Denver’s Best Pizza Restaurants | Eater Denver

"Helping to put Tennyson Street on the map when it opened to instant raves in 2010, this craft beer and pizza parlor has held its edge with a menu that goes well beyond the norm. It starts with a hefty list of custom ingredients for topping New York-, Sicilian-, or Detroit-style sourdough crusts: Think smoked tofu, ham hock, blue cheese, and chipotle honey. It continues with the Artisan Pie of the Month, which could feature mortadella, provolone, green olives, and giardiniera à la a muffuletta or Sunday supper–style meatballs, dollops of polenta, caramelized onions, and balsamic reduction. And then there’s the slice of the day, which might be a play on crab rangoon or street tacos. Throw in an ever-rotating taplist, and the options are truly near-endless." - Paul Albani-Burgio

I really enjoyed the grilled cheese and tomato soup combo. The cheese pull was unmatched. The pizzas were all good as well

My husband and I got takeout from here the other day and shared: - Crispy Pork Sandwich with Pasta Salad - BYO Detroit Style Pizza with Pineapple, Pepperoni, and Caramelized Onions Everything was phenomenal. I'm always hesitant to order sandwiches for takeout but this one was still so good. The pizza had the crispy cheese crust that was done perfectly. I'd love to dine in because I'm sure it's even better.

We are from Texas and on vacay. Came to Denver for ball game. Then we wanted a good home made pizza. Omg! It was FABULOUS! We had The Detroit with 5 toppings and it was well worth the money! This place is a must!!!

Google
Good Detroit style pizza and beer. Wasn’t a huge fan of the Carolina style wings as they had honey mustard sauce on them. Also be mindful of the 4% service charge automatically added on to your bill. The service was quick and efficient, and location was great right on Tennyson St. I’ll return to try the NY style pizza and some different wings.

Great little spot tucked behind what looks very nondescript behind the doors. Great outdoor space for kids to play while grownups eat. They even have toys for the little kids - cornhole for the bigger kids or young at heart.

Google
Sourdough crust and a great beer selection. Went for a business dinner, sat out side at the large patio. Beer selection was 15 deep on tap and another 20 in cans and bottles. They have pitchers down to tasters. The pizza was phenomenal, choice of either New York Style with a small (12" and large 15") and Detroit Style (8x8 cut into 4 squares) toppings are 1.13 per and they have some good ones. Brisket, ham hock, artichokes and quite a bit more. We also had the cheese bread app. This was 6 pieces with an gooey center of cheese and butter. I heard they have doughnuts from spare dough but they only have them until they run out. We were not lucky. Patio had live music and the staff was really friendly and just happy that the table is happy. Parking is mostly on the street which can get very busy and hard to find.

Google
Delicious pizza!!! We tried 3 different kinds and I really can’t pick a favorite, they were all so good! The Detroit style was AMAZING! Really nice employees and great atmosphere.

Yelp
Classic neighborhood gem with a mix of old and new vibes. Totally our jam! We were looking for a place with a diverse menu and beer, that could hold a sizable group without us knowing exactly how many people would show up (was an open meet-and-greet of family and friends to welcome our daughter to her first year of college in Colorado). We reserved a few weeks in advance and they kindly parked us at two patio tables under some misters, right next to the green space with cornhole and other yard games. Perfect! No wonder this place is a Denver staple. Clean, great service, vast menu, and good & unique beers on tap. Checked all the boxes for us and we will definitely be back.

Yelp
No wait on a Sunday night at 5pm. Very kid-friendly - lots of families & kids, particularly in the covered/heated patio. There was even a shelf with a few simple baby toys and board books. * Garlicky Cheese Bread ($10.50) - 3.5 stars I think they could've gone stronger on the garlic! I didnt know until looking back at the menu that this was a garlic bread - I mostly tasted the cheese. Enjoyed the stretchiness of the cheese, the softness of the bread, and the sharpness and texture of the marinara sauce. * Sourdough New York (Lg $19.95) - 4.5 stars Wow, the sourdough crust was amazing! Just the perfect crunch that disintegrates under your teeth. We got italian sausage and that was flavorful & fine, but truly the star of the show was that perfect crust! * Roasted Pear Salad ($15) - 3.5 stars Decent salad. The ingredients were good in theory, but I found the vinaigrette to be a little too light, the greens not quite crisp enough. The pear may have been over-roasted - I found them too soft and lacking flavor. A good enough filler if you're looking to order salad, but don't go out of your way to order this. * Mindbender - 4.5 stars Refreshing, hoppy, zesty. My partner got multiple glasses, and we tried to buy a six pack to bring to our friends, but it's on draft so the closest thing was a 32 oz bottle.. * Sippin' Tropical Sour - 4 stars A good, light sour!

