"When owners Sean Murray Smith and Nada Abou Younes converted Mile End restaurant Les Deux Singes de Montarvie into Île Flottante, people stopped and noticed. Murray serves up three versions of a vegetable-focused tasting menu at either $45, $65 or $85, depending on the number of services — but don’t expect boring vegetarian standards here, as he showcases produce in new and exciting contexts." - Carla Bragagnolo, Daniel Bromberg

I cannot recommend this place enough ! As a vegan it is hard to find this kind of culinary experience. The chef and his whole team really went above and beyond to make this night special. The service was great, the knowledge of the staff was great and the food was to die for. The other couple with us were eating the original 6 course menu with meat and they were also extremely pleased. I will definitely come back!

This place offered an unpretentious dining environment for prix fixe, the menu is creative and you can tell thoughts and experiments happened behind the scene. My favorite was the homemade bread in P4, it was crispy on the outside, creamy and chewy on the inside, out of this world. Would go back for every menu change.

Wow. Just wow. Each dish is a unique experience of flavour. The conversation stops and you just reflect on what’s happening to your flavor palette. Bring your spouse here, or anyone you want to impress for a special occasion. This place does not disappoint. Also, shout out to the somelier for her awesome energy and great wine recommendations. A 5 star experience!

I wish I could give more than 5 stars! I've been going down the Canada's Best 100 list and I'm surprised this place isn't ranked higher. It's by far the best restaurant I've visited in Montreal and the tasting menu won't even break the bank. Across all 7 dishes, every single dish was a banger. You can see the creativity and finasse of the kitchen shining through the unique use of ingredients and beautiful presentation. It was a good split between salty and sweet dishes. My favourites were the halibut starter with chlorophyll foam and the fried rice. The latter didn't even look like a fried rice dish until you uncover the pork cubes and rice grains below the rice crackers - such clever cooking! So much flavour and all the ingredients resonated well together. Even my least favourite dish, the salad, had a surprise twist at the bottom of the bowl with the caramelized onions and celtuse (which I've never tried before!). It wasn't that bad and I only liked it less because I don't prefer raw vegetables. The desserts were a little on the sweet side, but hey, that's what desserts are! The mango/passion fruit ice cream dish with the flower was just stunning in terms of visuals and taste. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the impeccable service of the servers that evening. They spoke perfect English and were very friendly and approachable. They also seemed genuinely appreciative of feedback. Thank you for such a wonderful experience and we look forward to coming back.

Service was outstanding. Fiona is so professional and my husband enjoyed her recommendation for the wine a lot. Alice made us feel so welcome. Overall service was the best part. Food is so so. A lot of ingredients in the dish that didn’t speak with each other.

Google
The food was incredible and the staff was super friendly. The somelliere was clearly very passionate about wine which made the pairing delicious. The cocktail options were also very creative and gave a beautiful start to the evening. You could see there was a lot of care around the conception of the menu, making it very interesting without being presumptuous. One of my favorite restaurant experiences I've had in Montreal.

Google
We had another fantastic dining experience! Each course had amazing flavors which all came together presented with the utmost attention to details. The sommelier, Fiona is fantastic. Her passion for wine is only rivalled by her fantastic palette and ability to suggest wines according to the patrons preferences. The rest of the team is just as pleasant and an integral part of what makes this one of my favorite dining destinations.

Visited Ile flotante for my birthday and I was very disappointed. I was excited to try their 6 course menu as I have seen great reviews about it. The first course seafood soup with their homemade bread was DELICIOUS, I was in love on how good it was and set the bar really high for the other courses. Sadly it went downhill after that, the mushroom dumplings had almost no flavour at all, the rice/mayo/chicken/egg dish was too creamy and no special flavour at all I got tired of eating after 2 spoons, the duck was very heavy mostly after having a very heavy dish before and last the beef was another heavy plate and nothing in-between to cleanse the palate. The dessert was average, yes very well presented but a very simple vanilla cake that could almost taste like the costco one. The place itself is beautiful, however it took 50min wait to get our dessert, I don’t think they have the staff to have so many tables. We weren’t the only table waiting for that long for a dessert. The table beside us arrived an hour and a half after us and they finished their 5 course and were waiting at the same time for dessert than us. It took us 3 hours and half for the whole thing. We did not even had that many drinks that kept us there at one point we had nothing else to talk about ut was awkward, we were literally waiting on our phones. Kudos for the staff that kept their smiles and trying to make it work, they gave us off 2 of the cocktails we ordered but still the price doesn’t match the wait or the quality honestly not worth it at all.

