The Best Restaurants in Oceanside, California | Eater San Diego

"This Los Angeles sensation fits right into Oceanside with its breezy vibe and menu of Texas-style breakfast tacos built on fresh flour tortillas like the best-selling Trinity, a mix of eggs, bacon, potato, and cheddar (corn tortillas are also available, if flour is not preferred). Other crowd-pleasers include homemade queso — make it loaded with black beans or brisket, guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo — and a delightful frozen spicy Paloma." - Helen I. Hwang

LA Phenom HomeState Bringing Austin-Style Breakfast Tacos to San Diego - Eater San Diego

"Breakfast taco specialist HomeState is opening its first outpost outside of the Los Angeles region — where it runs four well-loved locations — and heading south to Oceanside. Founded by Texas native Briana “Breezy” Valdez, the all-day restaurant will be one of the anchors at the Freeman Collective in South Oceanside, a new development that will house six other tenants including Blackmarket Bakery, Northside Shack, Corner Pizza, and Artifex Brewing. Valdez, who went to college in Austin where breakfast tacos are one of the city’s most iconic foods, opened her first LA cafe in 2013 after working at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon. Built with pastured eggs and award-winning flour tortillas made from a Valdez family recipe, her breakfast tacos range from the Trinity with eggs, Beeler’s bacon, potatoes, and cheddar to the egg white-based Blanco with shiitake mushrooms and Monterey Jack. HomeState frequently collaborates with bands and musicians; the current menu features taco creations from singer-songwriter Leon Bridges and the Tijuana Panthers, a Long Beach rock band, with proceeds going to local charities. Other Tex-Mex favorites include migas, a classic scramble with eggs and crisped corn tortillas, alongside Frito pie and a creamy queso dip made with cheddar cheese. Margaritas, palomas, and ranch water, a Texas-style highball with tequila, sparkling water, and lime, are also offered. Its Oceanside spot is a renovated 1950s building just 500 steps from the beach that formerly housed a grocery store. The 2,067-square-foot space, which includes a 816-square-foot patio, should be up and running before the end of the year according to marketing director Andy Valdez, one of Briana’s triplet sisters, who tells Eater that they’re definitely planning on opening more locations in the San Diego area." - Candice Woo

Wow. I say this as a born-and-bred denizen of SoCal with a healthy skepticism for Tex-Mex and a highly discerning taco palate: HomeState was phenomenal. They brand themselves as a Texan restaurant, but nothing I ate here felt overly so. The tortillas are homemade every day (I asked!) and super yum. The Tijuana Panther was my favorite taco. Also, the spicy paloma is what it says it is—deliciously spicy. And above all, the people here were so nice and made sure we were happy and taken care of. Highly, highly recommend!

Google
My friend and I visited this place for brunch, and it had a great atmosphere. The staff were friendly, and they offered a variety of Tex-Mex-style tacos, which made it difficult for me to choose. Ultimately, I ordered the Blanco, Don't Mess with Texas, and Pecas tacos. They were all well-seasoned and delicious including their salsa. I really enjoyed my brunch today! 😋😋🌮🌮

Google
Fantastic Texas style flour tortilla breakfast tacos. Get the ones with the refried beans or add. The flour tortillas they are making fresh right there are so amazing. The ground beef anytime taco was so good someone had to order another one, jealous it was fat should have got one too... The owner was so nice came over to say hi and gave the kids a cookie. Thanks!

HomeState restaurant offers delicious food and excellent customer service! We visited with our kids, and the staff served us exceptionally well. The ambiance was welcoming and perfect for families, making our dining experience truly enjoyable. The menu features a delightful variety of dishes, all of which were flavorful and satisfying. We especially appreciated the staff's attentiveness and kindness, ensuring we had everything we needed. They were very kid-friendly, making it an ideal spot for families. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a great meal in a friendly atmosphere!

Google
The food was delicious! The tacos were fresh and flavorful. The staff was welcoming and provided great recommendations. When our order took a bit longer than expected, they kindly offered two hibiscus teas and chocolate chip cookies as compensation. The atmosphere was fantastic, with a vibe that reminded us of Austin, Texas. I’d definitely come back next time I’m in San Diego!

