner there and a special champagne treat for my birthday from our fabulous waiter. The pimento cheese appetizer and chicken and grits entree were amazing! Highly recommend!

Christina D.

Yelp
Loved! This place! Great Atmosphere and Lovely Staff! My Braised Beef cheeks were the Best I have ever had. We had a Great time and All 8 Ladies Loved our meals! That's Incredible! Enough said!

Cindy O.

Yelp
Food is good. Service is wonderful. But the restaurant was too noisy and made our meal tense. We ordered quick meals and left. Not the first time here, but I fear it was the same every time. Such a shame. They try so hard.

Wilson A.

Yelp
I recommend this place because it's just good. Nice service - good wine - great dinner and awesome desert- everything was like I was in a big city restaurant but no no I'm in little Walla Walla - which has grown up too. Try the aged ribeye and pork ragu or smoked chicken dirty rice. And don't miss the flourless chocolate torte with real whipped cream . Dam good food here

Philip M.

Yelp
I'm local and I am thrilled with the addition of excellent restaurants here in the last 15-20 years. Hattaways is one of the best in the area. The service staff is likely the best in town. I also appreciate the varied, innovative menu , and that it rotates. In the beginning it was loud , but internal modifications have helped. The fact that it is open on Sunday and Monday gives it a competitive advantage for us locals. I highly recommend Hattaways and pray for its ongoing success.

Keeba O.

Yelp
Food was amazing-started with the smoked oysters, the ragu for the entree and finishing off with the bread pudding. Service by Ana R- she was very pleasant, attentive and funny! Note on the bread pudding: they use Heath bars in lieu of raisins and a bourbon caramel sauce to die for! (Espresso martini was just ok in my opinion.)

Gabriel G.

Yelp
Decent place, extremely friendly staff, and a great atmosphere. I enjoyed the octopus, although it was a bit sweet. Also started off the meal with sweet pickles, very flavourful.

Brian J.

Yelp
Flavors so good and memorable for days! Great knowledge from the help. Outstanding! What a pleasure to have had this experience.

Jamie H.

Yelp
Adorable little restaurant just off the main drag in Walla Walla. My friend & I were lucky to get a reservation (use the Hattaways website) & scored a seat on the patio. Loved the Cajun pickles as a small sweet/spicy bite to start the meal. The steelhead was well cooked & on a bed of sweet corn purée. The chicken & grits was amazing - crispy fried skin, juicy chicken, mild grits (our server was awesome about subbing this instead of the spicy grit cake) & a light cucumber sauce. Really great dish that I'd go back for.

Laura R.

Yelp
Food was spectacular. Server Megan was wonderful. Ambiance was comforting and conducive to great conversation.

Constructive C.

Yelp
Food has been great. Love the celery salad, rock cod fritters, Brussels sprouts and the fried chicken. All our servers have been excellent and attentive. Cozy spot to have a nice dinner.

Kelly N.

Yelp
We had the chicken pate and then for the main course we had the octopus and halibut cheeks. The octopus was so tender and the chimchurri sauce with the mix of vegetables was excellent. Definitely recommend. My son (29) had the halibut cheeks and loved the mix of flavors. What an excellent experience in our travels in southern Washington

Amy H.

Yelp
Amazing food! I had the chicken schnitzel and it was delicious. The ambience was also great, as well as the service.

Steve M.

Yelp
Hattaway's is excellent. The service was excellent, the sweating and ambiance wonderful, and the food perfect. The wine and beer list were also just right. We had a great time, and it was about half the price of the dinner we had at the steak company.

Joel T.

Yelp
Such a great place for food. Dinner was so good and service was amazing too. We got the deep fried chicken schnitzel over grits and the shrimp pasta. Bone marrow to start was amazing. Would love to go back

Michael G.

Yelp
Walla Walla should be proud to have such a culinary delight in their city. We had the corn appetizer, schnitzel (it's deep fried not pan fried) and the duck. All excellent. We did not drink wine or spirits since we had a couple wine tastings under our belt, but they all looked delicious. Our water on the rocks was awesome. Service is very professional. The owners have trained their team well. Support this restaurant. The city needs more upscale dining to match their excellent vineyards.

Mindy P.

Yelp
It seems to be everyone's favorite, but it wasn't mine. Great service. We had reservations, nothing specific, but they sat us on the chilly patio without asking our preference. Drinks were okay. We had some bourbon cocktails from the menu. Nothing amazing. We ordered the BBQ chips, which my husband loved, and the pimento cheese, which was a lot of cheese on a crostini. The heirloom tomato salad was okay. The hand cut fries were worth writing home about and the chicken was tasty. Personally, I thought the food was heavy and okay, but not the quality I was expecting from reviews.

Travis V.

Yelp
Excellent service and food. The bread pudding was fantastic. I really liked the decor and ambiance as well.
