SF’S Best Pre-Theatre Dining - Eater SF

"This charming Scandinavian restaurant from Swedish chef Roberth Sundell is just steps away from the opera, symphony, and ballet. But aside from convenience, Plaj offers a menu filled with classics like Swedish meatballs with potato purée, pan gravy, lingonberry, and pickled cucumber, alongside California-leaning dishes like halibut with asparagus, fennel, local mushrooms, mussel cream, and trout roe. Enjoy craft cocktails and wine with dinner, or at the cozy bar." - Ellen Fort

I booked early through Priceline and stayed four nights over the Easter weekend for very affordable price. I didn't need to interact with the front desk staff beyond checking in and out and the process was seamless both times. Housekeeping was respectful of the privacy tassel. One gentleman knocked on my door within ten minutes of going to my room just to check that I had everything I needed which was beyond what I expected. The room I booked, room 5, was one of their smallest, which wasn't a problem for me being solo but could be cramped for a couple. It was at the rear of the building facing a private alleyway next to the SF Ballet, so it was generally quiet. Despite the coziness the room was still well appointed with a generous counter/set of drawers that had a mini fridge, microwave, toaster, cutlery, tableware (including coffee mugs and wine glasses), a cutting board, toaster, paper towels, and a generous amount of hand towels and rags, which is great if you want to save money and eat in courtesy of the Trader Joe's just a few blocks to the west. One downside to this room is that there's no separate kitchen sink, just the one in the bathroom, but that was a minor inconvenience. The bed and bathroom are what you might find in a Hyatt Regency or Holiday Inn Express. Beyond that the hotel itself was nice. Yes it's old, and has that old building smell, and the floors aren't 100% even everywhere (but they don't creak and are covered in this soft floral print in the common halls and decent enough berber in the rooms), but none of that's really a problem, because it's clearly well taken care of. It's also in a great spot for the big musix venues in SF being right next to SF Ballet, and a couple blocks from each of SFJAZZ, the Bill Graham Civic Aditorium, and Symphony Hall. Highly recommended.

Stopped in San Francisco for a couple days after the Big Sur Marathon - This was a great location! East Hayes Valley location where so many of the colorful traditional homes are located. Walk to the painted ladies in about 8-10 minutes and the fun park there. Walk to cable car locations and local bus routes. The hotel itself is very historical and fun. Rooms are tiny - but we expected that. Very clean, comfy beds, best linens and pillows. Lovely and updated, modern baths. Felt very safe in the neighborhood, nothing concerning at all, very artsy neighborhood, ballet, opera, civic center. Also walk to Trader Joes in 3-4 minutes. Salt & straw ice cream close, pizza close.

Google
Quaint inn in Civic Center. Stayed here for a long weekend with my boyfriend while we were in town for a wedding, and it was a comfortable stay. We weren’t able to check in early but they were able to store our bags securely. The room was cozy and they have a TV that you can connect to your phone. They gave us macarons as a little snack on Friday afternoon and they have hot water/teas in the lobby. WiFi is free and it’s a fairly short walk to the BART station. The employees were all very nice and the entrance is secured by keycard at night for security. Overall, it’s a good place to stay for a reasonable price.

Google
I found it to be rather charming and very "San Francisco". The staff was friendly and very helpful. They even let us store our luggage after checkout to explore before heading to the airport. It was located near almost everything we needed i.e. Trader Joe's, dining options, CVS, Muni stops and the BART! I'll definitely stay again. Thank you Inn at the Opera staff!

Daniel is a hotel god. We are so lucky that he greeted us. I inadvertently booked the rooms for the wrong night. He not only got us a room, but helped us get a refund. He had great suggestions for dinner. We would have been so lost without him. The hotel is in a great location and the rooms were wonderful.

We stay here often when we come to the city. It's a great spot close to shows and a wonderful little area called Hays Valley filled with food and shops. Walking distance to the Opera House, Civic Center Bill Gram center, and many other theater and performance venues.

This was my first stay at the Inn and I was delighted. The remodeling is gorgeous and classy. I had a Superior Suite with a queen bed, sofa bed in the sitting area, and two full bathrooms. The kitchenette had a microwave and refrigerator. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. I stayed three nights to see the San Francisco Ballet next door at the War Memorial Opera House - the most convenient hotel for the Opera House.

I come to this place all the time it like how they are willing to always help me out and make sure that I get the best price available. They are in the process of renovating the rooms. I stayed in one of the rooms that just got completed and I do like the new look. The new furniture as well as the new window shade give it a cleaner look

Yelp
Best service! Staffs are very friendly. We love the European style of the rooms and suites.

Yelp
The Inn at the Opera is beautiful! Lots of updates including our bathroom, the lobby, and stairwell is so pretty! Definitely a much older hotel and a smaller Ballerina Room, but it was just me and my daughter and we had a blast. Always the coffee maker, microwave and mini-fridge that make it perfect to order-in and store left-overs and reheat! Von, Christian, & Elizabeth who worked the front desk were so pleasant and helpful, housekeeping was happy to provide towels and room touch ups and also super friendly. I loved that everything was within walking distance from Hayes Valley, cute restaurants, and cafes. Parking is about 40bucks overnight and just a block away, but plenty of street parking if you're feeling lucky and not leaving anything in the car. Japantown is just a drive over as well. We had a good time and the room was small but fit well for the two of us! Can't wait to re-stay!

