12 LA Coffee Shops Where People Go To Look Cool

"Intelligentsia's Sunset Junction location is where several crowds intersect. On weekdays, this mosaic-tiled cafe in Silver Lake doubles as a workspace for screenwriters and graphic designers suffering from acute caffeine dependency. Set up shop at the counter as you furiously reply to Slack messages and order your third americano of the morning. Come weekends, there's a noticeable shift. Intelligentsia turns into the official sponsor of the Adorable Dog Olympics, where hot people who unironically wear trucker hats show up for cold brew and an excuse to show off Rico, their Shiba Inu. If you have a cute dog, and an Instagram account for them, you'll fit right in." - sylvio martins

LA Streets Where You Can Walk, Eat, & Shop

"This neighborhood has plenty of coffee shops where people rock choppy mullets and work on scripts. Not only is Intelligentsia the most iconic one of the bunch, but they also make very good espresso. Come here to start your day in a sea of vaguely employed locals who woke up and put on designer denim just to show off their shiba inus." - nikko duren, brant cox, sylvio martins

"Intelligentsia is really the quintessential hipster LA coffee shop—and we get why. Tables and bar seats are usually available at all the well-designed locations, and there's a smattering of great baked goods as well as some home goods for sale. At both the Venice and Silver Lake locations, the outlets are as abundant as the man buns. There's also an outpost in Pasadena."

This is one of my favorite cafes to get out of the house and work at. It’s pretty busy in the mornings and not ideal for any working professionals- during that time. Mornings and afternoons tend to be a better spot to grab a coffee with a friend. If you are a freelancer like me and get to determine your hours, the evening 2-6 is prime time. The place calms down, you can find indoor and outdoor seating. I normally bring my headphones but the staff always have good music playing. The Avena Latte is your gal, if you like a little spice and fun to your latte, marry her, run away with this latte all the way to an outdoor seating. The quiche Lorraine and curry pastry are both divine.

Google
Oat milk latte was super smooth, not too sweet, just really balanced. I didn’t plan to stay long but ended up hanging out for a while. The place just has a good vibe, open space, natural light, people working on laptops, music that doesn’t annoy you. First time there and the barista was actually really helpful, asked me what I usually drink and suggested something based on that, which was cool. I wasn’t even looking for a new favorite coffee spot but this one kinda became that without me realizing. Everything just felt right, not just the coffee (which was great), but the whole experience.

Google
The LA Times features Intelligentsia on their “This Must Be Silver Lake” guide and I was soooo excited for it but ultimately left a little disappointed. I got the smoked maple latte, which was not very strong in the coffee or maple directions. The coffee did have light chocolate notes, but it was very light — tasted like sweet milk. The guide said their coffee was strong ;-; I appreciate how they do not charge extra for almond or oat milk even though I opted to whole milk in the end, and the interior is very cute. Service is friendly and speedy.

Google
I love this coffee, but what's up with the fed up attitudes at the register & coffee bar? It's just not necessary. I'm polite and it wasn't busy, I just don't get it... no greeting, not a word said after I order, but otherwise this coffee is tops. Thanks Intelligenstia.

Google
Their homemade syrup was good with the matcha latte. It’s always crowded here so we just got our drinks and went on a walk.

Google
Intelligentsia Coffee in Silver Lake earns a solid 4 stars for service. The baristas are knowledgeable and clearly passionate about their craft, which makes the coffee experience all the better. They’re friendly and helpful, happy to recommend drinks or explain the differences between their various brew methods. That said, the service can be a bit slow during peak hours. With the shop being a popular spot, it gets crowded, and you might end up waiting longer than expected for your coffee. While the staff is attentive, the rush can affect the overall speed of service, especially if you’re in a hurry. Still, the quality of the coffee and the overall vibe make up for the slight delays, and the baristas’ positive attitudes definitely enhance the experience. Even with the occasional wait, it’s worth it for a great cup of coffee in a laid-back, cool space.

Google
Matcha was delicious. Lil on the pricier side but staff seemed very nice and outdoor seating was great, loved the vibe. :) if you go at peak time, seating might be a lil hard.

