Detroit’s Best Sushi

"This modern Japanese restaurant is a spinoff of the award-winning Philly-based Hiroki from chef Hiroki Fujiyama. Situated in a space with a minimalist aesthetic on the lower level of Book Tower downtown, diners here can feast on courses of wagyu from three different regions, robatayaki and yakitori skewers grilled over binchotan charcoal, and noodles. Or, have a seat at the sushi bar and let the team led by chef de cuisine Christian Vasquez-Yax take care of your seafood needs. Here, the team utilizes traditional Edomae techniques, sourcing fish from Kyoto and produce from Michigan, and using Yuki Tsubaki rice. Select from a variety of nigiri and sashimi offerings, and more elaborate creations, like the seven-piece sashimi gozen — featuring an array of fish and prepared chef’s choice." - Serena Maria Daniels

As for the food, the menu leans in on shareable plates made with ingredients imported directly from Japan each week. Diners can expect items like robatayaki and yakitori skewers grilled using Binchotan charcoal, three regional varieties of wagyu, noodles, and sushi. Craftsmanship at its best. Detailed work in execution for fine dining experience. Great variety and authentic experience of Japanese cuisine. Feels like dinning in NYC, Chicago restaurants. Food was amazing, drinks were great and dessert was just perfect! Another great place to dine in historic book tower. Very small portions so be ready to order multiple plates.

Google
Truly incredible food, drinks, and service! I would come back for the wagyu skewers and fried chicken alone. I got a free fluffy cheesecake for my birthday dessert which was good but I think could’ve used more of the fruit topping. My only complaint is that the stools for sitting at the kitchen bar don’t have a back so it gets uncomfortable to sit after a while. Overall, we had a great experience!

I recently celebrated a friend’s birthday at Hiroki-San, and it was an unforgettable experience. Our server, Arius, was absolutely stellar. She went above and beyond, recommending incredible dishes for us to try and patiently explaining the more complex menu items. Her speed and attention to detail ensured that every request was met flawlessly. Arius even made the celebration extra special by bringing out a cake with candles and joining us in singing happy birthday, which made my friend’s day truly memorable. The food was spectacular—each dish was packed with unique flavors and textures. The tapas-style menu is perfect for sharing, allowing everyone at the table to sample a variety of dishes. The ambiance added to the experience with its dark, moody, and fun vibe. Thank you, Arius, for making our evening so special. We’ll definitely be back!

We came in with high expectations and those bad boys were met and then some! Our server Noemi did such a nice job guiding us through the menu and Matt was so friendly to us as well! The food was so delicious I really have no words. The n/a drinks were also fantastic. The ambiance and the atmosphere is a whole other level. I’m so happy this place is in Detroit! We will be back again!

Hiroki-San is an absolute gem in downtown Detroit—a dining experience that effortlessly transports you to NYC. The food is divine, and each dish is a masterpiece. I seriously cannot get enough of this place! *I recommend sitting at the bar. The sushi chef is so fun, engaging, and truly gifted.*

Google
The location is great. Sushi was excellent. Service was great. Sushi bar might be a little squished but not a big deal. Get a table if you want the room. Can't wait to go again.

Google
This is easily the best Japanese/Izakaya food I’ve had in Detroit, comparable to the quality you can find in foodie cities like SF/LA/NYC. Ordered the chicken thigh yakitori, nigiri platter, salmon chazuke, and some other dishes - imo the yakitori was their best dish.

Wow! Wanted to try a new place in our neighborhood, and HIROKI-SAN did not disappoint! Everything was amazing from the vibes to the food, and the amazing staff. We sat at a bar seat, and you can see how much love they put into the food they prepare! 🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾

Yelp
We have been here multiply times and will keep coming back. My husband and I loce this place and all the sushi and sashimi is fresh. They really value the art and making sure you get a fresh piece of sushi. My husband and I always have great service and waiters that are nice and friendly. We always get to the uni and have never been disappointed. They also have some meats that are amazing and the sauce that they pair it with is perfect. Yes this place is a little on the pricer side but definitely worth it. Make sure you make a reservation for the weekends and dinner just to make sure. But other times you can call them and see if they have a table. That is what we do....go on a weekday they are open. The restaurant itself is nice and has tables and booths. it is dimmer in there but goes with the ambiance. If you have not been here I definitely would try it.

