"The setup at Hoyo’s Kitchen is like if Chipotle did Somali food, with rice, injera, or salad setting the base for build-your-own bowls or wraps. If you can handle a jolt of capsaicin, go for the spicy rice—otherwise, the basmati and injara options also serve as reliable foundations. When it comes to proteins, spicy chicken suqaar and sweet mango chicken are both great, but the standout is the tender, flavorful hilibari. Top it all off with a drizzle of the bright, green chile basbaas sauce and vegetables like red lentils, stewed cabbage, and chickpeas. No trip is complete without a side of golden-fried sambusas and a cup of Hoyo’s piping hot chai tea. Columbus has the second-largest Somali community in the United States and Hoyo’s food has been so in demand that they now have three locations." - erin edwards, kindra peach

Nice Somali restaurant in North Market. My first time eating Somali food. I got the rice bowl with the Mango Chicken and another chicken. I also got 2 types of rice. Everything was delicious and tasty. Everyone was very friendly. The prices are okay not cheap. I paid $18.00 for my bowl.

Google
Hoyo’s Kitchen probably has the best food I’ve tried at North Market. The service is warm, and the prices aren’t terrible. The mango chicken with the garlic yogurt sauce is incredible. And with the spicy rice? Even better! I’d love to try the goat next time.

Google
Recommend: beef sambusa, Somali rice, mango juice, spicy green sauce, mango habanero sauce. Good: goat (as long as you don't mind bones) Ok: mango chicken, chicken sambusa, beef suqaar They did leave the bay leaf in the goat curry, so look out for that, but the food is pretty good. The mango chicken wasn't as tender as we hoped. The beef suqaar also was a little on the tough side. The goat is flavorful but a bit chewy. It's not for someone who minds bones (I definitely don't mind and enjoyed it a lot) The sambusas are great snacks and are crispy when you first get them. The mango juice was sweet and refreshing. The sweet and spicy dipping sauces were very good but also on the sweet side.

This is our favorite spot , it only in North Market but in all of Columbus! It is a must whenever we are here. The food is fresh , delicious and addicting !!! Everything we have order has been amazing and the service is always top notch!

Google
My wonderful wife said she knew I’d like the food she saw there when she was at lunch at North Market, so brought home for me the goat bowl with the spicy rice, cabbage and spinach along with two of their spicy sauces. It was outstanding! All of it flavorful on its own and the goat was wonderful with only a drop or two of the sauces. I love very spicy food and my mouth is still feeling this meal a bit! Usually hot sauces have spicy and a vinegar taste. These were spicy but jam packed with a lot more flavors than vinegar. Delicious and an outstanding meal!

Google
At the North Market. Had the mango chicken, spinach, cabbage and rice. Vegan options available. Also tried the beef samosa. Liked the samosa wished it was a little warmer and crispy. Chicken was very sweet and some sneaky heat.

The young lady that took my order was above and beyond professional and friendly, wish I knew her name. I told her I was on my lunch break and wanted spicy but not too spicy and she mixed and matched the spicy and non spicy meats and sauces for me and it was perfection. I'm 6'4" 275lbs, the bowl took me 3 servings to finish 🫨 exceptional value and quality, especially for being a North Market staple. 12 out 10 stars 👏 new Wednesday tradition was born

Normally I'd be nervous to try African food, but lured in by the sambusa (Somali samosa) I decided to go for it, and I'm glad I did. The sambusas are DELICIOUS! Full of flavor without being spicy. Our only dilemma was deciding which was better the chicken or veggie. All of the the sauces are excellent, but our favorite was a creamy garlicky one. Don't skip the juices either. They're delicious and not too sweet. In all, Hoyo's was our favorite cuisine and customer service in the entire building/market. So friendly and fast. Note to other tourists: they validate parking for the Vine St garage.

Yelp
Pro - Food was super yummy, flavorful, and large quantity! - For spicy option, recommend spicy rice, chicken suqaar (spicy) or mango chicken (spicy and sweet), green chili salsa Con - Parking by the North Market. It is hard to tell, but the garage is open next to it (can get ticket validated inside the North Market) - Update (or remove) prices from Hoyo's website

Yelp
My husband and I wanted to try this place while visiting Columbus because of the great Yelp reviews. We both ordered the Safari Chicken and Beef Suqaar. For our sides we ordered cabbage, spinach, lentils and chickpeas. The food was good and the portion sizes were even better! Try Hoyo's Kitchen for yourself!