Google
I came in for a quick two tacos and they were they were some of the nastiest tacos I’ve ever had. The meat was really dry and salty on my Tijuana panther tacos both my taco had beans or cheese oozing everywhere making them terribly messy to eat. My tortillas were cold and the staff took an incredibly long time to finish my two tacos sat there for almost 15 minutes for two tacos.

Google
Had the Trinity Tacos (eggs bacon and potatoes) and their Crispy Potatoes with Queso. It hit the spot. A great play on breakfast and mexican food. Servers were great.

Google
Oh my goodness!!! 😍 such a beautiful atmosphere and their food! The Chicano Batman taco and chicken breakfast taco are DELICIOUS! I’ve never had Tex-Mex before and now I know what I’ve been missing! The flavors are amazing and more robust than traditional Mexican food. I highly recommend HomeState! The workers are helpful and friendly, please show them kindness as they did just recently open. The line to get in took about 20/25 minutes but it was well worth it!! They even offer umbrellas so you can have some shade while you wait! We will be back!! 🫶

Yelp
Hubby and I decided to grab brunch here for our one day stay in San Diego. We'd always wanted to try one of their locations but this one popped up in front of us so we swung by. Parking is a bit tricky - we got lucky and snagged a neighborhood spot when someone pulled out. (Make sure you are good at parallel parking!) We strolled over and were relieved we missed the lunch crowd that showed up 10 minutes after we arrived. The line went out onto the curb and went non-stop the entire time we were there. Whew! I ordered the Neches and Trinity while hubby ordered the Trinity and Don't Mess with Texas. We also shared the Frito Pie in a Bag and the chips and queso. Your food is served with two squeeze bottles of salsa (green/red) which honestly, felt really good lol. To have your own personal salsa in such an easy dispense way is amazing. Everything tasted so good. I thought I made an error in only ordering two tacos but honestly, I was good after those and the extras we got. Food came quickly and EVERYONE was nice and friendly. More than a few servers came by to check on us which I understand is normal for them. They had a lot of seating outdoors as well as indoors. We opted for indoors because it got a little nippy outside on the shaded patio. It's a cute place and felt very expansive with the tall ceilings and the windows letting in a lot of light. Definitely a great stop for us and won't be our last. Check it out!

Yelp
Yelped "Mexican food" in the area and came upon this cool Tex-Mex taco place! Ordered the chicken taco, brisket taco, Tijuana Panther (queso on the side) & Ft. Worth tacos (tomatillo ranch on the side), all on handmade flour tortillas. The cashier was pretty spot on in terms of how many to order, at least for myself. She said most people get 2 tacos. I was pretty full because they do give a pretty generous portion of meat per taco. My hubby maybe could have gone for another one. The brisket was just ok- not very flavorful. It required a lot of red and green salsa (which were both tasty) to give it flavor. Would not order this one again. The chicken one was pretty good! Good flavor and nice and tender. Would order again. The Ft. Worth was very good- it was basically the chicken taco with bacon and tomatillo ranch (on the side for me). It was very flavorful. Hubby said he was glad I ordered the ranch on the side because he didn't particularly care for it. The Tijuana Panther was just ok- again, the brisket wasn't very flavorful. The queso did make it a little better though, said Hubby. The handmade flour tortillas were excellent and probably the best part of the taco.

Yelp
I decided to stop by here on the way home from San Diego! I heard about HomeState from an old YouTube video and it was always on my list of must try's. Ambiance/Service: This is a fast casual Tex mex place that specializes in breakfast tacos. There's plenty of seating but it does get chilly in there so bring a jacket. The woman who helped us was informative and kind, giving her suggestions on what to order. Food Consensus: My family and I ordered an array of breakfast tacos. I ordered the Trinity and Pecos. The tacos weren't bad but they weren't the best either. Out of the 2, I would recommend the Pecos. I also tried both the corn and flour tortillas and I think the flour is superior to the corn. The corn tortilla was a bit dry for my taste. I think at $4-6 per taco, the price point is a bit steep based on the size and quality of the taco. I would like a bit more filling in the tacos and flavoring on the salsas. I think my expectations were a bit higher because of the video I saw. I would go if I needed a fast and easy quick bite but I wouldn't go out of my way to get homestate.

