15 Classic Chinese Restaurants In LA's Chinatown - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"When Hop Woo opened back in 1993, there were only eight tables in the entire restaurant. Since then, the Cantonese and Sichuan restaurant has obviously expanded, first into a larger space in the building, then to its current location across the street. Run by husband-and-wife duo, Lupe and Judy Liang, Hop Woo has cemented itself as a neighborhood fixture, a place where the menu is translated into Chinese, English, and Spanish. Focus on the egg foo young with thick mushroom gravy, combination wonton soup, or the spicy cold chicken in chili oil." - kat hong

In Los Angeles' Chinatown, a Blend of Old-World Eats and Indie Fashion | Condé Nast Traveler

"For a taste of classic Cantonese American food, grab a booth at Hop Woo. The family owned institution specializes in barbecued meats and lobster. Order the chicken egg foo young, an omelet that comes with bean sprouts and is smothered in a thick mushroom gravy, alongside wonton soup with extra noodles."

Google
Hop Woo, your Chinese Food Destination on the West Side💣 🥘 if you’re looking for delicious and authentic Chinese food on the west side, Hop Woo is your Go-to spot. From Szechuan to Cantonese Cuisine, Hop Woo understands the assignment. 👍🏽 I ordered both spicy and Cantonese dishes here and all of them were very tasty. The fried chicken was absolutely 🔥, great texture, great cut, great flavor great everything. Ong Choi amazed me and it showed the how they managed to present a Cantonese menu. The crispy skin of Roasted Duck surprised me yet with great joy. Fish fillet in pickled soup stole my heart, sour, spicy, sweet, well-balanced! 👨 The team there are very helpful and quick. They spoke multiple languages which was cool! 📝 if I could make a wish, that would be I hope one day I could enjoy a wider dim sum menu at Hop Woo!!

Google
I ordered kung pao chicken that comes in a pretty small case for 20$ without rice. While the food was pretty good, the dish consisted of mostly onions on the bottom and throughout. I personally don't feel this place is worth the money.

We’ve ordered takeout from this restaurant numerous times, but this was our first visit in person. The atmosphere and service are fairly standard — though we did notice a few flies occasionally flying around the dining area (not in the food, to be clear) — but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. When it comes to Sichuan cuisine in the West LA area, this place is truly top-tier. We ordered the Griddle Cooked Cauliflower and the Green Peppercorn Fish, both of which were exceptional. The cauliflower was deeply flavorful, seasoned with rich aromatics and enhanced by the savory intensity of pork belly. The fish fillets were fresh, thinly sliced, and perfectly tender. What really stood out was the use of three different types of peppercorns, which created a layered, complex interplay of heat and numbing spice. Portions were generous — easily enough to serve three people. In addition to their authentic Sichuan offerings, the restaurant also excels at Cantonese dishes, making it a rare and irreplaceable gem in West LA’s Chinese food scene.

Google
Hop Woo Restaurant is a fantastic spot for authentic Sichuan-style spice lovers! 🔥🌶️ Their spicy chicken is bold and flavorful, the lamb chops are perfectly seasoned and tender, and the fish soup is rich and satisfying. 🐔🥩🐟 Every dish delivers that signature numbing heat and deep, authentic taste. A must-visit for anyone craving delicious, fiery Sichuan cuisine! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Affordable price compared to similar restaurants. Small free parking lot in front.

I don't know why they ignore me with my order for 15 minutes. Although I came up to them and said that my order is ready. In the end I waited 30 minutes. I see the package is ready, but the employees of this restaurant ignored me and said simply not yet, not yet. Advice to the owner to change his employees who work at the cash register, simply disgusting service!

Google
The food is good, they have a large menu. The service and the entire eating experience is atrocious. It is hard to even find a wait staff to take our order, we had to go find our own water! The food arrives randomly and they are annoyed that we wanted the ma po tofu without meat. Our sense is they have tons of to go orders, and were more interested in them. If you want to eat here, maybe order to go.

Victoria

Google
The duck and claypot fish were delicious. The chicken fried rice was good but barely had any slices of chicken, if any. The salt and pepper pork chops and squid are good Peking duck is good. The pan fried noodles are too wet without any flavor. Shumai is not fresh. It’s from frozen. Portions have shrunk over the years. Not consistent flavor either.

