The Best Bars in Portland, Oregon | Bon Appétit

"A Wisconsin backroads tavern transplanted into Portland, packed with Midwest sports memorabilia and a deeply Midwestern bar program: heavy on Miller High Life, flowing Malört shots, and an over‑the‑top Bloody Mary piled high with summer sausage, smoked cheese, olives, celery, lime (sometimes a pickle or tiny burger). Known for the best fried buffalo wings in town and crispy cheese curds for dunking in ranch, it’s a convivial, phone‑free spot where a crisp Point Special Lager or a first Malört shot makes for a proper visit." - ByJordan Michelman

Portland New Restaurant, Bar, and Food Cart Openings, May 2024 - Eater Portland

"Jerry’s Tavern, the long-awaited bar from pizzaiolo Jerry Benedetto, opened last week in Northwest Portland. Benedetto amassed a cult following and months-long waitlist during the height of the pandemic for his Chicago-style thin crust pizza, but will not be adding the dish to his menu until his pizza oven is fixed." - Janey Wong

Google
I give it 3.5 stars. For what some call the best wings in Portland, I was quite disappointed. While they were crispy, there was not enough sauce on them and they were quite dry. I can see how they have the potential to be really good (the crispiness!) but they just didn’t hit the mark today. The buffalo sauce flavor was simple but good (tastes like Frank’s plus butter only- but with basically no heat. My six year old ate multiple without having to drink too much water. This might have been due to the lack of sauce on the wings though). The barbecue wings were a little too sweet for my taste (but I feel this was about most bbq sauces) Other items: - two brick burgers - pretty good and flavorful. Probably the best thing we got. Wish them came with fries without extra charge - beer battered cod - disappointing. Too much batter and the fish itself was quite mushy also. We didn’t even finish it - beer battered fries - nothing special. Costs $3 extra to sub fries for the chips that come with the cod. NOTE: they no longer serve the tavern style pizza

This place is somewhere I literally just found out of nowhere getting off the plane. I am from Vegas and I love dive bars. The shift drink with vodka is BOMB! 💣 Morgan the chef was phenomenal with the customer service and cuisine. They hooked it up! Thanks Morgan! 😉 Jerry is a cool a** dude. And I wish this establishment many years ago to come. I can’t wait to visit again!

Not sure why it’s taken me this long to post, but some of these images are from the soft opening a year ago as well as more recent ones. Great place, great people and great staff… have had way too many buckets of the highlife here before games, after games and to watch games. Both beer and hard alcohol available. Space looks like that weird neighbor that moved here from the Midwest only to decorate his basement to remind him of home…

Was a great place to watch a game! They had the volume on, was pretty packed but not too big. The wings were surprisingly pretty good and nothing took too long to come out. Fun environment.

Love this bar. Best cheese curds in the PNW. Reminded me of the ones back in Minnesota. The hamms is cold and the people are NICE.

If you want a down home old school tavern "NORM" with a ball game on the screen, this is as legit as it gets! This is what a local corner bar strives to be. Tell the owner to start making the tacos carnitas all the time and this place is a 10 of 10!!!...lol

This place was so much fun. We were visiting from Texas and just happened to stop by… So glad we did. The outside was not that impressive by day , but when we walked in, we were thrilled to see all the colored lights and the funky decor everywhere. The owner, Jerry, welcomed us and made us feel like home , immediately. Jerry was hilarious and made everyone in the bar feel like he was their best friend. He had us laughing the whole time. We especially enjoyed our conversation with him about a ten stripped June beetle:).😉 Jerry's Tavern afforded us a welcoming spirit, a delicious hamburger, good drinks and wonderful conversation. It made us wish we could have a bar just like this in Texas. Dan and Debbie Amerson If ever we get back to the Portland area, this will be on our list of places to revisit.