Nick B.

Yelp
Delicious food! Nice assembly line setup so it's pretty quick. I got the mango chicken with Somali rice, lentils and spinach. Very good but it's fun because you can make it your own and try different combos. I go anytime I come to Columbus to visit family.

Yelp
This North Market is exploding with exciting food options. On our fourth trip here just to eat at Hoyo's Kitchen. If you're new to Somali cuisine, this is where you begin. These folks are most helpful in guiding you. So many ingredients mesh well that you are bound to find the combination that best suits you. It works like many places these days. Pick between a bowl, wrap or salad. Then a protein and vegetables. Finally, sides and a drink. A popular choice: Somali Chai Tea. The Safari Chicken Bowl was popular in our group. I opted for the goat, chickpeas and spinach. Then a side of Injera. If you're into spicy, try the sugaar. The goat has bones. Not something I care for, but it was so good I persevered just fine. The chickpeas were fresh as was the spinach. I should've ordered the wrap, not the bowl. But I did get the injera. The injera was addicting. It's good for you, too. Made with teff flour and a fermented starter, they tell me it helps to maintain gut flora which helps your body attack the bad bacteria! 08/24

Yelp
Somalian food. Delicious. Flavourful. Homemade. Downtown Columbus, Ohio. This review is from my visit to Hoyo's Kitchen in North Market in March 2023. I had previously visited North Market many times so it was nice to come back and see a new business addition, Hoyo's Kitchen. I was in town for the Arnold Classic competition with a friend so we decided to stop in for lunch. FOOD -- choose between a bowl or a salad. For the bowl, you can get Somali rice, spicy rice, or injera which is the light bread that looks like Indian Naan bread but much lighter with an almost bitter taste. For protein options, choose between beef, goat meat, chicken, or vegetarian. I ordered a somali rice bowl with chicken which was tasty. It came in a plastic container with a reasonable amount of food. It was the perfect lunch after walking around so much at the Arnold Classic. TIP: Some of the chicken choices have different levels of spice so ask them about it. I love spicy foods but I can't remember if I got the mango chicken or the slightly spicier chicken suqaar since I'm writing this review over a year later. I recommend this local business and I'll certainly be back. **** GOAL of 150 reviews in 2024 - 66/150 total reviews in 2024 - 716 total overall Yelp reviews - Reviewed on 13 July 2024

Yelp
First of all, I'm not sure if she's the owner but I want to say she is, she's soooo sweeet! Or at least maybe a family member? She helped me build an all vegan bowl and the flavors were amazing. If you love spicy food, you'll enjoy the options with lots of spice! Not everything is spicy though, if that's not your thing. My vegan bowl: Spicy rice and regular rice Lentils Chickpeas Spinach Cabbage Spinach Cucumber Tomato Green chili salsa (on the side) I also enjoyed a Sambusa (similar to samosa if you're more familiar with the Indian fried pocket). It was stuffed with lots of delicious ingredients and happy they had a vegan one as well. Thank you!! Highly recommend. ***this location is inside the North Market

Yelp
Stopped in for a snack while visiting the market. I got a chicken sambusa and the pineapple ginger lemonade. The sambusa was delicious and quite large and the mix of green chile sauce and garlic sauce was great. The lemonade was so refreshing with a hint of ginger. Wish I had more room in my tummy to try the entrees

Lauren H.

Yelp
Best Sambusa I've had in a long time!!! The sambusa was so good I took one bite and any thought of taking a photo was gone!!! It was perfectly crispy on the outside but the inside was a perfect blend of chicken and spices! I would honestly go back and get only sambusas. They had veggie, chicken, and beef. I also got the mango chicken bowl and it was pretty good however the sambusas really outshone it. Still tasty. This spot is inside a market so there is plenty to choose from!

