The Best Restaurants and Bars in the Columbia River Gorge | Eater Portland

"This White Salmon spot is an eclectic gem: Berbere-rubbed beef skewers arrive alongside house kimchi, black mussels steam in a coconut saffron broth, and cedar plank salmon gets a citrusy brightness from sorrel and preserved lemon. Chef Christiaan Erasmus sources from Oregon and Washington farms, with a focus on organic and sustainable ingredients. Pair your meal with a creative full-proof or low ABV cocktail, or peruse the wine list with a nice range of bottles from the surrounding Gorge wineries, along with French and Italian selections." - Molly Allen

Google
Small town. Big win. Loved everything about this restaurant. Excellent service and atmosphere, to die for warm focaccia fresh from the oven, fantastic food choices and all was excellent hence the rating. Our group enjoyed the focaccia appetizer, shishito peppers, Calamari, burger and salmon. Dessert was worth indulging in. Must go.

Google
Everything was so delicious and we were served very quickly. The focaccia, calamari were soooo good! And we had rock fish for main course. Highly recommend!

Google
All the food was fantastic and had a delicious creative cocktail. Really friendly place with great staff and a mix of locals and tourists.

Google
My husband and I were visiting White Salmon and this restaurant came highly recommended. The staff were all exceptionally friendly & helpful. The menu was interesting and exciting. We started with steamed muscles. They were outstanding. I had a burger (no bun, which was my request) and my husband had steak. Our food was fantastic…fresh and simple but beautifully plated & the quality was obvious upon the first bite. I had one of their mock-tails which was as delicious as it was unique. For dessert we shared the red velvet donut bites in a delicious sauce, made fresh. A very memorable meal, can’t wait to return.

Google
The atmosphere was inviting and solidifying reservations was prompt and easy! The drinks were really good and the food was delicious; it was so nice having food options that weren't deep fried! The service was warm and responsive. It was so cool that some of the ingredients they use were clipped right from the gardens in front of the restaurant! Highly reccommend.

Great food, fun location, excellent service!

Google
Not sure what happened, but this isn’t the Henni’s it once was. The food was overpriced and poorly cooked which, in the gorge, can be forgiven… however having to wait for an hour for it started to feel insulting. Add in the snotty waitress and it made for an overall bad experience.

Colton Smith

Google
Ben, their bartender, is the best thing that has happened to Henni’s. He is very knowledgable, keeps a pep in his step, and is very intuitive with his guests. If Ben is your server/bartender, you are in for a beautiful experience. Thanks for everything, Ben!

Yelp
We've been in the Gorge for 2 weeks now, this was our best meal so far. We were going to sit outside, but too noisy with all the traffic. Interior is nicely decorated, we sat in a booth. I didn't get photos of our starters, but they were great - try the fermented vegetables. The goat cheese and chutney with focaccia was excellent, the cheese wasn't overly "goaty". We had the rockfish (pictured), and I really liked the light crispy outside of the fish and the nice tapenade. Not sure I remember the name of the desert, but whatever it was...we thought it was going to be too much for 2 people, but we ended up licking the plate clean. Wow. Service was very friendly and helpful - they had good recommendations too. A delightful evening was had by all. We'll be back for an encore.

Yelp
Very over priced. The food is fine but they haven't changed up the menu in years. Service is hit or miss

Yelp
Nice place with nice decor. Very good food. We had a large party, so we ordered lots of different appetizers, drinks and mains. It was all very good! I got the salmon and it was of the best tasting salmon I have ever had, unique flavoring and uniquely cooked. So good! Only reason star was deducted was for the very slow service. We came in middle of week, so the place was pretty dead and so service should have been faster. Would def come back tho.

Yelp
If you're ever out in the Hood River/White Salmon area, please try this restaurant! We ordered the mussels, steak, calamari, and peri peri wings. The standout stars for me were the absolutely delicious mussels with coconut saffron broth and the peri peri wings. The broth is so flavourful and unlike anything I have had before with mussels. The peri peri seasoning and sauce on the wings is 100% finger-lickin' good! Service was also excellent and quick. Definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Went in with my wife and sat at the bar. We were planning on having dinner and of course a few cocktails to start. I asked the bartender a few questions about how he made a particular drink; his response was less than professional. He made a sarcastic comment and put a bottle on the counter in front of me and said "with this", and walked away. We are frequent diners in the area and have enjoyed this restaurant in the past; however, we decided to leave without ordering because we felt the experience would not be enjoyable due to how rude the bartender was. We will likely go back in the future, but it will be a while before we do. Maybe the bartender will learn to appreciate the importance of his clientele soon.

