Experience These Top Culinary Courses in Philadelphia | Eater Philly

"Janine Bruno, a skilled pastaia (the Italian word for pasta maker and seller), leads pasta-making and tasting courses in South Philadelphia. Classes are scheduled multiple evenings each week, where attendees explore Italian history and heritage while learning how to make up to five different types of pasta by hand." - George Banks-Weston

The Chef Behind Homemade by Bruno Found Purpose Through Pasta and Gelato | Eater Philly

"An authentic expression of chef Janine Bruno’s Sicilian roots, Homemade by Bruno functions as a cooking school and small-batch gelato studio rather than a restaurant, with no set hours and a homey space of exposed brick and a long wooden counter meant to feel like coming over for Sunday dinner. Bruno teaches traditional Italian techniques — from perfecting your trofie twisting technique to making meatballs just like nona used to, shaping orecchiette and gnocchi, and other pasta-making rituals — and classes bring together passionate home cooks and often end on a sweet note with one of her eclectic gelato flavors (everything from rainbow cookie to Thai chile push pops). Self-taught and driven by a healing, ancestral connection to food after surviving breast cancer and personal loss, she built Homemade by Bruno from in-home pasta classes and catering beginning in 2018 and opened the brick-and-mortar kitchen studio near 15th and Wharton on March 25 of this year. Her small-batch gourmet gelato is mostly produced for restaurant collaborations and special pint releases, and has earned local and international accolades — named among the best in North America and honored at competitions like Gelato Festival America (winner of the Popular Jury) and the Gelato Festival World Masters (top three), with recognition from chefs such as Giada De Laurentiis." - Kae Lani Palmisano

Homemade by Bruno - Review - Point Breeze - Philadelphia - The Infatuation

"Homemade by Bruno is a spot in Point Breeze serving up things like Italian rainbow cookie gelato and vegan lemon basil sorbetto, but they also have a counter space that holds up to eight people where you can take some pasta-making classes. You may have tasted their gelato before since the frozen treats are sold at Kalaya Thai Kitchen. But now you can just casually drop in for some cups, pints, and push pops without having to order bowls of massaman nua to get to them." - Candis R. McLean

Our amazing kids gave us a gift certificate for Christmas and we were finally able to clear our schedules to go this weekend... and we are so glad we did!! Olivia was a delight!! So knowledgeable and friendly! Our pasta may not have been perfectly shaped (we are artistically challenged!) but it was delicious. The sauces she made were outstanding! We're hoping to hire them for a private family event coming up! Thank you again for an amazing night!

The food was delicious and Olivia was a fantastic host! My boyfriend and I were not sure what to expect but had a fantastic time. We made three different types of pasta and had both a pesto and a ragu sauce. We had fun—it was a lively, friendly, and intimate group of 8. Olivia did a great job explaining and teaching, while also keeping all 8 of us engaged. I’ve had other cooking classes, which were intense and a lot of preparation. This was way more relaxed and enjoyable.

I HIGHLY recommend taking the pasta class. Me and my group had the best time. Our chef was absolutely lovely and took his time helping us all get it right. The food was delicious 10/10 I had to ask for the recipe for that pesto sauce in the end because it was the best I’ve had.

Olivia is fantastic. She was engaging, funny and is very passionate about the food and it's history. The pasta was delicious and both the Pistachio Pesto Sauce and the San Marzano Tomato Sauce were amazing. The Gelato was truly the best I have ever tasted. What a fun-filled afternoon!!

My husband recently attended a cooking class at Home Made By Bruno, where we were warmly greeted by Janine, the owner. Upon arrival, we were treated to an assortment of meats, cheeses, and wine. The class commenced with straightforward pasta-making techniques, making it an ideal experience for beginners. Throughout the session, Janine shared her family's rich Italian heritage and her passion for hospitality. She also recommended her favorite ingredients from local specialty food stores. Following the pasta preparation, we had the opportunity to cook and enjoy our creations, paired with Janine's pre-made pesto and red sauce. The evening concluded with a delightful dessert of cannolis. We highly recommend this class to anyone seeking a unique and engaging experience. Supporting a small business owner while gaining valuable culinary knowledge makes this a truly worthwhile endeavor.

Amazing experience. We’ve taken other pasta classes and this has been the most knowledgeable and fun. Unlike other classes you won’t be able to make the pasta dough. However, our instructor Olivia, made some in front of us and there are opportunities to purchase the flour to make at home. The dough has to sit for like an hour so it’s understandable and doesn’t impact the experience. We loved being able to make so many shapes. We learned so much from the class and can’t wait to come back and try other methods. We had the Vodka Sauce and Cacio e Pepe sauce with our meal. Delicious! We left full and happy!

Intimate experience for up to 6. Would be fun for a girl’s day out. Nick explained everything in detail and was very helpful to all. Small group lets everyone participate, hands on! Nick was very knowledgeable about all things Italy. Making pasta is not as daunting once you have good instruction and are given proper tools and ingredients. From the antipasto to the pastas and gelato overall great experience!
