D.C.’s Polished New Brewery Stands Out With a Rare English Ale — And Much More | Eater DC

"A recently opened H Street NE brewpub aims to upend the usual craft-beer warehouse model by offering a warm, midcentury-modern space with low music, no TVs, and comfortable couch nooks and dining tables instead of picnic benches and metal stools. The on-site brewery, run by an award-winning head brewer, balances classic and hard-to-find styles—an English pale ale (ESB) is a noted standout—and launched with a nine-beer lineup (pints $9, halves $5) from a flexible 1,000-barrel production facility that plans to add a pilsner and a gose. Food comes from a real kitchen led by Walfer Hernandez (formerly of Barrel), with elevated pub fare highlights including Old Bay–dusty honey-glazed fried wings and a tender braised beef cheek sandwich with lemon aioli and pickled red onion. A curated wine program is overseen by veteran bartender Monica Lee, and the founders emphasize both brewing quality and a desire to help rejuvenate the surrounding community. The brewpub opened in May at 1335 H Street NE and operates with staggered first- and second-floor hours throughout the week; no reservations are taken." - Travis Mitchell

Google
Such a great new spot! 3 floors with distinctly different feels. 2nd floor has a sleek back section and a wine bar up front (though 2nd floor isn't necessarily always open). They brew a really good beer and most importantly have an actual VARIETY!! The IPAs are delicious, but IPAs are common. These guys brew a sour, Irish red, stout, dubbel, wit, etc! So far all the food we've tried has been fantastic. The fries kick ass and have some ind of amazing dipping sauce. Burger is excellent, as is the fried chicken sandwich and roasted cauliflower. Only thing I could say is maybe they add a TV for football on the roof or 1st floor. I totally understand this isn't the vibe they're necessarily going for... but it would defn help sell beer and food on Sat/Sunday afternoons :)

Google
Wonderful atmosphere, drinks, and dessert! 3 levels with a different vibe on each level. Great in house brewed beer selection aswell as curated wine and cider. The staff was extremely friendly and engaging. Highly recommend!

Google
the word was spread this is a pretty new brewery worth checking out. They make a wide range from grisette to stouts - sadly I wasn't able to try em all but definitely worth checking out. They got some food options too (not sure if always) but just had some food shortly before..

Google
Wonderful place and outstanding atmosphere. Heard someone say “there is something for everyone here”, which I think is a perfect description. Beer brewed on site, excellent wine and food menu. Cocktails and after dinner drinks! The burger and fries were great. There orange brûlée dessert - I can’t think of a dessert I liked more.

During a time when places are shutting down along H Street NE, it's refreshing to see a brewery move into such an iconic corner space. Right next to the historic Atlas Theatre, Henceforth seems small when you first walk in. The bar is stunning and there's seating around it, in front, and behind. The rest of the bottom floor is the actual brewery. Walk up the stairs and you'll be impressed by a front room and a very spacious back room. The design is welcoming. It's definitely a cozy gathering place and great for groups! The staff are passionate and know the menu well. There's a light food menu and of course beer. They sell what they brew from stouts to IPAs. Candidly, I'm not a beer guy outside of sour ale (which they don't have), but their wine list is impressive. I enjoyed my Riesling. I recommend Henceforth as your new community gathering place!

Google
Really glad to see this place open. It’s a proper gathering place. The beer & wine offerings are smart, the food is tasty (I tried the sliders and the fries) and the menu is varied but not overwhelming. I personally can’t get over the volume level of the music. You can hear yourself think and feel comfortable talking —or not talking—with friends or “strangers”.

Google
We had an awesome group rendezvous to include multiple families and teenage kids at Henceforth for a meal and brews. The pils is amazing and the food was just as great. There is plenty of comfortable space for conversation and the service is very attentive. As an example, the server brought my teenager a flavored sparking soda water that they loved. The wings are perfectly prepared and the beef sandwich special was a the right portion size on really great bread. Finally, we all fought over the triple fried fries. I highly recommend wings and fries as an App!

Google
Stopped in on a Monday to this little spot. Being immediately greeted by living room furniture in the entrance is always a welcoming feel to a pub. The downstairs area was a fine spot to enjoy their Alley Beer cream ale and Rising Roads Irish red ale. Checked out the upstairs area, which was empty, but looked like a good place for a hang. Kitchen was closed for the day, so that was a bummer. Zero stickers.

Yelp
As a craft beer enthusiast this place is great! The beers are really good. I had a double hazy IPA, very good flavor and smooth with good hops. The service is great , friendly and knowledgeable. In the 1st floor is the brewery, the craft beer bar and couches in the front. Upstairs is the wine bar. Best part, no TVs. I highly recommend for a date night, client meetings, happy hour or just because. A must try on the legendary H Street in DC!

