Farm-to-table comfort food, steaks, tacos, salads, cocktails

"The Deal: Half off all appetizers, $1 off all drinks There are multiple locations of the crowd-pleasing Jack Allen’s Kitchen in the Austin area (Anderson Lane, Oak Hill, Round Rock, and Cedar Park), and they all do half-off appetizers during happy hour, which is a very good deal. Whether it’s a late lunch or early dinner, you can make a solid meal out of apps like smashed guacamole, chicken nachitos, and smoked barbacoa quesadillas." - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion
"This Austin mini-chain’s Round Rock outpost is the opposite of trendy in the best ways, serving an expansive menu of farm-to-table Texas comfort food like carne guisada skillets, apple bourbon pecan cobbler, and several chicken fried proteins in a twinkling, all-wood interior. Their enormous South Texas platters are more than enough for two people to share. Add the surprisingly fresh cocktails (we like the Texas Peach made with fresh peach puree, grapefruit liqueur, and peach bitters) for a perfect date night." - clara wang, nicolai mccrary

"Jack Gilmore’s chicken-fried steak could not be contained to just Austin proper, so Round Rock gets to enjoy his Texas comfort fare, including steaks, pimento cheese, tacos, enormous salads, and generous cocktails. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are indoor and outdoor dine-in services." - Darcie Duttweiler
"Jack Allen’s Kitchen is a really comfortable restaurant, with sparkly lights inside, big windows, and lots of kitschy art on the walls. They serve comfort food like barbacoa stackers and pork tacos, there's a whole section called “Chicken Fried Anything," and they bring a bunch of dishes out in mason jars. The restaurant has been around for a few years and there are a few locations around town, so it’s easy enough to get a reservation, and everyone will feel taken care of, which you can take credit for instead of the restaurant to win some points. They also have a great Happy Hour." - Adele Hazan