Yelp
Omigoodness-it was a flavor explosion!!! I loved every bite. Normally, I can't finish my whole meal, but I was addicted; I couldn't stop myself. I had the chicken Suqaar with spicy rice. It came with various selections of cooked and raw vegetables. I had the chick peas and cucumber. Chick peas were delicious; I would order that again. The cucumber wasn't the best choice for me, but still good. I'm in Columbus for work, so I ordered Uber eats. Vincent was very nice. Obviously, I can't critique the restaurant, but with food like that unless the restaurant is dirty you won't notice. Oh-YES please!

Alekhya M.

Yelp
Really good Somali food. Bold flavors just like Indian food. The chickpea curry is exactly like Indian chickpea curry. The mango chicken and spicy rice are a great combo for those who like spice. With the added hot sauces, I was really sweating it. The owner is amazing and friendly guy. We had a great conversation. Can't wait to get back on my next visit to Columbus.

Yelp
So tucked into the north market where you have so many restaurants to choose from. We diced to try out Hoyos kitchen after a long time. Have to say first, don't think the prices are comparable and a little outrageous. Previously used to be $13 for the mango chicken, now it's $18 WOW. That is a big difference and honestly if one is to charge that amount for a bowl, it should be packed with lots of flavor and /or quantity. Ordered the Somalian rice as the base, mango chicken, lentils, cooked cabbage. Topped with tomato, cucumber and spinach. Again, I think for the price they could add more, especially on the fresh items to at least make you feel like you got your money's worth. Also ordered a samosa. Originally ordered the chicken but that was not ready so he gave us the beef. Now for the flavor. The bowl was bland and I was super sad about that. I love ethnic flavors to build upon each other. However this was lacking and just felt like simple food. The samosas However was filled with flavor and was cooked perfectly, just wish the main meal had that much flavor provided. Overall, I would try them again but will most likely sample the protein first to ensure flavor is coming through and would also advise to add more since charging such high amount for a simple rice and meat bowl.

Nick P.

Yelp
I must have missed this place the first time I came here, I decided to try this place out. Service was okay, they were friendly. The portions are huge and it is pricey. I got Somali rice, beef suqaar, spinach, and chickpeas. I ordered a beef sambusa. The sambusa was hot and tasty. The rice was flavorful. The beef suqaar was kind of tough, dry, and flavorless. I was hoping for meat that was tender and requires less chewing. Chickpeas were delicious but spinach was okay. Overall i would fine like a 3.5 because it was the first time I didn't finish my meal.

Julia G.

Yelp
Cannot stress enough how AMAZING Hoyo's is!! Firstly, I had enough food for 3 meals. That's impressive considering I kept eating until I was stuffed because the food was so good. The Mango Chicken heat was perfectly sweet and spicy, and remained juicy through 2 reheats. The spinach kind of reminded me of Saag, it was great. Everything was so well seasoned and delicious, from the chicken to the lentils to the rice. I never eat all my rice when I get bowls from places like Chipotle, but I had a completely clean bowl by the time I finished. Hoyo's is absolutely my new obsession.

PJ S.

Yelp
I had a goat curry rice bowl here. The curry sauce was delicious but the goat was unevenly cooked - some pieces were super tender and others were still clinging to the bone - and there was a LOT of bone, so it didn't feel like a good value. I really enjoyed my mix of spicy and plain rice and the yogurt sauce was a nice cooking topping but weirdly sweet. Would definitely try again.

Josh G.

Yelp
People rave about Hoyo's but I found it to be just OK. The portion size is huge overall but there was maybe a teaspoon of lentils in the bowl I had. It had a pleasant earthy flavor but the chicken was super dry. Like desert dry. I was curious about the spicy rice and wanted to sample it but they would not provide a sample and suggested I get half and half. Which I did. I wasn't pleased they couldn't provide a spoonful to sample. The spicy rice was OK. If you don't like heat, I wouldn't order it though. All in all. Kinda meh and pricey for being just OK.

Kristie C.

