Where to Eat Pizza in New York City: A Guide

"Impasto has risen from the ashes of Aita Pizzeria, reopening as a petite slice shop making impressive Roman-style pizza with an extensive array of toppings. The team led by Roberto Aita offers square pizzas ranging from simple buffalo mozzarella with basil to creative options like a tuna melt with Sicilian fish. The crusts have a focaccia-like bounce with deeply browned edges and high-quality bread aroma." - Zachary Feldman

Google
Roman-style al taglio pizza. Square and thick, but not a Siccilian slice- much lighter and airier, melts in your mouth. Bottom has a paper thin hard crust that crackles. Excellent char. I got the Bufala - super simple, with an emphasis on premium ingredients- just large warm fresh bufala mozzarella, roasted italian tomatoes, and fresh basil. Out of this world. Seriously reminded me of pizza I had in Rome. On the way out, I saw they were selling fresh sourdough loaves so I picked up a half loaf for five dollars. Almost impossible to cut because the crust is so well done, but absolutely amazing thick flavorful, huge dark crust, with an absolutely pillowy interior. Next time, I’ll see if they have a cutting machine! Lol.

Google
Why did I wait so long before stopping here for a couple of slices? Pepperoni and sausage/mushroom square slices were both great. Bonus points for a couple of fresh basil leaves on the pepperoni, the really good Italian sausage used, and cutting each square slice in half. Only (teeny tiny) quibble is I wanted them both heated a bit more. Next time I’ll ask!

Google
Roman style pizza! The best I had in Brooklyn. Top notch ingredients. Very tasty.

Google
If I could give this place 10 or more stars I would!!! Proper, authentic Roman style “pizza a taglio” also with the traditional toppings! Sent me back to my childhood days, growing up in Rome I would eat this type of pizza almost every day!!!

Google
Thoroughly enjoyed my experience here! Staff was exceptional and even served me outside through the window because I had a stroller. The pizza itself was a fit doughy but filling nonetheless. The star of the show in my opinion, was the pistachio olive oil drizzle salt soft serve.

Google
Oh my god. Some of the best grandma pizza in NYC. The flavors are unreal. The ingredients are evidently of the highest quality, thus justifying the high prices. If you’re in the area, give it a shot!

Google
The Roman style “pizza al taglio” is one of my favorite. It’s the ultimate Italian fast food. Impasto makes their own very excellent version. The crust is airy and crispy and perfectly cooked. The toppings are of highest quality. If you go into one of their store (rather than take out), I highly recommend their mortadella sandwich: this is a variation on a very typical Roman style sandwich with mortadella, stracciatella and arugula. It’s just an excellent sandwich and a perfect meal. Very very highly recommended!

Yelp
Impasto stands out as a gem of square pizza slices. Usually I discard the crust but impasto drew me in to the last bite. Loved the flavors and varieties especially the unique potato one. Fresh, delicious and a good price point made my pizza experience memorable. This is a friendly neighborhood joint best for takeout but they do have a few tables outside. We are good to stand and eat on the not so busy sidewalk too.

Yelp
If you're on the hunt for delicious, Roman-style pizza that you can grab by the slice and take to go, look no further than this gem of a spot. With its interesting and unique ingredients and cozy atmosphere, this place is a must-visit for pizza lovers in the area. One of the things that sets this place apart is the sheer variety of toppings and flavors on offer. From classic Margherita to more creative options like prosciutto and figs, every slice is packed with bold, delicious flavors that will leave you wanting more. And with the ability to grab a slice or two to go, you can easily satisfy your pizza cravings whenever they strike. But the charm of this place goes beyond just the pizza. The cozy interior and cute outdoor seating area make it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy your meal, whether you're on your own or with friends. And the friendly and attentive staff are always happy to make recommendations or chat about the various ingredients and flavors on offer. Overall, if you're in the area, I highly recommend checking out this spot. With its delicious, Roman-style pizza and cozy atmosphere, it's the perfect place to satisfy your cravings and enjoy a tasty meal. And with the ability to grab a slice or two to go, it's a great option for busy days or when you're on the move.

