9 Portland Hotel Bars Ideal for a Mid-Week Drink

"Portland’s newest hotel watering hole, Bar Chamberlain opened in the fall of 2021, following Hotel Grand Stark’s launch earlier in the year; the hotel was part of a years-long, multi-million dollar restoration by LA-based hospitality group Palisociety. Bar Chamberlain is understated and sleek, with art on the walls and a plush lounge atmosphere bathed in twilight-glowing neon. The concise cocktail menu (in particular the Tuition Money, made with mezcal and Cel-Ray soda) complements the standout new bar burger, with a poppy kaiser roll baked in-house by the excellent pastry program at Grand Stark Deli." - Jordan Michelman

Palisociety Takes the Show on the Road

"In one of Portland’s most up-and-coming corners is a hotel that puts its guests right in the thick of it. The Grand Stark is named for the intersection on which it stands, but it’s unmistakably Pali, with rooms decorated in a style that’s identifiably Northwestern but without any forest kitsch, and with public spaces that recall the days of the Grand Stark’s founding more than a century ago." - Mitchell Friedman

Absolutely loved our stay here! The hotel has a cool, modern vibe and is walking distance to Holocene, which made it perfect for our concert night. The staff was kind, the room was spotless, and the linens were high-end and cozy. We’ll definitely be back.

There are so many reasons not to stay here, but let's start with the hotel's greeting. I got there less than an hour before check-in. Although the room was ready, the woman at the front desk insisted that an early check-in is $50/hour. Yep! She insisted. So I waited 50 minutes in the lobby with her watching me the whole time until exactly 2:58pm when she finally said that I could check in. I emailed the General Manager about this policy, and he admitted, "These fees come from either the brand or upper level management and are rarely, if ever, imposed by the property manager." --Note that he said, rarely imposed. He went on to say, "It is often a challenge to address some of the “grey” areas with members of our staff, especially when they might be somewhat inexperienced." Clearly, they hire "somewhat inexperienced" staff and don't train them well. So what about the room? On the surface, they've redone a really old building to look rustic and modern, but that comes with some compromises... .like old wood floors with nail heads sticking out, skinning my wife's bare foot. Then there's the bathroom that has a shower and a toilet but NO SINK!! So, you do your business, flush, then you have to open the bathroom door and walk around to the kitchen area to wash your hands? How unsanitary! Also, the hotel staff didn't bother to check whether the shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were filled. At least in my room, they weren't. As you'll see from the photos, they don't either wash or replace their linens. Stains are everywhere. Bottom line, this is NOT a four star hotel, and it's barely two. I'm giving it one star because the front desk person was so rude, insisting on the $50/hour early check in fee when the room was ready. I'd understand if I'd come in at 10am and insisted on checking in, but just making wait to get an extra $50 out of me? Clearly, they care more about money than hospitality.

Wow! What an amazing place! Our first time here and we only stayed for one night unfortunately. It was very close to Holocene concert venue so we decided to stay here so we could walk to and from the show. We opted for street parking instead of paying for valet and we felt like our car was totally fine. We just made sure to take everything out. The staff, beds, and amenities are top notch. They have bars and restaurants on site and mini bars/snacks in the room. We unfortunately did not get to try either but they both looked and smelled amazing. We will definitely be back and I would 10/10 recommend this hotel to everyone and anyone. If you don’t like seeing homeless people I wouldn’t recommend staying here or around this area. We liked the location and felt safe. For the people saying the auto light in the bathroom bothered them at night, there is a switch you can press so that it’s not on all the time. We also didn’t find this place noisy at all like some of the reviews but we didn’t have a street side room so that might have helped.

Google
The hotel is beautiful and I loved the bathroom. Please note that while it looks romantic, it is a shower for one person. The shower head points straight down and cannot be adjusted, so not ideal for lovebirds. Our room had an A/C unit, and it was frozen, so we didn’t have airflow the first night. I’m not sure how quiet the interior rooms are but we had a room facing the street and you can hear everything out there. The hotel is across the street from an org that serves individuals in need of housing/food, which is amazing. Unfortunately, we heard shouting and banging from the street throughout the night.

Very comfortable bed with high-end linens. I had requested a quiet room and was pleased to be given one that faced an inner courtyard and was insulated from traffic noise from busy street out front. Grand Ave. itself is not fun for walking--too much traffic, too many unhoused people--but the neighborhood just a couple blocks away up Strand are enjoyable with many little cafes and cozy bars. The restaurant at the hotel was excellent. The hotel has been beautifully restored and modernized, everything clean and shiny, yet with character. Nice lobby for hanging out. Friendly helpful staff.

