Hon’s Wun-Tun House Review - Chinatown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Hon’s Wun-Tun House has been a go-to for wonton soup for more than 40 years, and we’re glad they’ve stuck around for so long. It’s a Chinatown spot ideal for a quick lunch and serves generously filled pork and shrimp wontons with stringy noodles and a supremely slurpable broth. There’s a range of meat options, too, but we like the semi-sweet BBQ pork and the fall-apart beef brisket. In case you’re not feeling broth, wontons are also available a la carte (get the Sichuan ones for a bit of that mala kick ), or just take some ready-to-cook wontons to go. The crispy scallion pancakes are a great appetizer, if you want to lengthen your meal, but you’re more likely to be in and out of this place in twenty minutes flat. " - Ricky Rodriguez

One of the best Chinese noodle and dumpling places we have ever been to! We had a late breakfast / early lunch the first time and everything was so good, we were back for dinner within a week. The soup dumplings (xiao long bao) were made to perfection - the dumpling skin was soft, thin and not too chewy and the broth inside the dumplings was divine. We also tried the thin rice noodles in soup, egg noodles in soup and salted fish with tofu and chicken in a clay pot. Everything was just delicious. The Hong Kong style milk tea was authentic and tasted like it came straight out of Hong Kong. Service was friendly, efficient and wonderful. One previous review mentions a lady who was rude and demanding - she was our server the second time we ate there and she was super nice. She didn’t push us to order anything we didn’t want and never once asked for a tip/bigger tip. It’s a shame we don’t live in SF, or we would be eating here at least once a week!

Came on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. There was quite a bit of people waiting. Took at least 30 minutes to get seated for a party of two. Ordered spicy wontons, signature wonton noodle, hot & spicy soup (cup/no meat), green onion pancakes, and shrimp & leek rice rolls. The best was the spicy wontons and then the wonton noodles. The hot & spicy soup was so sour that it made one of my eyes twitch. The green onion pancake was okay and the rice rolls wasn’t as smooth as I thought it would be.

Hon’s Wun Tun House is an absolute gem in San Francisco. I tried their beef brisket noodle soup with wontons it is rich, flavorful, and comforting. The dumplings are handmade right in front of the restaurant, and you can watch the process through the glass, super fresh and incredibly tasty. We also tried the curried fish balls, which were good, but the soup dumplings stole the show, absolutely excellent! I still can’t get over how good they were. But the real highlight for me was their Hong Kong iced tea. It was so good that I ended up coming back every single day during my 6-day stay in San Francisco. Truly top-class. Service is quick and efficient. While the staff don’t speak perfect English, communication is smooth enough, and they’re attentive and helpful. The place is always busy, which is a great sign of how good their food is. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for authentic flavors and a satisfying meal.

I found this place on TikTok, and it definitely didn't disappoint! I'd always wanted to try dim sum, and I'm so glad I got to experience authentic dim sum here. There was a worker right in the window, and you could watch her making the dumplings by hand. This isn't the spot to go for stellar service, as they're extremely busy, and there was about a 15-minute wait – but it was absolutely worth it. I ordered the signature won ton soup, and it was so good, I wanted to drink every last drop! I also tried various dumplings, and they were all delicious. My wife doesn't often venture out of her comfort zone, but she loved the sweet and sour chicken. I was truly mind-blown by it. It must have been cooked in a tempura batter and was perfectly crispy, then tossed in the sauce and served immediately. I was shocked because it's usually soggy from sitting in the sauce for a while. It truly felt like a home-cooked meal.

Google
DISGUSTING. Restaurant from hell. Do not eat here. The food was very poor, it even smelt appalling. The vegan meal we ordered came with pork dumplings and when asked the waiter denied being informed a vegetarian meal was ordered. The beef brisket soup had no beef. It came with just fat and bones and the manager admitted this was not what they advertised. The spare ribs also came as pure fat it made me want to vomit. The manager screamed at us to pay the full price banging on the table with the bill. We said we would be happy to pay half as a gesture of good will and she said we can on the condition we pay cash or she would call the police. Being tourists we do not have cash to pay so she conditioned yelling and trying to intimidate us and took photos of us. They said they had the right to take the photos and refused to delete them. Utterly horrific.

I ended up ordering to go because there was a long wait. Even my to-go order took about 30 min. By recommendation, I ordered the Shanghai pan-fried soup dumplings. They were delicious. I also ordered the salt and pepper tofu. It was just okay. I wouldn’t order that again.