Yelp
This review is for delivery through their official website, which I had an awful experience with that hopefully others can avoid. I ordered several slices for delivery on their official website. As you can see from the picture, Delivery is clearly-stated and I paid the $5.99 fee. After ~40 mins of my order status being that 'a courier was on the way' and the initial ETA passing, I called the restaurant requesting a status update. I was told that no one had come to pick the food up and that it was a third party's issue. However, when ordering from their website, there is no mention of Door Dash, GrubHub, etc, so myself and any other customer is not privy to whatever delivery service Impasto uses - we expect Impasto to arrange it themselves. After I pressed for more information, the woman on the phone then told me that when someone orders through their website, the customer has to pick the order up. She did not seem to understand or care about the fact that I paid a delivery fee and that my order clearly stated delivery was confirmed (as the picture shows). We were on the phone 15 minutes, and to make matters worse she would not process my refund, stating that the owner would call me. The owner never called me, but fortunately when I called back that evening a different woman processed my refund on the spot (thank you). Overall this was an extremely frustrating experience with a business that had seemingly no comprehension or concern of simple facts.

Yelp
The most delicious! Favorite pie in the city at the moment. The potato, rosemary, sausage pie is not to be missed.

Yelp
We ordered a half-and-half vai delivery from here. And so half of our experience was wonderful and the other half was meh... Our wonderful experience wa courtesy of the Prosciutto e Burrata pizza. So, so good... Our meh experience was a result of the Salsiccia e funghi... a tale of two slices, what can I say...

Yelp
3.5 stars Not the best slice of Roman pizza in the city, but it will do in a pinch, especially if you're in Brooklyn. I love Roman style pizza, but I find the bottom crust here too hard/crunchy, and the slices I tried were too cheese forward, overwhelming the other toppings that make Roman style pizza so interesting. But the flavors of the toppings are great, and imo there's not enough Roman style pizza (pizza al taglio) in NYC, so I always welcome a newcomer to the scene.

Yelp
I have only been here a few times and I highly recommend. Everything so fresh, the dough is so chewy, and generous amounts of toppings. They don't have dine in, take out or delivery only but in the warmer months they set up a few tables on the sidewalk.

Yelp
One of the best pizzas this part of Brooklyn. Crazy good. Also crazy expensive. Worth it when you really want a good pizza.

Yelp
I ordered a half pepperoni and sausage pizza tonight. The smell of old grease was super strong and disappointing. I'm not even sure of how that smell and taste would become infused in pizza like this. Is the oven coated in it? Is the cheese super old? Did they hate me specifically and wanted to punish me?! I removed the cheese and was able to choke down what remained, which is upsetting for a person who loves cheese. I assume this pizza sat in the summer heat all day too get to this point, which makes me think a health violation must exist. I don't know why I keep trying to find pizza as good as Saraghina, when it seems impossible. And at $28 with tip it's inexcusable. A $1 slice would have been much tastier as it wouldn't have sat around like this. This is definitely the worst meal I've had in this past year

Yelp
After visiting Venice and Rome a few years ago, my fiancée and I became big fans of pizza al metro. My fiancée came across this pizzeria so we decided to visit today. We ordered a couple slices and dined outside. We ordered a Rossa e bufala slice and their sopranos inspired bada bing slice topped with capocolla (pronounced gahb-a-gool), burrata, and artichoke. It was $14 for the two slices which they kindly cut in half for us to split.

Yelp
Crunchy, chewy and tasty. Such a great addition to the neighborhood...with a wide selection from margherita to potato to pepperoni to mushroom and sausage and more. Fresh ingredients too! I also like the soft serve gelatos. The staff is always great

Yelp
As I was making an online order for a delivery, I had a question about the Italian sodas so I called the place. The phone was answered promptly and the person answered my question and helped me to select the soda flavor I liked. Then I went back and finished my online order. The pictures of the slices on the website were very impressive and I was expecting some kind of approximation. Then wow! When the slices were delivered, they looked exactly like the pictures. Beautiful! Another thing I like is that the slices are not warmed up before they are sent so the fillings and toppings stay in place. I warmed them up in the oven this time and next time may use the cast iron on top of the stove. The crust was delicious and the texture was both chewy and airy and it supported the fillings on the slice. The ingredients are lovely. The sauce is very nice. The mushrooms and sausage are fresh and very good quality. The cheese is tasty and the pepperoni was curled up and nicely done. The potato and rosemary slice was excellent. There are some slices that I have not tried yet but I know that I will order again. I used to have to leave the neighborhood to get this type and good quality pizza but no more!

