"Get a taste of this college town at Hoochie’s — it’s Cajun and Creole-forward seafood in a funky, unpolished atmosphere. Looking for plate of oysters (raw or fried) and a beer to pass the afternoon? Go here. And while one can get almost any kind of fried seafood and French fries plate that can be imagined, the shrimp cocktail and ceviche are excellent and worth trying." - Courtney E. Smith

Fried catfish, shrimp, hush puppies and steak fries was very good. Catfish was full slabs, not nuggets, which I really enjoy, loved the cornmeal batter on the fish. Huge portions. Wife enjoyed her salmon salad, salmon was a bit overcooked but very tasty. We will be back for a boil in the future.

What a wonderful little surprise in the middle of Denton!!! We ordered a bit of everything! Salmon for the kids, which they loved. The oysters tasted so fresh, no grit! Really well cleaned. Had the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail, it was SPICY and delicious! The fried okra had a nice hearty cornmeal batter and didn't crumble when we ate it. My husband had the fish of the day, can't remember what it was, but it was also good and tasted fresh! Will 100% be returning! We have already told our friends and family about it!

Big fans of Hoochies! We come here for seafood and drinks, it checks all those boxes. They have plenty of classic beers, sometimes they run out of what’s on draft without clear communication about it. They also offer wine margaritas. I really appreciate the decor, and their unique tartar sauce and hush puppies. That’s what stood out the most for me when I first tried this place. It’s different from most other seafood places and it’s so good! We love the Gulf oysters too! I had never eaten oysters before, didn’t know what to expect at first, but my shellmate knew exactly how to dress them with a little horseradish and cocktail sauce. I’m a big fan now, and this place was a great first experience. I do wish their crawfish were seasoned a bit more, it’s still our first choice regardless. They will sell out during crawfish season and you may not find out until after you’ve waited in line. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a table, but clearly that doesn’t stop us from going and that’s kind of the norm during that time. Super yummy and always enjoyable!

Google
I had a stressful morning, an endoscopy, & dr said eat whatever you want.. so i did!! Hubby did great! The fish tacos were amazing! He had shrimp taco, & the crawfish was perfect! Lemonade was the balance for that spice on crawfish. Great service & i loved the hand-wash station!

Evan Fierro

Google
Coconut shrimp and catfish were very good. Very good serving size of food as well. Definitely will return.

Google
Loved this place! Great 80's music on the stereo, food served hot and fresh! Catfish was absolutely melt in your mouth delicious! The fried green tomatoes were as well. Friend got the coconut shrimp and raved about them! Will definitely be back!

Google
The food was wonderful 👍. My husband consumed two dozen oysters. He said they were not gritty. The catfish and shrimp was grilled and quite tasty. The seasoning was very palatable and not spicy.

Peggy Schall

Google
Small place but nice atmosphere. Also have Angry Orchard on tap! Coconut shrimp was great.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years, don't know why I haven't reviewed it yet. We have tried most everything they have and it is all very good to excellent with good size portions. This is a casual place with a fun atmosphere, good music playing and TVs around. Staff is always friendly and service is good. We travel about 75 miles frequently for this type of food we can't get in our home city.

Yelp
There isn't really anything good to say. You order at a counter and they ask for a tip. I'd recommend NOT tipping bc it goes sharply downhill from there. The service flow is deplorable. You get your drinks as you order but refills are never offered again. You have to flag someone down for that. This is where it gets wild: hubby's food came out first without side of coleslaw that he ordered. The server took the order number off our table. Not sure how she was going to remember where to deliver the rest of the food but ok. 10 minutes later said coleslaw was delivered. 10 minutes later I asked about my food. Eventually food is delivered (hubby is done with his meal at this point). They had one of my sides wrong (brought coleslaw instead of salad) so I asked her to exchange it. 10 minutes later I asked about my salad. Crazy thing is this was happening all around us. The table next to us had food delivered in waves as well but 1 patrons food took so long to come out she asked for her money back. Food was just ok. Not seasoned well. Hush puppies were not good. We Won't be back. Can't imagine why this place has 4 stars. Did I mention do not tip first? There is zero service other than food delivery which is spread out over 30-45 minutes. Buyer beware.