Walked in as a single diner on a Sunday afternoon about 3pm, and the place was packed. Waited about 5 minutes, and I was given a 2 seat table with a side view of the kitchen. The table was still very wet from being wiped with an overly damp towel. Hot tea and ice water brought out. On this visit, I tried the shrimp and yellow chive rice roll and noodles with beef tendon. I should have ordered the beef stew instead. My mistake. Still, a decent bowl of noodles with plenty of volume, and the shrimp were massive and plump and the rice flour roll was soft and yummy. I couldn’t finish the rice roll, so took half home. The atmosphere is of clanking ceramic dishes. Would be nice to pipe in some music. Any kind of music. Even elevator music would create some basic atmosphere especially when it’s busy. Delicious though, and will be back to eat $16 wonton noodles again.

Google
Simple wonton dishes. The food came out fast, tasted delicious as one would expect eating Chinese home cooked food. Their fresh soy milk was a nice pleasant surprise. We ordered BBQ pork over rice and Sichuan Spicy wun-tun and enjoyed every last bit. Service was on the slow end because there was only one staff member for the entire restaurant.

Yelp
Cozy & delicious is how I would describe this restaurant. We went right before the lunch rush so we were seated relatively quickly. The staff was so efficient with taking orders and drinks, and the kitchen was poppin' (open concept right in the back). I especially loved the vibe - a mix of families, friends, couples, tourists - it really contributed to the energy of this place. We ordered the wun tun beef noodle soup, soup dumplings, and the beef chow fun just for the two of us since we were visiting from Hawaii and wanted to try all the best things. It did not disappoint! The broth for the wun tun soup was so fresh and authentic; the soup dumplings were piping hot and tasty; and the chow fun was cooked to perfection (my personal favorite). I would go back time and time again if this was in our Chinatown, it was so delicious!

Yelp
So happy we came to eat here. The food was amazing and the variety was innumerable. You will find what you want or get multiple dishes and share. I ordered H3. Shrimp Chow Mein. It was delicious. I also ordered the green onion pancakes as an appetizer they were good... I asked for some sweet & sour for dipping and that added to the flavor. Seating was fairly quick (15-20 min), busy but great environment, service was fast & friendly.

Yelp
I discovered Hon's Wun-Tun House in San Francisco's Chinatown through TikTok and Yelp, and I can see why so many people felt compelled to share it. The restaurant offers an authentic experience, and despite having spent years in the Bay Area, I had never been to Chinatown before. I made a special trip to immerse myself in the culture and, most importantly, the food--and it did not disappoint. The food was outstanding, and the customer service was great. Despite the restaurant being packed and the staff incredibly busy, the waitresses were attentive--not just to us but especially to my grandson, who absolutely fell in love with the place. The atmosphere, the flavors, and the overall experience made it clear why this restaurant has been around for over 40 years. Anytime I'm in the area and craving this food, I will 100% stop by. Honestly, even on a day like today, when the craving hits, I'd gladly drive from San Jose to Chinatown just to enjoy these dishes again. The food was fresh, cooked to order, and absolutely delicious. A must-try--10/10!

Yelp
F6. Green Chives & Pork Dumplings (3.0) These taste exactly how you'd expect them to taste! I didn't find anything particularly special about them and they're average price. D12. Green Onion Pancake (5.0) Truly the best scallion pancakes that my husband and I have ever had. They're perfectly crispy and layered whilst being perhaps a smidgen too oily, but no matter. You can't eat scallion pancakes without oily lips. This is also saltier than I'm used to, but it really helped bring out the flavor of the green onions. I can't bring myself to order scallion pancakes at other restaurants now since trying it here. B3. Beef & Cilantro Rice Roll Lunch (4.5) This has more beef than appearances lend itself to. The rice roll was really soft and chewy, making it a pleasant eating experience. I felt that it was lacking in saltiness, but since we ordered a bunch of other dishes that were well seasoned, this didn't bother me. B7. Chinese Doughnut Rice Roll Lunch (5.0) How can you make carbs taste better? You wrap it in more carbs. This is an easy crowd pleaser. You just have to eat it fresh before it gets too hard!

Yelp
Came here over the weekend with my wife based upon her recommendation, as apparently, she comes here often for lunch during work. When we arrived, the entrance area was crazy packed and quite the madhouse. They have a waitlist that we had to track down, and was a good 30min wait for our turn for a table for 2. The lady calling out the names has an accent and doesn't speak very loudly. So it's often hard to hear your name being called out. They really should install either a ticketing system, or have some sort of amplifier for the lady when she calls out names amongst a big crowd of people all waiting for their turn. Added to this, the same hostess seating people was also responsible for manning the front registers and taking orders for take-out. Food also took awhile to come out after ordering, as the kitchen appeared to be backed up with the volume of tickets coming in. Despite all this, it was still worth all the waiting as the food here was delicious and definitely hit the spot! We each ordered different wun-tun noodle soups, as well as some rice rolls to share. I had the Beef Organ Wun-tun Noodle Soup. Which if you're not squeamish about organs, is really good. I can also tell why this place is known for their wun-tun's, as the wun-tuns were made really well and the fillings were jam packed with flavor. The broth was also stewed well, and had a delicious rich flavor profile without being too salty or oily. Would definitely recommend coming here for your wun-tun/dumpling fix. However try to come during the weekdays to avoid the crazy rush.

