Jiki Miyazawa

"The true pleasure of Jiki Miyazawa is the pursuit of deep understanding of a given ingredient. For example, freshly baked sesame tofu brings together cold-kneaded sesame and pungent roasted sesame seeds. Grilled longtooth grouper and Spanish mackerel pair with starchy sauce using fish-bone dashi soup stock. Cooking with a change of perspective brings out the strong points of an ingredient. Rice is served in stages, from firm to soft, allowing diners to enjoy each flavour." - Michelin Inspector

Excellent kaiseki dinner experience. The restaurant is intimate, with only about 10 seats, and the chef prepares each dish right in front of you. The preset menu is beautifully crafted and gluten-free friendly. Reservations are a must, and the cost is around $100 per person. Wine options are limited but well chosen. Some dishes are quite exotic, so it may not be ideal for kids. One of the best meals I’ve had in Japan—refined, personal, and unforgettable.

My brother and I visited on May 9th and had a truly wonderful experience. The food was excellent—especially the sesame tofu, which stood out as a highlight. The seafood dishes were also incredibly fresh and flavorful. Everything was prepared with such care right in front of us and beautifully presented. The chefs were incredibly kind and took the time to explain each dish clearly in English. Highly recommend and hope to return

This meal was absolutely incredible. Fantastic showcase of local cuisine across numerous courses including a number of dishes exclusive to the restaurant. The selection included seasonal vegetables, fish, and beef. The chefs demonstrated a range of techniques to highlight the quality of the ingredients. The service was relaxed and very smooth. We enjoyed the meal with a few different sakes which were recommended by the chef. Brilliant.

Traditional Japanese Kaiseki refined to the peak of respect for every ingredient. Each dish pays homage to every component, from the history to harvest and preparation. The menu changes to reflect what nature has to offer and what we have to be grateful for every season. The presentation of every entree whet the appetite and piqued your intellect. The chefs were interactive (English friendly!) and held incredible knowledge of their craft. It felt as if they were welcoming us into their home for, as both a long-time friend and a first-time visitor, with immense hospitality. They were also very accomodating with dietary preferences/restrictions (double check with them first). Thank you for this incredible experience.

Very ellaborated dishes in an exclusive environment. Sesame Tofu is one of the best dishes I've tasted in Japan. Truly amazing intense flavour and texture, congratulations!!! The day I went was only tourists, no locals.

Before any comment i just say to anyone: TRY IT. Amazing food and combination, high level attention to every detail and to customer’s satisfaction. The personell was all very kind and so enjoyable to talk to, especially chef Motomura and suchef Oguri. This place really completed our already beautiful experience in Kyoto and gave us the best Kaiseki taste possibly requested. The signature dish was really something else.

Very great experience in Kyoto, foods are fabulous and elegant. Lovely Washoku cuisine and modern wine pairing. Willing to come again next time in Kyoto

This place is exceptional! The host is super nice and the atmosphere is great. He even accommodated us and amended the menu for a gluten-free experience. This is the best restaurant I have visited in Kyoto. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Located right by Nishiki Market, seating is limited to about 8 people or so in a bar-like setting. The chefs are amazing. They did a great job of explaining each dish and answering any questions. We went for the 6 course meal. All of them were so delicious. I really enjoyed the sesame tofu and the bonito fish with shiga prefecture fermented rice and seaweed. Jiki Miyazawa is a great place to experience a kaiseki. All of the chefs are amazing. Despite the fact that most only speak Japanese, they still explain the dishes quite well in English. Highly recommended.

Yelp
A 14 course meal worked up to a surreal cultural experience. The Japanese name of this style of cuisine is 懐石料理; which translates to having a warm stone in your chest. It's such a fitting name as you approached the end of the meal you feel the warmth literally and spiritually. Most part of the meal was prepared right in front of the 9 guests table; demonstrating the grand chef's skill and hospitality. Local ingredients, excellent skills and amazing food. This place definitely left a long lasting memories representing Kyoto.