Google
Very good standard Hong Kong style lunch. Tea is just from a tea bag but food is fresh and flavorful. We had the lunch combo which makes it very affordable. 3 combos for $45

Yelp
This place was good! Traditional style Chinese food. In a small parking lot but it's very clean and a nice vibe. Great option for the west side. Sizzling rice soup and dry style beef chow fun were delicious. Service is quick and polite. They have lunch specials 11am-3pm every day, even the weekend!!

Yelp
I ordered through Uber Eats. I got the Salt and Pepper Pork chops, Hong Kong pan-fried noodles, and roasted duck on a rice plate. All items had no flavor at all. The salt and pepper pork chops came soggy as assumed as I got delivery. I warmed it up in the air fryer to bring it back to life. They looked good and I was excited to eat only to eat overly battered and mushy meat. The meat may have been fake. It was such an odd taste I couldn't finish. I moved on to the roasted duck plate. It was number one on their recommendations on Yelp so I hoped for the best. Again lacked flavor, at least the meat tasted like meat, but disappointed. Hong Kong pan-fried noodles. I always order this if I see it on a menu. I wish I hadn't this time. The noodles weren't fully fried and the taste was stale. The brown sauce lacked any flavor at all and the the protein as well. At this point I threw in some salt and MSG to save the meal, but even that didn't do much. $47 dollars down the drain. Go spend more at Moon house at least they have flavor.

Yelp
After a long day of watching the Chinese new year parade, Cassie F. and were starving so we hippity hoppity hopped to Hop Woo. A stampede of parade goers came in shortly after we put our name on the list. While we were waiting, a pair of Chinese dragons came and do their little dance and eating the lettuce which was super entertaining! We were lucky to catch it before our lunch. The wait was about 30 mins which was fair considering it being extremely busy. It was a little hard to place our order since they were very short staffed. We ended up ordering the chicken chow mien (w/Shanghai noodles) and chicken with mushroom with rice. The chicken chow mien was the one of the best noodles I had in my life! The chicken with mushroom with rice on the other hand came out as shrimp with mushroom with rice. They got my order wrong. I didn't want to wait another 30 minutes just to get my dish so I settled for the shrimp and mushroom which exceeded my expectations! This place is considered authentic for Chinese food. A solid choice if you are ever in Chinatown!

Yelp
First and LAST time coming here!! The cooks are super slow AF and the rude lady who rang me up couldn't care less about the customer. Came for take out right as they opened as I know parking in this tiny strip mall is challenging. As the first customer I was told two dishes made to order will take 20 minutes. After 27 minutes I inquire about my order. The rude lady says 15 minutes, no apology for the extra time it'll take. When I asked when will it actually be ready, she yelled that she told the cooks to finish and there's nothing she can do about it. Actually there is. You can apologize as a professional courtesy for me having to wait much longer and show you care about the customers' perspective. Plus at this point my order should have been ready after 5 more minutes max. I finally got my order after 36 minutes, not 20. She just silently put my food down in front of me. I didn't bother remarking how long it took because I was done being frustrated. By then a guy who came for his order was told to wait and another man was still waiting to give his order. I knew service would be curt before I stepped in. As I walked to the entrance to double check opening time the same woman came out and said bluntly "We're not open" and I responded politely. I know this curtness is typical of some Chinese restaurants whose food makes the unpleasantness worthwhile. Not Hop Woo. My Dry Beef Chow Fun was ok. Beef underseasoned, noodles barely had enough flavor. The Singapore Curry Noodles are good though skimpy on the pork slices and shrimp. The small dining area needs a new coat of paint. I would also take down the tacky dish posters and prices held up by just as tacky tape. Here's an aesthetic tip: There's something called painter's tape. You need to also replace the broken chairs in the thrift store vibe take out waiting area. Parking consists of about 10 small compact parking spaces or street parking. Next time I'll take my business to the Hop Woo on Pico. Heck, I'd rather get Panda Express than have another horrible, dismissive experience here.

Yelp
Great food! Especially the whole crab-which was garlicky and flavorful. Their chow fun beef noodles and their crispy shrimp were delicious--and stayed that way even with delivery.

