Best New Restaurants in Philly Right Now | Eater Philly

"The story behind Heng Seng is one of family. The children of the owner of South Philly’s Heng Seng restaurant recently opened a new noodle bar in South Jersey, serving Cambodian classics like soups, noodles, grilled beef skewers, and shrimp tempura. A drinks menu features fresh coffee and beverages like its signature pandan cold foam. It’ll become a go-to for South Jersey residents, and worth a special trip for Philadelphia fans." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

Heng Seng Noodles Opens Cambodian Restaurant in Cherry Hill, New Jersey | Eater Philly

"Opened earlier this month at 1467 Brace Road in Cherry Hill, New Jersey by the three Huong siblings — Sarah, 28, Annie, 26, and Lange, 25 — this new restaurant is meant to carry on the family legacy started by their parents, Anthony Huong and Pouv Song, who have run the original South Philly spot since 1989; the South Philly location is temporarily closed while the parents pitch in to get the new one up and running. When the siblings first proposed opening a coffee shop, their father mentioned he’d always wanted to expand, and Sarah captured the motivation plainly: "I couldn’t imagine a world where my parents had to close down their shop to retire and the food didn’t exist anymore," Sarah said. The response to the new location was immediate and overwhelming — during the first week they were so busy they had to close for a day to prepare for the second week — and, as Sarah put it, "It’s become like a whole reunion," she said. "It’s really magical and so sweet." The menu brings many of the parents’ most popular dishes, including the dry noodles: "Imagine a noodle soup without the soup," she explained. "The noodles have our house special soy sauce with pork and seafood, and then you get a side of soup to slurp alongside." Diners can personalize the dish with an array of condiments. In addition to noodles and soups, the siblings expanded the appetizer selection to include items beloved at the Southeast Asian Market at FDR Park, such as grilled beef skewers, shrimp tempura, and bok lahong — described as a spicy papaya salad with string beans and Thai eggplant. "We’ve been getting a lot of compliments on our papaya salad," Sarah said. "Everyone makes it a little different, but we’ve been hearing that ours is really flavorful because of the fermented fish and crab paste." Leaning into their original coffee-shop idea, they also offer a signature drink menu: "We were inspired byCàphê Roastersand their drink menu," Sarah said. "We’re using their Vietnamese blend." Among the signatures is a pandan coffee with a pandan cold foam the siblings developed. Ultimately, the project is about continuity: "There are so many families who’ve come for generations," Sarah said. "So we were all on board with continuing this family legacy and the tradition of the noodle shop." - Maddy Sweitzer-Lamme

Google
all the noodle dishes that i ordered were so bland. the fish tofu & beef by itself had taste but for watever reason when they cook it w the rest of the ingredients they forgot to season it again? the skewers was the only thing that had taste. pandan coffee was good but it was quite pricey for the small size that was also filled with lots of ice 😩 the service was good though !

Quite the selection for your taste buds. We had the papaya salad and the kitchen special teardrop noodles with shrimp and beef. Ovaltine specialty drink. Selection of seasoning, spice peppers, and sauce at the table were good to make it how you like. This is the kind of place you’d like to try something different each time. Though up against many good restaurants in the plaza, it will hold up well!

Came back and it's even better than before! We were quickly seated; the workers are warm and welcoming. My partner and I ordered 2 of their drink specials, Thai green tea and pandan limeade. I never seen drinks options like these so I was so excited to try and they did not disappoint. The Thai green tea has great flavor, a tad on the sweet side but I tend to like my drinks less sweet. The limeade is perfect for a hot day, super refreshing and not too sweet. For food we ordered A5 Fried bean curd roll, C1 Phnom Penh Style dry noodle, and E5 Lort Cha. They were all cooked to perfection. The noodle dishes are purposely seasoned less for elders and children to enjoy. They're seasonings at each table to customize your dish to your liking. After seasoning the food, it was great! Can't wait to come back and try more of their menu. The restrooms are tidy and the interior is aesthetic.

