Yelp
This place came highly recommended, so I was excited to try it. Came here with three of the people, so have a good idea of the dishes and ordered a wide selection of entrees.
The place itself has some challenges in that it may be difficult to spot at night, because their sign is barely visible. Then parking is potentially an issue, but you could park at the clinic parking lot nearby or the parking lot behind Vino Cruz.
The restaurant is set up inside house. That's why it's called Home, it has a nice ambience and Boho decor. The servers were very attentive and friendly. We went there on Friday night and the place was busy.
Appetizers:
For appetizers, we ordered marinated olives, the fries, and the salad, spinach salad. Out of the three our favorite was the salad. Olives were good. They were warm and buttery the salad taste and nice mix of flavors. The potatoes were served with average mayo and they just tasted like bland potatoes, that were slightly undercooked in the inside and burnt on the outside- but without a crisp.
Olives 4/5
Salad 5/5
Potatoes 1/5
Entrees:
For our main dishes, we ordered the book, the squid ink pasta dish, and the lasagne. Not one single one of us could say that their dish was above average. The presentation of the food was homely, and the portions were generous.
I ordered osso bucco because it's not a dish I cook often. But I am very familiar with the recipe and is one of my favorite dishes. It comes in a little clay pot with polenta, and some kind of chopped up condiments, which really didn't add much to the dish. I don't think this was a traditional osso bucco because it seems like they're just cooking the bones separately from the meat. The bone I got had pink marrow inside and they tried to tell me that's how it was supposed to be, but I've made this recipe many times and the marrow should be custardy, thoroughly cooked, you can achieve that when you cook the bone with the meat properly.
The bone was surrounded by what I can describe as a meat Ragu. Literally it was meat and tomato stew, and they put the undercooked bone in the middle, with dollops of polenta and popped in the oven, then tried to pass it as osso bucco. Ugh!
The other person that ordered the osso bucco had never had it so they thought the beef stew was good, exactly my point. It is NOT meant to be beef stew! Exactly my point
My friend who had the squid ink entree said it was ok and had nothing else to say about it. The one that ordered the lasagna left half of it on the plate. She said it was OK - for a place that came so well recommend it that's a lot of okays for the food. I was expecting more compliments on the dishes.
Osso bucco - 0/5
Squid ink pasta- 4/5
Lasagne - 3/5
Dessert:
For dessert, we shared the panna cotta. This is one of the most basic custard style desserts. I thought it was impossible to screw up, but this place made the impossible possible.
The panna cotta was stiff, meaning overcooked. It was also too heavy. It was served with pieces of citrus and a few pistachios on the top. The concept of an orange cream dessert sounds appealing, but the execution was disappointing. I asked one of my friends if she liked it, and she said "oh well I eat anything", that's as much of a compliment it got at the table.
Panna cotta w Citrus - 2/5
We brought our own wine so can't say anything about the quality of their wines.
The food was pricey, in my opinion it doesn't raise to the level of quality you would expect from that tier and level of expectation. The place itself has potential and I can see that if the menu is better, it could become a great dining option in the future.