First off, I NEVER leave reviews. Good or bad experiences... but this is an exception. The place is semi decent. After we checked in, an hour later another couples key card worked to come into our room. After the front desk taking 2 forms of ID from me, and putting a $216 dollar hold on my CC (without even discussing the hold amout) and fillingnout a form with my name and room number on it, they call my room and say "we have no idea who you are sir. You need to come get new keys" Half insinuating that I could have just broke into the room we were occupying. Meanwhile, as we were parked curb side while trying to check in, a local PPD officer picked up a plastic bag on the corner and retrieved a firearm out of said bag, placed the handgun in the back of his patrol unit and gave the homeless man near the bag a citation. Not sure what all that was about but it was interesting to say the least whole checking into a establishment. Wont be back. A hotel had #1 main priority... keeping their guests safe and secure. And maybe try to be polite while doing so.

I made an online reservation. The day before my scheduled stay I called and confirmed the reservation and was given a confirmation number. When I arrived at the front desk to check in I was told there was no record of my reservation and that my confirmation number was invalid. I called the reservation line and was told I did have the reservation and the confirmation number was correct. The front desk said it was invalid. I asked the reservation line to speak to the front desk, and after putting us on hold for 20 minutes they came back on and said very rudely blamed the front desk for over booking the motel and giving my room away, which wasn't the case because there were rooms available. The front desk gave me the option of paying for a different room for a significantly higher amount than the reservation I had made, which I basically had to do because I was now stranded in Portland with no where to stay despite double checking before i came. After an hour of dealing with this nonsense in the lobby, and paying a ridiculous amount I finally got up to the room and the bathroom hadn't been properly cleaned. The room itself was fine, and I do appreciate the front desk staff who spent a significant amount of time to try to figure out the issue and find me somewhere to stay. But dropping people's reservations like that is not acceptable. And the proper response to having made a mistake like that would have been an apology and to give me the other room for free / a discounted rate in exchange for the stress they caused, or at very least the rate of the room I reserved. It's too bad because I was planning to stay here regularly for a reoccurring event, but I obviously need a reservation to guarantee I have a place to stay. So stressful.

Came to visit my daughter - she recommended it after I did my search. It's location to restaurants and other things was awesome. Not too far from downtown when we decided to go there. Staff was amazing, felt very safe and secure in the hotel. Weekends are fun - always activities going on along the same street. Great bookstores a block away. Highly recommend anyone considering a stay in Portland.

Yelp
I recently stayed at the Hotel Grand Stark for a quick 22 hour trip to Portland for a work trip. This was very close to the event venue that I was working with, so it was a no-brainer to book here. I was hoping that I would be able to check in early, and thankfully they were ready for me. The guy at the front desk was also in town helping from Seattle which I thought was a cool conversation starter! He was super personable and nice and get me all squared away with no issues. The lobby itself is really cute and they do have a restaurant on-site as well as a small bar. I didn't get the chance to try either, but the option is there if desired. This definitely leans towards the "boutique" hotel style. With it being an older building in Portland though, it makes sense. It definitely had a lot of character and was a cute option for one night. The good: The beds are really comfy! It's always a toss up for me whether a bed is gonna be too hard or too soft for my back problems, but I had a good night sleep here. The room itself was also very clean and well decorated. I love that they provide plush, comfy robes too. That was very much enjoyed when I was getting ready for the evening. Also appreciated the diversity of mini bar offerings, from NA drinks, alcoholic drinks, and a great assortment of snacks that weren't offensively priced. The eh: The first thing that I noticed when I walked in is that the rooms smell kind of weird. Like.... damp? I don't want to say they smelled like mold, but there was definitely a certain smell to the room the entire time that smelled off. Additionally, as a few other reviews mention, the bathroom set up is weird. The bathroom has a nice, roomy shower and a toilet, but then the sink to wash your hands and get ready is on the complete opposite side of the room tucked away near the mini fridge. Just kinda weird but they're working with the space they have, I assume. The rooms also feel pretty dark and gloomy. Last gripe is that they are pretty limited on outlets. It took me forever to find the dark outlet tucked underneath the desk on the side rather than on the wall. Overall, this hotel was in a great location for the purpose that I was there for, had great staff, and wasn't a bad stay. I would consider staying here again and definitely giving the bar + restaurant a try!