Yelp
If you want an intimate and innovative kaiseki experience, this is the place to go! With only ten seats at a single counter, you're right there with the chefs as they produce your amazing meal. It was a surprisingly easy restaurant to book--we did it online a couple of weeks before arriving in Japan, and there was plenty of availability. The food itself is complex and creative. This is a more modern take on kaiseki, but each dish was perfectly prepared and stunning. There wasn't a single thing I didn't like. I've had kaiseki all over Japan (and even all over the world), and this definitely rates in my top five meals. The chefs themselves were a pleasure to watch and talk to (although they don't speak much English, so if you don't know Japanese, you might be a little lost on what's going on or what's being served). I look forward to returning the next time I'm in Kyoto, and I would recommend it to anyone adventurous and looking for something a little out of the ordinary (even from traditional kaiseki).

Yelp
After the third course, I told the chef that the tuna dish I had just eaten was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. He humbly thanked me and said it meant so much to him. He then proceeded to serve 4 more courses that were even better than that. So yes, this was the best meal of my life. It was a 10-14 course Keiseki meal depending how you count things. I had the feeling of eating the greatest thing ever several times in succession. How can I describe to you what that feels like except that I am highly endorsing this experience for anyone who enjoys regional cuisine, gastronomy, innovation, quality ingredients and attention to detail, or just simply fine dining. This is a Michelin star restaurant, but at around $100 USD for dinner, it is an experience that is accessible to most travelers. Seize this opportunity. You won't regret it.

Yelp
If you are visiting Kyoto, do yourself a favor and make reservations at Jiki Miyazawa, a Michelin Star award winning keiseki restaurant. Chef Takatomo Izumi is a genius with local ingredients and makes the most wonderful and flavorful dishes. The entire lunch experience was at the highest level of taste and service. There were too many dishes to explain in a review but some highlights include crab innards curry, fermented rice with Snapper sashimi, carrot tempura cooked for an hour, and an awesome strawberry dessert. Every dish was perfect in its own way. Don't pass on this place. You guys will thank me later.

Yelp
We were super lucky to get a same day reservation at this place, where Takatomo Izumi and his team served us an amazing meal. Thank you guys so much. Did the set menu (no other options...) and had about 8 courses of the most amazing flavors and combinations. Really hard to describe how great this was. One of the best meals of our lives. From quail meatball to Unagi on tea-smoked radish to homemade sesame tofu to cod soup to bonito with onion to tuna aged by a gill bleeding technique to a bunch of other amazing bites and sips, this meal was so good. We'll definitely be back and make sure you go if you're in Kyoto. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
A unique harmony of classic Japanese Kaiseki and European influences. Chef Takatomo Izumi from Shiga prefecture and team prepared an unforgettable meal and took the time to explain the dishes, even bringing out an iPad and magazines to provide in-depth details. Highlights include hamo with chrysanthemum pedals, barracuda with onion koji, anago with shaved chestnut, kotake mushroom rice with egg yolk. The unique sake selection paired with the course perfectly. To appreciate the experience at Jiki Miyazawa is to appreciate what is Japan, the blending of tradition and innovation.

Yelp
Amazing kaiseki experience!! The service, food quality, and environment were top-notch. All produce and meats were locally sourced, and carefully prepared. I was most surprised by the mochi in creamy broth and chawanmushi with gravy. My favorites were the soyless tofu and snow crab rice dish. My husband and I booked this location for our anniversary, and the chefs remembered that detail and presented us with special dishes. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Yelp
I had the opportunity to reserve a lunch meal Kaiseki here at Jiki while visiting Kyoto. The restaurant is small, with 9/10 available seats only. The preparation of everything is very much like the Japanese culture; clean, tidy, and spot on. Having never had a Kaiseki meal, I didn't really know what to expect. What exactly is a "traditional" Japanese meal? How many courses are served? What makes this place better than another place's Kaiseki? All those questions were answered during my meal. The Kaiseki meal itself revolved around local, in season produce. Each dish was clean tasting, fresh, and unique. I've never had any of the dishes that were made, and probably never will again as the chef changes up the menu every week. It was a worthy experience and I would highly recommend a go to anyone who is in the area.

