The Best Burritos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"The Avitia family produces one of the great old-school, hard-way machacas in town. For it, they dehydrate beef in-house. Shredded and cooked, their machaca has an intense, concentrated flavor, the beef rippling with umami. Machaca, historically dried to prolong shelf-life, is made for rolling into a burro and savored before a hard day’s work. At Horseshoe, it shines on a thick flour tortilla with eggs — a breakfast true to the Sonoran Desert." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix’s Best Mexican Restaurants | Eater Phoenix

"Tucked into a row of machine shops on Buckeye Road, El Horseshoe has been a South Phoenix fixture since 1996. Run by the Avitia family, this no‑frills hut smells of masa and generations of home cooking. Hand‑torn tortillas get fried and blister into crispy chilaquiles, bathed in red or green salsa (or both, Christmas‑style) and finished with cotija and a fried egg. The chorizo steals the show, coarsely ground on the premises, gently spiced, and far more nuanced than its commercial counterparts in huevos con chorizo. Weekend mornings bring bowls of pozole and menudo, simmered to rich, homestyle depth. The machaca, Sonoran‑style dried beef, is shredded paper‑thin and served almost jerky‑dry (unlike the rehydrated versions found elsewhere), then paired with pan‑fried potatoes that soak up every bit of its savory intensity. With tortillas pressed fresh on-site, it’s a true Arizona‑Mexican feast. Simple, family‑run, and steadfastly authentic, El Horseshoe rewards anyone willing to navigate its off‑beat setting for a taste of Phoenix history." - McConnell Quinn

Phoenix, Arizona’s Best Restaurant Dishes and Drinks | Eater Phoenix

"It’s hard to get more “old-school Arizona” than a platter anchored by machaca — dried and rehydrated beef. The version at El Horseshoe restaurant has long been considered one of the most satisfying in town. At simple red tables in an unadorned room, diners tuck into what’s considered the best plates of machaca in town, alongside eggs, potatoes, or vegetables. Another great way to experience the shredded beef here is with rice and beans wrapped into a flour tortilla." - McConnell Quinn

A Roving Food Critic’s Favorite Restaurants in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater

"A family-run, industrial-area spot revered for deeply flavored, homey Sonoran breakfasts: the Avitia family’s machaca—sauteed with potato, egg, and onion and served with rice, beans, and fresh tortillas—is concentrated and restorative, and regional seafood like cahuamanta further underscores its commitment to traditional coastal and desert dishes." - Bill Addison

Google
Hand made tortillas! Fresh ingredients and excellent coffee. This place is one of dives you look for but almost never find. FYI place is small and gets crowded fast on weekends.

Went here for the first time, and it has my moms approval. My mom is very picky, but she said this place serves food just the way she cooks too. Loved the freshly made tortillas, and all the food everyone ordered was delicious. Highly Recommend!

Google
ONLY ACCEPTS CASH. My roommate ordered over the phone. I came to pick up my order and had to leave to go get cash because they didn't tell her over the phone I can only pay with cash. I ordered my food without sour cream yet it still came with it. Thankfully it wasn't touching my food or I wouldn't be able to eat it. My food tray had a hole in it when I opened it so good thing I didn't need to use it to eat my food. Food was decent but not great. I'm very disappointed in the lack of customer service.

Google

Used to love this place I don’t know what happen, took my mom since it’s an old favorite, the new owners wife with the black tattooed eyebrows gave us already bad service as we walked in, she looked like she didn’t even want to be there!! got annoyed when asked for anything & over heard one of the cooks complain about our order saying that she wasn’t going to make the papas, took for ever to get our food!! the machaca with egg didn’t even have much egg, when it came to pay I asked for the amount, she later said she yelled the price to me but didn’t hear her, instead of coming to the table to give me the price, worst customer service I ever experienced, it’s sad to know that the original owner is not there anymore also beware that it’s really hot inside they have like 5 little a/c units & they only turn on one or two hella hot with this Az weather

Google
It was our 1st time there. Unfortunately the waitress was not friendly at all. She was a bit rude. My plate was lukewarm and it took a while to before our food got to us.

Google
Only order here for pickup and every time I ask for tortillas and limon but they always forget to put it in the bag. Meat is cooked in oil personally I like it better cooked in butter.

Yelp
Good hole-in-the-wall with authentic home cooking. Had the Pork with Red and Green Chile sauce. If you're driving by Phoenix this is a perfect lunch spot.