Yelp
Such good comfort noodle soup here! I always know I'm getting a good meal. The noodles are served so quickly and they have great texture. I really enjoyed my pickled cabbage and shredded pork noodle soup- more thicker round cut vs. the wonton noodles. We also ordered the green onion pancakes and my boyfriend liked it a lot. I personally don't prefer super oily and fried stuff so I had a piece. Good portions for our dishes overall

Yelp
Came for early lunch on a weekend and there was already a line. I put my name on the list and waited for about 15 minutes before getting seated. I ordered the bbq meat and wonton noodle soup plus HK milk tea. They charged extra for a cold drink. The noodles were cooked just right and were super bouncy. The service was so quick! However, I'm knocking down a star due to the extra being charged for a cold drink and for the value of what I get vs what I'm paying for.

Yelp
Nice casual place with lots of seating. Food comes pretty quickly and is solid! Service is quick and friendly. Got the beef won ton soup and the won tons were super flavorful and yummy and great thin skin with big filling! Best part of the meal! The beef was pretty tender, noodles were firm, thin, and good chew!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here with some colleagues! We each ordered a different bowl of their noodle soups. We ordered a tendon & wonton noodle soup, beef brisket & wonton noodle soup, and a mixed beef organs & wonton noodle soup. We all really enjoyed it and service was pretty quick. They are super busy and there are always people waiting outside for a table. I'd suggest to not come during rush hours. Their prices are pretty average for a typical Asian restaurant. I'd probably go to another place next time that's cheaper but just as tasty. Overall rating: 4/5

Yelp
So this place is apparently known for its wonton soup, and yeah, it's always got a long wait. Honestly, I wouldn't wait more than 30 minutes for it. The food is good, but it's the kind of basic Chinese fare you could get anywhere. The wonton soup? Solid, but honestly, it could've used more soy sauce or hot sauce to give it some flavor kick. It's loud, crowded, and the service is quick with minimal interaction -- perfect if you're in a hurry, not so great if you're looking for a warm, fuzzy dining experience. Honestly, I just don't get the crazy hype. It's fine. It's good. But nothing here made me go, "Wow, my life has changed!" Would I go again? Sure. Would I wait an hour for it? Not a chance.

Yelp
Quick service, great staff, and the food is authentic and delicious. This place is a must try

Yelp
Had to stop at one of my favorite wuntun places at the end of my little food tour thru Chinatown. Beef Stew WunTun Soup, the beef is very tender and the wuntun tasted like the 1st time I had. BBQ Pork WunTun Noodle Soup, also very good and the broth is perfect. Salt & Pepper Pork Chop was good but I think it need a little more seasoning. The Shanghai Soup Dumplings are still one of the best and comparable to Din Tai Fung. This place is very busy and I can see why. The service is good as well!!!
google avatar

Marie A.

Yelp
First time here but won't be our last. This place was packed! Long lines means good food! We didn't wait long, you walk in, add your name on the list. Look up reviews on yelp while you wait, and as soon as we were seated, service was great. Ordered right away, and the food came out fast! I ordered the Won Ton BBq pork Noodle Soup! So good! Place looked small but it was actually pretty big inside. There is also a window where you can watch them make fresh wontons or dim sum. Parking was okay, I mean it's China Town, always busy. Street parking is hard on the weekends, so we opted to park at the nearby parking garage. We will be back!
google avatar

Manning L.

Yelp
Still the best won tin noodle soup I've ever had. I get the beef tendon noodle soup and get a separate bowl of the freshly made won tons. The noodles are always firm, the broth just the right flavor and the tendons are soft with a nice flavor. Like the shrimp rice noodles also! Fresh plump juicy shrimp! Always a busy place and be prepared for a short wait for the table

Yelp
Stopped in here for a late lunch/early dinner and we were both happy with our orders. The staff was friendly and efficient and our orders came pretty quickly. I ordered the wun tun with bbq pork and noodles and my friend ordered hot and sour soup and potstickers. My wun tun was nice and firm, which is how I like them. I had one of the potstickers and it was delicious. My friend felt the soup could've been more sour than it was, but she said it was good. Servings were a good size; I probably would have had some to take as leftovers if I had driven, but since I was on public transportation, I ate the whole thing! The thing that was not so great about the restaurant were the bathrooms. They were gender neutral, which is fine, but I think they had just "cleaned" both of them. It looked as if they just took a bucket of water and threw it over everything in the bathroom... sink, toilet, floor, even the mirror. Both bathrooms were totally soaked and it was difficult to use them. But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go!! Next time, I'll try to use the restroom before dining there!