Yelp
2.5 stars The lobby was nice and most of the staff were nice as well. I liked that the room didn't have carpet, and the bed was decent. My issue was the bathroom was not clean. Not even a wipe down of the floor around the toilet or inside the shower. So as we noticed it was not clean, the black tile and black toilet seat and floor made me wonder what other dirtiness we couldn't see with the naked eye. There was a giant sticky mystery splatter that went up the wall by the sink area ( that is not in the bathroom, the sink is located in the room). It's noisy for sure, and you can hear a lot of things all night. We brought a white noise machine so that helped a lot. We paid an arm and a leg for our little dog to be with us ($200 extra dollars!!!!) for two nights. So it was like 660$ total for two nights. Which is outrageous, but our hands were tied. The website says "curated pet amenities" I literally have no idea what this could mean as we got nothing. Also not a biggie, but online there are photos of espresso and lattes and delicious croissants and pastries, but upon asking in the morning, nothing like that was available. The black coffee in the lobby was fine though. Just seems like another way to false advertise. There was another disgusting mystery stain on our toilet paper roll as well, so it just seems really lazy and unprofessional to not look over these things prior to guests checking in.

Yelp
This was my "go to" hotel for quick foodie/shopping trips to PDX. This was my third stay here and, my last. We arrived during a snow storm. The whole city shut down and when we went to check in we were told that we couldn't because the WiFi was down... since I've stayed here before my WiFi immediately connected in the lobby. This was a lie. The workers here have zero customer service. They act as if you're inconveniencing them by showing up. Finally, we got into our room and it was freezing. Because the customer service is so bad we didn't even bother complaining because 1. They don't answer the front desk phone 2. They don't care. We had to sleep with multiple layers on because the heat doesn't work and there is only a light blanket on the bed. When we checked out there is no one around. I left a note asking them to contact me and of course they didn't. Do not stay here!

Yelp
Clever. Clean. Chic. Comfortable bed too. I found the place to be quiet as a pin. Low season is my favorite time to stay in a hotel though.

Yelp
Was in town for a wedding and the hotel was recommended by the couple. It's a really lovely building, quaint and comfortable. Front desk staff were kind and welcoming as I arrived in the evening and was ready to go to bed. Loved the decor of the room, there are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. The only downside was the noisy construction across the street, but that was certainly beyond the hotel's control. If visiting Portland, stay at the Hotel Grand Stark and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
My husband and I landed early and tried to call the hotel twice, once at about 9a then at 10am. Both times there was no answer. Upon checking i asked the receptionist if there's a better number to call because we called twice with no answer. She stated we had the right number and she's been there the whole time and the phones have been ringing. They only had one person checking in so maybe they need another for better customer service. We arrived 15 minutes before check in and were told we couldn't check in yet because they were getting towels for all the rooms. Once checked in we did not have towels and our room was set to 64 degrees. I also immediately noticed that the rooms are VERY noisy. I understand street sounds and cars because of the location but we had 3 large windows in our room and they all sounded like they were open because of the thin glass. The location is decent, it is located across the street from CityTeam which is an organization that helps the homeless. That could explain the amount of homeless people in this area. Parking is not great, $40+ for valet or street parking at our own risk. On the last day of our stay I noticed a black shadow in the shower on the black tile. When I looked closer it looked to be shower mold and it was all over the walls. The bed was comfortable, but they only used a top sheet, not a fitted sheet so at one point I was sleeping on the mattress protector because the sheet didn't stay. GROSS. They also only have a duvet cover and not top sheet in between and I don't know how much I trust that. Sorry, we won't be staying here again.

Yelp
It's always hit or miss when you're trying to avoid the mega hotel chains. I usually enjoy the unique charm of local, boutique hotels but I feel like this one skewed less charming and more "well, let's just get through it and move on." The good: The staff is really friendly and its location makes it easy to cross the river and get around if you have a car. The okay: The room was relatively quiet minus street noise (crowds and traffic, especially on a Saturday night. It was loud until about 4AM Sunday), and it was clean and easy to make dark with the shutters. The uh-oh: The entire building is completely uneven and noticeably slanted (I got slight vertigo when I first walked around in our room). There is a not unnoticeable population of unhoused people that loiters around the hotel. Security seems to be a concern because there's a security guard who stays by the front door, and you need a hotel key to enter the building and use the elevator. The parking garage closes at 11:00 PM so if you arrive even 3 minutes late like we did, you're stuck with street parking in a not great situation. The worst thing that happened to our car was a mysterious cup of thick, dark liquid (like a chew spit cup) was left on our hood, and we saved a ton of money by not parking in the garage (it's $40+/night) but it wasn't ideal to have that be our first impression on arrival after traveling hours to get there. And finally, the mini bar prices. We all know to expect these to be ridiculous but we actually started a "guess how much this costs" game because every item was at least double what we expected (one 750ml bottle of otherwise cheap champagne was $45). Overall, it was a "meh" stay in a "meh" part of town.