Yelp
I've been twice now, and I feel confident that this is the friendliest place in DC. The staff are all so friendly and pleasant to be around. The beer is great. Right off the bat, one of the best breweries in DC. The west coast IPA, gose, grisette, and cream ale are stand outs in their category. I had the shrimp and grits for brunch, and it was delicious. The shrimp were perfectly cooked, and the dish was flavorful and beautifully plated. I haven't had wine here yet, but I am familiar with some on the list, and it's a great looking list. An important note as well - if you like going to breweries to study/read/do something quiet, this is the perfect spot. They keep the music low or off and the seating is comfortable. I could take a book here and read all day. Big fan of Henceforth, and I think they deserve all the success. Make it a priority to get there for a visit!

Yelp
H Street gets a bad rap but Henceforth proves the neighborhood still has plenty of life left in it. They fit right in with neighbors Little Grand, Solid State books, Tapori/Daru, Hill Prince, Maketto, Granville Moores, and Copycat, so you have plenty to enjoy before or after coming here. They are located in the old H Street Country Club space, and it's amazing the transformation they gave it. The space is gorgeous. Lots of green, brown, and orange tones give it a chic 70s vibe. I love that there are multiple spaces under one roof. Head up two floors for the roof, where they have happy hour 5-8, even on weekends! You can get $2 off beers, $1 off wines, and they grill hot dogs up there. $10 will get you a pint and a dog, a great deal. The roof is a bit too exposed to the sun, but there are a few seats blocked from its wrath if you're lucky. On floor 2, there is tons of space, with bar seats, tables, and couches. I love a bar that has couches for those days when you just want to grab a snack and read a book with a beer. Floor 1 has a bar and seats as well, with a bit more of a casual vibe, so you will easily find your space. The beers are good. The ESB, one of their specialties, was super smooth with just the right amount of bitterness. The interrobang oatmeal stout was my fave, though. Also sippable with just the right amount of roastiness. For food, we had the chicken sandwich, which comes with a small side of their triple fat fries. The fries satisfied, though they are a bit too thick and potato-y for my taste, a thinner, crispier fry would work better, in my opinion. The sandwich was real nice, though, a big spicy, but with pickles to help cut through it. The chicken was a tad on the chewy side rather and didn't have that crispy skin you want, but still, the flavors were solid. We tried one of the hot dogs upstairs, too, and that was pretty amazing. The space, the vibes, and the beer make this a must visit. We came on a Saturday evening, but during the week, they have a lot of events, such as live music and trivia, and brunch hours feature a Britney brunch. Can't beat that.

Yelp
Went to this new brewery for the first time yesterday, and I am already planning a return! The space is so welcoming, warm, and beautifully decorated. They offer amazing beers (tried their unprecedented times IPA and it was delicious) as well as wine and cocktails! I loved how there was a vibe for everyone - a more chill downstairs brewery and then a lovely wine lounge upstairs. Scott was amazing upstairs and gave us lots of great recs on wine and was so personable - all the staff were so kind! We even met the owner's wife who was so lovely and told us a bit of the story behind the place. Can't wait to come back!!!

Yelp
They're doing great beer in an even greater space. BRING BACK THE CAULIFLOWER! (seriously, so freaking good). The current menu has roasted carrots that were really good, but that cauli....

Yelp
This is the newest brewery in DC. I have been here twice recently with my wife. The beers are quite affordable and very tasty. They also have premium drink and food options we have not yet tried. We had the same bartender both times who was very friendly. The ambiance makes it feel like it is oldest brewery with mid 20th century decor rather than the newest.

Yelp
Clean, inviting, family-friendly atmosphere with delicious bites. My only advice is to add window blinds, as the sun beams directly into patrons' faces, causing glare and making it hard to enjoy a meal--especially when it's reflecting off phones and other surfaces. A simple fix that would make a big difference! Braised Short Ribs: 9/10. The ribs were moist and paired great with the turnip puree. Wish it had a little more sauce on it. Roasted Cauliflower: 10/10. This had an excellent smokey char. Triple Fried Fat Fries: 10/10. These are sooo good! Burger: 9/10. Solid cheeseburger it was just missing ketchup & mustard.

Yelp
Decided to stop by prior to a show at the Atlas theater. Was surprised to discover that they've only been open for a short time. The service was nice. Quick. It's not too big, but they have an upstairs as well and bar seating. The fries were really good.

Yelp
10/10. This is a three level bar that includes two beer bars, a wine bar, and a rooftop. Beautiful mid century modern interior design. The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. They don't sell beer to go yet but everything we tried on draft was great. We ordered the waffles and the crispy potato, little sweet and savory to balance out.

Yelp
This place gets rave reviews but I'm not sure why. I'm not a fan of H Street in general as I feel it had its hey day a few years ago and it was pretty short lived at that. Since I'm within walking distance of Henceforth I decided to check it out since a couple of people I know raved about it. The vibe is meh. There is a small bar on the first floor and a larger bar and section on the second floor. You actually have to walk upstairs to use the restroom which is at the top of a long flight of stairs. The West Coast IPA I had was fine and one of the red wines I had wasn't good. The bar service was great so no issues there. I can't say I'd put this on my list as a place I'd like to return to. I'm glad I checked it out, but it just wasn't for me. To each their own.

