Hyphy Burger - Review - West Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The giant yellow Hyphy Bus (plastered with “this vehicle will gas-break-dip”) parked outside lets you know you’ve arrived at this West Oakland smashburger spot. Whether you were born here or just got off a plane at OAK, you’ll be fully consumed by the hyphy era theme the moment you enter the parking lot and hear Dru Down, The Jacka, and P-Lo blaring through the speakers. There are only two burgers on the menu, each with crispy edges we could easily find inside of a Lay’s bag, layered with globs of creamy (and appropriately named) “You Feel Me” sauce, and grilled onions on squishy potato buns. Round out any order with the only two other options on the menu: fries and a Fruity Pebbles or Oreo shake thick enough to defy gravity. You can go through the drive-thru or easily sit down inside—and for night owls, there are plans to extend hours until 1am. Food Rundown photo credit: Julia Chen Hyphy Burger You can’t go wrong with either of the two burgers. This one keeps things simple with grilled onions, american cheese, pickles, and “You Feel Me” sauce that packs a creamy punch—purists, go for this one. photo credit: Julia Chen Burnout Burger Just as good as the Hyphy Burger, but with two types of cheese (american and pepper jack), plus pepperoncinis and jalapeños for an added bite. Fries Thoroughly salted and crisp on the edges. No meal here is complete without them. photo credit: Julia Chen Oreo Shake Even if you’re not someone who goes feral for frozen desserts, this will turn you into a certified shake person." - Julia Chen

Google
This place was packed, so I don't feel bad taking the rating down a notch. The burger was OK. But not that great. There are way better burgers in the Bay. And it's not cheap enough to justify comparing it to budget places. The shake was also mid. It is nowhere near as good as Lana's. Not even the same league. Another huge gripe was that it took 25 min to get one burger. There are two burgers on the menu, that's it!! The rate at which they were made seemed really slow. With only two items, I'd expect efficient production. Peeking into the kitchen, it definitely seemed really disorganized. I'll give points for it being lively with lots of people, cool music, and chill employees. But the seating etc was poorly arranged, and no one was cleaning the tables. Overall, I guess it's OK to try, but there are way better burgers and shakes elsewhere.

Google
These Hyphy burgers are highly overrated. The meat was over cooked and tasteless. I prefer a nice juicy burger that has some beefy taste. The fries are not fresh and very ordinary. The place was busy and crowded and loud. Service was slow, but workers were pleasant. There were people just hanging out who were not eating or ordering. I probably won’t go back again. I hope the business thrives.

Google
Great place! The decor was cool, the staff was nice! The fries were well seasoned, the shake was fantastic; and the burgers were good too. My only complaint is that the burgers were really salty! Even so, they were super fresh and delicious regardless. Be sure to check them out!

Google
Lots of young people working there. Really good burger and fries. I get the burnout burger that has jalapeños... not too hot. Shakes are fun flavors. Enjoy the music and take s pic by the school bus 🚌

Google
My only disappointment was not having one of these restaurants where I live! I loved everything about this restaurant. I loved the 1950’s retro colors, the lights, and even the vibes! It looked like such a fun and happy place to work too. Not only was it amazing to look at, but that was also the best smash burger I had ever had. I wish I could go back all the time!

Google
Food was OUTSTANDING. The best smashburger I've had and the fries were served piping hot and WELL SEASONED. I got the fruity pebbles milkshake! That orange sauce that comes with the meal is VERY FLAVORFUL. Service was EXCELLENT. I had a question, and it was responded to PROFESSIONALLY and KINDLY. They were playing the BAY AREA SLAPPERS which added to feel of the business namesake "HYPHY BURGER". Bottom line is that the food SMACKS!

Google
Definitely the best smashburger you can find anywhere in the East Bay. Reminiscent of some of the better LA smashburger spots. Fries were super crispy…fantastic. Line was long but it moved fast. Parking lot gets alittle weird cause some people parked however they wanted, but won’t deter me from going back. Great addition to West Oakland and the East Bay burger scene.