Yelp
The food was amazing the service was top notch!! The humus was perfect and the salad was delicious. Cocktails were interesting and delicious. Just Go!!

Sharon P.

Yelp
Overpriced. The menu is somewhat interesting but so overpriced. $23 for a hamburger in White Salmon is just ridiculous. Some of the small plates are good but you end up spending way too much on a meal here compared to other restaurants here or in Hood River. It's just not worth the price you pay. Wait staff are rude. Manager was rude. Just go elsewhere.
google avatar

Emily R.

Yelp
A+ customer service! We had a rather large large group and a couple of members had too much to drink and we're a bit rude to our waiter and restaurant manager, this was of course rather embarrassing for the rest of the group. Despite the rudeness, we were taken care of with incredible kindness. I implore you to try the golden beet salad, it was so delicious, and I can't stand purple beets! My burger was a little over cooked, but pretty tasty! Ambiance is very cool, love the wall paper and overall style.

Yelp
This place is such a gem! They have the best salmon we have ever tasted. They said it was made by soaking a plank of wood in water and putting it on top of the salmon on the grill. It was divine! My drink was also delicious! The vibe of this place is comfortable but high-end, like a craft cocktail bar. Loved it!

Yelp
For our 27th anniversary we took the recommendation of a neighbor and are glad we did. We were immediately seated at one of the charming copper-topped tables by the window looking out on the Xmas-lit main street. The real candle was a nice touch, and I warmed my hands on it. We ordered the grilled cauliflower, gnocchi, and a caesar salad. All were rich and flavorful. Our waitress was attentive and helpful, brought a second wine to taste unasked after my sweetheart rejected the first, and we ordered a glass, which went great with the gnocchi. The caesar was unlike any I have had before, a bit heavily dressed for my taste but so flavorful with fresh, tasty croutons; I ordered foccaccia after my first bites to contrast with the intense flavors. The gnocchi likewise was full of deep, complex flavors, the lemon being a genius touch. The cauliflower was very nice, but less interesting than the other dishes, and the goat cheese-plumsauce-pistachio accompaniment to the foccacia didn't do much for me. But what was good was so good! The dessert menu looked marvelous, but we were too full. We will look forward to sweets with our next Henni's meal.

Yelp
Best food ever, it was delicious well be eating there again for sure the service was amazing, drinks where delicious, the ambiance was perfect five stares

Yelp
This place was recommended from our host in Carson. The little restaurant fills up fast and quite a unique little restaurant for fine dining that would seem hard to find out in the mountains. My steak was cooked to perfects and the sides were just as delicious as the steak. The blue cheese dressing on the greens were so refreshing!

Yelp
My husband and I moved from a trendy area of Portland, OR to quaint little White Salmon, WA about 18 months ago. We were already fans of Everybody's Brewery, but had zero experience with any of the small restaurants along Jewett. We finally went to Henni's after reading some reviews and we were blown away! It rivals any steakhouse in Portland, and it's way more laid back. The menu is fun, familiar but with a few surprises. The staff is excellent, engaging and fun to talk to. The wine list is a good size that was obviously well thought out by someone who loves wine. It is now our favorite dinner spot, and the restaurant we always take friends and family to when they're visiting.
google avatar

Robin T.

Yelp
I really like the happy hour at Henni's and the people have always been great. The only area I'd love to see them improve is the overuse of their outdoor heaters. I understand wanting to get additional business by enticing people to sit under the warm heaters, but on multiple occasions I have seen the heaters on with nobody under them or on a nice day. To me this is very wasteful. I'm very concerned about the climate crisis and spewing carbon into the atmosphere that will impact us and our children for years to come. I would love them to think more about the environment and when the heaters are truly needed, versus having them on as the default.

Jay D.