Yelp
This is a beautiful little boutique hotel with under 60 rooms from what I remember. It's located in the heart of the opera district and right across from city hall, the opera house, and orchestra hall. There's tons of restaurants and bars around the area and easy access to any part of the city being near the main streets with busses that run across town. It's also super safe and never felt unsure walking around here late night. As for the hotel, the elevator is small, but it's super old and cool. The rooms are relatively small but not bad considering this is a very old hotel. They are laid out very efficiently and the windows provide a nice breeze with a ceiling fan that keeps you cool. The front desk service and housekeeping were very good. They even have coffee and a ton of different types of tea bags in the lobby 24 hours a day. For the price, this place is a real great spot to stay in.

Yelp
Mind you, this is a review from someone who's stayed here 30 plus years in a row. This will be the last one. This place began deteriorating before the pandemic and now it's in free fall. To be sure, the front desk people are wonderful, but management gives them nothing to work with. First, we tried to make a reservation through Wyndham. No one answers the phone and the website gives incorrect information. We reserved through Bookings.com which, according to the hotel, absolves them from all responsibility. Last year, we paid extra for housekeeping.EVERY SINGLE NIGHT we had to beg for towels, cleaning, etc. This year, we asked about housekeeping six different times. We got six different answers. We had to fight for towels and to get garbage picked up. We were told " housekeeing only makes the bed every four days." Not "change" the bed MAKE the bed." it's up to the housekeeper" we were told. HUH? We asked for a written statement of what housekeeping does but it doesn't exist. We've asked to speak to the housekeeping manager. Last year, she waved a hand in my face and yelled "I'm busy. I don't talk to guests." Apparently this year, there isn't one. Customer loyalty clearly doesn't matter nor do standards. We'll stay elsewhere after this trip. Note to Wyndham: DONT answer with a phone number or email you don't answer. I'm too old for that foolishness UPDATE: see the reply below. Not even an apology.

Yelp
Gorgeous interior and wonderful staff. Christian was very welcoming and provided great service and assistance when needed. The AC isn't the best in our room but having an open window takes care of that. Also, really good cookies at the front desk.

Yelp
Stayed here recently with my wife while visiting San Francisco. The hotel was clean and well kept, the staff was friendly and helpful. The location is excellent and there are plenty of good places to eat and things to do within an easy walking distance. The building is older and like most in San Francisco lacks air conditioning, but this probably won't bother you. The bathroom was small but well updated and very adequate. I would stay here again.

Yelp
Lovely boutique hotel, feels straight out of Paris. Was completely remodeled a few months ago, from the rose carpeting, to the floral wallpaper, to the marble and gold bathrooms. The mini kitchen was great for storing and reheating leftovers, and the large pitcher made it easy to bring up filtered water from the lobby. Very comfortable stay in the fun Hayes Valley neighborhood with delicious restaurants, great shopping and steps from the SF Ballet at the Opera House. Also easy and affordable Ubers to all the SF sites.

Yelp
We stayed here last night via RCI points, and it was the most uncomfortable place for a pregnant woman. The heat is being pumped in the hotel when it is 67 outside. There is NO way to fix the temp in your room despite the knob saying it exists. A "suite" is not suitable enough to put a full-sized inflatable mattress on the floor for my toddler since there is zero space. I could have dealt with the small room if we were able to fix the temperature, but couldn't. It was the most uncomfortable night's sleep I have had in a very long time. If you are just a couple looking for a place to crash, then it's great. A family with a kid, or pregnant? Forget it. I was so disappointed. Good thing we didn't spend actual money on this place.

Yelp
Post pandemic they did not reopen the restaurant but there are plenty of walkable options in the area. Rooms are pretty tiny (somewhat standard in San Fran) but very clean, the staff is friendly and they give snacks upon check in. And if your stay includes a Friday, they have complementary wine and cheese as well. Good value overall, highly recommend!

Yelp
Great place to stay right in the city. Booked from AirBnb. Nice front desk. Cozy room. Like a sanctuary for the night.

Yelp
11/24/2018: The complimentary breakfast served this morning was remarkably disappointing . . . It's 8:45 AM-The breakfast buffet platters and bowls served on the table were almost empty; the restaurant opens for breakfast at 7:00 AM and stops serving breakfast at 10:00 AM. First, I began serving myself: Coffee, OJ-very little OJ was left in the glass pitcher, and iced H2O; afterwards, I noted from a distance from where I was sitting how empty the bowls and platters were on the buffet table . . . I approached the right side of the buffet table where this thoughtless woman began heaving the remaining strawberries and the other selections of fruit onto her plate: I began glaring at the woman so, she "thoughtfully" left me ONE strawberry! WTH!!!! As a result of this woman heaving the majority of the fruit onto her plate, I managed absconding a meager clump of red grapes, one cube of watermelon, one cube of pineapple, one cube of cantaloupe-that's all I could get (!!!!); I shifted to my left, grabbed a half of an "everything" bagel, a piece of smoked Canadian (medallion size) bacon-there were only three minuscule pieces of Canadian bacon left! I couldn't believe my eyes: I saw that thoughtless woman take at least, FIVE PIECES OF CANADIAN BACON PLACING ONTO HER PLATE-GRRRRRRR~WHY are you doing THAT, Woman, eh???? I began sighing, shaking my head, glaring at that woman heaving the remaining portions of buffet piled high onto her plate . . . leaving me a slice of American cheese, the four remaining slices of tomatoes left on the platter were water-logged~definitely passing on the tomatoes, and a meager dollop of cottage cheese because the yogurt bowl was empty, and a few remaining cupcakes were left from that woman's buffet spree so, I took a small, blueberry cupcake. EYE ROLL . . . Regardless, I gave a $3.00 gratuity for the male waiter who upon my request, I asked if, he would melt the cheese and Canadian bacon on the half bagel left from the buffet table I managed absconding from that woman grabbing the majority of the buffet, breakfast selection which he graciously complied. The melted American cheese with the Canadian bacon underneath was the highlight of my remarkably disappointing, the Inn At The Opera's breakfast~ho-hum.