Yelp
Good breakfast tacos. Small but at a good price they offer flower and corn tortillas which was nice. The ambience was casual and friendly. The family really liked this place. Maya was helpful.

Yelp
Place was super cute and service was good! Got a bunch of tacos - Trinity, Guadalupe, and Emo's. The Emo's was a really good vegetarian option. Kids loved the Trinity! Outside seating was really nice, too.

Yelp
A taste like Torchys but closer to home. I've had HomeState on my list for quite a while, but I'm rarely in Oceanside. When I found myself in the area, I knew I had to visit! The breakfast tacos are absolutely delicious! I ordered the trinity (egg, cheese, bacon and potato) and Chicano Batman (soy based picadillo, guac and potato). The trinity was my preferred taco and I think I'll stick to the breakfast menu moving forward, because they were so good! I got one taco on flour and one on corn and I definitely preferred the flour. You can tell its homemade and was the perfect chewy and fluffy?! I wish I had bought a bag of tortillas just to take home. The chicano batman was good as well, but the meat got a little saucy and overwhelming and I liked the breakfast taco more. They pair them with delicious salsas though. The queso was a nice addition to the mix and we were offered more chips when we finished our tray. Even though this is an order at the counter situation, the folks were so friendly and attentive.

Yelp
We have been wanting to try this place for a long time! Slightly disappointed at our tacos... our potato tacos all came out COLD! like freezing cold. When we addressed this with a staff member they told us "they always come out cold." I'm sorry but I've never heard of a cold taco and the correct response would have been to make it right instead of getting defensive. The only thing we enjoyed were the nachos. Won't be back!

Yelp
My husband and I rarely go to Oceanside but we thought to try this place out. SERVICE - This spot offers counter service where you place your order, grab a number, and find a table. FOOD Ranch Salad - A solid taco salad with a good mix of toppings and plenty of flavor. Nachos - Generously stacked with toppings and had good flavor overall, but the pickled onions dominated the dish a bit too much. Tacos - We tried both the breakfast and brisket tacos, but the flavors didn't come together well. Both felt bland, and nothing really stood out. A mixed experience overall, with some highlights, but we would not go back. There are better tacos elsewhere.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time this afternoon. First let me say, I usually shy away from anything labeled as "Tex-Mex" because I get images of everything being smothered in sauce and cheese. Not the case here at all. This hit a perfect balance of richness and authenticity. Do not sleep on the house made tortillas - so fresh and delicious. Soft and pillowy with the perfect chew. We loved both their red and green salsas. Neither too spicy with amazing depth of flavor. That being said none of our tacos needed anything extra. We tried the brisket taco - tender flavorful beef was the star. The "Don't mess with Texas" which was my personal favorite- the beans combined with the bacon -chefs kiss- smoky, creamy... yum. The picadillo was our least favorite but only because hubby can't handle spicy- I actually enjoyed it but nothing could top the DMWT. Not to be outdone by the crispy potatoes which are my new vice. Get the ranch and throw a little extra green sauce - to die for. The decor is super relaxed and fun. The staff were all so accommodating and friendly. Glad to have a new favorite for our trips down here.

Yelp
Hip taco spot along a cool corridor of restaurants. The Jaguar taco with brisket, potato, slaw and queso is phenomenal. Refills offered for many of their delicious drink options; I enjoyed the hibiscus lime one and refilled it three times. Food came out quickly after ordering at the front by the register. Tacos are delivered wrapped in foil. The queso and chips are tasty. Seriously one of the best quesos I've ever had. The turkey taco which is seasonal was decent. Loads of veg options. They make their own flour tortillas but you can choose corn alternatively if that's your preference. Pretty quick in and out, with good outdoor and indoor seating options.