Yelp
A beautifully understated and intimate Japanese restaurant in the heart of Detroit. I've read a number of reviews that complained about portion size. Their menu is almost more of a tasting menu, like Japanese tapas. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and every dish was well-prepared. Our server Arius (I hope I spelled it correctly) was very helpful and informative in walking us through the menu and regarding portion size (there were four of us). One of the highlights of the numerous dishes we tried was the Tako-Agi (fried octopus -?$21). We also liked the Gyoza ($14.) and the Karaage (Japanese fried chicken - $18.). Also good was the Nikujaga (Wagyu beef, hot pot, which was served with potatoes and Maloni noodles in a shoyu broth ($24.)), the Gindara (black cod in miso - $27.), and the Guytan (Wagu beef tongue - $12.). These are all small plates, essentially only a couple of bites per person, per dish. That being said, we were all full at the end of the meal. With a cocktail and perhaps a glass of wine or saki, one should expect a bill of around $100 per person with tip. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and plan to return in the near future.

Yelp
Was great We sat at the Sushi Bar, so there was a bit of entertainment in that. Food was flavourful and unique in taste I should have taken photos... Was too hungry Yes Food Amazing We were 1st sat at a bar, which we appreciated (we didn't have reservations (the restaurant we had reservations (closed without notice) I was told several times we Would not be seated by the manager. Fortunately the 4 of us were seated and then moved to the sushi bar. THIS AREA the seats had backs and we didn't keep sliding off. Watching the sushi was good. Yet we could not talk to each other or hear what the Sushi chefs were saying, because the overhead music was too loud. The waystaff had to reach from behind us to place our food often putting hands over already placed food I think while amazing food Too much is trying to be accomplished in tooo small a area I appreciate the (New York) of Detroit restaurants, however let's not forget the Comfort of the local Detroit patrons who have never left the city

Yelp
My friend and I tried this place after hearing amazing reviews from friends, and it lived up to the hype. We split a number of appetizers, entrees, and sushi rolls based on our server recommendations. I especially loved the sushi rolls and the flavor of the gindara (black cod) appetizer, which was quite a large portion for an appetizer. The interior feels very intimate with dim lighting and chic, clean decor. Loved this spot and looking forward to going back.

Yelp
A beautiful awesome evening amazing people of the world! Tonight we've snagged a table at the Hiroki-San restaurant in Downtown, Detroit. A Japanese restaurant that hits. Let's get started shall we. Wagyu - Delish AF, the soy sauce and egg yolk dipping sauce was phenomenal. Definitely a quality over quantity item. 9.5/10. It's that good. Gyutan - The Beef tongue was divine. The flavor was amazing, it seasoned very well and the texture was super tender. 9 out of 10 Tuna Caviar - Great flavor,, the shizo tempura was perfect accompaniment to the Tuna and the fish eggs. 8.8 out of 10. Uni Toro - DIVINE, Tuna with sea urchin is a combo made in heaven. Plus that edible gold garnish brings an elevated look to it. 8.5 out of 10 Uni Nigiri - Urchin is something we usually gravitate to. The fact that these were presented in a manner that's unusual to most is a plus. 9.9 out of 10. Matcha tiramisu - Yuzu is the focal point of the dish. Extremely delicious. I highly recommend you finish the evening with this dessert. Listen, if you like discovering new places to smash. Hit that follow button. Share this review with a smash mode buddy and thank you so much for reading! I love you! Mwah!!

Yelp
Hiroki San is a fantastic spot for authentic Japanese cuisine with a refined touch. The tako-age was crispy outside, tender inside, with a perfectly balanced seasoning. The asari soba offered a comforting, light broth with fresh clams that complemented the soba noodles beautifully. The sushi + sashimi gozen was a highlight--every piece was fresh, skillfully cut, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The ambiance was calm, and the service attentive without being intrusive. Highly recommended for anyone seeking quality, authentic Japanese flavors in a welcoming setting.