This place recently opened and after hearing great things about it I had to give it a try. I’ve eaten at the original location in south Philly. This is my first time here. The servers are really friendly and welcoming. The food came out pretty quick. I tried their special drink pandan limeade it’s so good. Very refreshing. When I take my first sip I don’t taste the pandan at first then the flavor hits you. Highly recommend hope they make it a permanent item on the beverage list I would say the soup for my noodle is a bit on the lighter(bland) side. I feel like it’s missing the ground pork that usually comes with this dish. The place is definitely clean and the best part is plenty of parking in the parking lot. Don’t have to look for parking like the south Philly location

Delicious traditional comforting and homey Cambodian dishes! Modern and spacious interior. Ordered apps: fried bean curd rolls and bok lahong (papaya salad - can pick spicy level) Entrees: phnom penh noodle can be dry or soup style, mee katang pan fried noodles, & beef lort cha needle shaped noodles (my favorite very flavorful and not too salty) Drinks: pandan coffee and coconut juice with pandan cold foam. (So good if you are into pandan flavor) I honestly liked all the dishes we got. Food came out quickly. Good service. Parking lot. 4% cash discount, but takes card as well.

Stumbled upon this place by chance and was stoked to find out it served food from my culture. We ordered the Phnom Penh noodles, kaw ko (beef stew), and buk lahong (papaya salad). Cambodian food isn’t always the most approachable—it can be bold, funky, and definitely an acquired taste. That said, my girlfriend (who’s Chinese and generally not too comfortable with Cambodian flavors) really enjoyed everything we had. Everything was super palatable for her, with little to no complaints. The Phnom Penh kuy teav broth was excellent—flavorful and even came with a piece of bone marrow to suck on. My only gripe: it lacked the usual amount of ground pork that traditionally adds texture and complexity. Including more would’ve brought the dish closer to what I grew up with. My girlfriend loved the kaw ko. The beef had a good chew (not the kind that makes your jaw work overtime). I personally found the broth a bit on the sweet side, though that might be because I was still tasting the savoriness of the kuy teav. Then came the buk lahong. Objectively, it was a good papaya salad—bright, fresh, spicy. But to me, it leaned closer to the Thai style than a traditional Cambodian one. Granted, every family makes theirs differently, but the version I’m used to hits with a pungent, punchy flavor that can be intense if you’re not expecting it. This one was definitely toned down. And I get it. Cambodian cuisine can be intimidating, and Heng Seng seems to be playing it safe—probably aiming to appeal to a broader crowd. The result is dishes that are tasty and accessible, but not quite as bold or traditional. If you’re looking for that deep, unapologetic Cambodian flavor, you might have better luck calling up your auntie—or better yet, asking a Cambodian grandma for her recipe and making it at home. Great experience! Cute place. Awesome server. Eevee was super helpful (and has a cool name lol). The pandan coffee she recommended to us was comfortingly robust. We’ll definitely be coming back here if we’re in the area. P.S. - The papaya salad came after our main entrees. Personally we don’t care, but I know others do care pretty passionately! Just thought it’d be some valuable feedback.

We enjoyed the entrees and the noodle bowls are a nice size. The stirfry was also tasty. We liked the beed skewers but didn't love the other appetizers we got. Friendly service and drinks were also delicious.

The restaurant is very beautifully designed. It’s very spacious, with a japandi style interior. The menu offers Cambodian meals, like noodles, dry noodle, and fried rice with options of different meat. The flavors were amazing and I can’t wait to go back to try more.

Yelp
So first up, if you're into Philly/NJ hidden gems, you have to follow JL Jupiter on YouTube, he had an amazing episode about this location and got us to want to try it. Second of all, GPS originally said it would be an hour and a half drive from where we live. WHen we got in to leave this morning, it was at 2 hours, all said and done with all the weather, construction, traffic, it took 2 hours and 40 minutes. I was in a pretty bad mood going into this restaurant but I will say things changed quickly. Service was amazing and fast. We had water and our appetizers before we could even use the restrooms and wash our hands. We went with the fried dough and papaya salad. The fried dough is not sweet, it's more savory, and there appeared to be nothing special about it but we both couldn't stop eating it! The papaya salad, it was not for us. The fish sauce was super heavy and we didn't' taste a lot of papaya, but it had great potential just did not meet what we were looking for (hey you can't like EVERYTHING). The meals came out super fast as well. She opted for the dry noodles (C1 on the menu) and I opted for the soup (B1 on the menu). Similar ingredients but entirely different presentation. The dry noodles were something I look forward to having next time as the adding your own layers of spice and liquid as you eat is something that seemed really awesome. As for my soup, The Phnom Penh Style. I'm going to say I love pho and I love ramen. This was a similar yet much more satisfying experience. The pork broth was outstanding, the shrimp were tender and delicious, all the organ meats were cooked amazing as well. We had a similar problem with traffic going home and I kept thinking about how satisfying and filling it was. On the table they had these pickled peppers which I also highly recommend trying, they added a nice spicy sour punch to the bites! You also had hoisin, sriracha, seasoning sauce and chili oil available to use as well. The service , as I said before was outstanding, everyone stopped by to check on you and we never needed to ask for anything. Even though the papaya salad wasn't' really our style, we still ate most of it, the fried dough was outstanding and both main dishes were exceptional. The restaurant was very minimally decorated but done nicely and not overdone. The owner was walking around talking to his regulars so you really got the feel that this was a neighborhood spot! If we lived closer we would be here weekly, but at a 2.5 hour possible drive time, it's still something we will do. When we were talking about the meal there were a lot of "next time I'm ordering this" type of comments as we want to try more Cambodian cuisine, something that does not exist where we live unfortunately. Long story short, we drove 7 hours round trip (shopped the Asian market in the parking lot and stopped a brewery on the way home) for lunch... and we're talking about doing it again.