Yelp
Fantastic! Great food, service, & local wine. Try the burger! Five star. Local, small-town and perfect.
google avatar

Yelp
A widely varied and tasty menu is complimented by interesting beer selections. Service is attentive while unobtrusive. Eat and drink outside to add Oregon to your meal.

Dawnyel L.

Yelp
The ambiance is spot on. Nice dinner music, cozy booth seating and relaxed atmosphere. Very attentive and friendly staff. The food surpassed my expectations. The presentation, and how well the dishes were prepared made it a delightful experience. Well done!

Yelp
Incredible from start to finish. We went on a Friday night and had a delightful experience. The service was welcoming and helpful from the hostess, our waitress, the owner. The ambiance was warm and and comfortable. And the food, oh yes, the food: oh so good. Each dish was so unique and delicious in its own way - it was so difficult to choose, so we ordered a LOT... and ate it all! Great veggie dish options with complex flavors and textures and the meat/fish options all looked pretty incredible- I had the pork chop that was a tad dry but the buttery drizzle on top compensated well. Definitely trying one of their steak options next time. Lastly the desert was perfectly balanced on sweetness and surprisingly light. And don't overlook the sauces or crispy potatoes - best I've ever had. The overall experience feels sufficiently classy without being stuffy - definitely our new favorite date night spot. We live in the area so we are so glad to have a new world-class eatery - don't know how it took us so long to try it. Bravo Henni's!

Meagan B.

Yelp
Food: The beets were delicious and unique flavors that I've never had before. Definitely worth trying. The mussels with the saffron broth were another appetizer and so good. We used the bread to eat the leftover broth and could've eaten more. Our favorite thing we ordered from the night. The pork chop with gnocchi was also delicious and very filling. The gnocchi was the ultimate comfort food without feeling too heavy. I would recommend coming here and making a reservation.

PL P.

Yelp
Very limited menu and not many options for vegetarian diners. Was there for a birthday party dinner and ended up with a salad as my only option. I would have considered chicken (they were out), seafood or fish, but none on the menu. Chef needs to seriously expand the menu. Salad was ok, but unsatisfying experience.

Yelp
We have moved to the Portland area and I hadn't been here in 1.5 to 2 years. This is my after rafting go-to place. They were able to immediately seat our party of 7. The waitress was harried as they had a computer issue that had to be resolved and agreed to honor the happy hour menu. Excellent. Bad news is she would be a few minutes before she could wait on us. That's reasonable enough. The shocker is EVERY ONE OF MY FAVORITE GO TO DISHES IS NO LONGER ON THE MENU OR HAPPY HOUR MENU. The menu now consists of burgers, fish and chips, pasta dishes or peculiar dishes of pickles or kale. Must be trying to cater to a few of the vegetarians out there. A menu change is unavoidable but they took their savory fusions and went normal. Are they competing with the burger joint across the street? I ordered the bacon blue cheese burger and fries. My husband had the happy hour fish taco and a pork dish of some sort. He kept having to salt the pork dish. His fish taco dripped down his arm with the mild flavored sauce. My burger was acceptable, the fries were wicked salty. My friend had a happy hour burger which she did not care for, truffle fries were tasty but very oily. She loved the calamari. Margarita was good. The drink special was a huckleberry daiquiri which I would actually correct to say it was a huckleberry martini. Very different expectation. Henni's please bring back your divine curry dishes, your tater tots, your old menu was amazing and unique. This menu is just bar food and I'll just cross the street for that. I am changing my rating due to slow and stressed service, a 20% gratuity for a large party was too high for such slow service and most places would do 18% which would have been appropriate for the slow service and meal arrival, the food was sub par for what was offered. For the waitress response when I said I missed the old menu of "well you should find the owner and tell her what you think because they won't listen to me". Well tell me why you didn't send her over to me? Why do I need to hunt the owner down? If I hear that the menu has changed I'll come back and try it. For now, I'll head over to Hood River for food.

Yelp
Excellent food and friendly staff. We had the salmon fritters, Ribeye and donuts for dessert. All was delicious.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We stopped in for a HH respite from the heatwave rolling through the Northwest. We had a couple of cocktails and shared the Calamari (just ok) and the crispy pork (excellent) along with a couple of cocktails. The bartender really did a nice job on the cocktails. The Negroni Superior was particularly tasty.
google avatar

Tim O.

