Haus Hirt, Bad Gastein, Austria - Explore & Book

"Bad Gastein was once Austria's go-to spa town of the last century. It has seen many hotels come and go over the years. But Haus Hirt is in a league of its own. This is our kind of place: eclectic design, oodles of style, imaginative decor, a magical Alpine setting, and service that gives a homely feel you can't bear to leave. Evelyn took ownership at the turn of the century. With her architect husband and a band of artisan friends she created 33 beautiful rooms. Strong colour palettes blend perfectly throughout and you can sense a creative energy at work from room to room. There's also an entire spa floor devoted to the kind of rejuvenating treatments the region's famed for – a must for your health, peace and happiness. A myriad of activities are organised all year round, with real love and thoughtfulness: we were keen to hike so they left a rucksack stocked with maps and snacks in our room. You'll be staying Full Board, so a lot less hassle, and the restaurant has one of the world's most romantic dining rooms, with wonderful views across to distant mountain trains weaving along the valley; we felt we could actually be on the Orient Express. People come together from all generations here. Kids are brilliantly looked after, strangers meet, old friends and families gather all in one big jumble. There's something you just can't put your finger on about Haus Hirt. It never fails to charm us. Highs Beautiful living spaces and décor, including a cocktail lounge, library and dining room with alfresco terrace Masses of outdoor pursuits year-round and an Aveda Spa that offers innovative treatments drawn from local thermal springs The ambience: Evelyn and her genuinely friendly staff create a sociable vibe among the mix of couples, families and singles Great rates, which include all delicious meals, twice-daily yoga, guided summer hikes, ski shuttle and kids club for 3-12yrs Stunning views of valley and mountains from most rooms and the restaurant Lows In summer months, you can get some rainy spells – there's a reason it's so green Menus and daily activity boards are in German, but you can ask for English versions or use a translation app The indoor pool isn't massive but children love the dedicated splash time" - Aidan Forestier-Walker

Haus Hirt | Best affordable ski hotels in Europe

"The childhood home of owner Evelyn Ikrath (who, together with her architect husband, also owns the Hotel Miramonte, a short walk away), this 1920s spa hotel has recently undergone a stylish revamp. Despite its slick and elegant interiors (the work of Japanese interior designer Elma Choung), Haus Hirt still manages to feel informal and friendly – children are welcomed. Guests enjoy the library filled with art and design books, and the modest yet sublime Aveda spa. The indoor pool is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, boasting spectacular views of the Bad Gastein valley. " - Nicola Iseard

We loved Haus Hirt. The hotel has a wonderful ambience. It is family run. The decor is unique and adds tons of personality and warmth to the hotel. It's not a 5 star mega all inclusive resort, it's a small, friendly, warm, welcoming and beautiful hotel. Very child friendly, especially for younger kids (<5). Food is superb. We are vegetarian and we were extremely well catered for. The salads every evening were a particular highlight for us. We joined in on the organised hikes most days during our stay. The hotel employs several guides who lead out various hikes on a daily basis. These were challenging at times but really enjoyable. Hiking poles were kindly provided by the hotel. We have very fond memories of our stay in Haus Hirt and can only recommend this hotel.

As three generations of the one family we travelled from Ireland to Haus Hirt. It was well worth the journey. Such a beautiful hotel in an amazing location just magical. Food was excellent. SPA was extremely good and the pool and sauna's we all enjoyed. Several highlights for us the included hikes there was always one difficult for the hardly and a family hike for the rest of us so everyone even a toddler was included. The Guides were great fun and made sure everyone was included. Our grandaughter felt so at home there as she wandered through the restaurant and her favourite the 'library'. The staff were so welcoming especially to children. The included yoga was excellent the teacher was very good. The hotel shuttle was also handy for pick up and drop off to the train station. Also a highlight was the walks right outside the door of the hotel and we could always take an off road buggy at reception for our grandaughter.||We fly into Vienna from Dublin and was a long train ride with a change in Salzburg it would have been easier to fly into Munich and get the direct train from Munich city centre. We stayed in Vienna on the way out and back and have to say what a beautiful city amazing clean and safe. ||Highly recommend this hidden gem in Summer. I have been to Austria for winter but have to say summer is so much better.!!!

Haus Hirt is one of those hotels that you want to tell everyone about, while at the same time keeping it a secret. The views are amazing, the spa is professional and the food was a revelation. The "light lunch" is anything but, and guests are encouraged to pack lunches if they will be on one of the guided hikes or just exploring. Evelyn is lovely and caring and addressed all of our concerns. Haus Hirt was definitely "family-oriented" during our stay (mostly families with mostly younger children) but that only added to the friendly vibe at the place. Both the staff and the other guests could not have been more pleasant, and for your own sake, don't miss the saunas.

If your looking for a family focused active/spa retreat, this one is excellent... Plenty of kids running around, with child care included, the food was very very good (and included) with kids food or kid friendly food at every meal. Staff was super helpful with advice on hikes (they have baby/toddler hiking carriers you can borrow), bike rides and routes (bikes you can borrow for free, and ebikes you can rent),a nice pool for kids to splash around in, and overall great facilities.

Highly recommend. Went in june/July. Hotel is lovely and comfortable with modern comfortable feel . Staff are lovely with a great eye for detail . Food for an all inclusive was the best I've ever gotten with plenty to offer. Loads of activities on offer from hikes , bike rental and local knowledge of things to do and see .

Staying at Haus Hirt is more akin to staying in a friend’s lovely house where the old and the new are blended together in a sophisticated and elegant manner. You are made to feel special where the service is discreet and efficient and the food is plentiful as well as being beautifully presented. The view from the huge glazed walls of the restaurant towards the valley below would be hard to beat anywhere in the world.

We have just come back from a three generation stay at Haus Hirt and it could not have been better. The rooms were all excellent with plenty of space, and perfectly suited to each family. The food was delicious from breakfast to dinner, with masses of fruit and salads, and a place to make a packed lunch if you wanted to go out for the day. Charming staff and hiking guides and great facilities for children. You could go on the guided trips or get advice on doing your own, with very useful shuttle service all included. The atmosphere was altogether generous and relaxed and we would all love to go there again.