Madisen G.

Yelp
The workers are racist and never getting another dime out of me. Refused to even acknowledge my presence as I stood there for 5 minutes without anyone helping me. All I wanted was to pick up my food and they would look at me and walk away and ignore me every time I said hello. Fuck this place.

Yelp
I had the War wonton soup and 1/4 duck. . . DELICIOUS!!!! The flavor was great, service was fast and the staff was very attentive. I will definitely come back!

Yelp
It's been a while since I last ate here and it seems to have changed from Cantonese food to Szechwan. I ordered Rock Cod with Black Bean Sauce lunch special and Chicken Chow Mein Hong Kong style. Fermented black beans give dishes a salty punch so when the fish was brought out the wait staff didn't think to bring steamed rice with it until I asked for it and even then the employee seemed surprised by the request. The taste was good but when I spooned what I thought was sauce onto the rice I saw that it wasn't sauce but a pool of oil that the fish lay in. When ordering chow mein Hong Kong style the noodles are supposed to be deep fried to provide a crisp and crunchy texture but the noodles weren't fried long enough so it got mushy quickly, so it is less than it could be, again tasting okay but falling short of the same dish made here the last time I ate here. I could eat here if I had to, but food was just okay, service subpar, and getting in and out of the small lot with illegally parked cars clogging up access it's not good enough to encourage me to come here regularly.

Yelp
I was a little surprised when my dad said to have lunch at Hop Woo in the west side when we could easily meet in SGV somewhere. But I should never doubt my dad's taste for Chinese food. The food was delish and the portion sizes did not disappoint. Be patient with service because the restaurant is definitely understaffed. I liked Hop Woo because there are so many options. You can choose from Chinese seafood (like lobster with long life noodles), Szechuan spicy food with numbing sensations, or Panda Express Chinese food. Since my dad is a regular he knew exactly what to get (non-Panda type foods). My favorite dish was something that I had never had--Szechuan baby cauliflower stir fried with pork--mostly because I have never had baby cauliflower in any Chinese dish. The other Szechuan dish we had was a braised fish which is normally drenched in red soup but this one was in clear broth, so just numbing without the spice. My little one ate everything we served her that wasn't spicy, and enjoyed that there was a tank with fresh seafood. I would definitely return and it does get busy. Most people appeared to be regulars like my dad, all coming in for exactly what they wanted.

Yelp
Delicious and reliable. I love the drooling chicken / chicken in chili oil and the soup with fish and rattan numbing pepper.

Yelp
As a native Chinese, I would say this is one of the best spots in West LA for legit Chinese food with reasonable prices and good services. You know it's legit when Yelp review is at 3.5 lol. Now I'm hesitate to bring the average up by giving a 4 star! We ordered orange chicken, fried tofu, Yangzhou fried rice, walnut shrimp and green beans, and orders hot and sour soup. The soup is a bit spicy to my taste, but everything else was great and delicious!
google avatar

Judy S.

Yelp
Best place in West LA for Chinese food. Our favorites are their green veggies (ong choy, garlic snow pea leaves), salted fish fried rice, porridge (w/ you tiao - which they call chinese donut?). Their szechuan food is also pretty good but Sichuan Impression is better (but also more expensive). Skip the shu mai and jelly fish appetizers - taste like the frozen aisle in 99 Ranch. Also the peking duck is actually roast duck, so temper your expectations.
google avatar

Daph H.

Yelp
Hop Woo is a total hole-in-the-wall, but it's one of my go-to Chinese restaurants in West LA. If it was in the SGV, I'd probably give it three stars, but we don't have too many choices over here. They have lunch specials that come with rice. Rock cod with black bean sauce is a fave in my house, as is the hot and sour soup. Roast duck noodle soup is decent, though some of the pieces were pretty bony. Their small parking lot is a complete pain. Stopped dining in over a decade ago because the lot was such a nightmare for parking.
google avatar

Julie F.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here and the food is pretty comparable to Hop Li and Fortune House. The house special pan fried noodles and hot and sour soup were good, standard versions. The sweet and sour fish filet had a mild flavor and they could've given more sauce. Overall, this place is worth ordering from.

