A 12-Course Sushi Counter Is Opening at Saks Fifth Avenue - Eater NY

"A sushi counter is opening in the underground vaults of Saks Fifth Avenue, serving a $95 omakase with uni flown in from Hokkaido and a caviar course. The six-seat counter, called Hoseki, is run by Daniel Kim, a sushi chef who previously worked at restaurant groups including Sushi by Bou and Sushi Zo. He’s serving a 12-course omakase with seared albacore, tuna belly, trout, and truffle." - Luke Fortney

I had a wonderful experience at a Japanese restaurant Hōseki in a shopping mall Saks Fifth Avenue's while I was out shopping. The menu was set, and there was no option for a la carte, but that didn’t disappoint me at all. I was served what seemed like 8 or 10 small dishes, along with soup and crafted bites, and each dish was prepared right in front of me. The unique part was that new plate was made while I was still enjoying the previous one, so there was always something fresh to eat. Everything was incredibly delicious, and I even tried some types of fish that I had never tasted before. It was a delightful and flavorful experience that made my shopping trip even more enjoyable!

Great little hidden sushi spot by the jewelry section at Saks Fifth Avenue. Sushi was fresh and simply prepared which is the way I like it.

Google
Absolutely stunning meal. 10/10s all around, probably the best sushi I’ve ever had. If you want to try new types of fish but not sure what definitely come here. While the restaurant is in Saks it’s incredibly quiet and private.

Google
Fantastic omakase! The price, the quantity and the timing of the meal makes it perfect spot for a quick lunch, but with michelin quality sushi.. The only slight downside I noticed was the soy sauce they used was a bit sweet for my liking. Otherwise, the fish and rice was perfect, and the size of each piece just right. Hope they will be able to do dinner seatings too.

12 course Omakase. Around 60min. Intimate setting. The service at Hōseki is spectacular. Staff is super friendly and helpful. The sushi itself is good, and it is def a good midtown sushi lunch option. It is located in the basement of Saks.

Google
What a fun little sushi "speakeasy" in my favorite shop! Located downstairs by the jewlery, this new restaurant addition to Saks is delightful. Good cocktails and fresh / delicious sushi. The chef we had was engaging and nice. We enjoyed our time and it was basically just us and another couple. Nice and intimate, will be back again!

Chef Morgan and Chef Ambrely were amazing. They put so much thought into what they do.. I love the creativity and the final result of their creation. Thank you for creating this special experience for us in NYC

Google
This is the best sushi restaurant in nyc!!! Can’t recommend it enough. The fish was incredibly fresh and chef Morgan’s smile permeated the room. I absolutely loved the design and intimacy of the restaurant. NYs best hidden gem! Everyone must experience the wonder of Hoseki

Yelp
Chic new Omakase spot conveniently located in the basement of Saks 5th with a few unfortunate pitfalls. Hoseki is veiled behind a curtain and otherwise set next to the returns counter. Unfortunately the noise and chatter from the return counter is very audible and does mar the atmosphere. The decor looks like Aime Leon Dore was in charge in the best way. It is saturated with interesting shades of green and the tableware is stunning. The omakase itself was good not great. The fish was quite fresh and treated well. It is served simply without excessive garnish. My main issue was with the shari (the rice). It was both overcooked and over-seasoned giving it a gluey consistency and overpowering the fish with vinegar. Still, most pieces were tasty and beautifully presented. Overall this is a serviceable omakase option I might stop in at if I'm shopping here.

Yelp
Hoseki is a truly unique dining experience. It's a six-seat omakase restaurant located in the vault of the Saks Fifth Avenue store. The ingredients are flown in fresh from Japan, and the chef's creativity and skill are on full display in each dish. We had a reservation and were greeted warmly upon arrival. The host explained the omakase menu to us, and we were excited to see what was prepared. All of the courses were delicious - uni, scallop, amberjack, wagyu beef, salmon roe . Tips: Make a reservation. $95 price tag for one hour. Only open for lunch. Come with an open mind and be prepared to try new things. Savor each dish and enjoy the experience.