Google
Hella lit. Two words to describe it: hella sloppy. Like really really sloppy - in the greatest way possible. Great taste and awesome prices, the salt and pepper fries are delicious too. Very happy that West Oakland is getting some food joints, and not just more weed dispensaries.

Yelp
Most of the time I hesitate to try new places. However, boy am I glad I stopped and tried Hyphy Burger. The menu is simple but don't let that fool you. What they do offer to their guest will take your taste buds on a magical roller coaster ride. I myself had the Hyphy Burger. The ingredients were generous and fresh. There was a line out the door when I got there. I took that as a good sign that Hyphy Burger must have something special going on. The fry's were seasoned perfectly, and the sauce they give you is amazing. They had an extensive shake menu that I am definitely going to try next time I come back. After this experience I will be back. The place is clean and very welcoming. I would give this place 10 stars if I could.

Yelp
Dear Hyphy Burger, Thank you for your service. I was looking for a no frills juicy burger and you made that dream a reality. Fries are solid too. Sincerely, Miss Crispy

Yelp
It took 10 minutes to get through the line to order, and about an hour to get the food. I'd say if you aren't in a hurry, it was worth the wait. It was super crowded and tough to get a table since everyone waiting for their food was sitting at the tables. Parking was crazy, people parked all over the place and in every direction. I'd give the burgers a 8.5 on the Smackin scale. Came with a sauce that was tasty. The shakes were good. I tried the Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the lucky charms. Overall was worth the drive and wait. The vibes are right up my alley for sure! "Yadadamean!?"

Yelp
Long lines, Drive thru not in service, customer service was good, burger was good except the bun ( not a fan of sweet brioche bread) sweet bun doesn't pair well with hamburger in my opinion but the burger was good. Fries weren't crispy and a little too salty Vanilla Milkshake had good flavor. Different various flavors of milkshake tho. They could keep up better with cleaning the tables and floors. They only have 2 options of burgers. Nothing for vegans or vegetarians Nothing for non red meat eaters No dessert No kids meals

Yelp
Outstanding burger and very reasonable prices. Authentic Oakland restaurant with tiny menu and big personality. Soft opening or Grand opening buzz check hours before visiting. In the afternoon today the place was very lively with eager patrons and cheer. Bright colors inside and everything perfectly new and clean. Its crisp. Either order from the register or the self order kiosk. Enter your phone number and get a text when ready. What made the burger special was that every single part was super quality. The bun, the meat and the cheese all stood out - no cost cutting at all. The cheese melted in a way only great quality cheese does and the meat was oh so flavorful and juicy. Some char around the edges in a way no mass produced burger at a chain could ever accomplish. The potato bun was different and such a step up from the normal stuff you get everywhere else. Fries were beautifully seasoned. I noticed some pepper flakes and what I liked best was the salt was done very lightly. A person can always add more easily. Fries were not piping hot but they were also not greasy - I notice greasy fries usually hold heat longer. A hyphy meal is $10.99 - burger with two patties, a drink and fries - last I checked I paid $20 for a big Mac meal five years ago in the city of SF and the quality - you can't even compare. I definitely sense this is passion driven - and although I'm not from bayareafoodz - I was drawn in having driven by the past months countless times - its impossible not to notice this beacon of light. The menu is tiny. Burgers, fries and shakes - that is it. And I like it - usually restaurants with endless items have freshness and quality issues - I think it may get expanded in the future - but I hope not too much. So many details are done right here. One example is the bag when it was handed to me. It was clean - fries were in their place unlike 5 guys with the greasy bag they hand you with fries all over the place. One small improvement might be to label the self order kiosk as such with above eye level writing. Uniquely Oakland and I'm here for it.

Yelp
The food here was amazing. I got the Burn-Out burger. It was packed with fresh vegi and jalapenos. The patty was perfet. Crispy on the outside and still juicy. It was packed and pretty loud when I got there. Not a lot of sitting room but they had great music playing.