Yelp
HomeState has my heart. It's not often these days you find a place with good food and good service. This place does both! Food. * Tacos and burritos * Vegetarian options * Chips (not too oily, just right)! * Fresh tortillas. These are so good, you can buy them to-go. But! If you do, plan to eat them in a few days, they do go bad! * There are plenty of kid options! Service. * The hospitality/level of service here is quite memorable. I don't recall the last time someone at a restaurant/working staff genuinely asked me how my meal was. ~and it wasn't just one person that asked, there were 3 ppl that asked. They all genuinely wanted to help, and it's not all that often we experience that. Fresh food, fresh ingredients, and great service. This isn't the case for most places, and they do it right here - which makes it worth visiting. Not to mention, this casual eatery is a great option for the vegetarian in your life!

Yelp
We knew about HomeState before, but didnt know they had a spot in Oceanside. On the way home, we chose to try it out and didn't know there was a grouping of it, and other restaurants behind the popular breakfast spot. We walked in and ordered a number of different tacos. I tried the don't mess with texas with refried beans, bacon, potatoes and cheddar cheese. It was good. The next one was the trinity with eggs, bacon, potatoes and cheddar. There was plenty of meat in that one and turned out to be my favorite. The last was the Guadalupe with eggs, chorizo and cheddar cheese. It was all right. the chorizo wasn't the best out there so I would pass on that but run with the trinity. She had the neches with eggs, refried beans and cheese and it reminded her of home in the morning. Her next one was the Frio with beans and Monterrey jack cheese. Simple stuff but good. I was overall impressed with how all the tacos were and would definitely be down to try their other food for lunch next time,

Yelp
I have heard so much about this place, so when I finally found one I had to jump at the chance to grab a bite. The service was awesome, so friendly, helpful and patient. The vibe was different by too many hard seating but after a while my buns got use to it. The food was good, the only thing I would suggest is do not order the potatoes. The queso dip was superb, the tacos were jacked full of ingredients. Overall the place was a great visit. Ohhh oh oh the tea was perfection.
google avatar

Shreya B.

Yelp
I came here on a weekday morning and it was pretty empty. Ordered the cookie milk iced coffee (delicious) along with 2 veggie tacos while my dad ordered the migas (vegetarian). Food was great and sooo filling. Honestly could do with less beans in the tacos but that's just a personal preference. Love the vibe of the place and the decor. Would definitely be back! So many more things on the menu I'd like to try!
google avatar

Katrina D.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere but very pricey for the size of tacos. They'd be pretty good if they didn't immediately get soggy and break apart from being wrapped up in foil. $18 for a large frozen margarita is also insane. Happy hour has changed- couldn't find the details printed anywhere and had to ask. The girl at the register didn't even know and spent 5 minutes walking around asking everyone who worked there if anyone knew. Finally a guy comes and says $8 off large margaritas and some sort of discount on ranch water but he's not sure what. No food on happy hour anymore. New cranberry margarita was good, but from how I feel the next day I'm pretty sure it's made with everclear. Which makes me even more annoyed that regular price is $18. Sad to say from a Texan missing Tex Mex, but I think I'm giving up on this place.

Yelp
I speak highly of HomeState restaurant, where I recently bought a souvenir which I never do. As someone who claims Oceanside as my hometown, I appreciate the unique vibe that this location brings. The only drawback is the wait on Sunday mornings around 10:00 AM, but it's well worth it. The ordering process is self-service, and seating is first-come, first-served. Despite the crowds and bustling atmosphere, both inside and out, with families and friends gathered together, I thoroughly enjoyed the cocktails, queso and chips, and all the tacos we ordered. I highly recommend a visit!
google avatar

Rihana A.

Yelp
Went in and ordered a potato taco. There were vegan and vegetarian options on the menu. The staff were friendly. There was a live band playing on the patio area. This was as a Saturday afternoon. The taco was good as well as the green and red sauce. They were passing out samples of their homemade cookies. Very delicious. I would go back again to try the nachos.
google avatar

Yelp
We loved this place so much that we came twice in 2 days! Their tacos are to die for. And the service is great too. We tried a handful of tacos, but my favorite was the Tijuana Panther. It featured brisket and bacon. The flavor was amazing. I also loved the Hibiscus Limeade. It was super refreshing and I loved that it came with free refills. Super great touch. Definitely such a cool place to visit and we'll definitely be back next time we're in town!