Google
Great iced latte, great atmosphere. Solid place 🤟

Yelp
You've got to go in and appreciate the fancy gadgets they use to make coffee and try the coffee with the cayenne pepper, it's delicious.

Yelp
I was excited to try this spot when visiting the area, but wasn't terribly impressed by it. I came in and was waiting in line then another person came after me and ordered before I did. I didn't say anything since it wasn't a huge deal but I thought it was weird the barista didn't say anything. Then I was looking to order food but the employee said there was none but I later saw there was food underneath the counter so I got back in line to order the chia pudding - just thought it was odd they didn't mention it earlier. I was going to get a quiche too but it was $16 a slice so I opted not to. I got the avena latte and it was good and I would recommend it for a little kick.

Leslie A.

Yelp
8 dollar coffee....yeah nope. Not worth it. I'd suggest too go elsewhere since they aren't anything special.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
I love that they are open early and the coffee is perfect every time. The best location.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the Vegan coffee cake donut which was easily one of the top 5 donuts I've ever had. Simply amazing. I also tried one of their specialty drinks, the black cat fizz, which was actually pretty terrible. BUT I think that's my own fault and I just don't like the ingredients, and I would easily just try another drink if I came back here. Service was friendly, restroom was clean.
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
The coffee shop is set up in an easy to access place on the block with barstool seats and outdoor seating as well. The service was prompt and my cup of mocha was made well.
google avatar

Yelp
Underneath all the fancy interiors and the hip vibes, this establishment is a legitimate coffee roaster and maker. Thus, they have respect for the art of coffee making. This is evident when tasting the final product. They have a no-nonsense menu, which is refreshing to see, especially in a world of lattes with a thousand different flavors that mask the real espresso taste. That is why they get 5 stars instead of 4. Also, the fancy interiors and hip vibes do make it a more enjoyable experience. I only wish that they had more seating available.
google avatar

Gohar K.

Yelp
First time trying this place out and I wasn't impressed. The iced coffee was ok but not something to go back for. The selection on baked goods were limited and I didn't see any other food items such as sandwiches or toast. Might try other drinks if I'm in the area again and update my review. The ambiance is good, indoor and outdoor seating. Parking is hard to find. Street parking.. and customer service could use some improvement.

Yelp
Thanksgiving 2023. We came here at 3 pm today right before they closed and wanted some coffee. It's pretty minimalistic other than the coffee and tee shirts you can buy.
google avatar

Abigail U.

Yelp
One of the best vanilla iced latte I have ever had. Will be returning to explore more items in their menu. The staff were friendly and service was quick.
google avatar

Yelp
Great quiet spot for delicious coffee! It was cold so we did sit near some heaters they have set up outside. Had a meeting with a co worker here the menu was a bit simple but overall very good experience. I did which they had more indoor seating and a larger variety of lattes. I do love a cappuccino but for flavoring and alternative milks it was extra! The service was good and quick the cashier was very nice and informative as well! Would def come back if I'm in the area or maybe want to check out some other spots.
google avatar

Yelp
Dog friendly coffee spot, very sizable patio, coffee was good Street parking can be trick to find Do see myself coming back to try more coffee from the menu they have
google avatar

Julia F.

Yelp
It's just so good. No notes. Cute interior and seating area, ordering online is easy and my drink is always ready when i arrive. sweetened latte with oat milk was $6.
google avatar

Layla L.

Yelp
I really love the pistachio milk but an extra $1.50 for it is a bit insane. It's probably good because it has like 7g of sugar in it. I can't justify $7.50 for a small regular latte. For that reason I won't be back.

Brody C.

Yelp
Outside seating area is reminiscent of a Venice beach alleyway. In the air, is a sense of hipster mixed with pretentiousness. The coffee is great though. $7.00 croissantis also ridiculous.
google avatar

Hala Hana C.

Yelp
The Avena Latte was delicious! I would recommend it hot! The ambiance of the place was nice, difficult to find street parking.
google avatar

Emely O.