Yelp
The service at Hiroki-San was truly phenomenal! Very accommodating. Tried an assortment of dishes -enjoyed all but the consensus among the group was definitely that the fried octopus was outstanding! Ambience very inviting and relaxing.

Yelp
Excellent experience! In addition to the food being delicious, the ambiance is really nice and the service is outstanding. Would definitely recommend checking out this amazing Japanese concept located in the stunning Book Tower! Great menu for both sharing with friends and/or going individually/on a date. I went with a couple friends and we tried a variety of cold/hot plates, yakitori, and maki rolls. I loved sampling different types of dishes, and EVERYTHING was good with interesting, unique, and balanced flavors, textures, temperatures. The standouts for me: - Kanpachi Carpaccio (cold dish). Soo fresh and delicious, with the thinly sliced kanpachi soaking in the yuzu ponzu and ginger scallion oil. Each piece had a little chile on top which added a nice crunch and spicy kick! - Tako-Age (hot dish). So flavorful and the octopus was so tender. Not sure I've ever had octopus that tender before! - Hirata (pork belly) Buns (hot dish). I know you can find pork belly buns at a lot of Asian restaurants but these were unique! Loved the flavor of the pickled veggies in this one and the pork belly slice was fatty and thick. - Hokkaido (maki roll). Unique flavors for a scallop sushi roll! The shiso stood out as well as the lemon aioli and wasabi tobiko on top. Our main waitress, Millie (sp?) was amazing and had great recommendations to share. The hand towel service at the start of the meal was a nice touch. Also loved the view into the kitchen - it was really cool to see the yakitori skewers in action and smelled great. There was low bar seating along the kitchen and a sushi counter which looks like would be a great experience for solo or paired dining too. We parked in a nearby lot on Grand River, reserved on SpotHero and a 2min walk away. Looks like reservations open on a rolling basis, a month out.

Yelp
We were really excited for a new sushi spot to open in Detroit so when we heard about Hiroki-San we booked a table right away. This place has a great ambiance, feels like you're dining in NYC, Chicago, San Francisco. Drinks were delicious and I do feel like it's a great date night place with the moody lighting and intimate tables, unfortunately the sushi did not match the beautiful aesthetic. I did want to say that I decided to try this place for a second time before writing this review unfortunately both times were a miss with the sushi. The food is small plates so everything is meant to be shared, I suggest trying a bit of everything. Our waitress the second time was incredibly kind and helpful. I was disappointed with the sushi however, both times the sushi had a fishy taste, seems like the quality just wasn't the best. The ramen could've used a bit more flavor and the sashimi was wonderful but very small portions. Overall great location and ambiance!

Yelp
We were so excited to try this place, and we really wanted to love it, but our overall experience was a bit of a let down. We did love the basement vibe and the decor, but the service was spotty and inconsistent. It took about 10 minutes for a server to come to our table after we were seated, and only after we asked another server where our server was. Once she came, she wasn't much of a help because she didn't know too much about anything on the menu...it was like she was reading the menu for the first time with us. So we just ordered based on other reviews and recommendations. Most of the dishes were just OK; portions were tiny and lacked flavor. Nothing really stood out to us besides the Gyoza and Hirata Buns. Even the drinks were bland and hard to finish. Sushi was disappointing. They ran out of the Japanese cheesecake which I was most excited to try, so we settled on the black sesame pudding which was another letdown. Our server said the dessert was complimentary because of my birthday, but we still got charged for it, and we just wanted to leave so we didn't say anything about it. Sadly, I don't think we'll be back.

Yelp
The food here was excellent and the vibe was immaculate. It was a little dark, so you might have trouble seeing your menu. It's underground and a fun experience for someone visiting Detroit. Their black sesame panna cotta was very tasty. The food was high quality. The servers were very nice and were willing to tell us a little bit about Detroit and where to visit around the city. This is a place I would definitely go back to.

Yelp
Hiroki-san is a top-notch spot in downtown Detroit. We visited over the weekend for an early dinner. It's located in the basement of the newly restored Book Tower, which is an absolutely beautiful building. We sat at the bar where the sushi is prepared. It was so much un watching these artisans craft the perfect, most amazing things. From the cocktails to the dessert, everything we had was exceptional. Some standouts were the fried octopus and the fatty tuna nigiri. We ended up ordering more than we anticipated because everything was amazing. Our server was also vert informative and helpful when we were making our selections. We can't wait to go back for a special occasion.

