Where to Find Terrific Thai Food in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This Linda Vista spot serves a good selection of street food fare like chicken satay and garlic pork spareribs. While customers will find the usual Thai dishes like curries and noodle dishes, one dish that separates this place from other Thai restaurants is steamed chicken rice. The homestyle comfort of slow-poached chicken and fragrant chicken-ginger rice may look unimpressive but the accompanying chicken broth makes it a standout menu item." - Helen I. Hwang

Google
Really good price for its value. Great tasting food too! We got the duck noodle soup, chicken lettuce wrap, and Kao Mun Gai Tod, all tasted fantastic. Very tender duck and fried chicken.

Google
Super disappointed. Left SeaWorld with the kids and looked up restaurants. Found this and thought what great comfort, culturally, can't go wrong with street food. Ordered 2 pad see eu and there's literally no char on the noodles, they're soggy, and it only came with Chinese broccoli and the protein we selected (one shrimp and one beef). Paid $15/each for these and could have made better at home. They also didn't have Sriracha or the chili paste that pairs really comfortingly. I'm not going back and leaving a review to help others save their money and hopefully gain a better experience

Went here today for the first time and had a really great experience overall. The cashier was super kind, helpful, and clearly knowledgeable about the menu. I ordered the Pad Thai with tofu and shrimp, while my friend got the chicken curry, and we both had Thai tea. The food was absolutely delicious — full of flavor and freshly made. There was a small hiccup where they forgot to add the shrimp to my dish, but the cashier immediately apologized. I was really hungry, so I asked them to just bring the shrimp when it was ready. Unfortunately, when it arrived, the shrimp was bland and underwhelming. But here's where the service really stood out — the cashier noticed I wasn’t satisfied and went above and beyond to make things right. He had the kitchen make a fresh batch for me to take home, without me even asking. That kind of customer care is rare and truly appreciated. I’ll definitely be going back — the food was great, and the service made it even better. My only suggestion would be to improve the Thai tea; it could use a bit more richness and flavor.

Google
duck noolde soup was sweet, lots of meat and veggie. steamed chicken was Ok. acceptable as an work day lunch

Google
It took over 20 minutes from placing the order to receiving the food. This doesn’t look like freshly made food at all. It seems like it had been sitting out for a long time—the noodles were clumped together and very hard, impossible to separate. It even tasted spoiled.

Google
A small Thai spot with delicious flavorful food. Located in a strip mall in Linda Vista, this unassuming little Thai spot has huge balanced flavors. The interior is clean with an industrial design that feels a bit haphazard. The staff is friendly. The food came out fast and hot. The noodles were still steaming. The flavors are deep, rich, and yet still balanced. Some of the best Pad Thai I have ever had. The prices are good considering the portions are quite large. This place will satisfy any Thai cravings you might have. Well worth a visit!

Google
I had the Tom Kha Soup with shrimp. It was very good The broth was sweet but not too sweet just like it should be. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. Fast and friendly service and reasonable prices.

Google
We were tired and hungry, so we approached this Thai restaurant. The guy at the bar who ordered dishes was quite patient. When faced with the names of dishes we didn't understand, he would explain to us what they were. The appetizers were fried and salty, too salty and hard. The soup didn't taste good. All the meat was very salty. What's wrong with the chef? All tableware is disposable, which is not environmentally friendly. The food is poor and the chef is very poor. It tastes worse than the meals I cook myself. But I still gave tips ,when I was in this kind of fast food.