Yelp
We've tried a lot of pizza places around the west side of the neighborhood and this one has won our hearts. The dough is outstanding. Can't go wrong with either NY or Detroit style- they're both great. Our 1 year old loved the pineapple we had on our pizza so next time I'm definitely ordering some on hers as well. For as many pizzas as they cook and as busy as it was that Saturday afternoon, it really didn't take too long to get our pizzas which was awesome. One thing we thought was interesting was that they only sell specialty beer, no coors or such. Will be back soon!

Yelp
Great spot to catch up with friends over pizza and beer. Had a live oak hefeweizen and great notion blueberry muffin Excellent service from Sarah!

Yelp
My husband Ryan Reynolds and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Hops and Pie, and it was truly delightful. From the moment we entered, we were greeted with warm smiles and impeccable service. The vibrant atmosphere, adorned with captivating artwork, set the perfect tone for our evening. While Ryan opted for a refreshing cider, I enjoyed a crisp glass of water. We indulged in a Detroit-style pizza with cupping pepperoni, accompanied by garlicky cheesy bread. The cheesy bread, though not what I anticipated, pleasantly surprised me with its unique kick. However, I found myself leaning more towards the delectable pizza, boasting a harmonious blend of flavorful sauce and cheese. While the pepperoni may have been slightly overcooked, the overall taste surpassed our expectations. What truly stood out was the outstanding service - fast, attentive, and personalized. The rhythmic tunes and inviting ambiance further enhanced our dining experience, leaving us eagerly anticipating our next visit. Additionally, we appreciated the thoughtful amenities, such as the play area for children and the opportunity to admire and purchase artwork displayed on the walls. In essence, our time at Hops and Pie was a memorable one, filled with culinary delights and genuine hospitality. We eagerly look forward to returning and exploring more of their enticing menu offerings. Cheers to Hops and Pie for a truly exceptional dining experience!

Yelp
We made the trek from East Denver last Sunday to revisit an old favorite, Hops & Pie. See my previous review for background. Much has changed, but it remains my favorite place in town for pairing beer and pizza that rise above the mids. What's new since 2019? Good: Success brings expansion and the patio provides a great place to chill with more seating. Additional creative menu items abound. Today's butternut squash/apple soup was a delicious surprise that tips its hat to the owners' culinary backgrounds. Servers are much more friendly than they used to be. A matter of taste: H&P switched to sourdough crust a while back. I get it, but I miss their old crust. Sourdough's commonplace, but the old crust's uniqueness set H&P apart. I liked it better. Sourdough just doesn't work for me with the Detroit-style. Too chewy and cumbersome, but it's great with thin crust. YMMV. Lame: Pizza this good should not come with packets of cheap parmesan that detract from the pie itself. San Marzano cellulose? No thanks. Still four stars for a superlatively curated beer selection with quality grub and good vibe.

Yelp
Very impressed with this spot. Heard a lot of hype and finally made it in - pizza and beer done the right way. Fun selection of taps, I've heard they get some rare kegs regularly. Service was prompt and friendly. Wait to be seated, and you have your choice of a standard casual indoor setup or a heated outside patio Took advantage of the Tuesday deal of the day. Small cheese Detroit or NY style pizza and a beer for $15. Deal! (Add toppings for $1.31 each). Wings were great pizza was just as good. I could easily see this being a regular spot in the works.