Yelp
This was a fun date night at a very traditional Japanese restaurant in the heart of downtown Detroit. It's nice when the food you're eating is as authentic as possible instead of a bastardized version to cater to broader tastes. The A5 Wagyu beef tongue, fried octopus and chicken curry katsu were some of the highlights. The decor and ambiance are stunning. This place is second to none in terms of recreating the feeling of being in Japan eating like the locals. My wife and I were extremely impressed by the menu (which we had to study prior to our arrival) because of the variety of ingredients and culinary techniques being put on display. What made this visit even better was our very enthusiastic and knowledgeable waitress. We ordered so many menu items, but never felt truly full until dessert because the portions were moderate and the arrival of each dish was spaced out perfectly from one another. They really do understand the art of turning dining into an experience rather than a necessity of life. Everything we consumed was either super flavorful or had amazing texture. The one I want to highlight most was the A5 Wagyu beef tongue, which melted in my mouth and tender enough to break with chopsticks alone. Cannot wait to come back here again, worth every penny.

Yelp
Hiroki-san brought me to Japan in every way. The decor, food and service were so close to my recent experience in Japan! Our server, Sarah, had lived in Japan for five years and gave us great recommendations on Sake and food choices. We went with a nice mix of sashimi, house made Japanese pickles, mushroom and shisheito yakitori and an amazing Kobe beef noodle dish. For dessert we shared the matcha tiramisu. Everything's mg was delicious. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow!!! This place was incredible!!!! The atmosphere is warm and cozy. There was a great vibe! This was a very unique experience. The chef took the best of the best of Japanese cuisine and presented it all in one restaurant. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They explained each dish so that we knew exactly what we were getting. We like to share small plates so that we get to experience several options. The food was delicious! After trying each dish, I did a little happy dance and clapped my hands lol. So yummy! The experience of the upstairs bar, the speakeasy, and the restaurant made for a perfect date night! I can't recommend it more!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food, service, and ambience. You're getting the freshest, highest quality of food. If you're expecting deep fried sushi or cream cheese in your sushi then this is probably not the place for you lol. Yes, portions are small, but if you know how to order food then you should be good (miso soup, sushi/sashimi, apps, rice, noodles, etc.) don't come here and just order one fish for yourself otherwise you'll do yourself a disservice. Loved every dish but standouts were the mentaiko udon and black cod.
google avatar

Kalyn D.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 10 stars! My friend and I came here on a wednesday night. We wanted the full experience so we asked for Omakase. Our waitress, Sara, said they technically didn't have that yet but she felt comfortable putting something together for us because she was very comfortable with the menu and knew what would give us an authentic experience having lived in Japan for several years. She asked about our preferences and got an idea of what we wanted. We asked for basically an authentic experience that also highlighted the chef's vision. With alcohol pairings. This is what she brought us- Karaage Chawanmushi Octopus dish i cant remember the name of Chashu Hotate Gindara Shishito Olive waygu Sal-kani maki Tuna comparison sashimi Sardine and barracuda nigiri With sake and wine pairings It was all phenomenal. My personal favorite was the chawanmushi and if you never had barracuda before (I had not)- OMG! But the showstopper was the olive waygu (which apparently is one of the most exclusive and hard-to-get meats there is- Sara will tell you all about that)You literally can't do anything but stare into space when you put it in your mouth. We usually continue our conversation through the food after a couple bites but we were completely silent whenever there was waygu in our mouths until it was gone. UNREAL. Sara was a wonder. She was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the food, the authenticity of the food, and the significance of the food related to Japanese culture. It was an experience. Food, ambiance, service, timing of the courses- perfection. There was nothing about the night that could have been any better and we let the manager Brian know it. As I'm sure you can imagine, this meal didn't come cheap (honestly aside from the waygu, the alcohol was more expensive than the food) but you would have thought that teleporting to Japan and having a chef who trained under Iron Chef Morimoto prepare your dinner would have cost a lot more than a few hundred bucks.
google avatar