Yelp
J&T's is a solid thai food spot that has all the basic thai dishes & drinks, cafe style. You order at the counter & sit anywhere you'd like. I have tried their pad thai / pad kee mao / drunken noodles , along with their yellow curry , steamed veggies and both thai tea / milk tea with pearls. They've never disappointed and as a grad student up the hill, this place is always my go-to for nearby off campus eats. Prices are reasonable -- although I remember them being like under $10 pre pandemic. Portion sizes are good for what you get, and service is great. Parking sucks in this plaza as it isn't the most organized, so I'd recommend grab & go if possible.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to this meal, but the experience left me with nothing but disappointment. I ordered Pad See Ew with beef. While my friends got their food, I waited over 25 minute no updates, no acknowledgment. I finally asked and was casually told they ran out of beef. Not even an apology. No one communicated until I had to chase them down. I stayed calm and accepted a substitute, but seriously... it's not that hard to let someone know. Then it got worse we ordered wings, and they completely forgot. Not delayed. Just never put in. Again, no ownership from the staff. My fiancé's "spicy" noodle soup? Absolutely flavorless. Tasted like boiled water and plain meat. No spice, no seasoning nothing. And while waiting, I couldn't help but notice the kitchen didn't look clean at all. From where we were sitting, it looked unorganized and unsanitary. Frankly, it felt like a place that needs a health inspection. I did end up eating my food, but the whole vibe was off. The staff seemed disinterested, the service was messy, and no one cared to make anything right. There are better Thai restaurants with cleaner kitchens and staff who actually care. Would not recommend.

Yelp
I ordered one green curry with extra chicken on the clover app. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly young man who handed me my food which was ready within 15 min, as promised. Upon opening my to go order, I noticed that my green curry was not green at all and looked more beige which was concerning. My first taste led me to a level 1 spice (the app didn't ask), which was fine. Unfortunately, the green curry taste was not there. Nor was there any hint of coconut milk either. Did they use any at all or was it thickened with corn starch like a gravy. Absent was also any lime flavor, bamboo shoots, eggplant and Thai basil. This item was a miss for me and I probably won't be back. I may be spoiled by my local Thai restaurant near my home but, if you are going to make Thai food, it should have all the flavors in the dishes.

Yelp
This is my go to Thai spot in San Diego. Nothing compares. I recommend the spicy soup either chicken, so good. Also the bbq pork app is bomb. Another go to is the broasted chicken, it comes with a side of soup which always comes in handy, but not needed. Get the mango ice tea. With our without boba. Service is always good but expect a decent wait. Trust me you'll be satisfied with your choice if you go here!

Yelp
Heard really good things about this place & after an intense leg day all I wanted was meat & rice. This did not disappoint. Simple & to the point & packed with flavor! It was t super busy when we went which is kind of nice. Casual and peaceful. I'd like to go back and try more because the other food I saw coming out looked realllllly good!

Yelp
I've had J&T from time to time and but now thought to make a review for them! Their ordering system is always easy and efficient. Lots of people come for takeout as they created a separate line for pick up orders. It is pretty casual as if you choose to dine in you will order upfront and receive a table number where they will bring the food out to you. My only peeve about here is that the tables need some cleaning as I did have to wipe down the tables after something got on my shirt. Other than that, the food is great and is so much better fresh! I recommend their chicken wings! A little bit of miscommunication happened as we ordered two orders instead of one, but we chose to just keep the order anyway because it was so good. The chicken is a little greasy, but it turns out super crunchy. Their Pad Thai is basic I admit but a classic! It's my favorite thing to order! The portion is generous, and the sticky chewy noodles are the right texture every single time! Their Thai Tea is pretty good too, it's not too milky and has that vibrant orange color from the steeped tea leaves. This is a local favorite spot of mine in Linda Vista for Thai food and it's always consistent with the portions and flavor!

Yelp
Really liked this place! My friends had both been here before but this was my first time. It's a great super casual Thai place. Parking was easy but it's not a very big lot. Staff was super nice and the food was great. I'm only taking a star off because they got my friend's order wrong (but they corrected it) and his soup came out waaaay later than the rest of our food. I'll definitely be back again!

Yelp
Food was awesome and filling. Service top notch as always. We always forget to sit in the back if you want avoid the front door take out rush, but a casual atmosphere.

Yelp
Thai food, needs no introduction. My wife found this place on Yelp and we were looking for a new Thai place to try. The restaurant is located a few streets down the hill from USD and is located in a small strip mall with very limited and tight parking. It wasn't too busy when we went in the evening. You order at the counter and then they call you to pick up when it's ready. There are a few tables in the front of the restaurant and a few in the back down a hallway. The tables were kinda dirty and the restaurant could have been more clean. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We ordered pad Thai and pad kee mao. Both were good enough, but it was pretty basic and underwhelming for the price. We also ordered Thai tea which was the most watered down Thai tea I've ever had in my life. It was like they took one standard drink and mixed half of it with water to make a full drink. Very disappointing. There are better options in San Diego, if you're willing to drive a bit. We will not be coming back.