Yelp
We are regulars at Henni's, and love the innovative food and wine list. Great cocktails, nice outside seating, and the service is always top notch.
google avatar

Lindsy P.

Yelp
The food and atmosphere was amazing! We sat outside and the heaters were perfect. Two of my friends wanted a drink that was not on the menu and the bartender was not only happy to make something for them, but he came out personally to deliver it and tell us what he made.

Jack L.

Yelp
Was there night before Columbia Gorge Marathon. Absolutely delightful dining experience. Entrees made in house and can taste the love and care that went into preparation. Had the pork chop and wife had the salmon. Will definitely revisit next time in town
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Not a great experience! Given the pricing, we anticipated a great and tasty meal. We ordered the sirloin steak and Goan chicken curry. Neither was particularly great. The steak was served cold and had to be sent back. It was also very tough and honestly, quite tasteless. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper which is not a good sign for a $27 steak. The curry would have been better had there been a little more sauce in the bowl as it was quite dry for a curry. The server was a nice guy just not very attentive. I.e. we had to flag him down and request refills. He also came back twice and asked if we wanted dessert. Not sure if he was overwhelmed or if waiting tables is not his calling. I am not usually a complainer but this was unfortunately not a compelling experience.
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
We had a memorable meal here last night (10/16/2021). From the cocktails to wings to the steak, there was not a dish in our party of five that wasn't amazing. The lamb, burger, and fried potatoes were as good as I have had in recent memory. The service was also friendly, professional, and laid back at the same time. It will be tough to have dinner anywhere else in the Gorge, which is saying a lot.
google avatar

Dawn S.

Yelp
Fantastic location in White Salmon, friendly staff and amazing food. Best burger I have had in a long time. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Ronn J.

Yelp
I was really impressed with this restaurant. Our party of four had three different items, all of which were perfectly prepared with interesting sides. Spatchcock chicken with a tangy, hot chili sauce, housemade pickles, and crispy smashed potatoes; two dinners of Teres Major Steak with a romesco sauce and same potatoes; a starter, Tombo Tuna, seared rare. Three Caesar salads with tons of flavor and a delicious House salad with pickled whole garlic cloves. Nice selection of wines by the glass, including a Langhe Nebbiolo, and a dessert wine from Hungary, Tokaji Aszu. Highly recommended; great staff.

Yelp
Hiked Dog Mountain today and were looking for a 'splurge' meal to treat ourselves after a big hike. First impression was Kool and the Gang blaring 'Celebration' way too loud through an empty restaurant. We were seated quickly by a server who seemed hesitant and unsure but pleasant. BF ordered the special, a whole trout which came with a salad. It was a very small fish and it was quite bland. The salad was small and uninteresting. It was not a filling meal. I ordered the sirloin steak. 10 ounces of tough, chewy meat that was under-seasoned and not awesome. Smashed potatoes were also un-seasoned. The mushrooms were delicious however. Still would have rather had 5 ounces of tender yummy steak than 10 ounces of chewy steak. We didn't stay for dessert - just disappointed.

Steve M.

Yelp
Really great place Their vegan dinner main- cauliflower with green tahini sauce with a side of runner beans and chestnut Mushrooms was outstanding As an omnivore I really appreciate creative veggi dishes We also split the ribeye which was perfectly cooked and very flavorful Great service Great advice on wine Lovely setting Remarkable place

Yelp
Very much a place to have on your list if you are in the area. 1. Service is excellent. Staff is well trained with prompt answers to any questions you have on the menu. 2. Our portions were very generous. During happy hour you can easily make a meal of the appetizers. 3. The beer and wine selection are sound. They have some very interesting cocktails. 4. The atmosphere is bright, clean and inviting. 5. Parking is pretty easy to find on the side streets. Friday night is surprisingly busy in the booming White Salmon metropolis of 2500 residents.

Frank L.