Yelp
Hoochie's Creole and Cajun seafood restaurant anchors our historic 1800s classic north Texas small town square area, which stretches eastwards towards Bell Avenue, at the tiny street Industrial St., across from the iconic Dan's Silverleaf live music venue. Creole, shrimp, and oysters are done to exceptional standards. Wash it down with New Orleans, Louisiana Abita or Dixie beer. Save me some, oh yeah! Cheers, Mark F.

Yelp
Delicious!!! We didn't have a wait and the food was brought to us pretty quickly for a family of five! I highly recommend.

Shauna P.

Yelp
We ordered food from Hootchies while we were enjoying the Jazz band at Steve's Wine Bar. They delivered the food right to our table at Steve's and were very personable. The fried green tomatoes and oysters were delicious. The cornbread was ok, just not our favorite. The sliced bread that came with the meal was great though. We also ordered the shrimp kebabs and the shrimp was way overcooked which made them hard and chewy. The fries and slaw that came with the kebab were not our favorite either. The coleslaw was too sweet for our taste and the fries were rather bland.

Lysette R.

Yelp
I was very excited to try Hoochies, but was severely disappointed. The "full" shrimp basket comes with 8 small, fried shrimp. The steak fries aren't anything special; mostly unseasoned and looked like they could be cooked for longer. At least 1/2 of my basket's shrimp wasn't deveined. The breading was hard. Very unappetizing and we were hungry after. We ended up going to Komodo Loco around the corner for a more satisfying meal. Floors were dirty. Won't be back. If you do happen to go here, it seems like their crawfish boil is the popular item as most tables got that. I definitely won't be back to try it out, try at your own risk!

Yelp
Used to be the best shrimp po'boy on earth! You can tell ownership has changed and not for the better. So sad as I have just lost a regular dining place. Service is still good though...

Kim Sydow C.

Yelp
We used to be regulars. We had a bad experience after ownership changed and haven't been back until today. Wish we had stayed away. Read the recent negative reviews mentioning poor service so I do think have to repeat things. My hubby ordered a shrimp poboy, and his plate arrived quickly. I ordered fried shrimp and a salad. Took 15 minutes and a request to get my plate. Was going to say "it" happens. But they failed to give me my dressing. No apology. Just a look at me like "what a b-I-t-c-h"! Sorry I had to tip BEFORE we ate. At $57, this was one of the most disappointing meals in my life. Review I left with 5 stars a few years back: Makes me miss south Louisiana a little less! Great po'boys. Good boiled seafood. Cold beer. And nice people. Nothing about that review is accurate today Go elsewhere.

Yelp
My wife are currently at Hoochies. As we walked in, we saw a sign that said Catfish and Shrimp Combo $12.95. As we approached the counter to order we asked the young lady what the combo special consisted of? She said 1 piece of Catfish and 5 Shrimp. My wife immediately said I want to order the special. I inquired about an additional piece of Catfish and she said that would be the dinner order for $21. I said ok, I want that. When our orders were delivered to the table my wife had 1 Catfish and ONLY 2 shrimp. I only had 4 on my dinner order, which should have been a minimum of five. My wife approached the counter and was told in ONLY CAME WITH TWO!! I went up to the counter and a young lady, I think was the manager came out and spoke with me. I reiterated what the young lady who took our order told us the special consisting of 1 piece of Catfish and 5 shrimp. The manager told me that the young lady has been working here for sometime and she knows what the special consists of. I asked her if she was inferring that I was lying? She said again, I know she knows what the special consist of. At this point I let her know I was not lying and she could solve the issue by asking the young lady who took our order. The manager then pointed out the special was printed on the electronic menu above. I told her we saw it on the sidewalk sign on the outside of the restaurant. The manager said it was written on the side walk sign what the special consisted of. I told her it was not and she should honor what we were told. She said I can, BUT I WILL HAVE TO CHARGE YOU FOR THEM!! At this point I was done!! Shortly thereafter, we saw a group conversation in the kitchen area. When finished, there was a new young lady taking orders and the manager went outside and the contents of the special on the sidewalk advertisement. It was obvious she found out we were telling the truth all along. But guess what? She did not apologize nor honor what the young lady told us. That is unprofessional and poor leadership!! We are fans of Hoochies and have been since moving to the area in 2014. Whomever the owner is needs to address this issue, not for us, but to make sure it does not happen again. As a business owner, I don't believe in anonymous when you have a concern, therefore my info is below. Dr. Larry D Lewis 469-644-4185

Yelp
The service was really good. Pretty busy on a Friday night. I ordered a shrimp poboy. It's was okay kinda small compared to one you would get in Louisiana.