Yelp
Stopped here at the 63 mile mark of our bike ride from OC to SD and I really like the outdoor seating that allowed us to keep an eye on our bikes and easily fit 17 people. Servers were super nice and on point, food came out quick and it was bomb. I got the trinity which was exactly what I needed at the moment. I also ate half my gfs Tijuana panther. The green sauce is amazing but then I was too full and felt like yacking for like an hour after while we were riding. Would definitely come back.

Allison B.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh food for any time of day! Love going for dinner and getting the Ranch Salad, tacos (even breakfast), and the Taco in a Bag. Great addition to Oceanside and North County SD
google avatar

Sarai Z.

Yelp
Their burritos are soooo gooooooooooood!!! They serve you the burritos with sauce containers to try. Green and red. Both salsas are so good!!! The service was so fast too! The employees are super attentive and nice. The ambiance was so cute. western aesthetic. I loved the location of the establishment, its close to the pier. Not walking distance but driving distance its about a 7 minute drive.
google avatar

Yelp
Been here a few times now and it never disappoints. High quality ingredients and preparation with care leads to flavorful, satisfying items. Nothing beats a good mix of tacos with an iced coffee around brunch time here. Never feel bloated or sluggish after eating here also. Indoors is nice but I love enjoying my food on the patio and enjoying the South O weather. Not a place you'd go to for authentic Mexican, so make sure you don't come in with that expectation. Just really good Mexican-INSPIRED eats
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
My favorites here are the trinity and the Tijuana panther, both on flour and with the red salsa. I have tried some of their others variations but found those 2 to be the best. I think 2 is plenty for a lunch, but get 3 if you're really hungry.
google avatar

Miranda P.

Yelp
We stopped in for breakfast tacos to-go on Labor Day and had a good experience. The decor is clean and relaxed. The people working behind the counter were friendly and service was fast. The bathrooms were also clean, a bonus. The breakfast taco that had bacon, potatoes, and cheese was sooooo good. Absolutely delicious. I also ordered the taco with chorizo and that was ok. I definitely preferred the bacon one. My children had the cheese quesadilla and liked it. Prices were reasonable for 2024.

Yelp
Come try this.. NOW! Breakfast tacos and regular tacos all day! How was this here and I didn't know? I used to go to the one in LA but so happy it's here in North County. Get any of the breakfast tacos and you won't be disappointed. I like the Guadalupe and the regular I like ForthWorth. Their flour tortilla is GREAT! Haven't tried their corn but I'm sure it's fab. If you want more of a snack, get the queso and chips. Service is fast and there's a lot of room indoors and outdoors! Tips: refill on chips and water is self serve! Come support!!
google avatar

Tiffany V.

Yelp
It was an exciting day when they added HomeState so close to where we live! After our Texan friend raved about it and our LA friends also hold it high, we are happy to strongly agree with the hype. We come here quite often and always end up happy. I usually get the Blanco, Tijuana panther, and whichever other breakfast tacos im in the mood for that day. They're always delicious. Both indoor and outdoor seating is great, as well as the bar where you get to watch the magic happen. Salsas are good, and they have a delicious seasonal spiked eggnog. The service is always fantastic at this oceanside location! All the employees are great and always friendly. Definitely stop by if you're in the mood for tacos, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Service was super friendly at the register. Thrilled to come back again, food was soooo good!!!!