Yelp
Came by for lunch the other day and it was a tasty experience. Parking was easy and plentiful at the Portsmouth SFMTA garage next door. Parking was $8 for a weekend lunch. Uponal arrival, we wrote our name down on the wait list and our table was ready within 10-15 minutes. There were several seats at the entrance of the entrance which was right in front of the front entrance with a rather large draft... There is a dumpling wrapping station that faces Washington street. Staff were wearing masks and disposable gloves. Seating is indoors exclusively and the restaurant seems to have been recently remodeled. Ordering was done by the wait staff on a tablet. Started off with a hot milk tea and it was a large cup of fragrant milk tea less sweet as requested. The wonton beef brisket noodle soup was decent. The wontons were the highlight with super fragrant pork and shrimp. The beef brisket was towards the leaner side. The noodles were cooked to a perfect al dente. The slippery egg shrimp chow fun was delicious. The stir-fried dish had a decent wok hei and came out as a generous portion. The shrimp were bouncy and fragrant. The pan-fried buns were decent. They had plenty of soup and the meat was slightly sweet. The green onion pancake was delicious with super flakey layers. Portion was gigantic too! ~$40/head after tax and gratuity with plenty of leftovers.

Yelp
I was in SF for work and I was staying at the hotel near Chinatown, so naturally I was craving wonton noodle soup. I found this place and immediately headed over after work. The seating area is pretty busy and large, but I was able to get a seat quickly. I ordered the beef brisket wonton noodle soup and HK milk tea. The milk tea was so good and somewhat similar to what I would get in Asia. Shortly after, my food arrived and I was ready to dig in. The soup was so homey and flavorful and the wontons were thin and delicious. The brisket was so tender and paired well with the soup. I think I killed my whole meal in less than 10 minutes and left me satisfied. I really wanted to try their pan fried dumplings but I had no space for it. But it'll be for next time! Definitely come check this place out if you're looking for delicious and authentic Chinese cuisine.

Yelp
We the green onion pancakes, sweet and sour chicken with rice and hometown style stir fried vermicelli. (Preface, I never eat Chinese) Pros - big portions -the vermicelli gave me basic Indian curry vibes flavor wise. Pretty good. - we both thought the green onion pancakes were excellent. Cons - none.

Yelp
A Chinatown classic! My partner and I stopped by over the weekend, craving wonton noodle soup--perfect for the chilly weather. Located right in the heart of Chinatown, we parked in a nearby garage for $7/hour. The place was bustling, with many parties waiting. We put our name down for two and waited about 30 minutes. They have an extensive menu, but we decided on the following: Beef Wonton Noodle Soup (4/5): Served piping hot, the broth was clean yet flavorful from the first sip. While the portion felt a little small for the price and the noodles were way too al dente for my taste, the wontons were the clear highlight. They were generously stuffed with plump shrimp chunks, wrapped in thin, smooth wrappers. Absolutely addictive and delicious! Shanghai Pan-Fried Soup Dumplings (3.5/5): These were good overall--the filling was flavorful, and there was a satisfying amount of soup inside. I also like the the wrapper were on the thinner side. However, I was a bit disappointed that the bottoms weren't crispy at all, which is what usually makes this dish shine. Service was on the slower side, as the kitchen was backed up with orders, and it took a while for the food to arrive. Would definitely return for the wontons if there weren't was much wait!

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday night in the vibrant Chinatown of SF. We were met with quick service despite it pretty busy. We got the soy sauce chow mein, sweet and sour chicken, and the green onion pancake to share. We were there about an hour before close, so there were only pork dumplings left, which I didn't try, but their dumplings are homemade so it wouldn't hurt at all to try during your visit. Overall, great food for a great price!

