‘Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Restaurants: Where to Find Them - Eater Austin

"Built in the early 1900s, the quaint green-and-white cottage originally stood in Round Rock, where it became an iconic film set for Hooper’s horror classic. ... For dinner, there’s a complementary balance of seafood and steak options; with classics for breakfast; and sandwiches, wraps, and burgers for lunch. ... Several of Grand Central Cafe’s wait staff claim that the house is haunted." - Marisa Mirabal

Google
Not just a place for horror fans. Hooper’s is a huge part of horror movie history, but the food is also great. We were there on a Sunday for brunch and got seated right away. The staff was great, the food was great and old houses are cool anyways, but knowing this was the set of the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre makes it even cooler. They have some restaurant merch and some movie memorabilia. We sat in the ‘chicken room’ as I’d call it from the movie. It’s definitely worth the drive…which is beautiful on its own.

Google
The house from the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre is iconic! The drinks were great, and the history behind this place was just fascinating. The only downside was that we didn't get to eat; the food took over an hour to come out, so we ended up canceling our order. I still enjoyed the pictures and the drinks!

Google
The smash burger and pulled pork sandwich were very flavorful and balanced. Juicy, but didn't soak the bottom buns. The fried mushrooms were crisp on the outside and tender (but not watery) on the inside. Stopped in after the eclipse and was impressed that they were running everything super efficiently to keep food coming out quickly - great experience!

Google
I'm celebrating my bday here! And the experience is so good! Great food, good prices and friendly staff! I recommend the chicken fried steak and the Brisket tacos! The chainsaw margarita was delicious!! BTW. I came cause of the movie and will comeback for the food!

Google
My experience was surreal. I managed to come here a couple of days before the eclipse back in April. The food was good and the atmosphere was great. Great customer service. Would love to visit again. I highly recommend it if you love food and a piece of cinematic history.

Google
This house is the movie house from the 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Honestly, such a beautiful house. Next to this restaurant is a Hotel and Coffee shop as well. Anyway, the food? So so so good. The fried mushrooms with their ranch is absolutely delicious, mouth watering deliciousness. The Brisket Hash on the breakfast menu was delightful. Their breakfast menu looks so good too, I'd love to try all of it. The Chicken Slaughter Sandwhich is a chicken salad sandwhich. We loved it so much. We are pretty picky about chicken salad, and this one is one of the best we've had! The outdoor area is beautiful and peaceful, such a nice setting. The inside seems cozy. They also have a full bar inside which is nice.

Modern Revolution

Google
Second time to this location. And it keeps getting better. Nothing against the old establishment. I lived them too! But today we finally got to eat at the restaurant. And needless to say everything was aces. And being a true TTCM fan it’s like eating at a museum. They should turn this joint into a landmark ASAP. This house is more famous than the local Te as history landmarks you can find every other mile. After our drinks we shared a couple of appetizers and a monster sandwich called the big bird. The. We left with new swag from Hooper’s

Google
This place was so cool! We went just for the house, me being a horror movie fan, and we're so impressed by the food and service. Excellent menu and cocktails. I recommend trying the Massacre Martini!

Yelp
Everything is always wonderful when I go. Amanda is the best bartender! We love coming while she is working.

Yelp
Best southern food that we have had for a while! Fast service and large portions. Tasty fried mushrooms! Clean sit down with a bar and super friendly where we ordered food then explored the house for pictures with leatherface! Lots of parking and good cell service! Worth the drive from ATX area with good roads.

Yelp
Absolutely not!!!! This place is absolutely discusting!!! My chicken fried steak wasn't cooked the cheesecake had mold on it and my bar drink was so watered down by the time I got it..... Our server seamed like she was on drugs and it felt like we were waiting forever for our stuff

Yelp
GREAT FOOD. GREAT SERVICE. If you find yourself in Kingsland, this is a must-stop place for brunch. My friends and I were seated very quickly as walk-ins. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, Brisket Hash, Steak and Eggs, and Pancakes with Strawberries. I must say, the chicken fried steak here might just be the best I've ever had. It was super thick and seasoned well. The brisket hash was super filling and had so much brisket and potatoes! The steak was cooked perfectly, and the pancakes came with fresh strawberries. They quite literally do not skimp out on the serving size here. You will leave with a full stomach and leftovers. The service was just as stellar as the food. We came here simply because I'm a big movie buff and wanted to check out the house that was in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but boy was I delighted by the food and service.