Yelp
I thought the food here was pretty good. The sushi was awesome (not pictured). Only problem I had was the pork belly was not very tender. The drinks were tasty and the service was very attentive and fast. We sat at the high tops where you get to watch the chefs cook which was a really fun experience! It was noisy and busy for a Thursday but in a good way :)

Yelp
Best food and service in the D! Surprise basement Japanese with flair and the most yummy food and secret bar with deliciously naughty cocktails

Yelp
Beautiful new restaurant in book tower! We made a reservation for 5pm and were some of the first people seated. The space is dimly lit, romantic, trendy. There is an open view into the kitchen, which was a nice touch. We were sat quickly and ordered a little bit of everything. Some of our favorites included the carpaccio and tako age. All of our meats were extremely tasty and tender. The staff was phenomenal and very attentive. We felt welcome from the second we walked in. I loved my experience here--would definitely recommend, especially for a special occasion since it was on the pricier side!

Yelp
Located in the basement so walk down the stairs. Very dim lighting. I had high hopes for this place but sadly it was super disappointing. Firstly came here with a couple of girlfriends and we ordered some things to share since the waitress stated most things are meant for sharing but the portions were so small for the price and not really enough to share. The Tako-age was good, nice tender pieces of octopus. We also got the sushi gozen platter (10 piece nigiri and 1 maki roll) - the rice was super vinegary so it took away from the fish, but the fish wasn't as fresh as it should've been (tasted fishy) and the slice of fish was super thin also. Also got the MENTAIKO udon and it was okay but again super small portion. Last but not least we got the snow beef, so I wasn't expecting for $150 to get less than a butter stick worth of meat. Legitimately less than a butter stick that's how small it was. Yes it tasted good but was it worth it? No. You could get a whole steak of A5 wagyu for that price at a Japanese market. For dessert we got the sesame pudding which was half way full in a tiny cup. (Face palm) good flavor though. Trust me I'm all for paying for good QUALITY food but when the quality is sub-par and you're paying $$$ its kind of a slap in the face when you have to go home and eat a cup ramen post an almost $400 meal.

Marissa C.

Yelp
Overall, food portions fairly small, appetizers are better than the entrees. I arrived here for a surprise birthday dinner, max reservation was for 6 people. This is located in the book tower basement and overall, it was very cute but the ambiance was definitely a little dark and a little bit loud. The waitress was incredibly nice and knowledgeable about the menu. Overall we ordered 7 apps and 6 entrees to shared among 6 people. Generally this is a little more than what I typically order so the food portions are on the smaller size. The baos were probably the best appetizer. The pork belly ramen was good however I did expect the pork belly was a little warmer (it was just a tad cold) and for it to have some charring. The broth was delicious though! The udon was also good but the ramen broth was better than the udon broth. Given the better apps than entrees, drinks were decent, and the service was excellent, it is what pushed my original 3.5 stars to 4.

Larissa L.

Yelp
Wow wow wow wow wowwwwww!!! Phenomenal meal. Truly upscale fine dining experience that you can only find in places like New York or LA. We were shocked. Every dish that we had was fantastic. Our favorites were the king crab and the octopus hot plates. We ordered all 3 desserts and the best one was the matcha tiramisu.

Tom K.

Yelp
Had a great experience. The food and service were exceptional. The building is amazing. This has been hiding in plane sight. We had the tuna caviar, the sea urchin sushi, the Waygu tongue.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Food was decent, definitely not worth the price. The portions are extremely small and the menu is misleading. We went as a party of four and left hungry after spending $450. The service and ambience were great - would go back for a drink.

Yelp
Service was amazing! Everyone from the hostesses, our waitress, Sarah, to the sous chef, Louis! They each shared recommendations and guided us through our meal, as we shared what we were looking for. The atmosphere was romantic, not too loud and very authentic feeling. This one deserves to be top of any "Detroit favorites" list!