Yelp
We've stayed here for a week as an exchange with our Interval International and this is our last night. It's a quaint, older building that seems to be kept up. Our room was very small with only one chair. You can stream your own Netflix, etc to the Chromecast, but that doesn't work while running a VPN. We weren't willing to turn it off, so we didn't utilize that feature. They had a welcome event with complimentary wine and appetizers on Friday night. It sounded like they do this every Friday evening. Housekeeping leaves a note on a pad each day asking if you need any maintenance or have requests. The linens were changed every day, but I am annoyed that I asked to have 3 bath towels instead of two. Every day (except the day that I wrote the request) I had to go down to the front desk to get my third towel. If you want ice, you can take your bucket down to the desk or call down to ask for some to be brought to your room, as they access it from a back room not open to guests. A big shout-out to Cesar at the front desk, who was personable and friendly. In fact, everyone at the front desk was friendly and helpful. Our major complaint was the noise level from the office directly below our room. If you are in Room 21, you will not need an alarm clock, because the office staff will wake you up. Likewise, they will keep you awake at night as well, so bring your earplugs. I kid you not, it sounds like they are in the next room with the door open. I needed to make a conference, so my husband went down to ask them to be a little more quiet. The response he got was, "Well, they are in a meeting too." Apparently, the guests don't come first here. Even after our request, one guy was singing...in their meeting...LOUDLY! If we were as loud as they were, they would most likely knock on the door to tell us to tone it down.

Yelp
Made a reservation online, never received a confirmation email. Wanted to call to ask about parking, but their phone has been disconnected. Happily, I still had the confirmation tab open in my browser, so I had my confirmation number and could use their system to cancel my reservation (at least, hopefully--no confirmation email of the cancellation either). Save yourself the frustration--book elsewhere.

Yelp
I am calling for the second day in a row to sort out the issue below and the hotel is still not answering. "Due to heavy calling we cannot complete your call at this time."

Yelp
The website shows a bar/restaurant- there is none. Very nice staff but lacking any services- no housekeeping- wash your own towels or pay $5.00 for clean ones- any trash hangs around in your room. Need coffee refills- need to get at front desk. Close to symphony and good restaurants around the corner.

Yelp
Not a bad hotel. I'm not sure the price because I staying here for work and I didn't choose the place so this is a total honest review. When I first walked in it was meh was giving very much trying to be fancy but not quite there yet. Check in was pretty smooth especially considering it was a check in after 11pm. My first impression of the room was awful which looking back, im just used to more upscale places smh, I need to humble myself but I'm an LA girly so yanno lol, to be honest it's a small room with the necessities. The bathroom was super nice and upgraded though. The room was very clean so was the whole establishment in general. The staff was above and beyond great. Von and Mary helped me out and they were the best ever. The rooms come with a microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker a sink, a tv that uses chrome cast which was amazing and there is a safe in the room. When you check in they give you such a cute little snack bag. I forgot my key in the safe in my room after 11pm and Von was so helpful and gave me new keys. The staff at this place was incredible they really hold it down. There is not complimentary breakfast here or balconies here. There is also not a designated smoking area and the rooms are no smoking.

Yelp
Really great location for this cute hotel. We stayed her for three nights. The staff was super friendly and the room was clean and large. The only complaint is that the bed was too hard for my liking. Other than that we had a great time!

Yelp
My wife and I stayed here recently with our two young grandsons while in SF. There were problems, and pros and cons with this place. The problems with this place is that they did not have the room we reserved (we are Wyndham Vacation Resorts owners and had reserved this place for a three day weekend for the four of us). The room they said we were *supposed* to have was not available and they tried to put us in a room that clearly would not have fit four people. Three at best, and that would be cramped. After pointing this out to them they actually gave us a second room, which we put our grandkids in. Problem solved. Another issue with this hotel is that be prepared to be around a lot of homeless people. On top of that, if you are walking here from the BART, be prepared to walk through a portion of the Tenderloin, which is like skid row and the WORST part of town. We witnessed people smoking crack and making drug deals, peeing in public, whores, and poop on the streets. On the other hand maybe this was a good lesson for our grandkids on what life can turn out to be if you're not careful, which especially poignant for them since their mom died of an OD. I kid you not. On the plus side, the smallish room was pretty nice, and the staff was very friendly and helpful aside from the faux pas of sticking us with a bad room at first. Also, there are lots of great restaurants within easy walking distance, and the San Francisco Opera, Ballet, and Symphony are a very short walk away. Anyway, if you can deal with the warts, this place is a-ok.