Asheka J.

Yelp
Sooooooooooo delicious!!! $34.95 for a bunch of deliciousness! We went here on a whim. You walk up and order then find your own seating. It's a small place and is family friendly. Very casual , no dress code. Great place if you want to go eat and chill without all the "extra". I love that it's open so you can see the outside from inside. The service was okay..I guess as much as to be expected from such a casual space. What would you like? This is the cost. Go find a seat. But definitely willing to give you some extra sauce and answer your questions if you have them lol Parking is street parking. You may have to find a space and walk a little. Overall I look foreword to eating here again!

Chris G.

Yelp
Food was definitely hittin for starters I had the Mexican Shrimp Cocktail which had plenty of shrimp and extremely savory! Washed that down with a Dos Equis ( or two) and had the Full Catfish w/ hush puppies. Catfish was on point, portion size was favorable, nice and crispy the fries were good, I gotta say the hush puppies were better!!! Ugh ignore my kid, she went for ... you guessed it, tenders and fries which she mentioned were the best ever

Vijay N.

Yelp
Had a Great shrimp po boy sandwich but a little small for $17 a pop lol. Had to fill up on potato wedges/fries that it came with (I never it fries ) Was at Denton court for jury duty and came here because it was just a mile away

Emily S.

Yelp
Such a disappointment. I use to come here on a regular basis to get their grilled shrimp poboy. It used to be filled with shrimp and super fresh. Stopped going because the quality dipped and the service is absolutely terrible. Well decided to give it another go today. The poboy was awful. Four tiny little grilled shrimp so basically eating a lettuce sandwhich with tarter sauce. Didn't really eat it because it just tasted odd. The kids that work there don't listen and not polite. Dropped an entire bottle of hot sauce bottle on my husbands foot and didn't even apologize. Not a great way to start a Sunday after noon. Also, the sandwhich was almost 20 bucks. Robbery for that little seafood. Do better hoochies. There's a reason your not crowded on a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Joe N.

Yelp
Since Sam has left the only thing that is good is fried food. The boiled and raw seafood is next to awful because they charge so much for gulf oysters $3 bucks per and shrimp lbs $36. My impression is the boiled and raw is so expensive there now that they cannot turn it quick enough to call it fresh seafood. I had a mushy plate of shrimp on a fijita grill. We a few bites and left. It was truly disgusting if you like fresh gulf seafood and should have been thrown out and not served. Please fix what Sam started or prepare for 30% less sales over the next two years. It did recommend Hoochies whole heartedly but no longer can I.

Cathleen S.

Yelp
Let's get a little snack, she said, then inhaled the entire order of coconut shrimp! Yeah, it was that good. Dipping sauce was the perfect sweet/spicy blend, kids loved the fresh cookies, hubs loved his meal as well. Thick-cut fries are worth every calorie. I'll be back!

Becca S.

Yelp
The very lovely man who brought our food, referred to the place as a diamond in a goats butt. I can't come up with something more clever than that, so I am passing it on. Hoochies is awesome. I have been here a couple of times and everything I have had here has been better than expected. I like the open air atmosphere, and my friend and I scored seats outside on a beautiful Saturday evening. The food here is great. This last time we did the ceviche and roasted oysters. The ceviche is made with flounder and I really dig the texture. They are also not skimping on the portions here, it was huge. The roasted oysters were amazing. Perfectly cooked and garlicy. You order at the counter and fins yourself a seat, so if you've got a good sized group, come early.

Doug A.

Yelp
Wasted our money. Boiled shimp were spoiled & smelled it! Hostess at cash register was useless & we will not spend another dime here.

Amber B.