Yelp
Hiroki-san is the new Japanese izakaya hidden in the basement of the rejuvenated Book tower in Detroit. There are several Hiroki restaurants around the world and they have been awarded Michelin star accolades. As you descend down the candle lit staircase into the hidden restaurant you know you are in for a memorable experience. From the natural wooden decor, sushi bar and Japanese wood burning grill, Hiroki-san surely feels like a traditional izakaya. The menu is composed of an extensive menu with composed Japanese dishes as well as a sushi menu. We decided to share multiple dishes and sushi to get a true feeling of the menu. The highlight dish of the night was the chawanmushi egg with truffle shavings, the grilled mushroom and the sweet simmered chicken over rice with a jidori egg. The chawanmushi is an egg custard and I must admit that it was like nothing I have ever tasted before. It was truly an umami bomb and heavenly. We did go to the restaurant with the intention of eating lots of sushi, however we unfortunately were not impressed with the rolls we ordered. Thankfully the wait staff was very accommodating as they gladly swapped out our sushi rolls for a different offering. Overall our experience at Hiroki was fantastic and I look forward to sampling more of their delicious creations in the future.

Yelp
Horrible restaurant, from the minute you walk in to the rude staff. The food was not all that. Prices are extremely high!!!! Drink prices way to high this place wont last. One restroom to share was very uncomfortable and weird. Do not bring your family especially children here. Be aware
google avatar

Clark G.

Yelp
The sushi here is not good - it's not even as good at the cheap stuff at Meijer. It's bland: the only discernable flavor in two of the rolls I had tonight was cucumber, and the only thing you could taste in the third one was jalapeno. What's worse than the not good sushi, though, is the feeling that you're being taken advantage of at Hiroki-San. The prices are outrageous. The portions are hilariously small. And the sushi itself is truly some of the least inspired and most forgettable I've ever had.
google avatar

Ricky H.

Yelp
Service was friendly, the ambiance is very nice for a date night but the portions for the price is going to make me not come back. $300 bill for me and my wife to leave just as hungry as when we showed up and that's with no drinks! We went to go get a pizza after lol. Picture attached is the Wagyu steak. I've had it at a few places and price always ranges $100-$150 for a full steak. The pic below is $130 for a tiny piece of the steak. Never again. Best thing about our visit is we got a funny story to tell our friends

Yelp
Was very excited to try Hiroki-san even though they are in a soft opening right now. The restaurant is beautifully designed. Very homey yet contemporary Japanese feel. Open kitchen with an so you can sit and watch if you like (just like it would be in Japan) The restaurant is dimly light and cozy but bring your readers if you have trouble reading the small fonted menu in the dim light. In terms of the menu there is an excellent selection of hot/cold shareables as well as sushi, sashimi, some noodles, and chicken-katsu curry, and Wagyu steak options. The food really was excellent. Beautifully plated and very tasty. I lived in Japan and am very picky when it comes to Japanese food. The karaage chicken was so delicious. Truth be told it was probably the best I've ever had. The chicken katsu curry was also excellent. It's definitely Japanese comfort food and the chicken breast was large, juicy, and perfectly fried. Pretty much everything was delicious. The toro tartare with caviar was superb but wow, the portion is tiny. Drinks were very good. Lots of inventive cocktails but they $17 and up! Great Japanese whiskey selection as well. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars because while the food was excellent, it was wildly overpriced, especially for Detroit. If you are hungry you will be satisfied but your wallet will be much lighter when you leave. Overall though, a nice addition to the Detroit fine dining scene.

Yelp
Hiroki-San was a nice surprise. Beautiful atmosphere, top-notch food and good service. The restaurant is located in the basement of the Book Tower and it feels like you are in Tokyo. They've done a great job with the interior which is the case for all of all the restaurants in the building. The menu is fairly extensive and they have a good selection of sashimi, maki and Japanese liquor. We ordered the maguro maki, the chicken kaarage, the octopus and the black cod. All were amazing. The octopus was some of the best I've ever had-very tender with a smokey BBQ flavor. We found the prices to be reasonable given the high quality ingredients used here. The tuna roll had three types of tuna which is flown in three times/week from Japan. You pay for that level of quality. Hiroki-san fills up fast and now we know why. We'll be back.