Carleen B.

Yelp
Incredibly over priced for a so so hotel. Our room was small. The only chair was a hard dining room style chair so I had to decamp to the lobby to read. We had to ask for daily room service which never arrived. Full trash cans, dirty coffee cups and damp towels have little appeal. Even the lone elevator had a dirty floor although the room itself was initially clean. The Nespresso machine made only tepid coffee in the room. The Little Bitters Bar was quite nice with a knowledgeable bartender.

Rahul S.

Yelp
Earlier when I called to let them know that we were running late due to a delayed flight no one picked up the phone. I tried several TK es and it redirected to their central group number who apparently has no way to call or talk to the front desk. They said that the hotel wouldn't know until 24-48 hours. When we got there, there was no person at the front desk. Took several minute of buzzing the bell, calling, and banging on the door for someone to show up. The front desk person knew that our rooms AC unit didn't work and then let us check in. Once we got there and called she said that she couldn't get us another room. As if there were no other rooms with AC in the whole hotel. When my wife called again and asked why the front desk didn't tell us that the AC was broken, she said it was the "policy." Looks like fraud to me. Failure to report a known defect. She could have asked us if wanted another room -- I see there are rooms available on all the hotel sites. Walking down the hallways seems like the rest of the hotel AC works fine.

Yelp
Stayed here as recommended by the bride and groom (family). It was close to the wedding venue, but warning the neighborhood is gritty. The smell of urine everywhere was unbearable. This is also coming from someone who lived in Oakland for years so a little grit typically doesn't bother me, but this was on another level. This was not even the worst of the stay though. The hotel staff is TERRIBLE. It literally eliminated anything good about the stay. Someone should teach them how to smile. I have never recieved such poor customer service at any hotel. They refrained from eye contact at all cost and expressed the utmost annoyance at any ask. Well excuse me you're getting paid to work here and I'm paying to stay. They failed to clean my room one day because of a 'staffing emergency' and left a $20 mini bar credit for things that were collecting dust. I told them I was uninterested in anything and asked if they could provide an alternative solution. They said no to my ask for food at the restaurants because they are all third party and the mini bar credit is all they could do. Seriously?? One of the girls said if I could get creative they would try to accommodate. Why do I need to think of something when they messed up? I asked for a room credit or ride to the airport upon checkout and they declined. I've never ever heard of any hotel not compensating ANYTHING if they made a mistake. Make it right people. It's bottom line courtesy and customer service 101. When I asked for extra linens, towels, lotion, and toothpaste the staff member seemed like I was inconviencing her by asking for 'so much'. She also said she didn't know if they had toothpaste even though someone gave me a tube the other evening (none was left for me). Additionally, they failed to clean my room another day so when I came back I needed to reach out to them again. My shower twisted and broke the first evening and I couldn't turn it back on. I reached out to the front desk and she sounded extremely annoyed (no surprise). Apparently there was no handyman on site so they couldn't do anything about it and I had to switch rooms. What an inconvenience the day before the wedding!! The last morning I asked if they had anymore coffee and they said no because they take the coffee at 10, but other mornings it was there well after. They were rude, cold, and annoyed (again, no surprise at this point). At this point I will be working to get my money back. Avoid this hotel if you would like a pleasant experience in Portland. Unless they completely turnover their entire staff this place is absolute trash.