Yelp
Spent Labor Day weekend in Denver for the first time and we found this absolute gem while searching online. I cannot express enough how much we loved this spot. The food was incredible, that garlic cheese bread blew us away and the pizza was some of the best I've ever had. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming and we got our food pretty quick! Went at around 8PM and the vibes were fun yet relaxed. If I'm ever in Denver again, returning is a MUST!

Yelp
Service was friendly and fast and the food was delicious!! The pizza crust was so crispy. Everything was made perfectly

Yelp
I should have known when the line was out the door to wait for a table on a snowy day that the food was going to be good. Our wait was less than 30 minutes and once we were seated, service was super fast and super friendly. Hops & Pie has great wings that are jalapeño brined. The Korean style BBQ has the perfect amount of spice and the appetizer comes with a pound of wings. Their pizza pies are made from a 2011 sourdough starter and can be Detroit or New York style. I prefer a thinner crust so I went with a small, NY style pizza which had plenty of leftovers to take home. Tap handles hang from the ceilings in the bar area while artwork for sale and other sketches and murals adorn the walls.

Yelp
Perfect visit today. Thank you, Crystal, for the personable, but not intrusive service. I admit that I don't go in this place unless A) they have a live band on the patio or B) they have bar seats (love the most left seat but the place is stellar regardless), or C) if you call and the slice of the day has pepperoni, banana peppers, and mozzarella. Great selection of beer, and I will say that any place that carries Pliny the Elder for a reasonable price is...the bomb. Titos on tap, great regular crew, and...wait for it...the house made hot sauce is only rivaled by Tacos Tequilas Whiskey on 32nd. Seriously, the hot sauce is worth going to the place alone. I have bought it in bulk, and it goes on everything. You HAVE to either like hops or pie. So...stop reading my review and go there right now. Definitely recommend and see you there.

Yelp
We recently had my daughter's first birthday at Hops & Pie. Leah was my point of contact for organizing everything. She was so helpful and communicative that it made planning a breeze! She reserved a few tables by the turf area outside which was perfect for all the kids to play and run around on. The service and food was phenomenal. They were so attentive and the food came out so quickly. I can't recommend Hops & Pie enough!

Yelp
3.5/5. Finally made it in to Hops & Pie late on a Sunday afternoon. There was not a wait and we got our food within about 20 mins of sitting down. The outside area had great vibes with picnic tables, patio tables, and some spots in the shade. We ordered a slice of the day (Sicilian with bacon, camelotes onions, goat cheese, and maybe another thing or two I'm forgetting!) and it was pretty disappointing. The slice tasted old and like it was just reheated out of the fridge. The crust had a nice sourdough flavor, but cheese was super rubbery and lacked flavor. There were very few pieces of bacon. Would not order again. We also got a large NY style, 1/2 plain 1/2 pepperoni. This was much better! Again, the crust was the best part, and it wasn't the greatest pizza we've had, but it was still tasty and we enjoyed it. Biggest area for improvement from our experience was the sauce. I'd come back again for the great vibes and to try some of the hops!

Yelp
HOLY SMOKES IS THIS PLACE THE CATS ASS OR WHAT?! Detroit style where every piece is a corner piece. Vegan options that were per two vegans in the group the "best vegan pizza of their life" and that Colorado special red pepper flakes that will burn your hole out. Yeah baby!!!! This place will do you in all the right ways and you'll come back asking for more. Great service, great food, great greatness. 10/10

Yelp
Food was good. The server seemed annoyed to be there. She was short and annoyed to have to explain the water stations.

Yelp
Blessed to have finally eaten at Hops & Pie. So good! I'm not normally a huge pizza fan, but my friend brought me here to enjoy hops and pie before going to an Avalanche game. The beer board is a little hard to read at first, but once I understood how it was laid out, I was pleased with the variety of taps available. Something to match every food item on the menu. My friend and I shared the Artisan Pie of (that) Month, which had Pesto, Italian Sausage, Shitake Mushroom, Smoked Mozzarella, Candied Jalapeno, Red Onion & Shaved Parmesan. Finished with EVOO Drizzle of course. Fresh and packed with flavor. Definitely want to come back again and try more pizza combinations. Just arrive early to avoid parking challenges!