Yelp
The worst one I ever eat in LA. I have never seen such Scrambled Egg with Shrimp in other restaurants. The boba tea is too sweet
google avatar

Larry B.

Yelp
Disgusting food. The duck was rotten. Smelled like death. I smelled the rice before eating, and it was gross..
google avatar

Peter B.

Yelp
If you live on the Westside and you want authentic and yummy old school, basic Cantonese food for dinner and you don't want to drive to SGV, this is your place. Crunchy gai lan, yummy pea shoots, good seafood, pork and meatless options. Nothing NOT to recommend. And love their creative take-out containers that separate noodles etc from soup so that they don't turn to mush. It's popular , parking can be a challeneand the kitchen is cramped and busy so be patient and respectful. Your stomach will thank you.
google avatar

Raheleh M.

Yelp
Amazing food and great taste. Loved it would recommend to anyone that has good taste buds for flavored food.

Yelp
I really like this place! I've eaten here once or twice decades ago. Then I've also gotten delivery. I found this place because my old boss rec'd it and also Hop Li. She was Chinese American. I've tried their veggie, noodle, and meat dishes and all are very good. My fave is their singapore noodles! A traditional Chinese place not too fancy not Panda Express. Solid.

Yelp
Ordered take out: Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken and Szezhuan Egg Plant. The Egg Plant was the best of the three, fresh and well seasoned. But the Mongolian Beef had seen better days. By the time it got to my plate, the beef was hard, stringy, overcooked and, strangely, seasoned with an unappetizing blend of fish sauce, soy and vinegar. NOT like any Mongolian Beef I had ever seen before. So bad, I had to throw it out. The Orange chicken was prepared with a thick panko coat and swimming in a congealing honey sauce. No orange rind to be seen. The chicken underneath was uneven, mostly overcooked and stringy. There was quick turnover at this basically take-out joint (with some diner-like eat-in tables), but the food was unexpectedly stale, bad and hard to eat. Would not go back. Still looking for a good Chinese restaurant in post-pandemic LA.

Sam S.

Yelp
We were recommended this place by a Chinese couple who we met in a line at a taco truck a few weeks ago (what an LA experience), and they claimed that this was the best Chinese food in west LA, so we had some high expectations going in. Sadly I didn't get a picture of all the food, but will still comment on it. The duck noodle soup was not very good, the noodles were good and soup was ok, but the duck was bland and cooked poorly and with little seasoning. The xiao long bao was pre bought and heated in a tin cup... how insulting. In my opinion if you can't even make it steamed in a proper container and just steam it in a tin container, don't serve it at all. The chow fun, was amazing though, and some of the best I've eaten. I guess here you really just need to know what to order otherwise you might get something you don't really like. I would stick to basic things but I won't be eating here again.
google avatar

Dena G.

Yelp
All I can say is: YUM. I don't get to this part of town often, but I was in the neighborhood. Worthwhile! Low key atmosphere, good food, fair prices. Great stop-by place for lunch!
google avatar

Maylee W.

Yelp
Located in a strip mall on the corner of Olympic and Sawtelle.. Plenty of parking depending on the time of day. There are 2 different menus - Szechwan and Cantonese. We were adventurous and ordered Szechwan - bring on the spice! The cold spicy Chicken dish was delicious! We picked out a live lobster and he was transformed into a spicy lobster dish ( I usually never like to see the poor crustacean before he turns into a delicious meal but my guests wanted to see him)....pork belly with leeks - good. Food - 4 stars Benefit - you can bring your own wine and they don't charge a corkage fee..next time I'll bring my wine glasses. And I'll try the Cantonese food too!
google avatar

Chrystine H.

Yelp
I've been ordering takeout and delivery for a decade and have recently started coming for the DINE IN only $15.99/lb lobster... great meal to split with friends for reasonable prices. Ambiance meh but great food.

Yuxi Y.

Yelp
Me and my friends came for lunch. We think chicken and beef are very good. We chose spicy, which has a taste similar to China, but there are some flavors that are average. The restaurant environment is very quiet, and the service attitude is also very good.

Kyle X.