Yelp
This was our first time having Cambodian food, and visited Heng Seng based on a recommendation. We live about 60 miles away so we hoped it would be worth it. We arrived so hungry after having been stuck in traffic for over two hours. We were greeted and seated immediately. The waiter came over for our drinks then appetizers. We knew we wanted the fried dough and papaya salad. We ordered those immediately hoping they would come soon. I then asked our server about the meal options since we had never had Cambodian food. Dang was extremely helpful, answered our questions and made recommendations. Soon after that a plate of piping hot fried dough came out (it was so fast but so fresh!). I wasn't sure what to expect but my only regret is we split one - I could have had an order myself. It was slightly salty slightly savory and so good! I recommend one order per person. The papaya salad was good but too spicy for me. We ordered a 3 out of five and I would need a 1 or 2. It very fish sauce forward. Next time I will probably try a different appetizer. I ordered a "C1-small size". This is the dry noodle bowl with a variety of pork and seafood. It was amazing! I was stuffed after eating the small. The bowl comes with a delicious sauce on the bottom, tons of protein and noodles, and a side of broth. I liked that it wasn't soup and that I could add liquid to my liking. The shrimp in particular were so tender and not over cooked! The pork pieces were delicious. I'm not a fan of organ meat so I concentrated on the other pieces. There was fresh cilantro, a side of bean sprouts, and additional sauces on the table. The seasoning and hoisin were good but honestly it was flavorful enough on its own. Despite the fact that it took us 2.5 hours in traffic we will go back! I highly recommend you give Heng Seng a try!

Yelp
Finally got the chance to come try this spot out and I'm so happy I did. Place is very nicely decorated and clean. Service was excellent. Servers were very attentive and nice. Food was very good, definitely want to come back and try out other food on the menu. Had their entree special with the beef stew and noodles. Ordered beef skewers as well and they were both delicious. For drinks, you must order the pandan coffee with coconut foam on top. That was so good and would definitely come back for that. They also had a pandan limeade as part of their special and that was pretty good as well. Highly recommend this spot and I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
All the food is super flavorful and fresh - from the papaya salad to dry noodle to congee, it is clear there is an intentional balance between acid, heat, and salt. The dry noodle and congee (Phnom Penh sytle) have organ meats like pork liver and lung which adds a funk to the dishes although that is traditional. Prices are reasonable, maybe a little on the high side, and the dining atmosphere is comfortable. The pickled chiles with vinegar on the side - a little goes a long way!

Yelp
Super cute interior. Restaurant is located in a plaza so plenty of parking spots. Food was good, reasonable prices, and decent size for food. If you're hungry and can eat a lot - just order L plate. Service was good but we felt very rushed. Once we sat down, the server came and asked if we're ready to order .. it was 2 mins since we sat and still settling down. Then, he came back again but we're still looking since it's everyone's first time and we didn't know what to order. When we got our food, he came over multiple times to check on us which was nice but a bit too much then asked if we needed to pack up. Not everyone was done eating yet. Will travel and come back to try other dishes/drinks but just felt rushed while eating.

Yelp
The menu is simple. Price seems a bit high considering we paid $13 for an appetizer/fried bean cure roll which came out to be 5 little pieces of tofu. Really sad looking. The noodle soup is not bad but the lort cha were bland. Not much meat in them. Definitely need to work on the portion, I feel like we are paying more for the atmosphere.