Yelp
I heard about hyphy burger through social media and decided to come in and try it out. When I came into the restaurant I was greeted by staff members. I ordered a hyphy burger and fries. The wait time is very reasonable and efficient. The burger was cooked and seasoned very well. The bun was soft, cheese was melted and the taste of the burger was phenomenal. The fries were cooked and seasoned very well. The ambiance is customer friendly and the ambiance is very upbeat. This is a great place to go for a burger and fries.

Gabriella M.

Yelp
I'm so glad Hyphy Burger is here! I love how the ambiance captures the essence of Bay Area culture. There was music from the hyphy era playing inside and outside, and everything felt really well thought out- down to the colors of the facade, the decor, murals, and the menu. We went on a Saturday, and it was super busy. The staff moved the line really fast and were really nice. The food is GOOD!! I loved the shakes- I got a captain crunch shake, and my bf got the fruity pebbles shake. The end of my shake was crazy good, it was like eating a bowl of milkshake cereal. The burger was super tasty and greasy, but not mess up your shirt-greasy. The fries were also very seasoned and crispy. Everything was pure yola, 10/10! Hyphy burger will definitely be one of my regular spots.

Yelp
Delicious and extremely friendly. Went here on Valentine's day 2/14/2025. The restaurant is still in soft opening. Parking was easy in their lot. Waited a few minutes in line to order at the counter. Cashier was friendly and expedient. Found a table and sat down to wait. The energy and ambiance while waiting was pretty unique. Because of the soft opening, it seemed like there were a lot of folks that were a combination of the owners or friends of the owners. The owners were going around talking to all the tables waiting and explaining how they are brothers who grew up right nearby local to Oakland and how they are hiring local people, using local plants to decorate etc. They were extremely friendly. Since they were backed up with orders a bit with a ton of people visiting during this soft opening he was going around giving out what looked like free ice cream to some of the people who had been waiting longer too. The staff were all very friendly, considerate, and smiling. Some of them were literally dancing and posing with energy but not in a way that slowed the process down. Despite loud music and and a lot going on the person calling order numbers made a point to let people they were keeping track of mentally know they were order is coming soon and to thank them. The owners and staff were clearing all vibing well and happy with each other. The food itself was excellent. They were serving two delicious smashed burgers on the day I went. I had the hyphy burger which is in my photos This is a potato bun burger with American cheese and two smashed patties. It was so good I ordered a second one and waited for that to come out after my first. My partner got the Burnout burger which was similar but had pepperjack cheese, jalapeños, and pepperoncini. I liked both but preferred the hyphy burger, please keep this long term! The owner mentioned they are trying stuff out and the menu may change. We also got fries via the combo which is a great deal in my opinion. They were perfectly seasoned shoe string fries and nice and crispy but not burnt. I upgraded to large for a few bucks. In my first order they gave me a medium but I didn't realize it was only a medium. When I ordered the second time I got the large size and it was a solid huge portion. That time the meal was on the house because apparently a rapper whose name I didn't catch had paid for everyone's meals for the remainder of the time they were open. The fries come with a branded sauce I think "You feel me" or something which is delicious, not too sweet or heavy, to dip with. Give these folks a try I highly recommend it! I hope they keep all the great energy and family and friends working together that was so clear on the day I came! Quick edit to say the hours right now I believe close at 6pm as they are working to secure their second worker shift. I think they are aiming to eventually be open till 1 am, which is great for my mouth and dangerous for my health! Further edit 2/15/2015 went back again and it was delicious. Tried their Oreo milkshake which was thick and flavorful and enough for 2 people. Also tried the burnout burger again and now can't decide which is my favorite between that and hyphy both super delicious. This place crushed in n out and really feels like one of the best burgers in the area especially when you factor in price!

Yelp
I'm glad they're here. My kids like it. They have a menu like in - and -out. Truly just three items: burger, fries, milkshake. They have fountain sodas too. They're not at full hours - Wednesday to Sunday 10am(?) to 6pm. Because they're short staffed. :( thanks NIMBYs for making housing too expensive and FU to everyone who tries to shut down immigration.
google avatar

Ricky A.