Yelp
Super intriguing location in the basement of Saks right next to the returns. You can ask security to direct you to it, the restaurant didn't seem to be listed on the directory when you arrived. Had reservations but tbh we were dining alone on a random Sunday at lunch, I wonder if getting walk in reservations could be feasible. For starters, this was the first time I have ever been served omakase by a non-Asian chef, which I was intrigued by. The fish seemed relatively fresh and decent knife skills displayed. The rice on the other hand was too wet, to the point that the nigiri was falling apart before it reached your mouth, which was disappointing. The flavors were fine, nothing to write home about and slightly heavy on the wasabi. For the price point ($95) you can definitely get better omakase in other parts of the city and I don't think the novelty of being hidden in a department store added to the vibes (in fact you can clearly hear the sound of people returning their items in the background lol a bit distracting). I didn't get any really special pieces, I see other reviews where people got uni, but I did not and had to pay extra for Waygu. Doesn't appear to have dessert and no alcoholic beverages FYI. Overall would not go back, but was an interesting concept, just not the best execution.

Yelp
The experience does not stand out from the plethora of omakase options nearby. The place is noisy - we could hear the conversation at the returns counter very clearly. I guess it's expected since we're only separated by a curtain. The chef made no attempt at a conversation. This would be okay if we were entertained by watching the prep but the view was blocked by the box of rice the entire time. The pieces of sushi were extremely small and unevenly distributed. Some people got more while others got slivers of fish. At the end, it was a good thing we reviewed the check because we would've been charged for someone else's items. Very disappointed as I was really hoping for a great experience given the reviews and it's location. Two positives are that we were done on time and the fish was fresh.

Yelp
We came in for the 2pm seating and there were 5 total guests. We had lots of fun chatting with the other guests and getting to know Chef Daniel. The fish was fresh and the serving of uni (my fave) was quite generous! The scallop, Ikura, hand roll and amberjack were our tops though all the fish was well sliced and flavorful. Overall, this was such a unique experience to be able to have an omakase meal in the flagship Saks store. My water was always refilled quickly and we got sat very promptly. We may have gone a bit over our seating time talking to the chef but we never felt like we were being rushed out. We browsed the store after as well so highly recommend coming for lunch and shopping :) Would definitely come again!!

Yelp
I learned about Hoseki from Time Out NYC's Instagram account, and was glad to be able to try this hidden omakase restaurant inside Saks Fifth! On the lower floor amidst fine jewelry stalls, this tiny restaurant only seats 6 people at the top of each hour between 12-4 pm. I was able to get reservations online through the Resy app. Chef Daniel Kim comes to the counter to make each sushi course. When I've been to different cities in Japan, omakase for sushi chefs really is about giving your full, undivided attention to a single piece of sushi each course. This is not an experience for those who are super hungry and looking for a large volume of food. You are meant to appreciate the subtleties of the ingredients that enhance high-quality fish. During my visit, we were served fluke, amberjack, ocean trout, salmon roe, scallop, wagyu beef, and a crab handroll, to name but a few! For all courses, you pay $95 and they're currently only doing lunch service, though there's a possibility they'll expand to include dinner service as well. The quality of the ingredients are certainly high, though I would say they stick to tradition and don't veer too far from it. There's a lot of competition even in NYC for good sushi, so I can't claim this is the best I've ever had. (I reserve that to the incredible places I've been in Kyoto!) Chef Kim was very warm and kind, but quiet. I think given how intimate the space is, what could add to the experience is having him talk a bit about where he sources all the ingredients, why he's made each course the way he has, or engage a little more with those who come to sit and dine. It could break the ice in a room where you essentially are sitting for an hour with strangers! The quiet can be awkward, but then again. Perhaps you are an introvert that doesn't mind the silence. Otherwise, I'd certainly recommend supporting this business and giving it a try! If you're looking for a more affordable/accessible "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" experience, it's fun to feel like you're going into a speakeasy that no one else knows about.

