The Best Barbecue and Brewery Pairings in Kansas City, MO - AFAR

"Smokes meats and rib racks over cherry wood for a lighter, slightly sweeter flavor profile; signature items include the Irish Hawg—smoked corned beef, smoked sausage, Swiss, spicy sauerkraut, and Thousand Island on toasted marble rye—and half- or full-rack rib dinners served with sides such as beans, cheesy corn, or smoked mac-and-cheese." - Pete Dulin

This is a great BBQ spot within the metro. I had the brisket sandwich and it didn’t disappoint. There was a really nice wood flavor that was not too strong, but really, really good. The wood flavor was unique to anything I’ve had in KC. The burnt end chili was delicious as well. My wife ordered the sausage and she liked it too. We really enjoyed the food here. Great experience. They serve Pepsi products.

This was one of the first KC BBQ joints I tried and to this day it's one of my favorites. The food is very quality and the prices don't expand the diameter of my corn hole by an inch unlike other BBQ places i know (cough cough Q39 cough cough). I highly believe their burnt end sandwich is a must try. It's so tender and flavorful (that's what she said LOL). I've enjoyed plenty of other things on their menu as well. It's a little out of the way but you won't regret the trip. This place claps

Google
I had the 2 meat combo with the sausage and pulled pork. Side of beans and mac and cheese. The sausage was okay. The pulled pork was really good. Lean and light The mac and cheese was very good and thick. The beans were really sweet, but great. Service was very good. Would not hesitate to come back

1st time here. Was not sure when went in, if we ordered first then brought to a table. ▪︎They have a Ramp to walk up to counter area to order your food. (or there is wooden stairs. Ordering area is set up high. Then the dining area is nestled down below ▪︎ I ordered lunch combo medium: I got brisket & turkey with baked beans. My husband got a lunch combo large: which is half pound of meat. He got brisket & burnt ends with sweet potatoes fries (there is a up charge for sweet potato) The burnt ends where really yummy, large in size, nice and tender, great flavor. Sweet potato fries were good, but very small paper holder ( you don't get enough to share) so beware. My brisket & turkey sandwich was truly good size (Medium Orders you can get 2 Meats). Both had great flavor, tender. They have different sauces at the tables to choice from & plastic silverwear are located there at the tables also. ▪︎ My favorite the baked beans(EVER) the smoke flavor, truly yummy. They do have extra juice on them. So beware you will need to beware not to wear them when eating them. ▪︎Drink refills are up in the area, up the ramp area. To the right of where you order. They even have little towelettes at the table for your convenience. ▪︎There are alot of wooden tables, kind like country, family tables, where you can sit down, and enjoy eating with big groups of family or friends, to enjoy a good meal together. ▪︎I do feel prices would be closer to $18-21 on average per person. ▪︎Do recommend them, yummy barbecue, they are a hidden jem. Everyone is friendly. It was Maria's birthday she was taking care of us.

Google
Phenomenal experience and great food!! I just moved over here from Chicago a few months ago and have been exploring a few local bbq spots in KC and this place was phenomenal. Right when I walked in and the atmosphere was so inviting! The service was great and some other locals from North Kansas City provided some awesome recs! I got the wings that were very good along with the brisket loaded fries that were a little soggy but that could’ve been from waiting too long to eat them. Oh, and get the Heath desert was to die for. I will be bringing family and friends here when they come in town for sure. I can’t wait to come back soon! -Adam

Google
Hawg Jaw never disappoints. I personally love the nachos loaded with pulled pork. Staff is always friendly and you don't have to wait long for the food. The portion sizes are not as large as some other places for the price, but I feel like the amount given is adequate for a standard meal. I will continue to visit when in the area.

Google
Food was pretty good. Friendly staff. I didn’t like them asking for a tip when I ordered and there is not waitress or waiter. You order at the counter and seat yourself and get your own drink. Other than that it was good. I would return and save the tip for the end of if I saw the need to tip for over the top service.