Yelp
Hooper's is located on King Ct off RM 1431 in Kingsland, which took me a little over an hour's drive from Austin. After watching the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie and playing the TCM game, this was a place we definitely wanted to check out in person. Although the location of the building has been moved from the filming location, the building is still the same. They've done a great job cleaning up the place after the Sawyers left! There's four main indoor eating areas with one being the bar area as well as an outdoor patio area. The bar and host counter are the only areas that have movie memorabilia, with the bar having the most items. Hooper's has a pretty good menu selection with breakfast, lunch, and dinner items as well as alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and the food is really good! The entire staff was very friendly and patient while we looked around to take it all in. Although it's about an hour drive from Austin, it's definitely worth the trip for the memorabilia and food! Soo glad we made a trip to Hooper's to see the TCM house.

Yelp
Beautiful exterior and landscaping! Such a lovely place and experience. Well worth a day road trip! Fun menu with a good variety! My eggs were great, they have honey for the tea, and the husband had lots of jokes about the meat being locally sourced! (Movie reference!) Great service, good people, good food, fun decor!
google avatar

Yelp
So Hooper's is inside a house that was used to film the Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is pretty cool. If you go upstairs there's a little setup, that's kind of fun, and there's some memorabilia on the walls in the bar area. For the restaurant itself, we had a reservation and were a tad late but it was no issue as our table was still there for us. Yay! I was seated right away and the server came and took our order with no delay. She was very attentive and I appreciate her positive attitude. The food was really good. I loved the hamburger and the fries were fresh and not overly salted, a plus in my book. The blueberry cheesecake was really good too! Not too sweet. I had no issues with requesting a bun-less burger either. Parking was the only issue as the area also features a hotel and a train depot. I'd come back.

Yelp
A must stop when you're in Kingsland or driving through on your way to marble falls. We went early on a Friday and there was no wait at all the property is absolutely beautiful and it's a great area to take a stroll after you e had a delicious breakfast or lunch at hoppers. The atmosphere was nice and pleasant and the Cesar salad I had was super fresh with some amazing shrimp topped on it!

Yelp
Good food, great service, cool movie experience. I arrived at 8:15 a.m. on a Sunday hoping to beat the crowds and there was already a large church group there, which made for a noisy dining experience (plus the gross medical talk by a doctor in the group didn't help). I wish I would've asked to move to the bar since it's on the opposite side of the building and was empty. Anyway, seeing the staircase from the movie was awesome. There are a few surprises at the top of the stairs, so definitely go up there. And check out the bar for some memorabilia. I enjoyed my TCSM road trip and Hooper's was a great way to kick it off. And for die-hard fans, they are hosting an event in October for the movie's 50th anniversary, so watch their socials for that.

Yelp
Service was great! My avocado toast Benedict came out delicious. It my husband's steak was a bit over cooked. He asked for medium.

Yelp
Service was great and the food was delicious! Highly recommend the artichoke dip as a starter. The cowboy cookies & ice cream was so good (forgot to take a photo)! The chicken slaughter sandwich and chainsaw margarita were perfect for lunch!

Yelp
Fantastic place to grab a bite when you're enjoying the Lake LBJ area. I'll start with the food - the hubs had chicken fried steak with mash potatoes and Texas toast. Taste was OUTSTANDING, as was the portion size. Fortunately he let me take plenty of bites. I had the spicy tuna bowl. A much lighter option that was equally as good. We really liked the menu's variety And now onto the service - also really good and super friendly staff. We went on a night where the restaurant was closely early for a holiday party, and they didn't rush us at all. Instead, they made us feel right at home. The only negative is the restaurant doesn't stay open late n general - but that's not atypical for the area. Absolutely add it to your list of places to try if you're in the Kingsland area.

Kristie M.

Yelp
Ever since the steak house moved in next door they own too I think I've ordered steak and eggs for breakfast and never been disappointed yet. Service is best on weekday mornings when the hotel isn't as busy. All the wait staff make me feel like our family is welcome and missed.
google avatar

Yelp
The old Texas Chain Saw House and named after legendary director of said movie Tobe Hooper. That alone turned me off the steak side of the menu, which was a good thing because they had run out just before we got there. Apps were on point, the cfs was a decent entrant to Texas cfs offerings, the bar next door with portraits of Leatherface meets every definition of a "good bar". It's a firm "Not Bad At All" in my book.