Yelp
I was looking for somewhere to stay in Portland a week before my trip, since my Airbnb canceled on me and only hotels were available at that time. It turned out that this hotel worked out much better. Strangely it didn't come up in my online searches until I did a Google map search and it appeared, in the perfect location. Blocks from the river and convenient to downtown, good restaurants and stores. This unique place to stay really made our trip special. Hotel Grand Stark is a beautiful historic building that has been recently completely renovated by the new ownership group Palisociety. The decor is unique and stylish. No generic hotel decor here - everything has a very curated, classy look. The lobby is beautiful with unique art pieces around. Throughout the hotel there are vintage touches, like postmodern dial phones in the rooms and everything sustainable, made of wood or paper. I loved the green and black color theme. The rooms have a unique layout and are perhaps a bit smaller than other hotels, but the reasonable price point and attention to detail make them enjoyable. There is plenty of storage and counter space, along with gorgeous, luxurious showers. The open design full shower with rain shower head and good water pressure made me want to stay in the shower all morning. The diner off the lobby, which the room service food comes from, had high quality, delicious food that was fresh, healthy and homemade. We got the overnight oats every am, a generous serving in a cup with big chunks of fresh fruit on top. The best coffee too. All the staff is very friendly, helpful and accommodating. You can't go wrong with this hotel. I will definitely stay at the Grand Stark whenever I travel to Portland.

Yelp
Very pleased with our two night stay here! Staff was friendly and the overall vibe was very aesthetic, hip, and clean! We were always greeted warmly by staff and I love that they offer coffee and pastries and a social hour at night. The bed was dangerously comfortable (hard to wanna get out of it!) and room amenities were very satisfactory. Only downside was the shower head is a rainfall one and I'm not a fan of those, and the water didn't get super hot. You're staying in the city so dealing with noise, homeless people, and parking really shouldn't be a shock lol. We had a third floor deluxe king room so noise was never an issue at all for us! Great stay for the value and location, can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Stayed one nite early June 2023. WONDERFUL *Awesome pizza and nummy cocktails in the Little Bitter Bar. Wait staff and food were great. *The 4th floor room was comfy and secure. Nicely appointed with drinks and snacks (of course they're pricey). Shower was amazing! Quiet and restful. *Breakfast in Amari Cafe was delicious - fresh sweet-n-savory choices plus tasty cappacino. *ALL the staff were polite, helpful, efficient. Amber and Sierra at front desk were so nice! I will def stay again and suggest to all I know who may wander that way.

Yelp
July 2023. AVOID IF YOU HAVE ANY NOISE SENSITIVITY. Major construction site directly next door with work beginning at 7am. It was so loud that the noise pierced through ear plugs and made even hanging out in the room unpleasant. The windows seem to do unusually little to reduce noise. This is the loudest outside noise I've ever experienced at a hotel. When I went to the front desk, the staff member was unhelpful and highly unprofessional. He said I had an attitude and complained about working back to back doubles. All of this is a shame because the room itself was nice enough, but I would not stay here again.

Yelp
I had a decent 5 day stay here. The hotel was nice overall, though it had quite a strong lean as if the building were sinking. The only things in the bathroom were the shower & toilet. The sink was on the other side of the wall. Not very convenient. The water didn't get or stay very hot so a long steaming shower was out of the question. There was only one large full size body towel that I had to make last the entire week. I eventually asked for another towel at the front desk since my room didn't get cleaned the entire 5 days I was there. There was loud construction every morning at 7 am so the outlook of sleeping in was grim. They provided ear plugs but I can't sleep with things in my ears. The decor was cute and the bed was very comfortable, though there was only a flat sheet & the comforter on the bed, no fitted sheet or light blanket in between. I sure hope the comforters were cleaned between guests as it was against my skin while I slept. I don't think the floor was swept before my stay as I found a few clumps of hair on the floor that didn't belong to me. I got a $18 credit for the room amenities at check in, so that was nice and I enjoyed some snacks during my stay. The tv wasn't very useful. It only had local channels and no movies. There was no Netflix or movie rental channels so I barely turned it on. The staff was nice and the restaurants downstairs had great food. It was a decent stay overall, but I probably won't stay here again.

Yelp
I stayed here in August 2021. It's a beautifully designed place and the staff is nice, but it's incredibly noisy, and I was shocked at the $125 pet fee. I only stayed one night, so the pet fee alone was almost as much as the room itself. Single pane windows means you'll hear every car outside your window, so if you're sensitive to noise, you should consider other places. Drag racing and motorcycle rallies are apparently a thing on Saturday nights in Portland.