Yelp
Love love love this Tex Mex spot after a solid workout! The staff is a very nice and attentive. The vibes of this restaurant is fun and lively. The colors are vibrant and the food is delicious so 10/10 experience! Someone made a comment that my nachos looked like it was 12 lbs. Of course I ate it all! Love those pickled onions and jalapeños! Queso will have me on the floor any day.
google avatar

Yelp
Get ready to indulge in a fiesta of savory delight. This place is the cheese to my queso. The spicy chicken queso was zesty and the potatoes with loaded queso sauce was primo. The chips, taco shells, and queso shells are all homemade. And to watch them make the shells or chips homemade is a flipping good time. The ambience is all family. There are even pictures in frames on the shelves with family members. Even though two of our food items got overlooked of being made, the server made sure we were satisfied with our meal and apologize for the oversight and there was no charge and a free giant cookie to sweeten the deal. How can you not melt with joy? They have the right spice babe

Yelp
Loved this place! Came here because someone I follow online loves this place and is from Texas, and said it made her feel at home. I loved all of the vintage decor inside, super cute. The place was clean and the staff were friendly. We ordered breakfast tacos and a side of potatoes and queso. We all loved our tacos, my mom loved the tortillas and bought a pack to bring back home. You can see them making the tortillas fresh. The potatoes were well seasoned and crispy. I also love that they use pasture raised eggs in their breakfast tacos! I would definitely come back and try their other dinner/lunch offerings.
google avatar

Yelp
Really great spot. The food was excellent and the homemade tortillas were on point. We had the frito pie, a cowboy cup, chips and dip, and the brisket tacos. Everything was delicious and the beer was cold. Great staff and cool decor. Enjoy!!!

Yelp
This really shows that you can't trust food influencers on IG. I saw a video saying this place was good and was super underwhelmed when we were served our food. TLDR; food influencers are not honest and it's not worth coming here! We ordered the brisket and Picadillo tacos and the queso dip. Both were bland and seriously lacking in size. For the price you would think the tacos would be a lot larger but they are tiny. You could buy 2 tacos for the price of one at any other place in SD. The tacos were saved by the bottles of salsa they give you which I doused it in since they weren't very spicy and added some little flavor. The queso dip was good but also nothing amazing but it did come with fresh chips. I'm surprised this place gets any business at all but when I was there, there was a decent amount of ppl eating on their patio. They have a small lot that is shared by the 3 businesses there. Parking signs say "Freeman collective" parking only which is fairly confusing if you didn't know the restaurants were part of said Freeman Collective.
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute breakfast place in O'side! They have some great breakfast tacos for a very reasonable price. Coffee is good too! Lots of outdoor seating if you have pets. My ONE complaint is that we got charged $1.50 for ONE slice of avo. Still worthy of a 5-star, but you can't be serious with that portion?
google avatar

Sheila C.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this place. I lived in TX for a few years and one of my favorite foods were the brisket breakfast tacos. Although the brisket tacos were very good, the brisket lacked flavor and the meat could have been browned a little more. The other taco I tried was good too, no egg, but with potatoes. The spicy Paloma though, kicked butt. The service was OK front end, but outstanding on the back end. They had run out of chips for the chips and queso, though after ordering potatoes and queso, I saw they still had a tub of some chips left. I asked one of the servers if I could have some, since I made a long trip to eat here. She was very accommodating and immediately served me a basket full of chips! A+ to her! The restaurant is very cute, reminds me of any place in TX. Not sure I would make a trip out of my way again for this place again, but I may go in if I am in the vicinity.

Yelp
Not gonna lie kinda surprised this has the rating it does. Got 3 tacos and queso and it just was bland and nothing special... I can make them better at home... I'd personally pass if ur trying to find something unique and special. Glasses were kinda dirty had to sort through a few before finding a perfectly clean one. The customer service was good though they're nice.

Yelp
i've been driving by this place for a while and finally decided to come by and try it. the person who took our order was nice and welcoming. i ended up getting the brazos and blanco tacos. these were good for tex/mex tacos, i just wish the salsas were spicier and had flavor. definitely felt like they were on the watery side. still a cute spot and i would come back.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Love this place. It's casual and the service is always super friendly. The food is good, prices are good, and the margaritas are BOMB. It's like a boozy slurpee minus all the crap that usually goes into frozen drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here, had a great experience with my family for an early morning breakfast. I had an order of the Andy's Migas with chorizo and others in my group ordered an assortment of breakfast tacos. Everyone was happy. Service was very friendly, and the space was nice and clean. Don't come in expecting San Diego style Mexican food, and I think it would be unfair to do so. This is Tex-Mex and they do it well. I had a great cup of drip coffee with my breakfast and I really liked the salsas, too! I will be back!