Yelp
Pros: -The restaurant has a cool vibe -Our server was attentive and explained the drink and food menu thoroughly -Fresh fish flown in from Japan Cons: -PRICE! Our bill came out to $300 before tip for 4 people (1 drink each) and we all left hungry -Small portions. We were recommended to share, so ordered quite a few dishes and rolls (sashimi and nikujaga not pictured). Shashimi was two very small pieces of fish cut paper thin -Drinks were ~ $20 each Overall, a fun experience, but brought down by the prices. Drinks and food were good, but probably the type of place you check out once and only return for a special occasion.

Yelp
This place gets a 5/5 for decor and vibe. Service also gets a 5/5. Staff were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, my 3/5 review is because of the food. We ordered a few things from each of the sections. All the yakitori items were tasty. The pickled veggies and seaweed salad were okay. Giyoza tasted as good as the frozen ones you get from Costco. Pork buns were sour tasting and chewy. Not the buttery texture you expect from pork belly. The maki rolls were either fishy tasting or flavorless. We got the chefs choice platter for nigiri. Only 3/10 fish were good. The rest was chewy and fishy in flavor. Overall, we do not plan to come back when dining in downtown.

Yelp
So badly wish I took pictures of our food but was so mesmerized by the experience that I forgot to! Such great service and food. Already planning my next visit!!

Yelp
Food was amazing, service was amazing and although it's in a basement with no windows, ambiance....amazing. It's pretty small in there so you definitely need to make a reservation which we did and were seated right away. When you arrive you walk down this gorgeous curved stairway that is just restored to perfection like the whole building is. There were 4 of us so we decided to do a bunch of shareable stuff because everything looks so good and it's really hard to choose. We started with cocktails I cannot remember we the names of them but I asked for something fresh not sweet and everyone else had a whiskey based cocktail resembling an old fashioned. Funny those are the only pics I got since we were all pretty hungry and started eating before I could take a photo. We had neguma which was a chicken thigh dish, gyoza which was a pork dumpling, hirata buns which were pork belly steamed buns, inu-gyu a Japanese wagyu dish and tako-age which was crispy fried octopus with crunchy chili garlic. All were great but the most memorable was the Tako-Age! It was so good we had to get another order. It was crispy and tasted almost like lobster the octopus was so tender I would love to go again just for that. Of course we were stuffed afterwards so no dessert for us. We pretty much went with all of our servers recommended dishes and so happy we did. She was spot on and we loved it all.

Yelp
Fantastic desserts first and foremost. The black sesame pudding was so delicate, flavored and creamy. It was more like a Panna cotta than a pudding in my opinion, but the sesame flavor was not overpowering while still shining through. The little Sesame brittle on top was amazing too. I would have been happy just having that tiramisu had an another fabulous topping with some sort of Yuzu marmalade and the flavor and texture of it was spot on the other dish to mention was the Tako-ace octopus. It was cooked to perfection and the flavors were just out of this world. I also wish I would have been able to buy a gallon of the bamboo cutter cocktail. It is so refreshing and the jasmine tea was such a compliment to the food. Modern and refined plating for all dishes, but we were so quick to taste everything we didn't get many pics. The crowd was a bit stuffy but the service made it very welcoming and comfortable.

Yelp
After living in Japan for 3 years, we were so excited about this opening and brought our two children who eat everything and miss Japan. The food was truly exceptional but for the sushi, which was sadly underwhelming. We ordered extensively, and the salmon and wagyu beef tongue were over the top good. The pork belly buns were great, the fried garlic octopus to die for. The tuna tartare was delicious, as were the cocktails and the sake our waitress recommended. The desserts were very much in the Japanese style, not overly sweet, which we like, and we enjoyed the cheesecake and the tiramisu . But we ordered an uni roll that we couldn't detect uni in--heavy on the fake crab and cucumber. We ordered two $82 Chef's Choice nigiri with a Maki roll and 2 small chirashi bowls for the kids ($17 each) that just weren't impressive (bland!). I also won't lie, I was a little miffed to be charged for a refill of soda with an over $600 check! But if you go for everything but the sushi, it's a wonderful experience that we will likely do again. Portions are small, and it's not going to be a cheap meal , but it's definitely worth doing. And here's hoping they up their Sushi game (& stop nickel and diming on pop refills!)