Yelp
Hoopers is a local bar but they do not have specials for the locals. Food not great and it's really expensive there for what you get. Drinks are so over priced. I'm not a fan of this place and that sucks cause I live in MF. Would recommend to doing 1 night for the locals and do drink specials and it will be much better.

Yelp
Traveled to Kingsland Tx. about 2 months ago to see the house that Chainsaw Massacre the movie was filmed at. As you may know it is a restaurant nothing fancy but has delicious food and a great bar area. Service was right on with no problems except I ate too much. So if you are traveling around the area and looking for a place to eat Hoopers is th place.
google avatar

Yelp
excellent burgers in old-fashioned cafe. service could not have been better. Fries - perfect. can not wait to get back.
google avatar

Jinx L.

Yelp
No wait when we got there! Allie was our server she was outstanding!! She came right over offered suggestions on cocktail selections and appetizers. Food was good a bit over done but still delicious. Allie also suggested trying the steakhouse nextdoor that apparently just opened. We plan to go there before we leave town! Wish there was more memorabilia in the restaurant other than the chicken pictures on the wall and the mask over the counter wouldve never known chainsaw massacre was filmed here...
google avatar

Ted L.

Yelp
Horrible hamburger. Probably one of the worst. Maybe a quarter pounder on a stale brioche bun. My wife could not eat the Huevos Rancheros.

Elaine S.

Yelp
Hoopers is great - they've had their share of ups and downs with new owners/management but seem to be running smoothly now. Food is awesome. The shrimp tacos and loaded fries are to die for! Amanda the bartender is straight awesome. Great spot with lots of history.
google avatar

Aileen C.

Yelp
Chain saw massacre was filmed here!!! Beautiful house and grounds. Lots of pictures of the film inside Now about the food: we went for breakfast at noon and it was an Amazing breakfast!!!! The spicy omelette was indeed spicy. The blueberry muffins were fabulous!! Everyone enjoyed a late brunch! The staff were super nice and the food came quickly and hot! I highly recommend it for the food and the scenery of being 'on set'

Yelp
Excellent restaurant in Kingsland. Friendly folks and good selection of food. I enjoy eating here when I go to Kingsland.

Yelp
Major upgrade at Hoopers! New owners have improved the food. Tacos are great! But the best news They have Annie as a bartender!
google avatar

Dominik M.

Yelp
The food was fantastic! I ate the steak and eggs but it was so good I forgot to take a picture ‍... We had a large party, but they accommodated us quickly and the service was some of the best we've ever had. They were so kind and friendly! The mimosa was a must on this fine morning. I would definitely go again! No one was murdered in the house today so that's always a win. If your in the area definitely give it a try. It was a great experience in this famous house?
google avatar

Yelp
We're new to town and like sitting at the bar to eat and drink and meet people. Rustic, but charming. The bar tenders were engaging and friendly. They knew the menu and we each had a burger fries and beer. Nothing went wrong with any if it. Will 100% go back and continue to explore the menu and cocktails.

Yelp
Renovations are finally done. This place looks amazing the food is better than ever!! Kingsland vibe is alive!

Yelp
My wife and I were hoping to eat a New Year's Eve dinner at the new Junction Prime steakhouse, but it was closed. Hooper's was open next door, so we went there instead. We've eaten breakfast at Hooper's before, which was always delicious. It was a very busy evening, but we were able to sit at the bar. Still hungry for a steak, we both ordered the ribeye, which was incredibly delicious! Cooked perfectly, served with lightly sautéed zucchini, the meal was outstanding! It's a fun, relaxing dining atmosphere. We'll definitely be back the next time we're in the Kingsland area.

Yelp
My family and I took a trip to Hooper's yesterday morning, about an hour and a half drive for us, & it was well worth it! Our food was served quickly and so delicious - my personal favorite was the chicken fried steak my husband ordered. YUM! All of the staff was kind and attentive. The house was beautifully restored - it was great to be in such a cool space (the original filming set of the 1974 film Texas Chainsaw Massacre) while also just being able to enjoy a nice meal. The subtle nods to the movie are fantastic but even if you aren't a horror fan, this is definitely something you can enjoy! Wonderful & delicious. I highly recommend! I attached a brief video I made from my visit - I hope it makes you want to go & try for yourself!