Yelp
Hon's Wun-Tun House is a very well-known restaurant in SF Chinatown and for good reason. Having been here multiple times, there usually is a bit of wait to be seated at a table but it hasn't been too bad from my experience. There are two locations in SF for this, and I believe that this one is the newer one that looks more modern inside. There is a decent amount of tables in there, and so it doesn't feel like it gets too cramped. Having tried various items here, the food is definitely solid and well-made. The green onion pancake is crispy and savory, the green beans are cooked very well, and the Chow Fun is also great. The rice dishes are also tasty, and enough reviews have talked about the Wuntun Noodle Soup for you to know that they hit the spot. However, the prices here have definitely increased and can make many reconsider ordering some of the dishes here. If you don't mind paying a higher price, the food here is high quality and worth stopping by for.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
Wanted classic chinese food and this didn't disappoint. It was pretty crowded but the wait wasn't too bad. Place looks pretty nice and spacious inside. We got the beef brisket wonton soup, braised seafood clay pot, and shangpai pan fried soup dumplings. The beef in the soup was so tender and flavorful, the wonton were big and tasty, this dish was comforting and we loved it! The seafood claypot was also solid and delicious. Shanghai pan fried soup dumplings were just ok, but not bad for a place that doesn't specialize in it. Would come back to get the wonton soups again if I was in the area! Also must add, the service was really good and the waiter was so nice!! Huge plus coming from a chinese spot in Chinatown!
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
Classic Chinatown establishment. Came in without a wait. Broth is clear and nice. Nice on its own but the chili sauce is a must! Wontons were delicious and I liked the bbq pork. Not sure if it's worth a crazy wait but delicious nonetheless. decent amount of seating but not for large parties really. you would probably have to wait for tables to turn to move them together. I'd like to try their rice noodle rolls.
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
- newly renovated restaurant where Washington Bakery used to be - There's a wait but moved fast - put your name down on the paper on the counter - right next to Portsmouth square parking if you are not down to look for street parking - food came out pretty fast and was good - workers rush you by picking up plates before your done but just wave them off - deep fried soup buns were flavored well - shrimp rolls had a film over it? Giving it a texture on the outside - I loved their hot soy milk - won ton soup was very basic and barely any won ton and char shiew - sweet and sour spare ribs were basic as well - they accept card here
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
We visited during CNY. Good food & good vibe. Freshly made dumplings by the hour. Dumplings wrapping are free for viewing at the glass window. Long lines proven the quality of the food. Once we were seated, the wait time was timely. Interior waiting area can be a bit crowded because of the long lines, they have seats in the waiting area. Dinning seatings do have higher median which provide some sense of privacy from the other tables.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall spot if you want wonton noodle soup. Their soup is really good and has the perfection noodle and wonton ratio. I do wish they added a vegetable like bok choy. I also wish they closed their front door because you could smell people smoking outside.
google avatar

Lucy Y.

Yelp
Can't go wrong with the signature wonton noodle soup! Very filling and delicious meaty wontons with the silky soft wrapping. I couldn't even finish all the noodles as it was a lot. Now the other dish you must also get is the prawns and pumpkin with egg yolk- this is soo good! It's fried and crisp pumpkins which doesn't sound that appealing but it's yummy!
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
Love being able to see kitchen staff making wontons and dumplings from scratch! The thinness of the wonton wrappers were extremely impressive, basically tissue paper. Sichuan spicy wontons were delicious but could've been a little sweeter. The panfried pork soup dumplings were not the traditional panfried pork buns we were expecting, but they were still great nonetheless. Make sure to spoon some black vinegar into the dumplings--the acidity really offsets the fattiness and nuances the flavor. Be warned that they are served piping hot and will spray broth into your face if you are not careful Service is speedy, and the interior is nicely decorated. Definitely recommend if you are in SF Chinatown and looking for authentic Chinese food.

Yelp
Wonton noodle soup could be hotter but solid wonton dumplings and wonton noodles. F3. Shanghai Pan-fried Soup are a must Milk tea with light sugar is my own preference

Anthony H.

Yelp
Very popular restaurant in Chinatown known for the classic won-ton noodles and other Cantonese fares. Usually a long line so we were not surprised when we got there and there was already a long list on the waiting list. The turnover was frequent however, so we only waited a short while. We tried the signature won-ton soup noodle, a shrimp and-chive rice roll, and the fried shrimp and pumpkin with salted egg yolk. All 3 dishes were great. The won-tons had generous stuffing, the broth was full of flavor. The shrimps in the rice rolls were fresh and plump and the rice roll skins were soft and not too thick. The fried pumpkin and shrimp with salted egg yolk were perfectly fried without being too oily. The service staff were efficient and friendly. Even though there were many customers waiting, we didn't felt like we were being rushed. The prices were also reasonable.

Yelp
My husband loves this place. I find his fascination somewhat mystifying. I think he has nostalgia for the good old days when it was just a hole in the wall. Ambience - Feels kinda like a cafeteria. Bright fluorescent lights, bland serviceable tables and chairs. Crowded (at least when we were there - we had to wait a good half hour - it is popular). Service is perfunctory. Server didn't really speak English so that's a challenge if you have a question. Which I did - I asked about msg and was told I could get mushroom soup. Ok! Food - Everyone liked their soup just fine. Nothing amazing - just "good". I had the hot and sour - tasted fine - and I barely had any when the msg headache hit me. It's a real thing for some people and I can tolerate small amounts but this must have been loaded with it. Ugh. Potato pancakes were good although greasy. Rice roll was a big disappointment for the fam - apparently they changed the recipe and they were just kind of a loose mess instead of small well formed rolls. Portions overall were generous. Middle of the road in terms of price. There are two locations - assume the food is the same at both. The one in Chinatown is a lot bigger than the one on Kearny. If you don't mind msg and like authentic Chinese food in a very casual environment- this may be the place for you.