Yelp
Fifth time being here, and one thing we always ordered was the roasted duck (quarter). Today at least 80% of the duck we got are bones, potentially from the neck or somewhere near the butt. We called a waiter and asked him why we got merely no meat this time yet we are paying the same price for the duck. He went to his boss then came back and told us for this quarter roast duck we could've gotten the upper half, which is bone heavy, or the lower half, which is meat heavy. He literally said that we are just "not lucky" this time, and told us we can tell the waiter that we would like the thigh part next time. Well I guess there is not next time because we don't want to count on our luck for the food we will get.

Art D.

Yelp
This is the only Chinese restaurant I found that actually has more than 3 standard sauces with 3 shades of brown! The place is small, clean and quick to bring the grub! Very large selection, exceptional duck!! I live in Ventura county and anytime we're near we call ahead & pickup! Enjoy the flavor & the food!

Jon T.

Yelp
I'm Chinese American and I think most Chinese food is terrible. This place is OUTSTANDING. I've not had this level of cooking outside of San Gabriel and maybe a couple spots in the South Bay and Chinatown that are at this level. It's tiny. The service is barely above rude. But holy moly the food is always perfect. Try the double pan fried noodles. And the gai lan with oyster sauce and you'll see immediately that it's something special

Sasha B.

Yelp
招牌酸菜鱼很腥,而且味道过淡,用的是淡水鱼不是海鱼。剩下的菜都太咸了,非常齁.........不知道为什么网上这么多好评,就很一般的一家店。 Cabbage fish tastes too fishy and lacks the sour and spicy flavor. The rest of the dishes are way too salty. The quality of this restaurant doesn't match its popularity online.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
An average Chinese joint. Not bad but not that great. Just okay. I ordered delivery with my friends it was only $3! Which wasn't bad of a price and the delivery went smoothly (came early too!) As for our food- everything was packaged neatly but the food was just okay. Sautéed ong choi on more of the oily side. Fried rice and lo mein were a bit bland but still fine. Duck was average but was the best thing I ordered. Nothing striking but nothing done bad.
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Have driven by Hop Woo for 15 years at least and finally ordered thru Grubhub for delivery. Amazing, fresh, plentiful and tasty! House special lo mein Chicken with cashews Potstickers. All terrific!
google avatar

Angel M.

Yelp
Their green beans are as delicious as they are oily. So, very much on both fronts. But yes, the green beans are amazing and you should order them. And surprising, their rice is steamed very well! All the grains were fluffy and distinct.

Cary G.

Yelp
The best Szechuan on the west side! Be sure to ask for the special menu, which offers all of the real Szechuan specialties. My favorite is the shredded pork, but sometimes it needs a little extra vinegar. The best thing there is the lobster, which is also a bargain. I prefer it with the ginger scallion sauce, but they will make it any way you like. The servers are nice, but always super busy, so be prepared to wait. It's worth it! The parking lot is tiny and busy, but after 6 and on Sunday, you can park in the large loading zone on Pontius.

Yelp
Our food has been great every time we have picked it up or had delivery!! Hot and delicious!

Yelp
UPDATE: Tuesday, August 17, 2021 Came in to try their Barbecue Pork Egg Foo Young. It was amazing. Different than what I expected...but in a good way. The brown sauce was incredible. It was like a huge soup bowl with whole button mushrooms, carrots, bok choy, snow peas and a lot of BBQ Pork. I loved it. The cost was $14.95 and a great value for the amount of the sauce and the plate sized patty. I also like that I received my own liter of water and the hot chili oil was perfect. I also picked up an order of Moo Shu Pork to take home for the wife.
google avatar

Don S.

Yelp
Hole-in-the-wall local restaurant that has been at West Los Angeles for decades. I only ordered from their Szechuan menu, love spicy food! Spicy "water boiled" beef was 3/5, one can find much better ones in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV). Popcorn Chicken was 4.5/5, just as good as the ones in SGV. Lobster at $15.99/lb cook anyway you like is to die for. Their crab with fried garlic is very good too! Good service, maybe bc I speak the language. Saved $15 RT gas by not going to the SGV when I have the cravings
google avatar

Callie S.

Yelp
Decent Chinese food around the area. A LOT of takeout orders while we were dining in so the service was a little slow. This place is good if you're craving Chinese food. We had half Peking duck, crab soup and beef stir fry on a sizzling heated plate. All the food is pretty good and will come back again -maybe for take outs next time.