Anyone who reviews Jerry’s place with less than 4 stars has a bowl of Froot Loops for a brain. If you have followed Jerry through his journey to make this place a reality you will know that this place is much more than a tavern; it’s a gathering place for locals to interact, mingle, and enjoy company. Not to mention, the food and beverage options are absolutely spot on for what you would find back in the Midwest! I’m from the Midwest and having grown up there, the door to Jerry’s is a portal back home for me. His Pizza is spot on and is being served sparingly at this point. His burger is the best I may have had in Portland, and his wings just got rated the best in Portland by a local wing review guy on Instagram. Clearly anyone who comes to make a review negative about Jerry’s is an impotent, incel that lives in their mom’s basement. That person also clearly has never been to the Midwest and or know the culture that is the Midwest. The thing Jerry has provided to the city of Portland goes well beyond the food and beverage options being provided. And even at that, those menu items are still amaze balls.

Yelp
It's 10 a.m., and I'm sitting in Jerry's Tavern. The kind of place that feels like a refuge for the damned and the divine alike. The air smells faintly of old wood, stale beer, and something fried--a scent that whispers promises it's going to save your life tonight. And you believe it. Jerry's isn't just a bar. It's a cathedral of character, a joint so authentic you half-expect Tom Waits to walk in, mumble something poetic, and collapse into a booth. The man himself, Jerry, is behind the bar, slinging drinks like he was born for this. He's part bartender, part therapist, part shaman. He could be my dad if he wanted to, but this morning he feels like my brother--the kind who'd bail you out of jail without asking questions. And then there are the cheese curds. Dear god, the cheese curds. They're not just fried hunks of dairy--they're miracles. Golden, crispy exteriors that give way to molten, salty perfection. God made these with both hands. Pair them with a Miller bucket, and you'll forget whatever nonsense brought you here in the first place. Jerry's Tavern doesn't care who you are, where you've been, or what you've done. It's here for you. Best bar I've ever been to.

Yelp
Love this place and the vibe! As a Wisconsinite I felt very at home. The way Jerry made his rounds and greeted everyone was so warm and welcoming. Our experience was unfortunately soured by a bartender who was very rude. I requested a very Midwest shot and she gave me a nasty look. I explained what the recipe was, as a bartender, her response was to shove a menu in my hand stating she didn't know what I was taking about. We will return but the experience was unfortunately soured by her attitude.

Yelp
Was excited to try this place out until the owner sent me a shitty response after I said I'd never seen a bar do anything like this and asked if people who don't like to wear sports gear aren't real fans. Seems awfully pretentious and petty but then again what would you expect from a bar whose main draw is cheap Malort?

Tyler F.

Yelp
Great bar, great prices, great vibe inside. It felt exactly like a Green Bay bar. I wish it was slightly bigger and more tables but all good. Also wished I didn't live 25 minutes away.

Yelp
Was very surprised with how good the wings were, particularly the Buffalo. The burger/slider was also nice and worth it. The fry on wings was fantastic. Didn't try the dip as usually don't with my wings. They mainly show bears and packers games so if looking for another game while those are going on then might be sol. They actually come to your table for service and are great (Jerry was actually our server for the first half we were there). Not your normal portland "service" which was awesome to experience again. Is a smaller place but they have a couple tvs outside with sidewalk seating however if going for a packers or bears game then probably need to get there early, we showed up right after one so were all good but they were sold out of modelo especial (plenty of other choices to choose from). A very nice and welcome addition to the Portland fabric.

Yelp
This place looks like it's been plucked directly from the Midwest and dropped in Portland's NW Industrial area. It also looks like it's been here for years, not days. It feels cozy and familiar without trying too hard. I have been following Jerry's journey for the past few years. From his condo-made tavern style pizza during the pandemic to his short stint slingin' pies at Bear Paw; I selfishly wish it was available at Jerry's Tavern. ... Those checkerboard tablecloths are practically begging for it! The cheeseburger was good. Hamm's on tap was cold. I will visit often.