Yelp
I've eaten numerous times at Ile Flottante. The food is always creative in both flavor and texture, the service is impeccable, and the atmosphere is full of friendly enjoyment. I used to go on corporate junkets, to Europe, South America, etc. Had allegedly superb three star Michelin meals in many places. None were as tasty and fun to eat as Ile Flottante.

Yelp
Went here for a birthday dinner while in Montreal. Had a late reservation, 930p, but we were seated right away and the restaurant was full. We started with cocktails, which are designed daily, I believe. This was a nice citrus forward cocktail, very refreshing. Dinner was a seven course pre-fixe menu. It started off with a plate where you basically craft your own mini sandwiches, and they were delicious. Second course was a scallop dish, with the scallops having a nice sear on them. This dish was a tartare with crispy nori blending different textures perfectly. The fourth dish was a vegetable dish with white asparagus. The fifth dish was the main entre course: duck with a foie gras sauce. The duck had a lot of connective tissue, which was unfortunate, but with the foie gras sauce, it was very good. The sixth dish was a pre-dessert dessert, while the seventh, and final dish, was a coconut ice cream with chocolate and blueberries. Very nice. Overall, a great experience. Staff was friendly and chatty, food was excellent outside of the connective tissue on the duck. The one downside was the meal took four hours to get through, which was very long. Not sure if every service takes that long, but overall a great experience.

Yelp
TL;DR - if you can score the reservation go! Food creativity is what sets Île Flottante apart. Service is really good, but things slowed down after the savory courses. Ambiance and location might not be bougee enough, but it's not $200pp either. Did not do the wine pairing at $70, but thought the wines by the glass at $15 each fit the bill without breaking the bank. They are doing their 'Spring Menu', my fav was the sunchoke which is their take on poutine, mushrooms, and truffle. The miss (for me) was the platte cleansing course of toasted coconut ice cream with asparagus and strawberries. While I could nitpick about textures, acid, and salt, overall we're in Michelin star territory here. Best value for composed multi-course / pre-fixe in Montreal!

Yelp
I loved my dinner here. There is NO menu. You are served what the chef bought from the market that day. Love this concept. The plates were inventive, atypical of most restaurants i visited. I loved it so I will be making IF one of my first stops next time I'm in the city. The wines served were young and paired with the plates well. I like that she was bold enough to pick wines with a tart dimension to meld or contrast flavors of verbena, spruce, lime, mint, lychee in the plates presented during my dinner. SUPER Nice. I also enjoyed that most of the plates treated my taste buds to a kaleidoscope of vegetable flavors --that is becoming more and more appealing to me. I don't want a large piece of meat to enjoy my dinner so Ile is my kind of dining. Loved the informal, fun and hip vibe to the staff also. Loved IF. Coming back. End of Yelp.

Yelp
My friend and I came recently to Ile Flottante for a celebratory meal. I picked this spot because it's rare to find a restaurant that offers a pre-fixe tasting menu that can accommodate different dietary restrictions, as my friend is vegetarian, while I can eat anything. I made reservations 2.5 weeks beforehand for a Wednesday dinner at 6:30. I was hoping that because I made my reservations early, we would have a better table, but we were seated at one of the few two person tables while I noticed a lot of other couples were seated at a much spacier 4 person table. Upon arrival, our server let us know that they are currently offering a 7 course pre-fixe menu for $90 pp, with an optional wine pairing available for $60 pp. We decided to do both and informed our server about my friend being vegetarian. Before going into the details of the meal, I want to write some thoughts on the overall experience. We enjoyed the food for the most part, except for 1-2 courses, and thought everything was very creative. However, I was hoping for more meat. For $90 pp, I would've wanted at least 2-3 courses where meat was the main, and we only got one with tuna. I kept waiting for a big meat dish with beef, duck, etc., and was disappointed when it never came. Service was phenomenal, as you'd expect from a restaurant like this. Our server was French and didn't know how to say everything in English sometimes when describing a course, and he would always check with the kitchen and let us know later. Our wine glasses were kept refilled if one course was taking longer to arrive and we finished the wine before the course was served. You don't feel rushed at all; we were here for about 3.5 hours total from start to finish as we were eating and drinking at a leisurely pace and didn't leave until close to 10. I did see some other tables around us going at a faster pace since they weren't doing the wine pairing. Because it's wintertime, our server mentioned the menu is very vegetable focused (not sure if that makes sense though??). Here's what we had: 1st course - pho with mushroom broth and beef tenderloin and king oyster mushrooms. I thought the broth flavor was just okay, but I really enjoyed the slices of mostly raw beef, as they were very tender 2nd course - bread with butter and some honey underneath. We both enjoyed the bread with the contrast between the savory butter and cheese inside and the honey on the outside. 3rd course - dual cauliflower dish. One dish had a buttermilk milk and sour cream-based sauce with cauliflower and caviar, while the the other was a blini with caviar, smoked fish, and cauliflower on top. We enjoyed both dishes. 4th course - cauliflower ice cream with caviar, served on top of ice to keep it cold. We both thought this was a weird dish and was our least favorite of the night. The cauliflower flavor was very strong, but it felt quite odd to eat it in ice cream form... 5th course - tuna tataki with brown rice wrapped in cabbage, served with turnips and a ginger sauce. This was my favorite course of the whole meal, as the tuna was fantastic with the sesame crust and went well with the rice and turnips. 6th course - salad with cabbage, beets, and endive. The beets went really well with the cabbage and the salted ricotta along the bottom. 7th course - dessert was raspberry ice cream with chocolate and fig bites as well as pepper jelly. I was initially very hesitant about the dessert as multiple items had pepper, but luckily I didn't taste much of it except as an aftertaste (though that was weird). Overall, we enjoyed the meal except for the cauliflower ice cream course.