Yelp
My very first Michelin rated restaurant! I came here with 2 friends while we were staying in Kyoto for the summer because we had all wanted to try traditional Japanese food and when we found this restaurant and saw that it was a Michelin and not too expensive we knew we had to go. There are three different meal sets you can order. I ordered the smaller set that came out to about $37 US dollars after tax. The ambiance of the restaurant is very calm and quiet; my friends and I felt slightly awkward and out of place being quite young to be dining at such a fancy restaurant. It was really interesting getting to watch the chefs prepare the food in front of us. I think the entire meal lasted about an hour to an hour and a half. And even though the portion size of each dish was small we ended up leaving extremely full and satisfied. My favorite dish out of the set was their baked tofu. It was baked on the outside but smooth and liquidy on the inside. It was also topped with a sesame sauce and then ground sesame on top of that. SO AMAZING! I would go back just for that if I could. Apparently that is the chef's specialty dish. My friends and I had such a great experience. The food was delicious and the chefs were friendly (they would explain what was in each dish to us in English since we don't really understand Japanese). I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any friends or family traveling to Kyoto that wanted to try a traditional Japanese meal for a good price. Don't forget to make reservations beforehand!

Yelp
This was one of my favorite meals in Kyoto! We were able to make a reservation using Visa's travel services and chose the middle priced set which was around $50. You can watch the head chef prepare every dish right in front of you, and he really took care to explain each dish and answered any questions we had. He also had a few videos on his iPad that explained some of the processes they used to prepare their food, such as the air-injected tuna, which was one of my favorite dishes. We got around 8 dishes which included unique dishes such as sesame tofu and scallops topped with dried tofu skin. Every dish was small but filling, and by the end I was very satisfied. Overall, the experience was definitely worth, and I can see why they have a Michelin Star.

Yelp
BEST dining experience during my time in japan. My boyfriend and I got the highest dinner course option and we believe it was well worth it. There were a lot of aged fish dishes that were so so tasty and interesting since I had never heard of such a thing before. The head chef was amazingly kind and explained the dishes very thoroughly, including the aging process for the fish and how the sticky tofu pudding thing is made. His English is very good even though he says it isn't lol. Also he gave us a handwritten copy of the courses with his own beautiful Japanese calligraphy on a nice looking piece of paper as a souvenir! The tofu dish actually wasn't my favorite. The winners for me were the aged fish dishes, the Kobe beef dish, and the soups. The fruit, as is typical in japan, was so so fresh and sweet tasting. My boyfriend and I had so much fun, Jiki Miyazawa is something we still talk about months after we went. Do yourself a favor and go!!! Make sure to call in and make a reservation a few days in advance!

Yelp
In the land of Michelin stars, we had to splurge and experience a Kaiseki meal in Kyoto, Japan. And Jiki Miyazawa did not disappoint. We started out with some Sake. The details did not go unnoticed from the beginning, as we were asked to choose from an arrangement of different but beautiful sake glasses. As everyone pointed out, one of the highlights is the fried sesame tofu dish. But in my opinion, the aged tuna was the best dish of the night. The fish is aged in such a way that it does not compromise the freshness but enhances the flavor. The process is known as Shinkei-Jime. #UMAMI Reservation: This was a different process from the States. But eventually we had to have our hotel concierge make the reservation for us. You also have to pre-pick the course. At the time we went, it was choosing between the 10,000 yen course of the 16,000 yen course. We opted for the 10,000 yen course, and I didn't feel like we missed out on much. We were happy with this course choice. This is recommended for once in a lifetime meal. The restaurant seats limited people but throughout the whole meal, Chef and his team make it an enjoyable and relaxing experience. It's really a show to be able to watch these trained chefs coordinate the meals from plating to serving. Bravo! #Kyoto #MichelinStar