Jane Y.

Yelp
I take back the bad review. I accidentally reviewed wrong restaurant. Hop Woo is excellent!!! Consistent good food.

Yelp
Went to Hop Woo after attending the UCLA basketball game on a rainy night. This joint is in the corner of a strip mall on Sawtelle and Olympic Boulevard. There is a small parking lot in front. You enter where the kitchen and counter is, and then proceed into a very low key dining area. There were a good number of people eating when we arrived and the service was rather slow. However, everything we ordered was extremely delicious. Good tea followed by what they call a small bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. Being gluten intolerant I couldn't share in the soup but my son and brother enjoyed it with plenty left for take home. For me they modified the honey glazed walnut shrimp and it was superb. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the walnuts were crunchy good. The sweet and sour shrimp had no soy sauce so that was GF and again, the flavor of the shrimp and pineapple, with onions and green bell peppers, was so good I ate the entire large portion that they serve. The sauce was the right combination of flavors without being thick or cloying that usually has me avoiding this dish. The Mongolian beef got raves as did the BBQ pork with Vermicelli although there was enough Vermicelli for 4 people. I haven't had Cantonese food in forever but they mix Cantonese with Szechuan. Hop Woo earned 5 stars for the food.

Yelp
Very tasty good fast service , friendly staff , street parking only . I will come back here to try other dishes Thank You
google avatar

Yelp
The best best Szechuan flavors ever. The cold chicken in chili oil is soo good and the beef intestines in oil is also amazing. I love their roast duck. The pork and green chili stir fry is hands down the best Chinese comfort food. Wow. I love this restaurant. Always eat here when I'm in town.
google avatar

Thao T.

Yelp
We were craving beef chow fun and this place really hit the spot. The salt and pepper squid was also really good. Portions were generous and service was good. There's a parking lot in the front and no issues finding a spot. Definitely recommend this place

Yelp
The food is delicious n freshly made, service very fast. The place is clean, staff is friendly

Yelp
Best Chinese food in the west. One less star for small/difficult parking but otherwise this is our go to place for good comfort Chinese food. Consistent tastiness & great service.

Yelp
Date: November 12, 2021 The love wanted Chinese food so yelped around and saw that Hop Woo was close by. We normally go to Hop Li but decided to try something new this time around. It was 2:59pm but decided to ask when lunch specials ended anyway. Like most, it ends at 3pm. The lady was super nice and accommodating and let me order the lunch special even though it was 3 on the dot. So we ordered: 1. Orange chicken - served with rice for lunch special. Loved the flavor, it wasn't over powering and the chicken sizes were also on point! I didn't feel like I was eating a gunk of sauce or all chicken w/o sauce. 2. Chicken fried rice - a little too much oil but it is fried rice so not surprised. This one was a little bigger portioned than the other two dishes. Little on the blander side but still delicious! 3. Beef and broccoli - I loved that the asked if I wanted American broccoli or Chinese broccoli. I had to stop and think about which one I normally eat because I've never been asked . This one was probably my favorite. The sauce on the meat was on point and the broccoli were soft enough to bite but not to the point where it's breaking a part. We're only about a 5 minute drive so ordered on the phone, picked it up, tipped her 15%, and went on my way. Unfortunately a little higher prices even for lunch special, but glad to have tried something new! Will be back to try other dishes!

Yelp
As a chengdu girl, this is very authentic sichuan food in LA! Love it - can't believe I never found this place earlier

Yelp
I truly love that place All their dishes are authentic Chinese and delightful I go all the way from the San Fernando valley for this place
google avatar

Yelp
Overall not bad. Nothing rlly that amazing. All very okay. Plates were a little dirty.. Staff seems short staffed now so everything takes forever.
google avatar

Keo N.

Yelp
Last big epic dinner here was August 2018. Fast forward September 2020, the space was been remodeled and the great chef has returned. No need to drive to the sgv to have authentic Cantonese and Sichuan food. Easily the best Chinese food on the Westside.

Janet R.

Yelp
i found a cockroach in my rice. the place is disgusting. i asked them to bring me a fresh portion of rice and they DENIED it
