The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week: December 8 | Eater LA

"Just opened last week in the Hermon neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles, Hermon’s is worth a visit for many reasons: to witness the vibrancy of the Hermon community that has really shown up for this opening; take in the festive design of the space; enjoy a tiny martini; and most of all, indulge in the loaded potato fritters. Four potato pave cubes arrive with a generous dollop of whipped cream cheese that cradles bacon and chives; the entire thing gets topped with a snowstorm of shaved Parmesan. Though deeply savory and rich, the fluffy consistency of the cream cheese and delicate layers of potato somehow don’t feel assaulting or heavy. I’d be delighted to return to a bar seat at Hermon’s and just order this with a tiny ‘tini to go with it." - Eater Staff

A Former Hermon Church Banquet Hall Is Resurrected as Neighborhood Chophouse Hermon’s | Eater LA

"Set in a former church banquet hall in Hermon, this New American, steakhouse-leaning neighborhood chophouse from Last Word Hospitality pairs a produce-forward California sensibility with classic grill-house comforts. Chef David “DK” Kolender (ex-Dudley Market and Tartine) leads a menu that reframes favorites—scallop crudo on crushed sun-dried tomatoes, tuna carpaccio with chile oil, steak tartare with salsa macha, fried coconut tiger prawns in sweet chile ’nduja sauce, and bacon-and-cheese potato fritters—alongside salads like a miso-mustard greens and citrus panzanella with ’nduja croutons. Mains range from mushrooms bourguignon over brown-butter polenta and whole grilled branzino with toum and lemon to the Ode to Chez cheeseburger (a thick-cut patty with soubise fondue, Bordelaise onions, and Dijon on a sesame-dotted milk bun), steak frites with au poivre, and a 30-ounce grilled rib-eye with chermoula and steak sauce; pastas include a two-sheet lasagna vongole and a ragu Bolognese topped with whipped ricotta, with lemon baked Alaska and skillet cookies for dessert. The bar, by Eric Alperin and Angus McShane, organizes cocktails into “Before the Meal,” “Ice Cold,” and “Martinis,” spanning vermouth on the rocks and a foamy Garibaldi to a $9 Tiny ’Tini, the Hermon’s Classic with smoky or blue cheese olives, and the Chef’s 50/50 served on a block of ice, plus a yuzu margarita, daiquiri, and espresso martini; Evelyn Goreshnik’s wine list pulls from California, Oregon, Italy, and France with glasses starting at $14. Holly Fox’s design—with Wick Architecture—preserves Art Deco bones and Craftsman character via upholstered booths, warm wood floors, exposed beams, and a brown-tiled U-shaped bar that looks into the kitchen, giving the 89-seat room a collected, neighborhood feel; the restaurant opens December 3 and operates 5–10 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with reservations on Resy." - Rebecca Roland

Hermon’s is pure charm, warm lighting, a touch of nostalgia, and a menu absolutely worth the Westside trek. The scallop crudo is bright and clean, like it practices breathwork. The tuna carpaccio is silky and hypnotic. The loaded potato fritters were the runaway favorite and aggressively elbow guarded. The salads slap, full stop. The zucchini and burrata tastes like summer behaving its best. Then the mains roll in and Hermon’s really flexes. The mushroom bourguignon is comfort food that studied abroad in Paris and returned a star. The whole branzino is bronzed, flavorful, and now living rent free in my head. Lemon baked Alaska arrives like the headliner, perfect, dramatic, unforgettable. Hermon’s is that rare new spot that nails every detail. Inviting, polished, and genuinely happy you’re there. The food hits, the drinks are generous, and the whole place hums with rizz. Last Word Hospitality did it again. Already planning my return.

We were lucky to secure a reservation for Hermon’s on their opening night! There was definitely a healthy line of walk ins, so reservations are recommended. First off, the vibes of the place are cozy and comforting. Exactly what you would want in a neighborhood spot . The cocktail list was impressive to me (and I love my cocktails) so I adored the thoughtful attention to this part of the menu. My only note would be the drinks often took a long time to arrive (although the food was well paced) but I have full confidence the team will soon work this out….it was opening night after all. We enjoyed the fries, garlic bread, burger and mushroom bourguignon. Everything was delicious and I’m excited to see the menu expand as this was limited to start. Of note, there didn’t seem to be any items marked vegan on the menu, but there could be some coming down the line or when modified. We also brought our five month old daughter who fit in perfectly for the seating, and we saw a family with their two year old and a 9 week old as well. However, it is unclear if there are high chairs available so families take note. All in all, excited for Hermon’s - when you are here, you are in Hermon!

So excited for this place!!! Wow they did a spectacular job. Gorgeous design, incredible food, really blew me away. The burger was quite possibly the best burger I’ve ever had. Blew my mind. The potato fritters were stellar, crunchy, decadent. And the citrus salad was perfect. Everything was divine. Staff is super friendly. And the interior design is so beautiful and homey. A perfect addition to the neighborhood. Also, the coconut fizz with scotch was delicious. Wow.