Yelp
Gritty neighborhood. (I felt bad for the homeless, who were everywhere.) Window would not close completely so loud street noise was heard all night. (they do provide earplugs with the $200 a night stay) Layout of the room was a mess. I had to move the long bench at foot of the bed or I would have constantly hit it. There was little room to pass from one side of the room to the other. (watch your toes!) There was no soap at the sink and I was told they ran out! I had to provide my own. (Again, at $200 a night.) The bed was very comfortable, but the pillow cases were too small or non existent. Searched on hand and knees for any electrical outlet near the bed and with my phone's flashlight. I finally found one with a USB outlet as well. (It is black against the dark green paint and under the desktop.) There is some odd odor throughout the building, possibly from the old wood? Don't worry, you will get used to it. The saving grace was The Little Bitter Bar and the restaurant next door, My Father's Place.

Moshe D.

Yelp
Lots of construction noise that started early in the morning. If a good nights rest is important, than I would not stay here

Yelp
Hotel Grand Stark was the perfect hotel for our wedding block! They were very helpful with getting everything set up - including letting us use the beautiful study to do hair and makeup, providing us with water during it, and helping clean up after we had to leave in a hurry for the ceremony. They let us do our engagement shoot there prior and host an after party in the bar until midnight (past their closing hour). The rooms were clean and aesthetic. Thank you for being so accommodating and providing us with a beautiful space to celebrate!

Lili K.

Yelp
So checked in late at night after banging on the door so someone would finally come open it even though we called and said our flight was delayed. For context came for a friends wedding. Go to the room and ac does not come on. We thought may have to flip a switch we don't see and call and the clerk says matter of fact the AC in the room (not the whole hotel) doesn't work. I asked her - did you know this when you gave us the room? Why did you check us in and not tell us? And collect 3 nights stay deposit? She said "it's our policy." I asked her what exact policy and she couldn't even come up with anything. So the policy is to defraud guests. Not one apology and she said she had no power to move our room although it was clear she was lying about everything so why should I believe that. The next day, approach the manager and he wrong even make eye contact or turn around to acknowledge me and then when I brought up that our AC was not working all he said was.."Ok." And roll his eyes. Everyone in this dinky hotel acts like we are beneath them when we are from the East Coast and know how to interact in a classy way. This was not it. No one came to our room to look at the AC. All gaslighting that they are testing g something and nothing was done. It was barely tolerable when opening the window and it cooling down at night. Except for the AC issue and the vile staff, this could have been a nice charming little inn. Too bad your attitude and poor customer service makes it a dump. Would not recommend. Expedia is giving us a refund for the first night btw and they will also be reported to the better business bureau.

Yelp
The reception at this hotel is a disaster. Every-time I spoke to them they were completely frazzled, overwhelmed and didn't have to seem the slightest clue what's going on. Their "computer system", run on old laptops, was constantly "being slow". I I booked a hotel for an artists visiting town, the reception could not get the booking right or get it in the right name. We called twice and went there in person, when we arrived with the artist, the booking was STILL not in their name. Then when we went to charge the room the card I had put on file the card was "not authorized". How is a card on file but you can't use it for anything at all? Why wouldn't this authorization form have been sent right away? The entire experience was an embarrassing unprofessional train wreck. Avoid at all costs if you want any confidence your room has been accurately booked.

Yelp
I don't usually write reviews for hotels because they don't often go above and beyond. However Hotel Grand Stark is the exception. From the lobby to the carefully designed rooms, this hotel is beautiful! Nespresso machines in your room, incredible scents, high end shampoo/soaps, robes, weekday croissants and delicious coffee in the lobby are the lil extras that make a stay here relaxing and memorable. The staff is amazing too. Mira welcomed me when I arrived and helped with local recommendations and an awesome chat. She is good people. And Patrick, the GM, was super nice, accommodating, and made sure I got coffee in the morning. I was able to stash my bag for a few hrs which was an added bonus to my stay. I'll definitely recommend and will certainly return! I left smiling!

Yelp
I loved our room. It was very cute and even though the bed was awkward so I thought in the middle of the the room it actually works out very nicely. The shower has a nice shower head w excellent water pressure. The bed was cozy and very comfortable considering most hotels go cheap on the bed. Definitely a good vibe. Friendly staff and very professional all the way around. The only reason for the 4 star instead of 5 is this. The hotel was in a sketchy area and there was constant yelling out in the street. It is Portland so it's not the hotels fault. It was my only concern and issue. My husband had to constantly check on our truck. Parked out by the street. This street never sleeps.