Yelp
Saw this LA restaurant online and to my surprise, they have opened a location in Oceanside so we took the 40-minute drive from downtown to try it out. They open a bit late for a breakfast spot (10 am) which was one of my first observations. The ambience is very cozy, well-lit, and the place is spacious--both indoor and outdoor. We got three breakfast tacos: chicken, guadalupe, and pecos. They're not the biggest in size so one person can easily finish two. My husband liked the pecos one which has brisket in it and between the chicken and guadalupe, I liked the first one better. Guadalupe could use more chorizo bits as you can barely taste it under all the egg. You can choose between flour or corn tortilla which are both amazing eitherway. We also got their iced cookie oat latte that tasted like actual cookies were seeped into it. Very interesting. The star of our whole order was the crispy potatoes and queso! Definitely consider getting it as a side. Overall kind of pricey but something I would expect from a somewhat modernized restaurant. Food was just okay but not bad.

Yelp
Super solid breakfast taco spot. My Fiancé and I are suckers for flour tortillas so we love how they make their own, fresh in-house. Let's not waste time, i'll rank each taco we got from our most to least favorite. 1. Don't mess with Texas - Fire. The beans have sooooo much flavor and went well with bacon, potatoes and cheddar. 2. Trinity - one of our faves. The harmony of the crispy potatoes, eggs and bacon was perfect. Tbh could be a tie between this one and the don't mess with texas. 3. Potato - Solid vegetarian option but if you want to add meat, you can do so for an extra charge. I highly recommend asking for the chili brisket to add. 4. Tijuana Panther- The brisket was very good but the meat ratio was a tad bit on the heavier side, needed a little more balance. Good nonetheless. 5. Guadalupe - Too much egg but i'd be willing to try it again if the egg : chorizo ratio was more balanced. Definitely needed more chorizo but I see the potential. 6. Blanco - Def our least favorite. Tasted pretty basic. Prolly wouldn't get again tbh unless we added the chili brisket of course lol. Get the queso with chips! I recommend dipping some of the tacos in the queso when you want to change things up. We honestly thought the salsas were kind of meh so we ended up using the queso more. Spicy Palomo margarita - Really good and strong. The small size got me pretty loose and my asian glow came out to party. Overall, we had an amazing first time visit. Shout out to Gilbert for putting my lady and I on some tips and for being hospitable. The staff were very friendly and we're looking forward to our next visit!

Yelp
Lots of taco options! Something for everyone. These are not the typical tacos you find in the area. More Tex-Mex which is a nice change up. Love the chips and queso! The brisket is amazing as well! Always hard to choose a beverage - the cookie milk coffee 12/10, Paloma 10/10, and they have beer on draught in an ice-cold glass. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors. Order at the counter and find a seat. Staff will bring your food and get you anything else you need. Bathrooms are nice and clean.

Yelp
My friends and I tried the trinity, brisket, Guadalupe, Emo's, and crispy potatoes with queso and honestly was pretty disappointed. The potatoes and the trinity tacos were EXTREMELY salty and almost inedible. On the other hand, even though the eggs were salty they were pretty well cooked and the queso was pretty good. It just seems like the entire batch of potatoes had way too much salt on it (both the taco potatoes and the separate order of potatoes were salty). The service was great though and the parking was pretty easy!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place more. I was just in Austin and was hoping to find similar food here. Sadly, this did not measure up. Gimme a Torchy's any time over this. The good - The people were nice. The service was quick. The chips were good. The not so good - Everything could have used more flavor. It was bland. Even the salsa. Nothing was bad per se, just disappointing. Even the queso lacked flavor, and I just don't know how you'd accomplish that feat. I had the brisket taco and the chicken taco. Also just kinda lacking in flavor. Textures? Fine. Looks? Fine. Heat? Non-Existent. Also, how do people keep charging several dollars (3 in this case) for a can of soda? Is there a soda tax in CA that I'm unaware of? Or is it supposed to be a deterrent? Sigh.