Yelp
A few years ago my wife and I had one of the most memorable food experiences of our lives at Ile Flottante, so we made a special trip back up for my birthday, and they actually exceeded my already very high expectations. The food was incredible, the wine pairings were inspired, unusual, and perfectly complimented the complex and deep flavors of each beautiful course. I am baffled that this place doesn't have any Michelin stars yet, but I am sure they will soon.

Carol S.

Yelp
Dined here several weeks ago. The service was excellent. The food was fine, not mind-blowing as I had hoped for, but it IS only $90pp for the 8 course tasting menu. I was expecting more meat and was pretty disappointed. My favorite dish was the 1st dish of veggies in a light green sauce. The fish was cooked well but a bit bland. The lobster salad was overpowered by the heavy, tart dressing. The fruit dessert was tart as well, and these two unbalanced dishes were my least favorite. DO NOT get the $60pp wine pairing. It was mostly crap wines, and I should've realized that given the inexpensive price tag. I know they need to make some kind of profit, but we just wasted most of it. Please change the wine selection!

Yelp
Went there for my bday dinner with a friend of mine. Reservation was at 10pm so quite late and I had smacked before going to was a bit full by dessert time. Nevertheless, food was amazing! I had been previously when it was called Trois Singes de Montavie and it was equally delicious (except cheaper). The dishes are small but still quite filling by the end of dinner. I must say that the homemade oatmeal bread was my favourite...a hint sweet, soft and warm. Still drooling thinking about it. The restaurant uses seasonal ingredients which is nice and fresh. There was a fish made with cucumber that I also enjoyed very much considering the fact that I am not a fan of cucumbers. Must say that the service was also great. My napping was folded for me every time I came back from the bathroom. They probably don't do it as often during the earlier services since there must be a lot more people but thought it was attentive from the staff. Wine pairing was also very affordable compared to other restaurants with tasting menu offerings. Wine pairing was $60 vs $80+ at other restaurants so definitely a must! Thé plates are beautifully decorated. They looked as good as they tasted! I would definitely go back!

Yelp
Saw this restaurant on an Eater list and decided to give it a try. SO glad we did, because it was honestly the best meal I've ever eaten. The chefs tasting menu had seven amazing courses, each one filled with flavor and seasonal ingredients. As with most tasting menus, I would recommend that you're not a picky eater if you opt to eat here. That being said, they can accommodate certain dietary restrictions here for you. I understand the menu changes with the seasons, and it makes me wish I lived closer so I could try it each time. We had flounder ceviche served in hollowed out kohlrabi, an amazing veggie/seafood take on Italian wedding soup, a little salad with fresh lobster meat in it, an incredible mushroom dish, a giant artichoke ravioli, a "pre-dessert" palate cleanser with lemon, yogurt, cuke & Thai basil (I know it sounds like a weird mixture, but it was so so tasty), and the chef's take on blueberry pancakes with ice cream. All of it very veggie forward, but not lacking one bit of flavor - each dish was bursting with color and exquisite taste. They also had three flavored cocktail specials, two of which we tried: strawberry/celery (which was perfectly smoked and flavors were balanced so well), cucumber, and jalapeño. Service was outstanding - they pace it just right and each server is knowledgeable (in both English and French) on the dish being placed in front of you. A quiet restaurant in a cute Montreal neighborhood, I would wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a food experience.