Yelp
Square slice specialist, and they know what they're doing! Pepperoni, sausage mushroom and Bada Bing were all delicious. Toppings high quality (not the canned mushrooms you typically find), great meat and the crust was very airy, almost like focaccia. Value is good too, for the quality. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
As of March 2021 my absolute favorite pizza in NYC. And the fact that it's 2 blocks from my house is a gift. Roman style (airy thick crust) and truly delicious. High quality toppings. Potato is my favorite but all are great.

Yelp
This is an amazing hidden slice spot in Fort Greene and the first place I've found Roman style potato slices that take me right back to Italy. Highly recommend trying one of everything at this place! My favorites so far are the potato and rosemary slice and the bada bing. I will be back to try more!

Yelp
Yum! Very flavorful and tasty combinations. I don't usually like zucchini but it works on this pizza. Crust is also delish!

Yelp
We order from Impasto a few times a month and this is how tonight's order looked. Clearly inedible and burnt. When we called the restaurant the woman was very unhelpful, offering no solutions to absolve the issue. Clearly we can't eat this pizza tonight. Also she admitted the owner has yet to update the menu so the margarita pizza you see on the menu currently that feeds 2-3 people is now a shrunken down personal pizza, so buyer beware. We offered to send her a picture of the pizza so she can see the quality of the food but she declined saying it was unnecessary. We recognize the smashed cheese was the driver's fault, but the pizza is burnt and the description doesn't match what we ordered, both items the restaurant is at fault. We want to continue to order from Impasto again so hopefully owner can take some accountability for the next customers.

Yelp
Impasto. Congratulations. You deserve a spot on the top 10 pizzas of New York and can give Gabriele Bonci a run for his money. Legit Roman pizza al taglio, the kind typically made at bakeries in Rome and sold by the cut and by weight. The foundation of most of their pizzas, the dough, olive oil, and San Marzano tomato, is perfect by itself. Then comes the fine quality cheese, prosciutto, or anything else that looks good to you. Highly recommend, I've waited for a place like this for a while.

Laney B.

Yelp
The pizza here is DELICIOUS. I travel to this neighborhood just for this pizza. Also, heats up really well for a square slice. Only thing is, I wish the employees were friendlier.

Varsha K.

Yelp
This place has amazing thick slices! It's unlike the usual Brooklyn slice. It also has amazing veggie options.

Joe B.

Yelp
Amazing slice. The bottom was super crispy, nice fluffy interior, and just enough sauce to cheese ratio. They has these amazing mortadella sandwiches that I was tempted to get but passed. Will do that next time. I highly recommend here. One Bite Everybody Knows the Rules...I'd give this slice a 9.2.
google avatar

Yelp
Really good creative pizza. The crust is too chewy sometimes, otherwise I'd give 5 stars.
google avatar

Robert R.

Yelp
Best pizza in Clinton Hill. The crust is unreal and the ingredients are fresh. Solid vegan choices help too (no mock cheese, though).
google avatar

Yelp
So good. Just simply so good, and awesome. One of the best square slices I've had in my lifetime ever. I think this place beats Emmy Squared, and maybe Sal's too - it's just such good pizza. Crisp crust but chewy, and the toppings are well done.

Yelp
Impasto you are absolutely magnificent, I had a spectacular experience here today. Menu, location, staff and ambiance are all the reasons why I enjoy this place. Every thing was so flavorful. The employees here are helpful, too. I will certainly come back to Impasto.

Halley Z.

Yelp
Amazing new pizzeria with a daily changing pizza menu. The crust is airy, chewy, and delicious and the toppings are fresh and exciting! Cute space with outdoor seating in front. Happy to know I can finally get a great slice in my neighborhood!

Yona S.

Yelp
We passed this place a few times, and finally picked up some slices. We couldn't have been more pleased (and we're aficionados!). The crust was delicious (and really well salted) and the toppings were high quality and delicious. Cannot wait to go back!
