"Hiro Izakaya is a Japanese restaurant in West Town that’s taken over the old Porto space. The menu has small bites like green tea soba noodles, okonomiyaki, and salmon crispy rice, a couple of sandwiches, and some robata skewers like chicken yakitori or ribeye kushiyaki. The bar menu has a variety of cocktails along with a wide selection of sake." - john ringor, nick allen
"Hiro is a glitzy spot where you can drink sweet and strong sesame ginger martinis, and debate the merits of Mandy Moore’s “Candy” in between bites of okonomiyaki. This West Town izakaya is from the team behind the similarly over-the-top Beatnik, and as with its sister restaurant, the shared plates are perfect for a small group fueling a night out. Like that okonomiyaki that's heavy with juicy pieces of octopus, and the citrusy green tea noodles with smoky cauliflower. But order your own two-piece ribeye skewers with sweet yakiniku sauce, because nobody will want to share." - adrian kane, john ringor, nick allen, adrian kane, nick allen, nick allen, john ringor, john ringor, nick allen, john ringor, nick allen, nick allen, nick allen, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, adrian kane, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor, john ringor
"Celeste Group has introduced the latest restaurant in its lineup, Hiro Bar + Izakaya, bringing the spirit of Tokyo izakayas to West Town with live-fire robata dishes, hand rolls, sandos, okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancakes), and noodles from chef Luis Carlos Hernández (Nobu). The beverage program highlights sakes, highballs, and cocktails like a sesame ginger martini, and Hiro replaces Porto, Celeste Group’s Michelin-starred Portuguese and Spanish restaurant that closed in 2023." - Jeffy Mai

"On Thursday, March 6, Celeste announced a new izakaya to open in spring at 1600 W. Chicago Avenue; Celeste has full control of the former space at the northwest corner of Ashland and Chicago. A news release describes the "live-fire robata grill" as the restaurant's soul. The concept will continue to serve seafood (sushi will be on the menu) and plans include small plates and family-style dining options. While not naming any chefs, the release says a group of culinary experts who worked at Asian fusion staples Sunda and Nobu developed the menu. The project will "fixate on an '80s aesthetic," bringing "a taste of Tokyo to town" with traditional Toki highballs, plus sake and whisky." - Ashok Selvam