Yelp
The food is well priced, well portioned and tasty. A good place to eat with a nice atmosphere, there's a bit of moody lighting and really nice large wooden tables. It's a bit small, but also very atmospheric. The workers were very nice, but unfortunately got a couple of basics wrong with my order, although they did seem a bit busy at the time so that was understandable.

Yelp
Spicy basil chicken level 6 with a side or veggies instead of rice. Veggies were flavorless but not overcooked. Would order rice next time. Suggestion to store - provide utensils with to go orders.

Yelp
Food was delicious and delicate. Not your average blow your palette Thai but really thoughtful ingredients and cooking execution. I Loved the soups and you know what they say if you can make soup .... You can cook. I loved the steam chicken it was very authentic and something I have never had before.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is great. We always order take out, its easy to order through their own website. BB usually gets the drunken noodles with beef, and yellow or green curry with chicken. I always get the hainan chicken rice. They have a serve yourself bar that has red chilies in fish sauce, and green chilis in vinegar. No frills; just good food at a reasonable price that is consistent. Parking lot is a little small and can get busy during peak hours. Make sure to hit up Rose Donuts which is a couple of stores down in the same parking lot for dessert!

Yelp
This place was OK. I didn't think it was that amazing. The food was good, but I wasn't super impressed by the level of attention to detail pertaining the fried rice and I love fried rice.

Yelp
Unexpected Thai Treasure in San Diego! We were wandering around on vacation when we stumbled across J&T Thai Street Food, and let me tell you--it was a happy accident. Totally unsure of what to get, we asked the cashier for their personal recs and just went with it. Spoiler alert: they did not steer us wrong. We ended up with the yellow chicken curry, shrimp pad see eu, BBQ pork plate, plus some Thai teas and a green tea for good measure. The food came out fast (bless), the tables were clean, and the staff were super friendly--always a win. Now for the breakdown: * The yellow chicken curry? Solid, classic, comforting. You really can't go wrong. * The BBQ pork? Tasty and flavorful. * But the star of the show for me? That shrimp pad see eu. The noodles were so delicate and flavorful--I could eat a whole second plate if my stomach would allow it. Only teeny tiny critique: I wish the meat portions were a little more generous--but hey, I work in the food industry, so I get it. Portion control is a thing, and margins are tight. Drinks were delicious too. If you're looking for quick, satisfying Thai food that hits the spot, this is your place. Glad we found it--and if we're ever back in San Diego, we're definitely coming again!

Kathleen N.

Yelp
Went here for the first time. Got their Thai coffee and beef noodle soup. The coffee was disappointing, very water down. Their beef noodle soup was not worth the price, small portion and lack of meat. Noodle texture was meh, nothing special.

Yelp
I really like this place. It's good simple simple comfort food. They don't have a very diverse menu, but the food they do have is really well done. Service was quick and friendly? Ambience leaves a bit to be desired, but they have plenty of seating in the back so it's not bad.

Yelp
GREAT hidden gem Thai restaurant in an unsuspecting parking lot near Hotel circle. We walked in on a Saturday night later.. like 7:30? and there was no line. The restaurant is small inside, with 5-6 tables for seating. We opted to take our food to go, and it was QUICK. There is a station with utensils, red pepper, takeout boxes, napkins, etc. which makes it so easy, even for dining in. We ordered the yellow curry and pad Thai to share, and the portions were enough for a few meals. The curry was very flavorful and not watery at all. Will be back each time I'm in San Diego I'm sure!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious and authentic Thai food - Fast and affordable! Service was quick and staff were very friendly. Ambiance is casual with ample seatings in the front and back rooms. Parking can be challenging so come early. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday afternoon after seeing not too bad reviews. It's in a busy plaza and parking is pretty tough here with all the businesses in the park. Walked up to the counter and there is a QR code menu, a menu hanging from the back wall (which only has a quarter of their options) and a menu on the counter with all the options. There is a spice level from 1 to 10. We ordered 7s for our plates and was warned that it's super spicy but we found it to be more like a 5 spice level. We are from the Caribbean and was a bit disappointed on it. The Pad See Eu with beef with a spice level of 7, was delicious. The Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodle) with chicken which was suggested to us was not that great. It felt like it was missing something. I would say it needed maybe some peanuts or additional veggies or some sauce to take it up a notch. The chicken wings were pretty good. Pipping hot. 5 stars for them and the pad see eu. The ambience was pretty boring. White walls. Picnic bench type seating. There was a back area as well. Not a ton of photos up. Probably meant to be a quick lunch spot or a grab and go spot. 3 stars because half the food was decent but the place lacked a good vibe and the employees were barely okay. Not warm but not necessarily cold and distant.