Yelp
Another delicious meal here, this time with three vegan pizza. So good, still, after all of these years. We no longer live in Denver but come back here everytime we're in town. Service is also still great.
google avatar

Parker S.

Yelp
Came here for the vegan pizza options! Fun spot! Inside seating, bar area with TV and outside seating. Good service. Good pizza. And NA beer option. Their menu is basically build your own pizza kinda style.
google avatar

Dakota E.

Yelp
Great beer (seriously), great pie, great tunes, good vibes, with a patio! What's not to love? It's my favorite pizza spot in Denver.
google avatar

Matt W.

Yelp
I'd give the pizza here a solid 4 but the overall venue is probably around a 4.5 so I'll round up the total review to a 5. Great beer list, friendly servers/bar tenders and an awesome outdoor patio. I like the personal Detroit styles - really good price point for the amount of food you get. The slice + salad deal is pretty good as well and I'd highly recommend trying to pear salad.
google avatar

Debra K.

Yelp
Quirky in a good way. Totally reminded us of Grinders in KC (and that's a huge compliment). Went because we wanted to get out of downtown area and Hops & Pies kept coming up on my "best pizza in Denver" searches. Sunday early evening and street parking wasn't too bad. Nice outdoor area but there was a 30 minute wait there because Denver was finally getting sunshine and no crazy winds. We just opted to sit inside across from the bar. (It's small but there seemed to be plenty of seats.) I wish I could remember our server's name because he was so awesome. Ordered the featured artisan pie (a triple pepperoni with great cheeses and a honey drizzle---can't remember the cheese but it was fantastic). We both had skipped lunch so we finished off a large pie with a couple of beers. Beer selection is stellar. While this is totally a bar with pizza (or pizza with beer) it seemed very kid friendly. Dog friendly outside as well. I would seek this joint out.
google avatar

Amber S.

Yelp
Food 4.5/5 Service: 4.5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Had the build your own deep dish pizza - excellent - and a salad - not bad. The ambiance rating is based on outdoor seating. Service was friendly and attentive. The pizza was so good I went back a second time while visiting the area. Yes, pizza twice in a week - don't judge. Just go for yourself and you'll understand.
google avatar

Jarred F.

Yelp
Family operated beer heaven that treats their employees right and makes absolutely amazing food. Recently added patio just puts a cherry on top. Insane beer selection! Oh did I mention they have all sourdough crusts?! Yep. Don't hop to Hops n Pie, RUN!
google avatar

Julia D.

Yelp
Great pizza and great variety. This is by far my favorite deep dish pizza in denver. They also have a unique pizza of the months and some nice deals on to go orders. We got the pesto, candied jalapeño shiitake, Italian sausage, red onion and smoked mozzarella pizza. A solid variety of beers that rotate, mainly from Colorado. Does get pretty busy on Thursday, Friday, Saturday but still never felt like I've waited that long. Plenty of places on same street to get a drink at during wait if needed. Causal go to and can't go wrong

Dan H.

Yelp
Ambiance was great with the outdoor patio and cool area for our kids to play. Food was great. The star of the night were the taco appetizers. Wow! Best thing I ate during our 2 week vacation eating out daily.
google avatar

Joy Q.

Yelp
Super friendly staff; convenient location in Tennyson Pear salad - good value. fresh ingredients. Decent portion Pizza (I had Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions, and arugula) - it's okay. Not the best I've had in Denver - if you like pizza on a heavier side, you might like it - allows customization with a wide range of toppings to choose from
google avatar

Molly H.

Yelp
Bopped in here to have some food and drinks and watch some college basketball at the bar over the weekend. They have a great beer selection with options for everybody (including cider!). We got the shishito pepper appetizer and a Detroit style pizza, and it was the perfect amount of food for two adults. Service was friendly and attentive, and the vibes were fun! Next time I'll be trying out the patio!
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
My favorite pizza place in the state. Been going there for years, lots of memories, every time the pizza is amazing. Never been unhappy with the service or the food.
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
I have a new go-to spot for beer and pizza! This place is great!! There is street parking, which isn't always so fun, but worth it. The patio area is large and has several umbrella tables. The inside is fairly cramped in some places, but that's part of the vibe. The beer menu is epic with several great options and styles. If you are a beer snob, you won't be disappointed. The pizza was seriously good and I love the sourdough crust! The service was great; everyone was friendly and attentive. We were there on a Thursday and it was packed at 2pm. Might have been something going on. We have only been once so far, but we both were very impressed and look forward to our next visit to try another pizza or maybe come for donuts. Cool spot!!