Yelp
Came for my birthday and it was delicious! My husband and I tried a few appetizers including the wagyu, tuna-caviar, gindara (black cod) and gyoza. Everything was wonderful and so flavorful. The cod melted in your mouth!! We also tried a few of their signature drinks - I liked the one with Umeshu, it was very light like a sangria. We ended with the matcha tiramisu and though it wasn't much of a typical tiramisu, it was delicious and we ate every bite! We also had the best waiter. Can't wait to come back

Yelp
We had an amazing experience at Hiroki-San starting with the saki bar upstairs, then to the very sexy speakeasy and finally to dinner at the restaurant. We ordered around 10 courses including the octopus, robata, salad, and more and then ending with the olive-fed A5 wagyu. Everything was a hit. Maria, our server, was a pleasure. The whole night was fantastic . Highly recommend the entire experience.

Yelp
Great small bites but shareable food. Service was superb. Our waiter spoke very polite Japanese and English. Explained the menu and offered suggestions. Great dark ambiance for a nice date night. A little pricey but overall worth the whole experience. The skin of the fish on the robatayaki was crisp and tasty. For drinks we had Japanese beer including Hitachino, a Japanese-style old-fashioned- it was all good.

Yelp
One gender inclusive restroom to share was very uncomfortable. This place lacks a true Japanese experience and spent more time trying to be politically correct. Do not dine here with your children and if you do, just be sure to accompany them when using the restroom. EVERYONE in the restroom shared the same uncomfortable experience. The food itself are small portions for a high price.

Yelp
1. Food: excellent variety, taste, preparation and presentation. Really amazing flavor on the soup 'broth' (transends the word broth). 2. Service: very knowledgeable, polite and friendly, and VERY attentive. 3. Prices: The drinks were pricey but delicious. Food prices were quite reasonable.

Yelp
The place was cute but very cramped inside. The food was poor quality, sushi was not fresh, & the entire menu lacked flavor/freshness. If you actually like sushi, do not come here. Portions are incredibly small as well, which wouldn't be as much of an issue if it wasn't gross.

Yelp
I really wanted to love it! The interior is amazing, and I actually admired the quality of the chairs as we sat down. The water was good (if you know you know). Service wasn't great but our server was working hard, he just had a lot of tables. Bill was $215 which seemed a lot considering we felt we didn't eat much. Enjoyed the wine by the glass. Their version of an old fashioned was also good. The kanpachi dish was spectacular and the highlight of the meal. The yakitori items and the gyoza were very unmemorable. The octopus was heavily breaded which was odd for me. The nigiri was straight up not good, which was so disappointing. The quest for edible sushi in Detroit continues

Yelp
Great food, service, and ambiance! Highly recommend. We got a little of everything on the menu to share and it all tasted delicious with a unique touch.

Yelp
Excellent food & service. Came for sushi but actually enjoyed the other menu items even more. Definitely get the mushrooms - they were incredible!

Yelp
The atmosphere and staff are an amazing experience. Our server Tara was amazing! Everything she recommended was perfect. If you like tea I highly recommend the black tea from Sri Lanka.. I drank the whole pot!

Yelp
Last weekend we had an absolutely amazing meal at Hiroki-San. We were unable to get reservations at the last minute so we went early and were able to get a seat. The hostess, Hope, was friendly and recommended we sit at the counter in front of the kitchen. Great suggestion. We loved watching the chefs and kitchen staff at work. Bryan Moody, the manager, was masterful at running a smooth, efficient team with ease and spent some time chatting with us during the evening. Evan, our waiter, was fantastic and great at helping us navigate the menu and giving us suggestions. We tried a little of everything and our favorites were sunomuno (with sashimi), octopus carpaccio, and the gindara (which rivaled the black cod at Nobu). Finally, our special treat was the Snow beef- WOW! Literally melts in your mouth. Definitely worth the splurge for a special occasion. Do not be fooled by the portion size. Because the steak is so rich and flavorful it is more than enough for two people to share. Each dish was plated and presented beautifully with the staff explaining the ingredients. Highly recommend and we will be back! Great to see such high end food in Detroit.