Yelp
Thankful for you #Hoochies... When a 16 year old asks for you & only you for his seafood, that's says alot. Y'all are also so family friendly but offer such a cool little spot to visit on a date night or big group. We love your crab boil paired with a cold beer, or a fried catfish basket. Really idk if there I'd anything on the menu I'd NOT eat & I'm pretty sure we've tried it all. Thanks for keeping denton awesome! We love ya

Samantha R.

Yelp
The food was great, and so was the service. I highly recommend the shrimp tacos. They were so good and lots of shrimp. Their catfish is good, also. the hush puppies are amazing. My new local favorite place.

Veronica B.

Yelp
Okay the name threw me off! This place was delicious and fast. Super clean and quick service. I bought the shrimp basket with the coleslaw. I will be back!

Richard S.

Yelp
Update since it has been years since my first review. I have to drop the rating to three stars. I still like the place but the consistency has been variable the past few visits. Sometimes my order is really impressive and other times the same order is much smaller and missing some items. Example, there are times that the oyster po'boy is loaded and sometimes the po'boy is so skimpy with hardly any tiny oysters. Sometimes I get hushpuppies but lately it has been only sometimes (?). I've had tomatoes left off my dish, wrong side, etc. The please serves GREAT food and the restaurant itself is really nice but I just wish the food would get back to consistent quality.

Vanessa J.

Yelp
5 of us in our party, and not one of us liked it. Everything including the fries (because how can you mess up fries) was nasty. We couldn't make out what the hush puppy tasted like because it definitely wasn't like any other hush puppy we have tasted. It was so disappointing. The catfish was super soggy. Not a single corner was crunchy. Not to mention the awful fishy taste. The boiled shrimp was overpriced and had absolutely no flavor. At least the music was good, but that's about it. This place made me not ever want to try another seafood place that's not in Louisiana or close to a place with fresh seafood. I just can't believe how overpriced this was and how we all hated everything we ordered. The couple behind us left all their food on the table, and I definitely know why.

Sereena J.

Yelp
I came by on a Saturday afternoon to pick up a bowl of seafood to go! Service was great and I was able to find street parking. My gumbo was still warm when I got him 30 minutes later, which was shocking! However, the rice for the gumbo comes in one of those small sauce containers and was not fully cooked with tiny crunchy pieces in it, which gave my food a gritty feeling I didn't love. The gumbo itself was delicious and full of okra, which is my favorite part! I didn't experience many bites of seafood, but I could taste it in the gumbo. I would definitely come back and try their po'boys next time I'm in Denton and maybe just get a cup of the gumbo next time because it was good!

Jimbob J.

Yelp
Visited here a few weeks ago. Price of the food was high, portion small. Waitress did zilch. Not going back, just wasn't worth the price.

Kat Y.

Yelp
Overall decent. The blue oysters were $3 each, some were small, and some had several pieces of shell stuck in the liquor. For me, not worth $20 for 6. The crawfish had an overwhelming clove scent. Not so much the flavor in each mud bug, but you wanted to push the plate away because it smelled way too much like clove. It was perfectly ok. Not good or great. Maybe I'll try them again.

Patrick W.

Yelp
To the girl who asked if I was brothers with the guy I was with last night, when do you get off? My number is 717-572-8296

Lydia O.

Yelp
Came here the other night with my sister and it was pretty good. I got the full fried combo with Chicken Strips and Catfish while my sister got the Catfish Po' Boy. We called ahead and picked up our meal to go. Everything was piping hot and super fresh! Her Po' Boy was PERFECT. Catfish was crispy and well seasoned, bread had the perfect amount of chewiness, vegetables were fresh, and everything worked together! My combo was delicious as well, catfish was on point and steak fries were good! The chicken strips, however, left much to be desired. They were a bit dry and definitely needed a little bit more seasoning to get on the level of the catfish. However, all in all it was solid. I definitely would come back!

Joe K.

Yelp
For the love of god, make your life easier and the customers lives easier and put a water dispenser that's accessible. Also get rid of the stupid backwards bathroom doors. I waited behind a guy who was visibly angry and told me he had been waiting for 20 minutes, he gave up and left. The bathroom was empty......it's not funny, just change it.

Veggie H.