Yelp
I ordered the Apple Cider Chai and at the baristas recommendation I added a bit of avena syrup to it. It was 10/10. A lovely crisp apple flavor with the perfect amount of spice. I believe this is a seasonal menu item, so I'm not sure how long it'll be available, but I recommend it highly if you're not feeling coffee! A popular spot is gonna be crowded. If you can find a chair it's a nice place to read or chat with a friend. If not grab your drink to go, there's some nice shops next door to walk to.
google avatar

Paloma R.

Yelp
Best reliable cup of Joe that will smack the life back into ya 11 out of 10 times. And best baristas in town. Hands down. Love this location, love the staff, love the coffee, love the pastries. 5 stars across the board. Tips: -They're open for psychos like me at 6 AM.
google avatar

Charlotte T.

Yelp
Such a charming spot with a variety of coffee shops nearby, this particular one stands out with its cool decor and great coffee. While it may not offer a wide selection, coffee enthusiasts will appreciate the quality of their beans.

Cedric D.

Yelp
PRETTY ON THE OUTSIDE, BITTER ON THE INSIDE! Found this coffeeshop that had 4 stars and pictures and location looked good. It was great... til I walk and was not greeted or acknowledged by the baristas. Noticed the people after me were treated the COMPLETE OPPOSITE that I was surprised! Ordered an iced vanilla latte and a blueberry muffin. I go to wait for my order and 10 mins pass. I decided to go and ask a barista with black curly hair over the counter about my drink if it was close to being made and she gave me a cold miserable look and said "Ya it should be over there..." Typically they'd call your name OR the drink you ordered but they just expect you to know that it's ready right? anyways... my drink was there and I went to add a lid on it and there was no straws. As I was putting a lid on my drink baristas were staring at me weird. I just left and was fed up. Crumbs all over the table also. Coffee was NOT even "ok" or "mid and straight up bad. Watery, that's I rather go to Starbucks! Overall, baristas need to fix their attitude and customer service cuz it's not it.

Yelp
The memes of $7 latte is true - here, there are a handful of signature lattes that are in that price range, but they are fairly unique compared to a standard latte or coffee drink you will normally get at a regular coffee shop. There is limited indoor seating but plenty of outdoor seating where I relaxed and worked a bit, but with the proximity to the street, it may not be the best spot to take calls or meetings. The signature lattes use Black Cat coffee, which did have some spiced notes that stand out from a standard latte. I personally got the Avena Latte, which is a latte with oat milk, orange peel, ginger, vanilla, cinnamon, and cayenne. There is a slight spiciness to the drink, which amplifies warmth especially helpful in the cooler winters. The combination of flavors just make the drink so good. Even though it was indeed $7, the use of oat milk (usually costs extra $0.50-$1) and the additional complexity of the drink make this quite worthwhile. I do wish the coffee combination itself is mixed more properly as the first few sips were sickeningly sweet so that somewhat destroyed my first impressions and you wouldn't have thought of just mixing away the beautiful latte art before enjoying it. However, the rest of the drink thereafter is pretty delicious.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon cause I was in the area. Got the last chocolate croissant and the macchiato. The macchiato was decent. The chocolate croissant was heavenly. Ate it the next day but it was still flaky and buttery. the chocolate wasn't too sweet and just perfect.
google avatar

Irene P. L.

Yelp
Their coffee is amazing. I had the avena latte. A definite place to stop at when out in theSilverlake/East Hollywood area. Too bad it's far from my home.
google avatar

Yelp
Oat Milk Lattes and Silverlake coffee mates... Definitely a good Day for some caffeine off Sunset Blvd just a skip down from its intersection of Sanborn Ave. My fourth maybe even fifth time at this location and I'm just getting around to sharing my love for this popular beverage haunt. An open air Spanish style building with a walk up lofty patio with tons of built in benches and tables as well as plenty of chairs and tables that fill up fast, but not forever. Amazing health and safety procedures including table upkeep between customers, a steady line flow with minimal waiting and sanitizer. The prices are in that sweet $4 and up range depending on what you seek. This plant-based boy definitely knows to expect a buck more for his speciality drinks.... Sigh... They're always worth the extra 100 pennies. Enjoy coffee, croissants, cookies or whatever your coffee bar/ Cafe goer heart wants. Aside from the usual, they also have some nice merch, fresh bags of coffee blends and pre-packaged things for sale. My personal favorite must are the cold brew, oat milk latte and vegan brownie cookie! Parking in the area is manageable, but if you're local it's a quick stroll and even public transport is super easy with stops on both sides of the street and just a minute down if that. They also have Wi-Fi and a great view of Sunset Blvd Silverlake addition. The staff and service is always a win. Order up!