Yelp
This is part of our timeshare network, so is a good deal for us. Not sure if you book it as a normal hotel if it's a good deal or not. The building is old. Tiny old-style elevator. Decor may be updated, but the building does have the feel of being almost a century old (which it is). Staff is friendly and helpful. Breakfast not as good as last time. I remember last time having a few more options. Somewhat disappointing. The room was comfortable. There is no view from any of the windows, they just allow light in. The location is reasonably convenient to dining, and not far from the civic center (where there is a BART station, buses, and an electric street car). We've never had issues getting around from here, though heading towards Chinatown you would have to walk through an area with lots of homeless and/or drugged-out people (the area is called "Tenderloin"). Just don't walk that direction, but instead get a bus or ride-share. Every other direction appears to be OK. The area around the Inn feels fine, nobody sleeping on the sidewalk, clean, safe. It's nice. This will continue to be our preferred accommodation when we visit San Francisco.

Yelp
The Inn at the Opera is a hidden gem at the amazing price of $125/night. It's in a great location within walking distance of public transportation, some good shopping, museums, courthouse and restaurants. The rooms were pretty spacious (compared to other hotels in the city) and had everything we needed: kitchenette, outlets and a wardrobe. We had two rooms for two nights (my spouse and I and my in-laws in the other room). It was neat to see the different layouts and views. Our room was bigger, but there was a temperature problem. It was musty so they kept the window open. The window made it too cold! Other than that, we were really pleased with our room. The hotel is pretty quiet (it's a time-share) and it's on a side street. Our local friends were able to get metered street parking out front pretty easily. One of our friends is a paralegal and often makes travel plans for attorneys. She commented that she'll have to keep this hotel in mind when her attorneys have trials at the nearby courthouse. The hotel staff were incredible. They were friendly and accommodating. There were freshly baked cookies every afternoon. There was tea and coffee throughout the day. We took advantage of the free breakfast every morning (I ate cottage cheese mixed with fresh tomatoes and a croissant on the side).

Yelp
Whenever I stay in San Fran, I stay here. My timeshare makes it so easy to set reservations. Whenever I call to schedule a stay, it's always available. It's also in the perfect location just one street from City Hall. It's actually the view walking out the door. And every planned visit that we had during this visit, was just a very short walk away, so it felt like it was right in the middle of everything. The staff is also great and very friendly. They always greet you when you walk in & walk out, and wish you a nice outing. I love the little continental breakfast spread every morning until 10am. But the reason for the 4 stars is that there is no AC. There is heating though. And the rooms are homey: the 1 bedroom gives you all the space you need. The restroom is spacious & provided with all the extra toiletries included shampoo, conditioner, and mouthwash. There's also a mini fridge in the unit, a kitchen sink, coffee maker & microwave. I hope to set up another stay here again soon.

Yelp
Checked in Sunday for a two night stay...checked out Sunday an hour later. Room was small with no heat and no air. They put an old space heater in the corner for you. Please see the pictures so you can understand what you are getting. I spent 30 minutes of that hour being hassled by staff about being a Shell Owner and going to a Timeshare update, etc. When I said no repeatedly and finally walked away, the girl had the nerve to tell me she was downstairs every day and would be checking back with me to try and get me to go throughout my whole stay! When I finally got to the room I got 4 calls from staff on the land line.... We checked out to stay somewhere we wouldn't be harassed. This location is close to the opera house but really nothing else and the parking is a nightmare; you wait for the valet forever. I have stayed here half a dozen times in the past and the hotel is ok as long as you won't be spending much time in it... Now that Shell is going under they have apparently unleashed their high pressure sales people to sick everyone who reserved a room. It's sad really. I will not be back.

Helen W.

Yelp
The billing situation at this hotel is abysmal. And they won't answer their phone all day. I reserved a room with a bed and folding couch through a third-party and paid 631.40 for two nights. They called this a double suite. Turns out the hotel had us booked in a room with only one bed. The hotel said they'd "upgrade" us and charge us extra $60 per night. I said NO - they can't charge an upgrade on top of what we already paid because we already paid for a room with a folding couch. The staff person said "don't worry, we're upgrading you from *our* price for a one-bed room, which was $230". So they ran an invoice and showed me that we would owe something around $650, I think it was $647. This seemed reasonable - the difference of $17 from what I already paid was not an issue. She even showed me this invoice on the computer screen which included a refundable deposit of $100. The total of $747 was visible on my credit card statement as well. When we checked out, my credit card still had the $747 and they assured me repeatedly that that the deposit of $100 would be released from the credit card and I would only owe $647. Today I checked the credit card and I see that they CHARGED me 136.80 on top of the 631.40 I paid the third party! So, what 2 people at the front desk assured me was not what they did. Instead of the total charge of $647, they Just added some upgrade fee on TOP of what I already paid the third party for the room. At most they should have charged me $17 dollars to bring the amount I already paid up to what they said I owed on the room ($647.) Now I've been calling them all day and no one picks up the phone. What kind of hotel is this? This is extremely stressful. I will dispute the charge on my credit card, but just a warning, if you reserve a room at this hotel, try to call the front desk to make sure you're getting what you reserved.