Yelp
Wonderful evening at Île Flottante. The service was attentive and well-matched to our mood, and the vegetarian fare surprising, creative, and a pleasure for the senses. I loved that they offered a plant-based option as well. I would highly recommend this cozy and unpretentious resto in the heart of the Mile End.

Suzanne T.

Yelp
Spectacular food!! Beyond!! Tasting menu on par with The French Laundry and Lazy Bear. The setting is unassuming but don't let that fool you - the dishes are next level! Each member of the staff was knowledgeable and very present. We added the wine pairing and the sommelier would describe each wine in detail - top notch. The restaurant offers both vegetarian and vegan options - which is so welcome and appreciated. I had vegan and my dinner partner had the regular menu. Each and every single course was delicious, inventive, surprising and unique. Thank you Chef Sean and your wonderful team. Simply a must visit when in Montreal. Do not miss.

Nadav F.

Yelp
Place is incredible. Had a lovely evening. Presentation is like art, food is delicious, and the place isn't stuffy and pretentious like some of the other fine dining establishments with tasting menus. Thank you for a lovely evening. Highly recommend

H M.

Yelp
Bottom Line: Loved the food, hated the restaurant The food is fantastic without being precious, pretentious, or fuzzy. This place would be a good take-out restaurant. Here's the problem: 1. The atmosphere is horrendous. It reminds me of Applebee's that ghastly US suburban chain restaurant with the throbbing music and ubiquitous TVs. Ile Flottante is so loud it is impossible to have a conversation in the place. That is compounded by the next problem: 2. The pacing of the meal is glacial. When we entered the restaurant, the waitress was 23 years old. By the time we left, she was 75. People are sitting there forever waiting for the next (of a 6 course meal) to come out. Unfortunately, as presently constituted, this restaurant will never make it despite having great food. By my calculaton, the place is loosing $15K per month because they cannot get to break-even--their check sizes are too small and they don't turn tables, perhaps by design. It is a shame. They are so close, but just have not figured out the right formulation to have a successfull and profitable restaurant.

Shobha N.

Yelp
The most amazing tasting menu with stunning wine pairing and such a personal waitstaff!

Lila L.

Yelp
Just a truly atrocious experience. If your food isn't particularly inventive, why are you being cagey? Is it because you're worried no one will come eat at your mediocre restaurant if there's no manufactured excitement? Why don't you show a menu on the website? Is that how you lure people to come. Not worth anyone's time. The service was also horrendous...had a reservation and they made us wait for 30 min before we were seated.

Shari A.

Yelp
Superb. This neighborhood place is a total gem.... the most sophisticated food served in a rustic sort of minimalist chic atmosphere with service that is simply perfect. We ventured here based on our research of the foodie sites for Montreal and they were spot on. The beauty of the tasting options is that each person can select a different number of courses so for example, I had a 3 course menu that dovetailed nicely with my husband's 5 courses and I was able to taste his dishes. They also permitted us to do one wine pairing and they split each pour between two glasses which is just so nice for people like us who really enjoy pairings but cannot consume so much wine in one sitting. They prepare daily cocktail specials which are recited by the servers and our choices were sublime. Herbaceous, gorgeous, and they went down so easy! You can really tell that the entire staff is a family affair with each person helping the other out and the dishes are described and delivered on point by a different person for each course. Somehow it doesn't feel disjointed but rather completely in sync. The female owner is the front of the house and the male owner is in the kitchen. He also does all of his own desserts. The menu highlights vegetables like I've never seen done. This makes it perfect for any type of eater. We had one fish dish which was lovely, but the vegetable are the real stars here. The presentation is also art on a plate. The tasting comes with dessert and even after all of that, they are able to convince you to order the signature ile flottante which is changed up often with the chefs own twist. Outstanding. I can't wait to come back the next time we are in town. It's a bummer we are 5 hours away or I would be a regular here! Don't miss this superstar.

Andrew L.

Yelp
Do wish I could've recorded the wait staff's detailed description of each dish--since the words themselves are inviting and delicious. We decided to get a bottle instead of the wine pairing just to make things simple. Each dish was marvelous. You won't come out disgustingly full and I read people's complaint about the lack of protein. This is not a hamburger or steak joint, go elsewhere for that and give the planet a break. The restaurant very simply allow one to see how we can eat differently w/o so much MEAT and still be able to experience a transcendent meal. The neighborhood is still a lively real community of residents and small businesses. Definitely worth a try. There were complaints about the wine list. While it's highlighting particular places that are outside of the traditionally well known wine regions, this hopefully allow the restaurant to retain a lower accessible wine price range. The bottle we got was not marked up in the usual 3x the price but only 2x. I appreciate that effort. Service was impeccable and food terrific. 7 course tasting menu around $100 per person

Josh S.