Yelp
Had chicken fried steak - potatoes great as was gravy ( appetizers was also very good queso) the disaster was the chicken fried steak. I don't know what the breading was but it was about a quarter to a half inch thick and terrible.
google avatar

Beverly B.

Yelp
So we went there for brunch and i ordered the brisket hash. There was very little meat and the meat that was there was burnt. The total disappointment was they could only serve me one mimosa because at 10:30 they ran out of champagne at 10:30 for brunch. . The service was very slow, however they were very nice.
google avatar

Suzanne R.

Yelp
Food was phenomenal. setting was adorable. Service was just fine: the servers were super sweet, but had to be reminded about several drink orders (all food orders were correct). Highly recommend anything with biscuits and gravy. The hash was delicious but maybe a tad greasy. The Avocado Toast Benedict was tasty (but you better like arugula). We went in the springtime and there were so many bluebonnets around to add to the ambiance.

Yelp
This place is coming back around after changing up the format a bit. Food is good and service was speedy. One of our fav brunch spots in the hill country.

Yelp
I have a lake house in Kingsland and was very excited to see this restaurant and overall property be remodeled and re-envisioned by new owners. In fact we have met the new owner several times and he is an incredibly nice and service oriented guy and that is why this pains me to write this review. The work that was done on the victorian home and the addition of Junction Prime steakhouse was nicely done but the food at Hoopers needs more work. We have been to the restaurant once for breakfast and gave it another try for dinner. At breakfast I had a benedict dish. The very definition of benedict is that it is served with hollandaise sauce. When it arrived I jokingly said that the hollindaise sauce was accidentally left off and the server said that they don't serve it with the sauce and you have to pay extra. I agreed to the extra $2 charge and they brought me a full cereal bowl worth of it. I promise you it would have been more cost effective to just drizzle a bit on top because having made it before, that bowl probably cost at least $5 worth of butter and eggs. The service was good though as was the atmosphere on the front porch on a nice day. Next we tried dinner. We walk in and stand at the hostess stand for at least 5 minutes with several people walking by and ignoring us until finally we went to the bar area to ask and they said only the pub area was open. They did seat us quickly and the service through the meal was good. The food though was subpar. The carnitas sandwich became an unfortunate sloppy joe that was so sweet it was barely edible. The carnitas needed to shine, not the sauce. It makes you wonder if there was something up with the meat. The shrimp on the tacos tasted strongly of soap. Three people tried them and all agreed. The Ceaser salad could have come out of a bag at HEB, and the burger was described as McDonalds quality The only meal of six that was good were the chicken tenders and that was all eaten because everyone was hungry after disappointing meals. I say all of this not to rail and complain, but to give room for improvement. They did ask a number of times if everything was okay but I did not want to make a scene in the small atmosphere. I have no doubt they would have tried to make it right but there wasn't really too much that could be done and I wasn't going to be one of those people trying to get a free meal. You guys have put so much work and effort in this property. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter how good the surroundings look if the food is not good. Please use higher quality ingredients and hire a true chef that carefully creates the menu instead of a cook. I do not write reviews often but don't want to loose a restaurant in this small town and have faith this can be turned around.
google avatar

Wade G.

Yelp
Super pretentious!! Trying to be like austin and killing the small town lake charm. Prices are too high for the poor quality of food. And the fact that they want to "attract better clientele to kingsland" fells like they think they are better than the locals. Won't be back, will not recommend, will beg folks to not come here!

Melissa F.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this place including the vibe, the food and service. There were some unavailable items but you expect that in a scratch restaurant. We had fish and chips, the bird sandwich, Mac and cheese, chicken fingers, and hummus. Can't wait to go back to try the queso, burger and fried mushrooms. Lots of food for the money and our server was lovely.
google avatar

Jenn E.

Yelp
Average food that is overpriced, slow service. We did think it had a nice atmosphere. Wish it was a better choice in town.
google avatar

Gary R.

Yelp
Ordered a sweet potato hash which is supposed to have sweet potatoes, poached egg, arugula, toasted pumpkin seeds, feta, English muffin, etc. Waited thirty minutes for our order. Got a bowl of cut sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. No poached egg or arugula or pumpkin seeds or muffin or feta. I asked where's the rest of the ingredients and the server just walked away and brought me a fried egg to put in the bowl. Oh, it was cold which you wouldn't think would be the case after waiting thirty minutes. Think I'll come back on six months and see if things have improved.
google avatar

RJ J.