Yelp
Small European style hotel off the hip (foodie and shopping haven of the) Hayes Valley neighborhood and directly next to City Hall... the Ballet ... and Davies Symphony hall . There are a few different room types ranging from small to large. If you have done any travel outside the USA this is a typical and standard/lovely hotel ( think pensione ). The one thing that is NOT small about this location is the service provided by the staff. They are connected, communicative , concerned for your comfort and treated us like family during our stay... I wish I knew all their names but Tashi, Brenda, Vandy, Tsering and of course the amazing Mary (!!!) were what any manager could hope for in representing a property. It may not be a place for a large family but if you are a couple looking for a romantic musical night or a week in the city of San Francisco "The Inn at the Opera" gets my recommendation.
google avatar

Emilia D.

Yelp
BEWARE! If you are thinking of buying into a timeshare at Inn at the Opera, please think twice. Once they have you they disappear out of the picture leaving you holding the bag. We owned a week at the Inn at the Opera for many years. We are getting on in age and do not travel much anymore so we decided to deed it back to Shell Vacations (now also known as Wyndham Vacation Resorts). The transaction was completed in March 2020. When we received the annual property tax bill from the City of San Francisco, we sent it to Wyndham/Shell to accepted ownership of the property. Apparently, they ignored it. Now we receive a penalty notice for not paying. When I called Wyndham/Shell, I just get the runaround. They cannot tell me what they did once they took our property back. They have no proof that they sent it to the title company to transfer the title. It's been a nightmare and we're in a bind. If we don't pay the property tax bill, they will not only penalize us, but they will eventually place a lien. Shell/Wyndham sells timeshares at the Inn at the Opera. Timeshares are very seductive but please learn from our mistake and know that Shell/Wyndham is a huge rip off.

Yelp
They posted a response 4 months later on TripAdvisor to contact them once again at InnAtOpera@wyn.com.. when they never responded to my email sent there on Fri, Jun 21, 4:27 PM. What a joke. Seems like a tactic to act like they'll actually do something about it.

We booked this room via booking.com. The described room "Queen Studio" was not the room pictured as per web page. BEWARE OF THIS ESTABLISHMENT!! THIS IS BOGUS!!

Yelp
#550 Inn at the Opera is a nice, smaller hotel with very friendly, personable service. It is newly renovated (some floors are currently undergoing renovation) and features a popular restaurant (Plaj). Located behind City Hall and next to the Opera, the location of this hotel is ideal for anyone visiting the opera, ballet, or symphony. Located at Franklin and Fulton, it's a short walk from McAllister and Van Ness, which have major bus routes. It's also just a few minutes away (walking) from the Van Ness and Civic Center Muni/BART stations on Market, so it's really easy to get around from here. Pros: Small hotel (48 rooms) so staff remembers you Very friendly service (greeted every time we went in or out) Free wifi Computer in lobby for guests to access internet Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, coffeepot, dishes, silverware, and sink (great for having a drink or heating up leftovers) Free breakfast (varies slightly daily: cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, muffins, breads, bagels, English muffins, cream cheese, jam, tomatoes, fruit, coffee, tea, oj, etc.) Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at 3pm and apples in the lobby Daily basic cleaning for timeshare owners (other timeshares may only offer a single midweek cleaning) Quick heater in room Duvets that get washed (no yucky reused comforters contaminating the bed) Makeup remover wipes/cloths in bathroom Windows that open (love that fresh air!) Street parking may be available, but use caution Cons: Wifi's weak signal makes it practically useless Only one small elevator (holds 4 people) Although they are renovating, there are some areas clearly needing repair (like the baseboards in our room, or the walls of the elevator) Parking is valet only Rooms are on the small side (but this is typical for an old SF property) Walls are on the thin side Overall, the pros greatly outweigh the cons. I would definitely stay here again. We stayed in one of the remodeled rooms (top floor-7th)and while it is small, it was enough room for two people to comfortably spend a week. One of the biggest perks of staying here is the free breakfast, which can really save money and start the day off right. And the best part of that? They have fresh blueberries and raspberries every morning. Breakfasts aren't always very vegan friendly, but this one was 100% vegetarian with a lot of vegan options. Seriously awesome.

Yelp
This is our fourth time staying here. The first time we stayed in a studio and it was super tiny. The only advantage of it was that it had windows to the street. All other units have windows to an alley, looking at another building. We learned that we need to book the 1 bedroom deluxe as it has two bathrooms and a separate dining room and living room area. So, we stayed in this unit several times now. I don't mind not having a view; the size of the unit totally makes up for it. The staff is always super nice, helpful and accommodating. The rooms will soon need an update, but they're always very clean. We don't use the kitchenette here a lot, because they offer free complimentary breakfast. (Since it's a kitchenette, it does not have a stove.) However, their free breakfast is better than most complimentary breakfasts you can find anywhere. It varies from day to day, but one day you find hard boiled eggs and the other day you find ham and cheese selection. They always have cereals, granola, fruit bowl, fresh bananas, all sorts of pastries, onion bagel with cream cheese and tons of condiments (even peanut butter). On Sundays, they even have pancakes. So, no matter what, take advantage of the complimentary breakfast! The hotel also hosts one of the better restaurants in town, Plaj, so you don't even need to go out. Recently, the neighborhood got gentrified and now there are quite a few decent restaurants in walking distance (Robin, August (1) Five, Barcino, Monsieur Benjamin, Jardiniere), so you still wouldn't need to get your car out of valet. It's a huge plus! You are right behind the Opera, the Symphony Hall, the City Hall and the Ballet Institute, so you're definitely in good company. :-) The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it is not a 5-star hotel. The rooms and bathrooms will need to be updated/remodeled a bit, but we're happy here. It hardly ever gets too hot in SF (it's July and we asked for another heater) so not having an AC was never an issue with us. Our bedroom does have a ceiling fan though. If anything, we needed a heater. Unfortunately, the old wall heaters are not functioning anymore, so they do put a revolving space heater in the unit. Since we have two separate rooms where we sleep, we asked for another one and they were more than happy to give us another one. The bathrooms do have a heater lamp in the ceiling, so you can always heat up the bathrooms with that. I see that some people are complaining about the AC and heater situation. Well, we did not have any problem with it, so that's why I'm not deducting more points for that. :-) We always have a 4-star experience here.

