House Brooklyn is an intimate Greenpoint gem serving an elegant, playful Japanese-French tasting menu in a cozy counter-seat setting.
"Tucked away in DUMBO's neighboring hood, Vinegar Hill, is a historical mansion known as the Commandant's House. The mansion was designed by Charles Bulfinch (you know, the guy who designed the U.S. Capitol Building, no big deal) and built in 1805. The mansion was originally part of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and was home to Matthew Perry when he was commanding officer of the shipyard in the 1840s. While the 3-story mansion is now privately owned, it doesn't stop passersby from peering through its iron gates for a prime photo op." - Column Five
"Still somewhat of a hidden Greenpoint Gem, HOUSE Brooklyn is the French-Japanese counter engagement from Kyoto native Yuji Tani, who also operates a restaurant of the same name (House) in Tokyo. Situated within 50 Norman—a minimalist-designed, multi-concept space that’s also home to a dashi specialist and Japanese lifestyle shop—the slim, 700-square-foot, eight-seat restaurant hinges on monthly-changing seasonal Japanese plates via a nine-course tasting menu. Chef says that he’s inspired by French ingredients such as foie gras, which he incorporates into his signature donabe clay pot-inspired pilaf (chef cooks his in a cast iron vessel) with shiso-flavored shibazuke pickles and chopped scallions." - Kat Odell
"This warehouse-y space on the fringes of residential Greenpoint has lots of surprises on its Japanese-leaning menu, including duck hearts, a hot honey gem salad, and lamb tongue, but my favorite was a hamachi collar — usually a byproduct of sushi bars — nicely charred and furnished with multiple zippy condiments, including yuzu kosho, made with fermented chiles." - Robert Sietsema
"Set within an industrial space called 50 Norman and tucked behind sliding doors, lucky diners will discover House. Chef Yuji Tani reveres French and Japanese techniques and ingredients and gives both equal billing at this spot, where a multicourse tasting menu delivers big, elegant and memorable flavors. Mozzarella burrata is accompanied by a thin, fragrant and sweet strawberry for a surprising start. Monaka filled with sweet stewed apples and creamy liver mousse is at once sweet and savory, while kue with lima beans and dill aioli is tender and juicy. Sawara is torched ever so slightly and stuffed with simmered daikon, then rests over a gelee of rice for a stunning presentation with bright flavor." - Michelin Inspector
"HOUSE, located inside the Japanese hub 50 Norman, is an outpost of the Tokyo restaurant. Chef Yuji Tani offers a seven-course French Japanese cuisine experience, with dishes like strawberry burrata and foie gras pilaf. Diners choose their own knife for the Wagyu steak course, adding a personal touch to the meal." - Travel + Leisure Editors