Yelp
This is hands down the best meal I've ever had outside of three Michelin star restaurants. There is no kobe beef, no caviar, no super exotic fish, but they take simple ingredients and elevate them to simply extraordinary levels. Small setting for 10 people at a chefs counter with 5 or so chefs preparing the meals right in front of you. Service was absolutely amazing. The head chef spoke limited English but showed us lots of pictures and videos on his iPad when needed. See pics for details on the courses but the standouts were the anago over rice and honestly, the fruit, which made me understand why a box of these strawberries can run $50 usd. It's really hard to explain other than to say I had no idea strawberries (or oranges!) could taste this good and that's coming from someone who grew up picking these fruits at orchards at peak times... The one negative of the meal was this group of two couples from Spain who a) arrived late and b) were super boisterous and loud. Guys, if you're not native, please at least try and respect the local customs and arrive on time (Japanese are never late and each course is meant to be prepared at once for all diners) and don't be obnoxiously loud, especially not in Japan where a kaiseki meal is meant to be enjoyed in relative peace and quiet.
google avatar

Kevin L.

Yelp
File this one under... Damnnnn that was good! I made my reservation in person the day before and had Chef Izumi handling the meal. His English was good enough to explain the dishes. And what a journey it was. Please understand this is a traditional Japanese style meal using Japanese ingredients, the confusion may come with using some modern cooking techniques to prepare the delicious courses. With that said you are not going to be getting truffle laced cream, or all that rich heavy stuff so for those who think it is light in flavor compared to other maybe western style Michelin star restaurants... A big HALLO! They want to keep the ingredients to Japanese, some have very simple flavors and the goal is to bring these out, of course some have more complexities too. Yes it's true about the sesame tofu... So good! But don't hold that to be the highlight of every meal following the crazy Yelp Hype, be open to all dishes and have a great time!

Yelp
Again words fail me as to how friendly and welcoming chef was. And the food was delish, he even tried to help us get last minute resos at other restos and walked us out. At 50-60 CAD per person, it was good value. Picked this place based on its standing on Tabelog, and the Michelin star helped. Was fun talking to him about his Spanish culinary adventures -Tickets etc. Repeat: Yes!

Yelp
Coincidence and a stroke of luck brought me here. We had so much good food during our trip in Japan up until then. But I had seen YouTube clips of Japanese chefs carefully handcrafting the meal in front of you and wanted a similar kaiseki experience without a hefty price tag. When we got to our place in Kyoto, I immediately searched yelp for any good food around. Nishiki market stuck out, but I saw this one place that seemed to fit my bill. I actually spent a bit of time trying to find it to, before I realized it was literally right next door to our place. I was able to snag a reservation for 2 the night before for lunch. I chose the midpoint price of 50,000 yen as recommended to me by Chef Izumi and it was a great choice. The couple next to us got the 30,000 yen price point and another couple got the 70,000 price set and I was happy with my selection. The actual lunch lasted about an hour an a half and it was definitely amazing to see. We were front and center to the chef and seeing him meticulously carve and plate each food with such precision was simply awesome. There was also an art to it all, as all the sous chefs went about their tasks with minimal dialogue. When Chef Izumi needed something, it was already brought to him a second before he reached for it. He also tried his very best to list out the ingredients for us in English even though he really just spoke Japanese and didn't have to. We didn't come for dinner so there wasn't as much sashimi as I was hoping for, but with what we got, I couldn't complain one bit. I heard this was Michelin starred and I don't really know what value it holds nowadays, but what I do know is when I see very fresh ingredients that is crafted both skillfully and artfully from a chef that really cares. Definitely a great place to eat lunch and have a great experience!