Yelp
We're SVC/Wyndham timeshare holders and we love this little boutique hotel. We live in the Eastbay and every now and then we like to get away. The location you just can't beat. The Davies Symphony Hall is walking distance away. The restaurants ARE PLENTY! Around the corner you'll hit Hayes St, many to choose from breakfast, lunch and dinner...plus trendy little shops that are sprinkled around. Or grab an Uber and check out the nearby areas like Polk, Mission, Valencia. The restaurant attached to the hotel only serves dinner which was delicious plus the cocktail list is yummy!! However, they do continental breakfast, which in my opinion is very good and has variety. Parking is tricky, you may want to valet it cause street parking is sketch.

Yelp
Noisy. I had stayed here previously and it was fine. It's a convenient location, and while the room was dark due to the lack of a view, it was comfortable. This time I was staying here again for work. The hotel was full and I was placed in room 26. If you stay here in the future, DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 26. The room sits directly above the reception desk. When you sit on the bed, you can hear the conversations of be hotel staff and various guests. You can hear the music playing in the lobby speakers. You can hear all the arrivals and departures to the hotel and in and out of be Scandinavian restaurant with the obsequious name of "Pläj." I asked the front desk staff member if I could move and he informed me that there was no possibility until the next day. And so I tried to sleep, interrupted all night by various pronouncements from below. It should also be added that the check-in process was extremely lengthy and the hotel charged the wrong credit card (my employer was footing the bill but they charged the card I put down for incidentals instead). A lot of hotels make this mistake, but rarely an upscale hotel like this one. If Inn at the Opera truly cares about guests and its reputation, it should convert room 26 to an office. The price it charged for this room was laughable given the noise conditions.

Yelp
It's 100+ degrees today so I was really excited to check into the hotel to relax inside... that was until we found out there is no AC, no fans (ceiling or otherwise), nothing in the rooms to keep them cool or circulate air. It's a holiday weekend so it's too late to find another hotel. I never thought I would have to check in advance if a hotel had AC :/ I won't be sleeping much these next two nights. Update: I attempted to sleep with a cold, wet washcloth on me but the water wouldn't even get very cold plus there is a constant noise coming from what I assume are the pipes in the walls? Best way to describe it is it sounds like someone snoring from inside the walls. We did sleep with the window open to try to get some air in the room but this just added to the noise so it didn't help the sleeping situation. Not looking forward to night #2. Update after total stay: we were assured we would get a fan for the second night since people were checking out and we still didn't get one. I took a cold shower so that my wet hair could help keep me a bit cooler. Slept with a cold wet washcloth in me again. At least the water got cold this time. *I will say that their complimentary breakfast was quite delicious! Lots of fresh fruit, waffles with various topping choices, drink options, etc. Definitely the best part of our stay thus far. I am adding one star for this alone. (Note, this was for the weekend breakfast. Monday's was far less to brag about... a bit disappointing after Sunday's.)

Yelp
Let me start by saying Inn at they Opera really made my birthday trip everything!!!!! I rarely ever celebrate my birthday so I thought I would this year in San Fran. The Inn at the Opera Staff were absolutely wonderful, they made sure the check-in process was smooth, the rooms were very clean and disinfected. Also the room were very spacious and made me feel like I was at home. Not to mention that staying at The Inn at the Opera puts you literally in front of restaurants, shopping, ferry's, etc. we we literally 2 miles from The Full House Set....!!!!!!! Also I would like to shout out Cherri for the bottle of wine and snacks!!!!!! Thank you guys so much I will definitely be back (Room 72)

Yelp
Let's keep this simple: 1.Crappy service 2.Over priced rooms 3.room service sucked 4.don't trust them with your car Their staff needs to take responsibility if they cause damage on a car.