Yelp
I only had the fries and they were great, seasoned to perfection!! The service was super fast and the employees was very friendly. The ambiance was crack'n! If you from Oakland you know the vibes I'm talking about!! The color scheme of the establishment screams excitement! I'm looking forward to this place being a staple in the community for years to come!! Not to mention it's BLACK OWNED!! I'll be back soon!!

Yelp
Went to Hyphy's twice since they opened. Got their burnt ends burger and fries. Food were filling and had good flavor. They have an extensive list of shakes, which I haven't tried but the shakes do look good. Will go back again in the future. The workers are nice and this place gets busy around lunch time. Make sure to either go before or after the lunch rush if you don't want to wait. Today is Valentine's Day and Hyphy was giving out roses to all the ladies. Kuddos to Hyphy burger! Love the sweet touch.

Dylan B.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. Food was very delicious and despite being very busy they were able to get orders out relatively quickly. Honestly just a really dope spot I will be coming back to. Edit: changing it to a 5 star review as I've been back and they were just as good as the first time.

J.J. A.

Yelp
Pretty dope spot! Food was good, tasted fresh and was good quality. They had a self-service kiosk as well as a normal cashier taking your order which is great in case you wanna get in and out. Menu is simple but that is to me a good thing. No need to over saturate your menu. If you have a few items you can focus on quality over quantity. I'd def recommend this place and will be back again.

Yelp
I don't eat much meat but I did go here to show some love. The food was amazing. My first Smash Burger. I will go again soon.

Carl F.

Yelp
The burgers are delicious the patties were very well seasoned the fries are delicious they have salt and pepper on them which might not be for everyone but I loved it I would definitely come back

Tamara E.

Yelp
Today I was order #116 I ordered Two Hyphy burger meals one with a shake one with a coke. Not a long wait at all do not be discouraged by the line . Food fries we good sauce was cool I added lettuce and tomatoes to my burger but the forgot to put it on there I didn't go back still have room for improvement I rather go there than go to Mac Donald Good Job fellas oh my cola was flat but hey ima support The music inside is too loud 6 out of 10

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Food pretty , long line but moves really fast , nice staff . Fruity pebble shake 1000/10
google avatar

Riana S.

Yelp
Been wanting to try them ever since they opened, I heard nothing but good reviews. However, I pulled up 3x to try them and every time they were closed, when it says their hours are 10:30am-1am or 3am. So at this point idk about coming here again to try them.
google avatar

Unknown T.

Yelp
Bummer. Went there to eat at 4:30 today / Sunday and they're not even open. Why aren't you keeping hours? Heading up to Dave's Hot Chicken. Not cool for people to drive there and posted hours not be accurate. UPDATE: Hours are different on Yelp versus Google. DEAR BUSINESS OWNER: I'd correct this ASAP - creating bad feelings for your new biz.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Hours are incorrect and not posted here disappointed drove over a half hour for nothing
google avatar

Sam R.

Yelp
Burger was below average. Price was high for quality speed and service. Also ripping off another local businesses whole aesthetic. I wouldn't be surprised if they got sued. Overall I'll probably try it again when they've been open for a while but I think the spot lacks originality and food and service so far is subpar

Max P.

Yelp
Kinda meh just a basic smash burger and they are trying to look like Hotboys down the street.

Coby B.

Yelp
They need to update there hours of operation ive been there 5 times and everytime they said they were open they were closed

John F.

Yelp
This place has so much potential, best smash burgers around, simple menu, the service is awesome. Only thing is it seems very very disorganized, also the blasting music makes it very hard to hear your number. I hope they make the small corrections and flourish!
google avatar

samer a.

Yelp
This place is straight amazing service hopefully will get faster but worth wait we need one in concord area soon
google avatar

Alise O.

Yelp
Pretty long wait but wonderful vibe and the grub was well worth the wait! Looking forward to trying the milkshakes that looked amazeballs! Employees super nice and working their butts off!