Yelp
While the food was very unique and something's were amazing, the service was ridiculously slow. Our reservation was at 630 and we didn't get our first course (of 5) until 715. We actually left before desert because at 915 we still had just received course 4. They did comp us a couple of drinks but 4 courses over almost 3 hours is way too slow.

Jessica E.

Yelp
I was completely amazed by the menu for the night. The menu was thoughtfully put together and very creative. Dishes consisted of mostly vegetables, fruits, and some seafood and every bite was bursting of flavors and textures. Never have I thought food can taste this good without any meat. It was all very appealing to look at and the service was attentive. This place is one of my top favorites on the list. A must try!

Laura R.

Yelp
A true gastronomic experience! My husband and I each partook in the 7 course tasting menu, and we were wowed by the nuanced flavours and inventive dishes. Each dish is a surprise, as nothing is posted on the menu. It adds to the charm and mystique. The restaurant is located almost adjacent to the famous St Viateur bagel shop, and it's in a historic stretch of the city. It's an apt spot for them, as they are a stronghold in the food making business, along with their famous neighbors. All dishes are immaculately presented and visually stunning, and the staff do a great job of explaining each dish. Come here to be pampered by a tantalizing array of savory dishes. We had an amuse bouche, eggplant terrine, endive salad, lentil dish, walleye fish, maple syrup dessert (quite outstanding!), French toast and the Île Flottante dessert.

Catherine N.

Yelp
Très bon. On y découvre des nouvelles saveurs. Sommelier sur place et ambiance cozy dans un quartier hip.

Yelp
AMAZING! My boyfriend and I went to Ile Flottante for our Thanksgiving dinner this year. I made the reservation ahead of time over open table and had to confirm a few days before arriving to the area. When we arrived to the restaurant they had cute name placards set up for all of the premade reservations. We were greeted by the friendly wait staff and seated. The space was wonderful - all black walls from ceiling to the floor, with black tables. This helped to ensure that guests attention was paid to the most important part of the experience - the food. We opeted for the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. It was absolutely spectacular. The wines paired nicely with the menu. The menu was mostly vegetarian. There was a few meat items - smoked trout in the first meal and duck in the 4th dish. Overall, the dishes were super flavorful. The wait staff was friendly and nice. Absolutely would recommend to anyone looking to have a high end meal in the Montreal area!

Vincent T.

Yelp
If your reservation at 6pm, DO NOT arrive earlier in winter as they will not let you in to accommodate a freezing -30celsius (we arrived at 5:53pm). We took the 5 courses dinner. Only one meat course. All of which are on the light side so you might be left (very) hungry at the end of the night.

Stacy T.

Yelp
We chose the 5 course menu - great service - cocktails were different and exciting - food was mostly vegetables except for one course but I didn't miss the meat because the dishes were delicious - don't expect to get out before 2 hours for the 5 course

Gabrielle L.

Yelp
This is the restaurant Les Deux Singe de Montarvie with a different name and a different decor. No more pictures of monkeys on the walls lol. The owner, chef and staff are all the same. The first time I went to Les Deux Singes was a few years ago and it blew my mind. The second time I went I was less impressed because the menu was Asian fusion and I didn't like that. Nonetheless I was excited to come back and try this restaurant under a different name. It definitely lived up if not surpassed my expectations! I got the Warsaw cocktail which was so good! It contained vodka, calvados, apple juice, rosemary syrup, lemon juice and bitters. I was worried that the rosemary taste would overpower everything else but it wasn't the case. It was strong but also a bit sweet but not too sweet. It was perfect. Basically there's no food menu and you have to choose either the three, five or seven course tasting menu. We chose three because choosing the five course meant getting two extra veggie courses which did not appeal to me whatsoever. Plus $45 for a three course meal is a steal! It's like going to a fancy resto during mtl a table! Before the first course we got an amuse bouche. Basically it was a slice of beet (aka beet carpaccio) with marscapone on top and caramelized hazelnuts. It was so delicious! I only eat beets because it's healthy but if beets were always cooked this way I probably would eat a whole lot more of it!! Plus I love when I get extra stuff besides what is written on the menu. Next came the duck ravioli with foie gras sauce and a mushroom tapenade. I think there might have been some spinach in there as well. This was my favorite dish of the night. The pasta was so fresh and the sauce was so rich. My boyfriend's favorite was the next course which was the veal with blue cheese on top and grilled veggies. The veal was actually pretty thick and it melted in your mouth. I personally love blue cheese but for those of you who don't, don't worry it doesn't have a very strong blue cheese taste. The veal was amazing! The grilled veggies however did nothing for me. Lastly my boyfriend ordered the île flottante dessert which was $8 extra. It was like a fancy banana split but the bananas were sliced up and they were at the bottom of the plate with ice cream, pomegranate and a caramel coulis on top. This was definitely the better of the two desserts. I had the dessert that came with tasting menu. It was a slice of pineapple with pineapple sorbet and dark chocolate ganache. It was very pretty to look at. It wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing. It was a bit too much pineapple overload for me. Considering everything before it was outstanding I expected the same from my dessert even though I'm not really a dessert person to begin with. That being said I would definitely come back. It's such a cute little restaurant and the food is delicious and pretty affordable! The menu changes every 2-3 months. Go if you haven't already!!