Yelp
This was our second time there. The food and wait person were great. One huge disappointment was the manager. Our appetizers, a beet salad, and potato gnocchi were very good. The lemon added to the gnocchi, peas, squash dish was inspired. I told the wait person it was genius. We ordered Chicken Peri Peri and the Teres Major steak. This is where our evening took a big downturn. The steak was delivered medium when we had ordered medium rare. We were informed that to replace it would be half an hour! The manager had lame excuses about orders ahead of the replacement, room on the grill, 2 people working in the kitchen, throwing the waiter under the bus. I have never had a restaurant not rush a new dish if something is wrong with what was delivered to the table. You push back another order or offer a replacement that is quick. Many ways to solve the problem. A real shame since the food is very good and except for the manager on July 14, 2022 the staff was excellent.
google avatar

Tami W.

Yelp
Nice place to eat. Good atmosphere. I had fresh mussels and the house salad. Celiac husband had the yellow curry without issue. Menu is marked for GF options. Be sure to have your server notify if need for gluten-free due to allergy!
google avatar

Connie A.

Yelp
Excellent excellent fish and chips! Delicious batter and skinny tasty fries! Service was good!

Cathy V.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the service and the ambience at Henni's. We celebrated our anniversary with a hearty hamburger and the lamb with gnocchi. Both were delicious, even though they were a little salty for us. The price was reasonable for the meal.

Janeen B.

Yelp
Do no go here if you have any type of dietary restrictions! I wanted to like Henni's. I simply can NOT recommend. Serious miscommunication between kitchen, waitstaff and management. Perhaps primadonna chef. Who knows. Difficult to say the least.
google avatar

Paula P.

Yelp
As much as I completely understand the strain restaurants have gone through during the pandemic I must say that patrons like myself are thrilled to be out there giving back and supporting restaurants such as Henni's. We were staying in the area and our Airbnb hosts suggested Henni's to us so we were thrilled when I had already made a reservation to eat there. Our reservation was delayed almost an hour, we were flexible and said we were fine to wait. Got seated and out wine steward took so long to get our table, but advised a good wine and we were delighted with it, our dinner followed so we were probably seated now 30 minutes, the meal was very tasty, beautiful steaks and wine. I was appalled however, when presented with our bill and paid , they told us if we could kindly finish up as they had needed our table, and that there was an hour limit! So dissatisfied, left an awful taste in our mouths after a wonderful meal. Never have I ever had that happen, we gulped our wine and left. Such a shame on them. Maybe tell your guests when they're seated , before they spend $150 that there is a time limit!

D F.

Yelp
Henni's recently reopened after a new revamping. Very disappointing. The menu is very limited now and has super high end prices. Cauliflower steak for $27, seriously !!! Gone is the uniquness and variety from before. Honestly we had a hard time finding anything that appealed to us, there just wasn't that much to choose from,,,and they say they don't plan to change the menu. My husband got a hamburger. The food seemed good,, but the locals will get bored really quick and locals are who will keep the place going in the slow months. We think they need to rethink their approach We used to go to Henni's a lot, but unless they start changing the menu around and offer some variety, we probably won't go back,,what's the point. Sorry Henni's

Jimmy L.

Yelp
If you're seeking unattentive waitstaff, incredibly slow kitchen service, and high prices for tiny portions of poorly seasoned and uninspiring dishes that would be best described as mediocre, then Henni's in White Salmon, WA is the place for you. As an added bonus, they no longer offer a kids' menu, so we got to spend adult meal money for our 5 and 7-year-olds. Two stars instead of one because the cocktail that my wife ordered was pretty decent.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
Hennis. I am a big foodie and this is my "go to" spot in the Gorge. II have been here over 30 times and counting. Here are the things I absolutely love from their menu: Small plates: Roasted Butternut Squash Steak Bruschetta Pasta: Fettucini with gorgonzola and mushrooms (sooooo amazing). The Henni's Burger is very good as well. They grind and season their own beef, bake their own buns, make their own pickles, etc. The curries are also amazing and have large portions. What makes Hennis stand out even more is their rotating specials. If they have gnocchi - get it! Christiaan also makes this from scratch. Other favorites lately have been the parmesan polenta with crispy pork and truffle oil. The flavor combination is perfect. And lastly... lets talk Cocktails. Michael is pure genius. They are all very imaginative, have great presentation and no joking, he sometimes comes up with these babies in his sleep. Huckleberry Press is my favorite. They will also get fresh fruit when it is in season preserve it or make their own purees so all winter long, you will get some unique goodness.
google avatar

Kathleen M.