Maggie B.

Yelp
Amazing pizza, beer, and patio. This is my favorite place to bring out-of-towners. Also very child friendly
google avatar

Jenni R.

Yelp
This place has the best Chicago style pizza. The beer is pretty good too. We have been here a total of 3 times and the service is always great. At visit #2 on a Thursday night 8/4/2022) they were soooo busy. Turns out there was a special on their Detroit style pizza. Did I say it is so good? So good, in fact we returned a second time while we were still in town. This next comment is no reflection of the business: On the Thursday Detroit style night, there was a table of moms with their kids tagging along for dinner. I get it, you want to meet with your girl friends for dinner, get awesome pizza & bring your toddlers along. However, make time for yourself and leave the kids at home with your spouse or babysitter. At least one kid kept screaming which is very annoying - please take the kid outside and have a little chat with them to use their inside voice. I'm a mom and I would never want to allow my kids to disrupt the conversations of other patrons while indoors at a restaurant!
google avatar

Cat M.

Yelp
This isn't it. Our server really rubbed us the wrong way when we asked about flights and she responded, "Have you read the menu, cause it's a whole thing." Yes, they have a lot of taps. Also yes, I can and did read the menu. But we were here during beer fest and were here for a listed fruit beer event. So we just wanted to know if we could get the GABF special brews in a flight. This place was everything wrong with craft beer. It's not rocket science. You can just politely tell me the beer menu is updated and how many pours we can get in a flight. This place was busy and that's fine but we felt dismissed when we just ordered a couple pints. We quickly drank our beers and headed off to somewhere less pretentious. Won't be going back.
google avatar

Allison D.

Yelp
You simply cannot beat the $7 pie deal on Thursday! We get a pizza to go every week, add 2 toppings, and it's the best $10 dinner for two! Their salads are delicious as well. The first time we came here we weren't 'wow-ed' but I am so glad we tried it again! One of our favorite go-tos in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Alexa N.

Yelp
Was super surprised how good this place was! Came here on a Friday night with some friends and sat outside on their patio which was super cute. They also had live music outside and was a family friendly place. The servers were very friendly and attentive and answered all our questions we had about the menu. As an appetizer we got the tacos and house salad. The tacos were very flavorful! The house salad had a balsamic dressing which was also delicious. We got their pizza of the month, which was amazing and I wish they had it on normal menu. Overall I would for sure come back and recommend this place to friends!
google avatar

Farrah M.

Yelp
We had a birthday celebration here and it was awesome on the patio. Kids and adults all had a fantastic time! Pizza was excellent!
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Decent food but I would say more of a venue then a spot to eat. Service was good food was ok!! Carnitas Tacos appetizer was the highlight along with the homemade salsa The kiddos ordered Pizza nothing special and in our opinion way to greasy. Pulled Pork sandwich has some flavor but definitely way to much food for one to eat. I had the Crunchwrap superior definitely stick with the Taco-bell option or homemade is way better. All in the service and look of the place was really cool. I just wails have to go in on another try for the food.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Best pie in Denver.... Even better beers.... I'm serious...!! Beta males can't handle this place... Manly toppings like brisket or ham hocks... Please don't get pepperoni or a cheese pizza here. If I owed the place I would throw you out!!! Please don't do it ... Man up and order something that might just change your life. Youre welcome....