Google
I used to come here a lot a couple years ago I loved their workmans special! It would be enough to save for later with half of my side I usually get the medium with burnt ends and brisket. Lately it seems like they've cut back or just maybe my appetite has increased. I used to raveeeeeee about the Mac and cheese...smokey, gooey and cheesy. The one I received the other day was watery, unseasoned and just bad really. Sides are just as important as the meat to me and every time I've gone the Mac has gotten worse and worse. Hopefully I just have been unlucky. Love the meat though. Just wish I got more than 3 burnt ends.

Yelp
Gourmet Arby's. +ham and pulled pork sandwich had a nice soft bun and didn't need sauce, I couldn't stop eating it. Average brisket and burnt ends. Ribs were a little tough. Sauce is basically fancy Arby's. Beans were alright. Mac and cheese was basically a cheese puck by the time it got to me. Brownie and cookies were good though.

Yelp
I'll be honest, I was not expecting anything much coming here. I was quite pleased with their BBQ. I got brisket and beef burnt ends. I really enjoyed them both. The meat is a classic KC BBQ style meat that you can expect. If you're looking for Texas style BBQ this is not it...this is pure KC classic BBQ. All around decent spot. Am I blown away...no but If I am in the area I'd choose to come back. Hawg Jaw is not a place I'd drive out of my way to come to, but it isn't bad BBQ at all! 6.5/10. Perfect for a lunch that will satisfy your hunger and taste buds!

Yelp
This is one of our favorite BBQ spots in KC! The food has been great every visit. Service is always amazing. The manager, Marla, is amazing! She remember's everyone! Decor is fun BBQ decor. I highly recommend brisket and pulled pork! Fries are a great side, but I'm a big fan of the potato salad. Plus, don't forget to grab some of their very tasty BBQ sauces...Kansolina is our favorite! Next time you are in the mood for some great KC BBQ, give them a try! You will leave happy and with a full belly!

Yelp
On my most recent visit, I ordered online via the website. It was easy and seamless. My order was ready when I arrived and it was accurate. The employee I interacted with was very nice and polite. I started with a large stock sandwich with brisket and smoked sausage. It was definitely large- two meals for me. It was good. The brisket isn't the best in town but it's decent. The smoked sausage was my favorite of the two meats. The bbq sauce was also good. A little sweet. A little vinegary. They really remind me of Wyandotte and Rosedale Bbq. I also ordered several sides. Most were small but they are pretty generous and you could almost get two servings from a small. I ordered one medium size and it was pretty by. I ordered fries. Nothing really stood out about them. There was only one size online but I'd probably opt for something else. I also ordered the fried pickles. I would pass on these in the future. You could definitely taste a spiciness but at the same time, there was no flavor. It was weird. I wasn't a fan of the bbq beans but I'm not normally a fan so take that with a grain of salt. My boyfriend thought they were fine. I also ordered the Mac and cheese. It wasn't creamy. It was very dry but oily. I would pass on this in the future. The cheesy corn was my favorite of all the sides. It had good flavor. My only complaint is that it was so runny. Some additional corn could have definitely been added. I plan to add the corn sauce to the Mac and cheese leftovers. Finally, dessert. They have a redic brownie thing called the Hawg Heaven. It's a crazy brownie with peanut butter and chocolate sauce and candy. It's super rich. Shareable. And it was my favorite thing out of everything we ordered. Highly recommend. I will definitely return but I'll probably try some other offerings. And get another brownie.

Yelp
Amazing BBQ joint in NKC. The atmosphere is perfectly BBQ, wooden tables, BBQ theme decor, and almost a picnic feel. The tables are set with their 3 sauces (regular, spicy, and their take on a Carolina style), plus smoked ketchup. Counter service was fast and friendly. We tried the two meat platter: sliced sausage, burnt ends, Buffalo slaw, burnt end chili, plus Texas toast; and the brisket sandwich, which is my go to on a first visit. Everything was amazing! The brisket was sliced thin, not too thin, and not fatty at all. The burnt end chili was so full of flavor, and the slaw/beans were great. Hawg Jaw is definitely going in our rotation.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the Hawg Trough platter! It was a great way to try the smoked meats! Creamed corn was amazingly smooth and rich. Service was fast and friendly. Good place to catch a game and enjoy the food! And absolutely save room for dessert!!!

