7 Places To Get Great Mexican Food In DC

"For a quick lunch and a massive burrito, go to J & J’s Mex-Taqueria. The small spot on Georgia Ave. is the holy grail for customizable tortas and burrito supremes. Park yourself right in front of the restaurant's assembly bar, and watch as heaps of fresh cheese, crisp lettuce, barbacoa, and steak come together to make your meal. That’s when it will dawn on you: Lunch should be the most important meal of the day, and the breakfast propaganda has got to end." - omnia saed

Google
I order the shrimp tacos and here's a tip ask for the shrimp that they use for the taco salads it’s larger. These tacos are filling and delicious. 10/10

Overall it was a cute little place for a quick bite. The tacos were great, but the torta was a little underwhelming (I wish they toasted the bread). I do have one feedback and that is the tables need to be wiped down better — ours was a bit dirty. The service was good, everyone was friendly. Good, chill atmosphere and the restroom was clean. I definitely would want to go back and check out the other items on the menu.

First time trying & I will say everything was pretty good the steak street tacos were my favorite very tender & lovely portion. I also ordered the birra tacos & chips & guac. Will definitely be back.

I've ordered from there twice and have not been disappointed. There food is absolutely delicious and so flavorful! I want to try different dishes, but I'm so tempted to go back to what I had the last two times they were so good. What's even more wonderful is that both dishes are packed with meat.

Google
Don’t let the exterior or somewhat rundown atmosphere dissuade you — this is some of the best Mexican food I’ve had on the East coast so far, especially for the price! I really recommend the smothered burrito or the Burria tacos, they were amazing! Again, it looks kind of sketchy, but it was so good!

Located along Georgia Avenue N.W. in Brightwood is a family-owned restaurant called J & J Mex-Taqueria. With tie-tied floors, the menu is full of tacos, burritos and other Mexican favorites. I went for lunch on a Wednesday in December 2021. Here's my experience: 1) Food: They serve breakfast (sandwiches and tacos), lunch and dinner. If you go for lunch or dinner, you can't go wrong on any of their tacos. A single taco ranges between $3.25 and $4 and comes in corn or flour tortillas. I ordered three chorizo tacos on flour tortillas Mexican style (onions and cilantro) and it filled me up. They were full of flavor so much that they didn't need salsa. (They have medium and hot salsa in case you want it.) 2) Service: It's quick and friendly. Once I downed my three tacos, one of the workers laughed that I must have enjoyed it because I ate them so fast. Yes, it's true. They were soooo good. 3) Space: It's a small space with colorful walls, floor and art on its walls. A public restroom is in the way back. It's kept clean and tables are frequently wiped down. 4) Location: It's on a strip with plenty of other food options, but J&J is one of he best! 5) Parking: It can be harder to find along busy George Avenue NW, but I found easy street parking a few blocks away at 9th and Sheridan Ave NW. Open daily, except for Sunday, it's a worthy contender for a go-to lunch or dinner spot.

Yelp
Found myself in a new neighborhood. As I wandered around I came upon this traditional Mexican food restaurant. The chicken taquitos/flautas were delicious. The chicken and cheese had equal proportion and the tortilla was light and crispy. The cashier was helpful. However the music was a little louder than I enjoy.

Yelp
I ordered delivery and it was amazing. But then I came in person and the back room smelled so bad I can't come back.

Yelp
This place is definitely underrated! When I tell you the authenticity of this food and the flavors!!! you would have been blown away! They had a nice seating area and they had so many different sauces, all the meat was juicy and tender. The tacos were full of meat and I loved all of the accompaniments. Birria Taco was my favorite! It was so cheesy and full of meat! The consommé was super juicy as well and I loved the flavors. I think it was some of the best I had!I really like the tortillas to they were soft and fluffy you could tell they were freshly made. I'm definitely planning to go back. The staff was so nice! After we left, they even gave us a coupon, because we were just talking with them about our experience.

Yelp
Previously had excellent experiences and the food was great! This time, the shrimp tasted like it had been cooked in old oil. Also, the fish taco looked like this....I will not eat this taco.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant with a friendly staff. I ordered steak nachos. They were terrible. The bits of steak were dry, hard, and tasteless. The platter tasted like burnt chips with beans and congealed cheese. Watery salsas were served on the side. Not sure I'd risk spending my money here again.