Yelp
Fun place, good food, great area. Super clean, friendly bartenders, all in all a great time.

Yelp
Great place to have breakfast in Kingsland! Laid back atmosphere. Looks like they are transforming this place!
google avatar

Mark T.

Yelp
This establishment changed hands, and while service is still excellent the food has gone completely downhill and the new owners don't give two 's what you or anyone else thinks. The lake region has a small year round community and by alienating that group I don't think the addition of a steakhouse, is going to be successful. I won't be back, but who cares? New ownership certainly doesn't. My best wishes to the staff, but if I were one of you, I'd start looking for a new employer before you're out of a job.

Zachary G.

Yelp
This establishment has exceeded our expectations immensely. The brunch rivals any brunch you could get in Austin, for a fraction of the price. Walking across the street for a coffee after ordering our food was delightful! The wait was quick for a Sunday morning brunch, and our server was fantastic. The building has a ton of natural light and they're digging a huge garden out front. Instant classic!

Daniel P.

Yelp
We had a great lunch and our server Tory/Cory was super polite and helpful. Everyone was super kind and despite them being super busy our food was timely and delicious. Definitely recommend
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
Had dinner in the bar tonight. My husband had the rib eye and I had shrimp and grits. They were both excellent. Bar staff was very friendly and everyone was enjoying visiting with each other.

Yelp
Good food nut very pricey. Ordered two breakfast tacos and two cokes and it was $26.

Yelp
Excellent grub with amazing service by really friendly folks! The vibe is incredible in this historic house. The food and drinks are worthy of frequency.

Yelp
Was really hyped to try their brunch menu. Came in around 1245 pm on a weekday, not very crowded. First, approaching the restaurant, we were stopped by a woman who was sent by a man in the landscaping crew(?) to inform us we needed to park in their new parking lot. We were legally parked on a public street, so I ignored them. Came in, seated right away, ordered 2 waters and 1 coffee, was served promptly, made our orders (benedict and an omelet) and were then ignored for 20 minutes. I finally got up and chased the waitress/hostess/busser/ landscape assistant down to ask for a coffee refill. (Spoiler, it was the last one I got, and we were never offered water refills!) Another 15 minutes pass, and I flagged her down to ask about the food, she said "should be out in a minute". 10 more minutes, she comes over laughing that "the printer broke, so the kitchen never got your order". Wasn't that funny to us. Another 15 minutes pass, and the food comes out. She delivers it without asking about drink refills. We ate our "okay" food, then after another 15 minutes passed of just sitting and waiting, I got up and found her to ask for a to-go box. I should've known that wouldn't clue her in that we wanted to leave, but alas, I was forced to go find her again to ask to pay our bill so we could escape. Despite sitting there over an hour and a half, and never having refilled our drinks (without us having to hunt her down for the 1 coffee refill I got!) there was no apology given for the wait, nor any compensation offered, other than "I didn't charge you for the coffee". So disappointing. The server was very nice, but the system is obviously a failure. (I still tipped her 20%). Probably won't be back. What a shame.

Jennifer K.

Yelp
We loved everything about this place! The house is a 1909 Sears catalog house, ordered online and eventually used in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie. Renee, our very friendly waitress let us take a peek around at all the old, original woodwork and floor plan. The food was outstanding. We had shrimp and grits and tacos for dinner, then went back for breakfast the next morning to enjoy a Cowboy Breakfast and the Sweet Potato Hash Benedict. Everything was beyond our expectations.

Sara L.

Yelp
Hooper's is a restaurant in a beautiful old farmhouse where "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" was filmed. It has a great bar and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The weekend brunch was amazing. Fortunately, we got there early because we didn't have reservations and it gets very busy. It is very popular with the locals and tourists.

K-Lynn R.

Yelp
Need to add a potato vodka at the bar for those of us who are asthmatic or gluten free. Things are getting better - keep working on it.

S B.

Yelp
The old train station has new owners. The building has been improved but I think they can't decide if they are farm to table or part Mexican. The staff is nice but the food is inconsistent. I have tried them several times and the food is hit or miss. Dont take large parties because they can't bring the food out well and hot too large groups. The owners need to have more presence