Yelp
This is the ultimate Japanese food experience. The dishes should be considered pieces of art, both from taste and flavor perspective, and their appearance. They get assembled by the chef right in front of you. I loved watching the chef Takomoto Izumi's hands, how precise and efficient were their movements. The dishes change every day, depending on available ingredients, so they don't even published the menu. You just have to choose how much you want to pay and trust the chef. But no worries, the quality and variety of the chef's creations will satisfy the most demanding foodies.

Yelp
This is a late review. I visited Jiki Miyazawa in January 2018. I wanted to make time to really write what I truly experienced when I had my lunch there with my hubby. During my 10 days visit in Japan, I must say that Jiki Miyazawa is the highest standard of all. And I have been to many many places from high end to street food. See, this is not your day to day Japanese restaurant, not the sushi or ramen or tonkatsu restaurant. This restaurant serves KAISEKI menu which is tasting menu with small plates of chef's creation. It needs to be planned properly, and one should start meditating in the morning of the day of visit in order to really absorb every bit of experience you taste, smell, see, hear and feel. :P That's how the chef made me feel when we first stepped into the 9/10 seats counter. These were the only seats at the restaurant. It is a very small restaurant but very high end. We made a reservation through our visa concierge a month ahead of time and we were instructed to choose from 3 tasting menus. We didn't get to see the details of the menu, we had to decide from the 3 different price point. It was $35, $50 or $70 dollars, I remember the price in USD. So we went for the $70 menu as I know the dinner menu doubles the price of lunch. We were the first to arrive for lunch seating, we were few minutes earlier than our reservation, we got really scared from all the concierge warnings not to be late, therefore we OBEYED....hai..arigato!!! Hubby and I were very quiet and careful with every steps and move lol, it was so serious and quiet in there and the chefs were all standing in front of us, getting ready to serve us. Seating in the middle of the counter, we can see the entire counter where the chef craft his art. We ordered some sake, we get to pick our own sake cup from a sake cup box , the chef served us a little sake from the house to welcome us then the meal began. Course after course, we ate with our most sensitive palate turned on so that we can really taste every grain of ingredients the chef used in his artwork. We don't know what the menu consist of, but the chef explained to us when he served us our dishes. He spoke good enough English for us to understand him well. Not sure it was the sake or other diners, I felt more comfortable and warmer after the first few courses :P All other diners were local Japanese and they were all women but they all had smaller menu. They were all so polite, bowing and bowing to the chef with every dish served to them. We enjoyed our experience very much and we "bowed" to the chef as well to thank him at the end of our lunch. The chef was so polite and hospitable, since we chatted with him a little bit about our trip, he helped us with our coats, walked us out the door then all the way to the street!! Wow!!! I don't know where else I can get such service and such food experience. Please do not expect the chef to this for every guests he needs to stay inside to craft his art!! If you read my review up to here, please do yourself a favor, make a trip to Japan and eat at this place! You can thank me later.

Yelp
For a restaurant, this place is amazing. For a Michelin-rated establishment, this place is a STEAL. Half the reason we came tonal toto was to try this place- we had our hotel make us a reservation (definitely do this as it only seats around 10 people). I can't even count how many courses they served, but it was amazing. If I recall, we had the middle cost prefix menu and it was more than enough food. The dishes we prepared right in front of you, and they all tasted so fresh and light. My favorite had to have been the sesame tofu, with sesame sauce - their signature dish. They also topped it off at the end with fresh cut fruit mixed with sale-infused jello. All this and it was only 10K yen a person (less than $100). For a Michelin rated place, I was amazed.