Yelp
Service was lovely, the place was meh on cleanliness but the food was honestly subpar and not exactly inexpensive as other reviewers suggested. I had the carne asada and the meat was clearly not marinated for very long (if at all). There was very little flavor to it and it was a small quantity. It was 1/4 meat and 3/4 onions (not even a single bell pepper). The side of rice and beans was also lacking in flavor but the fried plantains were tasty... though they only gave me 5 slices. I was also disappointed by the portion to price ratio for the chips and salsa. I had high hopes for this venue and was sincerely disappointed. Though I will say the woman at the register was lovely.

Yelp
Ordered delivery. Food is okay. Nothing special. Steak tacos were somewhat flavorful but a bit dry. Chicken tacos were not flavorful and dry. The chicken quesadilla was not great. The plantains were fine.

Yelp
J & J taqueria is really a neighborhood gem. Their quality has not fallen due to the pandemic and they've maintained serving delicious food. When they first opened a few years ago, their menu was rather small only serving the basics. But through the years, they've expanded their menu and quality, which is impressive. Most places go down in quality but i see they've worked to continually improve. Their tacos are delicious and authentic. I've had the chicken, beef, and carnitas tacos, all yummy. I've also gotten the flautas, and the bistec a caballo (steak with fried eggs beans and rice). Delicious. I recently got the Birria tacos this past weekend, which they've only added within the last year I think, and they were also good. It comes with three Birria tacos and the dipping sauce. Cheesy and beefy, mmmmm. They also serve breakfast all day with traditional Mexican breakfast offerings! Overall, J & J is a great neighborhood spot with delicious food and consistently friendly service.

Yelp
We had eaten here previously and didn't have the best experience but wanted to try it again! Boy, am I glad we did! The food the 2nd time around was great!! We ordered the mixed fajitas with refried beans, tacos (shrimp, Al pastor and chorizo, and nachos). Everything arrived well put together and still warm! The tacos were all delicious but my favorite would have to be the chorizo tacos. The flavor was spot on!! The fajitas were a hit too! The beef could use just a tad more seasoning but the chicken and shrimp totally make up for that! Am confident that we will continue to order from J and J!

Yelp
I am home sick and just needed something tasty as comfort food. I had been craving nachos and looked up options for delivery. Lo and behold, J & J has nachos that don't break the bank and are tasty. I'm a fan of keeping simple food simple but they managed to do that while making very tasty nachos. It also included three sauces which kicked up the flavor. The delivery arrived super quick and was accurate so 10/10 for service.

Yelp
DoorDash order of the J & J Chicken Salad & the BLT. The salad looked as though it was thrown together right after washing the lettuce which caused a puddle of water to be at the bottom: making the whole salad mushy and wet. There were also random ingredients added that were not in the description like jalapeños and sautéed onions. The BLT states it comes with fries but you're given home fries instead. The bacon on the BLT was SUPER fatty and barely cooked and the white bread wasn't toasted thoroughly. Overall, I would not recommend either dish and doubt I will order from them again.

Yelp
I had driven past this restaurant a few times in the past but I never really had the opportunity to come and see what they have to offer. This place is tucked away in a small shopping center and it's easy to miss if you're not looking for it. The inside has a unique authentic Mexican ambiance with a wild looking floor. My guess is that there are about 12 tables with chairs within the dining room. I came in to order my meal to go and I'm just waiting for it to be prepared. I went for the steak fajita combo meal that included two hard boiled eggs. I chose the Cajun fries and black beans for the two sides. The combo itself was less than $20 which I think is well worth the price especially considering the fact that it's authentic Mexican food. I know the difference! I will report back to let you know if I can taste the difference!