Yelp
3.5 STARS If I didn't know any better, I would have walked out... Staff was hella nice. It was spotlessly clean. It was filled with over 80% tourists. No "secret" menu. IYKYN. Lastly, they have 4 Stars on yelp. I prefer my Chinese food with sticky menus thrown at me, FOH yelling at the BOH, divey non-insta vibes, mixed reviews, and kids at the corner table doing their homework. Hon's Wun Tun House has been a city institution for over half a decade. Haven't visited their OG location on Kearny since high school. They close early so we visited their newer location on Washington an hour before closing. I was surprised to see most of the customers were tourists on a Thursday evening. The Washington location is open for takeout, delivery, and indoor dining only (Kearny location has outdoor seating). M E N U Best known for their wonton noodle soup and green onion pancake but they have an extensive menu including dumplings and Chinese-American dishes. Jook and cheung fun noodles are served from 11 am - 3 pm. They have coconut desserts similar to Melo Melo and Tong Sui. F O O D * F1 小笼包 XLB - Pork Soup Dumplings (6 pc - $15.95) // 4 Stars: https://tinyurl.com/4famvw53 For a Canto resto, the XLB was surprisingly bomb! Thin, chewy skin with savory pork filling and hella brothy. Yes, these babies squirt across the table. IMO, on par with the XLBs from Dumpling Home and Dumpling Story but overpriced and more expensive (minus 1 star). * I10 避風塘大腸 - Chef Rec: Fried Pork Intestines w/ chili peppers ($17.95) // 3 Stars https://tinyurl.com/ywpapum8 The exterior lowkey reminded me of cebu lechon with a shatteringly crunchy glass skin. But, too salty from the fermented black beans and had a strong barnyard funk from possibly not being cleaned thoroughly. I have yet to find fried pork intestines in the city as bomb as Shang Café in Cupertino/San Jose. Please LMK know your recs in the city! * E3 柱侯牛腩雲吞麵 Beef Brisket Wonton Noodle Soup ($14.95) // 3.5 Stars https://tinyurl.com/yr8rjpst Mixed bag. The egg noodles were perfectly al-dente and springy with a cronch. The pork and shrimp wontons were plump and savory. The brisket (rough flank) needed to be braised longer, it was chewy and on the tough side. The pork and seafood based broth was hella salty and hard to enjoy more than several sips. If you like your food aggressively seasoned, it may be fine for you tho. S E R V I C E All female staff was very warm, friendly, and efficient. Despite being busy, our entire order arrived in less than 10 minutes. A M B I A N C E Modern and bustling with ample indoor seating. Views into the dumpling making station and open kitchen. P A R K I N G Easily found street parking on a weeknight after 7 pm but otherwise park at the Portsmouth Square Garage (half block away) for $4/hour. Overall, if you're in Chinatown, Hon's is worth hitting up if you're craving Canto comfort food. Glad I tried their food again for nostalgia sake.

Yelp
The Salt & Pepper Wings at Hon's Wun-Tun House are simply the BEST EVER! Perfectly crispy, incredibly flavorful, and seasoned to perfection. Every bite was pure bliss. If you're looking for wings that deliver on taste and texture, this is the place to go. Great Service, Highly recommend!

Yelp
I've been looking for a wonton spot in Chinatown and was delighted when I got to try Hon's! I ordered a Beef Brisket Wonton Noodle Soup and it hit the spot on a cold morning in SF. I've loved the beef brisket & wonton combination ever since I tried it back in HK and this bowl definitely met my expectations. The tender beef, chewy wontons, and thin noodles made for a beautiful combination. I also ordered some classic HK milk tea & iced lemon tea which were refreshing. It was relatively busy on a weekend morning but service was reasonable enough. There were quite a few parties around brunch time making it a nice and lively. Would come back to try more of their soups!

Yelp
I walked by Chinatown one day seeing Chinese ladies fresh making dumplings, and I knew I had to try it! After its namesake, their wonton noodle soup is of course amazing. The wonton have the thinnest skin and are stuffed with ground pork and plump shrimp. I got the one that comes with beef brisket and the brisket was melt in your mouth and gave the soup a delightful richness. The noodles themselves were springy and cooked to perfection. Besides the wonton noodle soup though, all of their dumplings and baos were to die for! I've rave about Dumpling Home's Shanghai pan fried baos and soup dumplings, but I have to say the ones here have an even tastier filling and equally thin skin! Hon's does get pretty busy sitting at a prime location on Kearny, but I'd say come before 6:30 for dinner and you shouldn't have to wait in line. They have a decent amount of seating and it's pretty spacious for Chinatown as well. For lunch, I saw they have congee and Chinese fried dough sticks as well which will go amazing with their homemade soy milk. I'll have to come for that sometime!