Yelp
A Somalian stall tucked away in a food hall, Hoyo's was a standout find among many great food options (Moroccan, Vietnamese, Nepalese, bagels, delicious ice cream, etc). I was in Columbus for a conference, staying at the Hilton, and the food market was only a 6 min walk away from the hotel. The food at Hoyos is served Chipotle-style in that you get to choose your protein and toppings and build your own meal. The staff was just as friendly as mentioned in other reviews, and there was plenty of seating on the second level. I had the bowl with half and half Somali rice and spicy rice, half goat and half mango chicken, all of which were delicious and flavorful, but the chicken was my favorite: slightly sweet with a kick of spicy heat that enhanced rather than overpowered the other flavors. The spicy rice was also nicely spicy but not in the way that leaves your mouth hurting. I slightly preferred the yellow Somali rice. For sides, I got half spinach, cabbage, and lentils which were all so flavorful and refreshingly, not overcooked. The ginger-pineapple lemonade was absolutely delicious and went with the meal perfectly.

Denise B.

Yelp
Delicious! I approached with caution because I had no frame of reference for Somali cuisine. My fears were easily released for two reasons: 1) The staff is so nice and knowledgeable. They answered any questions I had and 2) they make it so simple to order...think a Somalian version of Chipotle...pick a base of rice or injera, pick a protein, and pick from some choices of hot and cold vegetables and a sauce to finish. My only critique (and it is a very small one) is that I wished somewhere on the physical menu or online, they provided descriptions of their items. I was really pleased with what I ordered and the staff was so nice but I feel like that would be really helpful. Also, try the Sambusas! You will thank me later. I can't wait to go back and try something new!

Christian S.

Yelp
Excellent food, generous portions, and reasonably priced. This is the first time I've ever had Somalian food and it won't be the last. Nice seasonings on the protein plus fluffy rice, beans, and fresh veggies as a topping. We also got the ginger lemonade which was a fun drink. Be sure to try this place out!!!!

Richard F.

Yelp
I love this place, their customer service is superior and the food is phenom! The staff here will def. help you find great options for you if its your first time My friend and I went here during Night at the Market. I ordered the Safari chicken with spicy rice, which is always my order btw. The safari chicken definitely is pretty spicy so if you are not a fan of spicy food you should stray away from it. The spicy rice wasn't spicy at all but had a great mix of seasonings! You get to pick your own veggies, and I always pick the cabbage and onions. The cabbage has such great flavor, highly recommend those! I recommend this place to anyone who is trying to off the beaten path of their run of the mill place.

Sophie Y.

Yelp
I have never been to Somalia but had plenty of other African cuisines like Moroccan, Mozambican, Ghanaian food, etc. First trip to Columbus and this restaurant didn't disappoint. The staff was very nice as I asked him some questions about the various proteins. Got the goat with cabbage and lentils for sides. Generous portion for a reasonable price. The meat was tender with good flavor. There were two types of rice: the red was super spicy and I picked the yellowish mild one. He also offered a few sauces but I didn't really use anything as the flavors were just amazing. Get something cold to drink with as my nose was running from the spiciness! Very good and I wish there's one in Madison, WI!!! Must try!

Sara I.

Yelp
Food bowl concept with Somali food. It was really good, the meat I ordered 1/2 portion of both chicken options. I preferred the less sweet one. Good portions, good flavor. I would come back again! It's hidden around the corner in bubbly food hall.

Rumesh V.

Yelp
This was my first time trying Somalian food. Since I didn't know what to order I asked the sever for their recommendations. He asked me to try half and half of their spicy chicken and mango chicken over basmati rice and sautéed spinach. Absolutely loved the combination. The rice was perfectly flavored and it blended in so well with the spicy chicken and the mango chicken. The portion might look large but trust me you will crush it in no time. Price was very nominal. It's located in the north market. Very good ambiance as well.

Jessica R.

Yelp
If you have never been to Hoyo's Kitchen in the North Market... RUN don't walk there!!!! After just one visit, this place has become top 10 places to eat in the city, in my book. Plenty of options starting from your base, to your protein, and to hot and cold toppings. I myself went with the mango chicken with lentils and chickpeas while my dude got the goat. He mentioned how it was the best goat he's ever had. Their food is *quality*. And quite filling. Also, don't sleep on their drinks. I got I believe the pineapple ginger juice and it was fire! I'll definitely be back, and it will be soon.

Kyle W.