Yelp
What a delightful surprise... my daughter read that this place was listed in the top four cheap Latino restaurants in DC and boy somebody is right. There are many choices and good vegetarian options. The staff is very nice and helpful. I can't wait to go back and try a sandwich, the bread looks so delicious

Yelp
Washington D.C. has been really disappointing in the Mexican food category. We only tried this place because we were hoping to picnic over at Rock Creek Park and this place is about a mile away. The name "J & J" doesn't inspire much confidence in the quality of the food (unless it's a BBQ shack or a fish joint), but the reviews looked good, so we decided to give it a try. I'm so glad we did. The tacos and burritos are the best I've had in DC. The ingredients are blended perfectly in proportion and distribution. Some Mexican restaurants follow the Chipotle-method of burrito making where each ingredient is separated in a way that each bite is a different ingredient. Or they go to the other extreme where everything just tastes like a mashup of ingredients. J & J was spot on, allowing everything to maintain it's flavor integrity, but mixing flavors for a fantastic taste experience. And although I didn't try their quesadillas, they looked great (the grill on a quesadilla tells you a lot about the texture). The service was DC-solid-enough. Not especially friendly, but courteous. The restaurant is line-style, which usually allows for quicker preparation. It didn't help. Speed for not J & J's strength. It took about 7 to 10 minutes to get our food. All in all, it is probably the best takeout Mexican food I've had in DC. It'd definitely recommend giving them a go.

Yelp
I've been coming here since this restaurant opened. Their tacos de lengua and shrimp tacos (Mexican style) , delicious. This is the main spot I get tacos from, whenever I'm in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy! Good Mexican food (the chicken tacos are my fave!) large portions, and reasonable prices. They serve breakfast too!
google avatar

Tiana S.

Yelp
I really had the taste for birria tacos and this hit the spot! The tacos were very tasty, well seasoned, and not skimpy on the meat. I didn't even get to take a picture because the food was so delicious. I will definitely be ordering from them again. Also, I got the chips and salsa. The salsa was so delicious. I really can't wait to explore different foods on the menu.
google avatar

Looking Out For The City ..

Yelp
The food had an interesting taste from other Mexican food I have had. The salsas were not with the normal pico de gallo added. Loved the chicken burrito with cheese on the tortilla. Reminded me of an enchilada.
google avatar

Gabi V.

Yelp
Love trying old and small hole-in-the-wall places where the food speaks all the wonderful colors/decor into the place. Stopped by and wasn't disappointed with the quality of the seasoned steak taco and yummy rice and beans (which didn't taste like dirty water). They have all the condiments and sauces available. Would definitely come back again for a DC taco fix and def try something else. also there is a Mexican and American way for how you want your tacos. ALWAYS CHOOSE MEXICAN. Seating can kind of suck if it's busy, but it works.
google avatar

Breanne R.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this place has so many stars. The Chicken in my taco salad bowl was fatty and the beans were unseasoned. Overall meal was extremely underwhelming. My friend said her torta had no flavor at all. J&J is yet another over hyped place that only looks good on instagram.
google avatar

Dana M.

Yelp
This place has seriously delicious tacos. I got one steak, one carnitas, and one barbacoa and they were all delicious, but my favorite was the barbacoa! They have the option for flour tortillas, corn, or crunchy and three different sauces (a white, green, and red). So yummy!
google avatar

Clayton R.

Yelp
As a new member of this neighborhood, this was tops on my list and my first culinary stop.....and I gotta say, I think I made the right choice! I thought I would never find better tacos than the ones I had in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico....but I found em, and they're right here in DC! I had a Carnitas, Pastor and Barbacoa taco on corn tortilla, Mexican style with a side of beans and rice. The Pastor and Barbacoa were simply otherworldly, like for reals the best I've ever had. The carnitas was wayyyyy above average as well. Beans were delish....rice was honestly the only thing that could've been better (little clumpy and dry). Homemade hot sauces set it all off - my fave was the verde-medium but the blanco-mild was really good too. I tasted hot but felt there was enough flavor to justify the long term heat in my mouf! Get here - try them out - you will never go back to Taco Bell again!!!!
google avatar

Patrice L.

Yelp
I was just in the neighborhood and decided to check out places close by to eat. I saw they had a high rating and decided to check out the menu. I've been on a birria taco kick and chose that. They were the best three I've had since I've starting trying them out. Right down to the fresh cucumbers on the side. I will definitely make the trip back down to DC to get again.
google avatar

Rayven W.