Yelp
This place is a must see and try! It is a six seat counter that is located in the Sal's Fifth Ave's vault. There are roughly 11 types of omakase that you get to try and each one is amazing! Fresh and invented, the place has also has a drinks menu. As it was my birthday, we were given a free glass of sake and they added a candle to the dessert chocolate.

Yelp
With the feverish growth of omakase options in the city, you're bound to start seeing ones in unusual locations (before Hoseki, the most unusual location I'd ever had Omakase was in a food court in Chinatown). For a brief moment, as you turn right from the return counter and notice the discrete velvet curtains, you wonder "is this a private dining experience or a very strange looking changing room?" One of the two hosts ushers you to your seat. The place is small, but not cramped (it comfortably seats 6). The meal begins, and you are reminded exactly where you are as you overhear conversations about a returned pair of Ferragamo's- not exactly what you wanted out of your dining experience; but ok, how is the fish? It's decent. The quality and cut of each piece was fine. Nothing stood out for visual flare or freshness or flavor. If you're new to omakase, you're probably impressed. If you're seasoned, you know that you can have better for $95. My main gripe was the rice, which fell apart very easily and kept my fiancée quite busy picking up the pieces. What you really wanted was to pop each piece into your mouth in one elegant motion because the rice is firm and sticky enough to hold its structure as it makes its journey to your mouth. For the price point, you would expect to have wagyu as part of the package, but surprisingly, you were expected to pay extra for it. Again- you can have better for $95. Your alcohol options are nil (?) I mean, we weren't offered any and were not given a menu. I personally would have loved a crisp saké to accompany our lunch. It would be nice if BYOB was an option. Overall, a fun lunch option and a unique location. Something to try at least once.

Yelp
I heard about Hoseki from an article in Forbes and I couldn't agree more with the meaning behind the name i.e. "jewel". The sushi in this place has a special and unique taste with great ingredients and fresh fish ranging from scallop to uni and great portions. The place is quite intimate, calm and has a comfortable ambiance. The owner Max and chef Morgan work in tandem to make sure you enjoy not just the fish but the amazing hospitality. I am truly looking forward to this place expanding and going to new heights since they truly exemplify the Omakase culture. I definitely recommend this place and chef Morgan and Max 110%

Yelp
I love the sushi and experience at Hoseki. The omakase experience is diverse, unique, and should be way more than $95. Chef Morgan creates a great environment. The ocean trout, uni, and scallop were my favorite bites.

Yelp
Hoseki was a wonderful business lunch experience. We were in and out within an hour and it was conveniently located within Saks. The food is delicious! The ocean trout was my favorite but each bite really stood out on its own!! I will definitely return!

Yelp
Hoseki is a jewel; from the intimate setting of space and extraordinary quality of fish in every piece of sushi served, nestled in the vault of saks fifth Ave. The experience from start to finish is stellar. I asked for a few extra hand rolls. I've been back 4x & can't wait to return. The staff is fantastic. The attention to detail in the entire experience is AMAZING; this is a rare gem.

Sharayah W.

Yelp
The 11 course omakase menu was expertly prepared by a highly trained sushi chef, every detail explained, and the chocolates at the end prepared by a Japanese chocolatier also in nyc. The sushi chef was approachable and friendly, and the staff was polite and super helpful. It's a tiny place on the Lower level of saks 5th ave, but artfully decorated and private. Would 10/10 recommend this place!

David K.

Yelp
Excellent. The sushi was delicious. Even the uni- which I don't care for- was superb. The service was on point (attentive without being overbearing and the chef was a delight to chat with). Very reasonable price, especially after walking past $50k jewelry to get to the restaurant. The only regret was that the time flew. Loved it and will be back without doubt.