Yelp
I was really excited to try HomeState after seeing news about their opening and made it a point to stop by the next time we were near Oceanside. It's a really cool restaurant with a nice interior and a backyard Summer-BBQ vibe at their patio area. You order at the cashier and they will bring it out to you. Service was fairly quick and our tacos came out in about 10 minutes. We ordered a lot of different tacos since it was hard to narrow down to just a few choices. They also provide a bottle of red and green salsa to accompany the tacos. We ordered all of the tacos with flour tortillas which are made-in-house. The tortillas were definitely a highlight of the taco; a nice bite to them. We got the Blanco, Comal, Picadillo, Chicken, Brisket, Trinity, and a Tijuana Panther. The Tijuana Panther was the best overall one since it combined a lot of the best parts of other tacos into one. The Blanco, which has shittake mushrooms, was interesting but probably my least favorite. Everything else was just okay. The flavors were good and the salsas helped, but overall these tacos are just okay for me. I appreciate that they are different Texas-style tacos compared to the Mexican-style tacos that are popular all across San Diego. One other thing with the tacos was that there actually isn't a large variety of unique choices. Yes there are a lot of different tacos on the menu, but the differences between them are so minimal with some having cheese/no cheese, beans/no beans etc. So from that perspective you might as well just get the tacos that have the most stuff in it so that you can maximize the flavor.

Yelp
HomeState is hands down the place to go for breakfast tacos in California. If you've been searching for an authentic taste of Texas in the Golden State, look no further--this spot delivers the real deal. HomeState manages to capture the heart and soul of South Texas, offering what I consider to be the best breakfast tacos you'll find anywhere outside of the Lone Star State. The breakfast tacos at HomeState are not just good--they're authentic. Each taco is crafted with a balance of simple yet bold flavors that are a staple of Tex-Mex cuisine. Their fluffy eggs, savory meats, fresh tortillas, and a touch of perfectly spiced salsa bring to life the iconic taste of a true Texas breakfast. Whether you go for the classic bacon and egg or venture into the rich, flavorful combinations like the "Trinity" (eggs, cheese, potatoes), each bite feels like a trip to a Texas taqueria.

Yelp
Granted I did not see the salsa until I finished my tacos, the chicken taco was ok. The flavor itself was not a ton without the salsa, but the portion size was huge. Service through online ordering was smooth, and it looked like a nice interior.

Yelp
Second visit, first time was a Yelp event. I Have been wanting to return & so glad I had the chance! Everyone here is always so nice and full of smiles! It has a relaxed ambiance with cool ocean breeze, very relaxing. And the food is good! Ordered: chicken anytime taco & potatoes & queso w/ black iced tea. Very satisfied with my lunch :) their potatoes & queso are so good imo I came back just for them ;) Ordered the chicken anytime taco this time, ordered the brisket anytime taco the first visit. I'm very supposed of the feedback regarding the chicken taco as I preferred it over the brisket taco. Definitely my preference & happy they have options for everyone's flavor palate. Looking forward to returning for another taco flavor & potatoes w/ queso.

Yelp
NEW and worth it. I was home for the summer and came here three times. It just opened and I can't get enough. We have tried it all. The queso is great. The brisket taco is my favorite. $5 a taco is a lot to me being from the south but I was willing to pay it. Mexican coke is just a bottle of coke cola but at $4 a bottle, I just got water the next time. I did try There is an indoor and outdoor area. Right now there is plenty of parking but once the bakery opens you might have to park on the street. Dogs are allowed and they water cups for them. July 16-Aug 12, 2023.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this spot for sometime, was wanting to try their breakfast tacos. Finally got a chance to go but actually opted for the salad with the tomatillo ranch. It was delicious! The service was really great and the place is really cute and comfortable. I will be back for the tacos next time I'm in Oside!