Yelp
These tacos were AMAZING. We ordered on Uber eats and the $14 order came with a side of consome and three STUFFED quesobirria tacos. Best I've had in the city, better than cielo rojo and little miner. Excited to try more of the menu soon!
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
I don't know what else I'd get for lunch in this area, but here's something decent. It's just cheap carryout, but as such places go, they've got some nice vegetarian options. You can customize what you want on a sandwich, and you've got a decent variety of other choices. Between the beans in my burrito and the avocado in my sandwich, I got two meals for somewhere around $10. Basic flavors, but certainly good enough at that price. Not only to they take Eat24 orders, but they have a sign for where you pick them up, and they were quite thorough in making sure I had sauces and such. It seemed like a 3.5 star place to me, but what the heck.
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Best Mexican food in the city and the staff is awesome. We got chips/guacamole, nacho, burrito, taco (chicken and steak), quesadilla. Everything was amazing. No frills, done perfectly, so good. You have to try it!

Josue M.

Yelp
Waaaaayyy over priced. Don't come here, there are way better taco places than this cause imagine paying 23 bucks for 3 birras tacos
google avatar

Bell Y.

Yelp
Cute family joint with lots of seating. Delicious breakfast burrito and lengua tacos. Everything as made fresh and super-quickly right before our eyes. The horchata was a bit sweet for our taste but definitely took the bite off the delicious hot sauces.

Yelp
Traditional Yelp disclaimer that I am a Californian, so you can trust me on Mexican food. Really good local place for Mexican fast food. Been there twice now (my usual plan before reviewing). Both times got an assortment of tacos and one burrito supreme for a crowd. Cost to feed 4-5 (or 3 and have a bit leftover) is about $40. The first time I got a carnitas burrito, and split it with my son. Omg the carnitas is their best item, hands down. Really excellent crispy little pieces of pork. A lot of times carnitas can be kind of dry and stringy. Not here, tastes like they did it in the backyard, and I mean that in a good way. This time Sprossling ordered the chicken burrito supreme, and said it was "good" and "I'm full." Just had the ground beef taco, and a shrimp taco, both good. I haven't had a bad taco yet and I have now tried all of them except lengua and sausage (7/9). Only downgrade is that the tortillas are that half corn half flour I find so prevalent on the east coast. Flaccid, meh. We also added guacamole both times, which is a bit on the lemony side for my taste but I can live with it. The chips are okay, not great. All in all a really great addition to the Georgia Avenue corridor between Piney Branch and Military Road. Go, get some grub, keep them in business...do it for me!

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Don't know how the food tastes because they never delivered and took your money.

Yelp
Excellent food Great Price Prompt service and delivery of food Tacos....fish and steak Both magnificent And Brenda's customer service is second to none

Yelp
I'm so pissed had hair all in my food!! I'm just so disappointed, because at one point your food was so good!! This is just nasty though and I can't explain in words just don't go here!!
google avatar

Tykisha T.

Yelp
Nice staff, Came here a few time during lunch break! The place looks clean and I love that they off a veggie menu! I got a hard and soft veggie taco and it was so good! I decided to give they chips a try, they full a white paper bag almost to the top with chips! The sauce is good, but the chips was disgusting! Will go back, but No chips Update: 11/21/2016 I have been back twice since this review and my food has been burnt! This is my last time! How you burn nachos?? Guess they have a new cook!
google avatar

Haman B.

Yelp
Wow. This just took first place on my list of Taqueria's in DC ! Didn't take any picture because we ate so fast! All our tacos were awesome so I can't really rank. But definitely the steak taco and the fish taco.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Decided to check this place out for take out and was excited due to the reviews I saw on Yelp but I was a bit disappointed. I ordered the fajitas with beef and shrimp and only got beef, no shrimp. And the beef that I did get was very chewy and fatty. There were many pieces I couldn't eat. The yucca fries were good and the rice and beans were pretty standard. I would probably give this place another try but order something else.