Yelp
I fear you may catch COVID from here. As of this writing, 1 in 11 Arizonans have COVID. The seating here is packed together, which is a really good way to spread COVID unfortunately. I think the owners should do the morally right thing and close the restaurant to indoor seating. Can y'all clear out some of the parking lot for outdoor seating? If not, takeout only is financially tough, but will prevent your customers from getting sick and not being able to eat at your restaurant.

Yelp
Delicious, friendly and a good amount of food! I highly recommend. I was able to practice my limited Spanish as well!

Yelp
Had lunch at El Horseshoe again today. I had to do the Steak & Eggs again. Absolutely the best flavors from south of the border. I still can't believe how good the green sauce is. It has just the right amount of heat. It doesn't need a lot of heat the robust flavor Stands on its own. The white corn tortillas are another treat in them selfs. Light and fluffy with a smooth texture. Slightly moist when you tear them apart a wonderful wisp of steam lets you know that you got home made goodness in your hand. Thank You again El Horseshoe for treating my taste buds to homemade greatnesses.

Yelp
I love this place for breakfast! It's not super fast service but the food is worth the wait

Yelp
Authentic machaca and homemade chorizo. I wish they did papas with the meal because that is the way I have eaten this breakfast plate for 30+ years. From Fresno to San Diego and now Buckeye/ Verrado Arizona. This is a hole in the wall. It is in an industrial part of town and very easy to get to. Restaurant was almost full and we were the only gringos in there. Very nice family has run this for about 20 years according to Angel. And I took a picture of his grandmother back in the kitchen. I think she thought I was loco. Their homemade green salsa is absolutely off the hook. The red salsa is very good but you really get the feel of the Sonoran style in the green salsa. Guys coming in during lunch looked like very hard working people. We like going to places like this. Oops almost forgot the homemade corn tortillas. YUMMY.

Yelp
Finally. A Phoenix Mexican restaurant that knows that chilaquiles are more than chips with a couple of ladles of sauce poured over them. Chilaquiles are not fancy or difficult food, which makes the lackadaisical approach taken by a lot of Phoenix restaurants somewhat baffling. El Horseshoe does them up right by taking a couple of minutes to simmer the chips in the sauce, letting them absorb some of the chile goodness, before putting them on the plate. Here, the approach to this very simple dish, is well, simple. Once plated, the sauced chips are sprinkled with a goodly amount of queso anejo, and that's it. No crema (though, it might be available upon request) and no garnish. I ordered mine with a fried egg (for an extra charge), which came served on the side. The delicious, hearty, and sneaky hot green sauce will make itself known to your mouth's tender bits when you're about halfway through the dish.

Yelp
There breakfast is just like grandma made it. The BEST. They also have the best banana & chocolate liquado (Blended milk, banana, & choco mix). The best of all there prices are very cheap.

Yelp
Real Sonoran food with friendly neighborhood vibe. Try the chilaquiles and the frijoles refritos. The horchata is also great.

Yelp
Based on the reviews and recommendations, I came to this restaurant with my mom. I was very disappointed and upset because the waitress showed no interest in waiting on us. She had no courtesy and nor any service skills. When my mom drew her attention so she would take our order, waitress attended other people that came in . She finally took our order, after a hour wait my mom asked where our food was, we were told order goes by ticket order..so we waited and more customers showed up and she took their orders and they got their food before we did. we waited there a total of 1 hour and 40 min. We got tired of waiting and went to pay for the drinks, the waitress acted like she didn't even care. I don't know why we were ignored like that but I know I would never have done that myself :-(. Left hungry and sad.

Yelp
Horrible horrible service! Worst service you can find the food is not great either had a gordita de birria and a taco it wasn't as horrible as the service but wasn't good either the only thing that was good here was the salsa. ...there was only 1 waitress she was doing the best she could was a pretty packed place and there was a guy at the front who was I think the cashier not sure since he seemed to be doing nothing! He was probably the owners son or something in that nature otherwise I don't see why they would have him up there. .he wouldn't move a finger to help out the waitress and when asked for stuff it took him forever I saw a lady ask him for a togo cup it took him literally 15 minutes to get that not because he was busy he would just wonder off talking to customers or doing some other nonsense. .he would talk to customers in the most obnoxious way he that he was being funny but it really wasn't. .my family and I will NOT be returning here! I do not recommend this place at all would give 0 starts if it would let me

Yelp
The food was good ,but the service was very slow and unorganized . When you go watch out how much they charge you because they change their prices . Look at the menu carefully it says one price but when you go to pay they charge you more and they claim their prices have changed and didn't have time to change it in the menu. They also charge you an extra dollar just for paying with your credit or debit card so take cash if you don't want the extra fee. I will not return, to me service is a top priority and this place did not have it.