Yelp
Love their food! Place is in downtown North Kansas City. Cute little barbecue shop. They have some amazing food and make their own barbecue sauce. Usually order the sampler so it all the meat options to eat from. My family even loves it. A friendly and hard working staff. And a great spot for your barbecue fix.

Yelp
We've made this a stop on the way thru KC for several years, with great experiences except for the last couple of visits, including today (2-2:30). Ordered my usual (brisket, burnt ends) and ordered a turkey sandwich too. Unfortunately the brisket sliced or shaved very thinly was very dry and not what I would expect as a bbq staple. The burnt ends were mostly dry with a rubbery bark. The turkey was dry and chewy. The service was fine and ambiance was normal. I am a big fan of Mammaw's Spicey sauce but would prefer not to use the meat as a delivery system for the sauce. We'll likely be looking for another BBQ spot to visit. Sad to say.

Yelp
The macaroni and cheese might be the best I've had out of at least 15 bbq restaurants in the KC metro area now. It is smoky! It is cheesy! There is even melted cheese on top! There are breadcrumbs! It is penne deliciousness. The burnt ends are large chunks of ideally balanced juicy meat and fat. They're super moist and flavorful on their own and even better with the sweet sauce which is made with molasses and blueberries which gives it a light blueberry flavor. They have smoked ketchup! Must try along with aforementioned blueberry sweet sauce. The cookies were kinda hard and small for a buck each so I opted for a soft fudgy brownie for $2.25. It was very tasty. The only real downside to Hawg Jaw is the brisket. It's the thinly sliced Zarda style kinda dry stuff. There were wee bits of fat strips, but not enough to make the brisket juicy or moist at all whatsoever other than the moisture condensation from being in a to-go tin. I even asked for fatty brisket on the phone. Super bummer, but the burnt ends and sauces are definitely a destination meal for folks in KC!

Yelp
Let's start with the good. Service was great . Guy at the register was very helpful and informative. Place was laid out well and prices were good. The bad-ordered the 2 meat tray. Pulled pork and brisket. Pulled was ok not overly barky or smoky just normal. Brisket had good flavor but was thin and dry telling me it was probably from the day before. This being a Saturday I figured it would be fresh. A little out of the way but I was in the area. Sides were fantastic. Maybe skip the brisket and get something else.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
Some people test a BBQ restaurant by ordering the brisket sandwich or ribs, I test by ordering the burnt ends. To me that is the centerpiece of a good BBQ establishment. I ate here 6-20-25 and ordered the burnt ends with no bread. They were hard, dry and VERY hard to chew. I had to saw them with a knife into smaller pieces so I could begin the work of chewing a single cube for ten minutes. It reminded me of the over-cooked turkey scene from Xmas Vacation. I wouldn't waste your time or money on the burnt ends.
google avatar

Dominic E.

Yelp
The food was pretty tasty, but the smallest portions I've ever seen at a BBQ joint. I got the two meat platter... Very very small portions. Order two meals if you want to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Visiting KC and wanted to try some BBQ! Very cool place, huge mural outside on the wall! We were greeted with a friendly lady saying to come on up and check out the on screen menu. Placed our order and it was brought to our table, very quickly. The people were awesome that worked there. A variety of sauces at the table. And of course the roll of paper towels on the table. One thing I need to say, is they offered Wet Naps.. Every BBQ restaurant should have these available! The pulled pork loaded fries were good, different take on em and nice & saucy. The smoked turkey made me smile, great taste and tender. I love brisket, but this tasted more like roast beef, not bad, just not what I was expecting. Love the smaller spots for a true view of the local scene.

Yelp
Kansas City knows it's BBQ and this place understood the assignment. Located in north Kansas City with a menu full of all of your favorites. Burnt End / Brisket cooked and seasoned to perfection. Chicken so tender it falls off the bone. Ribs super juicy and full of flavor. Sauce choices - variety is the spice of life. Sides were great...but the FRIES. Crispy golden perfection. And the Mac & Cheese with penne noodles. Great spot with that is a part of North Kansas City history.
google avatar

Sam G.