Yelp
For me, this is hands down the best restaurant in Montreal. Creative, varied dishes in a professional and cozy environment make up for the best dinners. I love going back here to discover their seasonal menu and be impressed all over again. I've never been disappointed. The price is also quite reasonable, especially for the quality of dishes delivered. I love the 'let us surprise you' formula. They also adapt the dishes for vegetarians so nicely that I've been thinking of asking for the vegetarian menu a few times, since the plates presented were so great too! I recommend trying this, 100%.

Victor M.

Yelp
They just opened friday the 27th of October, the place expanded having acquired the lease to the neighboring space. It's quaint and calm. You neither feel stuffed nor do you feel too exposed, the seating arrangement is spacious and even when full the restaurant doesn't feel busy. I opted for the 5 course set menu (you had the choice of 3 for 45$, 5 for 68$ and 7 for 85$). The meals were a combination of fresh market ingredients of whatever is in season. There was a dish of duck ravioli, braised pork, spigarello, mushrooms and a delicious squash seaweed. I have attached some pictures of the new restaurant and menu. (Which, according to the server will change every 6-9 weeks or so) I highly recommend you try it. Ps. Try the warsaw cocktail it's strong and surprisingly good (12$)

A group of 6 arrived at 6pm , just as the restaurant was opening, on a Thursday evening. Service was prompt. We could choose between 3, 5 or 7 course meal, but there was not an option for an a la cart menu. All 6 of us tried the 5 course meal. Food was pretty good. The veal was tender and juicy but the sauce was disappointing. The duck ravioli could have been perfect except it was too salty. Vegetarian dishes, surprisingly, stole the show - Dessert dish, mushroom dish, and beet dish were absolutely wonderful. 4/5 stars. Next time I would opt for 3 course meal and stick with vegetarian options. Atmosphere: casual and unpretentious. Dark modern feel. Overall, good.

Yelp
This is the best restaurant I've ever been to. Here is the part where I say "and let me tell you, I've been to restaurants before, I don't just eat Doritos and convenience store ham sandwiches every day," but seriously though I've been to some restaurants before, haha. You know like for example, we ate at Liverpool House the night before Ile Flottante (which seems to be a pretty well known joint in the city), and it didn't even come close. The food here is beautifully presented, and has inventive flavors and textures, yet somehow, is also comforting - I can't call it "comfort food" because it was also really sophisticated but it felt like a hug for your mouth at the same time. Our server was very knowledgeable about the dishes and the wines, and she was friendly and helpful but not overbearing, basically she was the perfect server and it seemed like that was the case for the entire staff. We got the 5 course meal with wine pairing, if you don't drink alcohol obviously skip the wine pairing but GET IT otherwise, even if you think you don't like wine that much. Each dish was complimented perfectly by the wine, and we got to taste wines we never would have found otherwise - some were effervescent, some earthy, one was a little bit funky, but each was delicious. Even dessert came with a mini cocktail - when you tasted the dessert by itself it was lovely, but then a sip of the cocktail alongside made your mouth explode (in a good way). My description falls short, just go there, it's a really special place.

Yelp
Went here with very high expectations. Didn't come out amazed. We were two people and had the 3 course menu with an extra 5$ to try the scallops dish. The amuses bouche was a carrot cake. Good taste and the crème fraîche was good but this was more of a sweet dish and would have preferred something salty to begin with. The king oyster mushroom was my favourite dish. So tasty but not enough!! The scallop dish was ok. Nothing special. And I am a huge scallop lover The duck was very good. The figs made the dish special but again portions were too small. The desert was an almond cake with ice cream and meringue. Nice but nothing to write home about. All in all I was happy with the visit but the portions were too small for the price. I wouldn't go back.