Yelp
2 locations 500ft apart. One is closed on Sun. Din tai fung-ication of dumplings. Dumplings and wonton have the characteristic thin skin without leaking. Much better selection, lower price and similar if not better quality than DTF. Well run business. 50+ years. Almost everything on the menu is best in class. If there is some interpretation better than what they currently have they learn and adapt. If they size up as non asian they give you a cup of ice water when you sit down. If you pass the test they give you hot tea. Good service. The reviews criticizing service are inaccurate. The women are constantly running around at the pace of a brisk walk just below jogging. All speak english/chinese. Very sweet. They wear masks and gloves. Flag down the server by name by using the name printed on the receipt. Hard to distinguish bc everybody wearing masks. Won ton soup: signature item, can taste the dried flounder powder and shrimp shell in the broth. Won tons meaty, like a 1in meatball encased by thin HK style wrapper. Thin noodles. Sheng Jian bao: didn't leak. All same size and very thin. Have no idea how they made these. Characteristic white dough made more white by pan steaming. Potstickers: like gyoza, very thin wrapper. Filling juicy. Not a meat ball consistency, like fall apart ground pork and shrimp filling. Very delicate. Underrated. Not like the common homestyle with the thick chewy dough. Jiaozi: chinese dumplings. Melt in mouth texture in wrapper, very thin. Fillings juicy, they add some gelatinized broth to the filling. Paper thin hand rolled wrappers using metal roller attached to work surface. Lever allows higher pressure to make a thinner filling. Same quality as DTF if not better. Seafood tofu claypot: standard seafood mixture most restaurants use. Basa from south asia, pea sized scallops, shrimp sourced from vietnam. All restaurants do this, but hard to shake the feeling the seafood is toxic at this price point. Key attribute of this braising technique, similar to a le creuset braiser, is the tofu remains hot after eating and warms you up without being bloated from drinking lots of liquid. In the old days there were more styles of claypot, rice with claypot. Those days are long gone except for some of the korean restaurants. Too much labor. Every restaurant has pivoted to things they can make money on. Dumplings, mapo tofu, scallion pancakes. Mostly carbs where there is a higher profit margin and veggies like beans which can be sourced in the winter. The tong sui style coconut desserts are new. They seem to outsource them from another provider. Recurring tour stop for non chinese guests with better food than DTF.

Yelp
I got the sichuan beef rice beef noodle soup, which really reminded me of the guilin noodle soup I'd get at Qin west noodle (in SoCal)!! From the pickles & peanuts to the spicy clear broth, it's safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. Adequate amount of beef, half a boiled egg, and throw in some choy in there and you got yourself a good bowl of noodle soup It looks really spicy but I swear it's actually not that bad!! But it probably is a pretty hefty meal to have first thing in the morning 15/10 would recommend. I need to find something like this near me

Yelp
If you are craving the perfect bowl of wonton noodle soup-this is the place for you. Besides the wonton noodle soup, everything else we ordered was equally as yummy.

Yelp
This is one if those places where the service sucks ass but the food is good. We went on a Saturday morning and the servers said they were very busy because their computer system was down. Took about 10 mins to get a menu after being sat and ever longer to successfully flag someone down to take our order. Some patrons would just grab their own menu from other empty tables. Would def recommend getting the Sichuan Wontons and Chinese Donut wrapped in rice noodle. I would definitely skip the wonton soup, the broth was kinda fishy compared to the chicken wonton broth I'm used to.

Yelp
Tried their honey walnut shrimp and beef and broccoli. Their beef and broccoli was excellent! Beef was thinly sliced and tender. Broccoli was brightly green and gently sauted so that it retained the crunch. Their honey walnut shrimp was good. I think the shrimp could have been a big crunchier but the flavor of it and walnuts good. We recommend it and came twice during our SF trip!

Yelp
My partner came here for lunch and raved about the wonton noodle soup so a couple days later he had to take me cause I got FOMO. The wonton wrapping was so thin and the filling was flavorful and plump. We got the wontons in the Beef Organ Noodle Soup variation. The noodles were thin and springy, the broth had a lot of depth with lots of flavor to it. The beef organs were solid too but the star was the wontons for sure. We also ordered the beef brisket lo mein which came with the same egg noodle as the soup and was more like a dry version of the noodle soup than a lo mein. Came with a side of soup as well.

Yelp
This is a very old restaurant and been here like once only about 25-27 yrs ago. My family always go here but For some reason I was not able to go everytime they plan at that time. Anyways, my nephew who visited from Philippines just reminded us about this place when he used to live here in the US in the late 80s. Wow time flies! And then my niece ordered some beef brisket and wonton soup for me and hubby just recently. Yum!!! And recently we had our Friendsgiving party in SF and we stayed at a hotel overnight then visited and strolled chinatown and we ate here for lunch next day. We ordered beef brocolli, sweet and sour pork ribs, salt and pepper wings and pork ribs. Wonton soup and everything were good. Then we ordered take home of their beef and wonton noodle soup. I highly recommend this place. The service is great coz they are constantly checking on you and your table to clean up. Fast service too! Soooo happy I got to eat here again!