Yelp
Ummm, the best tasting food I've had in a while. Not fussy, I could taste the mushrooms. I could taste the spinach. The new potatoes were just that new and very, very fresh. The Goan Curry equally good. The house wine, Pinot Grigio fine and though we didn't have desert, but I sort of wish we had indulged The ambiance is cool it simple. Interesting table arrangement with narrow curtains hung from the ceiling to create visual separation from other tables. They save Henni's from being yet another big square room. I enjoyed dinner at Henni's a lot. .
google avatar

caitlin r.

Yelp
Food is mediocre at best. Two stars is for the small plate fried pork was good. Pork medallion was chewy and potatoes still had a crunch to them. Not impressed at all and I've gone three times to try to like it more (thinking maybe it was a fluke). Wait was ~35 minutes for an unappetizing meal on a Thursday evening. Husband had Henni's burger, thought it was also mediocre. Service is below par for the type of restaurant Henni's is trying to portray. Asked for a Kettle One and Tonic and saw the bartender pour some plastic bottle Vodka in my drink. When I asked him about it he said he didn't know and sort of threw a stink that I asked for him to make me the right drink. Waitstaff seems to try to work in a team environment which means often they come by and ask the same question about three times.

Jimbo P.

Yelp
Wife and I were staying at The Society hotel in Bingen and this was recommended by the check-in gal. Glad she mentioned it because we enjoyed our meal here immensely. Didn't actually order any entrees, just a kale and Brussels sprouts Caesar which was awesome. Then some small plates: tasty Kale fritters in romesco sauce, and delicious roasted cauliflower with polenta and tallegio cheese. That was plenty to satisfy my vegetarian self. Wife also ordered a small plate called bobotie, an egg custard with curry beef and kale(?). She thought that was yummy. Service was very good. Restaurant was a bit cool, temperature wise, which was my only complaint. Highly recommended for dinner, can't speak to any other meals.

Amanda K.

Yelp
Oh Henni's, what would I do without you?! Henni's has a great menu made from fresh and mostly local ingredients and in my countless times eating there the kitchen has been consistent with their delicious dishes. I recommend trying a South African dish, yum. Pairing with the food perfectly is the ambiance. Beautifully decorated without pretension you can feel just as comfortable in your blue jeans as you do in your heels.
google avatar

Steven V.

Yelp
Beautiful atmosphere. We were staying the night in Bingen and we wanted something nice. Menu looks great! Pickled veggie app was amazing. We ordered the Truffle fries & they came to the table half full. Our server graciously comped them without us having to ask. They had been slammed all day apparently and ran out. The lamb was extremely disappointing. I love lamb, and this was just bizarre. The polenta looked extremely sloppy and it appeared as if something had been murdered on my plate. Knife stuck in the mess. Three chunks, that were slathered in sauce and had an unpleasant taste. The meat was extremely hard to get off of the bone. I wish I had ordered something else, my friends loved their meals. Cocktails were great. I'd like to come back when I'm back in White Salmon.
google avatar

Meyaka T.

Yelp
Great food! Came here ready to try some great seafood. We first ordered the truffle fries which were amazing, honestly the best I've had. We had the special of the night which was salmon, with roasted culliflower and potatoes. The only complaint I had was service wasn't that great. I felt like the staff spent more time socializing with one another then tending to the customers.
google avatar

Yelp
Ate here again last night. Amazing as always. Portions are quite large. I love the diverse ethnicities of food. The pastas are mind blowing. So good you don't talk while you're eating. The burgers are really scrumptious. Kale salad is nice balance of lemony tartness and salty, which complement the bitterness of kale quite well. Out of all the dishes we've ordered, only two didn't totally wow us - green beans (a tad under salted) and Thai salmon cakes (truly Thai version in texture and flavor, didn't pair nicely w/other dishes we ordered). Desserts! The peanut butter pie and cheesecake are so fantastic. Usually don't have room for dessert so haven't tried anything else. Oh my daughter loved the Creme brûlée, which looked beautiful. Setting and service are nice. This is our new favorite restaurant in the area.