Yelp
If you're into the hipster aesthetic and want to stop by for some great coffee or tea, this is the perfect stop. Not to mention the staff is absolutely amazing, and super friendly! They have a good selection of either iced teas or hot teas, and of course I had to get my hot tea on a rainy day. Love their herbal tea, and absolutely adore the glassware it comes in. There is something super magical about this place that just makes you want to stay awhile.

SUN K.

Yelp
I just remember I have been to this place a decades ago. And, my memory serves me right, the coffee was not great even then.
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
I really don't like giving one-star reviews, but there really isn't much credit I can give here. To start, it's a pretty small place, so there isn't much seating. We had to take our drinks somewhere else. Many tables were occupied by people using their laptops, but I'm not sure how they could get work done as it wasn't well lit inside and quite loud haha. Additionally, I ordered a peach jasmine green tea via a QR code, and they had to track me down to let me know they were sold out and I'd have to switch to another drink. They ended up being sold out of all green tea, so I got a black tea and it was just like the tea I could make from a tea bag at home. To top it all off, the prices are just too high, so it definitely wasn't worth it. Additionally, they wrote my friend's name in bright orange marker on her drink. It would have been cute for the aesthetic, except it immediately smudged from the condensation from the drink and stained her clothes. :( There just wasn't anything good about the experience here, so unfortunately I will have to leave a low review.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Really nice ambiance and layout! My croissant was perfectly flaky, though I should have asked them to warm it up for me. My avena latte was great too. Just the right amount of cayenne. If I'm paying $7 for a latte it better be like this
google avatar

Garik B.

Yelp
one of the best coffe i tryed here. my favorite strong espresso and americano made with love. from friendly worke rs.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
i didn't try any food, but the vanilla latte was one of the BEST i've ever had. it was sweet and smooth, which can be a tricky combo to achieve when you're working with a thinner milk like almond milk. but they mastered it, and it was sooo yummy. both the indoor and outdoor seating areas were super pretty. it was really busy but the energy was really calm. almost everyone in the chairs were there working or chatting with friends, so that just speaks to the comfortable environment and the ability to spend extended periods of time at this coffee shop.
google avatar

Sarah Z.

Yelp
Intelligenstia is more of a hang out spot than a study cafe. The inside area is very dark and the coffee machines are very loud (they grind their coffee beans a lot haha). There's also only skinny bar type tables inside. If you enjoy studying outside, however, this might be a good spot for you. There's quite a few outside tables. I got their chai latte and it was very sweet! Overall, I think I would enjoy coming here with friends to hang out instead of study!
google avatar

Van L.

Yelp
Good coffee and nice ambiance. Cool place to people watch in Hollywood on a Saturday.
google avatar

Ana M.

Yelp
Ah cant day enough about their great coffee, please do not go to Starbucks and try other coffees to know what it really should taste.
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
This is a classic in LA. Especially this location. Great location in the heart of Silverlake. Cute exterior. Matcha, Chai and coffee lattes were all good. A big pricier than some places.
google avatar

Alfred C.

Yelp
Taste, taste, taste. Love the flavor and aroma. Parking can be really challenging in the area. If you get a chance, try the Avena latte. It has a pleasant blend of sweetness and light Cheyenne kick. If you do metered parking, save yourself the hassle and pay via the parking app.
google avatar

Haylee J.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop. The espresso blend is amazing and isn't too strong, which I love. The ambience is very chill and great to meet with friends. Would absolutely recommend this to everyone in the area
google avatar

Jon F.

Yelp
Came here cause it's apparently one of the go tos coffee shops around here. Got the matcha latte and spent close to $10 including tips. Good hangout spot for a Starbucks alternative.
google avatar

Trinh A.

Yelp
Their vanilla latte taste 100% like Starbucks lol. Nothing special or different about it.
google avatar

Judah Y.