Yelp
Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay at the Inn at the Opera, and we'd definitely stay here again. Location-wise, it was perfect. Right by city hall, within walking distance of the BGCA (which is where we were seeing some shows and the reason for our visit), and within walking distance of all public transit. The hotel itself is small and very historic. It's not big, but it is really nice. I love the elevator, which had a max capacity of 4 and was more like a closet. It was even behind a normal door on each floor. In general, the staff was super great. Since the hotel is so small, they really get to know you. They all recognize you on sight and do just about anything they can to help you. There are also lovely little touches, like fresh-baked cookies available in the lobby every day at 3. Room-wise, they are small. Hey, it's a historic hotel! Deal. But despite the small room, we had a microwave, mini fridge, armoire with a few drawers (no closet), small table with two chairs, etc. I felt like they tried their hardest to make the rooms as comfortable as possible given the space restraints of the room. Bathroom wasn't huge but wasn't too tiny. There wasn't a very large area to put your toiletries (there were some small glass shelves mounted on the wall). Shower water pressure and temperature were good. I absolutely adored that you could actually open the windows at night, and we never had to use the in-room thermostat. There was a little coffee maker and an actual set of dishes, glassware and mugs. Nice touch. The free continental breakfast was better than most hotel continental breakfasts. It generally consisted of bagels, pastries, a fruit selection, yogurt, cottage cheese and cereal. A bit carb heavy. I love carbs, so that's OK, though. Coffee, juice. To go cups. Pretty fine really. We did have two minor complaints: -There was mold on the grout in our bathroom. I did feel like it was cleaned, but the bathroom just needed a re-grouting. -There was no full-length mirror in the room... you had to go down to the lobby if you wanted to look in one. Also we had one major complaint: We arrived due to an early flight around 11 a.m. Checkin isn't till 3. We called and asked about an early checkin and were told they couldn't promise us one. When we arrived, we were told they could hold our bags but that our room was not ready. They could not give us an estimate of when it would be clean, but they would call us when it was ready. We left our bags. We never received a call. And we finally just went back after 3 and checked in at the normal time. If they were going to not let us check in early, it would have been better to tell us so to begin with. And, if they really just do not offer early checkin, they should not pretend that they do. If that's the case, I would encourage them to reevaluate how they handle this request. It's fairly common and (in my opinion) not unreasonable at all for a guest to request and receive an early checkin. But overall, we had a lovely time and found this hotel met our needs in a very satisfactory way. We would definitely stay again.

Yelp
I stayed here last week, for the week and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. I didn't know what to expect except a smallish room and little or no kitchen facilities. The room(s) are smallish and there is only a small fridge and micro (similar to an upscale Hampton Inn or Embassy Suites). The continental breakfast each morning exceeded my expectations and was excellent. The service extended by the staff here is also well above average for a property of his type. My only issues and they were small: no paper towels/napkins in the rooms, ice is obtained by going down to the front desk only, there were not back up room amenities like toilet tissue, extra towels, soap, etc. All being said, I hope to stay here again on a future trip SF whenever that might be!

Yelp
Not as nice as it may seem from brochure. Hard beds, like sleeping on concrete. TV wasn't working first night of stay. Breakfast spread is amateurish and not even worth time. Will not stay here again.

Yelp
BUYER BEWARE! DO NOT STAY HERE!! Its been such a saga: 1. I prepaid for a room. Upon checkin, the hotel desk asked for my credit card, "for incidentals only" they said. 2. Instead they charged me again, a second time, for a room. 3. After calling, and talking to various people at the desk, and being rudely talked down to, I eventually got hold of a supervisor who found the issue: Inn at the Opera had inadvertently charged me instead of a booking company. 4. He said he'd reverse the charge while I waited. Instead, the hotel tacked on ANOTHER charge! 5. I called the hotel a few more times, then spoke to both Shell Vacations Club, who I guess handle such complaints, and finally my credit card company.... hours upon end. The duplicate room charge has now FINALLY been reversed. 6. [Update] Shell Vacations Club said they can't coordinate a refund for the other charge and asked me to call the hotel yet again. What a circus.

Yelp
I booked a last minute trip to San Francisco this weekend and decided to try Hotwire.com for a good deal on a room. What I got was a GREAT deal on a FANTASTIC room at the Inn at the Opera. Then I Yelped it for results as you never know exactly what you're going to get when you do a Hotwire booking . I trust the reviews on this site over those of the booking site any day. Larry, Ed to the M and Gourmet were right on target with thier ratings - the Inn at the Opera pretty much rocks. Easy to find (for someone with limited knowledge of San Francisco) the Inn is located in a nice safe, very clean area. You can even avoid the overnight parking fee if the Parking Karmaforce is with you and you happen to score one of the street parking slots. It's located within steps of the stunning Opera house (I'm not even a fan of Opera - but the building is an architectural glory). The Inn itself is beautifully appointed, the staff was exceptionally prompt, curteous & very sincere. One of the things I appreciated most was the fact that they didn't look down their noses at me for being a "Pre Pay" and showing up in hoodie and baseball cap direct from my tow-in surf session (as some staffers at other properties have when I've stayed in the Nob Hill section of SF). My room, though small, was very well appointed and comfy. In fact, I slept too well, I snoozed right through the free breakfast on Sunday (I should have asked what sort of mattress' they use as my bed was heavenly ) About the only suggestion I could make for the room was some sort of bed tray for working on my laptop as there was no desk space. But the wireless worked well, there was a mini fridg, microwave, coffee maker, a plush terry robe, lots of hot water (love my super long hot showers) and plenty of fresh white towels. This property would make for a sweet romantic weekend getaway, a nice place to stay on business, or, as in my case, a great place to call home when mixing business with pleasure - not sure how well it would work for families though due to space constrictions. I will definitely be booking back at the Inn at the Opera for my future stays - even if I can't score the 50% discount by booking online through Hotwire (59 bucks per night - down from $120.00+) .