Yelp
Pretty solid Somalian place and one of the better restaurants here in the North Market area. It was fairly crowded on Saturday, and the line does not move when they refill ingredients which took a while. Otherwise, the food is excellent but not the best Somalian food I have tried. We got the rice bowl (half regular half spicy rice) with mango chicken, as well as a few choice ingredients like cabbage and chickpeas, as well as an unlimited selection of cold ingredients like lettuce and red onions. We also got the garlic yogurt sauce which we did not end up using because the dish was flavorful enough. I used a little later on and it did cut on the spiciness, especially if you can't handle too much spice. We also got injera on the side which was fairly solid. The 2 small misses I noticed were the chicken was a bit too dry, and while portions are giant, they did skimp on a few ingredients like the chicken was not a full scoop and the cabbage was a few strands instead of a standard portion, given that you only get to choose 2 of the choice ingredients.

Humza K.

Yelp
Got the goat rice bowl. The meat was so tender and flavorful and the bowl was extremely filling. This was my first time trying Somali food, and as an Indian-American, everything felt new but in a familiar enough territory where I still felt at home. The service was fantastic too, as I had ordered online at the Columbus location but the owner personally called me and asked if the Dublin location was easier.

Shweta S.

Yelp
The hype is real! I visited this place since it came up in the recommendations for a 5* place near me and I can confirm that the hype is real! Probably the only place in the market with a queue during lunch time. I got the spicy rice with mango chicken, chickpeas and lentils with all the veggies. The rice and the chicken was so flavorful and the portion sizes are big! I also tried the chicken sambusa which was pretty good too! Definitely coming back again once I'm back in Columbus.

Angela G.

Yelp
Service was pleasant. They were very patient with my questions. Hubby got the rice bowl with goat and I got the rice bowl with sweet mango chicken and I did half regular and half spicy rice. The goat was so good I wished I had gotten it, rather than chicken. It was too sweet for me but the spicy rice did balance put the sweetness of the chicken. Oh my goodness make sure you get the Pineapple lemonade. It was DELICIOUS!!!

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Pros: service was quick and friendly Food was amazing! I had the mango chicken bowl with rice. The flavors were cohesive and delicious! Only thing I would have done differently would have been to add the garlic yogurt all over the bowl instead of to the side. The sauce just made it that much better and was a nice break from some of the heat (which was too much) of the mango chicken. I also had the mango juice. This was a sweet treat to complete my meal. I would definitely recommend Hoyo's!

Horace M.

Yelp
Just rolled in from NYC and was directed to The North Market and Hoyo's Kitchen was recommended. My bowl was made up with: Mango Chicken, chick peas, yellow rice & spinach & the Ginger Pineapple Lemonade! . DELICIOUS! They call it just a simple bowl. I call it THE SUPER BOWL!!!!

Matthew K.

Yelp
I have been extremely excited to try this restaurant out because people rave about it. Sadly, this was not my experience. I selected the goat, spinach and chickpea bowl. I was impressed by the chunks of goat he had placed in the bowl. When I started eating my meal, I realized that the chunks of goat were chunks of bone, cartilage and fat with barely any meat. I stopped back down and politely let them know. Without asking, they grabbed the bowl and threw more chunks of bone in the dish. When they handed it back to me, he made the snide comment that "goat has bones." How about making it right without the commentary? I understand goat has bones but when you are charging a premium for an entree, serve quality over quantity. I ordered goat meat, not goat bones and grizzle. The rest of the meal was average and I regret having not made a better choice given all of the options at the North Market. One and done.

Megan C.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot at the North Market! I had sadly never tried Somalian food before Hoyos- and was so impressed after my first time trying! It is a build your own bowl type place, and they have different rice/salad options, protein options, and bowl toppings. My favorite order is the white rice, mango chicken (mild/medium in heat level in my opinion), chickpeas, lentils, and all of the cold veggies. I also get the garlic sauce on top, and request the other two hot sauces on the side to use at my discretion- because they have a lot of heat! Hoyos typically always has a line because of how popular it is, but the line moves very fast. The employees are always very friendly and helpful if you have any questions. I recommend stopping by and eating your meal on the patio (if it's not freezing outside!). If it is, there is plenty of seating on the second floor of North Market.

Tien L.