Yelp
Nice place and very attentive service. I like the fact they have a tasting menu and everything is a surprise, although it may not be for everyone. Their mushroom gnocchi is to die for, if you a big fan of mushroom you'll be happy to have that on your plate. Each plate is nicely presented and pretty to look at. It's a good place to check out if you're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
A true Gem! In every city there are hidden treasures where true greatness in food and drink can be found. In this small unspoken restaurant they have it all. The menu is set and all you pick are the number of courses and then you can chose a wine pairing or not. We were delighted by the creativity, quality, and amazing taste as each was presented. I have been to Michelin stared restaurants and this place surpasses many of them. Also need to tip my hat to their cocktail maker, Emile. He is a true genius, one of the best I have seen.

Yelp
FRI AUG 23rd: Incredible and One of the best restaurant experiences everrr (spoiled to have tried many). With so many amazing Montreal choices Im so so glad I ended up with this choice. Blown away. Not only the most gorgeous colorful and botanical presentation by chef and team but the most exquisite tasting as well. Front of house was warm and enthusiastic too which added to the overall charm....Perfect Perfect. (each had the 7 courses, shared wine pairings:) I could not imagine a better night....thank you to the wonderful team;)

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing wine, amazing service. My third time eating here and it just keeps getting better and better!

Yelp
The food was very disappointing... Overcooked fish, dry chicken, no red meat, underwhelming flavours in all. There were no real standout dishes and some I couldn't even finish. The menu specifies to say if you have food intollerences, but they made no changes at all. The hostess was very rude, though the waiter who was serving was really nice and did try. Drinks were good, but had to go eat somewhere else after.

Yelp
Delightful experience. Incredible food with fresh ingredients and absolutely beautiful presentation. The menu is heavy on vegetables indeed but then it is so well done that it even elates a carnivore. Great wines and excellent service. This definitely is one of those restos us Montrealers should be proud of .

Yelp
Here's the TL;DR Great food Excellent atmosphere Fantastic service The small dining room is nicely decorated. Although there is not much space it does not feel crammed. The food is world class. Every course was unique, well-balanced, and nuanced. The open kitchen is clean, and quietly efficient. The waitstaff met our every need and provided us with friendly, informative descriptions of each course. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is interested in having a world class meal.

Yelp
There is alot of thought into the design and aesthetics of the dishes, evident in the pretty plating of the dishes. The service is great and the bartender is willing to create drinks according to your palette. However the taste of the food was very subdued and just a little flat. Of 7 dishes, I would struggle to recall any. I do give them credit for being vegetable forward and not relying on meat to carry a menu.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about this restaurant - small, intimate, quiet setting with an extremely friendly staff. They greeted us and treated us as if we were regulars. The 4 course tasting menu was more than filling enough and we felt each dish provided a different flavor and was delicious in its own right. While we left full (with a take home box), we made a point to remember this place for our next visit and recommend it to friends and family. The cocktails were also very delicious. While a bit pricier, it is a great value and you get both high quality and quantity for your money.

Yelp
I love this place. It's been a while, so I forget the specifics, except that I know that I left feeling like I had to go back again. Given the number of good restaurants in Montreal that I have yet to try, going to the same place twice has high opportunity costs, but I think it will be worth it with this place. Food was unique and delicious. Ambiance was good. Maybe I'm a little too swooned by the fact that it's on St. Viateur (a street that I love)? But I swear, that's part of the whole experience. They change their menu every 3 weeks, so there's lots to try! Looking forward to going back this summer (probably need to make a reservation now to do that - they book up real fast and far in advance!!)

Yelp
We really enjoyed our evening here, great space, really friendly staff and fantastic food. My wife had the 3 course and I had the 7 course meal with some raw wine festival exhibitors from Italy. Stands out were the omelette seaweed sandwich, greek salad and the soup. They told us they change the menu about every two months, we will be back in January!

Yelp
My recent visit to this small restaurant in Mile End had me quickly convinced why it's been ranked as the top restaurant in Montreal! The upscale bistro is small (although they will be expanding next door soon) with an open kitchen in the back where you can see the micro greens and edible flowers on display used in the plate presentation. The space is quaint with a romantic feel thanks to the low lighting, dark tables and pretty wall art. This restaurant serves a refined tasting menu of eclectic dishes that are as beautifully presented as they are flavourful; the layering of fresh ingredients and textures was incredible to say the least! The menu changes seasonally and so I am already looking forward to my next visit to see what surprises the young but ultra talented chef has in store. There is no a la carte option, only three menus to choose from: regular, pescatarian and vegetarian ranging from 65$ to 55$, respectively; a steal considering you get 4 courses plus an amuse-bouche of that caliber. The wine pairing was perfection at an affordable 30$. We had the regular menu which included scallops, red cabbage purée, lardon, cauliflower mousse; quinoa with nuts and citrus salad; the amuse-bouche of broccoli mousse, sesame ash and charred broccoli and shishito peppers, verde and caviar; the cassoulet main; and a dessert of lemon coconut churros. As if that was not enough, the incredibly generous and attentive staff made for a perfect evening!

