How to Visit Rome Like a Local

"Specializes in maritozzi, with varieties that range from classic buns to more creative options. Stays open late, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for an evening maritozzo." - The MICHELIN Guide

The Best Italian Bakeries for Late-Night Pastries in Rome | Eater

"A small, decades-old spot (in operation since 1960) that has become synonymous with Rome’s late-night pastry culture, famed for its softball-sized maritozzo — a brioche bun split and spooned full of an enormous dollop of fresh cream — plus pistachio and chocolate variations. Open 24/7 but busiest from about 11 p.m. onward, the tiny bar spills onto a street corner where Romans queue, chat, and eat standing at two outdoor tables; service is brisk (pay before you order) and handled by a compact team — an order-taker who calls orders to the pastry chef who cleaves buns and fills them by hand. It’s a family-and-generation ritual as much as a bakery stop, prized for both its comforting, messy pleasure and its reliable coffee and other sweet treats." - Lara Gilmour

Google
Typical Italian place for a coffee and some pastries (or, as they call it - breakfast 😁), most of them are sweet, but a few savory options are also available. Quick service, no English, but we understood each other quite nicely 👍🏻 a few tables outside, to enjoy the sun while having a coffee and a bite (no nice views, as it's a neighbourhood cafe, but it's ok)

Google
Loved this old-school pastry shop, famous obviously for the maritozzaro, but I got a Pasticciotto, filled with vanilla custard cream, and it is the best thing I have eaten since arriving in Rome. I’m going to hop on the 8 tram tomorrow and buy more.

I was here on a Saturday night at around 10 and was surprised to see freshly baked items coming from the kitchen. Then looking at their timings, realised they are open 24h except on Mondays or so. Everything that we brought was delicious.

Google
It tasted like plain cream in a sandwich. A dessert with no special qualities. If it’s on your way, you can give it a try, but it’s definitely not worth a special trip.

Google
Great pastries, we have tried couple of things in the past few days and I can’t say what’s the favourite as they are all great . The place is open 24 hours too. Highly recommended to try

Google
The owner was lovely - but I heard so many amazing things about the maritozzaro that I was quite let down. It’s just bread with cream inside. The simplest you can imagine. Wasn’t bad per se, just, curb your expectations..

Yelp
Yes, I was That American who's extremely fixated on Maritozzi. I was fixated on these little bready, cream-filled delights (that, for some ungodly reason, we don't do in the States). I tried them at a few cafes around Rome, and while all were good, Il Maritozzaro's was my favorite. The bread is airy and lightly sweet. The cream is just perfectly fluffy and rich. Pairing it with a cup of espresso made for a perfect breakfast. The staff were also friendly and helpful. We took a box of maritozzi to go and while we were outside figuring out the best route home, the baker came out to try to communicate to us it was too hot for the maritozzi and that we'd immediately need to put the box in a fridge as soon as we could. It was clear he cared about the quality of goods we were getting, and that's always appreciated.

Yelp
On a trip to Rome I became obsessed with Maritozzi and I learned this bakery had the best Maritozzi in all of Roma. So I had to go. We took a bus and found the bakery. The pastry was fantastico. Light, soft sweet and delicious. Definitely the best in all of Rome.

Yelp
I was just walking around in Testaccio, and I saw a bunch of people eating some cream pastry outside at 10 PM. It was well after dinner, and I was surprised that this place was still open and attracting business. The first time I passed by, I didn't think much of it. The second time, I decided to try it out. We went inside to find several pastries and donuts. I think you might have to pay first with the cashier, but we went straight to the pastries because they were so beautifully displayed behind the glass windows. It was kind of tough not being able to communicate because they don't speak much English. The maritozzo is better than I expected! The cream is so fresh. I got another one to eat the next morning!

Yelp
Quaint, quick service, great pastries and espresso. Enjoyed a caffe latte and croissant with Nutella as well

Yelp
Maritozzi are pastry treats characteristic of Roman cuisine. They are soft and delicious sweet rolls, similar to brioche, stuffed with whipped cream, served for breakfast throughout Rome. At Il Maritozzaro, they are served around the clock. This place is a tradition in Trastevere, open since 1960. It is not unusual to find large numbers of people enjoying maritozzi here late into the night.

Yelp
This place was a two min walk from my hotel. I decided to give it a shot and it was literally the best thing I ate that day. Their whipped crème filled buns are to die for!! I was so skeptical before trying it, but when I did it melted in my mouth. And the woman who works there was super patient with me since I couldn't speak Italian. Don't waste your time going to the many overpraised bakeries in the city center; go here instead.

Yelp
On an unassuming corner in Trastevere one finds Il Maritozzaro, and since 1960 this independently-owned Bar has dedicated itself to Rome's signature Pastry while maintaining nondescript hours that usually find the place open from 06h30 until past midnight every day but Monday. Not far from Stazione Trastevere, a no-frills appearance in a residential neighborhood assuring minimal tourist traffic, it is upon entry that Il Maritozzaro reveals itself as little more than 200 square meters, a lone table seeing most guests belly to the Bar downing Espresso shots before departing with a Pastry in their hand. Apparently hopping late-night, but also with a steady stream of traffic en route to work, most guests predictably select Il Maritozzaro's eponymous Pastry, the split-top Bun that was once the only sweet allowed during Lent nearly over-loaded with Cream just as it has been since the Middle ages. Moving beyond Maritozzi, its subtle sweetness seeing the substantial portion eat lighter than one might expect, those seeking something more sugary should consider a Peach-shaped Biscuit sandwiching Custard while an unlabeled asterisk with Raisins and glaze shows Il Maritozzaro to also perform well with laminated Pastry. Not about to forgo Sfogliatelle, tight layers shattering to the tooth before yielding citrusy Ricotta, a rounded Torta Caprese finished the morning with a slightly dry crumb but plenty of Cocoa suspended in the bittersweet matrix.

Yelp
This is the best pastry shop! The maritozzaro was so delicious and all the other pastries were yummy too. We went here every day we were in Rome once we found it and even got some to take to the airport to have before our flight back home.

Yelp
Take the advice of Conchita's review! You must have the pastry called the maritozzi! We came here while we were on vacation and saw her review and decided to give it a try! The old man who was working spoke almost no English but was happy that we made the effort to try and communicate with him in Italian. He was very sweet and insisted we both have a maritozzi. We were not disappointed! It's hard to describe but do yourself the favor and come by this little shop, you won't regret it!

Yelp
I went here every morning during my visit. Just wonderful! Very friendly and kind to me, even though I had no idea what I was doing or saying

Yelp
.... Voi sognate .... Io sono al terzo ! ;)

Yelp
WOW!!!! If you are in Roma, you MUST try the pastry here called, Maritozzi. It is beyond amazing!!! My family and I stumbled upon this place and when the maritozzi caught my eye through the glass display, I asked the gentleman in Italian what it was. He chuckled, abruptly grabbed a piece of pastry paper, grabbed the maratozzi, handed it to me (in my face) and said in Italian, "Bite it!" His voice was demanding and his confidence was so evident that I just had to obey. And then there was AWE!!!! Completely amazing. I had never had anything like it. Had he charged me 100 euros for it, I probably would have paid it and ordered another one to go. Luckily, it was only about 1.50. Take my word for it, you must try it. It will be one of the best pastries you ever had! P.S. I did dare ask where the recipe came from and the gentleman in charge of the register (the owner of this gem), explained that the recipe was his father's. He shared a picture of he and his twin brother in his father's arms as infants. That just made this place that much more special for my family and I. Viva il maritozzi!!!