Im so happy that Hermon finally has a restaurant! Not to mention the food, service, and atmosphere are amazing. I’ve been once for happy hour and twice more to dine with neighborhood friends, and everything I’ve sampled on the menu was amazing. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and they even allowed us to order a drink while we wearied for our table. If you love Classic upscale American fare in a warm enviting space, you will love this place. I sure do.

Google
Hermon caught our eye just from driving by before it opened. We were excited to try it right after the grand opening. Seating was fast with a reservation, our waitress was knowledgeable and attentive, the old fashion was perfectly balanced and the burgers full of flavor and decadent. The atmosphere reminded me of a dim light restaurant in New York. Perfect low key but upscale spot for a date.

This. Was. Delicious. Tried the steak tartar, the vongole and the potato fritter. Every plate shined in its own way and was so flavorful! Honestly a lovely dining experience and a welcome addition to Los Angeles

Google
Well, I really wanted to love this new restaurant and somehow it exceeded all my expectations - which has never happened before. From the flowers welcoming you at the entrance to the comfort of the chairs the venue is exceptional. Then the food, truly out of this world. We ordered 80% of the menu, not one misstep. Can’t wait to go back - specifically for dessert!!

Google
Hermon’s is exactly what the neighborhood needed. We visited during their opening week, and everything from the ambiance to the food to the service was outstanding. The space is chic and swanky with a classic, elevated style - dim lighting, great decor, and background music that creates the perfect vibe without being overpowering. It feels upscale yet comfortable, the kind of place you can come for a date night or bring the kids and still feel totally at home. We started with the coconut shrimp - so meaty in a flavorful sauce - a great opener. For entrées, the hangar steak and lasagna were both excellent. The steak was cooked beautifully and seasoned just right, and the lasagna packed a punch of flavor in 2 sheets of pure love. Service throughout the meal was attentive, friendly, and professional, especially considering it’s a brand-new restaurant. Our kids were blown away by the desserts. The baked Alaska was a fun, nostalgic showstopper, and the chocolate chip cookie baked in a cast-iron skillet with vanilla ice cream a la mode was an instant family favorite. They’re already asking when we can go back just for dessert. Overall, Hermon’s delivered an impressive experience across the board. It’s stylish, welcoming, and the food is top-tier. We’re excited to have this gem right here in Hermon, and we’ll definitely be back soon. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Tried Hermon's and loved it. Such cozy, cool vibes. The loaded crispy potato fritters is the best bite I've had all year. The two-sheet vongole pasta, garlic bread, and cheeseburger were all amazing too. The steak frites was so tender and full of flavor, and I'm still dreaming of the skillet cookie. They're still in their soft opening and we truly couldn't tell. Service was fantastic - super friendly, personable, and attentive. The place was packed - but we had a reservation and they seated us immediately. Valet Parking available in the lot behind, for $10. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I have been eagerly awaiting the opening of Hermon. Formerly a church banquet hall, this structure is now home to an innovative restaurant by Last Word Hospitality - the folks behind Found Oyster, Queen's Raw Bar & Grill, and Barra Santos to name a few. This lovely establishment gets its moniker from the community it resides in - Hermon. Menu items feature classic California cuisine with a twist and incorporate local produce. The cocktail menu is just as exquisite with a sophisticated offering of martinis. $9 Tiny Tini with blue cheese stuffed olives - yes please! Grown up size available too! Can I tell you how happy I am that this place is walking distance from my house. This Art Deco Craftsman is adorned with blue vinyl upholstered booths, cozy nooks, polished wood floors, exposed beams, a gorgeously tiled u-shaped bar, and an open kitchen. The photos on the wall give it a homey feel. I came here on opening night. There was a line before the doors opened. Since it was the soft opening the menu items were limited. However, I was happy to discover that regular size martinis are $10 during happy hour, so I got the Hermon's Classic with Blue Cheese Stuffed Olives. I also order the Garlic Bread because the ladies sitting next to me at the bar had it and it looked amazing! Bartender Reed was darling. (The staff here are all incredibly nice.) My martini was ice cold and perfect! The Garlic Bread was gasmic! Words can't describe how amazing it is, but I highly recommend. I made two new friends at the bar and we already made plans to meet here again. I found my new happy place.

Yelp
We have been watching the progress from sad church hall to an amazing new restaurant. Walked from home and it's great, food is terrific, good drinks. One tiny observation main courses did not arrive at the same time. It's not a criticism just a soft opening work in progress. AMAZING achievement to everyone. About time our area had a great restaurant. KUDOS for the vision and bravery.

Yelp
Amazing describes this wonderful restaurant and the service is great. The food was amazing

Yelp
Hermon's was everything I hoped it would be. Service was outstanding! I appreciated the host handing us a menu to look over while we waited for out table...nice touch! Great menu selections, not overwhelming but a nice variety. I had the cheeseburger, which was cooked to perfection: not too rare or overcooked at all. And the fries were perfectly crispy. Cocktails were great as well. Congrats to the Hermon's team!