Yelp
All jokes aside, this has to be my favorite bbq spot in the area. From the juiciness of the meat (I ordered brisket, my go to), the variety of sauces, sides, everything....like I can literally go here every other day and not be tired of it. As mentioned, my go to bbq order is brisket and I believe I might have dived into some pulled pork. I can't recall the exact name of the sauce but one of them has the perfect amount of sweetness and smokiness that I look for in a bbq sauce! They also have smoked ketchup which pair fantastically with my side of fries (and I'm not a ketchup fan AT ALL but this was delish). It's first come first service seating, picnic style but most have the courtesy to fall in line and order then find your seat, which was nice! Overall, you'll definitely be seeing me here again very soon!
google avatar

Mel L.

Yelp
Cool hangout spot with lots of seating. Service was good! The lady at the register was patient and polite while making recommendations for us first-timers. The food is sooooo good! Got burnt ends (half-pound), mac and cheese and seasoned fries. Everything was delicious!
google avatar

Denise F.

Yelp
I always get the Hawg Trough sampler and two sides to share. It gives you a sampler of pork, ham, brisket, ribs, turkey and sausage plus a side. I add one extra side and it's plenty for two people. Good smoked meat flavors. Beans are tasty . Everything is well flavored. Service is quick. I love the rustic look of the restaurant.

Hamilton W.

Yelp
First time here and not disappointed at all. Ordered full ribs and two sides of sweet potato fries and potatoe salad. Would come back. Full dining room on a Friday night and to-go orders headed out. All on table BBQ sauces are very good. Some spice with Mamaw's spicy but highly tasty.
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
Located in North KC, you will find a deliciousssss hidden BBQ gem! Delicious brisket, burnt ends, smoked chicken, pulled pork, juicy ribs...do I have you craving BBQ yet?? There are several tasty sides to choose from as well: mac & cheese, BBQ baked beans, burnt end chili, coleslaw, fries, and more! I ordered the two meat, two side combo - burnet ends, brisket, Mac & cheese, and a side of burnt end chili. These are just SOME of the options you can order at Hawg Jaw BBQ! There are plenty of tables inside to sit at, but this is also a popular grab & go spot. Add Hawg Jaw to your KC Bucket List!
google avatar

Xuan Hoai N.

Yelp
They have great options of flavor and food!!!! The service has it ups and downs depending on if they are busy. Atmosphere is alright.

Jenny W.

Yelp
Unique spot! Burnt ends were great!! Turkey, pulled pork and sausage was good and flavorful too. Enjoyed the buffalo coleslaw and burnt end chili! Mac and cheese was just okay, but not terrible. Overall satisfied with the experience, happy customers from Texas You know we know and LOVE our BBQ!
google avatar

Marcia W.

Yelp
We have been dining here for several years. The burnt ends are delicious. You place your order and pay at the counter, then your food is delivered to your table when prepared. The seating is no frills, but adequate for dining. My favorite side is the sweet potato fries.
google avatar

Ralphie S.

Yelp
Hawg Jaw catered a work luncheon last week for my team and did a great job. Marla was easy to work with and gave great recommendations to guide me in pleasing 18 staff members! We ordered brisket, pulled pork, 3 sides, buns, pickles, sauce and utensils for $15 per person. The brisket and slaw were excellent, but the stand out side was the Cheesy Corn. Absolutely the best I've had. One of my staff said it resembled more of a creamy corn bisque and I would agree. Hawg Jaw is not in my top 5 for KC BBQ; but they are a very solid choice and have never served me anything over the past 7 years that I was not completely satisfied with. Meats, sides, catering, cleanliness, friendliness, and value all solid - 5 stars it is.
google avatar

Laurinda C.

Yelp
Don't miss the chance to try this! Food was great and the folks there are soo nice. Yummy!!
google avatar

Cecilia M.

Yelp
The ribs were good and you had your choice of sauces, the whole dinner was great. The service was great our came in a timely manner. I like the ambiance that you ate your food off paper plates, every thing else was on the table.
google avatar

Meli H.