Yelp
I consider pizza to be one of my favorite foods so I've been wanting to try Hops & Pie for a long time! I finally went and wasn't disappointed. They had a very large selection of beers and other cocktails, both local and from other breweries outside Colorado. We went on a Friday and sat outside, there is a large patio and some awesome live music (The women said there is live music outside on most Fridays). I ordered both a Detroit style pizza and the pizza of the month (elote street corn pizza) on the traditional crust. I'm from Detroit and picky with my Detroit style pizza so theirs wasn't my favorite. It was good enough though that we ate the whole pizza but the real show-shopper was the pizza of the month! It was so refreshing and all of the flavors worked perfectly together. I can't wait to see what the next month's pizza of the month is and try that one as well! Our waitress was super nice and the atmosphere on the outside patio was great.

Daniel C.

Yelp
Their tap list is amongst best in Denver. 5 stars The service 5 stars The specials 4 stars The pizza 3 Stars The burger 1 star Just had the cheeseburger. Barely any beef. $19 after tax. I don't know what was in the sauce but I hate it. Maybe mustard seed??? I really hated it. Go across the street and get a $9 cheeseburger at DBC/Fat Sully's. Twice as much meat and better.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
So, I never knew what Detroit-style pizza was because to me it was just pizza. I grew up there and it didn't get that descriptor until much later. Hops & Pie has it down. This tasted like a slice of childhood. I got pepperoni and green pepper and it was cooked to perfection. They had Comrade Superpower on tap! Nuff said! Now, on to the donuts. I am married to a guy who likes to have donuts at night, not in the morning. Most places that still have donuts at night are iffy at best. These were fabu! I told him we finally found a place to get his night donuts! I would gladly drive over to Tennyson St to snag some donuts in the evening. It would be worth the trek.

Gabby S.

Yelp
TLDR: a Chicago pizza snob approved My bf and I ate here after a 2 hr workout and we were blown out of the water. He's a Chicago guy and I'm a NYer from way of Florida. We love pizza and we approve. We split the pear salad (huge serving and super tasty) and split the daily/monthly (?) pizza special: vodka sauce, mozz, grilled chicken, pickled onions, banana peppers and arugula. I didn't feel like drinking but their beer selection looked legit, also if you have a sweet tooth their doughnuts looked great too. Our waitress was cool as heck, friendly and helpful. Will come back in a heartbeat!

Fred G.

Yelp
Pie was good, but when you order a pizza with some ingredients on half, try to make it half, not 1/3. Normally I overlook little things like that, but when one pizza and a root beer costs $30 you should get what you order. Still love them but still....

Travis D.

Yelp
Can I get a tub of that ranch? Because I would pay money for that. Service was excellent, Kat did a wonderful job, which is par for the course for the number of times we've been here And that Detroit deep dish is DELISH. But then you round it out with the beer selection and you get a big fan favorite. 10/10 would eat again. And again.
google avatar

Anna C.

Yelp
We found this place hidden among the many places on Tennyson . We are new to the area, new to the neighborhood. One of my favorite food is pizza. So far we've tried every pizza place around us within a few miles. We came upon this one last in our initial search. We had a delicious dinner there, so much so that we have not gone anywhere else for Pizza since then. The decor is basic, the staff is mostly friendly, but the pizza is absolutely delicious whether you are looking for thick or thin!

Yelp
Good pizza, dry wings. However, why are we still adding surcharges to customer's bills 4 years after Covid? 4%, really? Instead of putting this burden on your consumers, why don't you just pay your employees more. I'm sure you've raised your prices as well over the same time period. Absolutely ridiculous and greedy.

Yelp
Great pizza place, loved the vegan options and server's knowledge! Pizza and salad were excellent!

Yelp
Good food, but single 2 restrooms for a place that can seat 150+ is unbelievably unacceptable. But overall really liked the place.

Yelp
We rolled in on a Saturday and was able to get a table inside up on high stools in the window. It was nice to get seated right away but definitely weird with people walking by and checking out our food and there was a small fly buzzing around since it was all window. Our server was very nice but again weird situation due to our backs facing him and turning awkwardly to order. we started with the garlicky cheese bread. It came with marinara and some sort of chipotle ranch. It was pretty good and a good amount for 2 people. Our pizza came out shortly after. I would say the pan pizza was much better than the regular pizza. Cute place but not my fave pizza.