Yelp
We were the first of our seating to arrive. The interior immediately strikes you in a way no restaurant ever has. Minimalistic. No art, a few plants hang remotely on the walls. Clean. Precise. Chef Miyazawa and his Sous Chefs greet you with a serious, but welcoming look. Like they're already concentrating on the tasks to come. You sit at one of the ten settings on the bar. The Chef and Sous are directly across from you, giving you the feeling like the diners and cooks are going to be playing some sort of culinary game against each other. Immediately, the service begins. You're handed a drink menu. We ordered cold sake. Before presenting the bottle, we were given the option of picking one of an assortment of glass, pottery, crystal and other vessels for our drink. I chose a black clay cup, the girl opted for a more traditional black and red cup. The sake is excellent, the staff obviously takes pride in their stock. The meal service begins. An apéritif is served. The affable Chef Miyazawa, speaking excellent English, explains that it's all-rice sweet sake. It's sweet, delicious, and unlike anything I've ever tasted. The first dish is served. Abalone, mushroom, fish eggs and a decadent sauce. Immediately the taste buds dance and sing. Any preconceived notions about the individual ingredients are immediately dispelled, your memory now imprinted with these new phenomenal flavors. The dishes continue one after another. High notes become higher notes. Standouts include a perfectly seared red snapper, served with an indescribably delicious sauce and with fresh citrus squeezed over the top. Later, a signature dish of the Chef's makes its appearance, a somehow-inflated piece of tofu. Gooey middle and just-charred edges reminiscent of a marshmallow cooked over an open flame. Dusted with sesame and accompanied by a sesame sauce, this dish will forever replace your opinion on sesame and its place in the culinary world. We opted for the ¥15k tasting menu comprised of about 13 dishes. The dishes surprised us from start to finish, a spectacular value for the immense quality of ingredients and creativity of the dishes. All protein is from the sea, reminding you just how good Japanese sea creatures can be and never allowing for the crutch of a seared price of beef or other land created. Just pure seafood ambrosia. The execution from the staff is flawless. Not only is the service impeccable, water glasses being filled and dishes whisked to and fro in perfect execution, but it's an amazing display to watch. The concentration on Chef Miyazawa's face as he expertly fillets fish and vegetables, with his Sous executing perfect timing to his rhythm with accompaniments is a show unto itself. This restaurant is part of an elite group of out-of-this-world culinary experiences, well-deserving of its Michelin star, and absolutely not to be missed if you're in Kyoto.

Yelp
After reading many reviews, my husband and I decided to make Jiki Miyazawa the one fancy meal in Kyoto and it didn't disappoint. Our hotel concierge helped us make reservations via email, there are 3 tiers of kaiseki meal with different price point for dinner. We opted for the middle tier, which was around $120 pp. There were around 10 courses and we were more than satisfied by the end. Neither of us has had any prior experience with kaiseki or Michelin star dinning, so we didn't harbor any expectations for this meal. What stands out most to us regarding this meal lies in the service and attention to details provided by the chef and his staff. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly. The space in small with only 10 counter seats and had a quiet/stoic feel to it, it seemed intimidating at first, but Chef Izumi made us feel welcomed and at ease. With each course he explained the ingredients and at one point even showed us a video on the process of preserving the freshness of the fish via a technique called ike jime. Part of the Kaiseki experience is also the use of unique Japanese ceramics, each course was plated simply but expertly on ancient and elegant looking earthenware/ceramics. For one of our courses, the chef told us that I was using an original 800 yr bowl, where as my husband was using a replica that looked exactly alike. At the end of the dinner, the chef personally wrote out the night's menu in calligraphy on what looked like a papyrus paper and gifted us as a parting gift. These small details and kind gestures really made this a truly memorable experience and one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
This was our first Kaiseki experience. As I made our reservation the restaurant inquired if anyone had any food allergies, my GF does. It was very considerate of them to ask. The dining room is Stark and austere, yet intimate. 8 guests at a wide bar. The Chef across from us, assembling the courses as his assistants deliver the components of each course on plates or in shiny hammered bowls heated and handled with tongs. The Chef introduces himself and apologizes for his poor English ( I wish my Japanese was as good as his poor English, we never felt any communication difficulties with any of the staff). We have pre-ordered the 12,000Y. Dinner w/ Wagyu. There are also choices of a 7600Y. and a 40000Y meal. We order Sake and are presented a tray of assorted sake cups and glasses and asked to choose ours. The courses begin, Chef explains each course at service and gives each party a little conversation. He is relaxed and friendly. He is also banging out some of the most exquisite food, I have ever seen or tasted (and I've done some tasting!). Chef notices I am lefthanded and places utensils and presents courses with that consideration, this guy is good. They age some of the fish up to 90 days,. He takes time to explain the process, even whipping out an IPad to show a quick video on how it's done (Love this guy!). They control the pace and flow of the meal effortlessly. We never feel rushed or longing for the next course. We are in the moment of the dinner for the entire evening. The ingredients, tastes, and visual enjoyment of each course makes you feel springtime. The earth, sparks of new green life, warmth and comfort the leaf of a cherry blossom in one course. It blew us away, the thought and design of every aspect in this meal. Hats off to Chef Takatomo Izumi, his staff and to Restaurant Jiki Miyazawa. We had an amazing time. The Chef even went as far as taking a photograph of my girlfriend and I and providing us a kanji Scroll of the courses of our meal. Kaiseki is as much an experience as it is a dinner , it is expensive but I feel worth it. You may have difficulty making your reservation on your own try to use your hotel concierge or a Japanese speaking person to assist you.