Yelp
My favorite spot to eat while I was in Columbus for a conference. The sides were well-seasoned as well as my main dish. Dry generous portions. I had enough leftover for lunch the next day. Can't wait to try everything else on the menu next time I'm back in Columbus. Plenty of tables on the second floor of the building. There are tables outside as well.

Beth S.

Yelp
I got the vegetarian bowl. Holy cow it is so delicious! Perfect amount of seasoning, spice and crunch. We are upstairs overlooking the market. Neat atmosphere. Clean and not crowded.

Jmarc P.

Yelp
First time having Somali food. The woman serving food was super nice and gave suggestions. They were low on some items so I got a mixture. Some spicy rice, spicy chicken and mild chicken along with some veggies. Warning! I like spicy food but this is very spicy!! Good flavors but I think getting too many spicy items over powered the other flavors. I think if the spicy chicken was turned down a notch it would be excellent! Thank goodness I ordered their delicious homemade lemonade to wash it down! I used lots of napkins wiping sweat off my brow! I would order again but but less spicy!

Clare C.

Yelp
I think this is my favorite place in the north market! I always want it when I go! The bowl is about $14 but it is very tasty and filling! They give you a lot of food and the spices and ingredients they use make for a delicious meal. It is very customizable which is fun and nice so you can make it what you like. The workers are always friendly. Love it here and will be back!

Miracle R.

Yelp
Stopped by on my lunch break after being told about it for months by a friend. I will definitely be back. Great customer service and food. I had a bowl with the "yellow" rice sweet and spicy chicken and beef and some veggies. Also had a beef sambusa (so good I went back for a chicken, also good). And then I had a ginger lemonade. Really good. Decent price point. Really no commissions.

Keith W.

Yelp
The best recommendation from the guy working behind the counter. Said make me a dish you would eat...after wolfing it down i would definitely go eat with this guy. flavorful and a great combination. the vimto soda pop was good too! will be back again and again!

Kate C.

Yelp
We tried the watermelon and guava drink and it was super sweet but really good! The chicken suqaar with spicy rice was AMAZING! It had a fantastic kick, good textures and was hard for us to stop eating! Wow!!! Plus, the customer service was amazing too! They could not have been nicer with great suggestions too! We will definitely be back!

Simon G.

Yelp
So glad I stumbled on Hoyo's. They don't have the highest reviews and i almost passed by them. Now I know why they got 5 star ratings, sometimes stars are overrated but Hoyo's deserves every one of them 5 stars!! The Somali spice rice, beautiful color of cabbages, tomato, onions, cucumber, lettuce, lentils, chickpea, spinach were awesome. But the real star is the protein, the goat and mango chicken were unbelievable! The goat is a stand out, so tender and delicious! The mango chicken is a little spicy but not too bad.

Michael U.

Yelp
Hoyo's is the REAL deal. I had gone when they were just a small establishment on Cleveland Ave and now am a regular at their North Market location. The Safari Chicken is outstanding. Really generous portions. Colorful and FRESH. Love the Injera. The people are nice. Fresh, delicious, filling food that sticks to your ribs and HEALTHY!

Shammy S.

Yelp
Almost 5 stars! The food was absolutely amazing. Flavours were bursting from every dish served. Rice had stupendous flavour. Meats were marinated to perfection. Sauces were a wide profile of awesome that is sure to please many palettes. The staff found out it was my first time there so they gave me a mix of everything. The ONLY reason I docked 1 star is that the meat was tough and could have been cooked longer to achieve a more tender texture.

Trish T.

Yelp
The spouse is a long time eater and first time goat consumer, excellent he says! I echo the sentiment and was able to have a delicious meal and maintain my anti inflammatory and gluten and dairy free diet, which is almost always a challenge. Highly recommend, worth the stop.