Yelp
You gotta check this place out! My latte was made to perfection and the matcha donut was sooo moist! I enjoyed the art work and vibe of the store. The staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have. It also seems dog friendly, which is a plus!
google avatar

Rudy S.

Yelp
Cierrah, just made my day! I came in and just need some caffeine and she was so thoughtful and kind and accommodating. This is one of my favorite coffee shops.
google avatar

MIchael J.

Yelp
This place will always be home . Great staff . Great coffee . Nice place to hang out . A great all around business . They take it seriously - and I appreciate that . This is one of those places if you drink coffee - and you live here . No one takes a rain check or offers "let's go to ..." it's been a joy watching this place thrive .
google avatar

Laleh A.

Yelp
Paid them a visit last week for the first time after Covid. Absolutely disappointed. Service was a far cry from the individualized way it used to be. The cashier who took the order and charged was also the so-called Barista! No eye contact with any client from any of the staff. It felt more like a YMCA dining hall rather than an upscale coffee house. Overfilling and under filling the cups, ice cubes splashing out of the cups, etc.... Would not recommend. I asked a staff member if the ownership had been changed, no reply!
google avatar

Dynaton T.

Yelp
Amazing coffee. The taste had specific notes that highlighted the blend. The shop had a very modern feel when u came in and the staff was super friendly .

Brandon C.

Yelp
I love this place. Everyone that works there make you feel welcome and Daisy and Annabelle always make the best drinks!!!!
google avatar

Jando S.

Yelp
Despite my unintelligent review from nearly two years ago, I still feel strongly about recommending Intelligentsia to all. They've remained one of the consistent coffee spots in the city and have remained relevant as a premium choice in the caffeine game. This is big deal for me personally, especially since I'm not that into coffee. (#1) At least until COVID hit, this was one of the busiest cafes on this side of town. Lines were a normal thing and the small'ish space got overrun with folks getting their work on (#2) and people enjoying their day one sip at a time. the latte art is lovely and I think the ambiance they've set up is quite good. I'm still not entirely sold on the pastries, which I think in addition to being overpriced are average at best. Service is still good and the folks behind the counter work hard at getting beverages out quickly, especially when a crowd has formed. I appreciate their memorabilia and think they've done a good job with establishing a fun but contemporary interior. I like the fact they've managed to bring in a lot of tables for outdoor dining, but so many folks linger here that sometimes a wait inevitable. _____________ (#1) I'm getting better each day. (#2) Can't blame em, that WiFi is fire.
google avatar

Joyce G.

Yelp
Walked my dog past this place so many times and now I finally stopped to try their coffee and boy was it good! I bought the seasonal latte. A little pricey for my pocket for the amount you get, but I had to try it as least once especially since the line was short at that moment. Due to COVID-19, the tables were unavailable for seating. They don't take cash. Must wear a mask, otherwise no service and social distancing while standing in line highly encouraged.

Emmanuelle B.

Yelp
So rude. Just so so so so rude. Super tall one behind the counter gave me attitude just for asking for my drink in a cup. They dumped it from one to another while staring me down. I asked "long day" to break the tension and they scoffed patronizingly "no". If you can't be bothered to just pour coffee, switch jobs. Geeze. I was a regular here since '08 as it's close to my house but until they train their staff basic customer service , I'll stop coming here.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
I passed by this spot a while ago when walking and thought it had a really beautiful aesthetic so I finally tried it. There's a really pretty outdoor seating area that you walk through to get inside and order. This is an ideal spot for a good conversation over delicious coffee and treats. I got the iced Avena latte with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper on top. My boyfriend got a regular iced latte and we shared a gluten free matcha donut. I didn't know what to expect with the Avena latte but it was so unique and delicious! The flavors and spices worked well together with the espresso and oat milk. They also have some nice merch (I bought two metal straws). Lastly, I have to give a shout-out to the baristas who were super friendly when I asked about gluten free pastries and non-dairy milk alternatives. Overall, sitting outside with lattes and a donut made for a perfect Sunday morning!
google avatar

Jess G.

Yelp
Super rude staff that have really bad attitudes and are mean to customers. The coffee was good but not the rude staff