Jordan A.

Yelp
Copying businesses all around the bay and beyond. They copied hot boys aesthetic, copied many smash burger spots which are already successful like smack burgers. They were even asking on Instagram for people who know how to make five guys fries. Burger was whatever and not a real smash burger. Be creative and stop copying other businesses.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! I grabbed a hyphy burger for takeout on a Thursday early afternoon today and for $6.99 the double smashburger was a tasty, satisfying, steal of a meal. The staff were hella welcoming and friendly, and the fries were really well-seasoned. Super simple menu, but very well executed so far. In the long run, maybe consider a vegan smashburger option, but I understand that separating griddles is complicated. Positive vibes and hustle all day. It was a really great experience, and I will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Good food! Great burger ! Very flavorful . Fun location ! The ambiance is very nice. This is a good date place !

Natasha N.

Yelp
Loveee this place. The wait is long since it's new and delicious. Will be back, hopefully the lines have died down. Hours aren't clear on all websites but that doesn't change the fact that the food is good!

Alex E.

Yelp
Good food but the service was lacking because it was so busy I think they need a better system to coordinate more better but the food was good none the less, the milk shake was tasting like too much milk and no flavoring because the milk tastes was really strong but my burger was slamminnnnnnnn
google avatar

Truth W.

Yelp
The food was well seasoned and reasonably priced. I loved the fruity pebbles shake. The music was good and the staff were very kind.

Emmanuel J.

Yelp
Burger is really really good. Would be nice if they had a number to call and the hours have been off lately, but overall... I highly recommend. Super dope what they doing in the community

Taylor W.

Yelp
Drove by on a Sunday at 11am. Not open as stated on Google and Yelp. No phone number either. Ended up going to another burger joint down the street

Lauren T.

Yelp
Haven't tried it since I don't eat red meat. Hoping they get a chicken/turkey option eventually. *HINT HINT* Just here to support the guys. The bay love yall, keep it going.

Chet U.

Yelp
Overall it's not bad. I just personally am not a fan of shoestring fries, the milkshake is more of a McFlurry so I couldn't drink it, the burger is a burger but I hear I probably should've got the burnout burger. Will try again for a heat check lol

Jacob M.

Yelp
When I showed up the line was out the door but even with one cashier it only took about 5 minutes for me to place my order. I ordered the burnout burger, fries, and lucky charms shake. Burger: FIRE. Very well seasoned and juicy. I'd even say the best burger in Oakland 10/10. Fries: well seasoned and fresh 8/10. The lucky charms shake wasn't really for me but my lady loved it! The combo was like 12-13 dollars and I was in and out in less than 20 minutes. Definitely recommend

Bilal E.

Yelp
Incredible burgers! Fries were great and their milkshakes are perfect. Will for sure be coming back. Service was great food was even better and everything came out pretty quick. I also loved the atmosphere, the workers were kind, the music was good, and again the food was incredible

George B.

Yelp
Great burger. so happy this place is opened in the food desert great decor, delicious burgers, well done, mate.

Laura H.

Yelp
Amazing food, great atmosphere, friendly service - so happy to have you in the neighborhood! Will be coming back for more!

Shawn W.

Yelp
Poor customer service constantly closed when it shows their hours are open on top of that they do not care about the customers needs or well-being

Owen A.

Yelp
shit smacks, customer service needs a little help but hey its fast food what do u want

mena r.

Yelp
Love this place, food amazing, lovely vibes, stellar service. Also great to have new spot in the neighborhood!

Becks P.

Yelp
Great! New business and wanna support with a good review. People need to be more understanding when business is just opening. Food is great and the environment is very cool.

Constance H.

Yelp
They gave me the wrong order but my children said it was ok I asked for hamburger with grilled onions lite lettuce and tomatoes no pickles and vanilla milk shake and fries. The fries were good the burger had pickles cheese no tomatoes and no grilled onions the shake was a cinnamon toast crunch shake and I asked for vanilla they mess my whole order up I believe that they gave me the wrong order