Yelp
Ok, here we go. I hate pricey restaurants. I think they're pompous and pretentious, rarely living up to the hype. Les Deux Singes does not fit that bill. This restaurant blew both myself, a prior restaurant manager, and my girlfriend, one of the best chefs I have ever met, far out of the water. We came in with no expectations, and were pleasantly surprised immediately upon walking in. The atmosphere is intimate, nuanced, and polite; the polar freakin' opposite of La Queue de Cheval (in my opinion, one of the worst restaurants in Montreal). After being directed to our table, with my name chalked in on a plaque, we sat and met our waiter. He had on a pretty sweet pair of glasses and a comforting disposition; extremely unobtrusive and respectful. We already knew what we wanted - the tasting menu - and ordered while discussing wine pairings with the waiter. Instead of upselling the crap out of us, he suggested his favorite - the second least expensive wine on the menu - and described it in excellent detail. The wine came out, matched up beautifully to the description (something that, in my opinion, is very rare), and set a precedent for the meal to follow. The food started coming out from the quiet, aromatic, and wonderfully choreographed open-air kitchen that was literally 10 feet away. Writing a review for this place is tough, as it is exceedingly difficult to accurately describe this food. It is mind-blowing. Both my girlfriend and I are gardeners, and the produce that they brought to the table bumped our standard of what "fresh" meant. The techniques were absolutely inspiring (broccoli foam?!). The plates were remarkably balanced. The flavors popped, but didn't compete with one another. The best part? These two seemingly-insatiable patrons were full when we left (score!). I don't know if it was the wine, the non-confrontational environment, watching the co-owners hustle alongside their staff, or the absolute shock I was feeling from the food, but I walked out of there in a trance. Our meal, after tip and with a bottle of wine, came in around $200 and we felt it was worth every. single. penny. If you want the best dining experience in Montreal, go to Les Deux Singes. You'll be happy you did.

Yelp
A lot of really nice touches plus some amazing vegetable forward food. The wine pairings are definitely worth it and I would totally do that again. WE did the 5 courses and they offer a number of variations on the number of courses even within the table, which is interesting and different than other places we've been. But a nice way to customize and work with your customers depending on how they are feeling each day. Service was excellent but relaxed. Seemed like the staff was enjoying sharing things with you rather than a stiff service, which was nice and make for an enjoyable evening.

Yelp
What a culinary experience I had dining here. It's like eating a master piece, a perfect balance of beauty and substance! This is why I love Montréal, great food and services and value for the quality of food. The drinks they serve are very well balance as well, not drown out by the alcohol or syrup. The appetizers were so cheerful and bright, it simply reminded me of happy summer time. Each of our main courses we ordered were all great on its own. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. It such a nice little place. Too bad it can't take a party bigger than 6, else I would bring the entire party to savor the experience! Will come back again!

Yelp
I cannot ask for a better place to eat in Montréal. The atmosphere is almost as funky as the restaurant's name. An X-ray observation lamp with two monkey heads and what appears to be an X-ray film of a hip can be spotted on the wall of this hipster garage restaurant. Very nice touch indeed. We started off with cocktails. I had the amaretto kumquat old fashioned which was amazing! Different from the traditional but worth breaking the rules to explore something more refreshing. Also to mention that our server was very helpful and understanding throughout our entire stay. Every dish was presented like a gem and tasted like heaven. Each element on the plate went so well with each other. If every restaurant offered food as good as Les Deux Singes de Montarvie, the world would be in a better place If someone asked me where they should go eat in Montréal - Les Deux Singes de Montarvie would be my answer.

Yelp
The food and service here are close to perfect (if not perfect). We did the $65 pp non-vegetarian tasting menu (which changes on a regular basis), and enjoyed every course, from the broccoli/shisito/fennel/black caviar based entree, to the beautifully delicate quinoa/citrus medley, the deconstructed "cassoulet", and the lemon/coconut meringue and churro dessert. The atmosphere is cozy, intimate and unpretentious. Great value for this price point, and a wonderful date night option.