Yelp
The food was great. Came out as it was ready. My beans and rice was piping hot. And the coconut shrimp is the kind of coconut shrimp you want to eat. I tried to green tomatoes and they were not too soggy, Served with an aioli but was better on its own (Got an order Togo) Sam noticed on the crawfish that they weren't as easy to peel as she likes and I'm sure they shorted us on our third pound. all and all it's super chill, open vibe and highly recommend for a relaxing evening.

Zack H.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I got the coconut shrimp and everything was fresh. The fries and hush puppies are also very good. I tried the standard shrimp as well which was delicious. They have a handful of beers on tap and they will open the garage doors when it's nice outside. I recommend you give it a try!

Chris C.

Yelp
Tasty but all the fish comes frozen. $15 for a tiny piece of fish that was frozen before hand is not the best deal.

Zeena C.

Yelp
This ain't it !! There is basically no flavor on the coconut shrimp ! I honestly believe those are not fresh !! Bruh , long Johns has better seafood! I would not wast my money here again

Shannon C.

Yelp
My husband is from New Orleans and was so excited to try this restaurant. Man were we disappointed. I had the boiled shrimp. It was absolutely flavorless, overcooked and just sad. The hush puppies were terrible. Zero seasoning and served with ranch. Hush puppies are always seasoned with onion for starters and served with butter. He asked if the shrimp for the fried shrimp was fresh or frozen. Girl came back and said "it's battered here". Pretty sure it was frozen shrimp. He was so disappointed. Said the shrimp was completely flavorless and unseasoned. Needless to say, we will not be back. Also, the tables were covered with a film that was sticky and gross. Liquid was all over the bar and no one bothered to clean any of it.

Dwight W.

Yelp
Their catfish and shrimp are pretty good. I usually go with the catfish or coconut shrimp. The only thing I don't really care for are the hushpuppies

Ashley V.

Yelp
As lovers of seafood, Hoochie's is our go-to when we're not really sure where we want to dine but know that we're not making food at home. In the six years I've been eating there, I have never had a bad meal. Raw oysters, Hoochie's Platter for 2 (steam pot), their fried options, ceviche, shrimp cocktail... it's all good!

Mike L.

Yelp
I haven't eaten oysters on the half shell in 4 years....pandemic, then the inflation...so tonight I went to Hoochies and got a dozen. Price was $33. They were pretty oysters and they were presented correctly. However, zero flavor. It's possible they were rinsed after being opened, which washes away all of the brinyness and the oyster flavor itself. Disappointed. The seafood gumbo was good. I recommend training for the young man opening the oysters.

Tiffany W.

Yelp
I ordered this local must-visit for takeout, and thought that it was a solid way to end my day. I haven't eaten out a lot since COVID started (I've mostly been ordering in), but I've had quite a bit of Hoochie's before the pandemic. I'm happy to say that the food tastes just as good at home as it does in the restaurant! Food: I ordered the blackened catfish and the fried shrimp. The catfish was good, but was a little slimy. The fried shrimp were crisp and well battered; I ordered the kid's portion, though, which is why there aren't that many shrimp. Both items came with a generous helping of steak fries and a couple types of sauce. The fries were average -- nothing spectacular and a bit chewy. Takeaways: Hoochie's is a good local spot if you're in need of some seafood. It's one of those dependable places for when you're craving comfort food, although be prepared to drift into a food coma right after!

Devon G.

Yelp
Yum! Amazing gumbo! Flavorful and has a decent amount of seafood in there! Any of their fish specials are excellent. The staff is always kind and the owner check on my family and I multiple times, nice touch. I usually eat here anytime im in Denton and the seafood is so fresh. Also, the name is so cute!

Laura I.

Yelp
Service was great .. food was.. Meh... atmosphere was nice ... went there because we were in the area and I checked in here for Cajun food .. the "hush puppies" were made with cornmeal AND FLOUR.. I have a gluten intolerance... and USUALLY, they aren't made with flour .. so, there's that.. Gumbo.. well... it was supposed to be Seafood Gumbo .. more chicken and sausage than anything.. and it REALLY tasted tomatoey( if that's even a word ).. . Wasn't Good either way...

Patrick D.