Yelp
Anytime my friends tell me they never had Thai food. I bring them to this spot. Now they are a huge fan of Thai food. This is my go to spot anytime I go out with friends. My favorite menu items are pad thai and drunk noodle. My comfort food would be curry with extra potatoes. Plenty of seating indoors and decent parking. There's also a boba spot nearby. But J&T offers their own boba as well. Really delicious food!

Yelp
EXCELLENT! Got in to San Diego around 8:15 and was hungry. I was by myself and wanted something that was delicious. Looked at the closest spot to my hotel and this gem popped up on Yelp! The atmosphere was sleek and clean. Ordering was quick and the young, tall, Asian man who took my order was super patient and helpful. The chicken lettuce cups shouted out to me but I wanted something else. Asked him what he would suggest (and said I'm weak to spice)...BBQ pork and rice! So that's what I had. The lettuce cups would have been enough for dinner alone. They were so yummy, I gobbled them up immediately! Great balance of textures and flavors. At first, I was sad that there wasn't any sweet sauce cups on the side (like plum sauce that you get at Chinese restaurants), but after the first bite, it was clear that it didn't need anything to season the dish. The lettuce cups were cut into nice circles not too small, rather perfectly-sized for the spoonful of chicken, water chestnuts, and whatever else was in it. A slight hint of sweet to the bold savory flavor--perfectly balanced. Then I tried the BBQ pork! Again, I was expecting something more like char siu, but no. Thinly sliced pieces of pork marinated in a savory sauce and then grilled. The meat was a little salty, but a perfect compliment to a bite of the fluffy Asian rice. Also, the pork comes with a slice cucumbers and an awesome cup of citrusy/sweet & sour type sauce. The sauce was sooo delicious and really complimented the cucumbers which was a nice and refreshing treat to the dish overall. I am thankful to all you Yelpers for the good reviews. I don't think I would have tried this place in a strip mall looking fairly minimalistic. Thanks, tall Asian guy who took my order and gave me a great recommendation! I'll be telling my San Diego colleagues to check this place out if they are in the area. U might just come back for some boba or Thai iced tea later this weekend! Sorry, no photos--I was too hungry and it was too delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This has to be one of the most delicious thai spots I've been to. The chicken pad thai, chicken yellow curry (with a big amount of rice), and chicken satay were all so flavorful and served in big portions. The thai tea wasn't the best I've had, but still solid. Lots of seating available - there is an area by the front counter as well as tables in the back where the restrooms are also located.
google avatar

Michan C.

Yelp
Why do Thai places in SD always mess up my orders. And every other time I give this place another change they mess up my order. I tried their Pad Kee Mao for the first time & asked for only tofu & Basil So why did they put onions in it? Amd like so many other places the noodles are saturated in sauce & it just ends up tasting too much like a soy fish sauce They are friendly enough & this time I did check the side of rice before I drive away (b/c in the past they gave me brown instead of white rice) This place is so hit or miss...I'm annoyed.
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
I walked over from Old Town given the reviews. I like the elevated fast casual format. The French jazz and decor was great. I also like the serve yourself chiles and water. The pad khee mao (extra veggies) and wings were both solid, crazy temp hot and quick.
google avatar

Kristie L.

Yelp
I've been to this location a few times and had it delivered a few times as well and they are consistently delicious. The chicken and rice is so simple yet so flavorful. The pork appetizers are my favorite. I tried the egg rolls and they are basic veggie ones, I'd pass next time. The Tom kha was good but on the sweet side for me so I'll pass on that too. But the pad see ew was so yummy. I love that their version is heavy on the veggies and not just noodles and protein. Super friendly and fast service in a modestly sized space.
google avatar

Cay P.