Yelp
Food was great but service was terrible. We came here for a Friday dinner and had to wait maybe about 20mins for a table. Service: 0/5 It was a full house, but there were 6 waitresses waiting tables. -Had to flag down multiple waitresses for water -My clay pot came after my bf was halfway done with his meal -Had to ask multiple times for my bowl of rice -Rice was served in a SCALDING hot bowl which burned our hands when we tried to hold it-- who eats their rice while holding the bowl, I guess??? Food was fine but the lacking service won't have us come back.

Yelp
Walked around Chinatown looking for a spot with the intent of hoping to find a good random spot based on what I saw through the window, patron demographic and any food or menu I could see. I was seated fairly quickly after they had cleaned off a table. They were pretty busy and found out after I sat that it was close to closing time for them. Waitress assumed I was Chinese to start, but was super helpful after she found out I wasn't and helped me make my selection. I think I went with the Won Ton Soup and Pork Xiao Long Bao. Both were super flavorful and large in portion. The chili oil was fantastic as well as their vinegar sauce for the Xiao Long Bao. Glad I was able to find this spot on my walk!

Yelp
We ordered the beef organ won ton noodles and beef chow fun. It is hard to find a place that serves the beef organ won ton. It was good with a very tasty broth and the won tons were good but my complaint is that there were only 3 won tons in the order. Other restaurants have 6 with such an order. My husband said with 3 won tons he would not order it again. I have to agree. The beef chow fun had lots of tender beef and was good but not outstanding. Service was very fast though. They have a system to sign up on a list when you arrive if it is crowded.

Yelp
The wontons are great. They're juicy, shrimpy and light. The soup is pretty nice, but a little bit salty, which is to be expected of most wonton houses. Unfortunately, the prices have been raised upwards of $15 for just a wonton soup. I think they're good quality, but also not the best ones I've eaten around the city. That's just a little more than I'm normally willing to spend. I do appreciate the quickness with which they got it to me, at least!

Yelp
Hon's Wun-Tun House is an absolute gem! From the moment you step in, you can see the care they put into their food. Watching the staff prepare the wontons fresh daily at the window is a treat in itself. The filling is simply incredible. It has a perfect blend of succulent shrimp and tender pork, with a delightful hint of sesame oil that ties everything together. Each wonton is crafted with precision, and you can taste the freshness in every bite. But the experience doesn't stop there because the noodles are equally amazing! You can either get the original thin egg noodles or the wider version. They are perfectly cooked with just the right amount of chew, they soak up the flavors of the broth beautifully. The combination of the fresh wontons and these outstanding noodles creates a comforting, flavorful dish that keeps you coming back for more. I recommend adding some of their chili oil as well to give it a nice kick. The service here is also top-notch, quick and attentive, making sure you have everything you need without any delay. They do get busy so they have a simple system of writing down your name and how many people are in your party on the clip board near the front checkout. The place is spotless, with plenty of seating, so you never feel cramped. It's clear they prioritize both quality food and a welcoming atmosphere. If you're looking for authentic, high-quality wontons and noodles in a clean and comfortable setting, Hon's Wun-Tun House is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This place is a classic Chinese restaurant through and through. The ambiance is exactly what you'd expect, and the service is always fast. I've been coming here for years, and it's finally time to give them the credit they deserve! Their prices are incredibly reasonable, making it a go-to spot for a quick and satisfying meal. When the weather turns cold and dreary, I crave their won ton soup more than anything. It's the ultimate comfort food. Pro tip: ask for beef brisket won ton for an extra flavorful kick! The green onion pancake is a must order! And let's not forget the drinks! Their hot soy milk is perfect for warming up on chilly days, while their cold soy milk is a refreshing treat when it's hot outside. This place is a hidden gem in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Okay so before i write anything about the food, there are two Hon's Wun-Tun (that is not a Google map mistake). We went to the other one first and swapped last minute (mostly because the other location closes earlier) and learned the main difference is that this shop has rice, noodles, and entrees. WE ADORE HON'S WUN-TUN AND WOULD 3000% COME BACK & PARENT APPROVED FROM A FOOD QUALITY STANDPOINT. THEY WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. This location also has slightly "nicer" seating if that matters! The food we ordered: 1. BBQ pork and Wonton noodle soup - the wontons and noodles are ON POINT (I think the best I've had in san Francisco actually). I'm a BBQ pork snob so it's hard to please me in that area but these were acceptable 2. Fried buns - a HIT and came out super fresh 3. Scallion pancakes - pancake layers for daysssss and so crispy For 3 people, this was plenty. The service was also really good and the staff were very friendly. Absolutely would come again!!!