Yelp
We have walked passed this place many times and now I regret not having tried it sooner. We ordered 1 and 1/2 boils, oysters, and hush puppies. Everything was great expect the hushpuppies. They were more like a fried square of cornbread than a traditional hush puppy. They weren't bad just not our thing. We will definitely go again.

Richard M.

Yelp
2nd time here and the food is killer! The first time I got the grilled fish which was great but the portions were small for the money but today I got the street tacos. I got 4 of the fish tacos and they were fantastic! Actually 3 would have been enough but I got 4 and I am definitely full. They are not small traditional street size but normal taco size. I know what to order from now on. Pricing was good for this plate. Come at lunch on a weekday and street parking is good to go. Love the laid-back atmosphere!

William G.

Yelp
Good seafood, courteous staff. They do a great job in quickly serving the public. Wanted oysters but they were not in season. I will be back and try something new. Good value

Steven Y.

Yelp
I am instantly a big fan of Hoochies for quality seafood and a relaxing and casual atmosphere. We were close by enjoying some cold brews and searched for a spot to get some dinner. Fortunately, we found that Hoochies had great reviews, and they were not lying. I ordered the shrimp boil which came with a great portion of shrimp, potatoes, and a small piece of corn. When you order you can get it regular or spicy, or of course I got it spicy. The shrimp were excellent and cooked properly. The seasoning on the shrimp added amazing amounts of flavor that penetrated into the meat, not just sitting on the shell The seasoning made my lips burn and were very satisfying on the heat scale. Beware not to rub your eyes, even if you have washed your hands with soap and water for a while after having this dish. I also got some oysters and was please with them. You can get them prepared in multiple different ways, but I love them on the half shell over ice. They were shucked very cleanly and were easy to enjoy with a little of the provided cocktail sauce and horseradish. You can order them individually so you can get exactly what you are wanting. It felt like they normally have multiple species of oysters, but it was Blue Point oysters on our mid-June visit. My family order the shrimp tacos and was very pleased with them. The taco is filled with delicious shrimp with cilantro, avocado, and a delicious sauce. When you get everything into a single bite it is delicious. It was served with Spanish-style rice that was not tomato-based and packed some great flavors. We found that the staff was very friendly and took good care of you, while all the time moving food out to tables. They also had plenty of staff working to make sure that things ran smoothly. There was plenty of seating while we were there and the restaurant was clean.

Jennifer J.

Yelp
Craving oysters and dined at Hoochie's this weekend based off of reviews, wish we wouldn't have. While the food was good taste wise, they should not charge $22.95 for roasted oysters that are all smaller than my thumb nail. Mind you my ring size is a 4.5 so these were extremely tiny oysters! I've actually never been served oysters this small before... and no, it wasn't due to them being roasted. The oyster shells them selves were about the size of a quarter to a half dollar, oysters were all about the size of a dime to a nickel. It came with 7. Their 1/2 a dozen raw were $12.95 so I basically paid $10 dollars for one extra dime-sized oyster, butter, garlic, and parmesan ! Every oyster was that small too! In the picture I cut the sliced bread into 1/4s and the oyster was still smaller than 1/4 of 1 piece of tiny bread. It was a French loaf cut in half and 7 small pieces of halved overly toasted bread. Nothing else came with it so I left about as hungry as when I arrived. My boyfriend's food was good, nothing was great though. Service was just ok. Lots of flies everywhere which is gross. I'll say the tea and citric rice were both good though as a positive note to end on.

Kyle B.

Yelp
Love this place. The food has always been great and the service is friendly and efficient.

Keith In Texas ..

Yelp
This place is awesome! I had the blackened salmon, which was top notch. Couple that with a nice cold beer plus an awesome staff and you get an experience that you will come back to. Please try this place amd see for yourself.

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Great place if you've got the munchies for some high quality fried seafood like Poboys etc. I have not had the oysters or anything like that but they also have non-fried food as well. Service has been great and I like the atmosphere on the square. A little pricier than I was expecting but seafood is expensive.

Kyle E.

Yelp
Great seafood. Staff is friendly. Their new menu items are delicious! Best seafood in Denton

Carla B.

Yelp
I always like to try a different place to dine in Denton. However, this is one place I'll put on my "No" list. Steak fries were mushy and catfish was just so so. More of a college hangout.