Yelp
Booked this place to celebrate my anniversary with my husband during our trip to Kyoto and I am glad I did. The service and food were exceptional. The atmosphere is intimate and only seats 10 people. You get to watch the chef as he, along with his cooks prepare every dish right in front of you. The ingredients of every dish really balance itself out in flavor. This was one of the best meals I've had during our trip and it's well worth a visit.

Yelp
In Japan, where the food culture is so high on expectations for a Michelin rated meal, it's difficult to find one that stands out amongst all the great restaurants. This place is one that does. The food and presentation was fantastic! Will definitely go again during my next trip.

Yelp
There are experiences in life for which you simply thank the gods for your good fortune. This meal and experience was clearly one of the best meals I have had. There are very detailed reviews below so I will try not to repeat things that have been covered. Chef Takatomo Izumi placed us dead centre in front of him so we had a clear view of the preparation of the meal. His creativity is evident. The flavours, the combinations, the thought that went into the meal was outstanding. He focuses on what sorts of items are in season and fashions a menu based on those choices. For example, one dish had a particular fish from a specific coastal area of japan and then herbs and seasonings local to that area. Two local regulars were seated beside us and at one point they were examining the dishes that the meal was being served on only to find that Chef was using a particular famous pottery artisans work. The night was filled with these sorts of surprieses and delights. Chef was so gracious, humble, and made us feel really welcome. This meal I will remember for all time! I have attached a number of photographs. I would suggest making a reservation.