Yelp
Food is ok (: good place to try out. Would come again to try the pork ribs and Thai tea
google avatar

Kat J.

Yelp
Let me start by saying the food itself was tasty. This review is more so a warning for people with Allergies I myself don't have but allergies however I did ask for no peanuts in the pad Thai and they were mixed into the dish, so someone with allergies wouldn't know until they started eating it as they weren't visible. The other problem was it was supposed to be veggie only and it came topped with chicken instead with a few green onions. The delivery was fast and food came hot, but those things were an issue.
google avatar

Rangoli K.

Yelp
I would recommend JT Thai to be a very to go food place. I just tried a couple of options. Personally, I feel that the flavor is not great, if you're looking for a cheaper option, especially if you're a student probably yes but other than that, I wouldn't recommend this place. The service is kinda OK and the ambience also feels like normal. I wouldn't say too high about anything.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Have only had take out from here. The food gets the job done, if you have a craving for Thai. We ordered the pad Thai, yellow curry and tom kha all spiciness level 3 - we could've gone hotter. All dishes were kind of sweet, which was slightly off-putting
google avatar

Christy P.

Yelp
Service was good. We have been here multiple times. I usually get the chicken rice dish. The food here is good. I love getting the Thai ice tea for long nights. Parking is hard sometimes.
google avatar

Irene Y.

Yelp
Came here for a late night dinner. Very reasonable prices and great flavors for every dish we got! Just the right amount of savory, tangy, and spice. Great portion sizes too! We were sooo full after. It's self-serve type of place where you order, they give you a number, and drop off your food. Quick and fast service! Our literally came out within 5 mins.
google avatar

Vince C.

Yelp
I used to really like this place so I placed an order through uber eats. Spicy Basil Chicken (Spice level 3) had no basil in the dish and was salty, no spice at all. So out of the dishes namesake they got the chicken part. Padthai (Spice level 4) once again no spices and tasted like ketchup What happened here ):
google avatar

Casper D.

Yelp
food was good but the price has gone up compared with last year. i will come again and try again the pork leg plate.
google avatar

Norbert C.

Yelp
Quick and friendly service. We ordered the bbq pork over rice and drunk noodles, which were both amazing. Parking can be a little tricky, but it wouldn't deter me from coming back.
google avatar

Anthony R.

Yelp
Second time eating here. Drunken chicken and a Thai tea with boba. Nice and spicy, quick service, nice people. Friends had the rice and the beef drunken noodles respectively. They both enjoyed it very much. The back room was super quiet and the bathrooms were clean. Would eat again!

Yelp
Popped in on a whim a little after 9pm. The staff was fantastic, especially the person who took my order. I was trying to figure out what to order. He walked me through some options and talked to me about how they made their sauces and curries in house. He said the green curry has lots of fresh chiles and garlic blended up and I was sold! Ordered brown rice and chicken curry. They also have a great station where you can take home little containers of Thai chiles, ground chile, or pickled jalapenos for an extra kick. The food was delicious and they threw in an egg roll! Best $14 I've spent on a dinner in a while!

RegalCyan C.

Yelp
The staff here is AMAZING. Crystal helped a large party of us get situated and made sure we all got all our food out correct and quick. The yellow and panang curry are both great! The Kao mun gai tod is good too. JT spicy soup is like pho and is good too. The bbq pork over rice is good. The wings are amazing and have a very good crunch. Thai tea is strong and not too sweet and the green tea is light. Honestly think that whatever you get will be satisfyingly good. All of us are in a food coma now.
google avatar

Wen D.

Yelp
Quick take out order which I appreciate. I don't recall how the food was as it was for my son. Not bad but not notable if not en route. Won't make a special trip here.
google avatar

Nina N.

Yelp
This restaurant is shared in a plaza next to a donut shop, Sharetea, and other little shops. The pad thai was okay but the peanut vinegar salad was a little disappointing. It's supposed to come with peanut and vinegar sauce but I don't think they gave us the right sauces, which are handed on the side. I personally think it would be better to have the sauces tossed in. The salad did not look as appealing and a little too simple. The plates also made it difficult to mix the ingredients together since they are sectioned paper plates. I don't care about it being disposable plates but it would've been better with no section parts on the plate.
google avatar

Maddie T.