Yelp
Huge shout out to Jerry and his team for bringing the midwest to the pacific northwest! Enter the front doors and you will be transported into a friendly watering hole for cold beverages, tasty eats, and friendly service. We dug the interior design - all the sports memorabilia and beer signage. A fantastic place to catch the game and have fun with friends. Excited to try the food next time!

Steve R.

Yelp
Hands down the best sports bar in PDX. I went last weekend to watch some playoff football and the vibes were incredible. Jerry, the owner, was greeting everybody and making sure everyone was taken care of. We even got the whole bar to chant "Jerry! Jerry! Jerry!" lol. The food was great too! The hot wings were crispy and delicious. Amazing spot!

Yelp
Can't wait for the pizza to arrive for this smallish tavern tucked away in the industrial area of NW Portland.

Yelp
If I could give this place zero stars, I absolutely would! I came to this bar expecting to enjoy some wings and a good time, but what I experienced was shocking and unacceptable. From the start, the bartender was rude, dismissive, and seemed to hate his job. Whether he was having a bad day or just naturally had a nasty attitude, his behavior was completely unprofessional. After ordering a drink, we placed a food order and then were inexplicably told we couldn't order another drink. When I politely asked why, the bartender looked me up and down, then walked away without an explanation. As a Hispanic person, I couldn't help but feel this was racially motivated, especially since it was only 6:30, and I had only ordered one drink. To make matters worse, someone alerted "Jerry" (who appeared heavily intoxicated, stumbling around, and embarrassing himself). Instead of resolving the issue, Jerry told us the bartender "has his reasons" and refused to elaborate. I took a photo to warn others about what I now firmly believe to be a racist establishment. When I left, Jerry followed me outside, yelling profanities and behaving aggressively. In a final insult, he turned to my white friend, smiled, and said, "You can come back anytime," before handing her drink tokens. This place is not just unprofessional--it's downright discriminatory. To my fellow people of color: DO NOT SUPPORT THIS RACIST ESTABLISHMENT!

Yelp
ample street parking and a lot across the street. This bar is such a gem and the wings are so good! They have become my "go to" my sister ordered the cheeseburger and fries. She was so kind to let me have a bite, juicy and delish! I love the fries I will have to get a basket next time! I think they have 7? TVs, great spot to catch a game! Friendly staff and fun interior that feels cozy and welcoming!

Yelp
Feels like I've been coming here for years. Extremely familiar atmosphere, bartender and menu. The smell is the only signal this isn't a bar in the Midwest and new (only open 8 days). An aged Midwest bar would be trenched in old cigarettes and fried cheese fumes. Jerry's Tavern is 99% Wisconsin. They know my name already, have Busch Light and Hamm's on tap and pour shots of Malort. The fresh cut fries are perfection. If you miss or need to experience Wisconsin, get here!

Yelp
Fun vibes, great service. Really nice crowd. I will definitely come back. Food is good.

Yelp
Love this spot. It's a great place to watch a game or hang out on on-game day. I've never gotten any food there but the drinks are great and vibes are cool. If you are a fan of a Midwest team or "Midwest nice" definitely worth stopping by.

Yelp
I went to Jerry's tonight to watch Monday night football. Great atmosphere and my order was taken promptly. After about 45 minutes the patron who ordered a little before me asked if they could check on her order. The bartender said it's a one man kitchen and it should be out shortly. I assumed my order would be out shortly after that order, so I didn't bother asking about it. After an hour and forty five minutes I kindly asked for them to take the wings off my order and close me out. Not sure I will ever go back or recommend Jerry's in the future.

Yelp
A wonderful neighborhood bar near work that appreciates my "Wisconsin-ness". Highly recommend.

Yelp
Food, service, ambiance, respect, pride, community, Portland. Jerry's takes the crown.

Yelp
Went here for the first time tonight and there was a limited menu due to extenuating circumstances but man, did they deliver. Great service, bomb cheese curds. We met one of the cooks, Morgan, and he totally made our night. We'll definitely be back for wings and pizza in the near future!