Yelp
One of our favorite boutique hotels. We spent a week there, got a 7-day Muni pass, and had the run of the city. I believe some of the rooms are small, but we had a lovely one, with a bedroom, bathroom (duh!), and a lounge/kitchenette area. Delightful. Included is a breakfast buffet with fresh fruit & other desirable items. This place has a nice warm, comfortable and welcoming feel to it. I cheerfully recommend it.

Yelp
If you want easy access to public transporation and concert and theater, this is the place. It is across the street from the opera house, a block from the symphony, and Herbst Theater, with museums and theaters within a couple of blocks. BART is four blocks away and multiple buses are on Van Ness. However, it is part timeshare and part hotel. Wyndham took over and operates both parts and has neglected it since its takeover. Apparently it can rent it for enough money that it doesn't feel the need for upkeep or updating. Rooms range from very tiny (a couple each floor) to quite spacious (one bedroom with sitting room, bedroom, second sitting room with pullout sofa, and two baths.) All have minimal kitchenettes. Hot water is scarce, plumbing is old. Our sinks were blocked and the plumber came promptly but was able to unblock only one. The others drained but slowly. Hot water was at a minimum - just enough for a quick shower and hair wash. The kitchenette over the years since Wyndham took over has slowly lost such items as sharp knives, cutting boards and even paper towels (standard items for any timeshare with a kitchenette.) I've owned here for almost 20 years and while I still love it for the location, I'm nostalgic for the days when it was well run. Whenever I visit nowadays, the staff is invariably friendly and helpful, but I used to know them all and now there is never a familiar face - suggesting that once they've learned the job they are off to better paying employment. Somehow I thought Wyndham did better by its properties, but given what they are doing here, I won't stay at another of their properties if I have a choice. The breakfast buffet, though also slowly losing some of its choices, remains a wonderful way to start the day. Definitely a highlight of the hotel.

Yelp
This place is in SF, so it is small, but I thought it was very cute and the staff had amazing customer service!! They were all so sweet and helpful! Beds were clean and we had a heater in the room and used it since we are not used to the cold weather. Bellman was very helpful too with parking our rental. I think its $40 a night to park but its locked up and safe. We would stay here again!

Yelp
Definitely would stay here again - although it's primarily a time-share residence, unbooked rooms are made available for nightly stays. It's very modest, but worth the price. The room was comfortable and quiet, despite being ride on the street side. The reason for the three stars is that the neighborhood is not friendly for all hours coming & going (they actually advised me against walking too much), there's no room service and did not refill my coffee for the coffee maker during my stay. Those last two are probably associated with the fact it's a time share property. A real highlight was Jo the concierge. Very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
We stayed here for a week of vacation. It is convenient to many things. Breakfast is similar to most hotels-- cereals, yogurt, fruit, cheese, etc. on the weekend they add hot items. It was sufficient for us. The front desk is courteous, but not overly friendly. The breakfast servers are friendly and helpful. The one big negative is being hit up by the timeshare sales woman just as we checked in. Very annoying. Rooms are clean, small in this older hotel/ but adequate. We had a nice stay, and I'd come back again.

Yelp
We got a great deal via airbnb. It's a convenient location and we were able to find street parking easily to avoid the valet fee. We had to wait 45 minutes past check-in time for our rooms. Our tiny room smelled like a cigarette and Lysol factory and there was no way to regulate the temperature (no ac, no heat, and no fan)...breakfast was a nice surprise although it's a serve yourself buffet with slightly creepy attendants who won't leave you alone (to get a a tip?). That said, it's clean and cheap. You get what you pay for.

Yelp
I stayed here the night before my sister's wedding and I'm in love with this hotel! After a complimentary upgrade, I had a great dinner in the hotel restaurant that had great service and an amazing meal! The entire hotel staff was super helpful and friendly! There was plenty of street parking and the hotel also offers $35 valet. The continental breakfast had a huge spread and again, the morning staff was great! This will be my new hotel for any future stay-cations!

Yelp
Super cute hotel. It was small, but we didn't care. We only needed a hotel to sleep. Our godparents got us this hotel for 4 night. I honestly loved this place. Complimentary breakfast everyday. The reason why I give this hotel 5 stars is because of the staff of this hotel. THEY ARE FREAKING AMAZING. SUPER NICE, GIVE GREAT RECOMMENDATIONS, VERY HELPFUL. This place also have DVD that you can borrow if you just want to relax for the night. The room had a microwave and sink. Complete with dishes, forks, spoons, and glass cups. We had a lot of leftovers when we went out to eat and having these in the room are a bug plus for us. THANK YOU CEDRIC, ERIKA, AND REGGIE. YOU MADE OUR TRIP AMAZING WITH YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS L. ESPECIALLY TO SMUGGLERS COVE BAR WHICH IS AROUND THE CORNER.

Yelp
Pros: good location, nice complimentary breakfast, free WiFi, free cookies, free apples, friendly service and overall good bang for your buck. Cons: Thin walls, clean sheets every 7 days (ahhhh), can be a noisy location. I stayed here just as the Giants won the world series so it may have been an off time for crowds and noise level but overall a good deal. Also the rooms could definitely use some TLC as there were scuff marks and dings on the walls and bathrooms etc.

Yelp
We love this hotel! Hotel is very European style and charming. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Our room was the biggest room with a separate sitting room, cozy room. Really liked the complimentary breakfast. Will stay again.