Yelp
I came here for a family thing a few months ago. The people were friendly and it has a whimsical vibe to it. I know some people prefer a "pull" to their ribs, I'm not one of them. The flavor was out of this world; there was some sort of awesome hickory/pecan mix for the smoke, if I'm not mistaken.... But it was delightful!
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
Irish Hawg was great - lived that sandwich - looking forward to coming back so I can trying the dip sandwich before moving on to try the bbq
google avatar

Rob S.

Yelp
Smokey KC BBQ. Just walking in the door you can smell you are in for a treat. They have great sauces if that is your preference. I have worked through the full sample of the main meats and each one is done very well. It doesn't get the same press as the other BBQ joints, but it still has a great local following. And if we eat there for our BBQ, then you should too.
google avatar

Tiffany F.

Yelp
First time here! Sausage, turkey, brisket, creamed corn, tater salad, beans and so much more! I don't have a single criticism of this place. It isn't a big place but they have huge flavors! All the meat was juicy and flavorful. Couple different sauces and a smoked ketchup also. It's excellent, give it a try!
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
Very friendly! We walked in and were greeted with smiles and laughter! We had 4 adults and a 1 year old. I got the Italian hog and couldn't have been happier! We got crispy seasoned fries, beans, and Mac n cheese for sides! All were great! We also got a spud with pulled pork, an order of brisket, and a brisket sandwich. All were very well enjoyed! Love the atmosphere. Feels like an authentic hole-in-the-wall place. 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
They were closing at 8:00pm and we came in at 7:30pm...and you wouldn't have even noticed. I really appreciate that kind of attitude, so that really went a long way. Thanks y'all! They were out of chicken so I didn't get to try their smoked wings, but that's ok. Couple things that set this place apart-1) they smoke their own ketchup (very impressive) and 2) they put the plastic ware AT THE INDIVIDUAL TABLES, not at a centralized location that makes you get up 2-3times because you forgot something.
google avatar

Jill S.

Yelp
Ya'll this BBQ was phenomenal!!! I personally got the Irish Hawg sandwich, and I subbed my fries onion rings. My fiancé got the ribs and they were fall off the bone delicious. My father got the burnt ends and, like the two other dishes were great. The fries and onion rings were fried up hot, fresh, and CRISPY ! They even have smoked ketchup (why has nobody thought of that before??). The staff were very friendly and quick as well. The atmosphere is on point for a great BBQ place. The ladies restrooms were extremely clean and accommodating. The location is a little bit off the dusty trail so to speak (adjacent to the new Outlaw Cigar), but rest assured this place is a hidden gem. We absolutely are going back for the smoked prime rib Fridays.
google avatar

Dan D.

Yelp
The Irish Hawg! What a sandwich! Every bite was a treat. I was told I should try the Italian also, I will, I'll be back!

Rebecca P.

Yelp
We just ordered through a third party. We have never heard of this restaurant. It was AMAZING!! Highly recommend. Very fast and the food was perfect!! Thank you and we look forward to ordering again!!
google avatar

Daniel R.

Yelp
One of my favorite BBQ places in a city that's world renowned for it, Hawg Jaw may not have the immediate name recognition of other places, but the food stands shoulder to shoulder with the best of them. HJ has all the BBQ standards (beef, pulled pork turkey, ham, sausage and burnt ends) that you can get as a small, medium or large sandwich or as a meat choice in a dinner plate. They carry several types of platters as well as some vastly underrated ribs (half or full slabs). Their sides are terrific, especially the fries, cheesy corn and bbq beans. The dining room is one room with plenty of larger tables for big groups. It is VERY popular at lunch and is often crowded but they get you in and out pretty quickly so your boss won't get too mad if you take them some ribs back. Lol ... Plan on spending $15 to $30 a person and trust me, it's worth every penny.
google avatar

Charley B.