Yelp
Raised as a cheap Asian, I'll admit I don't treat myself enough. When I'm traveling I tend to book whatever is cheap. I recently did a weekend trip to Portland for a bachelorette party and the fancy bride requested we stay at Hotel Grand Stark. I'm glad my friends are fancy because everything about this boqtique hotel is cute and modern, minimalist and cozy, and super affordable. Right when you walk in, the lobby feels spacious and you can tell everything is perfectly curated. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the forest green walls give you a sense of peace. The location is safe and close to many great restaurants and bars. Parking is $25/day. I want my dream house to look exactly like Hotel Grand Stark. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Apart from the helpful staff, my experience at this hotel was not great. They have slanted floors...which is ridiculous for a hotel. I had to change rooms. The second room's slant was less, but still bad enough to notice. The beds were terribly uncomfortable and felt like i was going to slide off. I almost ripped open my foot on a nail sticking out of the floorboards. Seems like they rushed the opening of this place. Would not recommend.

Yelp
I stayed here in July 2021 and had maybe the best hotel experience ever! The bed was very comfortable; room is clean and cute. Breakfast was lovely (and delivered to my room!!). Service was great. I didn't note any crazy noise when I stayed here, though if needed they provide earplugs and white noise machines. My only complaint is that the TV didn't have Netflix/Hulu or even OnDemand - I've stayed at several hotels that've upgraded to have streaming services and was kind of surprised that they haven't got the memo. Ultimately though would recommend!

Yelp
I did not sign up for nonrefundable room, but they said I did, and wouldn't refund a 4 day stay more than a month out!! What kind of cheapo scumbag hotel does that??? Don't trust these people!

Yelp
Good place with a great location that's coming out of the pandemic doing well. Good cafe at ground level.

Yelp
So disappointed for 4 star hotel. The wall can not protect all noise from outside . At night Even homeless talk outside you can hear all words. Start around 5-6 Am. you will hear all noise from all car driving that will make you wake up.So the hotel fix that problem by give you the earplugs but the room look very good.

Yelp
I have no clue where to start? It feels like you're living in the 50-60s, but with new modern decor as well. High attention to detail, the small things here are what makes this place shine--- and they have bath robes. The front desk staff are so kind and helpful. MIRA IS AWESOME. You need to book a stay here. well worth it.

Yelp
Lovely restored hotel but poor service - especially for the price. No help whatsoever for unloading the car and getting to the room. Valet just watched us struggle. I think it hurt him to get a cart when we asked. Cold water faucet in room did not work. Beds were very comfy and room was clean. Excellent dry martini in the bar!

Yelp
It was our first time in Portland and after exploring a ton of accommodation options and debating between staying at an Airbnb or a hotel, we are so happy we found the Hotel Grand Stark! It was the most reasonably priced and it was the perfect boutique hotel for our 3 night stay. From the moment I entered, I was so impressed with the lobby decor - beautiful modern furniture, plenty of couches and tables, and the attached Grand Stark Deli was as equally beautiful. The man at the front desk promptly greeted me and my room was ready 2 hours early! Parking: For $25 per day, you can park your vehicle directly behind the building. The lot is actually a city lot and the hotel rents spaces for its guests. $25 is a little steep but worth it for the convenience. You can also pay hourly if you'd prefer or if you don't need an entire day of parking. Bar Chamberlain: Two weeks before our stay, the hotel bar opened! we enjoyed a few delicious cocktails our first night. Again, great music, ambiance, and friendly bartenders. It was so nice to have this option to start off our night. Accommodations: Our room was a king and it had everything we needed (hair dryer, handheld steamer, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion). Bed was comfortable, shower head was nice, plenty of towels and robes. The only criticism I have is that the room was pretty dark. There was only one window and it looked out to another side of the building. The lights weren't that bright so that took some getting used to. Also, there were no hooks for towels--just one towel bar above the toilet. And, there were no drawers to store your clothes so if we had stayed a bit longer that would have bothered me more. Besides those things, it was a great room. Location: Great location, plenty of bars and shops in the area and it's a short drive to downtown and other neighborhoods. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend!

Yelp
Got a 20+ room block of hotels here for my wedding last weekend. The staff was incredibly helpful all weekend dealing with the large group. Very aesthetic hotel and great location near a lot of bars and restaurants.

Yelp
This hotel is great! Tori at the front lobby was tremendously helpful and so fast to get us what we needed. Our first room was noisy (I see another review mentioning this) so we did request a room change to a quieter place and that was no problem. Then we didn't hear a thing! Gorgeous details in the rooms. Floors are yes a bit rough in some areas and maybe need a tad bit of help to smooth out more. Great stay!

