Melbourne’s Best Cafes for Breakfast and Outstanding Coffee | Eater

"Set in a former power station with cold exposed brick, huge windows, and abundant indoor plants, this large, design-forward space blurs cafe and restaurant boundaries with day and night menus that deliver hearty yet modern dishes — so much so that guests queue to eat everything from slow-cooked steak at 9 a.m. to walnut granola — and it remains a must-visit despite an ownership change in 2018." - Tristan Lutze

I had a unique experience with the menu, but I enjoyed it! The atmosphere is charming, and the service is super friendly. I felt rushed, which I think is part of the Australian way of doing things that we should respect. The coffee really packs a punch—so good! The space is quite ample, though it’s not your typical setup. Overall, I really liked it! The prices are reasonable, and it's in a great central location in Midtown.

If you’re craving a unique interior paired with exceptional service and outstanding food, Higher Ground cafe is the place to go. Designers transformed an old power station into a modern, subtly elegant space. The chefs match this vibe, crafting incredibly delicious and refined dishes. I was kinda thrown by the Udon Carbonara, loaded with spices and seeds—was this really my order? Yup, and it was ridiculously good! Even the long black (seriously high-quality) came with a Turkish twist—a side of sparkling water. Prices? Pretty fair for a place this awesome.

This place was great, building was originally a heritage listed power station in the 1890’s, I love that sort of stuff. Coffee was FANTASTIC and full of personality, food was divine. I had the salmon waffle and my partner had the paren toast Benedict - I do wish I ordered what he had, but I wasn’t disappointed with mine, it was really good. We sat at the “community” table because we didn’t have a booking - so would recommend booking if you wanted to make sure to get a seat. Would definitely return.

Absolutely beautiful! The barista skills are outstanding, so you get to enjoy top-quality coffee. I sat at the bar table and completely lost track of time just watching the barista at work. The brunch was also super delicious. Definitely one of the best cafés in Melbourne!

I recently visited Higher Ground and was quite impressed with the venue’s stunning design and atmosphere. The space is beautifully styled with high ceilings, natural light, and thoughtful details that create a relaxed yet sophisticated vibe—perfect for catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet moment. While the ambience was a definite highlight, I found the drinks to be a bit underwhelming for the price point. The menu has a good variety, but the flavours didn’t quite meet expectations, especially considering the premium cost. Overall, it’s a lovely spot to enjoy the surroundings and the aesthetic, though I’d personally return more for the setting than the beverages.

When you eat out as often as I do, it's rare to be genuinely impressed and overwhelmed. But this place is truly impressive and overwhelming, and is a true 5/5! When I first got the hotcakes, I thought maybe there was too much going on in the plate. But WOW every single ingredient complemented each other and made the hotcakes taste absolutely amazing! The coffee was fantastic too! Interior design of the place is quirky and ambient. Can't recommend this place enough! I'll definitely be back!

Higher ground has a very exciting venue and menu. With exposed bricks, high ceilings and large arch windows, we had such a good time chatting away in a large open vintage space. The service was kind and attentive. We got there on a Sunday morning, left our number and only waited 15 mins for a table. The scrambled eggs, wagyu brisket and prawn toast were delicious. Great place to gather for a fun brunch.

All the staff at Higher Ground were so friendly and kind, but a special shoutout to Liv who went above and beyond to make sure we were well looked after. She checked in on us multiple times throughout our visit, and even made the effort to say goodbye and let us know her shift was over, such a lovely personal touch! It’s rare to see customer service that genuine these days. The food was absolutely delicious with generous portion sizes, and the atmosphere was beautiful. We sat upstairs and had the best views. Such a perfect spot to enjoy a meal. Highly recommend! ✨