Yelp
I've had some pretty amazing dégustation 8-course meals in France and other places, but they always left me feeling fairly stuffed. Tasty, but super full. This kaiseki, fortunately, did not. Instead, it left me feeling satiated, satisfied, amazed and left my head spinning (in a good way). This 10-seat restaurant must be booked weeks, if not months in advance, but it is most likely, one of the most amazing dining experiences I have ever had. Chef Takamoto Izumi is a world-class master and you get to watch it all happen. He has three front-of-the-house apprentices who will take care of you and 1 chef in the back. You select (in advance) either ¥10,000, ¥12,000 or ¥15,000 (does not include 8% tax and 15% service charge or drinks). We selected the ¥12,000 option. The people next to us had the ¥15,000 option, but the only difference seemed to be they received 2 more courses, which were expensive uni and Wagyu beef. I thought we were supposed to have ~8 courses but they kept serving more and more delightful dishes and because my senses were on overload, I kinda lost track and think it might have been 10 in total. Chef Takamoto Izumi has two modes: laser-focused and undistractable when he is in his zone preparing a dish and a personable, friendly guy who will explain each dish to you in either Japanese or English. I agree with others who said that this Michelin 1-star needs to be a 2-star! OMG, it was a transcendent experience. 1000% go if are able.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing kaiseki experience. The restaurant is small and intimate- and the focus is on the food. You sit at a small table facing the chefs, and they prepare each course in front of you with such beauty and precision. I ordered the 7 course option- and I don't remember everything that was served- but my favorites were the yellowtail sashimi which was both beautifully prepared and delicious, and the sesame tofu, which I will never forget- it doesn't sound exciting but it's one of those things you have to taste to understand- and it is one of the most delicious dishes I have eaten during my time in Japan. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
Nothing more to add to other 5 star reviews, except for the fact that we changed our itinerary and plan while in Kyoto just to try this restaurant, and we were delighted to have done it. Excellent ingredients and preparation. Chef TAKATOMO IZUMI is absolutely charming and happy to explain every course. Value for price is exceptional at lunch and we'll definitely be back to try the dinner. Thank you Chef and all your crew.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. This is my first Kaiseki experience and I had a splendid time. The head chef spoke English. He was reserved but welcoming. Each dish was presented beautifully and subtle yet interesting flavors. Like most others stated, it was the simple tofu dish that stood out the most. Thumbs up!

Yelp
Refreshing food and experience from 1 Michelin star restaurant. Chef Izumi and staff name you feel very welcome even as foreigners but still provides the authentic Kaiseki experience. Went for lunch and prices were a steal for the quality and ability to see down at the kitchen "theatre". I'd opt to pay mid range as the price you pay makes up in the ingredients and touches made on the courses. I could see I definitely had better value than the couple who opted for 3500 rather than the 5000 lunch. The modern dishes were better than a lot of the two star dishes I've had. Thanks Chef!!

Yelp
I've eaten at many 1 and 2 Michelin Star restaurants over the past few years but few if any come close to the meal I enjoyed here. Every dish was interesting and unique, with twists that made it unlike anything I've had before. I'd say if you can get a reservation and can afford it, this is an absolute must on your visit to Kyoto... if I ever return to Kyoto this is the first reservation I'm trying to make. The chef is also very personable. Thank you for a great experience!

Yelp
We were able to make a reservation a few days in advance for dinner. We chose the 12000 Yen kaiseki and it was amazing. We arrived early and we were seated right in front of chef Izumi (I think it made it easier to explain the dishes since he was the only one who spoke English). It was amazing to be able to watch the chef prepare all the dishes - meticulous, skilled and artistic. It was truly an experience to remember. Our favorites were the sesame tofu dish, the aged tuna sashimi and fish soup.

Yelp
Amazing Kyoto experience. In fact one of my highlights of my trip to Japan. I literally cried with joy throughout the meal, everything was so delicious. I came in and ate alone and the staff were incredibly welcoming, the chef was wonderful and explained all the dishes passionately throughout. It was great to see all the dishes being prepared right in front of me with such precision. It was interesting to try lots of things I'd never really have picked myself from a menu and was blown away by how good it all tasted. Reservation recommended!

Yelp
We ate at this restaurant on my birthday and I can honestly say this visit was something truly special. The Chef was friendly and accommodating. The food was out of this world. The experience is one I will never forget and I can not recommend Jiki Miyazawa enough to anyone who is in Kyoto. Truly a magical experience!

Yelp
One of the 3 Michelin star restaurants we've been to during our Japan trip in December 2016. Chef was excellent in explaining the intricacies of the food preparation. I felt it was better than the 3 star Michelin restaurant we've been to in Kyoto. Totally worth getting a seat at the table if someone is in Kyoto. A significant number of Oh Wow moments as we savored the food.