Yelp
I was around the area and looked up something close to my hotel. Decided to try this place and it did not disappoint. The service was quick and the food was good. I'm picky when it comes to my pad Thai and it was good. I also had the Hainan chicken. It was also very good. The chicken was not dry, the rice was well seasoned. My husband ordered the duck soup and he said it was flavorful, the duck was tender and marinade well. We also had the panang with beef. Flavor was on point but the beef was dry and hard. That was the only downside of the meal. Other than that everything was delicious. Would return next time I'm in town. Kids gave it a thumbs up
google avatar

Yvette M.

Yelp
Good food and nice employees, I like the space in the back they have for seating. 8/10
google avatar

Benjamin Y.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time today and let's just say I was very disappointed in the food. I ordered four things and here is my take - pad Thai - 4/10 the shrimp were over cooked and not flavorful, flavor of pad Thai was one dimensional - drunken noodles (pad kee Mao) - 1/10 - there was no basil in my dish which is quintessential to this dish. They also used pad Thai noodles (long thing) instead of the flat rice noodle that you're supposed to. In the photos they look like they do have the flat rice noodle, they must have run out today, in which case the long thin rice noodle is not a substitution! - ground basil Chicken - again there was no basil in this dish at all and no basil flavor. How can you even serve this dish without having a main ingredient?? - steamed chicken rice - 8/10. the only dish that was decent - the rice was very flavorful with a ginger chicken flavor, good sauce to pair with it. The chicken soup was a nice touch
google avatar

Nastaran M.

Yelp
Was craving some thai on a cold evening in San Diego, J&T was exactly what we needed. The Tom Kha was warm and fresh with chicken and creaminess of the coconut milk. The panang curry had the right amount of spice and flavor. Super quick service and no line. Definitely more simple/street food style.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Very tasty pad kee mao/drunken noodles. I chose level 8/10 for spiciness and it's just right for me (I have a higher tolerance than most people). They paced the food really well for togo orders, it was still hot when I got home. The only downside to this is the portion. It could have been bigger. I was still hungry at the end of it.

Yelp
I left the vet with my dog and noticed this Thai restaurant just a few doors down from us. It was cold and foggy out and I just wanted some soup. Tom Yum is my go to and they offer a small bowl here which I was thankful for since I wasn't too hungry. Man, do I regret eating here. The Tom Yum was possibly the worst I have ever tried. It was inedible. It tasted like that artificial lime juice you get at the stores. It was also very vinegary. I don't know how else to describe it besides just terrible. It tasted nothing like what Tom Yum should taste like. This is the only dish I've tried from here but I don't know if I'd ever go back. I don't like to judge a restaurant solely on one single dish but it's hard not to when a dish was so poorly made. I will say the staff were incredibly nice though!
google avatar

Dom M.

Yelp
Local to the downtown area and confirmed by both my buddy and I who have seen both the city and countryside of Thailand... J&T Thai Street Food knocks it out of the park! The staff are from Thailand and welcome you in with a warm greeting and attentiveness that gets your meal started right away. I of course went with a Singha beer and got into the Panang Curry which left me full but not stuffed. My buddy had the fried rice which was a generous portion for us to share. The decor and vibe is great for both small and large parties. Cost is very reasonable especially for a location in the heart of downtown where you often see restaurants raise prices. All in all, great experience and a go to spot I'll be recommending to guests in from out of town!

Yelp
This is one place I can get pig knuckle with skin on it, cooked till meat falls off bone. I ask for extra skin, which tastes like butter to me. It is served on rice, and the price was the same as my previous review date. The vegetables, which was like swiss chard was very flavorless and not tender. Not cooked in any sat, even, or other flavoring. The greens are very boring. I ate with a dance partner in my square dance club. He order pad thai. he was not enthralled with it, for one thing he likes his pad thai with the wide noodles. I could hardly see the noodles in his dish, they were so skinny, like bean sprouts skinny. . He said it was just OK in taste but quite spicy, which he can eat really spicy and likes that level.

Yelp
Wanted to try a new Thai place and decided to give this place a shot. I ordered the basic fried rice and it was good. It's a good location with a friendly staff.