Yelp
New to cherry hill and a must try!!! We loved everything we ordered and even my Asian mom was impressed and she hates eating out. All the drinks are delicious and so pretty. The beef skewers, bean curd, and papaya salad are must try. Their Cambodian like pho noodle soup was different and good. Dry noodles and egg fried noodle you choose the style/ toppings. Inside was clean spacious and service was absolutely amazing. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
So this place opened in Cherry Hill so I decided to try it while I was in South Jersey, new place, very clean, the waitress was very, very nice and the food was delicious. For the appetizers we did A3. Ba's Crispy Shrimp Tempura and A4. Grilled Beef Skewers. They were both very good. I did the soup KUY TEAV (NOODLE SOUP) B1. Phnom Penh Style. It was very good, not too much salt so I added a little and some good chili to spice it up. I also did half thin rice and half thin egg noodles.

Yelp
Grand Opening and waited 45 minutes to be seated. Services were great. Kathiew was good (okay). Ambiance was simple, nice and clean.

Yelp
Great fresh food, clean restaurant, friendly knowledgeable staff. I came for their soft opening and the food was excellent. I had Phnom Penh noodle soup with pork bone, sliced pork, organ meat, squid, and fish cake slices. The broth tasted light and clean, I just add a bit more fish sauce and pickled green chilli for more umami flavor. The meats tasted fresh and I especially liked the soft bouncy squid. The star of the meal was my pandan coffee drink with coconut foam. So many layers of flavors but they all go together and it's very refreshing, not too sweet ! Loved the beef skewers with picked carrots and daikon. Very moist and soft. I've had it at other Cambodian restaurants as well as FDR park in South Philly, and they were kinda tough and dry. This place does their skewers very well. Probably better quality beef. Marinade really permeated the meat. Stir fried flat noodle was ok. It has a krilly taste like Taiwanese BBQ sauce. I didn't like the Bok La Hong salad as much though. It has a bit of a fishy taste to me. I do like funky authentic Bok La Hong (like at FDR park or Sophie's Kitchen). But somehow this salad was not good to me this day. Perhaps they will tweak it in the future. If you have mild American taste this will not be your dish lol. FYI I have pretty adventurous palate for authentic ethnic foods and I still didn't like it for now. Overall it was still an amazing experience and I'm glad to have a Cambodian addition to our Cherryhill food scene. Will definitely be back

Yelp
What a great place for noodles and the staff is outstanding. The rice dish with the beef cubes was very tender and the beef skewers are the best.

Jason L.

Yelp
The food is as amazing as the original location. You cannot get more authentic Cambodian food than this. The atmosphere is amazing as well. I was able to enjoy the food with my family. Not to mention my children loved the noodle soup. The staff are amazing as well. They check in to see how the food is. I highly recommend coming here especially if the south Philly location has no parking.

Chip S.

Yelp
What a pleasant surprise. Never expected to find top notch Cambodian food in Cherry Hill. Super friendly staff. Big portions and authentic meals in an open, well appointed dining room. A+++

Yelp
Very good food with very sweet staff. The pandam coffee with foam is a must have. Will definitely come back again!

Yelp
Food was amazing. I had the dry noodle and it was full of flavor! My husband had the noodle soup, he was pleased with the taste and portion. My kids had the congee, spring rolls & fried dough. All was great. We all shared papaya salad and beef skewers. I will definitely return!

Yelp
Rating 5 for excellent service, 4 for atmosphere, and the food rating is 3. As soon as I heard about this place's opening, I couldn't wait to visit. I'm giving 3 on the food as it was mediocre, however, I hope the owner/chef takes this review seriously. Papaya salad tasted a bit more fermented crab. I like fishy, salty food, but this was too intense. Beef on the stick marinated was overwhelmed with lemon grass, and don't care for it. My friend ordered seafood dry noodle, and mine was seafood and meat and we both enjoyed it. Since it was dry noodles, which were served with a side of bone broth, which was too salty, I sent it back to adjust the salt, but it still came back salty. I'm very familiar with SE Asia food, Maybe my palate was off that day, who knows, I sincerely wanted this place to be successful and thrive. The plan to visit again soon, I will try different items on the menu, and hope I can give a higher rating, and revise/update this review.

Mikey R.

Yelp