Yelp
Being that this is the first time I've stopped by upon recommendation by Ray Cato, my Beer & Wine Steward at Safeway in Ashland, OR, I am a little uncertain. I'm not the kind of person that easily joins in with people, this is why I am giving the crowd my review this way. Please understand why I review how I did

Michelle O.

Yelp
Clean kitchen, bar, and bathroom! Jerry and his wife Lauren were personally walking around making sure everyone's drinks were full and that everyone was having a great time! I'm a Chicagoan, went for the Bears game and there were so many friendly, strange, and inebriated customers, it was fantastic and felt like home. The Vienna Beef hot dogs, homemade brats, and Italian sausages were delicious. The bar was packed inside and out which we loved. Icing on the cake was the Bears actually pulled out a W!

Yelp
Amazing new spot that will have you feeling like you're back in the Midwest! Excellent neighborhood vibe with a fun and attentive staff. I can say the wings are some of the best I've had, and the burgers are excellent as well. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Yelp
Best sports bar I've ever been to in Portland. Official bar for the Chicago Bears and GB Packers (I know it sounds crazy) but all teams are welcome. Intimate environment with staff that really give a shit. Would recommend to anyone trying to watch any game at any time. Cheers!

Yelp
Being from the Midwest, this place reminds me of home. Great service and atmosphere! Excited to catch football games here during season

Bailey T.

Yelp
Atmosphere was fun and decent if you're rooting for the right team and interested in the game. Food was average but didn't expect much. Worst part for our group was being closed out before we were done with a tip already added by the brunette bartender. I got a notification from my bank since it was new place and when I went up to the bar to ask for receipt and close out, since I was just charged. My server was busy but the pink haired girl wasn't, so I kindly asked her to close me out and mentioned I noticed my card was already charged however, in case it was an accident. She promptly responded with, " I don't even know how to start a tab so not my problem." It was a basically a full house and they were the only two servers. I found that pretty hard to believe and rude for a response. I was able to dispute it with my bank and get a refund since there was indeed no signature by me to approve the purchase. After that realization my entire group checked their accounts after and everyone had double charges or incorrect totals, very disappointing people hired. Will not be returning after this experience and reading other experiences. I hope for some turnaround in the future and to give it another shot.

Yelp
Perfection. Anyone arguing otherwise is a coward and/or a liar. Best wings west of the Mississippi.

Bret C.

Yelp
What a great little watering hole. I just happened to stop by right before the start of the Kentucky Derby. It was rocking. Lots of great people in the bar, men and women. They only have a few food items but that's not why I stopped by. When the pizza starts it will be great. I'm looking forward to watching a Packers game here. Jerry is a Bears fan and his wife Lauren is a Packers fan.

Jacob M.

Yelp
Best sports bar in Portland! Love the Midwest basement vibe it has going and the staff is awesome. I have been going to this bar since they opened and they have a great sense of community. Beer option range from good cheap fun to local IPAs and the wings and burger slap!

Michael S.

Yelp
Great spot to have a beer. Jerry is super nice and customers were very welcoming. Highly recommend. I've never even had his pizza which I hear is terrific.

Emily O.

Yelp
Stopped in after work and the bar was packed. Really fun vibe with plenty of outdoor seating. Service was super friendly and we felt welcome. I'll definitely be back.

Michael M.

Yelp
full disclosure - I'm a Vikings fan (but wouldn't it be great if we could turn this joint?) it's a packers bar and god bless 'em ! the owner the staff the whole scene is most excellent ‼ love the vibe - love the wings - love the people

Kevin O.

Yelp
went today to have burger around 1:15pm on a saturday. was told by the woman behind the bar they aren't serving food. very disappointing. seems they have a menu on online and peoples reviews indicate they have food. wtf! won't be venturing here again.
