Puerto Rican bites, specializing in jibaritos & mofongo

"This Puerto Rican spot has some of Chicago's best jibaritos. Their crispy plantain sandwiches come with all sorts of fillings like tender steak with grilled onions, blood sausage, or juicy roast pork. Plus, at around $10 each, they're affordable. But what completes each sandwich is their potent garlic spread that adds flavor, and also ensures that no one will want to ride the elevator with you." - sam faye, adrian kane, john ringor, nick allen
"Jibaritos y Mas is a Puerto Rican spot with locations in Logan Square, Elmwood Park, and Clearing. And they specialize in, well, jibaritos and more. And the jibaritos are some of Chicago’s best. They come with all sorts of fillings—three types of steak, octopus, shrimp, and juicy roast pork. But what completes each sandwich is a potent garlic spread that adds flavor, and also ensures that no one will want to ride the elevator with you. For the “more” there are at least 12 types of mofongo, plus entrees like carne guisada and chuleta frita." - adrian kane, john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen
"Jibaritos Y Mas has, well, jibaritos and more. Even after expanding to three locations across the city, they’ve managed to maintain the same quality as their original location on Fullerton. For the jibaritos, they have possibly the most varieties in Chicago. This means four types of steak (including churrasco) in addition to octopus, roja vieja, vegetarian which has both arroz con gandules and grilled vegetables, and even a Cubano jibarito which is basically two sandwiches in one. For the “more”, all three locations offer at least 12 types of mofongo, and the Lincoln Park location offers brunch Friday through Sunday, with dishes like guava and cheese French toast and cocktails infused with fresh kiwi and passion fruit." - jessica rome, john ringor
"You can’t talk about iconic Chicago sandwiches without mentioning the jibarito, a genius creation that swaps out bread for tostones and was created in 1996 at a spot called Borinquen Restaurant. Unfortunately, that original place closed, but its sibling, Borinquen Lounge in North Center, carries on the family tradition by stuffing crispy flattened plantains with thin strips of steak, tomatoes, lettuce, cheese, mayo, and a generous spread of garlic paste on top." - nick allen, john ringor, adrian kane
"This Puerto Rican restaurant in Logan Square has two other locations in the city—Lincoln Park and Dunning—and all of them have great jibaritos priced around $10. From thin steak with grilled onions, to blood sausage, to juicy roast pork, there are plenty of crispy plantain sandwiches to choose from. Plus, each one gets a fragrant layer of garlic spread on top that not only adds extra flavor, but is also a good way to deter anyone from speaking to us afterward." - john ringor, veda kilaru, nick allen