Yelp
When I am in the vicinity of Georgia Ave. on the border of DC/Silver Spring and looking for food, I usually head north into Silver Spring or East into Takoma Park. This is not where I might be location-wise... However, it's a good idea now that I have been here. It's undergone a name change, so look for Taqueria in the name now. If not for Taheerah and John, I definitely would not have gone here. It's in the middle of a string of stores that look like they have seen their heydays, and quite a long time ago. Why is this place good? It's open until 10.00 pm, which is perfect - early enough to not have me worried to get here alone, and late enough to be past dinner but when I know I need more food but don't want to cook. Also, there is a good amount of seating, but really... I like this place because I can Eat24 order from this place and have the order ready when I arrive. Wow. That's awesome for those evenings when I haven't eaten dinner until 9.45 pm.... Why else is it good? Real cooking with real ingredients. It's not 5-stars glamorous haute cuisine... but, it's fresh, home-style (in my opinion), good cooking. The ingredients for veggie tacos can get boring, but here, it works out just fine. Fresh avocados, pico de gallo, lettuce and beans, pretty good. Restaurant style tortilla chips, yum. Spinach tacos - ok, count me in! Also, if you prefer enchiladas, rice/burrito bowls, or burritos, you're good. If you ask me to compare this place to my fav go to taquerias, I would not say 4 stars, probably just 3, but, because of the location, this place earns 4 stars for doing what they do in this location. It's kind of a food desert for me in this part of DC... nothing piques my interest in this area AT ALL. This place - I would go back. Again, nothing fancy or hoity toity, but it delivers. Not too greasy, fresh, not a hole in the wall, filling, fair prices, and nice people. Yum.

John S.

Yelp
I decided to try this place in part because of their Groupon and also the reviews. I admit I left wondering where the 5 star reviews came from. I ordered five different types of tacos and my family and I were not impressed. We had to throw out many of them. One daughter noted her tacos were pretty dry - she could only eat one of the two. The shrimp and fish seemed cooked in some type of batter as opposed to being really fresh. I had hoped to find a go to taco place but sadly I didn't.

Christian G.

Yelp
Worst tacos I've ever had they have no flavor and the business needs to go under new management the employees are fine but it's the companies fault for letting them service this crap. Smh worse 30$ I ever spent.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place! Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in town because the tacos taste so fresh and the meats are flavored so well. I have to resist the urge to order the shrimp tacos every other day, it's that good! The guacamole and Cajun fries are also really good.

Yelp
Excellent cheap Mexican food. Like really cheap. Solid steak burrito, and one of the rare places with hardshell tacos. Pro tip 1: careful with meats; a lot of them have up charging Pro tip 2: a hardshell to go, turns into a softshell to go

Yelp
I was walking to get lunch at another place, and I saw the sign for a vegetarian burrito, and it wasn't expensive. As many times as I walk pass this place, I never noticed it until yesterday. When I walked in, I noticed that the place had minimal decorations, and it was typical carryout with a few tables and chairs. The cashier was very pleasant, and the few customers who were there were lively, but not in a bad way. I was able to see that the customers were regulars. It was like everyone was family. Even the two cooks were sweethearts. There were lots of vegetarian items on the menu including spinach taco Usually, I would have to ask the cashiers or cooks to make me a veggie taco, and if there was a language barrier, then I would be "out-of-luck". Well, it wasn't the case here. I was able to order anything in a vegetarian version including the sandwich. The gentlemen before order chicken nachos. They looked tasty, so I ordered veggie nachos with guacamole, which wasn't extra like some places. YAY!!!!! I am in love already! I was doing a "to-go" order, but the cashier warned me that the nachos can get a little soggy, so I stayed and ate it there. Everything was nice and fresh, The nachos were crispy like I like them, and the guacamole was great. I will definitely make this my spot especially when I have long hours at work.

Yelp
Omg!!!!! The best Mexican food I've had so far in life. I had chicken taco and the bomb burrito supreme with steak. The meat is so good.

Yelp
We were in the mood for tacos so we decided to check this place out. If you're looking for a taco or two this place is suitable but if you want five or so it can get costly at an average of $3 a taco... no sides. Entrees such as quesadillas or burritos are one price which does NOT include the meat of choice. By the time you've added everything up you may as well had gone to a restaurant. Food was good... not enough to return.

Yelp
Love this place! Very reasonably priced and delicious. I have had the torta, burrito, nachos, enchiladas and cheese fries and all of them have been superb. They also make their own sauces and the green sauce with the white sauce is the move. The lengua is amazing!

Yelp
Asked for separate containers. To prevent sogginess. They canceled the order. That just shows me that they do not accommodate nor, go above & beyond for their customers. Especially new ones. I just wanted to try something new. The Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood was relocated or lease ran up. Found this place smh. Asking for separate containers (3) meat, dressings/toppings, and shells . Makes sense when dealing with a delivery. I'm sure if a customer dining inside was to suggest or request this... it would had been no problem. So why with a delivery. Lost a 20 something sale/ repeat customer for 30 cents of plastic