Yelp
Hotel Grand Stark was honestly one of the worst experiences I'd had in recent memory. I'll give them two stars because some might feel it's worth it for the unique design of the building. Issues: -No one would pick up their phone when I needed to contact the hotel. I called 6 different times. -The earlier bad review talking about the noise issues from single pane windows WASN'T KIDDING! There was constant shouting and screaming outside in the middle of the night and very loud traffic noise that woke me up multiple times, far worse than hotels in the actual inner city or larger cities. -The hotel did not have the breakfast, functioning room service, or bar service as advertised. Instead they put out a coffee carafe and some croissants that might not have run out if you get there early enough. -They don't put a fitted sheet on their beds for some reason, so you're sleeping between the flat sheet and the comforter. Hope they wash the comforter between every guest! -The shower is a neat design but you cant change the angle of the shower head and there's no curtain or door to keep the heat in so you're cold whenever you step directly out of the water coming straight down. -Computer system was down as I tried to check out. Pros: The hotel has a very interesting design, and housekeeping did a great job and were quiet as a mouse. Avoid Hotel Stark if you can! There are several other hotels in the same area that I've had much better experiences with.

Yelp
I've stayed at this hotel a couple of times in the past six months to get a break from a bad living situation and for the most part have had fairly pleasant stays. Is it noisy? Yes. Can it be drafty? Yes. But I still choose to stay here because I love the history of the building and the beds are more comfortable than average. My last experience was not the best simply because I did not get what was promised. First, the rates have gone up a bit. Which ok, I get it. Raise them a bit after you're more established, fine. Second, when I called to book I was told I'd be getting what was a suite. I know suites don't really exist here but I was suppose to be getting a 'better' room, their version of a suite. What I got was basically a windowless room. It had a window..to a wall..so..the room was like a cave. It was small, just a bed and 2 bistro-esque chairs crammed next to a tiny table, obviously not a 'better' room. Also, there was no soap for the sink. I would have used body wash or shampoo but the dispensers on the shower wall weren't full (or broken?). Third, I was told at check-in they were no longer serving coffee and croissants in the morning. Heartbreaking. This has always been a big selling point for me so it was disappointing. Now it's more per night and fewer amenities? The reason had something to do restaurant construction which didn't actually make a lot of sense. Would have been nice to know this while booking. Don't think I'll book again.

Yelp
We arrived in the afternoon and parked in the valet space. I went inside to ask for help with luggage (I'm 76). I felt like I was bothering the gentlemen at the desk since he was busy with his friend (I assumed it was his friend) who was leaning on the desk playing with his phone. He informed me that there was no help available. managed to unload my luggage and drop it on the sidewalk. Imagine my surprise when I found the the guy hanging at the desk was the valet Parker not just the pal of the deskman. It seems to me that he might have offered to help or at least hold the door since he seemed completely unoccupied. I then asked if we could get a cart or some conveyance to handle our luggage. He (after a ten minute delay) brought a luggage carrier to the door, shoved it through the door and left us with it. With some difficulty we loaded our stuff and he watched as we struggled to get it through the door and pushed/dragged it to the elevator. The wheels appeared to be dysfunctional. We got to our room eventually and found later that night that the sink had no cold water only hot. I had to collect water from the showered to fill a glass so I could take some pills. I could have used some of the bottled water provided but the price tag was $13.00 for a quart. There were towels in the bathroom but none by the sink nor was there any hook or rack to hang a towel by the sink, so for the duration on our stay we had a wadded up towel by the sink. There were no towel racks or hooks for use in the bathroom either so we draped things as we could improvise. I will not be going back to this place ever.

Yelp
This hotel was not worth the money at all. I needed one night and it was $170, which I was fine with because the pictures looked very nice. My boyfriend and I get there, and there is literally no where to park. So we call the receptionist and she says she doesn't know where we can park either. So we had to park my boyfriends brand new truck on the street a few blocks away and walk to the hotel in the icy snow. Then we get into our hotel room and the heater doesn't work. So we call the front desk and they said they don't know how to make it work. So not only do they not know where we can park, they also don't know how to use their own appliances. It was freezing all night long and the water never got warm. I couldn't even shower. And there was only one large towel in the bathroom. Assuming that couples are going to share a towel is kind of gross and unsanitary. I was just extremely disappointed with the customer service and care. I would not recommend. At all.