Yelp
Met a friend here on Wednesday night, and stumbled onto Trivia night (which is always on Wednesday upstairs). There is also seating downstairs (street level) at the bar and a few tables from what I can remember! It is seating on your own and it gets packed fairly quickly. There is a pretty decent wine list, to include glass and also whole bottles. The Riesling was good-- definitely not the sweetest I've had. There's also a beer list for things on draft if you want beer instead of wine, otherwise no cocktails! There are non-alcoholic options as well. There is a small menu for food-- appetizers, small bites or a few entrees I believe. I tried the fries and they were great! Crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle (they are more like wedges). Looking forward to coming here again!

Kane R.

Yelp
Fantastic food, immaculate people and an unforgettable ambiance. Very difficult to hit in the big three but they have done it with ease. Not to mention they brew in house. Cheers, Henceforth.

Yelp
H Street is SO back baby! Love popping into reinvented spaces (formerly H Street Country Club) and enjoying it even more than the former. Henceforth is straight forward - want good beer or wine? Done! Want a cute bar, relaxing living room or rooftop vibe? You can have it all! It's exactly the space that this area needed. Sadly, the second level was closed off when we visited due to a private event so didn't get to truly experience it all, but worth a visit back. Special mention - they do drag brunch and I hear the food and show is amaZING!
google avatar

Yelp
The waitstaff is beyond amazing and they recommended a speakeasy to my crew, they also have spectacular options for everyone.
google avatar

Yelp
Henceforth is a great new addition to H Street - a large, multi-level bar with plenty of fun seating options. I came for trivia night with a friend and had an absolute blast. Despite it being very busy, the service was attentive and prompt. I had a wonderful orange wine off their wine list and a burger with fries. The fries were especially delicious! I can't wait to come back.

Adrienne N.

Yelp
Thank you Mike, Julie and everyone at Henceforth for your endless hospitality, fabulous energy and for collaborating with artists in the neighborhood/at ATLAS. Love the visionary, fresh and healthy menu options, inspired wine list, Prosecco ! lounge vibe (here's to infusing that magical lighting in all the spaces) and chilled vibe. Impeccable service and mas charm and chill. And there's a rooftop surprise option- and Speakeasy around the corner for after they close.
google avatar

Mike W.

Yelp
Went for trivia night and the upstairs was packed.....glad we got here 30 minutes early. Kinda bummed that the ha e this huge bar and only serve beer.....oh, and canned cocktails that are ick. Food was tasty and the wings are fat. As soon as trivia was over the place emptied completely. Since I'm not much of a beer drinker I really don't think I need to come back.

Yelp
What an oasis on H street! The vibes are that of hanging out at your rich friends house. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable, they know their stuff! The beer was great and brewed in house. The menu is small but covers the bases and is expanding I am told. It's a great place on an H street day to stop in for a calm cool place to relax with friends. Upstairs is spacious!

Susan O.

Yelp
Went for the first time last night. First of all, the place is gorgeous. The aesthetic makes you feel welcome from your first step in the door. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We had dinner and drinks. The beer was very good (especially the Pils and Hazy IPA). The food was also very good. Clever specials. Definitely try the shareable fries!

Klar T.

Yelp
I don't ever leave reviews period but this was absolutely horrible. It was my baby shower and wanted to bring my friends to a chill spot to drink and talk. No one was at the bar, we were the biggest group bringing a lot of business and instead of accommodating us, the GM pestered us every 3 seconds to sit down. He also yelled at my guests for just having a good time. Completely ruined my day. Would never ever recommend this place.

Adam P.

Yelp
Already loved Henceforth for its amazing beer and atmosphere and the food lives up to both! We had the Triple Fried Fat Fries with aioli verde, buffalo and honey old bay wings, Spicy Chicken sandwich, and Braised Short Rib. The roasted garlic Swiss chard and turnip purée with the short rib is one of the best bites I've had this year! The staff were all very attentive and were really hustling too!

Yelp
A must visit kind of place in DC. Just stepping into this place brings up the spirits! Knowledgeable staff who treat guests with care and kindness. The home brew is incredible and wine list so extensive. It's great to see this wonderful addition in DC.

James S.

Yelp
First off. Taking the old H St Country Club and turning the 12K sq ft into an absolutely incredible space that is Henceforth today was no small feat. The layout created is superb, and decor is a comfortably awesome vintage style. Service is top notch and food is excellent. In house wines and brewed beers all top off any time spent within or on the roof deck. You'll be back, as you can't go wrong.

Pia C.

Yelp
The space is an extension of your living room. I was taken back by how welcoming the space is. They have 3 bars and a large patio on the top floor. We had sliders and Austrian red wine which we really enjoyed. Beer is brewed in-house and was also great. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. Music is not pounding, so you can easily have a conversation.

Isaac E.

Yelp
Great Beers, Great kicked back vibes on the first and second floors, Service on the rooftop was fantastic--would be an every week spot if they had a dart board up there!

Kenzie H.

Yelp
Fantastic vibes. The chef for Father's Day was unbelievable. Loved my Father's Day special!!! Can't wait to come back and get the chicken wings and fries