Yelp
So, they say the third time is charm, right? Hawg Jaw has moved again. Now they're at 9th & Swift, just across the north side of the Heart of America Bridge near the train tracks. It's a nice clean spot with lots of room. You won't have to worry about pushing any tables together if you bring a group. The barbecue is nice and smoky. There are plenty of options available, especially if you like sandwiches. I don't think you'll go home sad or hungry. I like the burnt ends stock sandwich and the cheesy corn. The ribs are good, too. If you're feeling adventurous then you might try the BBQ nachos and / or the burnt end chili cheese fries.
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Got Hawg jaw with a group of students for dinner. I like that they have various size options on main dishes and sides! I got a small brisket sandwich, per recommendation of the woman working, and the fries. I felt like the brisket didn't have a ton of flavor, but I liked the sauce options! They have one sauce that is sweet and the other two are spicy. The sandwich had ALOT of meat on it, for a small. The fries were delish! They have a rub and they were crispy and fresh. I also loved the smoked ketchup. I would go back for the fries, and would try a different meat.
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
Oh. My. Gaw. I'd have to say this was by far the best burnt ends we had in Kansas City! (And this was also said by my co-worker who had been to nearly 20 locations in the past 2 of his visits). We came on a Thursday afternoon about a month ago, so it wasn't too busy (neither was the brewery next door). It was also located next to some train tracks. Service was quick and prices reasonable. There were plenty of TV's to watch the upcoming Chiefs game on as well. Continuing on our burnt end tasting tour, we ordered a half pound of burnt ends and an order of the burnt end chili cheese fries to split. The large, moist chunks of burnt ends were flavorful and didn't even require the use of their BBQ sauce (but I did anyways). The combination of the questo, sour cream, peppers, and burnt ends was the perfect combination. Our party had also ordered a few beers- we wish we had longer to spend there and order more of the fries, but the next stop on our tour awaited us. 2022 #28

Yelp
This place has a divey type vibe and looks the same inside. The staff was nice and friendly. Lots of good choices on the menu and the smoked Italian sausage did not disappoint. The sauces were tasty also. It made me want to back and try more items on the menu.

Nick D.

Yelp
Not only do they have awesome BBQ, the staff are most friendly and even apologize when they are out of something. Highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. A++ food and staff.
google avatar

Chuck C.

Yelp
Food and service was excellent. I for sure will go back, I had prime rib it was very good.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
Probably not the prime location in Kansas City but the place has to be convenient for people working or living nearby. First, let's say the quality of BBQ in KC sets the bar extremely high and the most coveted locations are already spoken for. So knowing there are a lot of hungry folk that do not want the bells and whistles of tourist BBQ head over to this place. The BBQ is good to excellent depending on what you order and the beer selection is on point. If you want a good BBQ experience and happen upon this locale, check this place out!
google avatar

Yvonne H.

Yelp
I love this place! It always cures my cravings for BBQ and their fries are amazing. It's a quick, efficient place to grab some good BBQ that's tasty & well priced
google avatar

Andy R.

Yelp
Brisket and burnt ends sandwich was mediocre at best. Sauces were very good. Fries were soggy. The service was fine, and the atmosphere was odd, with half the restaurant elevated on a huge indoor deck meant only for queuing and getting drinks, leaving the rest of the inside very cramped when busy.

Kathy H.

Yelp
Fabulous food!!!! Friendly service!!!!! Great atmosphere!!!!! Yum!!! Off the beaten path but well worth the trip!

Rowan W.

Yelp
Food was great, very cute little place. Service was quick and friendly. Kind of a little hole in the wall so you have to know what you're looking for, but all the best BBQ places are.
google avatar

Wes B.

Yelp
Wanted some good Kansas City BBQ as we were passing through town on a road trip. Hog Jaw was just what we were looking for! The smoked meat was delicious, the atmosphere was what you hope for in a BBQ and the people running it were friendly and gracious. I think she undercharged us on purpose because we told her we we're driving our boy home from Army basic training. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
First time to visit and what a great surprise! My date found it on a search and since it was near where we were going later we decided to give it a try. Burnt ends were amazing. Brisket is excellent. Their sausage is very good... sweet potato fries - so good. Honestly - we will be back and when friends family come to visit we will come here.

Sherry P.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and quick service. Reasonable pricing. Has tv's for sport watching. Sandwiches were big and tasty.