Yelp
I'm so glad Hoyo's Kitchen made a home in the North Market. I seriously can't think of a better fit! I tried their food for the first time last week and holy cow, the fact that I live so close is either dangerous or extremely lucky. For starters, If you're a vegetarian like myself, this place is like striking gold. SO MANY delicious veggie options! Secondly, if you're new to Somalian cuisine, their setup makes it very easy for you to try new things. You also get a ton of food for the small price tag. I got a vegetarian bowl with a little of the spicy rice and a little of the regular. There's no doubt in my mind, I will likely do this every time I visit. I really liked going back and forth with each bite. With the vegetarian bowl, you get to try a little of everything... They offer cabbage, chickpeas, spinach, and lentils, plus unlimited cold toppings (tomato, cucumber, lettuce, etc.) My favorites were definitely the chickpeas and the lentils. The flavor was just so good, savory and rich. Reminded me of comfort food. This plate was super filling and I still can't get over how much food you get for ten bucks, the value is incredible. All around, I give 5-stars and the highest of fives to Hoyo's Kitchen. I can't wait to come back and try their veggie sambusa.

Yelp
This was my first time going to the north market and there were so many options to choose from. Hoyo's Kitchen caught my eye and was so delicious. They also had vegan options which was great. The food was so good and filling and there was little wait time after I ordered! Overall it was super good and I recommend it!

Yelp
We were visiting Columbus and were pleasantly surprised to see a decent amount of African cuisine options so we could try something new/different compared to the usual fare we get when eating out. We found Hoyo's on Yelp and saw it was in North Market Downtown, a public market, which we love since it allows you to try a bunch of different foods. Hoyo's was fantastic - we had the bowl with the spicy rice, beef suqaar, spinach, and chick pea along with all the toppings (spinach, tomatoes, onion, etc). We also asked for all 3 sauces on side. Bowl was a decent portion size with good ratios of meat to veggie/carbs. All the individual components of the bowl were deliciously seasoned and spiced - making a tasty bite when all put together. The beef was tender. Rice and vegetables were cooked perfectly. The yogurt sauce added a nice tangy, creaminess. The other 2 sauces added some additional heat. Enjoyed that the meal felt light too with all the vegetables.

Yelp
Over the weekend at the food drive, Hoyo's catered their food to feed the neighborhood. They gave out a couple hundred meals for those in need. Big respect to them! I couldn't resist stopping to chat when I saw them at the market. I've always wandered past them but today I stopped for a sambusa! I have never heard or seen one before and it reminded me of an empanada. I got chicken but they have beef and vegetarian/vegan option. It came with this sweet/spicy mango hot sauce that was the perfectly blend of hot and sweet. I can't wait to go back and get a bowl of the other things they have on the menu.

Yelp
Every time I walk around the North Market and think about what to eat, Hoyo's somehow ends up being chosen. But could you blame me? Literally everything I've tried on their menu is delicious! My favorite is the beef suqaar. The beef is always so tender and flavorful, it's a no-brainer. I also love that their food actually has a decent level of heat to it, unlike many other establishments serving up a disappointingly bland "hot". If you can handle at least a medium level of spice, I highly recommend their spicy rice as the base! You can always ask for half non-spicy and half spicy rice too. Their hot veggies are also full of flavor and cooked to perfection. You cannot go wrong with any, but my go-to are the chickpeas and spinach. All in all, Hoyo's Kitchen is super delicious and totally worth it even if the price seems a bit high for a typical "build your own"-style establishment. The portion sizes are humongous and can easily feed me for two meals. If only I lived closer... Food: 5/5 Price: 4.5/5 Overall: 4.75

Yelp
Holy WOW this is my new favorite spot at the North Market! Everything is SO delicious!! I got a vegetarian bowl that included a base (I chose the Somali basmati rice, which was vegan), all four veggie options (only 2 if you are eating a protein as well) and unlimited fresh toppings as well as your choice of three sauces! The portion was huge, and was definitely enough for two extremely filling meals. All of the veggie options were delicious, but my favorites would be the lentils and cabbage. No item was bland or over/under cooked, everything was separately seasoned and full of flavor. The mango habanero sauce I topped my bowl off with is definitely spicy! It's delicious but would definitely recommend eating it in moderation. I also got a veggie Sambusa which was full of mixed veggies, fried to perfection and had a slight kick to it as well. My friend got the mango chicken, which isn't listed on the protein menu but is supposed to be their hottest selling item. She raved about the food just as much as I did, and also said the pineapple ginger lemonade was bomb. Will definitely be going back next time I'm in town!!
